After waiting for three weeks at No.2, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis now climbs a spot to land their fourth No.1 single in Australia with their track “Downtown”.
“Downtown” becomes the 1043rd No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2015) and the 478th for ARIA (1983 to 2015), and the fourth chart-topping song for Macklemore’s self-titled record label, as he and his partner Ryan Lewis have notched up three previous No.1’s here, firstly with “Thrift Shop” (from 3-Dec-2012 for 7 weeks), which was knocked off the top by their next release “Same Love” (from 21-Jan-2013 for 4 weeks), whilst they landed their third chart-topper six weeks after the duos second fell from the top, as “Can’t Hold Us” spent a single week at No.1 at the end of March 2013.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have now racked up thirteen weeks at the top this decade, placing them equal fifth for ‘Most Weeks at No.1: 2010’s’, alongside Katy Perry who has also racked up thirteen weeks with her two No.1’s this decade, whilst just ahead on 14 weeks is Flo Rida. And with this track taking only five weeks to reach the top, it matches the five weeks that “Thrift Shop” took to reach No.1, whilst the only other ‘Downtown’ we’ve had at the top of the Australian charts was back on 13th of February in 1965, when “Downtown” by Petula Clark spent a single week at the top (it took seven weeks to hit the top btw). The new No.1 for Macklemore also becomes the 677th for an American Act to hit the top and in the list of ‘Most No.1 Singles’, the pair climb from 73rd to 49th and now sit alongside other US 2010’s acts that have notched up four No.1’s here such as Taylor Swift and Flo Rida.
With Justin Bieber in the country this past week on a promo tour, his No.1 single “What Do You Mean?” drops down a place to No.2, although it is once again the top on the streaming chart (which helped it to hold on last week too), but Nationally it leaves the top spot after four weeks. Leaping up eight places to land at No.3 is Robin Schulz with “Sugar”, which becomes his fifth appearance in the Top 10 (2 as remixer, 3 as an artist) and now his second highest charting single in Australia, as “Headlights” peaked at No.2 back in July, and they are both taken from his new album “Sugar” which debuts at No.31 this week, and by jumping to No.3 it matches the same peak that the original by Baby Bash achieved in its sixth week back on the first week of April 2004, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks.
Holding put at No.4 are R. City and Adam Levine with “Locked Away”, which is helped by Adam’s band Maroon 5 being in the country, and after a couple of weeks at No.3, “Wildest Dreams” for Taylor Swift drops back down two spots to No.5, both tracks picking up a ▲Platinum sales certification too. Back up one spot to No.6 is Nelly and Jeremih with “The Fix” and the second of four new entries to the Top 10 comes from last weeks highest new entry “On My Mind” by Ellie Goulding, which is up eight places to No.7, becoming her sixth Top 10 single in Australia and is helped by her visit to our shores this week, as she played the AFL Grand Final pre-show entertainment on the weekend also.
Jessica Mauboy debuted at No.41 three weeks ago with her new track “This Ain’t Love”, which dropped out of the Top 50 last week, but this week rebounds sixty-seven places to land at No.8 after her performance of the track on X-Factor on Tuesday night, plus it is also helped by the physical CD Single for the track coming out last week. So this now becomes the ninth Top 10 single in Australia for Jessica since she first charted on this week back in 2008 (6-Oct) with “Running Back” (HP-3). OMI is up one place to a new peak of No.9 with his “Hula Hoop” and the highest new entry of the week is at No.10, Sia with her second ever Top 10 debut “Alive”, which is the first track from her forthcoming seventh studio album “This is Acting”. Her previous Top 10 entry was the re-issued version of “Elastic Heart” which debuted at No.8 back in January and this now becomes the seventh Top 10 single here for Sia.
UP: The fourth Top 50 chart entry for Drake now becomes his fourth Top 20 hit in Australia, as “Hotline Bling” jumps up nine spots to No.13, followed by LunchMoney Lewis with “Whip it!” which is up six places to a new peak of No.14, and the current US No.1 single “The Hills” by The Weeknd is up a place to a new chart height of No.15. “Wild” by Troye Sivan is back up four places to No.20 and climbing five to a new peak of No.22 is “Infinity” by One Direction, whilst rapper Dawin is up nine spots to see his “Dessert” rise to No.24 this week. Naughty Boy with Beyonce debuted at No.36 last week with the track “Runnin’ (Lose it All)” which this week rises three places to No.33 and thanks to his promo visit, the Skrillex & Diplo track with Justin Bieber “Where Are U Now” is back up five spots to No.35. The new promos for the third season of ‘Homeland’ are using the Hozier track “Take Me to Church”, which helps the track back up twenty places to No.41 this week.
