Yes, the Australian version of the popular show is beginning this Sunday (15th April) on Channel Nine. Judges this year: Joel Madden (from Good Charlotte), Seal, Delta Goodrem, and Keith Urban. What are your thoughts on the show, and how successful do you think this will rate?
I like the idea of The Voice but it gets boring towards the end (well the American version anyway). And some of the singers weren't very good. Good lot of judges though, I reckon.
I just hate the promotion of the initial concept. Yes you get through the 'first' audition purely on your voice but then after that you can not tell me that looks don't play a part in the final outcome, especially with the voting audience. The Voice would work best as a radio show.
They had some good judges on the original season of the original version made for some good episodes when it started with the auditions for trainers/judgers to choose their singers. The only beef I have with the show is that it's seems like a way of cashing in on the Idol concept. And what originality it may have will never re-create the magic of Idol with it's memorable moments over the years such as:
*42/43% of Americans in a poll thinking that Simon Cowell was sexy while the other 57/58%% thought he sucked (circa 2003) *William Hung becoming Hong Kong Ricky Martin in America (2004) *Guy Sebastian being the winner of Australian Idol (got a poster somewhere I wonder what happened to it)
I'll hold on to the thought that with The Voice and The X Factor being in Australia perhaps Australia's Got Talent will go to someone not linked with music this year.
Of course looks play a part. Idol seems to have had a different style of winner every year depending on look and or styles of music that were popular at the time.
Guy had the Islander in him Casey had the Aboriginal in her Kate had the blonde Aussie in her Damien had the Irish in him Natalie had the European in her Wes had the hippy red neck in him and Stan had the Kiwi in him.
Not all these people were marketable, however, each of them were different. I am surprised we never had an African American winner but look at American Idol. They cover all types of looks and styles of music.
Simon Cowell seems to know which artists to market. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Leona Lewis and One Direction have all shown global popularity and most of these are based on talent.
The Voice had a great concept to start with but I agree it got boring. Plus the 4 judges on the American version covered 4 styles that were very popular in America. Hip hop, rock, pop and country. I don't think Australia has the same variety as America. Interesting choice of judges though.
What do you think of the past two shows? Are you impressed or disappointed. I think there were too many summaries in the show, and the 'pre-recorded' vibe was blatantly obvious, but then again, the quality of most singers was actually quite good. Note- I get the delayed telecast
I have watched most varieties of these types of show's over the years and after two shows all I can say is wow! Yeah the pre-recorded summeries and 'oh how my life is so hard' is a bit clichéd but at the end of the day everybody has a story to tell. Hopefully it doesn't lose it's appeal after the first auditions because i'm really enjoying it right now.
Delta Goodrem - Sitting On Top Of The World (#2) Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights (#11 + #85) Karise Eden (James Brown) - It's A Man's Man's World (#17) Regina Spektor - Samson (#27) Rachel Leahcar (Édith Piaf) - La Vie en rose (#30) Caset Withos (Regina Spektor) - Samson (#31) Keith Urban - Making Memories Of Us (#34 + #83) Seal - Kiss From A Rose (#42 + #58 + #93) Seal - Crazy (#48 + #75) Coldplay - Yellow (#69) Adam Martin (OneRepublic) - Apologize (#97)
I haven't watched yet, I'm not a fan ofthe audition stages of these types of shows no matter the talent on hand. But in regards to iTunes what is being sold. A live audition or have they gone back after being chosen and recorded their audition in the studio.
I'm finding it interesting that this week's Voice songs are struggling to make a true impact on the iTunes chart. Is the novelty of buying the audition pieces already worn off. From my understanding this week's episodes have been viewed by more people than last week, so you would expect a correlation on the iTunes charts. Cause to be honest I have found no diference in the quality of performaners or song choices between the two weeks.
Or should I view th world more skeptically and say that Nine hired people to buy the songs last week to help with the promotion and claim that The Voice is the biggest TV show in the world,
It's now up to the 2nd stage - the 'Battle Rounds'. Judges/mentors Seal & Ricki-Lee Coulter Joel & Benji Madden Delta & Darren Hayes Keith & Megan Washington
The Battle Rounds I found to be incredibly boring. Too much talking and not enough singing. Too much of the judges pretending they know what they are doing. I will admit that the concept of the battle round is an interesting concept for this type of show. However I think some of the combinations were made for advertisements eg Mahalia vs Prinnie.
