DISCUSSION FORUM

Each week I (or anybody who wants to) will put a 10 question quiz on the site.

Please email your answers directly to me, that way no one can copy your answers, and I will reveal the answers and winner(s) on Friday after 6pm.

So get your answers to me before Friday 6pm via email on

bulion@optusnet.com.au.

Regards, Gavin Ryan (bulion).
It's best to copy these questions into an email, then write your answers on that page. Also try to answer all the questions off the top of your head, rather than looking them up.

Week Ending - Friday Feb 20th

1 - Which single has charted longer in Australia: "SexyBack" or "Straight Lines"?

2 - Was Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction a former member of Faith No More, Metallica or Red Hot Chili Peppers?

3 - Soap star Ronn Moss was formerly in which 70's pop group?

4 - Which local group added one extra digit to their name to be almost the same name as the answer to question 3?

5 - Where do the group The Irish Rovers come from? (hint, it's not like their name suggests!!)

6 - Which film does the song "1 Thing" by Amerie come from?

7 - Which is Pete Murray's bigger hit, "So Beautiful" or "Better Days"?

8 - What year did "Dr. Beat" by Miami Sound Machine chart in (predominently).

9 - Who were the four artists who teamed up for the first single from the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack?

10 - Monie Love had a single called "Born to B.R.E.E.D.". What did the letters in Breed stand for? And for a bonus point, who produced the track?

If you wanna get your answers for this through to me by the end of Friday, I can post the winner(s) on Saturday. So far I have received only three entries, so get em in.
The answers were:

1 - SexyBack (with 72 weeks(
2 - Red Hot Chili Peppers
3 - Player
4 - Player1
5 - Canada
6 - Hitch with Will Smith
7 - So Beautiful
8 - 1985
9 - Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya and Lil' Kim
10 - Build Relationships, Education and Elightenment Dominate, produced by Prince.

No one from this forum responded to this, by John from EMI got 8 out of 10 right, so he is the winner this week.

Maybe next week you might respond, or were the questions too hard for you? Let me know, as I'll dumb them down a bit.
i would've done the quiz except you didn't promise any prizes, so i didn't bother.

Good work. Much better.
Yay. 5/8.
This time, I'm going to try something a little different. I will put up five different statements about music since the 1960s. Three of the statements are TRUE, while the other two are FALSE. The objective is to correclty guess which statements are facts and which statements are pure fiction.

A:
In 1978, a popular female group of the 1960s called The Surpremes organised a disco concert called "Female Beat Down" in Detroit Michigan. The idea was to promote female music amongst mainstream audiences. The Orlons performed their biggest hit "Don't Hang Up" and the night was a massive triumph. Over 20,000 tickets were sold.

B:
In 1966 a band named The 13th Floor Elevators released a song called "You're Gonna Miss Me", it was a hit in the Billboard Charts reaching #55. The band's 1966 studio album was originally released under the International Artists record label and the album is notable for the frequent use of an electric jug in the recordings.

C:
In the mid-1980s an American band named Miami Sound Machine had a top ten hit in the UK with the song "Dr Beat". In 2005, a Scottish musician known by the name Mylo released "Doctor Pressure" which mashed up the hit by Miami Sound Machine with a song of his own "Drop The Pressure". It became a #1 dance hit all over Europe and reached a higher peak than the original "Dr. Beat" in the UK Singles Chart.

D:
"Bohemian Rhapsody" today is considered one of the greatest songs of all time. But it didn't always get praise by critics. In 1974, when Freddie Mercury was writing the song, a then-friend of Freddie Mercury and professional music critic, Ryan Winter told him "These lyrics are insane. You'll never make a pound out of that". When the song achieved mainstream popularity in 1976, Ryan Winter never spoke to Freddie Mercury ever again.

E:
Regarding AC/DC's name, Malcolm and Angus Young developed the idea for the band's name after seeing AC/DC on the back of a sewing machine owned by their older sister. Depsite usually being pronounced one letter at a time, many Australians later began to refer to them as "Acca Dacca".

Which three are TRUE?
Which two are FALSE?
A. FALSE
B. FALSE
C. TRUE
D. TRUE
E. TRUE

Most were guesses though.
It's a close one Lifter

Bluezombie 15/20
Ben1 16/20
Lifter 1/20

Roydges was the big winner with 19/20
OK, I'll pop out another one. No theme, just lyrics:

1.
Velvet ropes and guitars, yeah cause you're my rockstar
In between the sets, eyeliner and cigarettes

2.
When I repeat confessions, with catastrophe in mind,
And fuck it's sublime

3.
They made up their minds, and they started packing,
They left before the sun came up that day

4.
For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made up think that we were wise and we'd never compromise

5.
I call you up whenever things go wrong
You're always there you are my shoulder to cry on

6.
I know that you got a new honey, I know that you have no more time
For me to spend all your money, I know and I've made up my mind

