I was just getting a little tired of her being trotted out at every international event last year. And by every international even I obviously only mean the Commonwealth Games and Eurovision, but still if they pick her for this I feel it would be more about last chose than be innovative or whatnot.
I think whatever path they go, it would probably be best to go the Pop route, and possibly someone not too huge in Australia. But that doesn't mean Ricki-Lee producers.
I actually would love either Ricki-Lee or Samantha Jade to be chosen. Both are well suited to Eurovision and the European audience as well.
Obviously Mauboy would be my first choice. Sea Of Flags was never going to be a song that blew people away or became a hit in Europe. I'm hoping if she were to compete she would make a more upbeat, hit-sounding song. But any one of the three ladies I just mentioned would be perfect. Just not Guy Sebastian pls. Also, some people mentioning Sia, I mean seriously? Ridiculous choice.
I just hope the organisers decide to choose something interesting and risky rather than being safe. I couldn't deal with another Sea of Flags bs. I don't think we could do a ballad either or that wouldn't do anything.
I am liking the chances for Samantha Jade and Dami too, but to me they're still a little 'safe,' and their songs will have to be darn good. Dami would only just get away with a ballad imo.
Jessica Mauboy would be fine too but wouldn't people think: "isn't she the same girl from last year?????"
What I would really want is a left-field indie-pop band that would just do very well with an extremely catchy tune. I reckon something like Geronimo would be perfect. Now of course we can't pick already released songs...but how perfect would Beware The Dog be???
Alison Wonderland Andy Bull Chet Faker Chris Sorbello Dami Im Daniel Johns Elen Levon Gossling Guy Sebastian Havana Brown Jessica Mauboy Kim Churchill Kimbra Marlisa Meg Mac Megan Washington Nathaniel Prinnie Ricki-Lee Samantha Jade San Cisco Sheppard Taylor Henderson The Preatures Thelma Plum Tkay Maidza Zoë Badwi
I know Mauboy started on idol which has been absent for a good couple of years now but Samantha Jade and Dami are from a show which is still around so I would imagine they would get overlooked based on network conflictions as I assume they are still somewhat linked with that station/channel.
I don't see them representing a show which will be on SBS.
I also thought there were rules that contestants who had previously won a music competiton which a record deal was given they weren't allowed to participate in EV. Don't know how much truth there is with that?
I think a band like Shephard would be great but am starting to think an unknown artist will be the choice.
I'd like for it to be Elen Levon because there's nothing seperating both she and Jess Mauboy IMO. Elen hasn't received the success that seemed imminent a couple of years back and participating in Eurovision would get her more awareness among the Australian public.
On the other hand I want something completely unique so I'd like for it to be San Cisco/Megan Washington/Lisa Mitchell/Kate Miller-Heidke.
No way would Chet Faker do something like that I imagine. I'd be surprised if it wasn't one of Sony's stable they seem to wheel out for all those random charity singles. Last edited:
It's also depending on the artist though, I seriously question if most of these JJJ artists (such as Chet Faker) would want to go on something like EV.
We can only hope that all of the JJJ artists are too snobbish to want to be part of the ESC. I'm hoping that our entrant is poptastic and/or trashtastic enough to suit the actual competition.
I didn't know Eurovision was that popular in Australia. The media here are speculating that Kylie Minogue could be your entry which is weird because countries with a big music scene usually send heir flop acts.
K8 - there are no rules forbidding acts who participated on Idol type shows from participating in Eurovision. In fact several countries often use an Idol style show to pick their contestant. Also pretty sure that Dami Im and Samanatha Jade's contracts with Seven expired long ago and they are free to appear on any station they want.
Tennis - there is no rule saying that the act has to be from the country they are representing. Many non-UK people have represented the UK in Eurovision (Olivia Newton-John, Gina G, Katrina & The Waves). Celine Dion represented Switzerland before she hit the big time.
Savagegrant - I agree with you, I think we need to send a poptastic artist.
Someone else will surely be able to answer better, but I always thought most countries usually picked someone unknown (or in that respect, not familiar to the charts, it's rather hard to know how 'unknown' they are unless we have a local precedent!), but a lot of people seem to be assuming Australia will treat it as a novelty and send out someone familiar or washed up, like the UK have been doing a lot lately.
Australia's music scene is such an oddity that it's hard to predict what would happen, even if it were to fall in line with one of those two extremes.