DOWN: Felix Jaehn had been climbing a couple of places per week with “Ain’t Nobody” (HP-6, WI10-3), but unfortunately this week he falls down five places to No.11 and picks up a Gold (●) in sales as compensation. The Weeknd falls down four spots to No.12 with “Can’t Feel My Face” (HP-2x3, WI10-13), which is also newly certified ▲Platinum after three months within the Top 10. Leaving the Top 10 for the first time is Calvin Harris + Disciples with “How Deep is Your Love” (HP-1x1, WI10-10), down seven to No.16 and tumbling twelve spots to No.17 are Nico & Vinz with “That’s How You Know” (HP-2, WI10-6), which is now ▲Platinum in sales. Vance Joy dives down six to No.18 with “Fire & the Flood” and after two weeks at No.17 Jess Glynne falls down to No.21 with “Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself”. Galantis also leave the Top 20 with “Peanut Butter Jelly”, down five to No.23, whilst Lost Frequencies tumble seven to No.26 with their former No.1 “Are You With Me”, which is now finally ▲Platinum in sales. After two weeks in the Top 20 the new Pink track “Today’s the Day” this week tumbles fourteen spots to No.27 and down seven to No.28 is Sigala with his “Easy Love” track. Adam Lambert and his “Ghost Town” are down seven to No.37 and falling fourteen also is Aston Merrygold with “Get Stupid” to No.45 which picks up a ▲Platinum certification, whilst Sam Feldt drops ten to No.48 with “Show Me Love”.
Earlier this year Birds of Tokyo took their EP “Anchor” to No.23, and this week they see their new single “I'd Go With You Anywhere” debut at No.40, becoming the Perth bands seventh Top 50 and eight Top 100 chart entry. Almost three years ago Adele debuted with the theme song to the 23rd James Bond film “Skyfall” (HP-5, 15-Oct-2012), and now entering at No.44 is Sam Smith with “Writing’s on the Wall” the theme for the 24th Bond film ‘Spectre’ which will be out at the end of October and it becomes the eighth chart entry for Sam. The track debuted at No.1 in the UK (on Friday) becoming the first Bond theme ever to reach the top of the UK charts and is the eighteenth Bond theme to chart in Australia since 1963.
The final Top 50 entry comes in at No.47, “Lay it All on Me” for Rudimental featuring Ed Sheeran, which is their second teaming, as earlier this year Rudimental remixed and appeared on the Ed Sheeran track “Bloodstream” (HP-7, March 2015), and this track is the third entry from their just released second album “We the Generation”, the other track being “Never Let You Go” (HP-54).
Lower 50: “Bad Blood” for Taylor Swift is back up eight spots to No.51 and jumping up to a new peak of No.66, up a massive thirty-two places is Shawn Mendes with “Stitches”. X-Factor judge James Blunt sees his October 2013 No.3 single “Bonfire Heart” return to the charts at No.77 and also back in at No.79 is Duke Dumont with his “Ocean Drive” track. Further returning tracks are “Marvin Gaye” for Charlie Puth & Meghan Trainor (#87) and after falling out last week David Zowie is back in at No.90 with “House Every Weekend” followed by 5 Seconds of Summer at No.97 with “She’s Kinda Hot” and finally “Style” for Taylor Swift (#98).
RUFUS are set to release their as yet untitled second album before the end of the year, and the second track released from the forthcoming set debuts at No.57 entitled “Like an Animal”, which follows on from “You Were Right” (HP-22, peaked July 2015). Little Mix are also debuting with the second release from their forthcoming third album “Get Weird”, the new track “Love Me Like You” comes in at No.89 and follows on from “Black Magic” (HP-8, July 2015). The final new entry comes in at No.99 and is the debut single for US actress Hailee Steinfeld (‘True Grit’/’Pitch Perfect 2’) entitled “Love Myself”, which has so far reached No.15 in the USA.
The fifth studio album for Byron Bay metalcore act Parkway Drive entitled “IRE” becomes the acts fourth Top 10 album and first to make it to No.1 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
“Ire” becomes the 744th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2015) and the 595th for ARIA (1983 to 2015) {meaning ARIA could score their 600th No.1 album by the second week of November if we keep getting new No.1’s on a weekly basis), plus this is the 391st album to debut at No.1 and the first for the Resist record label, plus the album debut at No.23 in the UK chart this week.
Parkway Drive first charted in September of 2005 with their debut set “Killing with a Smile” (HP-39) followed a couple of years later with their second set “Horizons” (debuted & peaked at #6, 15-Oct-2007), followed by “Deep Blue” (debuted & peaked at #2, July 2010) and then their last set was “Atlas” (debuted & peaked #3, November 2012), with their past two albums spending two weeks within the Top 10, first set was for a single week.
There has been no album simply titled ‘Ire’ that has hit the top before and the album becomes the 187th to hit the top for an Australian act, and Parkway Drive become the 99th Aussie Act to make it to the top here, whilst they are the 56th Australian Group to reach No.1 and the album is also the 348th by a Group to make it to the top, the tenth group this year and the fourth Aussie group for 2015 after Hillsong United, Tame Impala and Northlane.
The second album for UK brother duo Disclosure (Howard and Guy Lawrence) debuts at No.2 entitled “Caracal” (it entered at #1 in the UK this week), beating the No.5 peak that their debut set “Settle” achieved back in June of 2013. And another UK EDM act who are beating their first albums peak with their second set are Chvrches and “Every Eye Open” which also came in at No.3 in the UK, and their first entry here was “The Bones of What You Believe” (HP-13, Sept 2013).