7.
Some of us hover are we waiting for the other who was dying since the day they were born

8.
I wait for the postman to bring me a letter
And I wait for the good lord to make me feel better

9.
You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy

10.
You win, I lose, You leave with nothing to prove
You rise, I fall, I leave with nothing

11.
When he knocked on my door, and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace

12.
You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it, I thank you all

13.
I don't wanna know the lover at my door
It's just another heartache on my list

14.
He knows she's moving it, knows she's using it
Now he's losing it, she don't care

15.
He's underneath the window, she's singing 'Hey la, my boyfriend's back'
You shouldn't come around here, singing up at people like that

16.
If the light is off then it isn't on
At least not today, not today

17.
It feels like rain has run down my face
As she closed her eyes for the last time, why can't we travel back in time

18.
Why was it you, I don't understand
And nothing shows me why

19.
So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow

20.
Don't wanna think about it, don't wanna talk about it,
I'm just so sick about it, can't believe it's ending this way
1) LADY GAGA - Paparazzi
2) SHORT STACK - Shimmy A Go-Go

20) JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - What Goes Around...Comes Around
19/20 for Beanster. I'll roll over the missed one to the next quiz since it fits that theme, and give more lyrics. This time it's all Australian artists, and all of these singles reached the ARIA top 50.

1.
Why was it you, I don't understand
And nothing shows me why
Maybe someday, I'll see you again
And tell you how much I've missed you

2.
I don't know which way to point my kiss
Well it's a lot too clever it's all too severe

3.
I know it's been a long long time
That I haven't made you smile

4.
For always I'll see you there
For always I'll hold your hand

5.
But I really don't want to
All the trouble I've gone to

6.
I feel it, it's coming
It's here if you want it

7.
I didn't wanna stop believing
I wanna be your lover not your keeper

8.
Echoes in the heart when we meet
I chose to take this moment to tell you I'm leaving

9.
I write down my number
And I draw a little star

10.
I see the shame in you
But I'm still waiting here for you

11.
I get stuck in the middle
Of my own private Groundhog Day

12.
All that's left behind are the memories
Of all the nights you made her cry

13.
Wish I could forget your name, your face
Your smile, your sweet embrace

14.
Dreaming of a blue horizon
Meet me where the sun is shining

15.
Though there were others
You never left me at all

16.
Everytime I'm lying in your arms
I try to ignore you but I can't

17.
Care enough to want to prove
That the pretty ones have got less to lose

18.
I found the letter you left lying there
I threw it away

19.
Even if you don't feel the way I do
Even if you can't feel the way I could

20.
Now you say you can't decide
Which way to run or where to hide
OK I will try and do this quiz.

1. Miley Cyrus - See You Again (Probally wrong because it's Australian arists)
18. Hoostabank Feat Vanessa Amorosi - The Letter
20. Linkin Park - New Divide. (Probally wrong because it's Australian arists)

Thats I could do and I was only guessing.

Livin' the high life, she's a real fine honey

Where you at,slow it down baby,
We should go crazy,
Tempt you, tease you, anything you want to do,
I'll give it to you just how you like it boy

9 - I've always had to hear
That I'm not good enough for you to be near.

Fifteen left from my last quiz that nobody got. I'll post again, and add more lyrics to each one. Remember, they're all Australian artists and all of these songs peaked in the ARIA top 50.

1.
Why was it you, I don't understand
And nothing shows me why
Maybe someday, I'll see you again
And tell you how much I've missed you
Things happen and no-one knows why
If I'd erase this moment in time

2.
I know it's been a long long time
That I haven't made you smile
But I'm still here to please you
Do you feel the same

3.
For always I'll see you there
For always I'll hold your hand
For always be your man
Be your man, be your man

4.

All the trouble I've gone to

And it's driving me crazy

5.
I didn't wanna stop believing
I wanna be your lover not your keeper
But I, I really loved you so
But you can't step, see it fades to black

6.
Echoes in the heart when we meet
I chose to take this moment to tell you I'm leaving
Oh, I believe in something more
I watched her heart through bathroom doors

7.
I write down my number
And I draw a little star
So let's run away tonight
Into the rain outside

8.
I see the shame in you
But I'm still waiting here for you
No reason I'm breathing
I'm living for your sake

9.
All that's left behind are the memories
Of all the nights you made her cry
Well, so many times you should have
Apologised but tell me

10.
Though there were others
You never left me at all
Love paved our way
With initialled sidewalk streets

11.
Everytime I'm lying in your arms
I try to ignore you but I can't
I'm not alone but I am lonely
I'm insatiable and I can't get enough

12.
From magazines for teens
That relly care
Care enough to want to prove
That the pretty ones have got less to lose

13.
I found the letter you left lying there
I threw it away
What do you take me for
Some kind of stupid fool

14.
Even if you don't feel the way I do
Even if you can't feel the way I could
Even just for tonight
Tell me this lie

I haven't done one of these in ages, so I'll do a movie tie-in one, which will get harder as the questions go along.

5 - What film did "Ghetto Supastar (That is What You Are)" by Pras Michel feat Ol' Dirty Bastard and Mya, feature in?