My Euro experience believes that most acts sent to Eurovision are known within their country. True some are true unknowns at the time of selection but many have a certain public awareness at the time of competition. Even ABBA was known in Sweden before they won Waterloo.
And Iggy Azalea would be a terrible fit for Eurovision. If it was USAvision I could see her being a potential pick, but for Europe not so much (Not discrediting any hits hse has had, but I feel her sound isn't very Eurovision). And honestly, I hope Australia doesn't send a joke entrant. We should be treating it as the honour that it has been presented to us as.
A lot of the national reps are Idol/XF etc finalists. Roughly half of the countries have televised pre-selections, most of the artists are known, at this stage the songwriters are possibly more well-known. The actual ESC entrants vary wildly from first timers to very well known artists (e.g. Bonnie Tyler).
Just a heads up for those that don't know, Australia apparently already takes part in an "Asiavision" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABU_TV_Song_Festival) where Havana Brown, Justice Crew & Dami Im have already represented, if that is an indication of what to expect as it is broadcast locally by SBS2.
Australian musicians named her as the best vocalist. She has paid her dues in the music industry and has an array different sounding songs. She has had success in Europe especially France.
If we get one moment to show our worth on a worldwide stage the decision of who is selected cannot be taken lightly. Selecting someone who is current especially from a recent reality show is not a wise choice.
I however believe they will select Jessica Mauboy based on her indigenous background & her overall standing past and present in Australia. There will be some who will jump on the "racist" bandwagon - this is another debate which I really have no interest in.
Also why is everyone mentioned solo? Do duo's groups not exist anymore?
Out of all countries that participate in the ESC UK has by far the biggest music scene and could probably win every year, but they send either unknown acts with rubbish songs or washed-up stars (those that were huge names in 70s or 80s) also with rubbish songs. It's as if they don't want to win, maybe because hosting the show is quite expensive. Other countries do send more prominent names, but it all comes down to the quality of the song and (more importantly) it's presentation (show>vocal performance tho) because superstar status in your own country rarely translates outside the borders of that country. Sweden is always a favorite, their national selection is like a holiday there and they put a lot of effort and money into it.
Australia has an advantage here because your big stars are very well known and could win on name (and half decent song) alone. I guess people expect from Australia to make a grand entrance and send a high profile act because that would bring more attention to the contest whose popularity is decreasing every year (It was an institution in the past decades, but most people now see it as a parade and describe it as camp). The concept of Eurovision will have to reinvent itself if it want's to maintain some relevancy in the future and Australian participation could do wonders; before it was common for the biggest stars to participate and ESC winner songs were global hits; the only one being close to that this century was Euphoria and even that was just a big Euro hit.
I'm curious to see how it will affect the voting dynamic which is stale and very predictable in over a decade.
I'd like to see Holly Valance making a return. Oh and Iggy just for the show. If anyone wants to know more about the show I'll do my best to help
Oh and I didn't know Hugh Jackman was a singer too?
I do agree that we're forgetting about the presentation aspect. There's no way we could send someone and do an Adele because that would also flop compared to the other 10 ballads in the contest. I'm thinking even a well-choreographed half decent Justice Crew performance could do okay, it's certainly trashy enough I still stand by anything remotely close to "Sea of Flags" will be an utter embarrassment.
I've come to conclude that Dami Im is the one I would love to see represent Australia at this. Her style and a song kind of like "Super Love" would go down a treat I reckon.
The Eurofan in me would love it if it was song performed by Olivia Newton-John and Gina G. I think I will genuinely disappointed if it is Jessica. I like her and everything but I would find it lazy to get her to represent us on the Eurostage again.
I wanted a Eurodance track from someone like Samantha Jade, Jess Mauboy or Ricki-Lee it's better than getting someone washed up/older like Barnesy or Daryl Braithwaite, but probably one of my least favourite choices of contemporary artists. Very disappointed and I'm sure it'll be a non-fun generic offering (as opposed a eurodance song which would have been fun generic )
oh and he's confirmed the two songs it's between are both ballads, KILL IT WITH FIRE #overreaction Last edited:
Yuck. I echo harley, was hoping if not Mauboy it'd be Ricki-Lee or Samantha Jade. And a ballad? Really? I didn't like Sea Of Flags as a choice, and I probably won't like Guy's either. I also agree with brosa in the sense that Super Love or a song similar would be a perfect choice, however I don't like Dami as a choice, and I definitely don't like Guy as a choice either.
