Do you know what the No.1 song in Australia was the day you were born? I have managed to calculate all of the No.1 singles in Australia from January 1940 thru to today, so that a consistent timeline has been constructed. The current No.1 of "Beautiful Girls" is the 925th, although Delta's recent chart-topper was the 926th. Most of this only came about in recent years thanks to David Kent releasing his chart book for the 1940-1969 period. So if you'd like to know what the No.1 was the day you were born, just put your entire birthday (date/month/year) down and I'll let you know. Regards, Gavin Ryan OzChartMaster
David Kent used the same formula's that he has used ever since her fine tuned the charts in the late 70's. Charts were compiled from all radio stations information from the late 50 thru until the end of the 1960's, plus were weighted for population via census information for each state, so that way percentage of the states population were relevant to what songs were charting in those states. So NSW would have the highest points, followed by Victoria, Queensland, SA, WA then Tasmania. I have done some similar calculations for 1964 and 1965, and they came out about the same, so it seems to be fairly correct for what David has done. Regards, Gavin Ryan
Oh I don't doubt the accuracy of his work, it's just that you can't really say "such and such a song" was No. 1 in 1965 when, back in 1965, it was not.
Liam, I do have charts going back to 1950 for Sydney, 1956 for Melbourne, and most other states from there onwards. If you don't like the national No.1, I can always break it down state-by-state if you want. Sometimes people like to know what there birthday song was in their home-town. So what's your home city/state and birthdate, and I'll possibly be able to give you alternatives. Regards, Gavin Ryan.
Jessica; Top 5 were 1 - Umbrella - Rihanna (debut) 2 - Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne 3 - Candyman - Christina Aguilera 4 - Glamorous - Fergie 5 - Never Again - Kelly Clarkson (debut) I hope that the child born on this date was a female, as this is one of the few times that you'll ever find the Top 5 full of females.
W!LL; You're No.1 song was "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston, it reached the top on December 20th, and stayed their for 10 weeks, so their's no escaping it.
I just discovered what the #1 song was on my birthday - it was "Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. That's good, cos I like that song And the #1 album was "Adrenalize" by Def Leppard... hm... don't know about that one.
Hey bulion, thanks heaps for that! I think i'm one of those rare breeds where an Australian No.1 in which one is born under is by an Aussie comedy act. I know Chris Franklin's 'Bloke' is also an Australian No.1. I wonder if there are any others?
The only other comedy act to hit No. 1 on the Australian singles charts was THE 12th MAN in 1984 with "It's Just Not Cricket" and in 1992 with "Marvellous!"
Other notable Aussie 'comedy' acts:
* KYLIE MOLE "So Excellent" / "I Go, I Go" (#8: 1988) * CON THE FRUITERER "A Cuppla Days" (#48: 1988) * NORMAN GUNSTON & EFFIE "Amigos Para Siempre" (#26: 1992) * ANDREW DENTON & THE CAST OF LIVE & SWEATY "I Don't Care As Long As We Beat New Zealand" (#38: 1992) * PAULINE PANTSDOWN "I Don't Like It" (#10: 1998) * JOHN SAFRAN (sort of) "Not The Suncreen Song" (#20: 1998) * LITTLE JOHNNY "I'm Sorry!" (1999) * ADAM HILLS "Working Class Anthem" (2003) ** plus anything by TISM !!!!
Hard to believe that since the charts began, that we now have 930 #1 songs here in Oz (The latest being Timbaland and OneRepublic's 'Apologise'). It just shows how us Aussie's love our diverse range of music that spans a few decades so far!
I'd be very curious to know as to which lucky song will be the 1000th #1 song in Australia! I do hope it's not an annoying novelty song!
I guess we should see 70 #1 songs later (Should be around late 2009 / early 2010 at this rate). It should be interesting.
On the subject of how long before No.1000. Here is the amount of No.1's per year since the start of the decade. 2000 - 20 No.1's 2001 - 16 2002 - 18 2003 - 18 2004 - 26 2005 - 22 2006 - 13 2007 - 14 So based on the slowing down of the charts and longer No.1 singles, and at an average of 15 to 16 No.1's per year, we should 1000 around 4 1/2 years. So if the charts still exist in 2012, we can cross our 1000th line. The UK managed theirs in the early part of this decade, and their charts have only been running since 1952 The current 930 are based on charts since 1940, so we are much slower at the turn-over of chart-toppers here in Oz.

