* Gotye's LP "Making Mirrors" has a new chart peak this week at no.#45.
Out of curiousity just what the hell is the proper title of Kelly's song. On my album it says What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger). But now that it's a single it's called Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You). For some reason this is really anoying me.
I thought it was because the word 'Stronger' appears more in the lyrics and it was a (beyond) last minute attempt to make it more marketable or something lol, but I prefer it as Chris said.

(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To
G'day, it's just a play on the words, generally it's a case of taking the most used choroused lyrics to gain the best/most exposure for the song...especially if it's the lead single off a new album.
G'day, here's this weeks top 10 US albums & singles, week ending 18/02/2012.
US ALBUMS 1. 21 - Adele 2. Born To Die - Lana Del Rey 3. Old Ideas - Leonard Cohen 4. 2012 Grammy Nominees - Various Artists 5. Kidz Bop 21 - Kidz Bop Kids 6. Take Care - Drake 7. Emotional Traffic - Tim McGraw 8. God, Love & Romance - Fred Hammond 9. Sorry For Party Rocking - LMFAO 10. Talk That Talk - Rihanna

* Gotye's album "Making Mirrors" is now at no.#20 on the Hot200.
Ewwwwww why is Rihanna top 10 on albums. Go Kelly though, very pleased to see that #1 as well as LMFAO plumetting. If only We Found Love would go out at the same rate too. A little sad to see Lana Del Rey miss out on #1.

Thought I had already commented, but it is nice to see Billboard finally get with the times and allow a 'recurrent' song to re-enter the chart (Top 50) if it has sold in enough quantities to do so.
Just like the impact of Michael Jackson's death prompted them to rethink the appearance of Catalogue albums, it would seem that the repeat with Whitney's song has made them re-evaluate the catalogue songs.
Not that I can see this happening, but maybe one day they'll realise that digital sales means radio airplay can be diminished again.
I'm in the camp that thinks Billboard should keep the Airplay Charts intergrated into the top 100, so until people like me will start changing their minds (which is unlikely) the Airplay will be here to stay.
I don't mind if airplay stays in the chart (but would prefer it gone), but I think they need to go back to the ratio that existed in the 90s. Sales used to be weighted more than radio play, but with the demise of the CD single Billboard changed the ratio so airplay was the major factor. With the arrival of digital sales and the large sales they bring, I think it is time for Billboard to re-evaluate the ratios used.
G'day, here's this weeks top 10 US albums & singles, week ending 03/03/2012.
US ALBUMS 1. 21 - Adele 2. Whitney : The Greatest Hits - Whitney Houston 3. NOW 41 - Various Artists 4. 19 - Adele 5. 2012 Grammy Nominees - Various Artists 6. A Different Kind Of Truth - Van Halen 7. Kisses On The Bottom - Paul McCartney 8. Doo-Wops & Hooligans - Bruno Mars 9. Own The Night - Lady Antebellum 10. Barton Hollows - The Civil Wars
US SINGLES 1. Part Of Me - Katy Perry 2. Set Fire To The Rain - Adele 3. I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston 4. Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson 5. Rolling In The Deep - Adele 6. We Are Young - Fun. ft. Janelle Monae 7. Someone Like You - Adele 8. We Found Love - Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris 9. Starships - Nicki Minaj 10. Turn Up The Music - Chris Brown
I could be wrong here, but I was under the impression that there isn't really any weighting involved, apart from it being that 1,000 audience impressions equates to 1 sale (I think the top songs at a time are around 100-150AI). And from this, I find that airplay is not as major a factor as sales, at least in the top end of the chart. Just for example, compare the positions last week of We Are Young & The One That Got Away, where the former is flailing in airplay and selling strongly, and the latter is the opposite. I'm repeating myself here, but the only reason I'd like the chart to be sales only is for credibility (though this doesn't stop people from criticising the ARIA charts through similar misconceptions). Although on the other hand, I'd be interested to see if without the airplay, the pop/urban monopoly on the charts would be as strong.
The thoughts of someone who isn't fully revitalised from not enough sleep, so I've probably said something wrong here!
You're right, what I meant with doubling the weighting is that instead of (for example) 1000 audience = 1 sale, it is 2000 audience = 1 sale, effectively halving the airplay contribution (and therefore doubling the relative sales "weighting").
That could work, although I do like how it is at the moment because it's easier to keep track of. Actually, how are digital sales going in the US? Surely if they exploded the way they have here, the problem would sort itself out?
The thing that irritates me in the States is that a song can sit at #1 on the digital chart all week and then struggle to debut in the top 10.
Dropping the airplay factor has meant a wider variety of songs reaching #1, which is good to see. There was a period from roughly 2001-2006 where all songs were pretty much from one genre that reached #1 (bar the Idol #1's).
And sales are huge in the States at the moment as well. I can't find proper sales figures for the pre-digital era, but songs like 'Party Rock Anthem' and 'Rolling In The Deep' have all sold over six million copies, yet 'We Belong Together' (Mariah Carey), the number one single for 14 weeks, only shipped platinum. So there's definitely enough sales to merit an increase in sales weighting I reckon.
G'day, here's this weeks top 10 US albums & singles, week ending 10/03/2012.