“1989” for Taylor Swift is back up a place to No.4 and last weeks No.1 debut for Lana Del Rey, “Honeymoon”, is down four spots to No.5 giving her a third consecutive single-week No.1 album. The No.1 album from two weeks ago “That’s the Spirit” for Bring Me the Horizon is down three places to No.6 and now becomes the bands longest running Top 10 album, with the chart-topping album from five weeks ago, “Beauty Behind the Madness” by The Weeknd down one spot to No.7.
Ed Sheeran holds at No.8 with his “x” album and last weeks No.2 entry “Rattle That Lock” by David Gilmour drops down seven places to No.9 this week. The fourth and final entry to the ten debuts at No.10, Pierce Brothers with “Into the Dirt”, making it the second EP entry for Jack and Pat Pierce, as their first entry was with “The Night Tree” (EP) which made it to No.21 in early July of 2014.
UP: With James Blunt being a judge on the current season of X-Factor, it continues to help his collection “I’ll Take Everything” to climb again this week, up three to a new peak of No.11, whilst N.W.A. are back up five spots to No.12 with their debut album “Straight Outta Compton”. “In the Lonely Hour” for Sam Smith is back up a couple of places to No.33 and will climb again more-so when his re-packaged album comes out in late October, whilst the Maroon 5 tour helps their recent album “V” back up fifteen places to No.46 this week.
DOWN: “The Book of Souls” (HP-2, WI10-3) for Iron Maiden is down six places to No.16 and three of last weeks new entry to the ten all fall out this week, “What a Time to Be Alive” for Drake & Future (4 to 26), “1989” for Ryan Adams (9 to 28) and “I Cry When I Laugh” for Jess Glynne (7 to 32). “Compton” for Dr Dre is down six to No.18 and after peaking at No.18 last week “The Ultimate” for Peter Allen is back down seven to No.25. James Bay drops ten places to No.29 with “Chaos & the Calm” and Slayer fall fourteen places to No.34 with “Repentless”. All falling ten places are Disturbed, Halsey and The Rubens to No.35, No.36 and No.37 respectively, whilst Jarryd James tumbles eighteen places to No.40 with “Thirty One”. Keith Richards first album this century “Crosseyed Heart” plummets twenty-six spots to No.41 and Five Finger Death Punch are down fifteen places to No.43 with “Got Your Six”. Simply Red’s “Song Book” is down fourteen to No.45 and down ten to No.49 are John Farnham and O.N-J. with “Two Strong Hearts”, whilst dropping hard into the lower fifty this week are Chris Cornell (21 to 58), Foals (44 to 59), Jimmy Barnes (47 to 61, newly certified Gold (●) in sales), Hollywood Vampires (46 to 81), The Waifs (48 to 87), Atreyu (29 to 92) and leaving the hundred from last weeks Top 50 are Mac Miller (#32), Dustin Tebbutt (#34), Shinedown (#37), Gabrielle Aplin (#38), Neil Diamond (#40) and Prince (#50).
The self-titled debut album for US rapper Fetty Wap enters at No.13 this week, featuring the current Top 40 track “Trap Queen” (HP-25, TW-36) and last weeks Top 50 entry “679” (HP-46, TW-54), plus the former chart entries ”Again” (HP-63) and “My Way” (HP-94). And helped by their tour are Maroon 5, who debut at No.19 with their newly released collection “Singles”, which contains twelve of their eighteen chart entries here.
New Order see their tenth studio album “Music Complete” debut at No.20 this week, the set entered at #2 in the UK and here it becomes their eighth Top 20 album and first new entry in over ten years, as their eighth album “Waiting for the Sirens’ Call” (HP-15) was their last chart entry back in April of 2005. One place lower at No.21 is the third album for super-group The Dead Weather (lead singer Jack White) called “Dodge and Burn”, which becomes the bands highest charting album here, as they previously entered with “Horehound” (HP-48, July 2009) and “Sea of Cowards” (HP-28, May 2010).
The Silversun Pickups see their fourth album “Better Nature” debut at No.22, one place higher than their third album “Neck of the Woods” (May 2012) debuted and peaked, with the bands best chart entry being their second set “Swoon” (HP-15, April 2009) and overall this becomes their fourth entry, as their debut set “Carnavas” made it to No.65 in July 2007. The final of five consecutive debuts is at No.23, and is the fifth studio album for The Eagles member Don Henley entitled “Cass County”, his first solo album in over fifteen years and his first albums chart entry here since his third album “The End of the Innocence” (July 1989) made it to No.40.
The sixth solo album for The War on Drugs lead singer Kurt Vile called “B’lieve I’m Goin’ Down” enters at No.27 to become his first albums chart entry here. Magnets not debuting is silliness but For A Better Day survived because of it so yay I guess? Cool to see Love Myself make it in, a small rebound for Never Be and the re-entry for Ocean Drive.
ouch for Be Right There indeed but at least it looks like it won't be a one or two weeker like I feared. Great to see Waiting For Love drop though, more of that please!
