I suspect that data is not available outside the top 100 for 1988.

This blog also has listed ARIA peaks for all Breakers that did not enter the top 50 between June 26, 1988 (first ARIA-produced chart) and the end of 1989, if you scroll back through the 2013 and 2014 entries. It also contains peaks outside the top 100 for the 'single of the week' on the printed top 50 chart if it did not enter the top 100:

This is excellent.Such hard work,bravo!
I think this would be a good place to record below 100 peaks from the weekly positions bulion has been recently posting Naturally some of these may have peaked higher in other weeks they weren't posted, but I have 96% of 101-120 positions since March so most should be correct.

Thanks for those peaks 392414. I have little interest in current charts (due to being largely stuck in the 80s/90s musically ), but I'm sure some people will find it of interest.

Most of the peaks I've posted above reflect either my taste, or videos I've uploaded to youtube (where I add chart information in the video description).

I wish this information was more readily available, as many of my favourite songs/artists were flops here, and I love finding out exactly where their releases charted locally. I find it's generally a lot harder to predict their peaks below #100. Some of those peaks I'm surprised are as 'high' as they are, and others I'm shocked they're so low.

I should have some more peaks to post in the next few months.

And here's a full top 100 chart obtained from ARIA for the week ending 26th March 1989 (though ARIA have dated it from its week commencing date, 20th March 1989). Positions 51-100 have not been publicly released. TI (times in [weeks in], I assume) represents no. of weeks in the top 100.

^ Unfortunately I can't provide the month for when those singles peaked. I didn't ask for that information, as I was just grateful enough to receive the peaks, and it would have taken more time for the ARIA staff member to annotate.

I am 99% sure that I caught 'Million Miles Away' on rage in late November 1992, though it may have been early/mid December.

'Every Shade of Blue' debuted on rage (I think it was the only time they played it) on 2nd or 9th March 1996 (I used to annotate the dates when I recorded things off rage, from about 1995 - I'd have to find the piece of paper I wrote the dates down on, I'm pretty sure I've got it somewhere). I believe it was released in Canada and/or Japan in 1995 though. I'm pretty sure it was re-released here too around Aug/Sep 1997 when they toured here.

I remember seeing 'Take Me To Your Heart' on Video Hits (didn't see it on rage) in late November or early December 1996, a few weeks after I finished high school.

Collette I'm pretty sure was released around April or May 1991.

I'm pretty sure 'Liar Liar' was aired on Australian MTV in March 1989. I remember watching it when visiting a then-friend's house after school (he'd taped it from MTV the weekend before).

In one of the Chartifacts columns from 1991 (in the ARIA report, I think when 'I'm On Your Side' debuted), it mentioned that 'Make Out Alright' narrowly missed the top 100 in June 1991.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I used to write (and later type) up the top 50/60 from rage, and also had a 'hit predictions' list. Just a few weeks ago, I made a list of my 'hit predictions' that didn't enter the top 100, with the dates I listed them. I've got 'Rebel With a Cause' listed on 17/10/1992. I'm pretty sure I didn't hear the track at the time though; I think it was reviewed in Smash Hits from the week before.

Actually, looking at my list, I've got 'Million Miles Away' listed as a hit prediction for 21/11/1992, so rage must have aired it that weekend. I've got 'Visualise' listed as a hit prediction on 19/12/1992 (I dated all my charts as the Saturday, the day before the ARIA publication date, as that's when rage aired them). Quite a handy list it turned out to be

I haven't yet compiled my hit predictions lists before 1992 or after 1993, so I might have to get back to you on 'You Don't Own Me', but I've got a feeling it was around November 1991. I remember seeing it on the music video show Power Cuts on Channel 10 one night after school.

I haven't yet done my 1994 list, but 'Only We Can Hear' was out in mid/late June 1994 from memory. I've got a recording of the remix video from rage in July 1994.

I wasn't aware of 'In Too Deep' until after the Belinda Carlisle cover, but it was 1995.

