G'day, Rolling Stone mag has updated their top 500 albums of all time...
The Rolling Stone 500 was assembled by the editors of "Rolling Stone" based on the result of two extensive polls. In 2003 "Rolling Stone" asked a panel of 271 artists, producers, industry executives and journalists to pick the greatest albums of all time (this produced their first greatest albums of all time list). In 2009, they asked a similar group of 100 experts to pick the best albums of the 2000's. From those results, "Rolling Stone" created this new list of the greatest albums of all time.

Okay, I usually accept that music is opinionated, but when you have corporate fatcats relentlessly push their views as propaganda, I hold the lists to high expectations.
The only great songs from She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper, the debut Lynyrd Skynyrd album and Vitalogy by Pearl Jam are Time After Time, Free Bird and Betterman and yet that still makes those albums more mentionable than pretty much everything else there with a few exceptions and with only ONE song each...oh dear
I'll let the listmaker off on these albums:
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head Def Leppard - Hysteria In Utero - Nirvana (studio album) 1993 Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers (studio album) 1999
But 4 out of 100? That's a very low score Rolling Stone Magazine. Consider seeking therapy. Last edited:
My favourite album from these so far is, weirdly enough, #401. I would choose #423, but it seems unfair that a compilation album of what is essentially the Greatest Hits of the Supremes can be considered alongside studio albums. Very happy to see #451 (although I wish this was higher) and #463.

Of course, you need more than just one song for an ALBUM to be great. Here are the green lights for this part of the list:
392 - Let It Be - The Beatles (studio album) 1970 378 - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis (studio album) 1995 341 - Play - Moby (studio album) 1999 335 - Superunknown - Soundgarden (studio album) 1994 331 - Help! - The Beatles (studio album) 1965 320 - Amnesiac - Radiohead (studio album) 2001
So....6/100.....10/200 Not looking very promising Rolling Stone are we? Last edited:
Ben1981 I would argue that 379 and 343 are not one great song album. Especially Bat Out Of Hell. It's almost like a Meat Loaf's Greatest Hits on its own
@BillyBrett You're entitled to an opinion, so I'll let you have it your way. But while the song "Bat Out Of Hell" is one of the best from the 1970s, I just don't see the appeal of the other tracks.
G'day, @Ben1981...yes charts like these come down too personal opinion...but i seriously question how many of these albums you've listen too in thier entirety with some of your comments (opinions) on what deserves to be on the list and doesn't.
I own easily about 80% of what has been posted already and they definetly deserve too be ranked in the top 500....and that steams from my personal and professional opinion.
@BillyBrett i agree completely with you on Meat Loaf's album along with 16 million other owners of the album mate

Blige (studio album) 1994
@album guru joe Yes, I have listened to tracks of many of these albums. I checked out Bat Out Of Hell and the track of the same name is excellent. I never said that the other tracks were horrible, just that they are not LISTWORTHY!
I could easily think of artists that the listmakers have left out that probably should have mention. Such as:
Noah And The Whale - the 2011 Last Night On Earth album was mindblowing. And before you say I'm biased, I basically listened to that album expecting disappointment and the complete opposite happened - in fact, it was far more than my best expectations could have been. I would put that album at the in the top five albums ever created - easily.
270 - Some Girls - The Rolling Stones (studio album) 1978 269 - Psychocandy - The Jesus And The Mary Chain (studio album) 1985 268 - Paul Simon - Paul Simon (studio album) 1972 267 - Quadrophenia - The Who (studio album) 1973 266 - Child Is Father Of The Man - Blood, Sweat & Tears (studio album) 1968 265 - The Genius Of Ray Charles - Ray Charles (studio album) 1959 264 - Workingman's Dead - Grateful Dead (studio album) 1970 263 - Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman (studio album) 1988 262 - Crosby, Stills & Nash - Crosby, Stills & Nash (studio album) 1969 261 - American Beauty - Grateful Dead (studio album) 1970
@album guru joe Maybe not every half inch from the first second to the last second of vinyl of these albums but enough for me to honestly believe I can pass judgement on what's going on. Not to mention, I know a lot of the background history of many of these albums.
@Ben1981...sorry i disagree with you; you can't pass judgement on something if you haven't got the full deal...i also have a wealth of knowledge on the history of contempary music (1940-now), i teach it at Melbourne University...
Of course it's an OPINION and I have no problem with an OPINION what I will PASS JUDGEMENT on is CORPORATE FATCATS like ROLLING STONE magazine trying to push their OPINION into PROPAGANDA! That's what my system is all about. I will say though that the inclusion of:
259 - The Velvet Rope - Janet Jackson (studio album) 1997
is nice and that

