A new year and oddly enough a new #1 to go with it! Well only in one sense as the incumbent is rather much fresher than the new #1, but that can be the case at this time of year! Anyway, this week welcomes Car Seat Headrest to the winner's table, as "Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales" askews its 1 position a week moving pattern to jump straight from #4 to #1 this week. It's thus good times for the US who can claim the last 4 #1s! As per that, the US also claims the entire top 3 this week, with A Tribe Called Quest sliding to #2, and Maggie Rogers bumped to #3. Some other countries get a go for the rest of the top 5 though, with Sløtface at #4 and PUP at #5, which is a new peak for the latter. Also newly in the top 10 this week is A.B. Original, whose "January 26" continues to climb, now at #9 in its 6th week charting. Childish Gambino is giving the top 10 another go with "Redbone" replacing "Me And Your Mama" in the #11 slot, though he faces competition from K.I.D whose "Taker" is fast rising up to #12.

NEW ENTRIES

You may or may not know this, but "Run The Jewels 3" was released last week and unsurprisingly it is very good. It was released so late in the year that I've done a rare showing of deciding to represent it in my 2017 year end lists when the time comes. I've also spared listening to it too much as I work on those 2016 proceedings, but for now, I'm picking out one of the earlier released singles that WILL represent 2016 (provided it makes the cut). Now you may or may not recall, or have any reason to recall that "Run The Jewels 2" was my favourite album of 2014. My favourite track on it was "Early", which featured the singer BOOTS, who I assume bares no relation to the Captain Commando 7th stage boss who is incapable of falling down or being beaten without cheap tactics. He's turned up on the new album in another cracking role with "2100" which enters at #17. It's the 5th time Run The Jewels have charted.
A song I've been hearing on an ad for a festival in which this band won a competition to play in, but I've never been able to catch the band's name prior until I heard the full song which I found myself enjoying about as much as I'd hoped, even if it's less gazey than I had initially perceived. The Money War get their first chart representation with "Recall" at #31.
Speaking of Australian bands who have won competitions, we've got Vallis Alps, who are best known for their killer single "Young" from 2015, which just narrowly missed my chart at the time. Is it injustice or compensation that sees them get their chart debut with "Fading" this week? Time will tell, though it does forever favour the young. "Fading" is in at #34 anyhow.
Lastly a debut that's been trying for quite a while to get in. It's UK musician SOHN, who is charting for the first time ever with the rather engaging "Conrad" at #39.

Aww at no Legend Has It But nice for Fading and ooh very unlike your chart in recent years for a song to only get a week at #1. Great to see January 26 into the top 10 and TOGETHER also move up.
Listened to RTJ3 again this morning and 2100 still stands out, so yay. Excellent to see Vallis Alps crack the top 40 too and I liked the Recall song. Wow @ Car Seat Headrest #EOYhype but also good jumps for PUP, Childish Gambino and Mitski.
Jan 8th

As tends to be the case, things are probably going to slow down in the quiet times of January, although this week had enough going on for me to get in a typical 4 entries, and two of them even came out this year! The top of the chart doesn't really change though, with Car Seat Headrest holding #1, A Tribe Called Quest at #2 and Maggie Rogers at #3. PUP are able to get a new peak of #4 which pushes "Empire Records" down to #5. Jumping into the top 10 this week is last week's top debut for Run The Jewels. "2100" moves up 7 places to #10 and becomes their 3rd top 10 hit after "Blockbuster Night Pt. 1" and "Born To Shine". Also making big waves this week is actually Camp Cope, who after 10 weeks in the chart, reach a big new peak of #10 with "Done", having previously been as high as #26.

NEW ENTRIES

Now if I said that I have 2 new entries that came out this year, and you know anything about me, and also have been keeping an eye on new music, you probably know exactly which songs I'm talking about. Otherwise I'll put you at ease and introduce London Grammar into the chart, who haven't had a debut since late 2013! 2013 was a year that was kind to them, notably notching a #1 in "Strong". They now pick up their 4th chart entry to date with the especially haunting "Rooting For You" at #18.
Next up is a bit of a holdover from last year, as we see A.B. Original getting a 2nd entry on the chart, this time teaming up with the lovely Thelma Plum on the song "I C U", which I'm really quite surprised isn't more popular as it really sounds like a hit. It comes in at #27 this week.
And of course that other 2017 entry comes from The xx, who follow up their top 10 hit "On Hold" with another wacky sample. At #35 we find the track "Say Something Loving" which is their 5th charting entry to date.
Lastly we have a debutant artist, though one that's been kicking around for quite a while. I've been aware of Clubfeet for several years now without taking *too* much interest though they had the occasional spark of quality. They are of course most famous for having a really sweet video made for one of their songs, and then One Direction coming out with a video a year later using a similar technique, and as per that, "Everything You Wanted" has a rather grim dislike bar, help skew it back the right way if you have the chance. Anyway, this new song "Canyons" feels like a different turn for the band that you can barely recognise, and it has been trying to get into the chart for a few weeks now, and succeeds, landing in at #39.

