For a fourth week Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" is No.1 in Australia and also New Zealand, and picks up the top-spot on the Canadian charts this week too. It's only charting in five countries at the moment, but is charting very well in each of them. It also helps cement the fact that 37 weeks of 2008 have had female acts occupying the Australian No.1 position, the most in out chart history (which goes back 68 years).
Last week's No.2 single, "Sex on Fire" drops to No.5 this week, helping the rest of the Top 4 to rise to new peaks, with "You" by Wes Carr up to No.2, "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon at No.3, and "Live Your Life" by T.I. feat Rihanna up to No.4 (now down to No.2 in the U.S.). One of the two biggest rising singles of the week jumps into the Top 10 at No.6, that being Beyonce's "Single Ladies" which overtakes her "If I Were a Boy" single, which was at No.6 last week, down to No.8 this week. Also reaching a new peak (thanks to a full week of physical sales), is Pink's "Sober", which is up two spots to No.7.
The other two big climbers of the week are "Burn" by Jessica Mauboy which climbs seven places to No.23 this week, and with new TV advertising starting this weekend, it'll most likely climb again next week, although her album is one of the two biggest falling albums of the week, it's down 11 places. Also climb is "Let it Rock" by Kevin Rudolf, up six spots to No.19, it's currently No.5 in Canada, and up to No.15 in New Zealand.
Britney Spears has had a busy 27th Birthday week, launching her new album "Circus", plus doing TV spot all around Europe and screening of her documentary/special on TV this past week. The title track of that album debuts at No.15 this week on downloads alone, and becomes her 20th Top 50 single since 1999, and her second chart single from the new album for the year, with "Womanizer" (No.9 this week) having peaked at No.5.
The only other Top 50 new entry this week is the No.44 debut for The Script, "The Man Who Can't Be Moved", and becomes their first Top 50 single, but their second Top 100, as "We Cry" made it No.96 in the first week of September. They were in the country several weeks ago, and their self-titled album has been out for several weeks also.
P!nk's "Funhouse" this week spends it's sixth week at the top of the Australian album charts, now equaling the six week run of Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" from earlier in the year, but the fact that every possible contender for the top of the charts can't knock her off, means to me that she could be staying up here for a lot longer.
The highest new entry (of 6 albums) is Britney Spears' sixth studio album, "Circus", which comes in at No.3 on Gold sales status. She has now placed seven (all) of her albums within the Top 10 in Australia, but still no No.1 yet. Her previous albums have performed thus... 16-May-99*HP-02*WI-53 - ... Baby One More Time 28-May-00*HP-02*WI-43 - Oops!... I Did it Again 18-Nov-01*HP-04*WI-32 - Britney 30-Nov-03*HP-10*WI-36 - In the Zone 28-Nov-04*HP-04*WI-16 - Greatest Hits: My Prerogative 11-Nov-07*HP-03*WI-24 - Blackout 08-Dec-08*HP-03*WI-01* - Circus
Comedians Hamish Blake and Andy Lee from Austeroe's 'Hamish and Andy' show (and also Rove) make their chart debut at No.5 with a highlights album from their radio show called "Unessential Listening".
The TV Series "Packed to the Rafters" finished on TV two weeks ago, but the soundtrack to the series featuring songs played during the shows run, has debuted at No.11, with the most significant tracks on the album being Gabrielle Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" and Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours".
The No.24 of Linkin Park's live album "Road to Revolution: Live at Milton Keyes" becomes their seventh charting album, and first since their No.1 album "Minutes to Midnight" from May 2007. At the moment it's also their lowest charting album, beating (?) the No.18 peak of their last live album from December 2003, "Live in Texas".

has been amended getluv, thanks for that. With doing the Nova Chartifacts, my own chartifacts and writing for the website all at the same time, I was bound to make a mistake somewhere.
nah, it's all good. do you know if Universal has any plans to release Lady Gaga's next single, The Fame, physically?
anyway good start to Britney's Circus campaign. she's never has been that big in Australia, considering she's never toured here. though there are positives signs coming out of the US. Favourable reviews, #1 album, sell out tour, Circus should be one of the biggest albums of 2008 worldwide.

Brandon asked me before about the physical chart for Britney's new album. It also came in at No.3 on physical sales chart.
To Getluv & Bulion, Circus is Britneys 5th top 50 single this year as Gimme More was still in the top 50 in January. Piece Of Me, Break The Ice, Womanizer & Circus make the other singles to make it 5!
