DISCUSSION FORUM
Forum - Other Charts: Australia - Non ARIA - Triple J Hottest 100 2011

Voting opens December 14th, and will close on January 16th, with the broadcast to be held on January 26th. Get thinking!

Here's the official site link: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/11/
I'm eagerly excited to find out what will be #2.

I'm also interested to see which of my favourite songs of the year are actually eligible to vote
I already created a thread like this don't steal my thread ideas that's it i'm created another thread that exists
Jinx, none of your favourite songs of the year will be eligible to vote, only people are allowed to vote.

I'm hopeful Somebody That I Used To Know will be #1, but I don't think it's a certainty. That would be too awesome.
I actually was the first person to make a thread concerning the countdown, everyone's stealing my ideas! Who cares who did it anyway. We've got this one now.
My one is better
I hope #1 is Somebody That I used to Know as well. It's great when as Aussie artist get's it. Usually a lot of the songs that are popular during the voting period do the best so we could get a few surprising results.
Voting is open and my failed attempt at a FIRST! is complete

5. Shake It Out
6. Midnight City

12:00pm AEDST live across all states, so 9am for WA etc.
Thanks Hijinx looking forward to it my guess for No.1 is Lonely Boy hopefully

Call It What You Want

100. Art Vs Art - With Thoughts

Despite the #1 being obvious... the rest of theT10 looks wide open to me! Gonna be a fun countdown, go The Weeknd, Otis, and 212!!!
1. Gotye & Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know
2. Florence & The Machine - Shake It Out
3. Hilltop Hoods - I Love It {Ft. Sia}
4. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Otis
5. Calvin Harris - Feel So Close

7. Foster The People - Helena Beat
8. Boy & Bear - Feeding Line
9. 360 & Gossling - Boys Like You
10. Jebediah - She's Like A Comet

And for 100 I'd say Foo Fighters - Rope do you remember when Wheels was 100.

It's a shame that E.T. wasn't included in the list if it did that would surely take the top spot for sure.

I'm not talking about the original I was talking about the one with Kanye West in it.
Last edited:
100. Mr. Little Jeans - The Suburbs

The original version made #58 last year. This is a more trancey take on it from a Norwegian artist.
99. The Beards - You Should Consider Having Sex With A Bearded Man

Notably bearded Australian band who naturally did a ZZ Top cover when they were in for Like a Version.
98. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Ni**as In Paris

This wasn't on the voting list
97. Foo Fighters - Arlandria

"These Days" & "Walk" weren't on the list so I figured they wouldn't show up, perhaps Jay-Z/Kanye may mean it's possible?
Ok track, but prefer the other 3 releases
96. The Strokes - Machu Picchu

Something similar to my EOY position I believe 'Tis the opening track on their #1 album "Angles".
95. Grouplove - Naked Kids

More low-profile release from them, meaning you can be safe that Itchin' & Tongue Tied will figure much higher. "Colours" from the same EP barely missed the list last year
94. The Wombats - Our Perfect Disease

Overshadowed by the other 4 singles, but the best of the lot imo, and I voted for it
93. Kimbra - Two Way Street

3rd single release from "Vows" this year ("Settle Down" was last year), essentially locking "Cameo Lover" & "Good Intent" in for higher placements.
92. James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream

Buzzed about artist of 2011 whose album rose into the top 50 here at the start of the year.
Yay! One that I voted for!!! ^.^
91. City and Colour - Fragile Bird

Solo project from member of recently disbanded alexisonfire. The accompanying album reached #2 in Australia.
A solid start to the countdown. Only one song in the first ten which is dislike, that being Jay-Z/Kanye naturally. None of my votes have appeared yet, at best I'm thinking six of my ten will make it.
90. Beastie Boys - Make Some Noise

Umm, they released a really long film clip last year. I think it's been about a decade since they last made the annual list.
Last edited:
89. Beirut - Santa Fe

Another one of those moderately popular Australian (actually, nm they're from the US) artist/songs that I can never remember from the title alone.
Last edited:
I wonder if there will be a song in the bottom 50 which I like this year...
88. Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle

Supposedly one to watch in 2012, their album was featured last month.
87. Gotye - In Your Light

A George Michael comparison was made when it first premiered on radio and I've never been able to look past it, somehow expect more from him
Yeah, coz George Michael was such a crime to music.
86. Seeker Lover Keeper - Light All My Lights

Musical collective of Australian singers Holly Throsby, Sarah Blasko & Sally Seltmann. Made the top 100 new artists of 2011 according to last.fm
85. Cosmo Jarvis - Gay Pirates

And it's another semi-novelty song!
84. 360 (feat Josh Pyke) - Throw It Away

2nd single from the album from the most successful Australian artist in the singles chart of 2011. Expect the next two later.
I almost like this one. lol
83. The Kills - Future Starts Slow