9 out of 10 points for you bluezombie. One of the 3 songs is not right.
I was bored and wanted to try something different. Without cheating, how many songs can you remember from the top 50 of the Best of All Time page given year and artist. Give it a shot here http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/austopalltimeharder
It might be really easy but I'm curious as to what people think.
did it in 4 four minutes and thirteen seconds - a little longer than Madonna' last #1...heh heh.
I completed it in 3:48. I found it very easy, as I often look at the best of all time list, however even if I hadn't I would have found it very easy. Having the artist as well as the year made it very easy.
I thought it might be too easy. Maybe I'll try a different one, without listing the artist.
Ok, this should be a bit harder, the top 100 singles of 2008, without any hints.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/2008singles_aus
I Got 38/50 so it was not that easy although you lot are smarter then I.

As for the other Quiz I got a pitiful 42/100. BTW I did not cheat which is why my scores were ordinary.

I got 63/100 but that's considering the fact that I wrote the quiz and got a lot of harder ones because of that.
Second attempt: 73/100
Third attempt: 78/100

76/100 for me
Lol, I got 77, but somehow I missed Metro Station - Shake It! That was a much tougher challenge, after the first 2 minutes, I only had about 5 songs, my mind was blank, but gradually one song reminded me of the next and so on. Not having the artist made it tougher, with artists, we'd probably all be getting 100. It took me about eight minutes to remember Katy Perry, and I just couldn't place who was #6 for SO long.

Great work hijinx, lots of fun!
On my first go it took me until the last minute to remember Lady Gaga & Rihanna, which filled in quite a few spots.
In Best of All Time - how I forgot Black Fingernails Red Wine, Truly Madly Deeply and Last Kiss I really don't know...
My score was 38/50, I gave up after 4 minutes something... I did not cheat! If I had I would've done better lol

Got 70/100 in 2008 Top 100, and gave up with 4:19 remaining.. Would have done better with artists, of course.

My conclusion is I need to follow the Aria Charts more.

My mind went blank on several ocassions, I got the entire
Top 12, most of the Top 20 but missed heaps below the late 30's.

Missing #13 made me realise how forgetable The Pussycat Dolls really are.

I feel ashamed to say that me (with help from my bro Liam) got a miserable 26.
Here's something closer to now. The 2009 List

This should be easier
First Attempt: 72/100
Second Attempt: 80/100
Third Attempt: 93/100
Fourth Attempt: 98/100
Seventh Attempt: 99/100
Fifteenth Attempt: 100/100

I did the 08 again, and I got 59.
I Did the 09 and got 50/100, 8 better then last time.
I thought I had all of Gagas Singles but I forgot about Lovegame.
It's these type of quizzes that are a good way to tell how forgettable some Music is.

I got 47/100 in the 2009 one. Surprisingly I managed to forget Right Round!
I made a United World Chart Top 40 of 2000 game like Hijinx has done.
- It has an artist column, but
- You have to enter the song titles in order.

Here's the link, Enjoy!

I just took the quiz twice. The first time it was so frustrating, because I could see lower songs that I knew, but I was stuck on Britney at #21 (won't say for others what it is.) I took it again after that, having realised that you could skip ahead, which would have made my score a bit better the first time.
Did better than me there, I only got 16/40. I have to commend you on this 392414, most first time quiz makers make loads of mistakes and don't consider multiple answers enough but you've managed to do it right so well done to you. One small thing, you can put a link to your source, it's on the right column in the main editing page.

I got 26/40. I didn't read the title properly, I thought it was the top selling singles of the 2000's.
Just 17/40 for me. This is a fun web site actually.
Best of all time Singles since 1989:

Try this quiz without looking at the "Best of all time" list.

1. At #43 it is the highest of any 80s song on the list. Name the song and artist.

2. Name the artist of the highest song from the year 1992 on the list.

3. Until 2009, which song was the #1 song since 1989 on the best of all time list?

4. What is the only song of the top 10 to have not peaked in the top 3?

5. After Poker Face, what is Lady Gaga's highest ranked song on the list?
Without looking
1. Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistable
2. Guns N' Roses
3. The Prodigy - Breathe (Actually I think they held it at the end of 2009)
4. Guns N' Roses - November Rain
5. Just Dance
OK, I've added a game as well. Test your memories on the biggest of the charting hits during April 1987 as per the ARIA/AMR charts.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/DaveNT/ozchartsongsApr87
That was near on impossible for me, as I turned 2 in that month! I got 7/50, but probably guessed around 100 titles (just randomly guessing anything from the artists I recognised.)
I got 2/50, I'm hopeless
lol, sorry guys. I was 13 then and really knowing my charts at that time, much better than I know charts today. I'm sure if I did a quiz of charts when I was 2 (1975) I'd struggle to get even 5/50.
Guess it is a tough quiz although some people around my age may go well.
I got 54/100 on the 2009 one, but im not gonna bother with Apr 1987, I wasn't even born then!
I got 0/50, lol!
Here's a lyrics quiz. All the songs used have made the World Year End Top 40 in any year of the noughties.

I wanted to try something different. Can you name each artist's highest charting hits (1988-2010 only). I used a mix of artists and suggestions are open for a sequel.

I got 42/50. Easily completed Taylor, GaGa and Coldplay, but struggled with Rihanna and Shania before I finally completed them. Missed 2 Blur, 2 MJ, 2 Bon Jovi, a Guetta and an Offspring.