Great to see Gambino in here! Hopefully he can have a decent run, especially Redbone!
Great #1 still. Good to see Camp Cope/Kaytranada go up and The xx get in.
I couldn't really get into the London Grammar and The xx tracks so much but yay Canyons! I had forgotten Clubfeet were the band ripped off by One Direction Go January 26 and TOGETHER.
The xx's song is good and I hope it pushes up. I can say that for Mitski as well, great album opener We The People.... being so close to the top 5 is excellent, and not surprised at 2100's quick rise into the top 10! Good moves for The Money War and PUP as ewll.

It's a bit of a slow week this week, I have been busy with prepping my end of year list, and there has been a certain week long speedrunning marathon which leads to not a lot of time for music. Car Seat Headrest have #1 for a 3rd week in a row, while Maggie Rogers climbs back up to #2 with "Dog Years". A Tribe Called Quest sit at #3 this week with "Dis Generation", but they also have "We The People...." reaching a new peak of #5. PUP round out the top 5 with "DVP" holding at #4. New into the top 10 this week is K.I.D's "Taker" up from #11 to #10. Despite this slow week, there are some big moves lower down the chart. A.B. Original, SOHN & Clubfeet take strong gains, but totally dwarfed by The xx soaring 16 places to #19 with "Say Something Loving".

NEW ENTRIES

Just the one this week, and it's not particularly new either. After a somewhat lengthy campaign up the bottom end of the chart, Left. manage to take advantage of a slow week with "Midnight" sneaking through at #37.

Listened to the #1, It's an interesting tune. Not necasserily for me, but I'm glad I listened to it anyway. Great to see The XX entries as well as the gambino stuff.
Great to see Childish Gambino still doing well.
For the record comments are appreciated and I really want to reciprocate them, and perhaps will once I am no longer devoting my free time to all Hottest 100 business

I'm very sleepy and Car Seat Headrest are still #1.

NEW ENTRIES

I've frequently making jokes about the relation between The xx and Milky Chance on the flimsy comparison that they both released their lead off singles on the same week and have tracked with comparable success. Imagine if you combined both of those bands together, you'd probably get "Wait" by NoMBe which is in at #24.
Remember back in 2013 when I charted My Bloody Valentine of all bands? Well wouldn't you know that some contemporaries of theirs whose "Souvlaki" album I deeply love just so happen to be doing a similar comeback thingy. Of course I'm talking about Slowdive who see their first ever entry with "Star Roving" at #26.
Lastly we have a familiar face in the chart, so familiar that he got his first debut this year, and it's still on the way up. SOHN makes it to a 2nd entry as "Proof" debuts at #29.

It is so great to see that Royksopp had a very long run in your chart Hijinx! 19 weeks is enough for a Top 40

I dont know any of the other songs, wtf
Slowdive! Now that's a band I need to hear more of, I'll put it on the list I would have no issue in either ATCQ getting to #1, but WTP.... would be especically cool. Also I heard a different SOHN song and didn't think much of it honestly
Jan 29th

There is really not much action to note in the top end of the chart, it's the same 5 songs as it was a fortnight ago. Which means that Car Seat Headrest notch up a 5th week at the top, "Dis Generation" holds #2 while "Dog Years" holds #3. Just below that, PUP swaps places with A Tribe Called Quest again, resulting in "DVP" at #4 and "We The People...." at #5. What's more of note below that is that after 13 weeks on the chart, Camp Cope's "Done" cracks the top 10 in style, landing at #7 this week.

