2013 coming soon...
Woohoo can't wait!
THE WORST SONGS OF 2013

This is the first worst of list I've done (barring a mid-year chart I did last year). Many of the songs on the list are perhaps a bit higher than what they're really worth (such as "Roar", "I Love It' & "True Love"), but they're over-popularity, through chart performance and radio exposure, gave them an edge and pushed them higher up the list than what they would have been.

I didn't spend much time on this list either (an hour or so compared to the 6 hours on my best of list), and haven't put an explanation as to why the songs are bad. After all, if I've spent an hour assorting these terrible songs, why would I want to waster another hour describing how horrifically awful they are (most of them are quite self-explanatory).

Here it is...

1.Taylor Swift – 22
2.Taylor Swift – Sweeter Than Fiction
3.Havana Brown feat. R3hab & Prophet – Big Banana
4.Karmin – Acapella
5.R Kelly – Black Panties (Any song off the album! Take your pick! - I would recommend the songs "Marry The Pussy", "Show Ya Pussy" or "Crazy Sex")
6.Kirin J Callinan – Way II War
7.Katy Perry – Roar
8.P!nk feat. Lily Allen – True Love
9.Drake – Started From The Bottom
10.Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX – I Love It

11.DJ Snake feat. Alesia – Bird Machine
12.Lil Wayne feat. 2 Chainz – Rich As F***
13.Sage The Gemini feat. IamSu – Gas Pedal
14.Major Lazer feat. Bruno Mars, 2 Chainz, Tyga & Black M/Mystic – Bubble Butt (Both versions)
15.Beyonce – Bow Down
16.Trinidad James – All Gold Everything
17.Clinton Sparks feat. 2 Chainz, Macklemore & D.A. – Gold Rush
18.Migos feat. Drake, Meek Mill & Tyga – Versace
19.2 Chainz feat. Fergie – Netflix
20.Flo Rida feat. Pitbull – Can’t Believe It

21.Jason Derulo – With The Lights On
22.Tinie Tempah feat. 2 Chainz – Trampoline
23.Drake – Worst Behaviour
24.Baauer – Harlem Shake

27.Miley Cyrus – Do My Thang
28.Tyga – Get Loose (tied)
Tyga feat. Cedric Gervais, Wiz Khalifa & Mally Mall – Molly (tied)
Tyga feat. Jadakiss – Hit’em Up (tied)

Tyga feat. Lil Wayne – 500 Degrees (tied)
Tyga feat. Rick Ross – Dope (tied)
33.Abbe May – Karmageddon
34.Machinedrum – Eyesdontlie
35.Alison Gold – ABCDEFG
36.Mike Will Made-It feat. Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa & Juicy J – 23
37.Miley Cyrus – We Can’t Stop
38.Britney Spears – Work B**ch!
39.Havana Brown – Warrior
40.Rihanna – Pour It Up

41.Justin Bieber feat. R Kelly – PYD
42.Lady Gaga feat. R Kelly – Do What U Want
43.A$AP Rocky feat. Drake, 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar – F**kin’ Problems
44.One Direction – One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)
45.will.i.am feat. Justin Bieber - #thatPower
46.Alison Gold – Chinese Food
47.Bingo Players feat. Far East Movement – Get Up (Rattle)
48.Paramore – Ain’t It Fun
49.Robert DeLong – Global Concepts
50.Youngblood Hawke – We Come Running

EDIT: I think Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" deserves a retrospective mention here. Not sure I could pinpoint a position now, but it would probably be in the worst 20 of 2014. Very bad song.

THE BEST SONGS OF 2013

Seeing as I don't have the time to orchestrate a countdown, I'm simply going to display my top 150 here in one full post.

2013 wasn't as good a year for music for me as previous years. Only my top 5 of this year managed to nab a 6* rating, much less than in previous years.

What I did notice in my explanations of the top 10 year however is that it took multiple listens for me to get around to loving them. Songs such as "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk and "I Could Be The One" by Avicii vs. Nicky Romero took extensive listening before my coming around to liking them. Maybe had I listened to other songs more often there would have been more 6* ratings, but I'm happy with the list in the end.

Having listened to more music last year than in the years prior, I must say that the songs after the top 5 are all quite solid.

Also, most of my top 10 songs have a rating of 4 or above on this website, so this would seem to suggest that my top songs agree with the general consensus.

By my count, Stromae managed to grab the most songs in the top 150 (a mammoth 10 songs), followed by both the Arctic Monkeys (7) and Avicii (7). That makes up a fair majority of the list.

Anyway, without further ado, here is my top 150 of 2013...

1. Papaoutai – Stromae

Comments: Stromae, the artist with the most entries in this year’s list (10), claims #1 on this year’s list as well.
From the brilliant album “Racine carrée” (which surprisingly means “square root” in English rather than “racing car”), the Belgian genius managed to release this catchy electronic pop hit that made #1 in both Belgium and France.
The beats, especially after the chorus, are what caught me the first time around and had me listening to it on repeat the night I first heard it. Then, through these repeated listenings, the desperation in the lyrics had me looking for a translator to see what the song is about (the song being in French). And, I must say, the translated lyrics (which I only tried for this song out of all of his songs in the top 150) along with watching the music video make for fascinating viewing.
According to Wikipedia, Stromae (real name Paul Van Haver) revealed that his father, a victim of the Rwandan genocide, was the inspiration for this song. However, this song doesn’t seem to be out there with the purpose to depress, but rather to uplift. Maybe this is lost in translation upon me, but I sought much joy in listening to this song this year.
Now I just listen to the song on its own without the English lyrics and love it equally as much.
Stromae has had one song prior to this year’s top 150 in the list, “Alors on danse” making #12 on the list in 2010, my first top 150 chart.

KingBandicoot review: Very catchy song, even though I don't understand any of the lyrics.
Remembered him from "Alors on danse" a few years ago, and this is almost up to the same great standard.
EDIT: This is now clearly my favourite song of his, and perhaps even my favourite song of the year so far. Excellent. 5* -> 6*.

2. Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton

Comments: Just claiming its position as my favourite #1 of the year, this toe-tapper from independent American artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, becoming their third Australian #1 altogether.
This song really had it all for me. The inspirational rapping, the smooth brass section and the soulful vocals of Ray Dalton. Just pure bliss to listen to.
This #2 placing backs up Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s #6 of “Thrift Shop” last year.
NOTE: I know this was a 2012 song, but I’m giving it a place in this chart as it had most prominence in 2013.

KB review: Brilliant!!! A very catchy song!!!!
EDIT: Okay. I'm absolutely loving this now! 5* -> 6*.

Aus-charts rating: 4.12 (129)

3. R U Mine? – Arctic Monkeys

Comments: Just a stunning rock track from the English band, presenting the absolute best from the ripping album “AM”.
A solid rock track the whole way through, this song was first heard by me early in the year. Not listening to it for a couple of months, I stumbled upon it again and it eventually became one of my most listened to songs of 2013. A true fairy-tale story.
NOTE: I also know this was a 2012 song (made very early in the year as well). But, as it was released on an album released in 2013, and the fact that it really deserved to be in the list allowed it to qualify.

KB review: A very cool song! 4.5*
EDIT: Getting even better with time. 4.5* -> 5.25*.
EDIT 2: This is just brilliant now. Definitely a 6*, I've been loving it all year. It will make my top 150 this year, even if it was made last year because it deserves to be in a best of countdown. 5.25* -> 6*.

4. Get Lucky – Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams

Comments: Perhaps the smoothest track of the year, French electronic pop artists Daft Punk impressed critics and music lovers alike with this combination of slick Pharrell Williams vocals accompanied with Nile Rodgers’ tight groove on guitar.
At first, I must admit I didn’t find it great, and was a bit shocked that it was able to garner such great worldwide sales. At that point in time, I put it down to the significant hype because their upcoming album release.
But this was definitely a grower, and a song of the highest quality. The seventeen plus countries where this made #1 can’t be wrong.

KB review: Pretty cool.
EDIT: Getting even cooler. 4* -> 5*.
EDIT 2: One of the best songs of the year. 5* -> 6*.

5. Love Me Again – John Newman

Comments: John Newman’s first single release was just brilliant.
I didn’t know what to expect from him after his performance on perhaps the best song of last year in retrospect (“Feel The Love” by Rudimental), but he managed to come barnstorming out with this soulful single release.
This song just further reinforced my initial interpretations of his voice, and made me realise Newman is able to adapt his voice to multiple styles of music. One to continue looking out for in the future.

KB review: Brilliant! This guy knows a good song. But, I admit that alike some of you here that when hearing his voice, I was picturing someone completely different from what Newman actually looks like. 4.5*.
EDIT: This genuinely came to be one of my favourite songs from 2013. 4.5* -> 6*.

Aus-charts rating: 4.31 (108)

6. I Could Be The One – Avicii vs. Nicky Romero

Comments: This one didn’t capture at first. I actually found it rather ordinary and disappointing at first, especially considering it was the first Avicii song I’d heard in a year or so.
But, on one afternoon, a person I know was flicking through the stations, and kept it on this song for a while. Enjoying the song, this person flicked the station elsewhere in frustration, but as soon as I got home, I endeavoured to find this song.
Discovering I’d already reviewed it and didn’t like it, I gave it a few more listens and it grew on me exponentially.
From then, it seemed like I couldn’t avoid it on the radio. But that didn’t bother me. Because by that point I was absolutely in love with it.

KB review: Just okay.
EDIT: This one's growing on me. 3* -> 4*.
EDIT 2: Starting to love this track. 4* -> 5*.

7. Your Body Is A Weapon – The Wombats

Comments: A true late year bolter.
The Wombats have always created music which attracted me (as proven by “Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)” being #4 on my 2010 list), and this was no exception.

KB review: I was attracted to this one instantly. 4.75*.

8. Shot At The Night – The Killers

Comments: The Killers. One of my favourite artists of all time, and I know I’m not the only one on the website who feels this way.
A very cool synthpop track released as a new single on their “Direct Hits” career compilation. This seamlessly fitted in on that album, and to hear how consistently great they’ve been over multiple years without dropping their quality is a tribute to their genius.

KB review: How do The Killers continue to produce hit upon hit?!?
A bit different sounding for them (must be explained by that apparent M83 team-up), but still awesome.

9. You Make Me – Avicii

Comments: You can discard my below review of this song.
This is well above “Wake Me Up” now. This is probably the case as it never got to the stage of overplay for me, but the refreshing nature of this track was simply alluring.

KB review: Very cool, but I like "Wake Me Up" a bit more. 4.5*.

10. Hello – Stafford Brothers feat. Lil Wayne & Christina Milian

Comments: Not a song that was met with much welcome by many users of this website, but this was my guilty pleasure of the year hands-down.
To me, it was infectious pop at its best. The Stafford Brothers beats were stimulating and Christina Milian was a joy to take in.
However, I still can’t like Lil Wayne as much as I want to. His presence on this track seems a bit unnecessary to me, but it has never hindered my enjoyment of the song.

KB review: Very good and catchy track. Nice work by the Stafford Brothers, who I previously hadn't heard of. Christina Milian is pleasant to listen to, but the rating is scaled down due to Lil Wayne's pointless verse. 4.5*.

Aus-charts rating: 3.06 (17)

ALBUMS OF 2013

2013 wasn't a large album-listening year for me, having only listened to 25 full albums in total.

The albums I listened to were generally positive, however there were a few shockers, so here are my best 10 and worst 5 albums of the year.