I have nothing interesting to say.
So much excite!!! We just had a big Gay Pirates singalong at my party!
82. Little Dragon - Ritual Union

There's a Chinese restaurant near my house called Little Dragon! This variation is a band from Sweden.
81. Busby Marou - Biding My Time

last.fm recommends this band to me.
80. Pnau - The Truth

One of a few Australian songs to just barely miss the ARIA chart but still feature on the Australian ARIA chart [/goraiders]
79. SBTRKT (feat Little Dragon) - Wildfire

Thought it sounded like Little Dragon!
Last edited:
78. Husky - History's Door

I can't stress how awesome "The Woods" is atm. Oh, I guess this song was good too
77. Metronomy - The Look

Dunno what to say about this either, it's their first entry ever and is cool.
76. Redcoats - Dreamshaker

ANDISHOUTASOMEMOREOOMSOINGOIMO!
The Look's the only song so far I've charted
75. Skream & Example - Shot Yourself In The Foot Again

And the dubstep onslaught be-gi-gi-gi-gi-gi-gi-gi-gins
only good songs so far: Arlandria, Two Way Street, Gay Pirates
74. Drapht (feat NFA) - Bali Party

Sportsbet had this as a top 5 finisher, lulz.
Last edited:
73. Skrillex - First Of The Year (Equinox)

CALL 9-1-1 NOW!!!! if you're not a fan. And beware more Monsters & Sprites.
Just tuned in and what the hell is this crap?
lol zxcvcxz. As someone on here once put it... It's a robot taking a dump.
They shouldn't have dubstep on Triple J.
72. Flight Facilities (feat Jess) - Foreign Language

An anomoly for the chart, "Crave You" is clearly more popular, but this is their only charting hit. Also Jess is probably going to blow everyone away within a year
Lisa > Jess > Gossling
ooh.. I almost like this one too. Sounds like a throwback to the early noughties.
Enough talkback already! I want to listen to the music.
71. Luke Million - Arnold

No.
Fast forward please!
Good thing I've got the cricket on and not JJJ then Jinxie?
70. Jebediah - She's Like a Comet

Possibly suffering from early release, it's been years since they've featured!
Would have liked it if this was higher
For a top 50 song I thought this would be higher.
69. Bon Iver - Calgary

How very fitting! Hard to say what else they can get in.
Great song.
Urgh the talkback is painful. I have to leave soon. I want to listen to the music while I can.
68. Arctic Monkeys - Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair

As covered by Calling All Cars for Like a Version. Unless they get another entry, this will be the lowest they've ever finished at.
67. New Navy - Zimbabwe

The band will probably be disappointed as they were apparently aiming to land at #100 with this song.
66. Bon Iver - Perth

Take that *insert place where reader lives*
Perth 41 degrees
Paris, Beirut, Santa Fe, Bombay, Bali, Calgary, Zimbabwe, Perth - we're travelling
Last edited:
I showed my brother this song on a plane and he's like "Where's Adelaide?"
65. Kasabian - Re-Wired

Fun fact: This song was played earlier today, which ruins my theory
Awesome song.
64. Owl Eyes - Raiders

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
63. Foo Fighters - Rope

Two in a row for me! but too low
62. Stonefield - Black Water Rising

1st Unearthed High winners to make the top 100! Snakadaktal may still apear later though.
61. Radiohead - Lotus Flower

Interestingly places higher than anything from their "In Rainbows" album possibly due to a lack of a standout from that. Clearly one of the best film clips of the year too.
Yay Radiohead
60. Joe Goddard (feat Valentina) - Gabriel

Like C&C, in that it's a solo project for not the lead singer. Joe Goddard being from Hot Chip. This somehow charted on ARIA.
59. Washington - Holy Moses

#100 peaker on ARIA! Milk & Sticks also was.
58. Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

Spent numerous weeks at #1 in Greece I believe.
57. The Rubens - Lay It Down

Well what do you know? It did built up a reputation fast enough. One of the most played songs on the new Unearthed station.
This is quite nice. I didn't like this at first.
56. Sparkadia - China

Managed a brief chart run. Very "Baba O' Riley".
Awesome song. The first of my votes to appear.
Way too low (well, i predicted this at #19 ), and Great Song!
Travelling list continued - Paris, Beirut, Santa Fe, Bombay, Bali, Calgary, Zimbabwe, Perth, Washington, China...
Last edited:
55. Architecture In Helsinki - Escapee

Got surprisingly close to charting while they were on tour earlier this year. Also the shortest song to appear thus far I think.
Boy & Bear does sound like a gay nightclub.
Travelling list continued - Paris, Beirut, Santa Fe, Bombay, Bali, Calgary, Zimbabwe, Perth, Washington, China, Helsinki...
54. The Grates - Turn Me On

