Justice Crew become the first Australian group to hit No.1 in over five years, as their fourth single “Boom Boom” climbs to No.1 this week and lands a Platinum sales certification too.
“Boom Boom” is now the 996th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2012) and the 430th for ARIA (1983 to 2012), plus Justice Crew are the 96th Australian performers to make it to No.1 in Australia and “Boom Boom” is the 150th song by an Australian act to make it to the top of the charts here. Youth Group in April 2006 were the last NEW Australian Group (all male or mixed, but not duo) to reach the top, and Silverchair were the last group to do so with “Straight Lines” (four weeks from March 2007), so it’s been over five years since we last had an Aussie group at the pinnacle, and Justice Crew are the 36th local group to reach that top spot.
Australia has seen a ‘Boom’ song go to No.1 eight times before, four of those being “Boom Boom” songs, and we have almost had a ‘Boom’ song go to No.1 in the previous seven decades…
1950s: Sh-Boom – The Crew Cuts (Dec 1954) 1960s: Boom Boom Baby – Crash Craddock (Feb 1960) 1970s: I Don’t Like Mondays – Boomtown Rats (Nov 1979) {closest Boom in the 70s} 1980s: Boom Boom (Let’s Go Back to My Room) – Paul Lekakis (April 1987) 1990s: Boom! Shake the Room – Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince (Jan 1994) 2000s: Boom Boom Pow – The Black Eyed Peas (May 2009) 2010s: Boom Boom – Justice Crew (Aug 2012)
Maroon 5 score their third No.2 single from their latest album “Overexposed” (TW-4), as “One More Night” jumps up two places to a new peak of No.2 and now with a Gold sales certification. It follows on from the recent two week running at No.2 single “Payphone” (June 2012, TW-19) and the song “Moves like Jagger” (August 2011, TW-80) which spent ten straight weeks at No.2, the record holder for the longest at that position.
So after two weeks at the top, fun drop down two places to No.3 with “Some Nights”, and after three weeks at No.3, Rudimental feat John Newman with “Feel the Love” is down a place to No.4. “Good Time” for Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen is at No.6 for a third week, and dropping two places to No.7 is P!nk’s former No.1 “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”. “Wide Awake” for Katy Perry is also down two places to No.9, and last weeks blast into the Top 10, “As Long as You Love Me” for Justin Bieber drops two places to No.10 this week.
The first of the two new entries to the Top 10 this week is the duet for B.o.B and Taylor Swift, who climb up together six places to No.5 with “Both of Us”. For both of them it’s their fifth Top 10 single, with Taylor scoring a No.1 with “Love Story” (March 2009) and B.o.B has gone as high as No.2 with Airplanes (May 2010). And scoring their third Top 10 entry (and second for the year) is Florence + the Machine with the current UK No.1 single “Spectrum (Say My Name)”, which is up six places to No.8.
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Ed Sheeran is touring the country at the moment, and his latest track “Drunk” leaps up twenty-five places to No.12, whilst his former singles “Lego House” (35 to 34) and “The A Team” (96 to 85) also rise back up the charts. Johnny Ruffo and Timomatic both return to the Top 20 and climb back up nine places each, with “On Top” (HP-14) for Johnny back up to No.15 and Timo’s “Can You Feel it” (HP-18) returning at No.20. “She’s So Mean” for Matchbox 20 climbs a few places to a new peak of No.26, and up one place from last weeks debut are the Far East Movement with “Turn Up the Love” to No.31. Chiddy Bang jump up six places to No.38 with “Mind Your Manners”, and returning to the Top 50 are Marina & The Diamonds with “Primadonna” (from 55 to a new peak of No.45), Entering the Top 50 for the first time is “Crazy” for Ricki-Lee (a Top 100 re-entry too) at No.46, and Cher Lloyd is up eleven places to a new peak of No.49 with “Want You Back”, her second Top 50 entry here, after December 2011’s “With UR Love” (HP-43) featuring Mike Posner.
DOWN DOWN: “This is Love” for Will.i.am and Eva Simons departs the Top 10 after five weeks (two of those at a peak of No.7), now down to No.13, but after only one week in the Top 10 at No.9, Karmin drop twelve places to No.21 with “Brokenhearted”. Missy Higgins was sitting outside the Top 10 three weeks ago with “Everyone’s Waiting” (HP-11), but this week she drops eight places to No.24. Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” is down fourteen places to No.35, and Pitbull’s “Back in Time” falls ten places to No.40. Flo Rida’s “In My Mind (Part 2)” drops sixteen places to No.61, and The Temper Trap continue to yo-yo with “Trembling Hands”, which falls twenty-three places to No.65. The xx scored their first Top 50 entry last week, but their “Angels” descend twenty-five places to No.71 this week, whilst No Doubt’s “Settle Down” (which scored the biggest T100 jump last week), falls thirty-six spots this week to No.77. Lastly Alex Clare’s “Too Close” is down twenty-nine places to No.95, although it just picked up radio additions, so it might be back up next week.
Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and British singer/rapper Example have teamed up together on the track “We’ll Be Coming Back”, which is this week’s highest new entry at No.11. This is to be the fourth single released from Calvin’s October duo third album, the previous three singles being “Bounce” featuring Kelis (HP-7, Sept 2011), “Feel So Close” (HP-7, Nov 2011) and “Let’s Go” featuring Ne-Yo (HP-17, April 2012). It’s Calvin’s eleventh Top 100 chart appearance, and ninth Top 50 entry, and this is Example’s highest charting single, having had five Top 100 entries, and now two Top 50 entries, his previous best effort was “Changed the Way You Kiss Me” (HP-16, July 2011).
Brisbane pop duo The Veronicas make their first chart appearance in almost four years (18-Aug-2008 was their last chart entry, “Take Me on the Floor” which peaked at No.7 the following week), as the girls debut at No.29 with “Lolita”. Seven of their previous nine singles have all reached the Top 10, and all previous nine chart entries have made the Top 50, with this new track coming from their forthcoming third album “Life on Mars”.
3OH!3 return to the ARIA Top 100 at No.32 with “You’re Going to Love This”, the first taste of their fourth album entitled “Omens”. It’s their sixth single to chart here, all of which have reached the Top 50, three of those making it into the Top 10, their last entry being the No.42 track “Double Vision” from October 2010.
Lower 50: LMFAO continue to bounce around the lower fifty thanks to the forthcoming Big Brother and their current TV ads, with “Party Rock Anthem” back up eight places to No.53. Havana Brown’s third single “When the Lights Go Out” is up seven places to a new peak of No.57, and Azealia Banks’ “1991” EP is up to a new peak of No.63, as the new track lifted from the EP “Liquorice” has just been issued with a great video clip. Ne-Yo’s new single “Let Me Love You” rises up twelve places to a new peak of No.69, also up twelve are Trey Songz and his “Heart Attack” (HP-70), back up to No.73. Returning to the Top 100 this week are “Mercy” by Duffy (HP-26, Sept 2008), “16 & Unstoppable” for Christina Parie (HP-69 three weeks ago), and JLo and Pitbull sneak back in at 100 with “Dance Again”, thanks to her new best of collection debuting.
Melbourne rapper 360’s album “Falling & Flying” (TW-21) scores a sixth single chart entry this week, as the latest track “Run Alone” debuts at No.56. Previous single “Child” (HP-24) achieved platinum sales status, and is sitting at No.51 this week.
British singer Birdy made a chart entry here earlier this year with her version of “Skinny Love” (HP-85), now she debuts with another cover, “People Help the People” (originally by Cherry Ghost, 1996, UK HP-27), coming in at No.62 this week, it has been recently used to promote an upcoming storyline on Neighbours. And talking of tie-ins to ads, the song “No Stopping Me” by Florida Christian rapper KJ-5,2 (reference to Jesus & the five loaves and two fish story) has been used in the ads for major Olympics sponsor Swisse the vitamin company, and the song debuts at No.81 this week.
And the last new entry of the week comes in at No.83, “Hands in the Air” for Timbaland feat Ne-Yo, which is from the “Step Up 4: Miami Heat” (TW-98) film and soundtrack. Timbaland was last on our charts late last year, when the track “Pass at Me” featuring Pitbull made it to No.61.
Karise Eden’s “My Journey” spends its sixth straight week at No.1 on the ARIA Albums chart, and also picks up a second Platinum sales certification. That album now becomes the longest continuous chart run this year (Adele has had two runs of four week’s, and a total of nine weeks at No.1 this year), and the longest run at the top since Adele’s eight week stretch from last September.
The last Australian singer to rack up seven weeks prior to this was Missy Higgins with her first album “The Sound of White” (from Sept 2004, from three No.1 runs), whilst Delta’s Innocent Eyes” was the last locally sung album to have a continuous run at the top, eight weeks from 20-Oct-2003 (weeks 20 to 27 out of the total 29 weeks at No.1).
As they now have two former No.1 singles (as of this week), fun see their “Some Nights” album climb to a new peak of No.2. Ed Sheeran reclaims his No.3 peak for “+” (May 2012), up ten places from last week, Maroon 5’s “Overexposed” returns to No.4, where the album originally debuted six weeks ago, and back up one place to No.5 is Missy Higgins’ “The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle”. All of these acts are either touring or are about to tour Australia, with Ed Sheeran and fun currently in the country, and Maroon 5 and Missy Higgins touring in October, but Missy just performed at Splendour in the Grass last weekend, more on that later.