It's rare that the new chart of the week actually falls on my birthday, and it's even rarer for an act that I truly love to have the No.1 single in Australia, but both have happened this year, so I thought I'd indulge myself for one, and put all of my birth-day songs here (so then you'll know how old I am too)... 1970 - Let it Be - The Beatles 1971 - Rose Garden - Lynn Anderson 1972 - Without You - Nilsson 1973 - Top of the World - The Carpenters 1974 - Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks 1975 - The Newcastle Song - Bob Hudson 1976 - Fernando - Abba 1977 - Don't Give Up on Us - David Soul 1978 - Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees 1979 - Heart of Glass - Blondie 1980 - I Got You - Split Enz 1981 - 9 to 5 (Morning Train) - Sheena Easton 1982 - What About Me - Moving Pictures 1983 - Billie Jean - Michael Jackson 1984 - 99 Luftballoons - Nena 1985 - We Are the World - USA for Africa 1986 - Chain Reaction - Diana Ross 1987 - Boom Boom (Let's Go Back to My Room) - Paul Lekakis 1988 - Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car - Billy Ocean 1989 - She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals 1990 - Opposites Attract - Paula Abdul 1991 - Joyride - Roxette 1992 - Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers 1993 - Are You Gonna Go My Way - Lenny Kravitz 1994 - The Sign - Ace of Base 1995 - Here's Johnny - Hocus Pocus 1996 - How Bizarre - OMC 1997 - Truly, Madly, Deeply - Savage Garden 1998 - Never Ever - All Saints 1999 - No Scrubs - TLC 2000 - Say My Name - Destiny's Child 2001 - Me, Myslef and I - Scandal'us 2002 - Hey Baby - DJ Otzi 2003 - In da Club - 50 Cent 2004 - F**k it (I Don'y Want You Back) - Eamon 2005 - Beautiful Soul - Jesse McCartney 2006 - SOS - Rihanna 2007 - Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne 2008 - 4 Minutes - Madonna feat Justin Timberlake

In Australia at a birthday celebration I heard people sing not just H.B. but also a ditty that went something like "Twenty-one again, twenty-one again" and then something about "...the key to the house...". They said it can be sung to anyone of any age. Do you have the lyrics, at least the first verse or so? Thanks MQ, CO, USA
MQ; I don't know the song you're trying to explain, but others might. You could also go to a lyrics website (of which there are plenty) and type in your lines that you know there, and see what turns up.
It's not often we get a USA resident on this site, so thanks for taking the time to seek us out.
There is also have a thread of all of the No.1 singles from 1940 to 1988 in the same Forum heading as this one. So you can see what other No.1's happened on your birthday in the following years.
Every Saturday I am now appearing on 3AW in Melbourne with Dennis Walter, between 5 and 6pm. We do a segment where people can ring up and find out there birthday song, and we'll play it, as I've managed to get every No.1 single from January 1940 through to today.
I am also letting people know about this website, so if they don't get their birthday song answered, they can come here.
You might remember "The Happy Wanderer" song as it's used in a yogurt commercial, the one with a mountain-goat in it, at the end they throw a stick over the ledge, and it jumps after it. Well that's the song they use for that commercial.
Could you please let me know the top of the Aussie charts on: 7 Feb 1959 8 Aug 1929 22 Apr 1960 15 Jan 1991 29 Oct 1989 Loved you segment on 3AW - amazed how many songs I know every word to even before I was born. The old trannie must have worked. Thanks again!
Because i'm in Sydney, i can't be able to hear your segment at 3AW down in Melbourne, perhaps if you guys have any podcasts so that I can have a listen to how great your show is?!? That would be awesome!