Thanks Nugs, all of that looks pretty spot-on and very useful to me. I wish I'd kept all my ARIA reports from 1990-98, then I'd be able to check the release dates of singles, but like an idiot I got rid of them.

I remember seeing Million Miles Away on Rage too, and buying the CD single afterwards, possibly for 99 cents, as Love Is Holy had been.

You Don't Own Me was on one of the first Smash Hits video magazines, late 1991 or early 1992.
I had a feeling 'Love Is Holy' was heavily discounted. I like the song, but was most surprised to see it (before I'd heard it) enter the lower region of the top 60 on rage (considering she hadn't had a hit in several years), before later climbing.

I got Shakespears Sister's 'I Don't Care' cassingle for $0.99 the week it was released, and I think the CD single was the same price.

I will check through my other 'hit predictions' in the not too distant future for more-precise dates. I used to base them largely on new videos rage had aired, as well as singles reviewed or mentioned in Smash Hits, and sometimes also seeing a single in the shops.

I photocopied the Chartifacts columns and the top 100 singles & albums charts from the ARIA reports in the Vic State Library between 1994 (the earliest they had) and 1999 over 2 trips in 2005-6; but I didn't bother copying the lists of new releases as it was already time consuming enough with the other stuff. I never got the ARIA report myself - I probably would have if I knew what the 'for detailed chart information, send $100 for a 6 month subscription' at the bottom of the top 50 ARIA charts meant.
Here's some more ARIA peaks I received, outside the top 100 (or between 51-100 for 1988-9). There are a small number of duplicates from those listed above:

Nugs,you are a legend!
I don't know about that.

I just asked re: Lamb's 'Gorecki' and 'B Line'. NCH applies to them both (Lamb's only charting single was 'Gabriel' at #95 )
Thanks for the extra info Nugs!

Quite a few gaps filled by singles that didn't chart in the UK either, but now I know they charted here, particularly :
For Once In Your Life by Sam Brown - I recall this being played once on Video Smash Hits
Kate Bush - Eat The Music - recall seeing it on CD single
Margaret Urlich - Second Best - another one they played on Video Smash Hits
Max Q - Monday Night by satellite - saw this on something on ABC, might have been Countdown Revolution.

Have you ever asked about T'Pau? Would you know if Bridge Of Spies (the single) charted? I think it might have been released between Heart & Soul and China In Your Hand, and played on Rage,
^ I didn't personally ask about T'Pau, but another Oz chart follower I've been in touch with did, and none of the singles other than 'China In Your Hand' (which peaked at #53 on the AMR chart a few weeks before the ARIA-produced chart commenced... 65 must've been its peak after the ARIA-produced chart began) and 'Heart & Soul' charted; although I strongly suspect that - for whatever reason - ARIA don't have positions beyond #100 on their database until early 1989. Here's the T'Pau response he got:

T'Pau Valentine1988NCH
T'Pau China In Your Hand1988#65
T'Pau Secret Garden1988NCH
T'Pau Road To Our Dream1988NCH
T'PauOnly The Lonely1989NCH
T'PauWhenever You Need Me1991NCH

ARIA's database only starts from the first in-house produced chart, week ending 26th June 1988... so if 'Bridge of Spies' was released between Heart & Soul and China In Your Hand, it wouldn't be on ARIA's database.

I'm pretty sure Sam Brown's 'Once In Your Life' was not released as a single in the UK; they instead got 'Mindworks' and then 'As One'.

Similarly, Kate Bush's 'Eat the Music' was not released as a single in the UK, though a handful of copies were pressed before they decided to go with 'Rubberband Girl' instead. I didn't buy the 'Eat the Music' Oz single, but interestingly it had a scratch n' sniff sleeve!

Max Q's 'Monday Night By Satellite' did air on Countdown Revolution; I remember seeing it there. About half of these singles I asked about to add the Oz chart info to my youtube uploads.

