Meghan Trainor was in Australia during the past week on a promo tour, appearing on many shows, including a live performance on The X-Factor on Monday night, plus her new EP “Title” was out this week too, which all adds up to her song “All About That Bass” climbing back to the top of the ARIA Singles chart this week, for a fourth non-consecutive week, plus it picks up a third ▲Platinum certification in the process.
“Bass” is only the second song this year to reclaim the top spot, as “Happy” by Pharrell Williams went back to the top in February after week off the No.1 spot. Taylor Swift drops back down to No.2 with “Shake it off”, but she will be in the country in a couple of weeks (also appearing on XF) to promote her new album ‘1989’, so the song could climb back to the top. Leaping to a new peak of No.3 is “Freaks” for Timmy Trumpet and Savage, which becomes the second top three single for Savage, whom peaked at No.2 back in January on the Joel Fletcher track “Swing”.
X-Factor judge Redfoo drops back a place to No.4 with “New Thang”, whilst the other performer on this weeks’ X-Factor was local singer Nathaniel, who sang his new song “Live Louder” on the show, and this week that song leaps up seventeen places to land at No.5, which becomes his second Top 5 and Top 10 single, as his other entry to the ten was “You” which peaked at No.4 in mid-October 2013.
Dropping two places to No.6 is the trio of Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande with “Bang Bang” and back up one place to No.7 is Klingande with “Jubel”, whilst also down are G.R.L. with “Ugly Heart” and “Budapest” for George Ezra, both songs dropping three places to No.8 and No.9 respectively. Another of last weeks entries also leaps into the Top 10 this week, Calvin Harris and John Newman are up nine places to No.10 with “Blame” (the new UK No.1 single this week). It becomes the Scottish DJ’s eighth Top 10 single in Australia and the third for John, who was last in the Top 10 this time last year with his first solo entry (and second entry to the ten) “Love Me Again” (HP-4).
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Nicki Minaj is back up a place to No.11 with her “Anaconda”, whilst climbing to new peaks within the Top 20 are Echosmith with “Cool Kids” (#16), Sam Smith and “I’m Not the Only One” (#17) and “All About You” for Hilary Diff (#20). Becky G is up six places to a new peak of No.21 with “Shower” and climbing back up six places to No.31 is “Maps” (HP-30) for Maroon 5, which the X-Factor contestant performed in a group number this week. Gabrielle Aplin is down to No.39 with “Please Don’t Say You Love Me” and down eleven to No.44 is Charli XCX with “Boom Clap”, followed by Eminem and Sia who drop ten places to No.45 with “Guts Over Fear”. Falling out of the Top 50 this week are Dami Im with “Gladiator” (now Gold ●) (36 to 51), “Stay High” by Tove Lo (46 to 52), “Waves” for Mr. Probz (48 to 53) and “Mess is Mine” by Vance Joy (41 to 60).
English Drum N’ Bass duo Sigma score the highest new entry this week, by debuting at No.19 with their second chart entry here “Changing”, which features Paloma Faith as guest vocalist. They peaked at No.11 in late June with “Nobody to Love”, the song is sitting at No.69 this week.
Ed Sheeran returns to the Top 100 at No.41 with the third single from his ‘x’ (TW-10) album entitled “Thinking out Loud”, the song having previously charted in late June reaching No.78 for a single week, but now it’s the official third track lifted from his album, becoming his eleventh Top 100 and Top 50 entry here in the process. The final entry for the fifty comes in at No.46, The Vamps with Sean Mendes and the song “Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart)”, which becomes the bands fifth Top 100 and fourth Top 50 entry. This track uses the chorus from the Simon & Garfunkel song “Cecilia” (HP-6, peaked late June 1970).
Lower 50: Fall Out Boy climbs to a new peak of No.55 with “Centuries” and also up is The Madden Brothers with “Dear Jane” to No.57. From the TMNT-2014 film “Shell Shocked” for Juicy J leaps up twenty-four places to a new peak of No.72, whilst “Cosby Sweater” for The Hilltop Hoods is up five places to a new chart height of No.85. Alt-J returns with all three of their recent singles “Every Other Freckle” (#76), “Left Hand Free” (new Peak #80) and “Hunger of the Pine” (#83). Other re-entries come from Slipknot with “The Devil in I” (#91), “Love More” for Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj (#94; HP-29), “Latch” for Disclosure featuring Sam Smith, and Meg Mac with “Roll Up Your Sleeves” (#97).