NOTE: Some of these songs may also be late 2012, but I'm putting up all of the albums I reviewed in 2013.

BEST

1. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist
2. Arctic Monkeys - AM
3. Avicii - True
4. Imagine Dragons - Night Visions
5. Lorde - Pure Heroine
6. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
7. Stromae - Racine carree
8. Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
9. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2
10. John Newman - Tribute

WORST

1. Miley Cyrus - Bangerz
2. Buckcherry - Confessions
3. Drake - Nothing Was The Same
4. Jason Derulo - Tattoos
5. Katy Perry - Prism

Feel free to ask any questions about any of these albums, as I'm not up to writing reasons for each album, but I might not get around to answering any questions for a while.
Well, I'm a little later this year than last year, mainly due to a busy January.

For my worst songs of the year, refer to the following: http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=43911&pages=#5

I did 50 songs last year, but creating a list of songs you dislike in order feels like a chore, and after the worst 20, they become a bit hard to differentiate since they are almost all equally as bad.

Anyway, hopefully I'll have something up regarding my best songs of 2014 in the next day or so...
THE BEST SONGS OF 2014

I've made it known elsewhere that 2014 wasn't a good year for me music-wise. I've actually gone around calling it the worst year of music of all-time. Yes, I really do think 2014 was really that bad.

The good songs weren't as good, and the worst songs were absolutely atrocious.

Looking through the 15 #1 hits of 2014, there were only 3 I could say that I honestly liked and put in the countdown. A very low strike-rate when compared to previous years.

Other than that, we just got varying levels of badness. There was the meh ("Que sera", "She Looks So Perfect"), the bad ("Trumpets", "Only Love Could Hurt Like This", "Blank Space"), the boring ("Say Something", "You Ruin Me", "Thinking Out Loud"), the over-rated/over-sold ("Happy", "Uptown Funk") and then the downright awful ("Shake It Off", "All About That Bass").

Outside those #1's, even the rest of the ARIA Top 50 music that hit the charts was of a generally poor standard. Heck, I didn't even think much of most of the alternative music I listened to in 2014, granted, I didn't listen to as much of it in 2014 as I did in previous years.

It is because of these reasons that I have gone with only having a top 100 this year rather than the usual top 150, just to symbolize what 2014 meant to me music-wise.

Whereas there are usually around 250+ songs in consideration for my best-of lists, 2014 only had around 140 songs, just to put things in perspective. I'm hoping 2015 gets music back on track.

Anyway, with that negativity out of my system, I will say that there are many songs I adored in 2014.

For one, David Guetta performed a miraculous turn-around in the middle of the year. After two poor singles releases in "Shot Me Down" and "Bad", I was dreading every new boring release coming from this guy. Then, out of nowhere it seems, he pulled out his best two songs ever. I can only hope he keeps it up now, and doesn't fade back into making "those" types of songs again.

There were a few surprises in the alternative music spectrum as well. I'm happy to have come across Royal Blood and Asgeir, both of whom produced brilliant albums.

Most of all, I think the best "new" artist of 2014 for me was Sam Smith. Though he mightn't be everyone's taste, he has that soulful and beautiful voice meaning his songs never bore me, and are always rather interesting and compelling. I'm already looking forward to see what's next for him.

Just as a side-note, when I hopefully make my best-of list for the first half of the 2010's, there's a chance of few of these songs which are lower down may come into better consideration than some of the songs above them. I'm particularly pointing out "Cosby Sweater" by the Hilltop Hoods and "Take Me Over" by Peking Duk, which I didn't particularly love on first listen, but only grew to like in the final month or so of the year, and have been scaled accordingly. I should also point out Asgeir's "King And Cross", with the recent Triple J Hottest 100 reigniting my love for the song (this list was created before the Australia Day countdown).

So, without further ado, here are my top 100 of 2013...

1. Dangerous - David Guetta feat. Sam Martin

Comments: In a year where I was only able to give a few songs the perfect 6* rating, this was a clear stand-out.

It was just so refreshing to hear Guetta deviate from his usual formula, and this definitely was one of my favourites to hear on the radio and crank up the volume whenever it came on.

KingBandicoot review: I'm going to have to go with Zacco333 here and just say WOW!

I wasn't expecting this from him, and I do like that Guetta hasn't put a beat drop in there.

Time will tell whether I like this or "Lovers On The Sun" more. On first listen, I'm thinking this.

EDIT: I have to put it up to a 6* rating now. I haven't heard a better song this year (it was easier to do so this year than any other year though) an it is just super enjoyable.

Of all people, I definitely wasn't expecting David Guetta of all people to create such a magnificent song.

5* -> 6*.

2. I'm Not The Only One - Sam Smith

Comments: This one hooked me from first listen and just kept growing on me.

For me, it was a complete vocal performance that hooked me much more than "Stay With Me" (which I still liked by the way) which I wish became the big hit instead.

KB review: Brilliant and beautiful.

It seems that with each song I hear from Smith, they just keep on getting better and better.

EDIT: For me, undoubtedly one of the best songs of the year. He manages to hit all the notes perfectly at the right time.

5* -> 6*.

3. Am I Wrong - Nico & Vinz

Comments: When I first heard this on the radio, I knew this was a song I wanted to remember and listen to repeatedly, but I didn't have Shazam ready, so I had to do the old trick of remember a few lyrics and hopefully find the song.

I found it later that night fortunately enough, and it turns out it was already in the US iTunes charts, so I was a bit disappointed in myself for not discovering it earlier.

Eventually it became popular here, and was one of only a couple of top 5 hits in the first half of the year which I would describe as being truly magnificent.

KB review: Brilliant! One of the best of the year thus far.

4.75*.

EDIT: With more listens, this has grown on me further.

I can quite comfortably say that this is easily the best thing that hit the top 10 this year. I guess it's not hard to do so considering the awful songs that have hit the top 10 this year.

That's not to discredit this song, it's a very catchy piece of pop music.

It moves to a 5.5*. I don't quite like it enough to give it a flat-out 6*, but I'll round up my points rating to 6* to give it the benefit of the doubt. It's actually the first song released from 2014 that I've given a 6* rating, and it's already September. That goes to show you what I think of 2014's music.

4.75* -> 5.5*.

4. Like I Can - Sam Smith

Comments: I said in my review of "I'm Not The Only One" that with each song I heard from Smith that they seem to be getting better and better, and if given a few more months, that could've almost true for this as well.

I just love the sound of this, and I was attracted instantly. There was no need for scaling with this track. I would've loved it at any time of the year, and I don't my loving of the song abating at any time in the foreseeable future.

KB review: Nice stuff.

EDIT: I came from liking it to loving it in a very short period of time.

Becoming one of my favourite songs of the year, and it's still behind "I'm Not The Only One". I must say that Sam Smith has been a shining light in a very bleak year for pop music.

5. Me And My Broken Heart - Rixton

Comments: This song has copped a lot of crap, and while I can understand the criticism of it, it's just so infectiously catchy for me.

It sounds like what I wish Maroon 5 were now, a band that were still making music that I could consistently love.

KB review: Great on first listen. May be my favourite song of the year so far, regardless of whatever comparison it may have with some Maroon 5 songs.

6. Prayer In C [Robin Schulz Remix] – Lilly Wood & The Prick feat. Robin Schulz

Comments: A true late-year bloomer. A song I gradually went from liking to absolutely loving.

I don't think I need to say any more than the review I gave it to explain my feelings about it,

KB review: Cool.

EDIT: With more listens (not on radio, but on my own), I've come to love it and it is one of my favourite dance tracks of the year.

It is the ambiance and feel of the track that really pulls me in.

4* -> 5*.

7. Derniere Danse – Indila

Comments: I like to sprinkle a few foreign songs throughout my lists, which I think I've shown over my lists for the last few years. This was the pick of the lot for 2014.

This is just so dramatic and atmospheric. I couldn't help but let it pull me in.

KB review: A very cool sounding song. 4.75*.

8. Rather Be - Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne

Comments: When I said under my "Am I Wrong" comments that it "was one of only a couple of top 5 hits in the first half of the year which I would describe as being truly magnificent", this was that other song.

Just so breezy and refreshing, this was just blissful. How easy-listening pop music should be made.

KB review: Nice to hear something so great this early in the year. 4.75*.

9. Lovers On The Sun - David Guetta feat. Sam Martin

Comments: I enjoyed Avicii's releases last year of this style, so I was probably always going to enjoy this as well.

Not much to say about this, except that I find it marvelous, and it's the song which got Guetta back on track to making good music (in my personal opinion).

KB review: Loving it!

10. Take Me To Church - Hozier

Comments: Another song which struck me hard late in the year with its vocal and lyrical power.

For me, I'd probably say that it's the best song, lyrically, to have hit the top 5 in Australia since Lorde's "Royals".

Seeing as it is in the middle of its' chart run now, I can only hope it continues to achieve sustained success.

KB review: Good stuff.

4.25*.

EDIT: This grew on me too. Such an excellent and deep track.

One of the best songs of 2014.

I guess 2014 for you is what 2011 was for me, it took me over 2 years after that year before I could fully follow current music again. Anyway, excellent seeing Prayer In C and Rather Be in the Top 10, your thoughts on Prayer In C mimic mine and also good seeing Outside, Jubel, Maps and Faded make The Top 100.
THE BEST SONGS OF 2015

I'm not going to do a big write-up or countdown (but, when have I ever been really known to do that - besides the mid-decade, that is), but I have to say that 2015 was a very, very big improvement. We somehow went from the worst year in music for the decade (or possibly of all-time) to possibly the best (I might have to think about it a bit just to be sure though).

It also seemed like the year where musicians everywhere seemed to put a concerted effort in to try and just be better. Artists I previously disliked, including Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Jason Derulo, probably all he their best years of their musical lives in 2015, which was a very big surprise. What was even more of a surprise is how that artist in the middle actually has a couple of songs in this countdown.

I don't review many albums, and in all honesty I didn't listen to many in 2015, but Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp A Butterfly" was easily the best thing I heard in 2015, and probably my second favourite album of the 2010's thus far. Despite that, I only have four of his songs on here, mainly because the songs work better as part of the album rather than on their own individually. They tell a story, and that is why when I rate albums, I rate it based on the experience the albums provides together, rather than just what I think of each song and then averaging out all the ratings of the songs from the album to come to my final rating.

And also, I'm back to a top 150 for 2015, and to be honest, it wasn't even difficult to come up with 150 great songs from 2015. There were about 20 songs I had to cut (and there's also a few songs, namely "Uptown Funk", whose reviews I'll have to change), and making those final decisions were pretty difficult.

Anyway, my top 150 of 2015...

1. Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) – OMI

It is almost hard to justify this, but around March 2015, I knew this was going to be my #1 song of 2015.

I was just obsessed with it, and the timing of it was just perfect, in the midst of summer (which might also explain while it took until the US summer for the song to become a hit over there).

It's very simple, but in this case, simplicity works best.

With all the songs about negativity we keep hearing on the radio, it was actually great to finally hear someone that is positive for once (even if the "cheerleader" metaphor that is being used mightn't exactly be the best). It's easily the most joyful pop hit we've had in quite some time.

But, most of all, and what it particularly improves on the original, is the inclusion of the trumpet. It just pulls me in. It is exquisitely used in the way that I feel the song is mainly a build-up to that second chorus, and it segues in to it perfectly.

Overall, this is definitely the most fun and happiness I've had listening to a song in the last two years.