NEW ENTRIES

We've got a lot of fresh faces this week. The first of which is me playing catch up in the sense that I've frequently gotten into Methyl Ethel songs but rather a bit too late to put them on my chart. Things have changed rapidly as I now include a song of theirs that only just came out this week, I'm talking about "Ubu" which enters at #18.
A similar case though not to the same degree. I quite like Hellions' album they put out next year, and thanks to the radio singles continuing on into the new year, I've found myself really getting into their song "Nightliner Rhapsody", so it makes a debut at #24. Let it be known that we don't skimp on diversity here.
The one chart veteran this week is Spoon, and they go way back. They first charted in 2010, and reached the top 5 with their song "The Mystery Zone", and apart from that it's just been gentle jabs into the chart here and there. They instantly have their equal second highest charter with new single "Hot Thoughts" which debuts at #30, their 4th chart entry, and first in over 2 and a half years.
Now we have an artist that may as well be familiar to the chart, as they had a respectable bubbler last year, from a pretty incredible album that should have been better represented. Well now's their chance as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard get their first ever entry at #32 with their latest single "Sleep Drifter".
As Camp Cope reach the top 10 this week, it's worth noting that they just recently released a split EP with the band Cayetana. I haven't gotten to listening to it yet, but one of the latter band's efforts has landed in the chart this week, "Mesa" at #35.

urgh I forget the Hellions song that I liked... I don't think it was that one yayyyyy King Gizzard and Methyl Ethel, yet to hear that Spoon track. go DVP!
Feb 5th

Car Seat Headrest continue to have the only #1 so far this year with "Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales" notching up a 6th week at the top. They have competition with a hotshot debut at #2, but more on that later. A Tribe Called Quest move down to #3 with "Dis Generation", while PUP have their 4th non-consecutive week at #4 with "DVP". Maggie Rogers closes the top 5 with "Dog Years", which has now spent 10 weeks in that upper echelon. New to the top 10 is London Grammar, whose "Rooting For You" becomes their 2nd top 10 hit after "Strong", reaching #9 this week. Methyl Ethel will try to do the same next week with "Ubu", but they don't quite have the biggest mover of the week, that goes to Hellions with "Nightliner Rhapsody" up 6 places to #18.

NEW ENTRIES

I've kind of been holding off on "Run The Jewels 3" for a while, partly because I've been so busy and also because I've primarily been using a computer that doesn't have my music on it. They've had "2100" doing well reaching #6 last week, but that's been eclipsed now by the big new entry for "Thursday In The Danger Room" all the way up at #2. It's a great lyrical track and also features a commendable feature from saxophonist Kamasi Washington. It's their 5th chart entry to date, and also highest charter to date.
Stepping down a little lower, we have a debutant to the charts, with Bonobo having recently released a new album, and featuring a new single which features Nick Murphy, and inherits his fancying for releasing a long song with an edit alongside it. "No Reason" comes through at #22.
Now we have some artists returning to the chart from a variety of stop gaps. For Temples now, this is their first time in the chart since 2014, when they notably picked up a #1 with "Mesmerise", and followed with a top 10 in "Move With The Seasons". They now return to the chart with their 3rd entry "Strange Or Be Forgotten" at #30.
Now we have an artist that really doesn't hurry between entries. I'm talking about Goldfrapp, who I do have a lot of love for, though they've only sparingly made this chart. Firstly in 2010 with "Rocket" barely scraping through, but then returning in a big way with a #1 hit "Drew" in late 2013. They now pick up their 3rd entry "Anymore" at #32, and I await to see if they can finally chart two tracks from the same album.
Now for a third consecutive #1 artist in a row, though the most recent of the batch. I'm talking about Middle Kids who had the longest running entry of the year with "Edge Of Town" which hit #1 in August. They have a 3rd charting entry now with "Never Start" which immediately matches the peak of previous entry "Your Love", meaning it's #35 this week.

One of the things I like least about my job is missing out on commenting on people's personal charts I'm pleased to see Midnight, Wait, No Reason and Anymore (was surprised to not see this last week in fact) debut recently. Good to see Wait move up but ouch I quite like four of the dropouts this week and have charted three of them
Hmm Thursday In The Danger Room doesn't stand out much for me, but then again neither did the album tbh The other four debuts are good, in particular Temples of course, whom I'm glad have made an impact on your chart too. yass rises for Camp Cope, Methyl Ethel, Slowdive, Spoon and King Gizz!
Feb 12th

It's taken a while but 2017 finally has its 2nd #1 hit. Call me a sucker for a poignant lyrical tale (or two), but Run The Jewels' "Thursday In The Danger Room" has really made its mark for me, and becomes their first ever #1 hit. It dispatches Car Seat Headrest after 6 weeks at #1, now sitting at #2. Bolting up to #3, up 10 places is Methyl Ethel with "Ubu", the first time an Australian artist has cracked the top 3 since November last year. PUP thus remain yet again hoisted at #4 with "DVP", while Camp Cope continue their obscenely slow ascent and reach a new height of #5 with "Done".

