The winner of the first Australian edition of The Voice was crowned on Monday night (18th June, 2012), and the winner Karise Eden not only debuts at No.1 with her version of the song “Stay With Me Baby” (only previous version to chart in Australia was The Walker Brothers in 1967 version HP-45), she also lands two more debuts within the Top 10, and has a total of eight songs within the Top 40. It’s also the first cover song to hit No.1 since November 2006 when U2 and Green Day went to the top with “The Saints are Coming”.
“Stay with Me Baby” is the 992nd No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2012) and the 426th for ARIA (1983 to 2012), plus as the song debuts at the top it becomes the 96th No.1 debut in Australia. Karise is also the fourth Australian to top the ARIA charts this decade (Guy Sebastian, Gotye and Reece Mastin were the others), and the first female act this decade, with the last local-lass to top our charts being Vanessa Amorosi back in October of 2009 with “This is Who I Am”. Miss Eden also becomes the 95th Australian performer to make it to No.1, and the song is 148th Australian performed song to hit No.1 locally (1940 to 2012).
The song “Stay With Me Baby” is released by Universal Australia, via their Mercury label, so this song becomes the first Mercury label track to hit No.1 this century, the last being Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” (May 1998), and it’s the 33rd No.1 in Australia for the label since first topping the charts here in April 1947 with Eddy Howard’s rendition of “To Each His Own”. And for the words within the song, ‘Baby’ is now making it’s 14th appearance at No.1, but it’s the first ‘Stay’ at the top, the previous closest being “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees (1978) and then the N-Trance version (1995).
Now all of the above might normally be a feat on its own, but Karise also sets a couple of more NEW records. Her rendition of “Hallelujah” stays at its No.2 debut position from last week, and then she debuts at No.3 and No.5 with two more original songs entitled “I Was Your Girl” and “You Won’t Let Me” respectively. So two records here: four of the Top 5 songs are all by one artist, something which hasn’t happened for ARIA, and the last time one act occupied so many top spots was back in April 1964 when The Beatles held the top six positions with 1: Roll Over Beethoven 2: All My Loving 3: I Saw Her Standing There 4: She Loves You 5: Twist and Shout 6: I Want to Hold Your Hand. The second record is something which NO ONE has achieved before, three debuts in the one week within the Top 5. (The Glee gang had previously debuted with multiple songs, but never this high). Other acts to have previously held the top two spots include Abba (3-Nov-75 for one week), Madonna (from 22-July-85 for three weeks), then we had two “Macarena” versions charting alongside one another in September 1996 for three weeks. The last act to do so was The Black Eyed Peas in late June of 2009.
As I mentioned above, Karise is also charting with her older tracks, all of which rise back up this week. “Nothing’s Real but Love” (HP-9) is back up forty-three places to No.11, “Landslide” (HP-14) jumps back up twenty-seven spots to No.15. Her first chart entry “It’s a Man’s Man’s World” (HP-41) zooms back up forty-six places to a new peak of No.21 (also a new peak for the song as the James Brown 1966 version hit No.39 and the Renee Geyer 1975 rendition hit No.44). And lastly her rendition of the Amy Winehouse song “Back to Black” (former peak #67) jumps back up fifty places to a new peak of No.36.
Two more Voice contestants score Top 10 debuts this week, with Sarah De Bono debuting at No.4 with her original song entitled “Beautiful”, and Darren Percival coming in at No.8 with his song “Damage Down”, and more on their multiple entries later on.
The rest of the decimated Top 10 from last week consists of four more tracks, with the seven week running No.1 song “Whistle” for Flo Rida dropping down to No.6 this week, followed at No.7 by Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa with “Payphone” at No.7. Chris Brown spends his fourth week in the Top 10 and Top 100 with “Don’t Wake Me Up” at No.9, down three places, and dropping six spots to No.10 is Carly Rae Jepsen with “Call Me Maybe”.
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Will.i.Am and Eva Simons jumps up four places to a new peak of No.18 with “This is Love”, whilst Jason DeRulo is up seven places to No.30 with his new track “Undefeated”. Climbing into the Top 50 from its debut last week at No.55, up to No.42 this week is Rudimental feat John Newman and the former UK No.1 single “Feel the Love”.