2. Downtown – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Eric Nally, Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee & Grandmaster Caz

This was always going to be here, wasn't it?

There's not much I can say here that I didn't already say in my review of the song, but it is the most lively song on the radio this year, and to be honest, made everything else on the radio just sound really boring in comparison (barring "Cheerleader" for some reason).

I just like a little life and fun in my music, and this delivered it in spades.

And it also got me in to liking "Uptown Funk!" (finally), so thanks to this for that.

3. Can't Feel My Face - The Weeknd

This top 3 really could have been in any order, but it looks like this is the loser. If you can call being my 3rd favourite song of the year a loser

The Weeknd's voice is a bit on the annoying side for me most of the time, and "The Hills" was the song I hated most from 2015, but I'm able to put that all behind me with this funky, perhaps you could say Michael Jackson-inspired track.

It has an irresistible groove, and somehow just keeps getting better every time that I listen to it. I didn't think that was even possible, but The Weeknd proved me wrong.

My #1 played song on my iTunes in 2015, with 60 plays.

4. Seve - Tez Cadey

I have Zacco to thank for this one. I only discovered it because he reviewed it, and I happened to be on the site when it was under the "Latest Reviews" section on the top and left hand side of the page, where the title caught my eye.

Comfortably one of the best electronic productions of the decade so far, just really chill grooves. Almost chameleon-like with the way it changes, but still keeps the good vibes flowing.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from Tez Cadey.

5. Magnets - Disclosure feat. Lorde

There was a lot of hype leading up to the release of this, and it did not disappoint.

The only song this year that I purchased the first time after hearing it, because I knew there was no way I was going to get sick of it, and I didn't.

Divine production and cool sounds from Disclosure, their best yet.

I'm not sure I would say the same for Lorde though, but it is up there. And if this is the direction she decided to take with her next album, I'm really looking forward to it.

Didn't quite become the hit I was hoping it would be in Australia, but it made the top 20 at least, so I can take that at least.

6. Shut Up + Dance - WALK THE MOON

I didn't think I could have nostalgia for a time that I wasn't even alive, but as it turns out, I do.

Enjoyable for me because of the liveliness statement I made under Macklemore's "Downtown".

It starts out great, but then just keeps building to keep getting better and better, and I just love that guitar/synth breakdown part (or whatever you call it) at 1:50. All of it is excellent, but I just love that part particularly.

One of the best chart moments in Australia (and the world) in 2015.

7. Candyland - Tobu

This just hooked me in straight away. It is just so extremely pleasant, there are times where I have listened to this 3-4 times in-a-row, by brain awash in its sweet melody.

I only stumbled upon Tobu, a Latvian DJ on YouTube, by accident really. You can ready more about how I discovered him during my commentary for Cloud 9 (#74) in my mid-decade countdown here:

http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?status=added&todo=viewthread&id=44937

I've listened to more of him since, and I've liked it all, but this is a cut above.

Looking forward to what more he has in store.

8. The Blacker The Berry - Kendrick Lamar

I might not have as many Kendrick songs in this countdown, but when I do, I really appreciate them.

The standout from a stellar album, this is the song which cuts through the most, lyrically perfectly and musically masterful.

It is the song I listened to the least in the top 10 (on my iTunes count), but you only need to listen to this once for it to make a lasting impression. It is the song which made me think me than any other song from 2015, and among the other fun music I have here, it's good to have something intellectually stimulating, and this was the best from that category in 2015.

9. Let It Happen - Tame Impala

An awesome, trippy roller-coaster from the musical genius that is Tame Impala.

It is amazing that even though this runs for almost 8 minutes, it never once loses my attention and always keeps me captivated.

I just love the music video as well (even if it only has the shortened version of the song).

I feel as if there is more I want to say about it, but I can't. I just love it.

10. No Way Out - Vicetone feat. Kat Nestel

I'm continuing to get more interested in making my own electronic productions, which explains why I have a tendency to really like the genre, and why, when you look throughout the list from 11-150, you will see that there is a lot of work by DJs.

I did listen to a lot of music from the Beatport chart, but of all the music I found on there in 2015, this was my favourite.

This was actually my most played song on iTunes until early October, until The Weeknd overtook it. It ended up being my second-most played song on iTunes in 2015 (48 plays).

I guess you could say it is similar musically to "Hello" from the Stafford Brothers, which was my #10 song in 2013, and this caught on to me in a similar way, but I like this even more.

Of all the DJs I came across on Beatport, Vicetone were definitely two of the better ones.

I've already heard a 2016 song of theirs I like, so it looks my fandom of theirs will continue into 2016 at least.

Anyway, so that is the commentary for my top 10. There is probably more I could have said that I forgot, but that is the main gist of it.

THE BEST SONGS OF 2016

So here I am, dropping my EOY list without any notice. Again.

I think it’s fair to say that 2016 isn’t a year that many people will look back on fondly. And I totally get it. Whether you are looking at issues like terrorism, the divisive US election, Brexit, the Zika virus, police brutality and racial violence, the higher than usual number of celebrity deaths or the natural disasters such as the hurricane in Haiti, there really was a lot to dislike.

However, for me personally, 2016 was a very different experience, and was very possibly the best year of my entire life. I believe that I mentioned somewhere (maybe a couple of times) that I was in Europe for about half the year, and that was really beneficial for me, as I got to see many things which seemed so imaginary and distant in the past come in to my own personal reality. It was a year that I feel I really grew as a person.

This explains why I wasn’t particularly active on this website in the second half of the year. And that may also explain why I didn’t get to listen to as much music as I would have liked, but in saying that, I still feel I got around to my fair share of music.

While it was a sour year for pop music, I personally believed that 2016 was an excellent year for music in general. So much so that even though I didn’t listen to as much music as previous years, there was so much more I liked that I couldn’t fit in to my usual top 150, so I have decided to release a full top 200 for 2016! I suppose this makes up for a very lacklustre 2014, where I struggled to put together a list of 100.

Maybe this was in part to there being so many massive releases in 2016. Even if I did have the time, there is no way you could keep up with it all, by the time you had listened to one of the big, new releases, another three had been released!

Big names like Kanye West, Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Radiohead, Rihanna, Chance the Rapper, James Blake and so much more dropped projects, and that doesn’t even include the last album of the late David Bowie, and other critically-celebrated albums by the likes of Solange, Car Seat Headrest, Angel Olsen, Danny Brown, Anohni and Sturgill Simpson, amongst so much more. Iggy Pop, The Rolling Stones and Nick Cave continue to transcend time. Kendrick Lamar and Carly Rae Jepsen dropped B-Sides. And this is all just the tip of the iceberg of what 2016 had to deliver musically.

And without further ado of what I loved from 2016, here is the list…

1. Kanye West feat. Chance the Rapper & Kirk Franklin – Ultralight Beam

As I stated in my introduction, 2016 was not a good year for many, but considering how much of 2016 panned out, if anyone needed a God dream, it was Kanye himself.

After years of just being Kanye, everything just seemed to catch up with him, and I almost feel as if this song was made knowing that some sort of mental collapse was inevitable, given his antics in recent years.

If anything though, this doesn’t particularly feel like a Kanye song, but rather a showcase for Chance the Rapper, who I feel really raised his profile in 2016. He ultimately steals the show here, but all the contributors here are excellent.

As I stated in my review, and this still holds true, it makes me feel that all in the world is just right, even if only for five-and-a-half minutes.

P.S. As a side note, it feels odd now with Kanye saying “pray for Paris”, which is where his wife Kim was robbed, which was most likely the event that triggered his collapse late in the year.

2.Kanye West feat. Ty Dolla $ign – Real Friends

Although “The Life of Pablo” is my least favourite Kanye album, and not a particularly great album overall, I think you can see why I had to vote for it in the Triple J Album Poll.

I feel this really captures what it is like living the life of Kanye. Given the dude’s polarising personality, he seems like the sort-of person that could be ripped off or mistreated by another person, but many people would simply side with the other person simply due to that person not being the “asshole”, even if he weren’t in the wrong. Heck, even a so-called “fan” sued Kanye after “The Life of Pablo” was no longer a Tidal exclusive. It really was a year where Kanye would have had to question who were his real friends and fans.

And even if I don’t live the life of Kanye, it is very relatable and does reflect the mentality of many people who miss out on so many important life events of their loved ones due to being caught up in their work, amongst other things.

In the end, this is the most honest and heartbreaking I feel Kanye has been in a long time.

3.Flume feat. Kai – Never Be Like You

My pick for my favourite hit song of 2016.

I love what Flume is doing right now, and he is really bringing something fresh to the EDM scene. And while there seems to be many imitators, there is nothing better than the original and the best.

The music here seems to take on a life of its own and glitches itself to mould around Kai’s vocals, but somehow it remains ambient and hypnotic.

Keep doing what you’re doing Flume!

4.The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk – Starboy

OMG! THAT BEAT!

I was hooked instantly with this and that is largely due to the aforementioned Daft Punk-produced beat and that slick music video that I just couldn’t stop watching.

The Weeknd seemed to try and make an artistic statement and change his image in 2016, cutting his hair and everything, to show he’s not the artist he once was.

And while the new album underwhelmed for the most part, there were still highlights, this being the absolute best of them. I would even say that it felt too good to be in the charts, considering what it was neighboured by.

I will have to admit at some point in time that I like The Weeknd more than I would care to say, given that he now has back-to-back top 5 entries in 2015 and 2016. So I’ll take the first step to doing that: The dude is a motherfucking Starboy.

5.Beyoncé – All Night

Despite all the excellent offerings off “Lemonade”, which was my second favourite album of 2016, this is the one I plumped for as my favourite.

Although not being the final song on the record, this is where the arch of the story really ends for me, or to say it better, reaches its natural conclusion, while “Formation” feels more like an awesome encore.

What I find funny is that I actually prefer to listen to the music video version of the song, including the 3-minute intro which takes excerpts from the rest of the album, over the album version of the song.

This song just really reflects a lot of the mixed emotions I was feeling, particularly towards the end of 2016.

And that is only aided further by Beyoncé’s graceful and beautiful vocals. She just does it so effortlessly, but captures the emotion of the situation precisely.

6.Jeff Rosenstock – Wave Goodnight To Me

If you were wondering what my favourite album of 2016 was after my comment under “All Night” commentary, well you now have an answer.

“WORRY.” is an album I felt a lot of people slept on. I’m not sure who I would specifically recommend it to exactly (besides everyone), probably Hijinx, irelander or bluezombie, but then again, I’m not particularly good at providing recommendations. It perfectly captures social angst and discontent of 2016, making it a rather Zeitgeist-y record while being riotous and catchy as hell.

This is the song I easily listened to the most in the final 2 months of the year. It honestly wouldn’t even surprise me if I single-handedly pushed this in to his top 5 most popular songs on Spotify with how much repeated listens I was giving to it It honestly is a great example of what this record has to offer.

To make things even better, it has a very amusing music video. I will never forget the cheesy smile Rosenstock has on his face as he walks down the street in the video, while others express their disdain towards him. And if you like “The Simpsons”, there is a cheeky reference in there for you too

Anyway, why are you still reading this commentary? COME ON, COME ON, GET OUT OF HERE! (and listen to “WORRY.”).

7.Childish Gambino – Redbone

I have never even been close to liking Childish Gambino’s prior work, so this comes as a massive shock. But then again, this doesn’t even sound like the same person. I mean, really, if you hadn’t told me that Childish Gambino were the performer of this track beforehand, I definitely would not have guessed this to be him.