One peak I received from ARIA (and didn't post above) which seems to be inaccurate (presumably a typo) is Roisin Murphy's 'You Know Me Better', which is listed as peaking at #98. But when I checked the pandora archive of ARIA reports (because I wouldn't have thought I'd miss its chart entry), it's only listed on the Hit Seekers chart, peaking at #15... which makes me think maybe it peaked at #198? I should ask them to re-check it.
Thanks Nugs, it makes sense that ARIA don't have the lower positions pre-June 1988 on their database. it's amazing that you and a few others have uncovered as much as you have, it's much appreciated.

Thanks for the T'Pau data.
I wonder if there is any info on positions outside the top 100 for Wendy Matthews. Some of these must have come close, particularly "TKO" and "Big" as I recall them being played on Video Hits. "Free" was played a lot on Foxtel too.

1993 TKO
1995 Say A Prayer
1997 Big
1998 I've Got To Have You
2000 Free
2001 Like The Sun

^ I reckon at least some of those would definitely have registered peaks outside the top 100. Though to be honest, I find it difficult sometimes to predict what will/won't have registered a chart position in this range, as some singles I've thought were quite likely to didn't chart at all, and vice versa.

Here's some more peaks I've obtained:

Thanks for the extra info. I'm particularly pleased that Mandy charted, as it didn't in the UK.

I don't even know that prince song. Thanks as always for providing these nugs!
Just got hold of some old ARIA reports, and noticed that the ARIA Hit Seekers chart (a top 25 listing of singles by artists who have not previously had a top 50 hit, ranked in order of their national sales) was a part of these from 1994. That's all I've got at this point.

The inclusion of Live's 'I Alone' on these charts seems to be a mistake, as 'Selling the Drama' had entered the top 50 previously.

Songs I asked about are based on my taste among songs that seemed likely to have charted and were featured on The Factory or reviewed in Smash Hits during late 1988/89..
Information in bold is new, otherwise it compliments Nugs' research.

Thanks for those, Meglos! Some you've requested are double-ups that I've previously asked for, but it's good to see the entry dates for those.

I think Howard Jones' 'Everlasting Love' was on my list (I keep a spreadsheet adding them as they come to mind ) to possibly ask about in future.

I've sent another list to ARIA a while back, but it's long, so will take a while to get complete. I feel bad for burdening them with this extra work, but there's no other way to obtain it, unfortunately. I would love a copy of their whole chart database (don't necessarily need the sales part, as I'm less interested in that) from 1988 until the end of the 90s if it was available to purchase/obtain access to. I asked about the top 100 weekly charts for 1988 and 1989, but these weren't able to be found/aren't available, and there was no ARIA Report for that period.

ARIA have now scanned all of their ARIA Reports, from January 1990, and these can be bought (emailed, or sent on USB stick) as .pdf copies for $220 for a whole year, or $4-something each a pop. Saves spending hours copying/scanning in State Libraries. They are about 28 pages long each, and contain a treasure trove of other information, like new music videos aired on Rage/Countdown Revolution/MTV/The Noise etc., a list of new singles and albums released, and new additions to radio.

From these, I've obtained/can obtain some release dates for singles you asked about earlier (when I've gone through them all). Here's one I've spotted:

Kim Wilde's 'Million Miles Away' was released on 16/11/92.

I asked ARIA about the peak date for a couple of singles, if this was available. They instead sent me the release date for a few (I didn't know they would have this on their database too):

Big Fun & Sonia 'You've Got a Friend' 27/8/90
Depeche Mode 'Personal Jesus' 29/10/90
Efua 'Down Is the Drop' 17/1/94
Sonia 'Can't Forget You' 3/11/89

Albums:

Efua 'Dream Juice' 15/11/93

PS that's interesting you got NCH for The Human League's 'Love Is All That Matters'; I was given a #113 peak for that one.