Very disheartening choice, especially since the song "is from the new album", I haven't heard it in full yet however "Animal In Me" looks to be the only song on the album that meets the Eurovision 3-minute rule if we even qualify for that, is that a good song?
I figure if he can do something like Come Home With Me but not as annoying it should be good.
Sony boss didn't make it sound like a worthwhile opportunity though, think this will just be another "Sea Of Flags" effort on their part. Why not send a super group? Introduce Europe to a bunch of Australian Sony artists rather than just one that is outliving relevancy quickly. Last edited:
I admit I'm disappointed it is Guy, but really disappointed that he and the team are being lazy and just picking a song off his current album. I feel a song written for Eurovision would have been a better way to go. I think Guy's response that it's a 'dream opportunity' instead of 'a dream come true' indicates why he said yes to the gig. I'm gonna speculate that this is the start of him giving up on the American dream and hoping to cash in on Eurovision to gt into the European market. Well here is hoping Guy suproises me.
Gonna need a few more listens, it has that "Guy sameyness" but sounds almost like it would fit amongst the other choices, not a winner tho IMO. Last edited:
Really happy with this choice. I know I'm biased since aside from a few poor releases last year I'm a huge fan and it's exciting to see that he'll be representing the country at Eurovision.
If a ballad or "Alive" had been chosen I would've lost interest in supporting this decision though, since both options are bad ones in my opinion. But this new track is really good and I hope it does well at Eurovision.
Glad that he eventually decided to go with a previously unreleased song. Better than a ballad option, it is serviceable but doesn't strike me as a Top 10 finishers. But I would be more than happy to be proven wrong.
Out of curiosity I thought I'd see what the Top 20 Eurovision singles have been on my Personal chart since it started in 2011. This list only includes those songs that qualified for Eurovision and not songs that competed to represent their country (eg Danny Sauceo's Amazing) or appeared during half time (eg Jessica Mauboy's Sea Of Flag)
1. Coming Home - FireLight 2. Lipstick - Jedward 3. Tomorrow - Gianuca Bezzina 4. Standing Still - Roman Lobb 5. Hunter Of Stars - Sebalter 6. Waterline - Jedward 7. Children Of The Universe - Molly 8. I Can - Blue 9. Only Teardrops - Emmelie de Forest 10. Rise Like A Phoenix - Conchita Wurst 11. Rise Up - Freaky Fortune featuring RiskyKidd 12. Euphoria - Loreen 13. Stay - Tooji 14. Running Scared - Ell/Nikki 15. You - Robin Stjernberg 16. Only Love Survives - Ryan Dolan 17. Hold Me - Farid Mammadov 18. Cliché Love Song - Basim 19. Also on the retroactively applied charts there were the following #1s on my chart that were from Eurovision joining Lipstick and Coming Home as being official #1s on the chart
1.Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit - Gina G 2.It's My Time - Jade Ewan 3.Fairytale - Alexander Rybak
They actually had odds up last night because by sheer coincidence, I happened to stumble upon it then. They also had a bidding for whether or not Australia would compete next year, something like 1:80 for No, 2:20 for Yes
Also last night, Daniel Johns & Jarryd James were the shortest odds (at I think the same prices they are now)
If this is gonna be a regular thing, I would love SBS to choose the artist in a similar fashion that Sweden does. But for that to work, we would need Australia to take Eurovision seriously, cause we would either end up sending a joke act or an act that is 'too cool' for Eurovision. Resulting in us becoming a try hard UK copy.
Yeah I don't think we have the funds, support, interest or anything to do our own Melodifestivalen (and why bother when we already have X Factor and The Voice!) Does anyone else use this selection process anyway? Is it just Sweden?
A lot of countries use a selection process, Portugal and Germany I know for sure do. A lot of the songs transfer heavily into their charts also.
SBS could use the process as a precursor to build interest, especially if a people vote is involved. Maybe a pool of 5 artists to keep costs low-ish, release an EP with the songs and see how it charts?
The Australian representative for Eurovision 2016 will be announced this Thursday. Here is an article I found (from SBS) with a poll on who readers think should represent Australia.
I think it's a poor choice. She's technically a great singer, but she seems to be completely lacking in personality and any individuality; I don't think she'll add anything special to her performance. It'll have to be a really good song.
Is this where we talk about this year's Eurovision yet?
I've been listening to some of the songs available so far, and while there isn't a "Love Injected" in there for me, there's definitely some strong favourites already. Some stiff competition too that I don't think Dami will be able to overcome, based on her releases thus far.