Not a bad list by any means...i personally agree with 75-80% of the entries. Thier's alot of absolute "Classic" albums that feature on the list...but a few highly debatable one's also.
I'd have alot of albums in different placings; but that's the thing with these lists it's always going to be up for debate...
Anyways i hope everyone enjoys the list for what it's worth, it's not the be all and end all of album lists....just another one of many....
Check my thread "album guru joe's essential albums" too get an idea of what i think are the best albums are over the past 72 years Last edited:

The one's with are amoung my favourites, the rest are either I know, and/or I like.
I'm really happy that so many Bruce Springsteen albums have been included I love Born To Run, Nebraska and The River so I'm happy that they're all up high. Also I'm glad that Born In The U.S.A. made the top 100 seeing as though it seems to be the one BS album that gets a lot of flack for being so popular! It's a shame there was no space for 21
Okay, here's a "professional" look at this. Thriller by Michael Jackson is notable as the best-selling album of all time, with an estimation of at least 15 million more copies than The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd which would be second in that regard. If you look at cultural impact, both of those albums have much more to legacy than 19, 18, 16, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 7, 6, 5, 2 to say the least.
I also question if Sgt Pepper made it to number one solely on cover art alone because that is perhaps how most people know the album - not for it's tracks, although Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and When I'm Sixty Four have held up somewhat of a legacy over the year's but not to the extent of hits such as Let It Be for example.
So if this is just an opinionated list, they need to make such a disclaimer that they are corporate fatcats trying to push propaganda as a publicity stunt. If it is a serious attempt at an "official" list, it is laughable - and not laughable in a good way. Last edited:
Interesting list. The highest I have is The White Album, followed by Abbey Road, and then of course Nevermind. Great to see Ten and Elephant both get mentions.
"Sgt.pepper" making no.#1 purely on album cover disign is "laughable"...
When this album was relaeased on the 1st June 1967 it completed took the world by storm on so many levels....
It presented a whole new Beatles too the world...not the mop tops everyone had come too enjoy but mustached hippie trippy looking guys that where moving with the new psychedelic times...
The consumers of the day where completely blown away by this new release...the result was the album topping the charts in over 30 countries around the world and reaching that point within the first week off release...record breaking in many countries of the time...
The musical influence is astounting...Jimi Hendrix covered the title song the day after it's release at a gig in America after repeated listenings, Brian Wilson went mental he didn't complete the then most famous unreleased album of all time "SMiLE" before "Pepper"...John Sebastion of the Lovin' Spoonful stated "we might as well quite while where ahead"....David Crosby stated "that's it The Beatles have found the new sound"....The Rolling Stones released a press statement "we might retire"....
The musical aspects are amazing....the record was recorded on a four track system...the amount of depth and instumentation captured is utterly amazing (producer George Martin played a key part of this)...the amount of new instruments indroduced to "pop/rock" is incredible...the only other album of the time that rivals this is The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" released a year earlier...and has been stated by Paul McCartney as the greatest influence on the band making "Pepper"....
The most outstanding track on the album by head and shoulders is "A Day In The Life"....one of the most sublime tracks ever recording in the history of contempary music...
And all remastered editons (1987 & 2010) of the album have re-charted upon release in many countries (top 3 in the US). This is an album that has effected so many people on so many different levels over nearly 50 years it's crazy....
Personally i don't think it's no.#1 (no.#4 on my list) but i can see why "Rolling Stone" magazine made it thier number one....
