The end of the year is upon us. It's been one of the most competitive years ever, in regards to the quality of commercial pop/dance songs.
2016 is full of so many catchy and addictive songs, with some ver y memorable lyrics.
Here is where you can post your end of year best songs chart lists. Songs can be from any format, such as iTunes play counts, Google Play downloads, live tracks from music festivals, concerts and award shows and songs in any language, from any country across the world.
Full list will come early next year but the early front runners are:
Adele - Send My Love (To Your New Lover) Fantasia - Ugly Fifth Harmony (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) - Work From Home K. Michelle - Not a Little Bit Masika Kalysha (feat. Fetty Wap) - Andale Samantha Jade - What You Want Tamar Braxton - I Love You
EOYs are so exciting and yet again I have already been working on my 2016 EOY since October. I reckon I'll reveal mine by broadcast at a similar date (18th/19th January) to last year's EOY, since that setup worked really well
At this point in time I have no strong contender and instead a few tracks that could be #1, so I won't reveal anything yet But anyone that follows my chart, my lastie, my twitter or looks at my Spotify chart playlist would have some idea of what will do well. I also look forward to everyone else's EOYs and the combined EOY, as usual
While I didn't have a chart, I did have my favourites:
Alan Walker - Faded Alex Newell, Jess Glynne, DJ Cassidy - Kill The Lights (Audien Remix) Ariana Grande - Into You Audien - Crazy Love Calvin Harris - My Way Carly Rae Jepsen - Store Clean Bandit & Louisa Thompson - Tears Ellie Goulding - Something In The Way You Move Fifth Harmony - Work From Home Galantis - No Money Jon Belion - Woke The F*ck Up Jonas Blue & Dakota - Fast Car Maty Noyes - In My Mind Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter The Chainsmokers & Daya - Don't Let Me Down Zara Larsson - Lush Life Zedd - Ignite
At this point in time it looks like I may not even have a song by an Australian artist in my top 20 But my most recent Australian EOY #1 was 2014 when Peking Duk and Nicole Millar took it out with High, so not that long ago for me
As for the artist with most entries, there's one artist who is pretty much certain to get four entries in the top 100, while another two might also achieve that. A few artists may get at least five entries in the top 200. Exciting stuff
Also don't have a chart and here are some of my favorites:
Mike Posner - I took a Pill in Ibiza (this year's "dancing with tears in eyes" moment) Calvin/Rihanna - This is What You Came For Gnash ft Olivia O'Brien - I hate U, I love U (relatable) Burak Yeter ft Danelle Sandoval - Tuesday (best club song) DNCE - Cake By The Ocean (anti-depressive in song form) AlunaGeorge ft. Popcaan - I'm in control Fifth Harmony - Work From Home Beyonce - Hold Up (but the whole album is great really) Imany - Don't Be So Shy (Filatov & Karas Remix) Garbage - Night Drive Loneliness Kungs, ... - This Girl MØ - Final Song Kygo ft. Maty Noyes - Stay (so blissful) Mahmut Orhan ft. Senna Sener - Feel (classy) Rihanna - Needed Me Britney Spears ft. Tinashe - Slumber Party
Guilty pleasure of the year: Meghan Trainor - Me Too
I'm sure there's more and I'll revise this. Eurovision was great this year, but it's by far the worst for the charts from this decade for me.
I echo that this has been the worst year for popular chart music in a long time. Very bland and nothing inspiring. I'm estimating less than 20% of my EOY will be songs that hit the ARIA top 50 and that's a huge drop.
The top 100 of my 2015 EOY only consisted 16% of ARIA top 50 hits and 2016 looks set to possibly be as low as 2%, although I think it will end up with 4%. Probably won't be a whole lot more ARIA top 50 hits in the 101-200 section of my 2016 EOY either
My top 50 of the year, based upon the charts I do have + general assumptions I had about where the chart would have been/what would have happened! Interestingly the top 4 was impenetrable by two artists. Of the 30 weeks of chart I have, Nick/Shawn took up 22 of those weeks at #1.
The year was an interesting one, with songs consistently dropping off around the 10 week mark, what this meant was that this year longevity proved better for EOY positioning than actual peaks did, and those that achieved both found themselves instantly high up without question.
As well as the charts + predictions, an estimated amount of spotify playing was also taken into account. This list is by no means perfect, with 22 weeks needing to be estimated it's hard to guess if some of these songs would be higher or lower. (That Said, the top 4 were without a doubt not budging, particularly with the #1 spot staying in the top 10 for 28 weeks)
I was going to post this next Saturday but I feel like posting it now.
For the 1st time since 1997 there isn't a single 6* track on my EOY List and on top of that I got my lowest haul of the entire 21st Century (Equal with 2013 which at least had multiple 6*s). Needless to say I definitely won't be following the current music scene for quite a long time after this. The #1 won't be a shock to many. This makes it their 5th EOY topper for me, having also topped my EOY in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2014.
1. COLDPLAY - A Head Full Of Dreams 2. NAKED AND FAMOUS - Laid Low 3. ALAN WALKER - Faded 4. NAKED AND FAMOUS - Higher 5. VANESSA CARLTON - Nothing Where Something Used To Be (Remix) 6. COLDPLAY - Everglow 7. DISTURBED - Sound Of Silence (The highest 4* track) 8. BLINK 182 - Bored Toe Death 9. NAKED AND FAMOUS - Falling 10. DUSTIN TEBUTT - First Light 11. CHARLIE PUTH - One Call Away 12. LUKAS GRAHAM - 7 Years 13. SHANNON NOLL - Who I Am 14. THE VERONICAS - In My Blood 15. NAKED AND FAMOUS - The Runners 16. THE VERONICAS - On Your Side 17. SNAKEHIPS Feat FRIENDS - All My Friends 18. DIA LUPA - Be The One 19. DELTA GOODREM - Dear Life 20. TWENTY ONE PILOTS - Stressed Out 21. RADIOHEAD - Daydreaming 22. THE RUBENS - Hoops 23. LOST FREQUENCIES - Reality 24. ANNA OF THE NORTH - The Dreamers 25. LUKE CHRISTOPHER - Lot To Learn 26. COLDPLAY - Birds 27. ONE REPUBLIC - Wherever I Go 28. ONE REPUBLIC - Future Looks Good
Interesting list LIFTS... oh no, it's sad to hear you won't be following the current music scene after this year... I spend hours a week looking on blogs for great music because as we know, it is out there. I haven't listened to radio or followed the beat of any mainstream chart for more than half a decade now... And trust me when I say that my Top 100 EOY for this year will be of equal if not higher quality for me than in recent years... but that's just my opinion Stoked Shannon Noll got some love, even though the track won't feature in my EOY it was enjoyable none the less... and seemed to have slipped through relatively unnoticed which is a shame. "Faded" is a gem of course, and I'm stoked that you liked the Naked and Famous releases this year... they delivered an album as high a quality as their debut but no one seemed to care which is a real tragedy.