All I have to say is that this is the sexiest song of the year. And, also, grooves.

8.Hudson Mohawke – Play N Go

I will concede that the song is the same thing repeated twice, but who cares when it is so massive and atmospheric.

By the time you’ve finished recovering from the first bout of it, you realise you’re about to experience the breakdown for a second time and you just let it happen, and it is just as awesome as the first time.

Exquisite.

9.The Chainsmokers feat. Daya – Don’t Let Me Down

I’d just like to preface this by saying that this really would be much higher, but “Closer” has really tainted my view of The Chainsmokers. That song just gets worse every time I listen to it, and it is really frustrating that that song overshadowed this by the time 2016 had reached its conclusion. It honestly competes with “7 Years” and “Treat You Better” as the worst hits of the year, it is just atrocious.

Anyway, this is really as perfect as pop music got in 2016. Everything is exactly in its place as it should be. It sublimely builds up to the chorus with a breakdown, and even more so, a bridge, which really pays off, and captures a lot of the frustration pent up during the verses. And the way it rolls from one section of the breakdown to the next is simply incredible.

And even with all of that, my favourite part of the song may just be the way it concludes. I just love the final 10 seconds of this song for a reason I can’t put my finger on.

And look, Daya actually does a good job for once. I’m hoping for more of that, because the early signs haven’t been positive. And even if she doesn’t, at least she’ll always have this moment.

10.Danny L Harle – Broken Flowers

This is really from much earlier than 2016, but if it good enough for Triple J’s voting list, it’s good enough for me

If you look at my iTunes account, this is comfortably my most listened to song in 2016, and for good reason. Just super fun and catchy. Danny L Harle is an artist I want to hear a lot more from.

Dang! I don't think I've ever had so much crossover with someone else's list before! 19 matches just in respective top 100s! I have similar view on Pablo, though not sure if I'd call it my least favourite (have never quite gotten into Graduation or 808s), but those tracks are stellar for sure. If I wasn't super busy with my listening today I'd say I have an album to listen to...but that will have to wait for now
Cheers! I knew there was a reason that I loved your EOY Top 300 so much!

And I'd totally recommend "WORRY.", whenever you get the time
THE BEST SONGS OF 2017

2017 was my biggest year yet for music. And that is because of two reasons.

Firstly, my DJing career took off a bit more. I scored my first ever international gig, plus I did more shows than previous years, which is momentum I hope to carry over into 2018.

But secondly, and more importantly, it was my first full year with Spotify Premium. I know, call me slow getting on to that, but it really helped expose to more music than ever before and listen to a lot of stuff which I wouldn't have gotten to had I continued the old method of listening to radio and looking at other websites.

And for a year where music played such a significant factor in my life, it feels like I spent less time on this website than I have in previous years, which is a little disappointing.

I mean, I did post some album reviews earlier in the year, but after that I dropped off a bit (I'm still holding out hope that I'll revive the movie review page some day). Hopefully 2018 is the year that I can keep progressing, but incorporate this website into my everyday life just a little bit more, despite being busy.

And that probably explains why I was so late this year, especially because there was some stuff towards the back end of 2017 which I didn't get to until January because December was so chock-full of work and other commitments.

But despite this, I got to experience my widest scope of music in 2017, and hopefully it comes with a slightly more varied list for this year and for the future.

Anyway, without further ado, here is the list...

1. Father John Misty – Total Entertainment Forever

Ah, such a tough choice to split between #1 and #2, but I had to go with this.

I don't know why, but I needed this song in 2017. Maybe it's because the issue of overwhelming technology is something that weighs on my mind a lot (especially working in that industry), and I found a song which expresses my thoughts in a way that is both simultaneously funny and devastating.

You might have to be a bit of cynic to enjoy this, but once you do, you're going to love this. I mean, even if you're not, you have to appreciate the tongue-in-cheek nature of the delivery, delivering lines like such as "Not bad for a race of demented monkeys/ From a cave to a city to a permanent party" in a way that stings, but in just the right way.

But the reason I most love this is how cinematic it is. The image he creates here sounds so futuristic, and for a song that doesn't even clock in at 3 minutes, it feels like he covers so much ground. From the acoustic guitar intro, then the transition to that first verse and the way it all swells up to the chorus. And that isn't even to mention the bridge, which has some of the catchiest horn sections I've heard all decade, and the ultimate climax, heading who knows how many years down the track to historians finding a human race dead "in their hubs" with "frozen smiles on every face". The ending really is just the cherries on top for a pretty-much perfect song for me.

I know Father John Misty mightn't actually be happy with me picking out one song like this and putting on a list (you'll know what I'm talking about if you have heard the album), so I'd recommend that everyone listens to his "Pure Comedy" album (my #1 album of 2017 btw). While this song is superb on its own, it goes up another level when you listen to it in the context of the album.

P.S. Also, there you go people saying I hate Taylor Swift! She's sort-of in the #1 spot

2.Algiers – The Underside Of Power

This is a band I've known about for quite a while, but it wasn't until this song that they truly grabbed my attention.

This was just so instant for me, with its themes of dread, but also with that amazing chorus (and chorus build-up) which seamlessly blends industrial rock, blues and gospel (upon maybe some other genres as well).

There isn't even much more I could say about it. It's just so incredible from the first listen.

3.Death From Above – Holy Books

This was the 2017 song I listened to the most, and it isn't hard to see why.

It's just something that can get you headbanging so quick as it burns everything down to the ground. It's got some totally badass hooks ("I Don't Go For No Holy Books/ Those Ancient Rhymes They Ain't Got No Hooks") and hits on some religious themes which I agree with.

Also, the way it slows down about two-thirds of the way through, only to come roaring backs to life for the outro is magical. Love it.

4.Calvin Harris – Cash Out [feat. ScHoolboy Q, PARTYNEXTDOOR & DRAM]

After listening to "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1" multiple times, I managed to find a flow I loved more than Offset's in "Slide", and that is ScHoolboy Q's second verse in "Cash Out".

I mean really, his delivery on this is hypnotising and magnetising, that it doesn't even matter that his contribution ends at about halfway through the song, he just does his job flawlessly.

That's not to say that everything else is bad, it's actually quite the contrary. Harris delivers his best groove ever (no exaggeration), DRAM changes things up nicely in the second half of the song and PARTYNEXTDOOR performs solidly on the hook. Excellent contributions all around.

5.Calvin Harris – Slide [feat. Frank Ocean & Migos]

That's not to say this is bad though.

After all, besides "Feels", this was the biggest hit from the album, and I'm really going to take the greatest memories from this one.

It has an awesome summer vibe, and although I was a little skeptical when I saw the featuring artists at first, any doubts were blown away on the first listen when everyone blended together so flawlessly.

It almost goes without saying, but Offset steals the show here, particularly with how quickly he transitions in from the end of Quavo's verse, but it just sounds so right.

People question why Takeoff was left off "Bad And Boujee", but I question why he would miss out on performing over this beat.

6.alt-J – In Cold Blood

What can I say about this?

It's funny because it's the closest these guys have ever sounded to performing that "Put It In My Butt" song that was uploaded to YouTube a couple of years ago.

Maybe it's because I can appreciate a good "la la la la la la" hook, or perhaps it's because it could almost pass as a James Bond theme song with the way it flows, but I just connected with this. I also like the jerky way it changes from verse 2 to the bridge and chorus and then back to the third verse. The sound effect of the splash in the swimming pool and that ascending scale (that sounds like it uses a different instrument for each note?) between the final two lines of the song don't go unnoticed either.

All in all though, I just really like it.

7.Joey Bada$$ - TEMPTATION

Damn, I can really get into what Joey is doing here.

From that delicious guitar lick (for a New York rapper, this just sounds so West Coast) which really makes that track, to the content of what Joey is saying, to that heartbreaking sample which introduces and closes out the track, this is the best that (pure) rap had to deliver for me in 2017.

There's even more great content on the album as well, "All Amerikkkan Bada$$", and I'd highly recommend it. My #2 album of the year.

8.Charli XCX – Lipgloss [feat. CupcakKe]

PURE TRASH! In this instance, that's a great thing.

For a Charli XCX song, it's a little odd that she is not the standout here. That honour goes to CupcakKe, who delivers two of the most outrageous and "did I just hear that?" verses of 2017. Whether it is her comparing her vagina to Winnie the Pooh, or her juices tasting sweet because she ate her pineapple, or quoting the "catch me outside" meme, there's at least twenty insane lines here.

I should also mention the beat as well, produced by the good people at PC Music. It sounds both sweet and sugary, just like lipgloss

9.Yung Lean – Red Bottom Sky

This is what Post Malone would sound like to me if I liked him, I reckon. To narrow it down even further, the way some people react when they listen to "I Fall Apart", I react the same way to this.

But I totally get where Yung Lean is coming from. Part of the original Sadboys group, and reading into Lean's backstory, I feel like he has a lot to be sad about. Whether it be about his depression, his manager having recently passed away or the drug addiction which I think he has recovered from (again, I'm not entirely sure), and keep in mind that the kid is only 21, he has been through a lot.

But this song feels like the moment when all of the bad stuff is behind you and you can see brighter days ahead. I just love the imagery he uses here as well, re-appropriating the use of "red bottoms" to mean the red streak at the bottom of the sky during sunrise, and, in essence, seeing a new day. The imagery just sounds like that of Scandinavian beauty, and I love it when artists from that area of the world do that.

There's not just that though, but also the idea of having somebody with you that knows what you've been through and also sees a more positive outlook is something I can cherish.

The beat here just sounds so dreamy as well, and that's not a sound I'm too familiar with Yung Lean having. It just adds to the beauty and atmosphere that this song creates.

I feel like at the end of my life I'm probably going to listen to this song and see it as myself moving to "another life" in a sense and will use that time to reflect on what I did right and wrong in my life.

10.Sampha – (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano

This song has significant emotional importance to me, as I had a parent of mine diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year when I first heard this song. Luckily, my parent has, for now, overcome it, but by that time, this is a song that I hold very close to me.

I rarely hear piano ballads which sound this powerful, and while the lyrics are really impacting, it's his vocal delivery which sells this. He did perform this song at his own mother's funeral, so it makes sense, but there are few songs I have listened to as much but have made such a lasting impact on me.

Anyway, thanks for reading my little summaries on what made that top 10 so fantastic for me. Hope you enjoy the rest of the list...

THE BEST SONGS OF 2018

2018 was a year of opportunity for me. A lot happened. I always had something on my plate, and it really was a very exciting and rewarding year for the most part.

Whether it working in customer service, finance, entertainment, fashion, film, sport or countless other things, I always had 3+ jobs on-the-go, and it is a year that I can look back on with pride.

Unfortunately, all this work does take a toll on you elsewhere. Sleep was one way. Music consumption was another.

Yes, I know I mentioned last year that 2017 was my biggest year for music, and in reality, 2018 would still blow pretty much every other year out of the water for music listening (since I’m still gigging and I have to stay on top of everything), but it just wasn’t as big, you know?

It did involve me having to listen to music in a different way though, because there was still heaps of music I wanted to get through. So rather than just getting to sit alone and listen to music in peace, every time I was on the train, or on a flight, or could find a little time before I went to bed, I would fill in all those gaps with as much music as I can.

And this goes to show that music isn’t just a hobby. It’s a passion. And it’s always loads of fun putting this list together

Now, some of you may be thinking that perhaps this list isn’t of as high a calibre as last year’s list, but that is not the case at all. In fact, there were over 300 songs I really liked in 2018, so cutting it down to 200 was harder than ever. Heck, sorting out the top 25-30 in particular was about as hard as it has ever been, this really is a top notch group.