Meglos, here's a few other release dates you asked for a while back. These are listed in the ARIA Reports as 'New product available from' (always a Monday/start of the week):

Collette 'This Will Be (Everlasting Love)' - 25/3/91
Chantoozies 'I'll Be There' - 23/9/91
Divinyls 'Make Out Alright' - 10/6/91 (7" and cassingle)
Divinyls 'Make Out Alright' - 17/6/91 (CD single)
Girl Overboard 'Chain of Fools' - 28/9/92
Indecent Obsession 'Rebel With a Cause' - 5/10/92
Gyan 'Visualize' - 19/10/92

I only have until the end of 1994 so far.

Thanks for the extra information nugs. It's fascinating to put some of the pieces of a puzzle back together all these years later. ARIA have been extremely helpful and efficient, one staff member in particular has gone out of her way to fulfil my requests. As you say, I feel bad taking up so much of their time over something that may not seem that important, but I would pay for it if it were all released in book or spreadsheet form. It would be wonderful if the full data from 1988 surfaced one day, but I appreciate anything I can get. I have another list they are looking into, I'll update here if anything new comes to light.
I bought all the ARIA report back issues from issue one (1990) to 1992, then subscribed from 92-98, but sadly didn't keep the hard copies.

Thanks for the release dates, much appreciated.

Nugs, is there anything of interest in the Australian artist only charts from those years that didn't make the top 100?

The helpful ARIA staff member you're referring to is no doubt the same one I have been in contact with.

I just got this response for the peak dates for the releases I asked about:

Depeche Mode 'Personal Jesus' 10.12.90
Efua 'Down Is the Drop' 31.1.94

Sonia 'Listen To Your Heart' 5.3.90
Sonia 'End of the World' 8.10.90
Tasmin Archer 'In Your Care' 31.5.93

The Wee Papa Girl Rappers 'Heat It Up' 30.1.89
Tori Amos 'Past the Mission' 11.7.94
Tori Amos 'Silent All These Years' 23.3.92
Tori Amos 'Talula' 29.4.96
Yazz 'Where Has All the Love Gone?' 19.6.89
Yazz 'Never Can Say Goodbye' 16.6.97

Albums:

Efua 'Dream Juice' 22.11.93
Sonia 'Everybody Knows' 3.9.90

Based on the Wee Papa Girl Rappers chart peak date (it was released in early November 1988), the earliest chart entry date you have been provided, and the lack of chart history for late 1988 releases such as 'Never Trust a Stranger', it seems like maybe chart positions beyond the top 100 were not available until late January 1989.

By the way, ARIA only have chart info on their database from the first ARIA-produced chart (week commencing 20/6/88, week ending 26/6/88), so asking them for data before then is futile (the person I've been in touch with at ARIA has given me David Kent chart book info for a couple of mid '88 singles that entered the Kent Report chart but not the ARIA top 100).

I'm only up to July 1990 in going through them properly, but so far there is no Australian Artists Top 20 chart. Though I just had a quick look through a 1994 ARIA report and didn't see one then, either. Maybe they didn't start until later?

I've spotted a couple of singles that were in the state top 40 charts before being in the national top 100. Some of these later went on to enter the top 100. Normally they have a '0' in the HP column, but in a couple of weeks there appears a HP outside the top 100 - I've added this where this is the case:

Excellent. Good to be able to place that Efua song, I think I recorded it off either Rage or Video Hits at the time, and then it never charted in the top 100.

I just had a response too. Some you had already covered but we now have dates, and some other random requests. Fascinating to discover from one of the recent songs that the chart now seems to be possibly a top 300! How awesome would it be to see that (though I have less interest in current music than nostalgic stuff).

Release date for Jo Beth-Taylor's 'You Don't Own Me' - 17/2/92.

It took me a while to find it, as I wasn't sure if it was released in November 1991 or February 1992 - normally my memory is good for these things, but in this case it wasn't.
Well, the ARIA Report was clearly wrong with the 'You Don't Own Me' release date, unless there was a reprint (seems unlikely for a #137 peaking single) or remix version later released (ditto).

I've seen a few other anomalies with release dates in the ARIA Report so far, such as Kylie's 'Better the Devil You Know' being available from the start of the week it entered the chart - unless it was released mid-week the week before.