Yet another song that barely missed charting. imo Sweet Dreams would've been a better 1st single choice.
53. Bon Iver - Holocene

Ha! not in the top 50 Actually nominated for song and record of the year at the Grammy awards
I thought that most of the songs in the countdown were going to be new songs which I hadn't heard before. But I know most of the songs. I hope to hear a lot more new songs.
52. Kimbra - Good Intent

Kimbra's only solo charting song on ARIA to date.
51. The Drums - Money

Their first H100 hit!
50. Boy & Bear - Part Time Believer

Channelling "A Horse With No Name" perhaps? Made the Australian ARIA chart but not the actual chart after their ARIA Awards win.
Good way to start the Top 50
Great to see this do pretty well, though I wanted it higher.
49. Boy & Bear - Milk & Sticks

Despite many near misses, it's been about 3 years since last an artist had adjacent entries.
Two in a row , although 50 > 49
48. Art vs. Science - A.I.M. Fire!

And now AVS have featured 4 years in a row. Almost got this in the right spot with my prediction too.
Last edited:
47. Sparkadia - Mary

'Twas an ARIA Hitseeker entry I believe. This makes 4 entries overall for Sparkadia and 2 today.
46. Active Child - Hanging On

Actually helped its parent album to chart in Australia!
I have to go now I will have to go through the full list at the end of the day and listen to the songs that way.
45. The Kooks - Junk Of The Heart (Happy)

As featured in ABC promos, this is their 2nd entry after "Always Where I Need To Be".
44. Hermitude - Speak Of The Devil

Winner of the J Award for music video of the year, beating out Gotye, Bluejuice, Art vs. Science and others.
43. Grouplove - Itchin' on a Photograph

soooo close to entering the ARIA chart several months ago. It makes 2 entries for them today.
Missed a bit of the countdown because I was watching Peter Siddle nearly getting a hatrick.
Predicted this #41
42. Florence + The Machine - What The Water Gave Me

Her 5th entry overall and 1st today.
41. The Strokes - Under Cover Of Darkness

Awesome.
40. Foster The People - Houdini

I predicted this at #41!!!!
I predicted Foster The People at #40 - but wrong song
39. Benny Benassi (feat Gary Go) - Cinema (Skrillex remix)

Listen to the original omg!
- both versions -

38. Ball Park Music - All I Want Is You

First ever appearance for the 2011 Unearthed J Award winners.
- hope It's Nice To Be Alive is higher
37. 360 - Killer

It's a 360 song that doesn't feature someone!
36. Florence + The Machine - No Light, No Light

2nd entry today, with "Shake It Out" probably still to come.
This is the time where I depart. See ya!
35. Illy - Cigarettes

The lack of Old Man loses it 6 places
34. Gotye - I Feel Better

Surely it's his last entry for the day
33. Jay-Z & Kanye West (feat Otis Redding) - Otis

2nd entry for them today, and first entry for Otis Redding!
32. Noah & The Whale - L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.

I'm officially over typing this song title
Nice surprise to see this get so high. It's certainly better than Otis.
31. Ball Park Music - It's Nice To Be Alive

And that makes 2 entries for them too. This also made the top 5 for the Rage top 50 late last year.
good song
30. Calvin Harris (feat Kelis) - Bounce

One of only 3 ARIA top 10 entries in contention I think, and one of the others is by Calvin Harris too!
29. Drapht - Sing It (The Life Of Riley)

his 2nd entry today and 5th overall. This is probably one of the highest selling songs not to chart this year. Unless it charts this week
28. Owl Eyes - Pumped Up Kicks {Like a Version}

Yep, higher than the original.
27. Example - Changed The Way You Kiss Me

UK #1 that also went platinum here.
The original is better and this presumably got some of the votes the original would have scored if they'd not been stupid and had included it.
26. The Wombats - Techno Fan

Their 2nd entry today and assumably not their last.
25. Kimbra - Cameo Lover

Her 3rd entry today, I suppose technically she has the most entries today.
24. The Wombats - 1996

How is Techno Fan not even their 2nd highest song?!!
23. Emma Louise - Jungle

1 off another pred!!!
Hopefully "Shake It Out", reaches the Top 10.

Love "Feel So Close", deserves to be #1! let there be an upset win this year.
22. Snakadaktal - Air

21. Skrillex - Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites

Well it had to be in there.
20. Bluejuice - Act Yr Age

Being consistent, this is their 3rd top 20 to date.
19. Nero - Promises

Somehow a UK #1 hit.
18. The Wombats - Jump Into The Fog

And that is their 4th entry which assumably gives them the most for the day.
generally good songs, if the pumped up kids original was allowed then it would be top 5 if not contention for #1. JJJ need to change the rules next year, if enough complain and obvious song should be allowed to chart two years in a row, if the second year was more appropriate then the first, as in this case.

Love Jump into the Fog btw.