I was even considering writing a full commentary on the whole top 100 this year, because I do have much to say about each of these songs. But, you know, time restrictions and everything. I’ll hopefully end up reviewing all of these songs on the site anyway.

Anyway, without further ado, here is the list...

1. Ghost – Rats

You know that feeling after you put together a year-end list, look at the songs you have at the top-end, and then you genuinely worry whether you’ll find a list of songs you’ll love as much (or more) for the coming year? Surely that isn’t just me who feels that, right? I love it when those worries are absolutely destroyed early in the year.

You may be looking it up and seeing that this was only released as a single in April, but this song completely dominated me in 2018, particularly in the first half of the year.

I was sort-of fascinated by Ghost, but it wasn’t until 2018 where it turned into full-on obsession. Sure, Meliora was a very good record, but, as it is probably very clear by now, I do enjoy their stuff which is a little more accessible, which is a direction they have been trending in for a while now.

But whatever way you look at it, this is a mammoth of a track. Borrowing from that 80s glam/arena rock style, I can’t get enough of the very rock’n’roll, kick-ass lyrics, the “Aaah whoah” yelping in the chorus, and the indescribably amazing guitar passages pulled straight from the pits of hell. And the solo, oh the solo. Air guitars at the ready.

Most of all, this is just the most fun I had to listening to a song in a long time. I listened to this almost twice as much as the next most (non-Ghost) song released in 2018, meaning it really became a go-to track for me. And I’m sure it will remain that way for many years to come.

2.Death Grips – Black Paint

I started exercising more towards the end of 2018. It really is nice to keep moving and feel active, in a way that is different to work anyway.

The reason I bring this up is because when I exercise, I like to listen to music. And on Spotify, there’s an exercise playlist called “Beast Mode”. The fact that this song isn’t on that playlist makes it completely pointless.

I’m not sure I have heard any song as overwhelming in its hostility as I have with this song. And that is what makes me love it.

Just the way it takes those first few seconds before kicking in really set the mood and amp up the fury. You can’t help but just get angry and join MC Ride along for the journey.

Despite all that though, I’m always amazed at how Death Grips songs find ways of being incredibly catchy, beneath all the raucousness. I’d particularly like to point out that guitar during the chorus, buried in the mix.

Overall, this song packs a knockout blow of a punch with every moment feeling like a full-on assault.

Best listened to with headphones on and on full blast.

3.Pusha T – The Story Of Adidon

Oh boy, I have a lot to say about this one.

I was originally going to write a full-on review for this, describing the genius and intelligence in every line, but I’ll try and keep it brief.

I know I’m not the only one who thinks this, but I am sick of the Drake overexposure. I, like many others, listened to “Scorpion” (only out of obligation), and yeah, it was poor on the whole. Don’t get me wrong, it had a couple of good tunes on there, but altogether, it was bloated, bland and forgettable.

Even before that, Drake’s last few projects haven’t been interesting in the slightest. But what bugs me the most is his attitude over the last couple of projects.

Enter Pusha T.

This rivalry is nothing new. Pusha has been going back-and-forth with Drake’s camp for quite some time now, and still has a score to settle it seems.

With the release of his (very good) “Daytona” project, it ended on “Infrared”, which takes some blatant shots at Drake and his (alleged?) use of ghost-writers.

Sure enough, Drake took the bait, released “Duppy Freestyle” in response, and while I’m not the biggest fan of his, I thought it was a good response. He delivered some barbs, such as claiming Pusha exaggerates his drug-dealing history (which is a little hard to disagree with) and sending out an OVO invoice to Pusha for selling him more records on the back of the publicity of this whole spat. It was a pointed, but somewhat playful response.

Pusha doesn’t do playful though. In fact, it seems like he had this whole track ready-to-go, just in case Drake did respond.

And Drake, for a few days, gloated on the back of what he thought was another triumph over another unworthy adversary, following that whole Meek Mill thing from a few years back.

Then came this. And boy, is it full of venom and spite. Pusha doesn’t mince his words and goes after anyone and everyone involved in Drake’s life. Whether it is Drake’s dad’s Instagram antics, former drug addiction and the way Drake “parades” him around, Pusha taunting “40”, Drake’s long-time friend and most-trusted producer, about his MS and impending death, and most notably, Pusha publically revealing that Drake has a child with a former porn star, this song was an all-out assault and deconstruction of Drake’s life.

And that is without mentioning the other subject matter, such as Drake repeating the cycle of parental absenteeism, such as his own father did to him, the use of “The Story of OJ” sample which is pertinent to the lines about Drake questioning his own identity, the cover art (how did this not become known before 2018?) which hones in on that same point, the use of the “six-six-six” soundbite to associate Drake with the devil, I have honestly listened to this over 30 times and, without exaggeration, I have found a new reference or hidden meaning each time. On the back of this, I actually think it is one of the most intelligent songs I have ever heard.

Furthermore, I can listen to it knowing that it didn’t actually destroy Drake’s life. After all, he still had another #1 hit after this track was released, and “Nice For What” remained huge throughout it all. Regardless of this, though, it was still nice to see him get knocked down a couple of notches after all the bullshit from the last couple of years.

While he has bounced back though, just a little afterthought I have for you. I wonder how Drake’s kid is going to handle it in the future if he ever finds out about this song? Mum, what is a porn star? Dad, why did you want me aborted? That’s some heavy stuff coming up in that kid’s life, and hopefully everything turns out the best for him.

At the end of the day, this is easily the most essential and entertaining track of 2018, without a doubt.

4.Everything Everything – Breadwinner

Have you ever come across a song/project from a couple of years ago that you adored, and then you followed that artist just to see if you would like any of their new material?

That is Everything Everything for me. Funnily, they are the artist I streamed the second most in 2018 (behind Ghost, obviously), despite not releasing a full-length LP.

That is because I keep returning to “Get To Heaven”. I can’t get enough of it, particularly the first half of the album. Without question, the first half of that album would be one of my favourite “half albums” of all-time, just super creative and catchy, all while taking on some hard-hitting subject matter.

I did listen to “A Fever Dream” in 2017, and as you may have observed, I had a few of those tracks in my 2017 EOY list. But it wasn’t until this came out in early 2018 that I felt they had truly recaptured some of their best form.

The infectious, polyrhythmic passages finds a way to drill itself into your head right from the get-go and it doesn’t let up. I also love the lyrics it provides regarding domestic relationships, with quirky details, as usual with Everything Everything, and the bridge is a showstopper as well. It cannot be denied.

5.Unknown Mortal Orchestra – American Guilt

Have you ever come across a song/project from a couple of years ago that you adored, and then you followed that artist just to see if you would like any of their new material? Oh wait, I already said that, but it still applies here.

“Multi Love” is my most streamed song since the beginning of 2017, which may come as a surprise, but I can say now, without hesitation, that it would be in my top 10 songs of the decade. I’m not here to talk about that song though.

Since I was a little late getting a start in 2018 after making my 2017 EOY list (not the case this year), this was the first song I added to my “2018” playlist, and it’s quite neat that it ended up in my top 5 songs of the year.

This one, I just love how sweaty and psychedelic it sounds, even the outro is incredible. While “Sex & Food” didn’t do much for me, as many of the messages on the album didn’t work for me when delivered with a mellowed-out, lo-fi sound, this one hits the right notes and is great to bang your head along to.

6.Ghost – Dance Macabre

“Prequelle” ruled my life in 2018. I just couldn’t stop returning to it. After all, I have 4 songs from the album in my top 12, a feat no other artist has been able to achieve.

This one is probably even more accessible and poppy (?) than “Rats”, that refrain is just huge and would go down stunningly at a live show, which I’d hope to catch from these guys someday.

My second most streamed song of 2018, and probably the one I had the second most fun with.

Seriously though, if you haven’t heard “Prequelle”, get on to that right now. I guarantee you’ll have a good time, especially if you have an inclination for 80s glam rock.

7.Against All Logic – You Are Going To Love Me And Scream

When trying to describe this song to a friend, I described it as encapsulating that sense of “going out for a big night out on the town where something really bad is going to happen to you, but you just don’t know it”. That’s pretty specific, but I can’t put it any other way.

I love embracing different types of house music, and while I found the album this came off to be overhyped, this just has an incredible sense of dark atmosphere that takes you into a depressed mental state. If that sounds like it is for you, look no further.

8.Stromae – Defiler

Stromae [*bows down*]. I can’t get enough of the dude. I just hope he keeps releasing more music and keeps up the quality. I’m not sure how many more years I’m going to be able to deal with one track a year.

Apparently this was released for a fashion show for his wife, and I can definitely see how it would work in that sense, even if it isn’t as upbeat as most catwalk music that I think of.

I liken this to Tame Impala’s “Let It Happen”, in that it is an expansive and explorative musical landscape which takes me to many sonic universes. Again, the atmosphere works wonders and takes you to another place in time.

9.Young Thug – Sin [feat. Jaden Smith]

After some somewhat distinguished picks, he comes my “basic” pick. As in, I really like it, but I totally get why others wouldn’t think much of it.

A few years back, a whole bunch of us posted a list of our favourite artists of all time, and then put them all together into a combined list. For me, my personal list would be pretty different nowadays, and the major difference would be the presence of Young Thug. Outside of Kanye West, Thugger would probably be my second highest rapper on the list, almost certainly in the top 10. That is largely on the back of his “JEFFERY” project, where nearly every song just works. If I were to do a retrospective 2016 EOY list, there would be 4/5 songs from that project in my top 20, as well as maybe another one from “Slime Season 3”.

It was that love of him which helped me get into this, but it is largely a set of personal circumstances which make this song mean a lot to me.

Late in 2018, I was catching a fair few late night, “red-eye” flights, and this became the soundtrack for those late nights as I looked out over many a dark metropolis. It just takes me back to those times I had this song on repeat.

Jaden Smith is here as well, who isn’t someone I thought I would ever say was going to make an appearance in my top 10, but here we are. In all honesty, he doesn’t do too badly, fitting the vibe of the track quite nicely. It also gives Thugger the opportunity to do some Will Smith wordplay, so you win either way.

10.Daughters – The Reason They Hate Me

Alright, I admit it. Fantano does influence what I like. Can’t lie about it at this point.

I really respect the rough, abrasive, harrowing attitude of “You Won’t Get What You Want”, but it wasn’t necessarily my thing. Except for this song.

Maybe it is just because it follows a more typical song structure that I was able to get more behind it, but there are still many experimental elements in play here. My absolute favourite moment is the bridge where you get those sharp, layered guitar tones that sends jagged pangs of fear straight down my spine, but the overpowering guitars and hostile vocals make this the complete package, and communicates a vision of how humans would behave if they let down their facades and let their inner animalistic impulses take over.

THE BEST SONGS OF 2019

I know what you are thinking. It is September 2020, and it is only NOW that you are putting out your Best of 2019 list KB? I can explain. January is typically my busiest month of the year, work-wise, and then 2020 happened…

There has been a lot going on this year, that it is honestly hard to keep up with it all. I made this list in the first week of the year, so I have had it on my hard drive for a while. Usually, when I find myself with a day off, that is when I give my list a good listen-through, and then write up my official commentary. With everything that has happened, this seemed to get lost in the shuffle, but now I have finally gotten around to it.