Although I am not a big fan of Britney, I think she has charted fairly well in Oz compared to world wide. All her singles have pretty much charted in the top 20 here where they haven't cracked the top 50 in other places, especially America.
Also in regards to her albums, 7 top 10 albums is a great feat by any artist. I'm surprised she hasn't had atleast 1 #1 album but maybe most people realise the garbage that it is and refuse to buy it and only buy it for children or teeny boppers. Atleast decent albums seem to be getting #1. On that Pinks had her turn, move over and let someone else have the top spot.
Hey This count the Britney hits game is fun! Technically you could say that Britney had 6 song this year- as Gimme more was still charting, then piece of me and break the ice, then RADAR which got to 53 (or 55 or 50something), then Womanizer and Circus! Anyone got any others!!! Last edited:
Rhys calling Britney 'garbage' is totally subjective. she has hot dance music. if u like fun pop music, then seriously Britney has delievered non-stop. and Britney is the most illegally downloaded artist in the world. if she was garbage, she would be irrelevant by now. Don't you think?
just because no one talks about Xtina, doesn't mean u can pull the hate on Britney.
the fact it has not gone #1, is besides the point, because all of her albums have gone platinum or more and has done consistently well. rather than Madonna or Mariah Carey who have dropped off the chart after a month.
and like i said, she's never done any sort of promotional tour/tour at all in Australia.
while her singles haven't performed that well in the US is because of 2 reasons, Jive always withheld her singles from sale until well after its peak because they opted for album sales, which comparatively are much higher in the US especially early on in her career. and 2) because the US biggest radio network boycotted her when she dropped them in favour of Pepsi to be a tour sponsor. Billboard Singles chart was only measure by single by radio and singles sales back then.
C'mon Getluv. Toxic and Everytime were huge hits in America.
Both were top 10 hits and on the radio oodles when I was there in 2004 so her music was hardly boycotted. Perhaps her other singles were boycotted because they realised they weren't very good and most people weren't interested in them.
I applaud Britney for her efforts because she has achieved quite a good level of success but her singles have all pretty much charted like Madonna & Mariah Careys where they debut high and fall each week. Besides her 1999 singles and Womanizer it's fair to say the rest fall in this category and do so. You can't even compare Britney to either of Mariah or Madonna cos both these artists shit on her. Madonna especially has had numerous hit after hit every year and they are all massive and memorable hits.
As for illegal downloads, does that count downloads of her efforts last year, because they sure would of scored a number of downloads. Especially that time when she was getting out of the car and had no knickers on. I bet every bloke in the world downloaded that and illegally too.
As for Christina, this link def' sums her efforts up, http://music.msn.com/music/features/christina-aguilera/?GT1=28129 Britney may have had a bigger song than Christina but Christina atleast keeps belting out the tunes just like Britney does and atleast she takes risks and plays with her image like Madonna does. Britney never does that does she now?
oh Britney does what she does best makes hot dance/pop music. Oh Xtina is too busy copying Lady Gaga now.
actually Toxic and Everytime were huge hits for Brit in the US, because of the huge sales her singles brought in. it was too bad that digital downloads weren't counted at the time. she was boycotted for the reason i said above, not because they weren't that good. if that was the case, then why did they do well everywhere else.
btw the only reason Xtina has had more longetivity with her singles than Brit is because she's much lazier than Brit. 3 albums in 10 years, as opposed to 6 by Britney.
Xtina can dream for the album sales Britney gets. Even Blackout managed to sell 3 million worldwide without any promotion.
btw, just because u heard the song a lot on the radio, doesn't make it a huge hit. Britney is only limited to pop radio. Billboard measure all radio. and since when did Britney appeal to an urban audience.
Excuse me for calling Christina lazy you fool. Atleast she writes alot of her own music. Does Britney?
Christina has sold 42 million records world wide which is an incredible amount. If Britney is as good as u say she is she would be selling alot more than 3 million. Britney should be trying to outdo her previous efforts. She seems to get less and less sales with every album she releases.
Christina varies her music style like a good artist should. She is obviously clever to realise Lady Gaga is hot stuff atm so hats off 2 her.
Britneys music is the same all the time. Pop with the occasional ballad.
BTW, Please don't call Britney DANCE. That is an insult to all the real dance artists like The Presets or The Potbelleez. Sure her music is boppy but it is far from DANCE.
Britney doesn't need to write her own music, people write music for her. because she's the shit. and btw a writing credit means that you could have written 1 word for the song. so really does writing music really that important considering some of the biggest songs in history weren't written for that artist. and there has been much said about the way Beyonce basically re-writes one line on a song and gets a writing credit for it. so really i wouldn't put so much emphasis on that.