I'm still shocked that Seal chose that 16 year old girl in Love the Way You Lie. To me she sounded terrible - Seal claimed it was connecting to the song and crying. O-K
Well most of them were an easy choice for mine. But Seal is an idiot for putting Karise up against Paula, but I see why with all the advertising it got. But sad to see Paula go. Personally, she was my favourite.
I like Fatai, but she didn't sound as good as she was for her blind audition so BillyBrett's right, she was lucky to get through. But she'll do a pretty good job from here on in.
Great to see they picked Prinnie her presence on stage combining with her voice is a winning combination. I'll be rooting for her now. And hopefully Carmen Smith (Jess Mauboy, Guy Sebastian, Stan Walker back up singer) gets through, I love her swag and soulful persona. So personally their my two favourites. I'm really enjoying it all in all. Much better then any of our reality shows of the same kind, because it's the first show where all the contestants are good, and there's no bringing in shitty singers for advertising and humour.
These are the songs being performed on tomorrow night's episode:
Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) Earth, Wind & Fire - Got To Get You Into My Life Heart - Alone Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) One Direction - One Thing The Living End - White Noise Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind (Part II) Broken Down Jewel - Hands Rick Price - Heaven Knows Rebecca Ferguson - Nothing's Real But Love Simple Plan - Summer Paradise David Guetta Featuring Usher - Without You Last edited:
Paul Young - Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home) Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me Jes Hudak & George Krikes - Different Worlds The Black Keys - Lonely Boy Jason Derulo - Fight For You Ed Sheeran - Lego House Beyonce - Listen (From Dreamgirls) David Guetta Featuring Nicki Minaj - Turn Me On Youth Group - Forever Young Gotye Featuring Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know Last edited:
Also, Carmen Smith has been kicked off the voice because she performed in Guy Sebastian's music video 'Gold'. What do you thinK? IMO, that is rather stupid, and they just should've let her stay. Also, there was a huge push for Mahalia Barnes to return (who Carmen beat in the Battle Rounds), but the producers said no.
Hmm I'm really not sure what to make of Carmen's removal. Unfortunately my opinion is clouded by the fact that I personally don't like her voice, so its no great loss to me and I'm not heavily invested at all in this show.
Not having read the fine print to the audtion contract and what not, I'm not sure how much of the contract she breached by perfoming on Guy's record and being in the clip.
The cynic in me sees the main reason most likely being she is being currently utilised by a member of Sony, while The Voice music is distributed by Universal (I think, I may be wrong) AND Guy is a judge on a rival talent show (even though they have no probs using this angle for his brother).
In terms of official reason, I kinda see their reasoning. In theory that clip and the song will expose her to more people than say gigging at the pub while the show is on, or blogging on the internet. Plus it does make a slight mockery of the show if she is already on a single - but I imagine her uncredited performance on the song is linked to her involvement in The Voice.
In regards to the return of Mahlia Barnes, that is just stupid. Mahalia battled against Prinnie Stevens so shouldn't get a second bite of the cherry, if they were to bring back anyone in theory (to be fair) it should be the person who Carmen battled against. And to be honest, I'm happy Nine have taken the decision of removing only one contestant of Joel's. Sensible move.
I thought Carmen's exit was fair. She had an amazing voice but her fashion sense and style annoyed me. She looked much prettier with her hair done up and not let loose and all over the place like we saw tonight.
As for tonights show:
Laykn's performance was a big let down I thought but having the cute and popularity factor will save him. I agreed with Seal's comments. Poor song choice especially for a song that has been so painfully re-done.
The girls once again shone tonight. Quite enjoyed "Turn Me On", "Listen", "Different Worlds" and especially "Love On Top". Only female performace that was on the average side but still somewhat good was "Somebody That I Used To Know."