(Side note: I did submit my list for our 2020 Aus-Charts combined countdown but got it in a few days late. What makes it all the more disappointing is that the #1 and #2 songs on the combined countdown were pretty high up on my list, which meant I could have continued my streak of the #1 in the combined countdown appearing on my year-end list for 6 consecutive years. I’m actually still going to count it anyway ).

I also want to get this list out there before I make my decade-end list as well (which should hopefully be made much sooner than this list was). Looking back on it, it is hard to believe that I have already created 10 year-end lists already.

As for 2019, those were the good old days. I don’t remember too much about 2019 to be frank, but it sure was better than what we are living through right now. Going to festivals and events, visiting friends, travelling, it was rather good, if my brain serves me correctly.

I usually like to expand upon what happened in the year that just transpired, but I don’t have that much to say. I think it was fine enough (probably).

Honestly, I just want to get on with the song commentaries, and given how long both you and I have waited for that at this point, can you blame me for wanting to so?

Anyway, without further ado, here is the list...

1.Weyes Blood – Movies

This might be the only time making one of these lists where I feel like I am putting a piece of art, rather than a song, on it. This is more than just a song; it is a spiritual and metaphysical experience.

The synth at the beginning makes you feel like you are floating on air, and Natalie’s vocals are nothing short of angelic, and they only reach another level during the multi-tracking of the chorus. But even then, every transition “Movies” takes is so celestial, it almost seems too perfect to believe that a human created it.

So much so that the ending of this song is a closer sonic representation of climbing a stairway to heaven than “Stairway to Heaven” is. And that is not a comparison I make lightly.

As some of you may know, I used to review movies on my own thread on this website (a hobby I still undertake, just elsewhere in a lesser capacity). And as somebody that was getting back into his obsession with movies throughout 2019, it almost feels as if this was specifically made for me.

And just like Natalie, I see movies as an escape as well. Sometimes it feels like the only place where life makes sense, which is ironic, considering many movies are nonsensical. But Natalie just nails down that feeling of watching a life-changing movie, which makes you realise that life is worth living.

Another note I want to make is that I recall writing in my 2017 year-end list, for Yung Lean’s “Red Bottom Sky”, that that was the last song I would want to listen to before I die. I think that song has now found a replacement, or at the very least, a companion.

“Movies” demands your whole attention, takes over your body and demands an emotional response. It is one of the best songs I have ever heard and a moving, touching, affecting experience. It only makes sense that a song called “Movies” is so cinematic.

2.Lil Nas X – Old Town Road (Remix) [feat. Billy Ray Cyrus]

And now for something completely different…

This never fails to bring a smile to my face, and easily the most fun song (and meme) of 2019. It was just a fun song to root for and seemingly against the odds, it went on to become the longest running #1 in US charts history.

There ended up being many versions of this song, and I ended up liking all of them (I could give-or-take “Seoul Town Road”). I was honestly tossing up whether to put this version or the version with Young Thug and Mason Ramsey on the list, but this was the version that truly made me fall in love with “Old Town Road”, so it just had to be it.

With this success that “Old Town Road” found, Lil Nas X proved himself to be a bit of a marketing genius (notwithstanding his already popular Twitter following beforehand).

Everyone that followed pop music in 2019 knows the story of this one. Found a little popularity on Tik Tok, and then found its way on to the Billboard Hot Country Charts. At some point, Billboard figured that the song wasn’t “country enough”, which started this whole controversy (which wasn’t start by Nas, I might add), and then the song earned the backing of one Billy Ray Cyrus, who supported it as a country song.

And this is where the awesome meme potential of the song really took off, not just because of how bizarre of a crossover this was (and I love seeing bizarre crossovers), but also because of the fact that Nas himself wanted a Billy Ray feature before the song ever took-off.

But the real twist of genius is actually that this remix has Nas undertaking a more “country” sound in his lyrics and performance, while Cyrus sounds a bit more rap-inspired (I just love his performance on the track btw), exposing that these musical genres, which appeal to very different demographics, may actually have a lot more in common than some people may give them credit for.

I even remember seeing the memes saying that this song “ended racism”, which, at this point in 2020 can easily proven to be untrue, but the song was a nice moment, nonetheless.

I also must mention what a perfect fit Cyrus is for the song as well. Seeing Nas and Cyrus chat in the studio while making the song was a rather touching moment, seeing one person that has been through the industry passing down his life lessons to someone beginning his career. It is reflected in the lyrics as well, with Cyrus saying he has been through it all and doesn’t need to worry, now he’s just going to enjoy living his life like a Rockstar.

It is worth highlighting some of the smaller moments too. The hums and the guitar strums, which, funnily enough, are taken from a little known Nine Inch Nails instrumental track, leaving this song with the rather amusing distinction of having a Nine Inch Nails song-writing credit. It is sprinkled with ear-catching moments throughout, my favourite being the first “YYYYEEEEAAHHHH!”, the vocal harmonies of “RIIIDDDEEE!” at the end, and also the beat coming back during Cyrus’ verse (“Got no stress…”).

A cultural phenomenon for the ages, and a totally deserved one at that.

3.Ghost – Mary On A Cross

If you read my year-end list in 2019, you would already be familiar with Ghost. But if you aren’t already, I would like to introduce you.

The most entertaining band going around, who have reached new heights with the more glam-rock/hard-rock songs they have released in the past few years, have delivered their most emotionally resonant and satisfying song yet with “Mary On A Cross”.

Blazing down some exhilarating avenues, it is a rollercoaster, with expressive vocal delivery (“RIDING HIGH!”), playful lyrics (I have seen more than a few people interpret the title as “Marijuana Cross”, rather than what the song is actually titled) and a sing-a-long chorus. The raspy vocal delivery does the song (and band) a world of favours. I just love it, personally.

Admittedly, it was the other song on “Seven Inches of Satanic Panic” which I preferred originally (which I will get to later), but this ended up coming out on top.

At this point, it would almost compete with “Rats” as my favourite song of theirs. It won’t take the mantle, but don’t let that take anything away from this song.

If you’re not listening to Ghost already, hop to it!

4.Foals – Black Bull

I have a soft spot for Foals. Though I wouldn’t say they have ever released a full project which I have liked from back-to-front, they put out a kick-ass single more often than not. Exhibit A of that is right here.

Every lead single they release for a new project always seems to be killer, but this may have just been their best lead-off single yet, and this is for a band that released two albums in 2019.

It was a pleasant surprise to hear Foals take their sound in a harder, uncompromising direction with “Black Bull”, and an absolute ride to hear Philippakis show blatant disregard for his own vocals by yelling out every line over the song’s 3-minute duration, especially so for a touring musician.

You get 30-odd seconds before we get into the guts of the song, but once it has you in its grip, it doesn’t relinquish it. The head-banging riffs and crescendos are enough to leave you breathless by the song’s conclusion.

Straight forward stoner rock which just gets the job done.

5.Danny Brown – Dirty Laundry

Originally, I didn’t think this would land this high, but the more I got into it, I couldn’t deny it.

Yes, here lies the wonderful story of Danny having sexual relations with a morbidly obese woman in the public bathroom of a fast food restaurant, in a way that only Danny Brown can tell it.

It must be said, this is a different sound for him, something more colourful and synthetic, but in the best possible way. It is delivered with his unique sense of urgency and vocal timbre, yet it is completely engaging in his typical inimitable fashion.

My favourite moment lyrically is Danny trying to convince himself that this woman wasn’t as overweight as he originally thought (“300 pounds, maybe more like 280/ Had a couple babies, 270 give or take it”), as well as some laundry wordplay worked into the back-end of the track.

And despite Danny painting a rather ugly picture of the situation (and of the woman in question), the story still draws you in.

Also, THAT BEAT DROP! Believe it or not, Q-Tip, yes Q-Tip, is on the production, which is nuts for a track that sounds like this.

An alluring and enticing pivot in sound which works an absolute treat.

6.Plastic Toy & DJ Snake – Try Me

This song is just a mood. Just put the headphones on, turn the volume up high, and let yourself be transported to another planet.

There is just something about this song which hits me where it hurts, and it is easily the most I’ve been enraptured by a DJ Snake production.

And this Plastic Toy character, I don’t know what to make of them, seeing as they only have three songs on their Spotify. Maybe they play a greater role in the moody, sadder direction of this song? Or is it just a spin-off character for DJ Snake? I don’t really know, nor is it of much importance here.

The “vocal” track (“ooh aah eeh ooh ahh – what what what what”) sounds like someone trying to get their emotions out in a void, but instead of having the words to be able to articulate their feelings, they are letting the sounds come out directly from their soul, which is then followed-up in a lovely fashion by a sentimental, but bouncy piano/synth (I think), and a piano track which cuts through the mix at just the right moments.

Words fail me a bit on this one, and it makes me wish I knew music theory better, so I truly had words to describe how I feel about particular elements of this track.

I’ll just say - In a word: mesmerising. A perfect festival tune for a “chill/sad” day out.

7.Mark Ronson – Find U Again [feat. Camila Cabello]

Hands down, this is my favourite Mark Ronson song. And it’s not even a competition.

With a song that best captures “Late Night Feelings”, from the project of the same name, we score some absolute production magic from Ronson (why would I expect anything less by this point?), with those slick 80’s electropop touches and flourishes working an absolute treat.

But much to my surprise, it is Cabello that takes this track to the next level. Even if there is some vocal processing going on here, this is my favourite vocal melody of 2019 by far (my favourite moments being “and I remember YOU TOLD ME”, “and now the TEARS IN YOUR EYES make it blurry” and “it’s too late, IT’S TOO LAAAATTTEEE”, but then again, every hook is just so sticky and memorable here).

Yet, it is more than just the melody which makes it work. It’s the fact that Cabello really sells the emotion here of knowing that you had the perfect person and now you’re left wondering not only if you will meet them again, but if you will ever have any interaction with them again at all, even if you spent your whole life looking for them. “Find U Again” really made me feel that and packed that emotional wallop.

This could have been higher to be truthful. The only time it stumbles is during the second verse, where the lyrics are a bit suss (“I messed up to the third degree/ This crush is kind of crushing me/ I do therapy at least twice a week”). Don’t get me wrong, these moments are still catchy, and still fit in with the theme of the song, I just think it could have been reworked a bit. With improvements here, it easily could have been in the top 3.

In saying that, everything else here is basically a 10/10, almost impossibly perfect. It may now be the only late-night “sad” song I will ever need.

8.Foals – The Runner

That riff. I just can’t say no to that riff. It just jumps into the good stuff straight away and doesn’t let up.

Once again, a convincing performance by Philippakis (dude is underrated as hell) and one that would get a crowd going (“OOHHH, IF I FALL DOWN…”).

Top moment here is following the first chorus, where it slows down for a brief moment, before the riff comes back in, as well as the outro, which gives “The Runner” the fitting end that it deserves.

Every passage is a winner, and “The Runner” surely is one of the most thrilling rock tracks of 2019.

9.Ghost – Kiss The Go-Goat

Did I say earlier that Ghost is the most entertaining band going around and that you should start listening to them straight away? If you missed that, here is another timely reminder.

This is their loosest song so far and could easily see this going off at a live show. With its psych-rock influences, and a small nod to “go-go” music with the title, there is just a free-wheeling energy here, most fittingly captured in the awesome solo.

I did learn guitar back in the day and listening to a song like this makes me consider revisiting it. In the meantime, air guitaring to the solo is working a treat.

If you like you rock music fun and free, don’t look past this.