17. Seeker Lover Keeper - Even Though I'm A Woman

two entries for the day.
Amazing last 4 songs!
16. Grouplove - Tongue Tied

As featured on an Apple ad approximately around the time of voting.
I love that they said your favourite songs of last year when really it is just your favourite songs from the voting period.. Would love to see some analysis of when songs were released and their placings.
15. Foster The People - Helena Beat

For about half a year, this was their biggest hit in Australia!
14. Foster The People - Call It What You Want

Just like Boy & Bear earlier, it's two in a row!

good double from Foster the People despite my Foster the People related rant above.

Good commentary Hijinx.
Holy shit yes! So far it's a great Top 20. And I agree with Happy on changing the rules next year...
13. Florence + The Machine - Shake It Out

And that makes 3 entries. This doesn't quite match "Dog Days Are Over" placing #10 though.

Cheers happypeople, the terrible weather has rolled in and my motivation is lacking, but I shall continue!
One of the best songs of recent years! Shake It Out:
12. Architecture In Helsinki - Contact High

Their highest ever entry!
Songs are allowed to chart two years in a row. They just don't put them on their shortlist of songs for two years running, which is a good move imo.
love this song, great band too
11. Calvin Harris - Feel So Close

And that makes 2 entries for the day, also take that Bounce
one of my fav tracks of the year, feel so close to the top 10.
10. Hilltop Hoods (feat Sia) - I Love It

One of the most recent entries which just cracked the top 10 on iTunes. It's also the lowest placement they've gotten for any of their major albums, unless they can improve in the next year.

just getting into this song over the past 2 weeks, great track, love sia here and hilltops are solid as always
9. The Jezabels - Endless Summer

Now their highest placed song, in addition to being their highest charting song on ARIA.
20-11 is good, but would've like to have seen Skrillex in Top 20
Looks like I'm on track for 1/50 this year.
8. 360 (feat Gossling) - Boys Like You

360 won the Oz Artist of 2011 award. This song is also very high in the charts atm.
7. San Cisco - Awkward

Perhaps this bonus promotion can give them the added boost they need to beat their #74 peak
20-7 (save for #11), have been great so far...I want Boy In A Box and Jamie Woon! Wishful thinking though
6. Lana Del Rey - Video Games

I like it
One off
Only the 7th time it's happened to me Trav
M83 are fucking amazing!
5. M83 - Midnight City

Highest non-charting song in the list. M83 have never featured before.
4. Boy & Bear - Feeding Line

Just edging out their placement with "Fall At Your Feet" last year. Hurry up and certify it gold!
3. Matt Corby - Brother

Beats out Lisa Mitchell to have the highest placing song from an Idol contestant, but guess who's had the most songs feature?
...Just started to like 'Brother'...
2. The Black Keys - Lonely Boy

Last year they featured in the countdown for the 2nd and 3rd time ever, but about 70 places lower.
Last edited:
love this song, one of the best rock songs in years
So what will be #1? How exciting to find out...
Lonely Boy #2
anticipation builds, whatever could it be?
1. Gotye (feat Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used To Know

Shock of the year!
Trav, your post has been deleted, no one likes spoilers
Best song of the year! Completely deserved!
One of the great songs of ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!
congrats Gotye.

Thanks for counting down Hijinx and good commentary.
Well done. It was definitely higher in my EOY in 2011 than BJP was in 2010. I just wished Otis was a bit higher, and the lack of Girls is a bit unfortunate too.
Wooo! GO GOTYE. What a year it has been for him. Also, congrats to Kimbra too, who features on the track.
Great Top 10 (well, Top 11) this year. Til next year...
Predictions - 3/50 - 6% and/or 3/10 - 30%

Sorry hijinx for the spoiler alert

Hopefully they ban dubstep and club songs for next year.
Is there a way to see #101-200? I want to see what songs didn't make it.
Probably in a week or so zxcv. I'll post it as soon as I see it.

I actually really like most of the top 50

great countdown this year then!
awesome to see the rises its caused on itunes
Best Track in the List by far got #1. Well deserved, perhaps my favourite JJJ #1 ever.
I will never vote for Eskimo Joe again! I got jinxed it was in the voting section but it never reached the 100.

But overall I had 4 out of 5 in there.

My voted songs are at 33, 11, 4 and 1.

Only one didn't make the chart and that was Love Is A Drug by Eskimo Joe or was that 101?.
1, 378, 859 votes cast for the triple j Hottest 100 by 158, 258 voters — 9% up on last year. 43% of voters were from Australia, with 27% from the US, 22% from the UK and the remainder from rest of the world. Of the Australian voters, 16% came from NSW and Victoria each, 5% from Qld, 4% from SA and 3% from WA.10% of the entries were by acts with animal names.
Surprised that only 43% were from Australia. Didn't think it was that worldwide!