Great work on that quiz.
Sprocle is my new addiction! It's AWESOME!
Good to know I'm not the only one who's addicted
35/50. Had a mind blank on some obvious ones. How'd I forget Umbrella, Thriller & Scream!!
27/50, I forgot about One Love and had no idea that
Living On A Prayer was not Bon Jovi's Best Charting Single.
I only used 1988-2010 for the quiz so Livin on a Prayer was just under two years too old. According to the 1987 thread, it peaked at #3.
If anyone's still interested, Here's a super-sized sequel. There are two instances of songs with the same name, consider them bonuses. (1988-2010)

It came to my attention that over the last few weeks, we managed to fill in all the letters of the alphabet since the start of 2009 on the album chart. Naturally, I made a quiz about it. Can you name the A-Z highest charting artists on the album chart since Jan 2009? http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/artistbyletteralbums
Important to note that artists who go by their proper name are listed by their surname (ie Stan Walker goes under W). If it's too hard here are some hints
1. 3 letters can be found in the current top ten album chart
2. 1.25 letters can be found in the current top ten singles chart
3. 4 letters can be found from artists who hit number one on the singles chart since the start of last year
Enjoy!
/\/\ Today's quiz \/\/
Which album produced 9 x Top 50 singles in ARIA? This album is not a compilation or best of.
And which album a few years later made 8 x Top 50 singles?
Clue : both last century
Answer tomorrow.
Do I memo my guess to you, Dave?
memo or here ...
Well I would have to guess Michael Jackson, and for the albums, either Thriller or Bad for the 9 singles (they are around 5 years apart)? If its Bad, then Dangerous would be for the 8 singles prob, as Black Or White came out around 3 years after the Bad single I think.
Last edited:
Thriller will be my guess. But it could be "Bad".
I believe the answer is Michael Jackson's Bad followed by Michael Jackson's Dangerous. But for this to be an accurate response, based upon the wording of the question Dangerous needs an asterix next to it.

If the question is in to the initial release of the song than the asterix would be applied to the Clivilles & Cole Remix of Black Or White since this charted as a seperate single, was a remix of a song on Dangerous but never appeared on Dangerous. If the question is using Will You Be There as the 8th single, then it needs to be mentioned that it only reached the Top 50 last year after MJ's death as on it's intial release it only manged to hit #58 on the charts.
Last edited:
I think that you will find that you will find yes Dangerous had the 8 singles AS WELL as the remix of Black and white. But I was think about his sisters CD called Janet. I am sure that weith the release of What'll I do when she toured that it reached the top 50 to make her 8th in Australia. It was a pity that throb was not released ehre, great club hit it would have been
Ah yes, how could I forget about the album janet.

That's The Way Love Goes
If
Again
Because Of You
Any Time, Any Place
What'll I Do
You Want This
Whoops Now

That's 8. Good work trent. So i'll go with you and I'll say the answer is Bad followed by janet.
It's either janet. or Dangerous for the second question.

Singles from Dangerous:
Black or White: #1
Black or White (C&C Remixes): #18
Remember the Time: #6
In the Closet: #5
Jam: #11
Who Is It: #34
Heal the World: #20
Give In to Me: #4
Last edited:
Black or White (C&C Remix) did appear on the 2CD tour version as I have it
I wasn't sure if there was only one answer to my quiz. I was thinking about BAD (Michael Jackson) for the 9 x Top 50 hits and DANGEROUS (MJ) for the 8 x Top 50 hits. But yes, as BillyBrett says, 'Will You Be There' did not actually make the Top 50 until 2009. JANET (Janet Jackson) did get 8 x Top 50 hits, I forgot about that one.
The nine hits from BAD:
I Just Can't Stop Loving You (#10, '87)Another Part Of Me (#44, Sep-88)
Bad (#4, '87)Smooth Criminal (#29 Jan-89, then #16 '09)
The Way You Make Me Feel (#5, '87/88)Leave Me Alone (#37 May-89)
Man In The Mirror (#39 '88, then #8 '09)Liberian Girl (#50 Sep-89)
Dirty Diana (#27 Jun-88)

MITM and SC only made #39 and #29!
It's crazy isn't it with those two songs. Especially the iconic Man In The Mirror. I was so surprised to learn it was not a huge hit first time around even though it hit #1 in the US.

It was a good question DaveNT especially since it highlighted how successful the Jackson siblings have been. Thanks for posting it.
Yeah, most of the singles from Bad flopped for some reason. I'm glad MITM and SC got new peaks in 2009
Yeah those flopping greatly surprised me, I've always thought of them as massive hits. Another greatly surprising fact (for me at least) is that Smooth Criminal by MJ made #29 and the Alien Ant Farm cover had 8 weeks at #1. And I don't think it was used it a movie. WOW (But I do prefer AAF still)
The other day I heard a song from the 80's that I had never heard before, something of a rarity for me. But, it did get me thinking about samples.

So here is a samples quiz, leading off with the song I heard for the first time.