THE VOICE (Finals): Judges: Delta Goodrem takes a big tumble this week (but then most things do fall this week), as “Sitting on Top of the World” falls twelve places to No.26. Seal is down ten places to No.73 with “Kiss from a Rose”, and thanks to his duet with his contestant Darren Percival, the Keith Urban 2011 song “Without You” scores its first Australian chart entry by debuting at No.39 this week. Top 3 Contestants: Darren Percival came second in The Voice competition, and he currently has seven tracks on the charts. His No.8 debut I mentioned above is followed by another new entry at No.17, “For Once in My Life” (Stevie Wonder, HP-24, 1968), then “I Believe” (HP-6) is at No.37 down from No.21, “A Song for You” (HP-36) is at No.52, “Wherever I Lay My Hat” (HP-12) is back up twenty-four places to No.56, he re-enters at No.79 with “Shower the People” (HP-64) and scores a third debut of the week at No.100 with his version of the John Lennon song “Jealous Guy”. Rachael Leachar came in third place, and is represented by four songs this week, her original song “Shooting Star” and her cover of the Charlie Chaplin penned song “Smile” debut at No.31 and No.34 respectively, whilst she is at No.64 with “Night in White Satin” and returns to the Top 100 with her first entry “La Vie en Rose” (HP-18) at No.89. Sarah De Bono has five songs throughout the chart this week, with her No.4 debut of “Beautiful”, she is next up at No.43 with last weeks debut “Here’s Where I Stand” (HP-30), then she debuts at No.50 with “If I Didn’t Love You” (Tina Arena HP-41, Nov 1997). Her version of Whitney’s “How Will I Know” (HP-24) comes in at No.66 and her rendition of the Beyonce song “Listen” rise's back up twenty-four places to No.70.
On Sunday night, the TV Reality show ‘Dancing with the Stars’ ended it’s 2012 season by crowning former X-Factor contestant Johnny Ruffo as the winner of the dancing competition, and just in time for his first single “On Top” to debut in the charts at No.28. Two more non-Voice related titles debut within the Top 50 this week, with fun. coming in at No.46 with their second Top 50 chart entry “Some Nights”, followed closely at No.48 by the return of Matchbox 20 and their first new single in four-and-a-half years entitled “She’s So Mean”. Their last chart appearance was the January 2008 track “All Your Reasons” (HP-34) taken off their best-of collection “Exile on Mainstream”. This new track is from their forthcoming fourth album “North” (no date yet).
Lower 50: The only new peaking track in the lower fifty is at No.95, up two places from last week debut, Knife Party’s “Rage Valley” EP. Returning though are Ian Carey at No.62 with “Amnesia”, and “It Will Rain” for Bruno Mars (done as a duet by Seal & Karise on The Voice). “Party Rock Anthem” for LMFAO is being used in the promo ads for ‘Big Brother’, which helps the longest running No.1 this decade (10 weeks) to climb back up thirteen places to No.83.
UK group Marina & The Diamonds enter at No.81 with “Primadonna”, their first singles chart entry. The duo of DJ’s Diplo and Switch make up the group Major Lazer who debut at No.82 with their first chart entry here entitled “Get Free” featuring Amber Coffman on vocals, Belgium is the only other country so far to chart this song where it’s sitting at No.13 (HP-12).
Emeli Sande scores her third chart entry as “My Kind of Love” debuts at No.84, followed at No.85 by US singer Meiko and her first entry to the ARIA charts entitled “Stuck on You”, the song being used in the promo’s for the returning second season of the TV series ‘Winners & Losers’. Justin Bieber debuts again this week, coming in at No.91 with “Beauty and a Beat” featuring Nicki Minaj as guest vocalist in at No.91, and the new UK No.1 single “Call My Name” for Cheryl (Cole) debuts here at No.92.
Justin Bieber’s third album becomes his second No.1 album here in Australia, as “Believe” debuts at No.1 this week, also becoming the 309th No.1 debut and the fifth consecutive top-spot debut.
Now that Justin has scored his second ARIA No.1 album he joins Bryan Adams (2) and Michael Buble (4) as the only three Canadian solo male singers to have No.1 albums here, all of which have now had multiple chart-topping albums. Plus it’s the 23rd No.1 album by a Canadian artist, the previous being Michael Buble in December last year with his “Christmas” album. Justin’s “My Worlds” album hit No.1 twice at the start and end of May 2010.