Justin Bieber’s promo blitz helped his former No.1 album “Believe” back up to No.2 last week, it drops four places to No.6 this week. One Direction are hitting our TV screens in mid August (after the Olympics) as part of the new series for X-Factor, and their “Up All Night” album holds at No.7 this week, but after two weeks at No.3, The Voice runner-up Darren Percival’s “Happy Home” album drops down five places to No.8. Katy Perry is also down, she drops two places to No.10 with her “Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection” album.
The highest new entry of the week is the third album for Ben Drew, better known as rapper/actor Plan B, who debuts at No.9 with “ill Manors”, which also doubles as the soundtrack to his first debut self-written and directed feature film of the same name. This album debuted at No.1 in the UK last week, becoming his second there (of three released), and this is his second chart entry in Australia, his 2010 album “The Defamation of Strickland Banks” reaching No.25 here in February of 2011. So this make “ill Manors’ his first Top 10 entry in Australia.
SPLENDOUR IN THE MOVERS: The music festival ‘Splendour in the Grass’ was held last weekend (27th to 29th July, 2012) in Byron Bay, and a flow on affect from some acts has helped their albums back up the charts this week. In the Top 10 are fun and Missy Higgins, while last weeks top ten entrant Angus Stone is this week down to No.11. Lana Del Rey appeared on Saturday, and her “Born to Die” album regains nine places on the charts to climb back up to No.13. 360 was there, and his album “Falling & Flying” is back up four places to No.21; Jack White headlined on Friday night, thus his “Blunderbuss” album reclaims eleven places to No.23; Hilltop Hoods performed on Saturday, and their former No.1 album “Drinking From the Sun” is back up seven places to No.24. Miike Snow return to the Top 100 at No.48 with “Happy to You” (HP-16), and rising back two places are Sunday night headliners The Smashing Pumpkins, as their “Oceania” albums is back up to No.51. The Shins charge back up sixteen places to No.58 with “Port of Morrow” (HP-4), and lastly Kimbra sees her “Vows” reclaim two places back up the chart to No.82 (HP-4). Non Splendour acts rising include Florence + the Machine who score a second Top 10 single this week from “Ceremonials” (TW-18 from 24), “Cornerstone” for the Hillsong Live group climbs back up nine places to No.19, and Nickleback’s “Here and Now” (TW-28 from 36) is back up due to tickets going on sale for their upcoming concerts.
DOWN DOWN: Angus Stone’s “Broken Brights” falls seven places to No.11 this week; Keith Urban’s “The Story So Far” (10 to TW-14) leaves the Top 10 for the first time in its twelve weeks chart-run. Slipknots “Antennas from Hell” drops thirteen places to No.29, Gaslight Anthem’s “Handwritten” is down sixteen places to No.32, and last weeks highest debut of “Gossamer” for Passion Pit falls twenty-four places to No.36. Batman – The Dark Knight Rises, falls dramatically, down thirty-seven places to No.56 (from No.19), whilst nineteen places from No.40 to No.59 for Nas makes “Life is Good” (HP-27) not so good for him. House vs. Hurricane see their “Crooked Teeth” (HP-20) album fall twenty-eight places to No.75, whilst “Band of Brothers” (HP-32) for Hellyeah drops down thirty-six places to No.87, but the biggest drop of the week goes to Paul Costa, who falls out of the Top 100 from last weeks No.32 debut for “Wheels and Steel” (HP-32).
The new Australian feature film The Sapphires opens around the country on August 9th, but due to ten of the sixteen songs being by lead-actress and pop singer Jessica Mauboy, her fans have gone out and brought it a week earlier to its screen debut. Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sam & Dave and Darren Percival contribute some of the other songs to the soundtrack, which debuts at No.17 this week, plus it also features Jessica’s new single “Gotcha”.
Jennifer Lopez first charted in Australia with the No.1 single “If You Had My Love” (July 1999), and has since gone on to have over twenty chart entries here, with her latest single “Dance Again” (TW-100) being lifted from her first ever best of collection “Dance Again… The Hits”, which debuts at No.20 and features 13 of her hits (16 on the deluxe edition).
The iTunes exclusively released Beatles compilation “Tomorrow Never Knows” debuts at No.34 this week, and features fourteen of the bands ‘most influential rock songs’. Major singles featured on the set include “Revolution”, “Paperback Writer”, “You Can’t Do That”, and the albums title is taken from the track featured on their 1966 ‘Revolver’ album.