1 - What song ten years later did this sample become a hit with a Total Recall sample included.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQGxUGYpAMs

2 - What chant later became a dance twenty years later for a silva touch
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkcqw5YOXfc

3 - In 1978 these exile(s) wanted to do what!!!but 27 years on they were in a live element
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJJQpSzDgC0

4 - a-corn-tree nut wasn't the first mr lonely, who was sped up to ludacris standards 40 years later.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbT5W4O0tZY

5 - Right after a blue monday, this became a vamps techno by which doctors tool 28 years later
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLwrdp8RV5A
are these questions too hard, as no one has attempted them yet.
#3. Live Element - Something About You
#4. Akon - Lonely
#5. Public Domain - Operation Blade (Bass In The Place)

No idea on the first two. (Well I might have an idea on the artist for the second one, based on the cryptic clue, but I'd need to look it up to confirm the title, and I prefer not to do that on these quizzes.)
1 Great Southern Land-Lifehouse
2 Touch Me-Rui De Silva (Based on the clue)
3 Something About You-Live Element
4 Mr. Lonely (the actual title)-Akon
5 Operation Blade (Bass In The Place)-Public Domain (love this song xD)
mykl, 2 to five are correct (as too are BZ's), but wrong on the first one. Wanna try again for that one.
Icehouse instead of Lifehouse :S
Didn't realise I did that, or something completely different?
1 - What song ten years later did this sample become a hit with a Total Recall sample included.

A - New Gold Dream (link above) by Simple Minds was used for Usura's "Open Your Mind", link below...

....which also features a sample from the Arnold Schwarzenegger film "Total Recall". check out the next link to see Kuato say the line to the song...

2 - What chant later became a dance twenty years later for a silva touch

A - "Chant No.1" by Spandau Ballet was later used in the club anthem "Touch Me" by Rui da Silva (it's the guitar in it).

3 - In 1978 these exile(s) wanted to do what!!!but 27 years on they were in a live element

A - Exile's "Kiss You All Over" was later sampled and used by Live Element in their hit(?) "Something About You".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIDpi0lo_pA

4 - a-corn-tree nut wasn't the first mr lonely, who was sped up to ludacris standards 40 years later.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbT5W4O0tZY
A - Akon sped up and used part of the chorus from the Bobby Vinton track from early 1965 called "Mr. Lonely".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbGanw6e5EY

5 - Right after a blue monday, this became a vamps techno by which doctors tool 28 years later
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLwrdp8RV5A
A - New Order followed up Blue Monday in 1983 with the club anthem "Confusion" which was later used in the first 'Blade' film, and then rehashed by Public Domain as the song Operation Blade (Bass in the Place)

January - March 2010 Quiz

A quiz devoted to the first three months of this decade:

1. Complete the line from the lead single from a recent #1 album in Australia: "If it's love..."

2. “I have very empowering lyrics for women. I kind of take how guys talk to women all over this industry and throw it back at them.”

Who said those words and which 2010 song's lyrics were they talking about?

3. Which song from the American Idol auditions last year became a viral hit as well as reaching #46 and #63 on the US and Canadian Hot 100 charts respectively this year?

4. Which Seattle "Big Four" band from the 1990s grunge scene announced a reunion in the first week of January after being inactive since May 1997?

5. Which currently-charting group had a hit several years earlier with a song titled "Drops of Jupiter"?

This is more trivia rather than a quiz.
1/1/2006 was the last chart where every song in the Top 50 had spent less than 20 weeks in the Top 50 chart!
http://australian-charts.com/weekchart.asp?cat=s&year=2006&date=20060101
Thanks for that DaveNT, had no idea. Has Great Nosteliga.
Can anyone post questions? I will anyway

1 What was the name of the song that gave Fergie her first taste of singing on a Billboard Top 50 track?

2 What were they called before becoming Craig McLachlan & Check 1- 2?

3 In December 1994 a song called Lucas With the Lid Off peaked at number 15. Fantastic track and great video. Exactly 15 years later, what new entry into the December charts had a connection with this song and why?

4 Aussie soap star Bruce Samazan released a single, what was this called?

5 Aussie pop band Euphoria failed to find success after their debut album. Who performaed the rap on their attempted comeback single Elated?

Apologies if they are too hard or too easy.

I will give it the weekend in case anyone wants to have a go and then give the answers. But thanks for the honest feedback Daniel
Didn't know #1
#2 - don't know the name, but remember their hits Rock The Rock, Mona and Amanda.
#3 ? (I vaguely remember the '94 hit)
#4 ? (kind of remember he had a release way back, but didn't get airplay)
#5 ??
I have a feeling #3 (connected with 'Lucas with the Lid Off') is Stan Walker 'Black Box' but I can't say why. Maybe they were both (co)produced or (co)written by the same person?

Agreed, these questions were honestly too hard.

I created a quiz.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/392414/world_top_40_of_2009

You have to name the Top 40 Songs of 2009 according to the United World Chart in three minutes, without an "artist" column to help you. Please don't cheat, and post your results here.

I got 40/40 of course, because I had just created it LOL.
I got 24/40. I had a mind blank and forgot so many easy ones. You should probably add a minute or two to the time limit.
Last edited:
11/40 i forgot many obvious ones
26/40 for me.
17/40, i sorta panicked LOL!
The point was that not everyone gets 100%, that's why I made it so short.
Fair enough, but don't be surprised if you get some negative comments from people who aren't as chart conscious complaining about its difficulty. If you want, try my quiz on 2000-2009 Aus #1s
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/aus_n1_2000
I got 127/168. The most recent one I failed to answer was Kate Dearaugo 'Maybe Tonight'.

