Good Morning! Well today is the 25-07-2012, it's time to reveal Artist Showdown! [Series Three] Twists...
BOXING ROUNDS Listed 13-07-2012 in this thread is the top selling singles for positions #03, #13, #23, #33, #43, #53, #63, #73, #83, & #93. This is for the years 1983, 1993 & 2003. The selection of year is known but not the order of the song. Beginning in Round Two the eliminated mentor from Round One will select a Box at random to represent them in the boxing round. The eliminated mentor in Round Two will also select a box at random. Active mentors & extra members from Australian-Charts will vote as to which selection they prefer. The highest score will continue into the next boxing round. This will continue until mid-way through Artist Showdown! [Series Three]. The mentor left standing will re-enter the showdown. The catch... They will re-enter with their non-preferred artist for the remainder of the showdown.
NON-PREFERRED ARTIST Each mentor has two artists representing them. Before this series begins on 01-08-2012 they will have to select their non-preferred artist. This artist will represent them if they should return from the boxing rounds. This decision is only known by the mentor.
SWITCH During the showdown there will be a switch of a preferred artist. This power will be allocated to the most popular song selection in that particular round. Only the mentor's know their preferred artist so an incorrect selection could be unfavourable. This will only occur once in the series.
BLACKOUT The mentor / artist that came in second last can select a blackout. This means they can choose any artist that cannot be utilised in the following round. This is to aid them.
SAFETY There will be one safety available in this series. This can be played anytime before the final 5. The catch... you have to be the 5th most popular in this round to obtain the safety.
COMBINED VOTE There will be a particular round where no elimination will occur the votes recieved will carry over to the next round where they will be combined with that round. The eliminated artist / mentor will have the most points over the two rounds.
ARTIST SELECTION In this series you were given two artists. If you should make the final two you will need to play two songs from each artist with the most popular song throughout the series also added to the mix. This means it will be 5 vs. 5 in the final. You cannot play an artist more than twice consecutive. Example: Round One: A. Round Two: A. Round Three: B. Round Four: A.

These are excellent! I love the Blackout, Safety and the idea of a non-preferred artist. Probablly my least favourite 'feature' is the Boxing Rounds, but then again those years are some of my least favourite.
Some Clarification; You select a non-preferred artist only once. It is only is utlised if you the mentor who re-enters through the boxing rounds. The opposite artist the (preferred) you may lose if your selected in the switch round. You only submit one song per round from one artist.

SAFETY In Round Four there was a tie for fifth place, this meant that two safety's were given. A safety can be used at anytime by the mentor prior to the closure of votes for a round, keeping the mentor and their artists safe. If a mentor is eliminated without using their safety the safety will be provided to the mentor who comes fifth in the following round. This means that both safety's will be utilised at some point throughout Series Three. It is important to know that the safety's cannot be utilised in the final five. So if there are six mentors remaining and both safety's have not be utilised it will be an automatic process keeping the current holder safe. If there is no holder of the safety at the final stages it is provided once again to the person in fifth position. A mentor can give their safety to any other mentor at anytime before the closure of that current round. The identity of the safety holders is secret. If the mentor reveals they are the holder the safety is forfeited.
I'm bitterly disappointed to be out so early. I really thought that I had a genuine chance of winning with the artists that I'd chosen. But I guess when one of them hasn't had a hit in 20 years and the other in 25 years then an extensive catalogue of hits means little if the voters are almost all from Generation Y.
Oh well. It was fun playing and coming up with a detailed plan which I'd like to share in table form (below). Thanks for running another enjoyable series of your game Naters and good luck to the remaining mentors. By the way, if I'd won I would have asked Nate if he could donate the money to Lifeline WA.

There are only three years for a mentor to select. It is their choice. 1983, 1993 & 2003. The songs from 1983, 1993 & 2003 are taken from the end of year charts. Just to claify my thinking. And using examples of already eliminated acts.
If as ACDC I topped the round, I have the option of swapping one act for another act. So I could choose the combo of Tina Turner and Cher. So I would end up with Cher. And do I choose between ACDC and Guns N Roses for who I ditch, or do i default to my non preferred artist which would be the Gunners.

Well, after Round 4, I was very surprised to see Taylor voted out by just 1 point. Then came the Boxing Rounds. Having won 3 boxing rounds in a row, (sorry savage, anton and irish), I was hoping to keep 'boxing' until Round 10 to make a comeback. Oh well, as least now I can actually concentrate on studying

The non-preferred artists have now been revealed. This provides an interesting insight into which mentor's are playing this game. This twist in Artist Showdown! [Series Three] could have been used in different ways. If the mentor was eliminated could their non-preferred artist sail them across the finish line? If the mentor was to place their stronger artist as the non-preferred this would save them if they were to be poached during the switch round.
Round Nine saw a mentor with a safety in their possession eliminated! This safety has now been passed to another mentor, strengthening their chances of winning. The final boxing round is coming up. Either Billy Joel or Brandy will prevail & re-enter this showdown! Another blackout will be played will a stronger artist be blocked?