Britney has sold doubled of what poor Xtina has sold. and im sure britney was too busy in a mental institution to be out selling her last album. i thought that was common knowledge, obviously things are slow to connect with u.
and it is dance music. thats why it's in the dance music charts. there are different forms of dance music, maybe you should check up on what they are.
there is difference between copying an artist and using an artist for inspiration.
Britney doesn't need to change her style, what's working for now has always worked for her. Back 2 Basics was self gratification in every wrong way. no wonder Xtina is back to doing europop.
This trollop above is what I was talking about a few weeks back. OK getluv your a Britney backer & will defend her till death but your no better by slagging Xtina at the same time as Britney's being slagged. I'm gettin dizzy and bored of the constant jibberish about this. Bulion can you please move these posts to the relevant thread! And please people keep relevant to the topic on the thread! Otherwise posts will start disappearing!
Can anyone recall how digital sales hold up for this time of year?
I know with the busy Christmas period, digital sales would be down compared to physical singles but then again people would be downloading songs if they're going away or perhaps the week after Christmas would have an increase in digital sales for those who score an Itunes gift card.
I am curious as to know if digital singles only suffer at this time of year?
I guess that Digital singles are not suffering, but booming, during this time of the year, because of the Xmas sales rush.
I think that both physical and digital singles sales are very high, during this time of year, and that's great. Physical singles are slowly fading away, BigW doesn't stock cd singles anymore, only Kmart an JbHifi do.
January is usually the month in which the distribution of physical and digital singles is limited, because record labels close offices and go on holidays until Mid-January.
End of January, and beginning of February is when new singles get released because of the Back to School sales rush.
Oh, man... that sucks regarding Wes Carr. I finally got around to hearing the song yesterday and it is easily the best song by any Australian Idol released at any time in their career, IMO. This is how I would rate the Top 5 Aussie Idol songs: 1. You 2. Night Of My Life 3. Running Back 4. These Days (I think that's what it's called... Joel Turner) 5. Wasabi (no, that's a joke).
As for this Brit vs. Xtina B.S... well, thats exactly what it is, lol. If you want to know which female pop star is better than both... check out who is releasing her new single this week.
SHadows - Getaway Plan The Fame - Lady GaGa Trouble Trouble - Potbelleez Yippiyo-Ay - The Presets Shutup and Let Me Go - Ting Tings (thought physical relkease would help get into top 50) One of the boys - Katy Perry
And do you know if any Britney songs/;albums have re-entered.
On the ARIA chart website in the Australian Aritsts bit Running Back - Jess Mauboy was forgotten to be placed in there. What idiot forgot to put it on the chart?.
Wes Carr only missed the #1 spot by 11 units, that is close. If only those 11 people who brought Lady Gaga did not buy her stupid single we would finally have an Australian Artist at the top of the Australian Charts. The last Australian Artist that was #1 was Gabrieilla Cilmi. But that was so long ago.
Shadows - Getaway Plan - leaves the physical sales chart from 77 The Fame - Lady GaGa - 85 from 75 Trouble Trouble - Potbelleez - 61 from 54 Yippiyo-Ay - The Presets - 95 from 94 Shutup and Let Me Go - Ting Tings - 56 from 69 One of the boys - Katy Perry - 54 from 61

my prediction this week... 1. Poker Face - Lady GaGa 2. You - Wes Carr 3. Use Somebody - Kings of Leon 4. Live Your Life (feat. Rihanna) - T.I. 5. Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) - Beyoncé 6. Sober - P!nk 7. Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon 8. Circus - Britney Spears 9. If I Were a Boy - Beyoncé 10. Womanizer - Britney Spears 11. Running Back (feat. Flo Rida) - Jessica Mauboy 12. I think Wes Carr has missed his chance at the #1 spot! Kings Of Leon or T.I. & Rihanna look like they might be next. Perhaps Beyonce could be aswell but based on digitals only I am not so sure she can pull it off!
I do like Poker Face but I am ready for a new #1. I think it's done well to earn 4 weeks, but I think it's time to let someone else have a turn.
I'd hate Wes Carr to get #1. My thinkingg is that with Britney's strong digital sales this week, she could nab it in the forthcoming weeks. But i honestly think "Poker Face" will fall, with a nice Platinum certification, and "Beyonce" will rule the chart for at least a week before Britney storms to the top
Yeah, i agree Britney needs a No.1, the last time she acheived No.1 hits in Australia, was back in 2004, when "Toxic" and "Everytime" both debuted at No.1, in the same year.