Three weeks ago, the Elton John vs. Pnau album “Good Morning to the Night” debuted at No.1 in the UK, this week it debuts here at No.40. The fifth album for US MC and rapper Rick Ross becomes his first to chart here debuting at No.41 is “God Forgives, I Don’t”. Joss Stone’s sixth album is entitled “The Soul Sessions Volume II”, and it enters the ARIA Albums chart at No.42, making it her fifth album to chart here, and her fourth Top 50 entry, as her 2011 album “The LP” only made it to No.58 in August of 2011, her fourth album not charting here at all.
The 2012 Olympic Games held in London this year had their opening ceremony at the end of July, and the soundtrack from that spectacle debuts at No.44 entitled “Isles of Wonder: Music from the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games”, and is a two disc set of all of the music from that opening show. It also becomes the third Olympics album to chart in Australia, as we had our first in 1996 with “Rhythm of the Games: 1996 Olympic Games Album” (HP-53, July 1996), then the next games was ours, and “The Games of the XXVII Olympiad, Official Music from the Opening Ceremony: Sydney” reached No.1 for three weeks in late September of 2000.
The last Top 50 entry of the week comes from local singer/songwriter Tamara Stewart and her album “Apple Seed” at No.49. Tamara appeared on the Blind Auditions for The Voice (Round 6) this year, so she is already benefitting from that appearance by taking her first album straight into the Top 50 first week.
Lower 50: Thanks to a new entry of “People Help the People”, Birdy’s self-titled (HP-29) album returns to the Top 100 at No.52, and the newly re-packaged “Future History” (HP-9) for Jason DeRulo returns this week at No.54. “Making Mirrors” (HP-1) for Gotye is back up twenty-seven places to No.61, and David Guetta’s “Nothing But the Beat” (HP-3) climbs up fifteen places to No.67. Also returning to the Top 100 are albums from The Beatles “1” (HP-1) at No.84; “Sigh No More” (HP-1) for Mumford & Sons at No.89 and “Hits” (HP-1) for Jimmy Barnes at No.99.
The only new entry in the lower half of the Top 100 is the fourth soundtrack from the dance movie series ‘Step Up’, the new film entitled “Step Up 4: Miami Heat”, which enters at No.98 and it’s lead single also debuts; “Hands in the Air” for Timbaland and Ne-Yo at No.83. The previous three soundtracks have also charted…
Matt Corby - Into The Flame EP Marina and the Diamonds - Primadonna (I think?)
Ricki-Lee - Crazy Cher Lloyd (feat Astro) - Want U Back Calvin Harris (feat Example) - We'll Be Coming Back The Veronicas - Lolita 3OH!3 - You're Gonna Love This
As much as I love to see old songs leave I am glad to see Never Let Me Go by Florence not leave the top 50 this week. Hopefully it can score 20 weeks within the top 50. A great ballad and it's good to see Australia got it right and made it a hit!
I know this discussion is brought up regularly but something really bugs me with the fact that a song that has peaked at #49 can go gold (I'm speaking about One Direction).
20 years ago it was an achievment if a top 10 song would go gold. These days that could be said about a song that makes the top 50.
Same could be said for James Morrison (as much as I love the song), he only peaked at #14. 20 years ago it was only the really big hits that would go double Platinum, usually less than ten.
Karise Eden - You Won't Let Me is out! NO VOICE! Interesting how Sarah De Bono's album continues to slide despite having an additional charting song. Last edited:
These songs have spent the entire year inside the ARIA top 100 singles chart, this is in-line with australian-charts.
FLO RIDA & SIA - Wild Ones LMFAO - Sexy & I Know It MATT CORBY - Into The Flame [EP] - Brother ONE DIRECTION - What Makes You Beautiful ED SHEERAN - The A Team GOTYE & KIMBRA - Somebody That I Used To Know
So your saying that it's better that a group of untalented dancers who lie about singing deserve #1 over a talented band making music that's only lower quality in you're opinion? I think not

Chart music is really at a low point if Justice Crew can have a #1 single, I just loled when i saw the chart and loled even harder at hijinx's artistry
Does it have a video for the remix version or only for the slower original?
Although we've had some rather ordinary #1s of late at least we've had some decent top 10 hits. Rudimental, WillIAm, Florence, Karmin to name a few. Hopefully Calvin and Ed will add to this list.

At the moment I'm finding it a bit cluttered but I'll give it time to get used to it. I do like that they've dumped the mystery of the TI of re-entries!
To me it looks like Aria are gonna try and be billboard. Don't be surprised if they end up buying Rianz and do what they do with Canada or start including radio

When BillyBrett said he had never hoped to see Radio Airplay into our charts, it got me thinking what our charts would actually look like WITH Airplay, so I've come up with this system where Airplay and Sales have a 50% influence on this combined chart each. While it's not the most accurate, it's still interesting to look at. Justice Crew are surprisingly still at #1.
This is Last week's Airplay and the past ARIA chart.