NEW ENTRIES

I am fully embracing both my /r/triplej and /r/indieheads sides this week as 2017 is really starting to kick into gear. The top debut this week comes from Gang Of Youths, who continue to do no wrong, and find all new chart heights this week with "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?". They reached #14 with "Strange Diseases" last year, now they're debuting straight in at #11.
Another returning artist with a slightly longer absence, we've got Future Islands making their 3rd chart appearance to date. They're best known for the huge top 5 hit "Seasons (Waiting On You)", and maybe they can repeat their fortunes with a strong start at #14 for "Ran".
An even slightly longer absence next, as this week sees the return of Australian post-rock giants sleepmakeswaves. They had a huge hit in 2014 with "Something Like Avalanches" climbing all the way up to #3. Now they finally get a 2nd entry with new single "Tundra" at #22.
Slightly less of a wait now, as we have the return to the charts for Father John Misty, who is seemingly chucking out singles all over the place, but until the album comes out, I'll be satiated with the title track "Pure Comedy", which is as biting as it is beautiful. Entering at #23, it's his 5th chart entry to date.
Lastly we have what is generally agreed to be the most massive tune on the radio at the moment, as SLUMBERJACK team up with Vera Blue of all people to deliver "Fracture". I also like to note that it was co-written by Owl Eyes who has been absent from this chart for far too long for my liking, but I'll take this. It's in at #37.

Go Fracture! The last time there was an Australian artist in my top 3 was May last year when Whenever I'm With You was top 3 Three Australian songs have made it to #4 since then though Good to see Say Something Loving, Wait, No Reason and Anymore move up.
Interesting moves at the top now and go Methyl Ethel!! Really nice to see FJM, Future Islands and Slumberjack debut, and neat moves for King Gizzard, Bonobo, Middle Kids and The xx. Awww come on Slowdive
Feb 19th

It's one of those weeks wherein a vague state of equilibrium has been reached and the top 5 remains the same. Run The Jewels at #1, Car Seat Headrest #2, Methyl Ethel #3, PUP #4 & Camp Cope #5. That's not to say there isn't stuff happening in the chart, just not in the top 5. After all, Gang Of Youths have stormed up to score their first ever top 10, with "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?" at #6. Future Islands are not far off grabbing their 2nd either, while Father John Misty & sleepmakeswaves have good momentum from their debuts to crack the top 20.

NEW ENTRIES

I'm here to slightly alleviate my role in perpetuating the state of Australian female singers who get their biggest hits when they guest on songs by male producers/rappers. So here's Airling getting her first solo entry, and rather high up at #18. She previously guested on "Forces" by Japanese Wallpaper, but now she's in with her own track "Not A Fighter".
Now a new artist to the chart, we have K.Flay who had a bit of a hit last year with "Blood In The Cut", but now it's her latest single that's really caught my attention. The raucous "Black Wave" is in at #30, you don't wanna test her.
Lastly a technical debut even though this is an artist that has worked on two top 10 EOY tracks for me. Talking about Thundercat who of course produced Kimbra's #2 hit "Miracle", as well as Kendrick Lamar's "These Walls", but now he's out on his own with "Friend Zone", which is better than the title may make you think.

My chart is the opposite lately, seems to get a shakeup each week because of a lack of really strong hits And this week I got my first Aussie song in the top 3 since May 2015, thanks Ms Dhu I'm pleased to see Not A Fighter debut and make it in so high already, while the new peaks for No Reason and Fracture are good too. Pity Anymore is already losing momentum, though.
So I think the debuts should be flipped and then they'd be in the right order Interesting to see the top 5 look even more settled than mine and omg Future Islands sharing the same spot! yay FJM, Cayetana and Slumberjack moving up. also come on Slowdive and Spoon, wrong direction
Feb 26th

Stability around the top region continues to a lesser extent. Run The Jewels still see you now at #1 for a 3rd week with "Thursday In The Danger Room", while Car Seat Headrest are in the backseat of this car at #2 with "Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales". Methyl Ethel can only which that this metaphorical hair could be cut so "Ubu" can move up from its peak of #3. Climbing up to a new peak however this week is Gang Of Youths with what continues to be their best charting hit to date, with "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?" up 2 places to #4, while PUP have finally completed their month long 180 on the Don Valley Chartway with "DVP" falling 1 place to #5. We also have a newcomer to the top 10 with Future Islands getting their 2nd ever in "Ran" which is up 4 places to #7. Father John Misty is aiming for his first since 2013 while sleepmakeswaves were last there in 2014. K.Flay has the biggest climb of the week with last week's debut "Black Wave" up 7 places to #23.