"Circus" should rise to No.1, and eventually overtake "Poker Face", i hope. I guess that the "Circus" physical single might be released mid-January 2009.
"Poker Face" could equal or break Katy Perry's record "I Kissed a Girl" which spent 6 weeks!! at No.1 If "Poker Face" is knocked off this Sunday then, "I Kissed a Girl" will become the longest-running No.1 single of 2008!!!
I will never forget how "Big Girls Don't Cry",spent 9 consecutive weeks at No.1 last year!!, and 10 weeks at No.1 on the Digital track chart.
Miss Perry and Gaga have earned their first ever Grammy honours with only 1 nomination each:
"Just Dance" - Best Dance Recording category
"I Kissed a Girl" - Best Female Pop Vocal Performance

=========================================
Only 1 Re-Entry to the Top 40 this week
Dance Wiv' Me - Dizzee Rascal is the drop-out
Only 1 Re-Entry to the Top 50 this week (different to Top 40 re-entry though).
I predict Circus to be the biggest climbing single followed by Get Shaky as the 2nd biggest single. It's too bad that they both Suck!!!!!. I WILL be back after the show finishes as usual.
40 down 11 from 29 - Another Way to Die - Jack White & Alicia Keys
* With the film waning in popularity (lack of story also doesn't help), the title to the 22nd James Bond film is the biggest dropping song of the week, down 11 places.
* With the film "Twilight" opening around the country, interest in the the soundtracks lead-single heightens, and becomes the only song to enter the charts this week, back in for a third week, it's Paramore's "Decode".
Only one re-entry this week? The songs moving up on the i-tunes chart are mainly digital only tracks. I'm guessing the re-entry to the Top 50 is a digital and physical single like Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent" Six is the highest number of predictions correct as well? Songs have been jumping up and down on i-tunes, plus there are a few tracks with multiple entries making it harder to predict.
* Not only does he have the biggest climbing single of the week, but also the highest new entry on the album charts, as his new set "Freedom" debuts at No.40 this week.
I am not a big fan of Kanye West and his newer material. It's obvious that he has little vocal ability so he should stick to his rapping... Also he wants them to create a new genre for him and other artists called "POP ART" Also trying to make a fashion statemens! He is quite arrogant which has been as plain as the nose on his face when he announced Gold Digger was the best song of 2005. Also has been recieieving quite bad reviews across the globe for his music... It has affected his sales... he is in Australia for a promotional blitz which did not see his album or his singles sell more...
Nice rant, Nate. But I am on the complete opposite side of the fence. Kanye has a right to be arrogant, not only because he revolutionised hip hop, but because he is also one of the great pop songs writers out there at the moment. It is a shame that Australia, as a generality, hates arrogance, because 808's is one of the albums of the year.
* Akon scored the biggest climbing single of the week as "Right Now (Na Na Na)" rose 11 places, but the Ian Carey Project also do some chart-damage but jumping up 10 places to No.11 this week.
20. I'm Yours - Qwerty only 19. Just Dance - no one 18. Burn - no one 17. I Hate This Part - BlueZombie, Nate, Brandon and Stampy 16. Let it Rock - Rhys only 15. Alive - Henry only 14. Hot N' Cold - no one 13. Running Back - no one 12. So What - no one 11. Get Shaky - Clinton, Qwerty and Grogsta 10. If I Were a Boy - Clinton, Qwerty and Sally.
* Four singles make big strides this week, and here is the fourth of those, as "Circus" by Britney Spears becomes the second Top 10 single off the same-named album, which is at No.5 this week.
* This single has been in the Top 10 for the past 13 weeks, plus the No.2 album of the week, "Only By the Night" is spending it's 13th week inside the Top 5!!
3 up 1 from 4 - Live Your Life - T.I. feat Rihanna
* Climbing one place for the past three weeks, now within striking range of the No.1 spot, somewhere Rihanna has been before, but T.I. has only ever been as high as No.3, featuring on the Justin Timberlake single "My Love" from November 2006.
this wee has ruined a fantastic year... i am utterly devastated by this... it is clear as well the sinlge is going to drop like an anvil in the weeks to come and yet another week at the top that is by a rubbish act...
The song should be #1... a great upbeat blues-rock stomper which could become a club smash in the right remixer's hands... It is one of the best tracks in the Top 50 right now.