thanks bulion.this is real hard one. it's not jerry lee lewis,i have the song on old cassete, the singer talks troughtout the song start to finish, here some lyrics from the song[put the blossom close to baby kneel with me my love and pray we must leave the baby we burried say goodbye to her today it is sad to leave our baby and to think that we're not able at her head to place a stone we have been too poor to do it but my darling never mind god is in the gracious heaven he will bless this spot with beauty he will make the grasses grow many winds will love our baby many songs will come and go here the blue eyed spring will linger
Sam, Henry Kendall wrote a poem in the 1800s called Araluen.
The poem has the same lyrics as your song – maybe that will help find the name of the song:
Araluen
Take this rose, and very gently place it on the tender, deep Mosses where our little darling, Araluen, lies asleep. Put the blossom close to baby -- kneel with me, my love, and pray; We must leave the bird we've buried -- say good-bye to her to-day; In the shadow of our trouble we must go to other lands, And the flowers we have fostered will be left to other hands. Other eyes will watch them growing -- other feet will softly tread Where two hearts are nearly breaking, where so many tears are shed. Bitter is the world we live in: life and love are mixed with pain; We will never see these daisies -- never water them again. . . . . . Here the blue-eyed Spring will linger, here the shining month will stay, Like a friend, by Araluen, when we two are far away; But, beyond the wild, wide waters, we will tread another shore -- We will never watch this blossom, never see it any more.
Girl, whose hand at God's high altar in the dear, dead year I pressed, Lean your stricken head upon me -- this is still your lover's breast! She who sleeps was first and sweetest -- none we have to take her place! Empty is the little cradle -- absent is the little face. Other children may be given; but this rose beyond recall, But this garland of your girlhood, will be dearest of them all. None will ever, Araluen, nestle where you used to be, In my heart of hearts, you darling, when the world was new to me; We were young when you were with us, life and love were happy things To your father and your mother ere the angels gave you wings.
You that sit and sob beside me -- you, upon whose golden head Many rains of many sorrows have from day to day been shed; Who, because your love was noble, faced with me the lot austere Ever pressing with its hardship on the man of letters here -- Let me feel that you are near me, lay your hand within mine own; You are all I have to live for, now that we are left alone. Three there were, but one has vanished. Sins of mine have made you weep; But forgive your baby's father now that baby is asleep. Let us go, for night is falling, leave the darling with her flowers; Other hands will come and tend them -- other friends in other hours.
so far had no luck with [araluen track]been thru the normal channels, sounds like the title is araluen it gets mentioned a few times on cassete we will keep trying ,thank you so much bulion for your great help.

Sonya, the first and last No.1 Birthday songs listed above were only at the top for a single week, which is quite a coincidence.
Hi Gavin Thanks for the book on Adelaide charts, but did you miss the publication of the 5KA Top 50 charts 1963 - 1965 in a local magazine. They are not listed in your book, after the list of number 1s, 5KA 1959 -1960, and others are, etc. , but not the above. I live here in Adelaide.
My 3AW stint between 5 and 6 on Saturday afternoons will be finishing up next Saturday (March 20th, 2010) as the football will be taking over the 3AW airwaves until September.
So if you listen to the show and aren't able to get info about your birthdays song(s), then this is where you can write and ask for them.
bsb, you mum's birthday falls in the middle of the week of change, so you/she can choose from... 2-Oct-65 - Help! - The Beatles 9-Oct-65 - Que Sera Sera / Shakin' All Over - Normie Rowe.
The other requests I will do soon, but diesel06, you're gonna have to wait a few months before I can give you the Top 10 for July 2010, and you can always look up the 2000 and 1990 ones on this site.
you can find the 1990 and 2000 ones on the charts section of the site, top left hand corner where it says "Top 50 Singles", then just use the drop boxes to find the right date you want.
Thanks again for that, Bulion. I find it strange how in old Xmas charts, there are several Xmas-themed songs near the top, but these days, that doesn't happen anymore? Maybe people have run out of imagination for good Xmassy songs.
I only just saw your post now, I didn't know the US had been recording sales since 1890! I've always thought they started around the 30's there, and I'd think it'd be hard to compile past charts if sales weren't even recorded then! Would I be able to see the oldest top 10 you have please?