10.Vampire Weekend – Unbearably White

I had a hard time choosing between #10 and #11, as to which should make my top 10, but I did want a Vampire Weekend song to be up there, and I wanted it to be this one. And the more I reflect on it, the more I know I made the right decision.

“Unbearably White” is intricately detailed, both lyrically and musically, in the way that the best Vampire Weekend songs are.

The use of the colour white throughout the song really captures the feeling of being cold, both physically and emotionally, where it sounds like Ezra and the rest of the VW crew are trying to work their way through relationship and musical difficulties, and only end up drawing blanks, just deciding to blame it on the world being the way it is, signalling a rather gloomy outlook on the world, which I can certainly relate to at times.

Dramatic moments are found wedged between the beauty, such as the dramatic sound of the music “crashing” between the first and second verses, the slowing down during the chorus just to let you soak the content in, and the strings between the chorus and third verse that add that extra emotional potency. There are nice embellishments here-and-there too (the “yoo-hoo’s” at the end standing out).

During the depressing moments of reflection, “Unbearably White” feels like a juxtaposition of conflicting feelings, a mix between a daydream, with its sunny and bright musical composition, and a nightmare, with the circumstances faced in the lyrics.

When you listen to this song at the right moment, it can really overwhelm you. And for that, I give it the highest credit.

THE BEST SONGS OF 2020

After the year that was 2020, I let my end-of-year commentary for the 2019 list drag on until bloody SEPTEMBER. I’m not going to let the same thing happen this year.

But in letting the commentary publication get released until that late in the year, is there anything I can really add which I didn’t already say last time? I’ll give it a go.

2020 started off for me like most other years. Working in events, the summer concert and sporting carnivals were in full swing right away, and by the time that had all cooled down about 4-5 weeks later, I was due back to my full-time job in February. With everything going on, I honestly wondered if I was ever going to find the time to slow down a bit. Little did I know that that slow down would hit very abruptly only about 7 weeks later, for obvious reasons that are in no way unique to me.

Now while I must stress that I did not lose that job, I did have to find alternative work for the rest of the year, with my new job being right on the other side of town, which was not ideal. That was also only made worse when my car broke down in August and I had to fork out tens of thousands of dollars to get a new one.

And even with all that happening, I lost three of the most important people in my life in the first 5 months of the year, and when you combine everything, I think you can understand why my 2019 commentary came late.

And among all that, there was the mundanity of lockdown experienced throughout much of the world, and just this general sadness that lingered throughout the year. All the usual escapes were no longer possible – bars, clubs, cinemas, travel etc. And even if they were available, they were mostly in a significantly diminished capacity.

But there was one escape that still held strong – music.

Yeah, I’ll say it. 2020 was honestly a pretty great year for music, even the mainstream stuff, despite some artists delaying or even cancelling releases due to there being no chance of touring immediately afterwards.

Just looking at my top 100 specifically, I think this might be the strongest crop of 100 songs I have put together out of any of my lists. There are so many songs in that 101-120 range which I was certain would have made the top 100 but didn’t end up making it. Many of those songs would have easily filled out the 81-100 positions in previous years, but this year they still had to just miss out on one of those coveted spots.

This, however, may be in large part due to my new working situation. While working on the other side of town may have meant less free time at home, it did mean I was listening to even more music than I was in other years. Heck, when I had to buy my new car, it resulted in getting a car with a much-improved speaker system as well, meaning that maybe there was a silver lining to it all.

Yes, 2020 was a bad year. An awful year. The worst year of my lifetime, and it is no contest. But at the end of the day, I still have a list here that I’m really happy with.

And while some good music doesn’t balance out or make-up for the worst stuff that happened in 2020 (my commentary really only scratches the surface), it was my main respite in a tough year, and cathartic in its own way. It is a list that I’m happy to share with you all.

Anyway, without carrying on any longer, here is the list:

1.Juice WRLD – Wishing Well

I’m a little surprised by this one as well.

I will be the first to say that I was never the biggest fan of Juice, but I think he showed a lot of potential at times. The song of his this mostly reminds me of this is “Robbery”, but a version of it that were improved upon in almost every way, particularly with the bittersweet-sounding instrumentation and pleading vocals.
(P.S. That is not a dig at that track in any way. It was probably my favourite song of his pre-2020, and my favourite track off of “Death Race For Love”).

Speaking about the instrumentation, everything is immaculate here. The gorgeous piano line, the inclusion of guitar, the little sighs Juice does at the beginning of the track. And who could forget the Dragon Ball Z blast sound effect?

And on the subject matter itself, it might be one of his hardest songs to listen to, especially when you pay close attention. The analogies of not being able to breathe, carrying stress and trying when failure is inevitable are analogies I feel many could relate to in 2020. There are few songs that better capture the mood of 2020.

I’m not going to pretend that this track is the most poetically written or complex, but given Juice’s fate, and combining that with his desperate vocal delivery, it really makes lines like “I cry out for help, do they listen? / I’ma be alone until it’s finished” and “I stopped taking the drugs and now the drugs take me” hit with a real dramatic force.

In reflection, I wonder, for anyone that knew Juice personally, whether it be his family, friends, producers, music personnel etc., when listening to this track following his passing, ever listened back to it and wondered if there was anything they could have done differently, or if there was a sign they could have reacted to, which could have changed his lifepath, and then came to that tragic realisation all too late. In a year like 2020, that feeling was all too prevalent.

I feel Juice really captures that internal conflict that comes with fame with the lines of “If it wasn’t for the pills, I wouldn’t be here / But if I keep taking these pills, I won’t be here”. It does make me think that maybe he was trying to move away from that type of lifestyle, but because he made his name off portraying that in his music, he thought that if he were to take another direction, it wouldn’t resonate with his fans so much, so he stuck to what he knew to his own detriment. It is a sad position that I can see many artists, especially the very popular ones, finding themselves in, but I’ve never heard those feelings so miserably expressed in a mainstream song like this.

Despite all this, it was a fan favourite for a reason (previously leaked under the title “Lauryn Hill”). Without question, this is my favourite vocal melody of Juice’s career and of 2020 overall. It is one of those desperately tragic and melancholic songs where the emotion cuts deep, but the track itself still has amazing replay value.

Most definitely a high note to go out on. I can’t speak highly of it enough. R.I.P Juice.

2.The Weeknd – In Your Eyes

I was honestly considering this for the #1 spot, and it was probably was the frontrunner until the last couple of days of 2020.

The first time I heard this certainly made the right first impression and it ultimately became my go-to pick-me-up song throughout 2020. I was listening to the radio at 3am while driving to work with absolutely no one else on the road, and it was honestly the best way I could have been introduced to the song. Much like his suitably-titled album “After Hours”, this is perfect to listen to in the late night/early morning.

“In Your Eyes” contains the perfect blend of 80’s elements, from the synthesizer to Abel’s spot-on vocals. I mean, the electronic elements and groove here are so perfect in a way that is almost impossible to describe. But then when the saxophone solo comes in at the back-end, it is just the cherry on top. Make no mistakes, Max Martin still has the Midas touch.

What also appeals to me about this is that it feels like a moment of emotional maturity and clarity for Abel. It feels like the first time I have heard him convincingly communicate seeing someone whose life he has impacted in some way and feeling some level of guilt or remorse, while still having the song remain danceable and likable.

Out of the many popular artists that are trying to revive the 80’s, The Weeknd is head-and-shoulders the best of everyone right now (and I’m including Dua Lipa in that conversation, who would be a comfortable #2). It is just incredible how seamlessly he can slide his character and personality into songs like this and “Blinding Lights” (a song which grew on me enormously throughout 2020, and, as a result, also made this list).

While I may not be a fan of the Trilogy, and have a really strong distaste for songs like “The Hills” (still one of the worst hits of the 2010s btw) and his other “darker” R&B songs, when he made that transition to becoming a mainstream pop artist and scored hits like “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Starboy”, I couldn’t deny the man any longer, and I honestly feel he might be one of the best popstars going around. I mean, who is providing an image as slick as his, while simultaneously providing hits of the highest quality? No one else comes close, and I’m happy to have him around.

Unfortunately, it seems that this didn’t really catch on like “Heartless” or “Blinding Lights” did, which is a shame, because this is my favourite song on the album.

That’s not to say that the radio didn’t give it a good, old crack, as I felt like I heard this a lot for a song that only peaked at #13 on the Australian charts, and received remixes featuring Doja Cat (which added a different element to the track, but didn’t necessarily improve it) and Kenny G of all people (who didn’t really change the original track much, if at all). But sometimes your favourite songs don’t become massive hits, and I can accept that.

Despite saying that, it is staggering to believe that The Weeknd didn’t receive any Grammy nominations this year given his popularity and music quality in 2020, and I know I’m not alone in that camp. It just would have been nice to see, is all.

With the high quality of singles he keeps churning out, I feel like he is going to score a #1 EOY spot with me eventually. Between “Can’t Feel My Face” (2015 #3), “Starboy” (2016 #4) and now this, it seems like it will be only a matter of time.

And while we’re on the topic of The Weeknd…

3.The Weeknd – Save Your Tears

Yeah, I had to include this one too.

I know I’m sounding like a broken record here, but this was in the mix for the top spot as well, but if I ever put it ahead of “In Your Eyes”, it was only briefly and mainly during the sadder moments of the year. But that’s not to take away from how brilliant this song is in its own right.

While I do have much less to say about this one when compared to “In Your Eyes”, it is another one of those depressive, but pop-leaning tracks that I cannot get enough of.

And this song also adds another chapter of emotional complexity to himself as an artist, of a man that honestly doesn’t know why he acts the way he acts sometimes, of understanding that it is better for both him and his ex-lovers to remain separated so they can get on with their lives, and that losing someone like The Weeknd, from the woman’s perspective, is not worth crying over, even if that isn’t the instinctual reaction. If you’re going to cry, you should be crying over losing someone much better than him. It is the sort-of admission that I never would have expected from him, and shows him making real strides as an artist. And as much as he says he might want to stay, his broken and saddened delivery knows that doing that is not for the best.

The music just perfectly fits the downbeat vibe of the song too, but my favourite moments come in the second half of the song, mainly during the last refrain, where the instrumental gets stripped back while he sings “I don’t know why I run away / I’ll make you cry when I run away”, which just allows that emotion to fester, as well as the vocoder vocals that come in towards the end of the song. I know Abel has worked with Daft Punk on quite a few tracks, and I wonder if their working together had any influence on this musical decision.

In a year that many of us wanted to save our tears for another day, this is just another example of a song that captured the mood of 2020.
(P.S. I know that I keep going on about how sad 2020 was, but honestly, I’m feeling good. I know the commentary may suggest otherwise, but I’m trying to explain why these songs really clicked for me in 2020 specifically).

And Max Martin produced this one as well? Well, what else can I say? The man can do no wrong.

4.KennyHoopla – how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway?//

On the topic of sadder songs, here comes another one, but this time with a punk rock attitude.

Having had Spotify since late 2016, I like how much new music it has introduced me to, and given I had more time to spare, I was able to get through more New Music Friday playlists, from beginning to end, to uncover more music that I otherwise wouldn’t have listened to.

Now, if I’m being completely honest, that can be quite an unrewarding slog. I’d say at least 90% of the songs I listen to on New Music Friday I never come back around to for a second listen, and I just find a lot of it forgettable.