As for the blokes. "Lego House" was probably my fave tonight and probably the only male performance I really liked. "Lonely Boy" wasn't too bad. "Where I Lay My Hat" didn't do anything for me. Personally this performer bores me. "Fight For You" was on the meh side and worst performance of the night would have to go to "Sweet Child O Mine" which is a big shame because he could have really kicked butt!
Joel's team is much stronger and is hard to predict who will get the boot. Keith's team is weaker and I think it's a fair call that the ladies should be safe next week.
I would like to see Chris Sebastian leave this comp. He annoys me for some reason.
Looking by what enters the top 100 from The Voice performances looks like these acts are in the hot seat for elimination:
From Team Joel it looks like we might be saying goodbye to Prinnie who sang "Turn Me On". Personally I didn't find her performance the worst. Laykn's was pretty ordinary out of that team and he really looked high or stoned.
From team Keith I have to agree that Jimmy Couples version of "Sweet Child O Mine" was the worst of the night and Taga's performance of "Fight For You" was ok, nothing special. The other four performers were miles high compared to these two.
So Prinnie, Jimmy and Taga should be getting the boot this week.
Ugh! I am really sick of seeing these awful "singers" being allowed to chart with ARIA, someone obviously got a kickback somewhere to let them do this I mean Lakyn Heperi????? Top 10 Australian artist? You have got to be f**king kidding me, a bleating lamb has better vocal presence...
What about artists who deserve a Top 50 placing eg LOREEN - EUPHORIA?
I used to be such a fan of the ARIA chart/report and was a long time subscriber however week by week, month by month their integrity seems to be slipping. :-(
IMO people like Mahalia Barnes really shouldn't be part of this show, she has released CDs that went nowhere, she has family in the music industry who obviously don't support her
Also funny to know as you Idol nuts like me will know how Prinnie Stevens is on the show after being an Idol back up singer for a few seasons and being Guy Sebastian's back up, then Chris Sebastian, no explanation needed or wanted I'm sure, then there is the chick who was DQed for being in Guy's new video. Just how "blind" are these auditions!???!?! It sounds like some record exec pooled a group of hangers-on in the industry to milk some success from their affiliation with family/previous careers. My only exception to this would be REBECCA TAPIA, my gosh has this girl been robbed, beautiful, talented and an allround talent, while her The Voice performance was nothing short of a car crash (as the rest of the show seems to be), she had female lead in The Lion King theatre performance alongside another Idol auditionee and Good Guys posterboy Turanga Merito, what a shame no one will even offer her a 1 single deal. Last edited:
The only blind thing about the audition is the judges don't visuallysee the contender. The producers have been quite open about how they searched the country. There were no cattle call auditions (apart from youtube) that's why there were no stereotypical bad auditions like other shows. Since the producers have been honest about where they located the talent I have no problem with who audition. In fact a number of country artists who have been nominated for Golden guitars auditioned. And even someone who has wn at least 1 i believe auditioned.
Ne-Yo - Closer Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit Ella Fitzgerald - Someone To Watch Over Me Beyonce - Ave Maria (3rd Beyonce song to be covered now) David Guetta Featuring Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over Fleetwood Mac - Landslide Seal - I Can't Stand The Rain Burt Bacharach - The Look Of Love
Another round of pretty uninspiring performances. Only (slight) surprise of the night was Prinnie getting through over Laura Bunting considering she didn't chart.
^^ I wasn't too surprised by that. Prinnie is a much better performer. Of course Laura was always going to chart singing Gotye even though she pretty much butchered it
Avril Lavigne - I'm With You Whitney Houston - How Will I Know Chris Brown - Forever The Cure - Friday I'm In Love Stevie Wonder - I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever) Bonnie Raitt - I Can't Make You Love Me Silverchair - Straight Lines Dire Straits - Romeo and Juliet Last edited:

To be honest, I’m not a fan of the elimination process where two from each team is eliminated, but not collectively. Also, I think Seal and Keith choose decent songs for their artists, but Delta and Joel are starting to choose poor songs for most of their mentors. Also, isn’t it a coincidence how they choose good songs for the favourites? Anyway, a few weeks left in the show. What do you still think of the show?
songs to be performed on Monday's show (June 11th):
Bryan Adams - Heaven Il Divo - Nights In White Satin (Notte De Luce) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah Donna Summer - On The Radio T-Bone Walker - Stormy Monday Blues The Temper Trap - Love Lost Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E's In Love Rose Royce - Love Don't Live Here Anymore Jason Derulo - Breathing Leon Russell - A Song For You Tiffany Taylor & Company - Here's Where I Stand
I fear Brittany Cairns is in danger of elimination - bad song choice, despite having a #1 on itunes earlier in the show. Think Keith might put her through though, she looks like she could be an artist beyond the show.
I assume that's a tentative list Chris? Since there'll only be 8 contestants left by then, and it's not yet known which Team Joel/Keith members will go through. Groan at the inevitable Hallelujah cover.
Team Joel: - Ben Hazlewood (public vote) - Sarah De Bono (coach's vote) (Lakyn Heperi (how long do they want to wait to get rid of this guy?) and Prinnie Stevens eliminated)
Team Keith: - Darren Percival (public vote) - Brittney Cairns (coach's vote) - think he may save her knowing her talent and because of his bad song choice, however either two of DR and AM may be chosen - a tough one! (Diana Rouvas and Adam Martin eliminated)

The final shows are coming up, with the semi-finals starting Monday. Here are my favourites so far - Rachael Leahcar, Darren Percival, Brittany Cairns. Who I think will win? Probably Rachael or Karise, with Darren and Ben coming close.
What do you think so far of the show at this stage?
Team Delta: Glenn Cunningham, Rachael Leahcar Team Seal: Karise Eden, Fatai Veamatahau Teal Joel: Ben Hazelwood, Sarah De Bono, Lakyn Heperi, Prinnie Stevens Team Keith: Darren Percival, Diana Rouvas, Brittany Cairns, Adam Martin (the latter two from the last two team are predicted to go)
They will be down to the final 4 by the end of Monday night, the first four will be eliminated at the start, and then at the end the judges pick who they want to represent their team.
I thought with the Final 8, what happened was the public voted for the representative of each team. And with the dodgy money making ways of the Australian version, we won't know that until next Sunday, when they reveal the results, then they sing the songs and the winner is announced on Monday
But it doesnt cause as much pain to people it seems cause it isn;t accredited to the generic term The Voice Cast. Which if glee actually accredited it to the performers, you would find the statistics would change a lot.

Sunday 7:30pm for performances, and Monday 7:30pm for the announcement...
I really am confused with what the hell this show has done. I thought the way it would work is last night people sang to get into the final based upon the public vote the results would be announced on Sunday, leaving 1 member of each team to sing for the win. We vote for a day and then the winner announced in a 5 hour finale.
I really dont understand the logic of the judges deciding who made the final. Why have the past month of voting and crazy runs in the ARIA charts. Is there voting happening right now with the sales? (I imagine yes since the eliminated arent available for purchase) Does anyone get booted next Sunday? This is really smacking of Nine not knowing what to do with a smash hit.
I am glad I didn't get caught up in this show, cause right now I would be super cranky if i was a voter.
Ever since the finalisation of the auditions the shows concept has been a sham and i'm gonna assume even from the very start. All it has become is a popularity competition based on how many units a 'product' can sell, i.e why the judges have chosen the 4 biggest sellers (except for Lakyn & Brittany but more on my thoughts on them later ). As someone stated too me early on in the compatition, surely the judges/mentors would take into consideration who was shifting the most sales? Look at last weeks chart and your TOP 4 are there. As for Lakyn & Brittany they were put to the litmus test and given very 'left-field' song choices in my opinion and have paid the price, but at least they'll forever have TOP 50 singles to their name which is a total farce in itself (again in my opinion).
Your winner? It's between Karise OR Rachael with Darren being the smokey as he has a massive 'fan-base'.
GO TO HELL THE VOICE AND YOUR KARAOKE SHIT Last edited:
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the sales of the Karaoke Shit™ tracks or correlate them with market popularity because most people aren't buying them because they love the songs and want to play them on their iPods every day. They are being bought by the contestants' fans, family and friends and anyone else they can convince to help them win the competition.
I have to agree IF the judges were just going to select the finalist in the end then the rest of the show (particularly the voting) has been TOTALLY pointless.
As I said in another thread the ONLY saving grace for The Voice is that it's drawn attention to a lot of classic gems. The original songs I mean. Last edited:
Just bringing over the discussion from the chartifacts thread to here. Firstly, I have no issue with recordings of the performances being available on iTunes. And if I'm honest, iTune listing them doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is that people voting for a contestant on a television show are affecting the national charts. It's not so much that they like the song, it's that they are wanting their favourite contestant to win.
I am also concerned that X Factor is going to copy The Voice and have their artists go into the recording studio, release their performance and allow them to chart on itunes and the ARIA chart. It is a very slippery slope that The Voice has started. From my understanding you could buy The X factor performances last year, but they were live, weren't allowed to appear on the iTunes chart OR the ARIA chart.
American Idol has been doing it for years, but the songs aren't permitted to chart (from the show's request) until after the airing of the finale. Personally I think this is smart as it helps maintain the suspense. every week on the Voice i was able to follow the National chart and discover who was safe. Going into the final, I'll be surprised if Karise doesn't win.
From a marketing point of view I understand why it has happened. It's pretty much gloating, advertising and money making. And even though I loved it when Glee songs charted, it still bugged me that they were one week wonders and I understood why detractors didn't like them charting.
I just think allowing the songs to chart while the show is airing makes a mockery out of the whole concept of finding The Voice. Part of the appeal of Idol and X Factor is wondering if you favourite loser would get a contract so you could buy a song, get it into the chart and prove the rest of Australia wrong. Why would I care if Darren never gets a contract when I've got a little EP of his performances that I apparently loved enough to download.
What The Voice has highlighted is that for some reasons Australian TV stations like to convert viewer voting reality shows into major cash cows. Which wouldn't bother me when you notice international versions of the same shows don't seem to be as money driven as ours.
I'm just glad I haven't been caught up in the hype otherwise i woul still be fuming over last week's judges lick the finalist decision.
@bb - I really do agree with you, but maybe final performances wouldn't seen that bad, but the fact that they are recorded from the start is what i agree on with you. Hope X-Factor doesn't follow, and hope there's a better winner.
I haven't been a fan of The Voice (either the US or Australian versions), but I will give it some praise tonight, the original songs from each of the acts have been a nice touch considering the show doesn't show a lot of the act's own personalities instead focusing on the judges.
I like the way that Australia seems to add unique touches to these shows, like the way Idol introduced musical instruments and original songs before any other country.
Will the whole Top 10 on iTunes be The Voice performances by the end of the night?
One last question, why are the tracks called The Voice Performances if they are prerecorded in a studio?
I would have to agree with wlv262, such a great show tonight. Although it is evident we have a winner (see i-tunes Downloads Chart Pt 13 thread), all the performances were quite excellent, and their originals songs were quite touching and nice.

I hope for an upset, but i think it's clear who the winner is. I'm also surprised that The Voice hasn't had many guest appearances, probably Lionel Richie would be one of the first as the other acts are contestants or judges. Do you think this is a good thing or bad?
I think the way the eliminations were done prevented guest appearances. So instead of guest appearances you just got lots of time wasting to fill 2 hours.
Sorry TravD, I didn't think last night was a great show, just better than all the rest. Whereas tonight's show was a fizzer and dull. Where was the spectacle or wow factor for the finale of the "biggest show in Australia". Why let Prinnie and Mahalia sing apart from bringing out Jimmy Barnes to scream, why not let the rest of the finalists sing more than back up to half a song.
I am happy about Karise winning though, but now all of a sudden there is another winner's song that no one knew about, what was the point of the songs last night then?
As mentioned above by wlv262, KARISE EDEN is the winner of The Voice 2012.

So there you have it, Series One is finally over. What are your thoughts now?