Thanks for posting those! 'TKO' was on the long list I sent through a month or so ago.

When looking through an ARIA report, I saw that Sam Brown's 'Mindworks' was a single here too, which I had forgotten about.

I was pretty certain 'I Don't Wanna Get Hurt' wasn't released as a single here.

^ Thanks for those!

Another 30/1/1989 entry date for a 1988 single, making me think that was the first week ARIA calculated chart positions beyond #100 (or at least that's the earliest they're archived on their database).

I was given a NCH for 'This Feeling', which I think was on the first list I sent through... so I'm glad to finally find out it charted! Great song. Would have done better no doubt if it received any promotion. I remember seeing it in the shops/it being mentioned (or reviewed) in Smash Hits, but never heard or saw it anywhere at the time. Strange that it entered the chart in September 1989. I thought I saw it in the shops much earlier than that/at the same time 'Stop!' (the single) was in the chart.

Yes, Video Hits used the AMR chart right through until it ceased publication. I remember being annoyed with the two different charts when e.g. someone (who knew I followed the charts) would say at school that such and such was #1 (on Video Hits), but it wasn't #1 on ARIA.

I never knew 'Hold an Old Friend's Hand' was a single.

Yes that would make sense about the first chart being the end of January 1989, which would be why some of our 1988 requests come back NCH. A lot of them must have come close though, especially "Never Trust a Stranger" and songs like "You Have Placed A Chill In My heart" which seemed a certainty at the time.

I had Tiffany's second album at the time, but also didn't know the title song was a single until I got a Billboard Adult Contemporary book, and saw it charted on there. It's great to have an official mainstream chart position for it though.

I recall seeing the video for "This Feeling" once on TV at around the time we now know it charted. It had been a hit in the UK in 1988 so maybe some copies made their way here earlier (or a non-charting original release, like Walking Back To Me which was reviewed in Smash Hits in June 1988 )...

^ The funny thing about the Eurythmics' 'Savage' era for me is that 'You Have Placed..' was easily the song I heard the most out of the 4 singles, yet charted the worst; and I never heard 'Beethoven' at the time, and it charted the best!

Going by the Australian catalogue no.'s, 'This Feeling' (K635 for the 7", C635 for the cassingle) was released after 'Stop!' (K610), but a fair bit before 'Can I Get a Witness?' (K850). 'Stop!' missed the top 50, and lingered around the lower region of the AMR top 100, in late 1988; so was released some months before it finally cracked the local top 50. 'This Feeling' was presumably released shortly afterwards, but then overshadowed by 'Stop!'s belated success... then presumably re-released after 'Can I Get a Witness'? It peaked at #91 in the UK, so flopped there as well.

It's a pity there's no ARIA chart entry for Shakespear's Sister's 'Break My Heart', as I've seen no evidence of that charting in any country.
You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart was certainly the most played Savage single on FM radio, and the video was on tv a fair bit too, so I was surprised when I caught up with the old charts that it had not only missed the top 40, but the top 100 as well.

Break My Heart (You Really) was played on The Factory on 10 December 1988, and reviewed in Smash Hits on 22 February 1989, so yes that was the song I was most surprised to find had NCH. We can only hope that the late 1988 charts come to light one day, or speculate on what *might* have been in the top 200. I' am of the opinion that the pop songs featured in full on The Factory (and Video Hits) probably were taken from that week's chart, but there's no way of proving it.

These were the songs played on The Factory that in my opinion semed most likely to have charted outside the top 100 but came back as NCH

White Lion - Wait NCH The Factory 19/03/88
Voice Of The Beehive - I Walk The Earth NCH The Factory 14/05/88

'Til Tuesday - (Believed You Were) Lucky NCH The Factory 12/02/89

These were reviewed in Smash Hits and also seemed likely candidates to have charted :

Tiffany - Feelings Of Forever NCH Smash Hits 19/10/88
Cher - Main Man NCH Smash Hits 14/12/88

'You Have Placed a Chill In My Heart' received a fair bit of airplay on Fox FM in Melbourne. I didn't know what the song title was though until getting their Greatest Hits album in 1991, but remember seeing the song title on 'Savage' in the stores and thinking it was an unusual song title.