“Believe” for Justin becomes the 648th No.1 album in Australia (1965 to 2012) and the 507th for ARIA (1983 to 2012), plus as Justin is now on the Island label in Australia (first album was through Def Jam), “Believe” becomes the 17th No.1 album here for that label with “Ceremonials” for Florence + the Machine being the last (Nov 2011). It’s also the second album with the word ‘Believe’ in it’s title to hit No.1, the last being the Bring Me the Horizon album from Oct 2010 “There is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen it…”.
Keith Urban’s “The Story So Far” (HP-1) returns to No.2 for a third time, up two places from last week, and no doubt helped by his appearances and performances on The Voice. Last week’s No.1 “The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle” for Missy Higgins drops two places to No.3, but blasting into the Top 5, up twenty-nine places from last week to No.4 this week is the “Rock of Ages” soundtrack. It’s the first soundtrack to hit the Top 10 this year, the last being the “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” album from November of 2011.
“Up All Night” for One Direction, “+” by Ed Sheeran and “21” for Adele all hold still at No.5, No.6 and No.8 respectively, whilst last weeks debut at No.3 of Usher’s “Looking 4 Myself” drops down four places to No.7 this week. “El Camino” for The Black Keys drops two spots to No.9, and returning to the Top 10 at No.10 is Seal with his “Hits” collection. But unfortunately, Xavier Rudd’s “Spirit Bird” tumbles from it’s No.2 debut down to No.11 this week.
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: “The Voice: The Final 24” album jumps up eight places to a new peak of No.13 this week. And thanks to his duet with son-in-law Joel Madden on The Voice, Lionel Richie returns to the Top 100 at No.20 with his “Tuskegee” duets album, and with his “The Definitive Collection” at No.51. And The Voice judge Keith Urban also has two returnees to the Top 100, with his “Get Closer” (HP-11, peaked Nov 2010) album back in at No.23 (which features the No.39 single this week “Without You”). Plus his first best of “Greatest Hits: 18 Kids” (HP-7 peaked Dec 20078) returns at No.66. Lady GaGa is blitzing the country with her current national tour, and her second album “Born This Way” this week jumps back up twenty-three places to No.22, whilst her first album, the repackaged “The Fame Monster” returns to the Top 100 at No.67.
Paul Simon’s 1986 album “Graceland” has been re-mastered, re-packaged and returns to the Top 100 this week at No.12. The album originally entered the ARIA charts in mid-September 1986 taking only six weeks to climb to No.1 (thanks to the great first single from the album “You Can Call Me Al”), and staying atop for three weeks during late October and early November, returning to No.1 in the first two weeks of April 1987 giving the album five weeks at No.1. This was Paul Simon’s biggest solo album, and his first and only solo No.1 album in Australia. He had last been at No.1 in Australia in September 1970 when he was a part of Simon & Garfunkel on their album “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (three runs at No.1 for a total of 16 weeks from April 1970). “Graceland” spent fifty-six weeks on the ARIA chart initially, with forty-two unbroken weeks inside the Top 10 (early Oct 86 to the last week of July 1987), and the album has returned once before to the ARIA chart. Back in February 1992 “Graceland” spent a further eight weeks in the charts reaching No.36.
Canadian new wave rock band Metric score their second ARIA Albums Chart entry this week with their fifth album entitled “Synthetica”, which comes in at No.21. Their 2009 fourth album “Fantasies” was their first to chart here, reaching No.48 in April of that year. Whilst the final Top 50 debut of the week is from Tedeschi Trucks Band with their second album entitled “Everybody’s Talkin’” which debuts at No.49 this week.
Lower 50: Boy & Bear’s “Moonfire” album jumps back up fourteen places to No.52. Fun. are touring here from late July, and their album “Some Nights” returns to the Top 100 at No.64, helped also by the title track debuting at No.46, whilst also returning to the Top 100 are Jay-Z and Kanye West with “Watch the Throne” at No.93.
Glen Hansard enters at No.77 with his solo debut album “Rhythm and Respose”. He is the former lead singer for the Irish group The Frames, and one half of the duo The Swell Season, and is also known for his acting in the films ‘The Commitments’ and ‘Once’.
The fifth album for the group Motion City Soundtrack is entitled “Go” and it debuts at No.84. Their third and fourth albums have previously charted here; 2007’s “Even if it Kills Me” (HP-52) and 2010’s “My Dinosaur Life” (HP-50).

Oh wow, with the conclusion of The Voice all Voice related performances are eligible for my reality chart. Pretty sure for the first time in the chart history there will be more than 50 entries, next week. Mind boggling.
