DISCUSSION FORUM
Forum - General: General Discussion - Notice anything in these lyrics & videos?

A few things. To begin, many of you have probably heard of the 2006 Aussie classic "Wake Up" by The Living End but how many of you have taken a careful look at the lyrics? Do you have any ideas what message they might have been trying to tell you? In particular, the four verses below (watching the music video is also recommended):

I've been buried in the sand
I've come down with no place to land
I don't need you to understand
It's not what I had planned

All the hunger, all the yearning
With the lifeline that you're burning
Poison lessons that you're learning
The road ahead is turning

Suicidal education
It got sold to our generation
Wake up to the manipulation
Wake up to the situation

I need something to numb the pain
Forget me and forget my name
Waiting for the time to arrive
No one gets out of here alive

Here’s another song from the late 1970s or early 1980s “Another Brick In The Wall Part 2” by Pink Floyd. Check out these lyrics (music video also recommended) :

We don't need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

"Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"
Two questions for people to chew on:

1.How do you know that what you are told by “educators” , the mainstream media or even the government is more than a half-truth if not an outright lie?
2.Do you think for yourself, or do you follow the system that society expects you to like a sheep?

I’m not telling anyone to do anything or what opinion I think they should have. Just giving people two questions that they can chew on.
Great songs lyrics to analyse and annotate in an English class
These lyrics do have some real meaning and intention in their contexts as compared to the 'getting drunk have sex and party' type lyrics.

Here's another good song & video: Gary Jules (originally by Tears For Fears) - Mad World

One of the best lyrical songs and it also follows the pattern of the previous two :

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very

Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Again, the same thing. People are born, go to school then go to work, retire and eventually die. And there whole life, following the system the government has set up. Most people are sheep, they have it drilled into thier heads at a very young age that they should follow the "propaganda" way of living, live under the government. And in this "mad world" anything you achieve means less and less as each year passes, people in general are sadder and less civil than ever, which each passing year that people let the government run things. And the credibility of anything you do is squandered because the government lies to the public all the time, and is therefore why we live in a world of mistrust and never-ending conflict. We go to school to learn to just obey the system that the government has in place. And under the system, the majority will only achieve as much as the government will allow...because people follow the government's system of life.
It's sort of like 'Uprising' by Muse.
Lily Allen's The Fear
I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don't care about clever I don't care about funny
I want loads of clothes and f*loads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them

And I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
'Cuz everyone knows that's how you get famous
I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror
I'm on the right track, yeah I'm on to a winner

I don't know what's right and what's real anymore
And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore
And when do you think it will all become clear?
'Cuz I'm being taken over by the Fear

Life's about film stars and less about mothers
It's all about fast cars and cussing each other
But it doesn't matter cause I'm packing plastic
And that's what makes my life so f*ing fantastic

And I am a weapon of massive consumption
And its not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function
I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror
I'm on the right track, yeah we're on to a winner

I don't know what's right and what's real anymore
And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore
And when do you think it will all become clear?
'Cuz I'm being taken over by the Fear

Forget about guns and forget ammunition
'Cuz I'm killing them all on my own little mission
Now I'm not a saint but I'm not a sinner
Now everything is cool as long as I'm getting thinner

I don't know what's right and what's real anymore
And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore
And when do you think it will all become clear?
'Cuz I'm being taken over by the Fear

I never paid much attention to the lyrics until recently. I talks about our Marxist and material world, and this fear to be ourselves, but instead to follow the crowd to fit not.