I remember seeing 'Break My Heart' or 'You Break My Heart' (as it was titled in Hit Songwords) mentioned in late 1988 in magazines, and a January 1989 edition of Smash Hits featuring an article titled "This 'person' used to be in Bananarama!" But I missed The Factory airing of the video.

A 'friend' from school had recorded MTV, and I remember watching the tape at his place, and Richard Wilkins mentioning that they were playing the new Shakespear's Sister video that night, but my friend didn't want to watch it... so I didn't hear the song until buying the album 3 years later.

Countdown Revolution definitely received at least a top 100 chart in 1989, I believe, as they would announce new entries/breakers outside the top 50 from time to time (and they used the ARIA chart). I assume that the full top 100 (or beyond) was available to industry back then, and it would have been in printed form of some sort, so it's surprising that ARIA don't seem to have a record of this now, other than chart entries/peak positions/debut dates etc. on their database.

I remember seeing 'Touchy!' on The Factory. I probably saw it more than once (maybe also on Video Hits as a hit prediciton), as I remembered the chorus years later, so was surprised to see that one missed the top 100. By contrast I never heard 'Stay On These Roads' at the time (but remember seeing it mentioned in Smash Hits), which did chart in the 50's.

Here's some chart info outside the top 50 I noted down from Countdown Revolution at the time, for singles climbing into the top 50 from outside, along with the corresponding chart week ending date:

Tone Loc ‘Funky Cold Medina’ 54-37
Johnny Diesel & The Injectors ‘Looking For Love’ 68-32
Bangles ‘Be With You’ 54-46
James Reyne ‘One More River’ 51-38

Hummingbirds ‘Blush’ 95-32 3/9/89
Martika ‘Toy Soldiers’ 69-35 3/9/89
Gyan ‘Wait’ 62-49 3/9/89
Transvision Vamp ‘The Only One’ 76-30 17/9/89
Simply Red ‘A New Flame’ 62-48 24/9/89
Cyndi Lauper ‘My First Night Without You’ 60-66-(later top 50)-47 24/9/89
Eurythmics ‘Revival’ 73-38 24/9/89
Boom Crash Opera ‘Get Out of the House’ 56-42 24/9/89

Technotronic ‘Pump Up the Jam’ 57-38 3/12/89
Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers ‘That’s What I Like’ 62-4 3/12/89

On the 7/7/1989 episode of Countdown Revolution (re-aired on rage during retro month 2012), Inner City's 'Ain't Nobody' was announced as being #82 this week, 3 weeks after its appearance as a Breaker on the printed top 50 chart. W.A.S.P.'s 'The Real Me' (which missed the AMR top 100) was announced as being at #89, and Wa Wa Nee's 'I Want You' was announced as being at #74 (with the 'Blush' album at #61) on the same episode.

I also remember seeing Bros' 'Cat Among the Pigeons/Silent Night' being announced at #54 or thereabouts on The Factory on the screen, after it had fallen out of the top 50, when they aired the videos back to back (with the segue between) for both songs.

If these charts exist in printed form, maybe the ABC has them archived somewhere still?

Thanks for the Countdown Revolution information. I used to watch it religiously. Until 1986 I only had the ABC and one other regional channel, so almost everything I saw was from Countdown, Rock Arena or SA shows Trax and Music Express. Obviously Rage came along soon after, and Video Hits. I know what you mean about not knowing the proper titles of songs - You Have Placed a Chill In My Heart was played on Rage in the days when they only ran the artist and not the song title.
Nugs/Meglos, all this beyond-#100 data is fascinating. Do either of you (or does anyone else) know exactly how far the charts actually extend? Meaning, is there a hard-and-fast cut off position (i.e. #200, #500, #1000) or does it just go on and on until the last entry with the least sales of the week? I know we saw some funny numbers earlier in the year, just after ARIA's updated website went live (I think it was a Samantha Jade single that had a LW position of #874 or whatever it was) so I'd be curious to know what the deal is.