In all honesty, I do think the show did go well, despite major negatives which were evident. Series Two is coming soon, what can we expect next time
I was honestly expecting john Farnham to be the surprise act and sing "You're The Voice".
Barnsie was a let down especially as he shouts so much. I didn't like how Prinnie and Mahalia got to sing again and no one else did.
Sarah De Bono I find under rated. Every week I found her entertaining. Her duet with Joel was amazing. I am really surprised she wasn't bigger and that she came in 4th. To me she has star potential.
Karise I fear will be like Casey Donavon. a decent voice but will fade to obscurity once the show is over. I don't find her as amazing as everyone else and don't see star quality in her. Furthermore there is something suss about her. She mentioned she was in a refuge last year and then mentioned all her family were there to support her etc. If You have such a loving family, why you at a refuge? Am I missing something?
I enjoyed the final 4 performance to start the show next best after sarah and Joel's duet.
I will end in saying that these contests are hardly fair especially when one contestant comes from a small town where everyone votes for them because it's advertised to do so in local papers and over local radio stations and the community backs them up over someone who grew up in a large city that doesn't have that community support. I saw this happen with where I live with one Big Brother season and I feel it has somewhat happened here too.
Let's hope by the next season ARIA changes their charting rules so we don't have warped charts where songs don't reach their potential peak position because of those performed songs by contestants. The winner is meant to get a record contract so that whole concept is twisted when most of the contestants have had a top 10 or 20 hit!
I just wrote an e-mail to ARIA stating my disgust that performances were able to chart.
I have no problem that Karise charts with her winning single as a record deal is what she has won but she had a top 2 hit before she won! Oz Idol and XFactor didn't chart the performances by contestants so the same should be the case with The Voice.
I am glad it's over too. Can't wait for the chart to appear normal again.
I would actually encourage those that agree that the performances should not be eligble in the weekly singles chart to shoot through an e-mail stating exactly that at charts.mail@aria.com.au
I doubt it will do much but if they have enough complaints maybe they will look at things differently. After all most people wouldn't give a hoot except for us music and chart lovers.
ARIA has no say in what charts and what doesn't, the record companies do, so e-mailing them would be totally pointless. I'm only glad that the show is over because I don't have to hear the annoying, tired whining from members week in week out, and quite frankly I'd rather an all-Karise top 3 than the dreadful Whistle in the top 3 altogether.
Depending on what this week's chart looks like I might just send an email through. Especially since I;m a subscriber to their chart.
In TV Week this week Karise even admits she has meant her birth mother but it sounds like she was gagged by Nine from admitting it until now.
Oh and the hyperboles have already started, according to The Daily telegraph apparently the average viewing audience for a show was 3.4 million people and the highest episode got 3.7 million viewers. Which according to this table http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Voice_(Australia_season_1)#Ratings I'm not sure how that is possible. Last edited:
I don't understand why Australian stations insist on showing an extremely delayed telecast of a show that is dependent on voting so late. Cause le's be honest if you really love a contestant you can easily google or hope on wikipedia to find out how they went. Be interesting to see if Australians care about the US version
Tonights show should see some rises on next weeks chart.

The is not much happening on the US i-tunes charts with Voice Performance, so who knows what'll happen next season here
Also, (as most of you know) the Voice has been adapted im many versions - The Voice of Holland, The Voice of Albania, The Voice of Finland, The Voice France, The Voice of Germany, The Voice of Ireland, The Voice Israel, The Voice Philippines, The Voice of Poland, The Voice of Vietnam, and The Voice UK: (judges)
The Voice US finished months ago, before ours even started. They got a little bit of iTunes love after the finale, a bunch of songs debuted the week after in the lower part of the charts and then promptly fell out. Despite the love the show generates on TV and in the iTunes purchases, it has yet to really establish an artist like Idol, X Factor or even Popstars did. I mean the UK version, where they clearly love reality TV winners saw their winner limp to a paltry Top 40 placing for a week. Clearly there is a big disconnect between voting for a winner and actually wanting to support them with this concept. And quite possiby it's because performances are available every week which means consumer demand for a studio recording is actually lower by the finale stage to guarantee at least the winner's song has some level of success.