We Found Love - Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris
It's bigger than that now. I can't think of any bigger hit since "I Knew I Loved You" by Savage Garden. I also don't know of any higher charting song by a New Zealand artist (referring to Kimbra). Maybe someone else knows one? (How Bizarre was airplay only at the time, so it doesn't count)
G'day, here's this weeks top 10 US albums & singles, week ending 24/03/2012.

Gotye's "Making Mirrors" has a new chart peak on the Hot 200 at #16.
Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" has reached an amazing milestone of 800 weeks in the Hot 200
G'day, @ chartguru...is that in direction at Pink Floyd's achievment..or just in general...if it's the later that happen's every week in record stores too get rid of old stock...if it's the former...i doubt it's happened for the last 16 years for one particular album....lol
It's in response to antonnalan's surprise at Mylo Xyloto being at #5. A bunch of other albums in the top ten this week also benefited. The 25c albums obviously had massive sales increases (it was 25c online, not in physical stores).
As for Pink Floyd, remember it was excluded from the chart for 21 years, so it should have an even higher number of weeks in - a pretty awesome achievement either way
Yeah the 25c thing was a special promo on iTunes or Amazon I think. Where all the albums in the top 10 but 2 were available for 25c for one day. I think I read it was one day. It couldn't be a full week otherwise those sales wouldnt' have counted towards the chart, Billboard changed the rules about discounting after the Lady GaGa/Amazon deal I believe. So one day of chepa music is fine just not a whole week.
It was one day. They would still have counted even if it was for the whole week though because the Billboard policy only applies to albums in their first 4 weeks of release. Hopefully they update their policy soon.
I might sound like a whinger but considering we ask people to respect not spoiling the Australian charts until it is unveiled in full on the countdown despite certain parts being printed in papers on Sunday or on auspOp website, is it possible to wait until Billboard officially releases the full charts late Thursday night (AEST) online before celebrating certain acts success? Just looking at that Top 10 of the singles the Top 3 have all featured on Glee (and pretty much owe there highest peak because of Glee), another one further down has featured on Glee. So that's 40% Glee influenced. And apparently #4 is going to be performed in an upcoming episdoe and it wouldn't surprise me if 5,8 and 10 were performed before the year ended.

LOL Hijinx, considering acts like Crash Test Dummies or Sandhi Thom or even Culture Beat are considered to be one hit wonders, I think Gotye has a while to go before he loses the title of being a one hit wonder
Don't forget Hanson & Rick Astley, depending where you read
But it really is the silliest thing, there need to be specified terms to separate artists who literally only have one song, artists who only have one song that really anyone cares about, artists who only have one song that anyone remembers despite the success of others, artists who have had long and successful careers that at some point scored them one major hit, artists who coast a career following a major hit but don't do anything to build a fanbase, the list goes on!
G'day, i was always under the belief that a "One Hit Wonder" was exactly that...one hit (charting hit).
But what is a hit??? No#.1, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, Top 40 etc... i guess what makes a hit would vary from person to person also...which only complicates it further...this is already doin' my head in....lol...i give up

I know our ARIA Chart only lists the Australian acts that crack the Top 100. But according to the Billboard website Human Nature debut last week at #120 with Motown Record.

Oh my goodness!* I just found out that Olly Murs' Heart Skips A Beat has bulleted into the US Pop Airplay top 50. If it becomes a hit there, that might translate to here!
Ed Sheeran AND Olly now, would be awesome if they could crack that US Market!

The way the US charts work is that once a song reaches 20 weeks in the top 100, if it drops below #50 it'll go recurrent and cannot chart again. Which is what happened with WRTN.
Hijinx, there is a slight * to your statement. It can stay longer on the charts after 20 weeks, if it is still being actively promoted on Radio or some crap like that. It's why Of Monsters & Men are still charting even though they have dipped below 50 this week.
Cheers Billy I was waiting for someone to pick up on that and I didn't fully understand it enough to mention it. The same thing applies to Burn it Down this week, and Time is Love a few weeks ago.

I just read on Billboard that Rihanna is in the league of Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, The Supremes, Madonna and The Beatles in terms of number of #1s. That depresses me, cause when we begin to reflect on this era of music in the grand scheme of music as a whole, I don't think Rihanna will really be mentioned in the same breath as these artists in terms of contribution to the development of music like the other artists.

Big call Hijinx, Considering there is approx 40 songs that should make the ARIA 2012 year end and a further 13 of which featured in the ARIA 2011 year end it really doesn't allow for the urban hits as well as the country hits and most of them were blah anyway.
I'd rather see hits like: Lonely Boy, Never Let Me Go, Feel The Love, Brother, I Won't Let You Go, Battle Scars, Little Talks, Don't You Worry Child, Thrift Shop, Lego House, Hall Of Fame, The Fighter, Sweet Nothing, Bangarang, I Love It, Locked Out Of Heaven, Hey Hey Hey, Try, Girl On Fire, She Wolf over any of the 40 songs that will fail to make the ARIA year end that featured in the Billboard Hot 100 year end.
Also, Ho Hey should be a hit in the early part of 2013 so should make next years year end.

Late reply but that's where we differ, I think the ARIA chart could use a healthier dosage of urban and country. Maybe not Dance (A$$)'s or Red Solo Cups (although they could be classified as so bad it's good) but there's plenty of quality in there. Also CMM wasn't #1