All of this also got me wondering exactly how low sales have to be to get an overall result of NCH. We can safely assume (I think) that most of the singles you guys have been enquiring about were actually released locally. Over the years, aside from certifications (which represent volume shipped to retail, not volume sold) I've never seen much actual sales data, though I've seen enough to know that some weeks it doesn't take all that many, relatively speaking, for a single to reach the lower regions of the chart. I guess my curiosity on this point is kinda related to my first question - do we assume that a) NCH means that not one solitary copy of the single in question was ever sold (or, at least, if it did sell its sales were never reported)? Or b) whatever volume was sold was never sufficient for the song to ever achieve any chart position, however far beyond #100 the total chart extends? Or c) the NCH references are only based on there being no peak position inside the Top 100?

I won't use that dreaded word *official*, because the data is always official if it comes from ARIA, irrespective of the chart position or whether it was ever published. But with all the additional references to peak positions beyond #100 that you guys (and others) have tracked down over time, it would be good to clarify exactly what NCH refers to.
Nugs can elaborate in more detail, but from the positions we've acquired, I believe that 'NCH' for singles before 1989 means they didn't reach the top 100, which at this stage seems to be what ARIA have in their database. From 1989 onwards it seems to extend to a top 200, though how far the overall chart extends is anybody's guess.
tinascousin, another Oz chart follower (I'm not sure if he posts here) who has contacted them asked the same question, about how low the charts go/how far they went back then, and was told 'it varies', or words to that effect.

Another person I know who works in media told me that the organisation he worked for in the early 00's had access to at least a top 300 through an online site - but this would have been the current week's chart rather than an archive of all past charts.

I read a .pdf from the ARIA website a few months ago stating that the chart (presumably that available to industry/those with a subscription to the secure site) is calculated to a top 600. Exclusions are applied beyond that point - at least for singles, I think if they've been on the chart for more than 52 (possibly more) weeks and have a stable trend of declining sales. I'm sure that document is still there somewhere (I saved it and can give you the name of it if you can't find it).

The lowest peak for singles by year I've received to date are:

1988 - 94 (They Might Be Giants 'Don't Let's Start')
1989 - 180 (2 Live Crew's 'Me So Horny')
1990 - 171 (The House of Love's 'Shine On')
1991 - 179 (Bananarama's 'Long Train Running')
1992 - 212 (Nomad's '24 Hours a Day')
1993 - 226 (The Poppies' 'That's What We'll Do')
1994 - 259 (Shara Nelson's 'Nobody')
1995 - 247 (Pandora's 'Tell the World')
1996 - 258 (TSD's 'Heart & Soul')
1997 - 269 (Mandalay's 'This Life')

So it's fair to assume there was at least a top 200 between 1989 and 1991, and probably at least a top 300 from 1992.

I assume once the chart was collated from electronic point of sales data (March 1997), the chart could be calculated as low as there were releases being tracked. But having said that, I have received a couple of NCH for singles/albums that were definitely released here after then.

Someone who added an Ace of Base peak outside the top 100 (for 'Living With Danger'), which was correct, to their wikipedia discography article in 2008 said in a talk page comment that their database has a top 6000 on it when questioned about the accuracy/his source for adding the peak (which was removed as he couldn't provide a reliable source).

I would assume that NCH means there were not sufficient sales reported for that release when the chart had a much higher cut-off than it does now. Before electronic sales recording of data submitted to ARIA, they presumably had to compile the chart manually, through receiving faxes/making phone calls etc., and inputting the data manually. I'm sure they wouldn't have had the capacity or inclination to calculate the chart into the thousands back then.