Edit: tried it again and got a slightly different 127 right.
Last edited:
Woo I got 168/168 with exactly 2 minutes to spare. Sore hands after that. But yeah was pretty easy, the last few I got were Spinning Around as I kept writing I'm Spinning Around and was wondering why it wasn't accepting it and Without Me from Eminem. As he's had many #1's it wasn't as easy to list them, unlike with other artists who only had 1 or 2.

I had trouble with Britney, Delta and Guy especially the latter two, they have so many you forget them easily it seems. I found Eminem easy.
Also the Idol ones were difficult, as once the artist's dissapeared from the music scene you forget their songs too.
Britney was easy as she only had Oops I Did It Again, then Me Against The Music, Toxic and Everytime which were all close together. Delta was easy as she had 5 from the 1st album, 2 then 1.
On 392's quiz I only got 19/40. I don't floow the world charts much, so I got the ones from the top end of our 100 that made theirs, though I did forget to put down Just Dance, despite getting all the other GaGa's.

On Hijinx's quiz, I also got 168/168. I only had 50ish seconds to spare, but I had 164 with three minutes to go, having gone in order except for the four I couldn't immediately name. My final four were Hung Up, Lose Yourself (sure, I forget the longest running #1 of the decade!) Low (I kept blanking on the name) and Just Lose It. Finally I got there though. Having the artists was a great help.
I couldn't remember the Delta ones. 5 from 1 album, do you expect me to remember that

Those four songs you mentioned BZ were like my first four
I was going in order until I got to about Wheatus, then I decided I'd just do things like naming all of Britney's at once, then Delta, then the Idols/Popstars etc. Found that to be easier.
I found going in order easier, because I have the songs linked together in my mind from them charting together. So I'd think back to my personal chart, and try to think things like 'What Eminem song was charting around the same time as Delta's Out Of The Blue?' etc. Hung Up was one of my last four because I actually thought I'd already entered it back when I was entering Music, so I was trying to think of another Madonna song. Luckily I realised in time that I hadn't.

Delta was the easiest, especially as I was a massive fan back in the days of the first album. All you had to do was think of every Delta song ever released, and it was gonna be on the list!
I got 157/168. I start the quiz from the bottom and work my way until I can see all the answers so I don't have to scroll anymore. I blanked on a few Delta songs and stumbled on the words for a few (Listen With Your Heart).
i got 80/168 im happy with that

oh cool simon
Damn I missed the GaGa quiz.
I knew all of those answers though. I love that pic with bubbles xD
First of all let me apologise for making the questions hard that I posted last week. It was not my intention so please forgive. Next time I will heed the comments. But just in case anyone was curious I will elt you all know the answers.

1 What was the name of the song that gave Fergie her first taste of singing on a Billboard Top 50 track?
- Most got this right. Before the BEP, before her solo career, Fergie was the lead vocalist in the group Wild Orchid. They achieved some success with a few top100 songs, and "Talk To Me" was their first top 50 on Billboard. Great song.

2 What were they called before becoming Craig McLachlan & Check 1- 2?
- Craig McLachlan and The Y-Fronts (so glad they changed names)

3 In December 1994 a song called "Lucas With the Lid Off" peaked at number 15. Fantastic track and great video. Exactly 15 years later, what new entry into the December charts had a connection with this song and why?
- Lucas with the lid off was a great song. The grammy and MTV nominated video was completed in one continuous take, if you have not seen it or heard the song check it out on Youtube. The artists full name was Lucas Secon. After mild success singing, he turned to writing. He has written for loads of people including, Sugababes, Pussycat Dolls, Britney, Jordin Sparks, Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Kylie, JLS, Toni and so many more. 15 years after his top 15 hit in Australia, Stan Walker burst onto our charts with Black Box. Lucas was one of the credited writers of that track. With hits to his name like I Hate This Part, Gravity, Black Box and tracks from Kylie's new album, one of his tracks is probably on your Ipod right now.

4 Aussie soap star Bruce Samazan released a single, what was this called?
- At the height of his career Bruce had starred in Australias 3 prominent soapies, E-Street, Neighbours and Home And Away. Seeing as though Kylie and Jason had found success in singing, Bruce thought he would give it a go, putting out the rap single "One Of A Kind". The song flopped. I have the CD single, and reckon only a handful of others bought it

5 Aussie pop band Euphoria failed to find success after their debut album. Who performed the rap on their attempted comeback single Elated?
- Euphoria had two #1 singles from their debut album and other minor hits. "Love You Right" and "One In A Million" were going to be hard to follow up, but "Elated" was the first single form their to be released second album. With Jodhi Meares (later to be Packer) replacing outgoing Holly Garnett big things were expected, but Elated flopped and the second album never was released. The vocals of Jodhi had not helped the band at all. But she would go on to become very famous outside of music.

Sorry about the questions again, but I hope at least someone discovered something they did not know. Cheers
YES, I got Black Box right!