Aww that's a shame, I wasn't very familiar with a lot of the Pet Shop Boys songs picked but I did enjoy most of them. People must have seen the opportunity to drop a threat based on how the Savage Garden songs were going
alleyt1989 Series One saw this mentor eliminated in Round One with Janet Jackson. Series Two saw a triumphant return coming runner-up with Whitney Houston. To achieve a personal best alleyt1989 needs to win Series Three & nothing less.
BeansterBarnes This the only mentor remaining in Series Three that had not taken part in either Series One or Series Two. Obviously on a personal best.
BillyBrett This mentor was missing from Series One. However did rather well in Series Two with Céline Dion. Elimination came in Round Six due to a combined vote with a less popular artist. Currently already on a personal best.
crazychris It seemed this mentor could possibly of won Series One with Pink, however they had to settle for third (Round Twelve). Series Two saw this mentor time & time again survive with David Guetta. Elimination came in Round Eight where you had to say why you deserved to be in the showdown. Of course they only just got eliminated yet again...
Daniel09 This mentor is still embarrassed with their Red Hot Chili Peppers performance in Series One. Round Four was way too early for such a successful artist. Series Two he upped the anti to obtain a personal best coming in third place with Elton John. Still foolish considering Can You Feel The Love Tonight would have seen a guarenteed final's placing. Maybe third time lucky?
DaveNT Series One & Series Two this mentor eliminated themselves with Bryan Adams & Phil Collins in Round Two. Why you ask? Well DaveNT NEVER has voted his own artist at #01 throughout all three series. Sitting on a personal best i only hope that if we saw him in the finals he could buck this trend!

There are x3 safety's remaining in this game all of which have to be utilised before the final five. This puts more pressure on the other artist's to survive. There are going to be no more spanners in the works just the mentor and their artist. Song choice is crucial, voting is a must and believe it or not strategy is ever so important. Tough luck for BeansterBarnes (Billy Joel & Prince). After having the opportunity to re-enter in Round Ten you have done very well. The voting switched numerous times throughout Round Thirteen with three different artists occupying the bottom position. Only one point the difference... No Doubt - Sunday Morning was only challenged once throughout the voting for the top position, with that particular artist landing in third overall. savagegrant you did provide the kiss of death to BillyBrett again! The bottom three switched several times once again in Round Fifteen. What tricks do the mentor's have up their sleeve? Daniel09 obviously needs to beat his third place in Series Two. NateBoi has been out in fourth twice can i break this trend? V1AHHHH has nothing to lose. DaveNT is he out of his depth? or will he just outplay the rest.
Oh well, I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did. I predicted being knocked out at around the fifth round. If I survived this round, I would definitely have been knocked out next round. I had ran out of Tina songs that would have helped me guarantee survival. But at least I improved on my last previous placing. I'm happy to have been the last surviving solo artist mentor left. I had a feeling a group mentor was destined to win the game.
And I shall admit I am stoked that I survived every single Blackout that was thrown my bloody way. Even though the majority didn't affect my song choice as from the start I was always gonna alternate between Shannon and Tina and never do a back to back nom. The first two blackouts forced me to do that though.
I cannot believe i have been fourth in all three series. Robbie Williams, Vanessa Amorosi & The Corrs / The Offspring. I didn't think i could win, however i thought i would make the finals. Runaway was going to be my next song selection. Suprised this duo wasn't snapped up sooner. The question is... Who is going to take this thing out?

I am so surprised to have made it as far as I did. It shows the depth of the material for both of the Aussie bands and that it remains popular to many on this site to this day.
Not appearing in the bottom 3 in rounds 1 to 3, I became aware of this depth and continued to sometimes play the slightly lesser known material. My first scare was probably in round 7, the last of the combined round. I suspected D.A.F. had not faired too well in round 6, but chose to test that depth of popularity again in round 7 but was up against some strong songs. The shock poor showing of ‘Money Wrench’ surely saved an exit at that point.
I took another chance in round 9 with ‘Already Gone’ with the benefit of knowing there was a boxing round, but still the result wasn't so bad and showed a strong following was there.
By the final six, the competition gets fierce. On this occasion I didn't go with a more obvious song and it certainly didn't pay off. But it has been fun along the way.
Good luck to the finalists who have both played the game very well. I think we're in for a grandstand finish.
Interesting you say that "D.A.F." and "Already Gone" were your two risky songs as they are my two favourite Powderfinger songs and two of my favourite songs of all time

I sort of expected this result so I'm not surprised at all, but I was hoping for some kind of miracle anyway; nevertheless congratulations V1. Every song you played in the final were very strong for both artists, I think Garbage let me down a little as they're not THAT popular and only have two big hits (and if I knew how popular Only Happy When It Rains was I would have saved it for the final!). But I really enjoyed playing this series because I've become a lot more familiar with Garbage's music and it's really great, and I was already a massive fan of No Doubt so I was happy that they did so well throughout the game. No Doubt placing 1st several times was very surprising - I took a massive risk by playing New in the first round which I half-expected to be eliminated, same with #1 Crush in Round 10 so I really got lucky at times. Very fun game, well done Nate
I honestly find that most of this is luck with just a little bit of strategy behind it. If anyone wants to learn how to win at this game.... I shall run workshops!
I'm actually not sure if I'll go again on series 4, it'll depend on what artists are on offer. I think it's unfair of me to keep Hijinx, alley1989 and now Daniel09 from a victory. I'm ready to relinquish the throne!