To coincide with her national tour with Andrea Bocelli, Delta Goodrem has covered the Martika October 1991 No.1 single “Love... Thy Will Be Done”, which comes in at No.59 and becomes her first entry for 2014 and her 23rd chart entry overall. Another local act, EDM duo Flight Facilities enter at No.67 with their fourth Top 100 chart entry “Two Bodies”, which features Emma Louise as guest vocalist, which becomes her second entry too.
Swedish DJ Alessandro Lindblad is better know as Alesso, and he teams up with fellow country-woman Tove Lo for his new single “Heroes (We Could be)”, which comes in at No.70 and becomes her second entry and his third, although it’s Alesso’s first lead single, as he previously charted as the guest on the Calvin Harris track “Under Control” (HP-17, Oct 2013) and the remixer of the OneRepublic track “If I Lose Myself” (HP-14, Feb 2014). Kid Ink teams with Usher and Tinashe for the No.77 entry “Body Language”, which also becomes his first lead entry, but third overall entry, as Kid has appeared on two previous Chris Brown tracks “Show Me” (HP-46, peaked Jan 2014) and “Main Chick” (HP-86, Feb 2014).
The ninth chart entry for local DJ Havana Brown comes in at No.81 entitled “Better Not Said”, and X-Factor entries this week are only three, two of which are by local contestants. Firstly coming in at No.87 is Marlisa Punzalan at No.87 with her cover of the Metallica song “Nothing Else Matters”, whilst Dean Ray who drops from 15 to 43 with his version of “Budapest”, he is also new at No.90 with his rendition of the INXS song “New Sensation”. Sandwiched in-between those two locals, is an act from the 2013 USA edition of X-Factor, couple Alex and Sierra; who placed third last year, and they debut at No.89 with their first single “Scarecrow”.
The brothers Joel and Benji Madden, known as The Madden Brothers enter at the top of the ARIA Albums chart with their debut album “Greetings from California”, which becomes the boys’ second chart-topper, as their former band Good Charlotte spent a week at the top almost ten years ago with “The Chronicles of Life and Death”, which spent a week at the top on 11-October-2004.
“Greetings from California” becomes the 715th No.1 album in Australia (1965 to 2014) and the 566th for ARIA (1983 to 2014), whilst its also the 364th album to debut at No.1 here, plus the eighteenth album to enter at the top of the ARIA Albums chart this year, plus it’s also the fifteenth No.1 album for the Capitol record label, and the second this year as the self-titled album for 5 Seconds of Summer was the other back in early July.
It’s the sixth No.1 album with the word ‘from’ in its title, whilst it’s the first ‘Greetings’ to make it to the top (the previous highest ‘Greetings’ to chart was Bruce Springsteen’s first album “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.”, which finally charted in 1985 reaching No.71). It’s the second album with ‘California’ in its title to reach the top, the other being The Eagles back in January 1977 with “Hotel California” which stayed atop for twelve straight weeks.
The Madden Brothers’ album is the 259th by an American act to hit No.1 here in Australia, and the eighth this year, and the brothers are the 143rd American Act to reach the top, plus they become the eleventh duo to hit the top of the ARIA Albums chart, plus the fourth duo from America, the other three being Simon & Garfunkel, The Carpenters and earlier this year MKTO. So far “Greetings from California” has charted two singles, “We are Done” (HP-1, TW-28) and new single “Dear Jane” (TW-57).
Landing his second successive No.2 debut is Slash, again with Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, who all debut with their new set “World on Fire”. At the end of May 2012 they debuted and peaked at No.2 with “Apocalyptic Love”, with this new set becoming the third Top 10 and fifth Top 100 entry for Slash. Rising back up three places to No.3 is Sam Smith (current UK No.1 album) with “In the Lonely Hour”, and dropping back down two places to No.4 is Jimmy Barnes with his recent No.1 “30:30 Hindsight”.
The third and final Top 10 debut comes in at No.5, Megan Washington with her second album “There There”. It also becomes her second Top 5 album, as her August 2010 set “I Believe You Liar” debuted and peaked at No.3. The XF performance of ‘New Sensation’ and the Channel 7 show on the passing of Michael Hutchence helps “The Very Best” for INXS back up to No.23 and thanks to his national tour, Robbie Williams’ “Swings Both Ways” leaps back up thirty-five places to No.25. The final new entry coming in at No.96 is the Latin and Cuban infused soundtrack to the film “Chef”.
360 had the iTunes album of the week so I expected a bigger jump. Considering how the album chart was this week, maybe a tougher week could have got him at #36...gr