NCH does not mean it failed to enter the top 100 - as there is clearly data beyond the top 100 recorded on their database, from at least late January 1989. It doesn't look like this exists though between late June 1988 (when ARIA commenced producing the chart themselves) and January 1989.

The Kent Report printed top 100 charts also had a section for 'singles receiving significant sales reports* beyond the top 100', which typically listed anywhere between 7-15 singles. An example of this can be seen here - http://i.imgur.com/4lZKXb0.jpg

(*seems a contradiction in terms)

The lowest albums chart peak I've received is #334 (Bananarama's 'Drama'), but that was released here in 2006.

I'm insanely curious as to how many were considered "significant sales" beyond the Top 100 back then. And today, for that matter.

I guess the other thing we always need to keep in mind with this stuff - and it's kinda related to the issue of accreditations being for volume shipped to retail as opposed to volume sold at retail - is that reported sales are never definitive numbers. i.e. sales data is not collected from all retailers, only those who contribute as "ARIA chart stores" (presumably this now extends to online sales and retailers as well), so sales figures never represent every individual sale - rather, they are *representative of* total sales.
Unfortunately I didn't save it at the time, but years ago (like early 00's), I remember reading an article that mentioned how many sales the #100 single had that week, and it was actually much higher than I would have thought (I think around the mid 700's). I don't know how that relates to sales of the #100 (or lower) singles in the 80's, given that Australia had a lower population then - but then there wasn't 'illegal' downloading etc., so it might have actually been about the same/higher.

Then there's this article from July 2014 - http://www.noise11.com/news/robin-thicke-debuts-in-australian-chart-at-207-20140714 - stating that Robin Thicke's 'Paula' album sold 158 copies that week to place it at #207; while the #100 album that week sold 296 copies, and the #40 album sold 542 copies. But album sales had declined significantly by that point, I believe.

And this article from 2013 stating that Geri Halliwell's 'Half of Me' single debuted at #281 with 393 copies - http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/geri-halliwells-comeback-single-sells-just-393-copies-in-australia/story-e6frfn09-1226752800940 .

I remember that Geri Halliwell article, and that Mel B had fared even worse, not even making the top 500. So there is at least a top 500 - when someone wants to know, at least.
aaaaah yeah... I remember that Geri Halliwell article too. Mostly I remember thinking "WTF? Geri Halliwell has a new single?" And now I've seen it again, I also remember seeing the statement "Mel B's song has yet to chart in the Australian Top 500 singles chart after two weeks of release" and almost creaming myself at the thought of a Top 500 and what it might contain and how long it went back and how hard it would be to obtain the data... in a nutshell, I got kinda excited!

And then, clearly, I just forgot all about it

Those numbers in the Robin Thicke article are eye-opening, aren't they? They say a lot about so many things but, ultimately, that the internet killed albums! Maybe that's a tad unkind. It's not the internet. It's how retailers have chosen to make music available via the internet that's killed album sales. For the most part, music these days has become more about individual tracks than ever before, except that where they used to serve as promotional tools for an album and, occasionally, make it big in their own right, now individual tracks have the lion's share of sales - sales that, in some cases, far exceed sales of some of the highest selling albums from the past. I don't much care for it, myself, but what can you do?

I also recall Geri saying in a follow-up article, on her decision to abandon releasing new solo material, that she was told that 'Half of Me' peaked at "#92" (from memory, but it was definitely in the 90's). Perhaps that was #92 on the Australian-artists-only chart? Even though of course she's not 'Australian', she was based here at the time, and we'll seemingly claim anyone as 'ours'... (like Brian McFadden).

Can I request Phoenix singles chart placings for the next update please?
^ I don't actually know any of their songs, so have no interest in asking about their peaks. But you could try asking ARIA for them yourself.

All I can tell you is no singles by them charted within the top 100 up until December 2010. At that point, one album (It's Never Been Like That) peaked outside the top 50, within the top 100, at #81, in April 2007.
Here are some more peaks I obtained earlier this year. All are singles. NCH = no chart history:
