Hi Tempest, I just thought you might like to know, over here in Australia there were 3 versions of "Butterfly" on the charts sharing top postion, 1 for Matt Flinders & a double sided version for Danyel Gerard, where he sang the song in both French & German.

Regards John.
Hi John. Yeah kinda similar here with Mamy Blue in the chart by two different artists. Notice the different spelling. This trend will continue in these charts for a while yet.

Hi Tempest, I notice you've added something new to the charts,"Forecast" what does that mean?

Regards John.
In the NZ Listener they had that feature in the chart. It's singles coming up that haven't yet charted. I'm going to try and go back and add them to previous years. I don't have all of them but will add in what I have.
Thanks Tempest for your quick reply, we had the same sort of system here in Australia the difference being alot of the radio stations here had their own Top 40 charts & some of the DJ'S of the day would make a pick of what would/might enter the charts the following week.

Regards John.
Hi John. Yeah I saw some of them online. It was like that here too, especially before 1966.

Hi Tempest. Great effort with this and the March 10 (1972) chart contains some really good tracks from way way back espec. No.1, 5, 9, 11, 12 & 17. I reckon American Pie is No.1 NW or v.soon afterwards. It was/is a classic & it's good to see how it actually ran in the charts. I will wait for the next chart. Cheers.
Thanx VicTinny. Great to hear people are enjoying these charts

I remember they used to have the official Top 20 on 1YA of all stations around this time, Thursdays at 8.00pm. All the other stations used to have countdowns to, but they weren't sales driven. I remember a pamphlet the local record stores had, with the 1ZB and 1ZM countdown lists on it. ZB was an easy listening one (a bit like Radio i), and 1ZM was more rock/pop/soul/etc orientated. Hauraki used to have a countdown at teatime on Mondays, again Rock orientated. Used to tune in to most of them, but the 1YA one was the best. 1YA too had a print out at the record shops, and Im sure it was the Pop-o-Meter chart. Anyway, "How Do You Do" gets to No 1 (I think), Beautiful Sunday too, and coming shortly is 'Puppy Love" which topped the chart for a whopping 8 weeks sometime in '72. I remember the DJ saying it had sold 40,000+ copies. My favourite 2Metal Guru", gets in the Top 10 I think. Great memories the music gives you!
You're onto it Obsorecs. This chart was broadcast, according to the NZ Listener, on Thursdays at 7.2pm on 1ZB, 2ZB, 3ZB, 4ZB, 1ZH, 1ZN, 1ZC, 1ZD, 2ZC, 2ZA, 2ZG, 2ZP, 3ZC, and 4ZA. On Fridays at 7.2pm on 2ZN and 2ZD. Peter Sinclair was the compare. Wish I could hear a recording of it. There must be one somewhere.

Hi Tempest, Could have sworn it was 1YA, never mind, memories packing up, though I was going to say Peter Sinclair as the host but wasn't fully sure. None of those new forecasts did much.
though Neil Young deserved to!
Hi again. I typed those radio stations straight off a Listener photocopy, so it was correct. Glad you are enjoying the charts.

In the NZ Listener they had that feature in the chart. It's singles coming up that haven't yet charted. I'm going to try and go back and add them to previous years. I don't have all of them but will add in what I have.

Hi Kanwal. That sounds great, thanx. I looked back over my charts from 1966 and found I have the odd one. I do have the rest up to 1975 and will add them when I post the chart.

I have added Hi-Fliers (as it was called then) for charts on 27 March and 10 April 1970. If anyone can help with others in 1970 please let me know. Ta
The Hollies "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress"... Love, Love, Love...groovy track... that ever so simple guitar lick is so insatiable that you always want more...
Hi Tempest, Just a slight typo, you've got Jimmy Carter "Troflodyte". It's Jimmy Caster "Troglodyte".

Regards John.
Thanx John. I knew I'd get that one wrong!!!. I fixed it.
I agree album guru. Should be one of the best guitar licks ever.

Hi Temest, sorry for being a pest, but you're partly right it's "Jimmy Caster" not "Jimmy Carter". You're thinking of one of the former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter.

Regards John.
Hi Tempest, John again, even I made a mistake, It's Jimmy Castor not Caster. Sorry.

Regards John.
Hi John. You're right. I had another look myself. Funny how one letter can change everything. Thanx

Very appropriate I think at #17 on the eve of the Dunedin Rod Stewart concert.
Hi Tempest, just a slight mistake, it's "Cornelius Brothers And Sister Rose" not "Roe".

Regards John.
Hi John - oops!!! Missed a letter. Thanx
Hi Tempest, thanks for your quick reply, you fixed the 20/10/72, but 6/10/72 & 13/10/72 still shows "Roe", "not "Rose".

Sorry for being so picky.

Regards John.
All fixed John. Thanx for your keen eye

Great work Tempest...