NEW No.1 SINGLE, first Oz Idol No.1 since Damien Leith in Dec 06.
1 - You - Wes Carr
* Last year Natalie Gauci's "Here I Am" peaked at No.2, becoming the first non-No.1 by an Australian Idol winner, but this year Wes Carr does eventually climb to the top of the Australian charts.
* Last week there was 11 units between No.1 and No.2, but this week Wes Car becomes the 14th Australian Idol performer with a National No.1 single, plus he's only the third solo male act of the year to reach the top (Flo Rida and Kid Rock were the other two), and he is also the only Australian Male Solo act to hit the top this year.
Clinton... I am an avid music lover i have had to watch idol pollute the chart since late 2003... It's not that i have a problem with the show itself it's the fact that every single winners single is rubbish and we all just on't remember it in years to come... Wes Carr will be out of the charts with 10 weeks it just a waste... look at all the songs that have got to #1 this year they have averaged 20+ weeks in the charts. and are all memorable.
Nate, I understand where you are coming from. But I really enjoy this song, I had a post earlier in this thread regarding my views on Idol (only 4 good songs from Idol contestants ever, being my main point)... I just think this is a great song regardless of where it came from and regardless of its chart performance... which, I think may be the only winner's song to climb up the chart, correct me if I'm wrong.
Yeah but i swear this is chart rigging... not one song has been #1 this year on physical it's just not possible.... especially the song is #8 on itunes... it's insane... #2 peak was fine but then it went and destroyed a great run... #1 is special to me. and this is the most undeserving #1 this year
I met Wes yesterday and he's a really down to earth guy. Good on him for getting #1, seriously some of you get way too worked up about chart positions. Poker Face had it's run, let an Aussie have #1 for once.
come on... we have great music but we don't support thay enough all the crap pop acts get throu due to stupid radio.. that's why we don't go good on overseas charts... it's so depressing. and i don't care if he isnice or mean or totally crazy there are seveal songs within this wees countdown that deserve #1 over YOU.
i'm all for Aussies have #1, and its not the worst song on the chart, but it's not #1 material. i hope Sony is running out of physical singles for this song cuz the guy can't seem to sell a download.
and awesome having 6 artists with 2 tracks in the top 20.
I'am actually glad that Wes Carr is #1 because Poker Face is much worse then Wes. I agree with Knowlesey, Let an Australian Act have #1 for a change. Poker Face had it's 4 weeks at the top.
Nate, almost every week, in my opinion, there are songs that should be #1 when they aren't. This is week another week. Yeah, I like the song but there is always better music below the Top 10.
So, essentially, I agree with you, but the fact is that it is #1, and saying this chart is rigged and shit like that is just plain stupid.
Ok, i will leave it at that... I have had my rant. He is now part of the #1 select group. I will watch the songs chart progress and i will just smile... Brandon you are right, Lady GaGa can't egual her now! Also go really hard working Aussie acts who tour and write and make excellent tracks, Presets etc...
I hear that, Nate. The Presets, Something With Numbers, Jackson Jackson, Dukes of Windsor, Kate Miller-Heidke, Gyroscope, and Trial Kennedy are just some of the Aussie artists that could have been Top 10 if the support was there.
I agree Clinton. Gyroscope - Australia was a track that should have cracked the Top 10 instead of it's #52 peak. It's one that most Australians should support.
I basically agree with everything NateBoi said, at least in principle regarding idol & the charts. But I can't agree one bit with the idea that this is such a dreadful #1. I certainly can't understand how getluv finds it to be the "saddest week on this chart" (CrazyFrog, Akon, BEP's My Humps, Hinder were better?), as this is possibly the most deserving #1 Australian Idol Winners' single so far. Both this & Damien Leith's "Night of My Life" (2006) are the only AI winners singles that even actually sound like REAL MUSIC. Is it the best song on the chart? No. But it's probably closer to the best than the worst.
With any music remotely attached to something like Idol, I think some have an 'autopilot' reaction (for want of a better term), i.e., "it's idol-related, so it must be shit regardless". I encourage people to take this song purely for what it is - I'm sure you'll actually like it. Clinton summed up 100% what I think of "You" (and that the right dj could do something very good with it) - a great change from the post-idol norm. Even his association with the band Tambalane is evident here as well - it has an upbeat feel like "Little Miss Liar" (check it out on youtube).
Even though LML is still a better track IMO, "You" I'd say is enough proof to suggest that idol didn't sap all of the personality out of Wes Carr's sound. He's EXACTLY what Idol has needed for so long.