Heck, looking at my last.fm statistics, and then combining it with what I have heard on the radio, on SoundCloud and on YouTube, I listened to approximately 10,000 songs in 2020, and I only listened to 2,165 of those songs more than once, and most of those songs were songs I liked from before 2020. Most of the single-listen songs were new release songs from 2020. (I’ll try and stop saying “songs” for the rest of this portion of the commentary).

But sometimes listening through a few hundred duds is worth it when you find that one gem. And “how will i rest in peace if i’m buried by a highway?//” was that gem, providing that harsh energy I needed to counterbalance the more downbeat, sombre tracks of 2020.

As many others have observed, this song, and Kenny himself, are reminiscent of “Silent Alarm” era Bloc Party, but if the vocalist was a bit rawer and more unrestrained.

Honestly, that was the first hurdle I faced in enjoying the song, trying to swallow his rough vocals, but once I was over that barrier, there was no looking back.

And the track just hits the right balance between the harder choruses and the softer verses. The cool downs in the verses pack the choruses with that much more of a wallop, and the riffs just add so much energy to the experience.

There is seemingly a lot of hype surrounding this guy in the punk scene, and it is easy to see why. One to keep an eye out for, and if you are into your Post-Punk Revivalism with a bit of a Dance-Punk and emo edge, then look no further.

5.Gunna – SKYBOX

After experiencing “SKYBOX”, I can say I have heard the future, and the future sounds amazing.

And yes, it is GUNNA of all people that made this song. GUNNA. GUNNA! Sorry, I just had to repeat that to myself a few times, because it barely makes sense even to me.

This is the same guy that made the sleep-inducing projects “Drip Harder” and “Drip Or Drown 2”? I’m not saying those projects are without highlights (just look at my previous end-of-year lists), but I’ve never seen his name attached to anything this good or futuristic.

You might think I’m being charitable here, but I do like Gunna’s languid and laidback performance on this track. It’s like he’s rapping through a dream, spitting out braggadocio in-between daydreaming about being a GOAT and having sex with a genie in a castle in the sky. It is the ideal balance for a Gunna song, where the music and lyrics/performance complement each other wonderfully.

What makes this song work more than Gunna though is a certain producer that goes by the name of Taurus. I don’t know how he did it, but he sonically captured the feeling of euphoria, where you are high-as-all-hell with your head floating the clouds, but you can also take the time to relax and reflect on what you have achieved in the game.

Where songs like “Speed It Up” had more of an aquatic theme, Taurus seems to elevated Gunna up into the clouds, and I have to admire Taurus for being able to sonically capture the elements so well.

Now, I know that Gunna isn’t the first person to make a song like this, and I feel the sound is very much inspired by what the Drain Gang members and Yung Lean have put together (I believe the term is “Vaportrap”), but only an improvement on that, and if it were made more accessible.

I never thought I would see the day where Gunna makes my top 10 in an EOY list, with a solo song no less, but I’m happy to say that Gunna has been improving. If he is in the skybox right now, I want to see him take it even higher.

I really enjoy that music video as well. One of my favourites of 2020.

6.Orville Peck – Summertime

I know you may have had to do a double take when seeing this here, but you didn’t read that incorrectly. A true-blue country song in my top 10!

Well, maybe not country in the traditional sense, but as close to it as I have ever gotten. This song is closer to Alt-Country, or even Gothic Country, but it does such a good job at twisting what you would expect from your standard country song.

The first thing I recognised about “Summertime” on first listen is just how good the production on this song is. The sound quality was so impeccable, that I almost didn’t really listen to the song itself. I added it to a playlist I have of songs that are worthy of another listen, but I see potential in liking.

Now, I’ve been using this process for the last 5 years now, but most of the time, those songs tend to fall in the 151-200 range, and just end up being good, but never reaching up to that next level. But Peck managed to buck that trend with style.

The picture “Summertime” paints in my mind is one of being near my loved ones, out in the country (which is strange, because I’m definitely more of a city guy) on a picture perfect summer’s evening, making lifelong memories just between us. It would be a simple life, but I wouldn’t want it to be anything else.

It just makes me nostalgic. Not only does it make me nostalgic about summers past, but also summers I haven’t even experienced yet. If that makes sense.

And the atmosphere created is in large part due to his deep voice. It is so campy, yet so resonant. The way he sings that very final “WE’LL BE RIDIN’ ALLLLLLLL NIIIIIGHHHHT” is just so… majestic.

I saw someone else say that if you just give this a chance, it will become a part of you, and sure enough, that is what happened to me.

Given I liked much of the work Mr Peck put out this year (as evidenced by some other entries on this list), I’m looking forward to what he has on the horizon in the future.

But even if we don’t get another song to the quality of “Summertime”, at least he’ll always have this magic moment.

7.The Killers – Caution

I feel that I was dudded.

The Killers, one of my favourite bands, announce a new album, “Imploding The Mirage”. The title sounds transcendent, the cover art looks like a thing of beauty.

And then came the glorious first single, “Caution”. I couldn’t believe it. I wouldn’t say it is my favourite song of theirs, but it would be top 10 for sure.

Then I thought, if this is what they are leading the album with, this album could be some of their best work ever. I was certain that there would be more than a handful of tracks from the album make my year-end list.

Five months, and a few more singles later, the album comes out, and I didn’t latch on to any other song. It just felt like a middling and underwhelming effort, and as a result, this is the only song of theirs to make my list this year. But at least it is a really bloody good one.

Blending New Wave and Heartland Rock elements, “Caution” just makes me wish everything was open and going as normal, because if it were, I would have loved to have gone out into the world in 2020 and lived fearlessly, using this song as my soundtrack, but alas, it was not to be. I have no doubt though that that time will still come, and it will become the soundtrack to the life that I want to live.

The sing-a-long chorus hits really well, making this one of their best choruses in a while (and given their catalogue, that is saying quite a bit).

It was also my dad’s favourite (current) song upon his passing, which means it will always have that extra sentimental value for me too.

But even without that, it would still be top 10.

Altogether, with the sweeping synths (you can tell that the War on Drugs was involved in production), awe-inspiring lyrics and Flowers’ captivating performance behind the mic, I know this is going to send the crowds crazy when concerts return.

8.Oliver Tree – Bury Me Alive

If you were to catch a glimpse of me in real life, you probably wouldn’t be surprised to find out that I am quite fond of Oliver Tree.

It is hard not to be fascinated by his image and personality, but his music is quite different to what his image would suggest. Or perhaps I should say his lyrics are less jokey than it would appear.

I’ve enjoyed a few of his tracks over the years, but things seemed to be getting a bit stale leading up to “Bury Me Alive”.

While I did enjoy his formula for the most part, when he released “Let Me Down” as a single before this (a song I still enjoy, despite what I say here, and was eventually spiced up with a blink-182 remix), it felt like I was experiencing a severe case of déjà vu. I was starting to think that he has already reached his artistic ceiling, and that he was perhaps a bit more limited as a musician than I had hoped. And then he drops this and completely blows my expectations out-of-the-water.

In saying that, “Ugly Is Beautiful” still lacks variety, but this is the clear standout.

It is a welcome departure from his usual sound. It is great to hear him mixing his rock sound up with a little reggae twist, and some hard-hitting Boom Bap-style verses. Those verses really get your head bobbing along.

While he is supposedly retired (not sure how legit this is), I’m happy that he still got a great track out before he decided to pursue other ventures. Definitely his most instant and unique song.

9.Lil Yachty – Oprah’s Bank Account [feat. DaBaby & Drake]

Here are three artists that have given me conflicting feelings over the years.

Lil Yachty was a breath of fresh air a few years back with his immature cloud rap, but never seemed to really progress. Drake, remaining as popular as ever, just seems to be going through the motions at this point, and hasn’t put together a body of work with substance for many years now. DaBaby, who I generally do like, just can’t seem to release many singles which I can truly get behind.

Luckily, with “Oprah’s Bank Account”, a track where the trio try complimenting a girl’s attractiveness in comparison to Oprah’s bank account, which is a ridiculous enough concept that makes it so fun to get behind, finds all three in career-best form.

This is Drake’s most magnetising performance of 2020 by a long way, and DaBaby’s presence is very much welcome. Altogether, the three artists provide very different energies to one another, and they work with each other so well. It’s a vibe.

And on the matter of Drake, while his work has been more miss than hit in the last few years, I’m pleased that he still has the capacity to use his powers for good sometimes, and get a song like this in the Billboard Hot 100.

From Yachty’s standpoint, this sounds like a logical evolution of his sound. While the rest of “Lil Boat 3” didn’t live up to the hype generated by this song, there are ideas I like throughout the project, but this song is where the ideas manifest best.

When you hear how he has progressed from “Lil Boat” onwards, this feels like a natural progression. Still dreamy and immature, but a smoother sound and honestly a little funnier. I mean, just even seeing the song title on its own is enough to capture my attention.

Another track with a dream-like quality that has an amazing music video (if I’m being honest, this music video is even better than “SKYBOX”).

The real question now is, what does Oprah think about all this?

10.24kGoldn – Mood [feat. iann dior]

It only makes sense that even our fun pop songs in 2020 have a gloomy undercurrent to them. Just the way it should be. Bubblegum-emo-trap, if that is even a thing.

As I love mentioning in my year-end commentaries, this comfortably ended up being my most streamed song of 2020, and for good reason. Actually, when you look at my listens overall, across all platforms, this was the song I listened to most in 2020, and it only came out later in the year.

At the start of my commentary, I talked about working an alternative job for much of 2020, and at this job, they would play the radio station Hit Urban. Even before this became a hit, this was one of the songs they had on heavy rotation, and I was hooked immediately.

While I wouldn’t say I enjoyed the job all that much, hearing this song in the rotation for a couple of months before it really blew up was one of the highlights of my working day. After hearing it those first few times, I had to find out the name of the song immediately, and sure enough, it became my most streamed song of 2020.

I just find it insane as well that despite having heard this 200-odd times, I still haven’t gotten sick of it. Heck, sometimes I listen to it and then have to listen to it a second time because the first time just wasn’t enough.

What makes it such a joy is that it is a song which leans into the fun of its own ideas. It might be set in the middle of a relationship where communication has stagnated, but between the earworm chorus and bouncy, bright guitar line, it shows that maybe if you take the problem head-on, those problems can be solved and you can enjoy that process as well.

It is a song which is ultimately critic-proof. No matter what way I could slice-and-dice it, it was instant, charismatic and easy to love. And without question, the most deserving hit of 2020.

It is short, but it doesn’t need to be any longer. It gets in, it gets out, and it gets the job done.

A large reason it works though is because the hook is just undeniable. Most pop artists spend their entire careers trying to write a hook as sticky as this, and the fact that 24kGoldn did it this early in his career is like literally striking gold (pun intended). Make no mistake, this is the best hook of 2020, and there is nothing even close.

You might be wondering with my commentary why this isn’t even higher.

Truth be told, I will say the song is on the simpler side, and I’m not going to pretend it’s a game-changer either, but for what it is, it is absolutely superb.

Given the trends we have seen in popular music, I haven’t liked many songs that have blown up off Tik Tok (see “Savage Love”, “Supalonely” etc.), or have been specifically engineered to appeal to their general audience (see “Yummy”, “Toosie Slide” etc.) but between this and “Old Town Road”, this is the second year in a row where my favourite hit song has largely achieved its success through the platform, so I’m not mad at all. I could sit through 50 “Yummies” if it meant we got one “Mood”.

And If he can stack “El Dorado” with tracks that hit as instantly as this, then I’m hoping 24kGoldn sticks around.