This chart will be a glitch on the chart runs of many songs...
I am in two minds about it though: I don't agree with the infiltration, although technically it is a true representation of what has been sold this week, but the purpose behind the purchases isn't necessarily on musical merit (an argument that can be used on many tracks *cough* Ass Back Home *cough*).
I would also prefer to not have Whistle at number one. It has overstayed its welcome on top... Last edited:
I think my big issue with this week's chart is going to be all the glitches in the songs that are going to have natural chart runs. It will be an intersting anamoly for many songs to drop down so far and then bounce back up.
Out of curiosity what's the shortest ever chart run for a #1 song. Cause I have a feeling the Karise might just get that record if she manages to land at #1 with something other that the official winner's song.
Actually, let me correct that, The Saints Are Coming & Everytime are both on 8 weeks, I forgot to look at the 2007 charts as well as 2006 when I was looking at its run lol.
I'm totally a hypocrite somewhere, but out of all the generic dance pop songs, I think this is my favourite. It should at least do better than Timomatic
Aside from Karise, the only contestant to have every one of her singles charting. Shame this single couldn't do as well as the others. Lol Qwote and Christina Perri.
What's dissapointing about this countdown is that the songs are remakes with no alteration to the original. They will short chart runs. Other concerns; If Karise Eden is #01 will that song have a video? Looking at the iTunes chart all the songs have dropped will this be either the biggest or second biggest drop from #01 EVER? With Flo Rida #01 on iTunes will he return to #01 if so from where? #05 is the lowest chart position anyone has climbed back to #01 since they have already stopped there. There's a massive possibility that a physical single will have Karise at #01 this means karise will replace herself at #01. Will it be the shortest #01 chart run ever? Songs have been denied peak positions or even charting because of the mess also. Duplicate entries what if karise has 50% of the top ten it's on par with The Beatles this is not a true representation of what's occured. Also sales with duplicate chart entries the amassed sale will satisfy the record company causing more releases to strike whilst the iron is hot.
** Had only three days of sales, and physical was released on Thursday, plus she is performing on A Current Affair on Monday night, plus she has dates in every city around the country during the next two weeks, so expect this to climb next week. (IMO).

Also, a couple million people watched The Voice, which prompted a small minority of them to spend money on music, which may introduce them to do the same thing for other music. I don't have a huge problem with The Voice songs or them charting. They actually charted a lot higher than I thought they would. I was expecting a "Glee type" chart run - ie: mostly lower 50 entries. A few of them were actually good cover versions. Sure it's totally manipulate the chart overall over the last few months, but there's been examples of that over the years anyway. And as I said at least it's introduced a whole heap of forgotten "classics" (in the original versions) to a whole new audience who probably did even know most them existed.
The chart will get back to normal next week with Whistle probably back at number one. Truth be told that's a pretty ordinary song and it's been #1 for 7 weeks. Last edited:
Yep, that's what annoys me the most with Whistle's run. The fact that such an ordinary song has spent so much time at the top.
There are some long running singles at the top I didn't like at all in the past but I could get why they were popular. In Flo Rida's case, I really fail to see what can be so appealing in such an ordinary song.
That's why I can't help thinking that the big discount on iTunes plays a big part in the song's success. Sure, it's popular but perhaps it wouldn't have spent so many weeks on top if it had been available at a normal price. Last edited:
There is a chance in a few years time I might look back on this week's chart and not think it, but all I can think is what a ridiculous looking chart we have this week. I could deal with it if I knew all those debuts planned on sticking around but as it stands it is going to be an anomlay and probably an annual anomlay for as long as The Voice survives.
Do I think it is the worst chart ever? Probably not, there was a period of time where there was little for me to enjoy in the ARIA chart in the 00s and at least this one has some enjoyable tunes (including some of the Voice performances - mainly the original songs).
I think my main issue with the overload of the Voice performances in the chart is many of them are a result of people wanting to support their favourite as opposed to enjoying the song. I liken it to a fan base going nuts and buying all the tracks of a new album indivually cuasing them all to chart. It just doesn't sit well with me. There is nothing I can do about but just sit and wait for a couple more weeks until only the 'legit' Voice songs are left in the chart.
Definitely not the worst chart we've had but possibly the most ridiculous one.