All right. 5/10 Hijinx. Good job.
I was just looking back through this thread and had no idea you'd been on this site for so long.
Want to do trivia in the chatroom Hijinx?
I might as well.
3. Sweet Disposition - Temper Trap
10. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys

5. Blah Blah Blah

Today's quiz:
1. Which single can claim to have the best start to its chart-run in its first 10 weeks on the chart?
2. Dancing In The Dark attained 53 weeks in the Top 50 in 1984-85. Second Solution / Prisoner Of Society achieved 47 weeks in 1998-99. Can you remember which single had the longest stay in the Top 50 in the time between these hits?
There are probably better answers, but I have:
1. Bryan Adams - Everything I Do (I Do It For You)
2. Guns N Roses - November Rain
For Question 1 didn't Eminem debut on top with 'Lose Youself' and stay there for twelve weeks? I think it'd be impossible to have a better first ten weeks than that.

I'd also say November Rain for Question 2.
Ah, of course. I forgot that one debuted at #1. At least I got the second best answer.
ok, so this quiz wasn't too hard.
1. Lose Yourself - Eminem
2. November Rain - Guns n' Roses (41 weeks including xmas break)
almost as long: Baby Don't Forget My Number - Milli Vanilli (38 weeks with xmas break)
Interesting quiz on guitar solos, with audio.
I got 17/36. A lot of 70s stuff, makes it tricky (for me)
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Aureolux/guitar_solos
I Gave up after 1 Minute.

The only 2 that I'am familar with are Beat It and November Rain so that's 2/36 for me.
I did this a couple of days ago and I think I got 14/36. One was driving me nuts and I couldn't figure it out, turned out it was Hotel California. D'oh!
If anyone remembers my pair of quizzes from half a year ago. I've made a third!

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/biggesthits_aus3

Given a random collective of 20 different artists, name their 5 highest peaking songs.

Enjoy!
I Got 34/100 but only because there were a few acts I didn't know.
I got 80 out of 100, so pretty good for me?
i only got 64/100, i had a real mindblank on Presidents of the USA and Taxiride and could only name one song of each
I failed with 35/100. At least I did better than Lifter
i got 44/100...

I got 89/100

But only by 1 392414 and I thought I was really shithouse.
I did that one, HeadInAMuse, and got 99. Stupid Joe...
Got 77 on your quiz Hijinx. Struggled a ridiculous amount with Roxette, somehow missing It Must Have Been Love. Pearl Jam were also tough.

On the quiz HIAM posted, I scored 91. Missed Disturbia, though I tried every other Rihanna single for it. Also missed Kanye's Stronger, and Usher's U Remind Me and Love In This Club. He has too many singles.
For Hijinx's quiz I scored 75. I can't believe I could only think of two Bryan Adams songs, and I got none for Presidents of the USA.

I scored 94 for HIAM's quiz. I'm not sure how I missed Burn and Hollaback Girl, I also missed Joe, Lil Wayne, Terror Squad and Alicia Keys (If I Ain't Got You).
Last edited:
I got only 81/100 for HIAM's

Songs I missed
Ashanti - Foolish
Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite
Terror Squad - Lean Back
Creed - With Arms Wide Open
Sean Paul - Get Busy
Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You
Jennifer Lopez feat Ja Rule - Ain't It Funny
Matchbox Twenty - Unwell
3 Doors Down - Here Without You
Chingy - Right Thurr
Joe - I Wanna Know
Matchbox Twenty - Bent
Ja Rule feat. Ashanti - Always on Time
Ludacris feat. Shawnna - Stand Up
Nickelback - Photograph
Usher - You Remind Me
Eve feat. Gwen Stefani - Let Me Blow Ya Mind
Missy Elliot - Work It
I got 86/100 on both quizzes
Helped on the first since I wrote it and remembered a few obscure Pearl Jam/Taxiride songs. Mustn't have been paying attention since I missed In Da Club!
43/100 Hijinx. Regret not getting some easy ones.
I Got 58/100 for HIAM's Quiz. Too many random Rap Artists.
Got 64% on Hijinx quiz and 83% on the American one
From 392's idea, I have turned my crazy prediction timewasting into a timewasting quiz. See how many number one hits you can decifer from their 'Hijinxed' titles.

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/CousinItIsAwesome

A few notes about it:
Since there are only about 300 ARIA number one hits to choose from, I have added the restriction of guessing in order, which means that you must click on the answer field you wish to use. This prevents brute force naming of every number one hit you can think of.
My goal was to vary the difficulty, so while many will be straight interpretations, watch out for a few cryptic ones.
Most importantly, enjoy, and then vent your frustration for missing what you should have gotten. Positive reception may inspire sequels.

those are crazy,i couldn't get most of them
Difficulty is a tough thing to gauge, maybe someone should try with the list of #1's on another page to see how they go.
I got 4 - the two 10's ones, KMS and RR - but I didn't try hard enough. I just wanted to know the answers ASAP

GREAT WORK though HIJINX
I got 23 out of 50, but you do really have to get into hijinx's mindspace to know how they think.
I found it easier to look at the year andtry to connect songs that way.

I also found a purpose to knowing what girt means in our national anthem.
THAT WAS AWESOME!