Shouldn't "Layla" be credited as Clapton's supergroup... Derek And The Dominoes? Unless of course the credit was changed with this belated release (originally released in 1970)...a tad confused...

Mott The Hoople...classic
I was confused about that one too Joe. I have a record that credits Derek and the Dominoes. 20 Solid Gold Hits volume 4 credits the song to Eric Clapton. On Google and 45cat sites I found singles credited to both. The NZ Listener credited Eric Clapton so in the end that's what I went with. Wickepedia says the song by Derek and the Dominoes from 1970 was unsuccessful. It was re-released in 1972 and credited to Eric Clapton. He also had a hit with an acoustic version in 1992 on the Unplugged album.
Did you know the man who helped Mott The Hoople with All The Young Dudes was David Bowie. I agree. A classic.

Yeah I did know Bowie helped out the Hoople...

I had a funny argument over "Layla" with someone about two months ago... the Derek And The Dominoes version was playing on the radio and the "other" person involved stated... "what is this crap cover of Clapton's gem from "Unplugged"... Well what a marathon discussion it was trying to tell this person that the song was originally by Clapton, yes.... but was actually the centre piece song to the album "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs" by Derek And The Dominoes (Clapton's band at the time)...1970...hahahaha...I came out on top

Hi Tempest, I just thought you might like to know, I've just checked 45 Cat and in the U.K. & N.Z. it's "Heyken's Serenade" here in Australia it's "Heyken's Second Serenade", I've just noticed for 10/11/72-24/11/72 you have "Hayken's Serenade".

Regards John.
Hi John, once again, many thanx. I was 100% sure on that one but on looking at 45 Cat I found the record in question. I actually got that out of Dean Scapolo's book. There appears to be different versions for this one but Australia is closest to what we would have had. I thought I had a copy but can't find it. Oh well, I've changed it.

Hahahahaha.... My Ding-A-Ling....classic. Chuck Berry got into a lot of trouble with that one, pretty sure it was banned from heaps of radio stations in most countries...hahahahaha...
It was banned. In fact Chuck Berry got arrested over it but he produced a stick with bells on it to show to the court what a ding-a-ling was. LOL

Hey John, I just noticed a mistake in your post. Your punctuation is wrong, and you didn't use a capital letter to start a sentence. Naughty, very naughty. Haha.

Hi Tempest, first of all, what a start to my teenage years, a lot of memories came flooding back.
I'm looking forward to the charts for 1973-1975.

Secondly, you mention in your intro to the 1972 charts that you wanted to thank Dean Scapolo for his help.

I think you and some of your followers have already answered part of my next question, but I'll ask it anyway.
I have a copy of Dean's book "The Complete N.Z. Music Charts" 1966-2006, & I noticed that some of the songs have "Coming Up" next to them, does that mean there are other charts besides the "Top 20/40"? and if so are they available, I mentioned in one of my earlier postings to you that over here in Australia that each State & radio stations had there own chart, so a song that charted in say Sydney didn't chart in any of the other states & vise versa.
Was that the same in N.Z.?

Lastly I read with great interest that your current chart will turning 40 next month I'm really looking forward to your month long tribute.

Regards John.
Hi John. Thank you for your comments. I was a 11 in 1972. I remember the early 20 Solid Gold Hits compilations covering these.
Some charts were not published in the NZ Listener and that becomes more common in 1973/4. Dean helped me fill in the gaps but sadly, no forecast for those charts.
I also have Dean's book. The coming up entries are the same as forecast. It was called forecast in the Listener.
Local radio stations, especially independant stations had their own charts. I used to follow the 4XO Top 40 which was based on Dunedin sales and lasted from 1971 to 1975. 4ZA in Invercargill also had a Top 40.
1973 charts will follow...
Wow.. what a waltz through nostalgia! I was 13 in 1972... first year in high school at Dunstan High School in Alexandra. Scrolling through these lists took me right back there. Thank you so much!
Your more than welcome Alison

Hello again, Tempest. Just 2 for the first half of 72.

1 Jan - Benny Hill - not Bennie
2 Mar - Mom & Dads - No apostrophe in Dads

See you in 6 months. Keep up the good work.
Well that was a quick 6 months

July - Betcha By Golly, Wow - comma omitted
Sep - Little Willy - not Willie (no rude comments please)
Nov - You didn't change all of the Kaykan's to Keyken's

On to 1973 - now having to WORK for a living - Horror!

This exercise is useful for me too as I've corrected a number of
errors in my UK chart lists.

Finally, have you heard of the site Discogs.com - very useful for
checking.
I'm having problems fixing mistakes. When I go to submit it says access forbidden.

Actually I have no idea how all these mistakes got in there. The printed version I typed up is correct and was copied into this site. At the time the entry was correct. There's been some strange things going on with this site for a while.

The The Day Is Ended/Heyken's Second Serenade - The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards entry according to 45 cat is correct, not what you suggest
