I was looking to see if Google Play were going to do something similar to their The Sounds of 2014 promotion where they offered ten of the top selling albums of 2014 for free, when I discovered that typing Free Music in the search bar brings up dozens of free albums, EPs and songs. Some of the most notable ones currently include...
I noticed that a few months ago they were offering 20 greatest hits albums for free, including ones by Bill Withers, Billie Holiday, Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Sam Cooke, Simon & Garfunkel, Tony Bennett and Willie Nelson. Sadly, the promotion is over. Last edited:
They also have The Amity Affliction's last album, and Conrad Sewell's EP at $1.99 from what I can see, though anyone who is a cheapskate and just wants the two songs can get "Who You Lovin'" & "Start Again" at 0.99 each and save 1 cent Last edited:
Heh. I've noticed that on both the Amity Affliction album and Conrad Sewell EP pages that you have the option to buy the whole album/EP for $1.99 OR buy the individual tracks for $2.19 apiece (totalling $21.90 and $10.95 respectively). Gee, I'll lock in A thanks, Eddie!
I've also noticed that the Amity Affliction's I Bring the Weather With Me single is 99 cents too. I wonder how many other 99c tracks are on the site that aren't mentioned on the discount page...
A whole bunch of recent hits I can see are 0.99, but more notably Linkin Park - Numb, Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight, Teamheadkick - Deadpool Rap, Coldplay - Adventure Of A Lifetime, Mashd N Kutcher - My Sunshine, twenty one pilots - Heavydirtysoul, and possibly others are just 10 cents each.
Heh. '10 cents' must be the new 'free' as I haven't seen any recently added songs to the free list in a while.
I should mention that tracks purchased from Google Play seem to attract an extra fee that appears to be about 3% of the track's price. On my bank statements it's called OVERSEAS TXN FEE (overseas taxation fee).
Free tracks don't seem to attract an extra fee which makes sense as 3% of $0.00 is still $0.00 and I doubt you'd be paying any extra for the 10 cent tracks as the tax would be 0.3 cents rounded down to 0 cents.
Incidentally, zdigital.com.au tracks also incur the same OVERSEAS TXN FEE of 3% on my bank statements.
Oh, and there has been a recent-ish addition to the free list but I overlooked it due to its rather dodgy-looking cover ( http://i.imgur.com/CEijXDC.png ). It's possibly an official version of Drake's One Dance and it sounds the same as the original but with an added rap verse by Ms JJ Diamond (whoever that is).
The deal is actually $7 off at the checkout and those particular albums are $7.99 before the discount. There's also 27 other (more expensive) albums that you can get the same discount from instead. Deal ends Thursday.
If anyone was wondering why there hasn't been mention of free/cheap songs or albums in ages, it's because there's been bugger-all on offer. The only one of any note lately would be Through the Dark Restrung from Hilltop Hoods' Drinking From the Sun, Walking Under Stars Restrung album (scroll down to track 15)...