I got 28/50. It helped that I do cryptic crosswords sometimes, and also can sort of get into the way Hijinx is thinking sometimes. I would say though that there were too many for the ten minute limit, I barely got time to think about some of them before I realised I needed to move on. If I didn't get them instantly, there wasn't much time to work it out.

Sadly I missed "Vocally Express That This is How You Desire" for the 2010 clue. I must have remembered every other #1 this year bar the answer. My favourite was "Violently Engaging With a Bathing Vessel" but I didn't get it right. Like BillyBrett, knowing what girt means got me that answer, without knowing that I don't think I'd have got that one.

I'd love a sequel sometime for sure, but maybe with more time allowed, or fewer songs.

Probably a bit too late but the time limit has been increased to 13 minutes. I have already prepared one for songs in the 2009 EOY but I won't create it just yet.
Well, I could play again, but now I'll get 50/50. I'll look forward to the EOY 09 one though.
Here we go, here's the sequel, which consists of songs from the 2009 EOY

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/chumbawamba_bathtime

Enjoy!
Another fantastic effort. I love the name in the link as well.

I scored 16/25, which I thought was a pretty poor effort. I still found I didn't have enough time to think some of them through, but in a couple of cases I'd tried a song for one clue, and it was incorrect, but it fitted a later clue which I didn't attach it to.

Funniest clue this time was: A Canine Which I Quite Fancy. Once again I didn't get it right.
Beatles quiz for anyone interested.

Without looking them up try to fill in the blank lyrics taken from various Beatles song that were number 1 in either the US or UK:

1. _______ _______ children at your feet
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet

2. There's nothing you can do that can't be done
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to _____ ____ _____

3. In the town I _____ _____, Lived a man who sailed to sea,
And he told us of his life, In the land of submarines,

4. Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout
A pretty nurse is selling ______ ______ _ ______
And though she feels as if she's in a play
She is anyway

5. Suddenly I'm not ____ ___ ___ I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly

1. Lady Madonna
2 .
3. was born
4. poppies in a tray
5. half the man
Installment #3 now of the ludicrous quiz series, this time focusing on three decades of Madonna songs.

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/please_get_akon_a_cat_instead

Enjoy!
Another excellent effort! Despite me not being a massive Madonna fan, I actually found that one the easiest so far. Maybe I am getting used to working out the clues, but it might just have been easier focusing solely on one artist. After ripping through several, it was also helpful to remember any more songs and see if they fitted a clue I had left.

My score was 21/25. Can't wait for Instalment #4!
21/25 too
the answer to #2 on the beatles quiz was "play the game" BillyBrett correctly guessed the others
http://www.sporcle.com/games/Dircashede/no_artists_nyeh_nyeh

Attempt to input the entire top 100 singles EOY with no artist clues, it isn't easy, and even after studying the list all night/writing the quiz, I got 95/100.

Enjoy!
Haha, I just tried this quiz, pretty much straight after waking up. I managed to get 95/100 myself. Now to play again......

Nice work Hijinx!
I've been offering this in chat for a while, but I thought I may as well offer it here. Lately I've been quizzifying people's EOY charts in the way that I did the ARIA EOY two posts up. So essentially, I'm offering to do one for anyone upon request.

^ Or if you want to do other people's, find them below

Time to name and shame, try and guess who's made the most threads. It is not a compliment to appear on this list

http://www.sporcle.com/games/HijinxRandom/oh_ffs_hes_at_it_again
Awesome quiz! I cheated a little by scrolling through the site but I got 19/20 with 1 hidden one too
Still can't get that 2nd hidden one lol
I'm not sure why it's not a compliment Hijinx.
You wouldn't get it, since you appear on the list
19/20 with one hidden
Explain it to me then.
I got 18/20 and two hidden ones. Are there only two? The ones I got were 21st and 24th, I'd assume the places in between were filled too.

As for it being a compliment, well in some cases it's not a problem (ie: bulion's 289 is mostly relevant chartifacts threads) but in many others a lot of the threads that are started are pointless, making it not a compliment. On a completely unrelated topic, I was surprised to see a certain someone only just scrape into the top ten. :O
I got 16/20 and 2 hidden ones.

Surprised how high Bsb is.
I got 18/20, the 2 being irelander and Fliptop, and 2 hidden ones. I appreciated the acceptance of mangalore.
Kinda embarrassed that I made that list.
*2011 lyrics quiz*:

Guess which hits of this year the following lyrics are from:

Sometimes I just can't shut the hell up
It's like I need to tell someone, anyone who'll listen
And that's where I seem to fuck up

3.
I TURN THE MUSIC UP, I GOT MY RECORDS ON
I SHUT THE WORLD OUTSIDE UNTIL THE LIGHTS COME ON
MAYBE THE STREETS ALIGHT, MAYBE THE TREES ARE GONE

1. Panic At The Disco - The Ballad of Mona Lisa
Other 2 not too sure of, I'm not cheating by googling them.

Have I seriously made 26 threads? Wowsers.

I tried to do the one of mine from 2010. I struggled so much I gave up. Oh well I guess when the chart that was used wasn't a true personal chart your brain doesn't store the information that well. Or perhaps I have just wiped all the songs from 2010 out of my mind.