And for the record I do think it is crazy that The Beatles held down the top 6 spots on the chart. At least The Voice can't claim that record.

I'm joining the crew calling this the worst chart ever. And I haven't even heard any of the Voice shite except for the actual single. Why it's the worst chart ever is because it's filled with things that are not singles. Last I checked, it was the ARIA Top 50 Singles chart, not the Songs chart. I personally want a singles chart, not a songs chart. Sure it's a true representation of what's selling, but that doesn't nake them singles.
At least it looks like the actual single is going to miss #1, which is highly amusing to me. Go Whistle!!!11!!1!1!
I wonder if the performances weren't eligable to chart in the weekly chart if Karise's debut song would have been a hit much like the Idol and Popstar winners and more recently Reece Mastin.
At this rate, it's charted rather poorly with a #5 debut. Looks like it might rise or perhaps stay steady on nexts week chart but I don't vision it sticking around all that long. It should start falling in the next week.
And to think all the promoting she is doing can't help it get to #1 on Itunes. Has she got a physical release?

I am hoping her album will fall short! I guess I am rooting for Bieber to take the top spot or hopefully Linkin Park can pull through with the victory!
The physical was released Thursday apparently, not sure why they didn't delay it until Friday to increase the sales for the period. I hven't been to my local shop to see if its sitting there and not sure how much impact the physical will, haveone from a capital city able to shed light on the sales of the physical?
savagegrant - We all know your views on The Voice (ie: Karaoke Shit™) and most I think agree (personally it doesn't faze me that much).
However like it or not ARIA let those songs chart so technically speaking if you don't include them on your site then it will not be accurate. It will be "Every ARIA Top 100 Single in 2012 EXCEPT songs from The Voice". What if XFactor or Australia's Got Talent or even god-forbid Big Brother latches on to this idea of releasing songs are you going to not include anything that falls into this category?. It's worked with one show and as we all know TV networks are very quick to repeat something that has proven to work so well.
I feel that if you start leaving songs out that you don't like then it becomes a very slippery slope and it's probably better to just include ALL the ARIA charting songs (just like you have for every year since 1970). It's your site, your rules of course but I just wanted to state my humble little opinion.

There's nothing on the pic which proves that she's bought her own single. Perhaps she was just glad to see it in a music shop, which is quite understandable for an act who releases her first record.
And if she buys her own single, it doesn't mean that it's not doing well. I remember a guy on another forum saying that Gabriella Cilmi bought Sweet About Me when it was #1.
It will be a battle between Karise and Linkin Park for the #1 album.

I'm still upset about what happened on the weekend with the charts so I was hoping to not debate this now (if ever, really). There's an explanation on my site about my decision. The ban will remain as long as my anger is stronger than my desire to offer a complete list.
The main aim of my site was always to promote music and I just can't promote music that has such a devastating effect on our charts. So if/when The Voice returns to my lists it will probably be without audio. One thing is for certain though. I will not be spending over $70 on Voice performances next season. I pray that it loses popularity or they stop doing what they are doing to the charts or ARIA change the rules. I sure as shit hope that no other shows start abusing the situation too.
By the way, how nice and clean does my 2012 ARIA list look without the Karaoke Shit™ anyway? heh
Fair enough savagegrant as I said it's your site, so your rules. I find your site quite an informative one that I visit often. It's also very well laid out, so nice job all round.
I just wanted to give you something to keep in mind. I suspect you'll have this issue not only with The Voice next season, but possibly other shows as well.
While on that point I'm wondering why you've then included the Glee songs?. What if anything makes them any different?. They're both essentially "Karaoke" type covers and we've had over 100 of them chart over the past 3 years. You see this is the problem you'll have if you don't include certain songs, where is that line?.
I can remove the Glee songs too if you like? Haha. Just kidding.
At the moment the line is drawn with The Voice. I wasn't too happy about the Glee chart invasion when it started but it seems to have died down and they only ever managed to achieve 2 top 10 singles, so they weren't raping the business end of the charts very much. Also, their releases were spread out over 3 years, not 10 weeks like The Voice so they weren't anywhere near as disruptive to the charts.
Also note that the people who were buying Glee songs were actually playing them because they liked the song, not just voting for their favourite contestant like with The Voice. I actually like some of the Glee songs. 8 of them made my EOY lists. Sometimes their songs are interesting and musically different to the original. The Voice performances were all watered-down productions. Those downloads were just a quick money grab.