NEW ENTRIES

Starting off with some familiar faces this week, firstly so familiar that they hadn't even left yet. Spoon of course had "Hot Thoughts" debuting a month ago to some moderate success, now they get a bit higher with "Can I Sit Next To You" which instantly outpeaks that as it debuts at #20, which is their 5th charting song to date.
Next up we go just a little further back to a band who debuted at the start of the year and dropped out last week. Talking about The Money War who thrilled me with their song "Recall" and its vaguely Arcade Fire-ish groove. Latest single "Stars" has a similarly nostalgic feel to it though I'd not point this one to Arcade Fire. Remains to be seen if they can reach new heights, but for now, "Stars" is in at #28.
Now here's an oddity. For the past few weeks I've been under the strange circumstance of having multiple Jamiroquai singles bubbling under my chart, and this week one of them breaks through, with thanks to their new music being far better than I had any reason to expect. It's like an odyssey of sorts, and so they appear on this chart for the first time ever with "Automaton" at #33.
Finally I don't have much of a story for this one apart from finding it on Spotify and liking it quite a bit. Marika Hackman makes her debut to the chart with "Boyfriend" at #39.

omg Automaton! I was wondering if it were ever going to make it I remembered it as debuting at #32 though, but maybe that's just because #32 is where it debuted on my chart #33 is still awesome though Good to see Fracture move up but apart from that nothing else for me to comment on this week.
Big fan of Spoon's new stuff and I don't mind The Money War and Jamiroquai either, or at least I liked the former's previous chart hit of yours. Pure Comedy appears to be going on a much more conventional run here than for me, therefore I hope that if it gets to the top 10 it can actually do something yay for Temples, Thundercat, Cayetana and Bonobo moving up too.
Mar 5th

Some increased activity in the top echelons of the chart this week. Not at the very top though as Run The Jewels rack up a 4th week at #1 with "Thursday In The Danger Room". Their competition is heating up however, with Methyl Ethel taking "Ubu" up to #2, while Gang Of Youths' "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?" now rides at #3. This is the first time in 5 months that two Australian singles have occupied the top 3 together. Thus Car Seat Headrest are knocked back to #4, while Future Islands climb to #5 with "Ran", their second top 5 peak after "Seasons (Waiting On You)" reached #4. Father John Misty is also in the top 10 now with "Pure Comedy" at #7, which is his 3rd top 10 hit after "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" and "Nancy From Now On". This week also features healthy 7 places climbs for Spoon and The Money War.

NEW ENTRIES

I normally ward them off by this point, but I found a late 2016 single that I love too much to give it no appreciation. And let's be honest, my chart can always use more all-caps artists. So ELKI has her bouncy piano driven pop tune "Golden Age" debuting at #17, and not the last of its kind this week.
Another debutant to follow, though one I've been much longer aware of. I am talking about Denmark's finest Mew, whose back catalogue I have some select love for. They've finally caught onto me with a recent single though, so their "85 Videos" gets in at #26. As Gengahr couldn't quite manage an entry in 2015, this makes them the most popular Pokemon band I think.
Now a song I didn't think I would be debuting this soon, but I've quickly found myself unable to resist its charms. We've got the long awaited return of Lorde who was last seen on the chart in late 2015 alongside Disclosure on "Magnets", and has amassed quite a few hits over those years. Including features, she ticks off a 7th chart entry now with new single "Green Light".
Lastly we have another 2016 track which is sort of disappointing because I only dropped out two 2016 tracks this week, meaning my chart is no more up to date than it was last week. Unlike ELKI though, this is less of a debut, and more of a slow climb from the lower rungs of the chart. It comes courtesy of Big Sean who has appeared in my top 80 so many times I've lost count, though for top 40 this is only his 4th entry. "Bounce Back" comes in at #34.

Green Light! <3 Bounce Back is cool too. Great to see Automaton move up, I hope it can make the top 20.
Ubu would be an interesting #1 but I can see Gang Of Youths leapfrogging them. Great to see Future Islands, FJM, Thundercat, Jamiroquai, Spoon and The Money War all move up. Wasn't huge on 85 Videos but I do like Bounce Back.
Mar 12th

It's now been 5 weeks on top for Run The Jewels, which is one for every word in the title. If they were to use that title as an intimidation factor, the point would be lost this week as last week's #2 "Ubu" has moved down to #3 to be replaced by last week's #3, the rather lengthily titled "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?". Future Islands match their previous best peak as "Ran" climbs to #4, while Car Seat Headrest are still hanging around in the top 5 at #5. Also reaching the top 10 this time are two bands who've been there just once before. For Spoon this is their first outing there since "The Mystery Zone" which was incidentally sitting at #7 at the same time 7 years ago, which is where their new single "Can I Sit Next To You" is this week. The other band returning to these heights is sleepmakeswaves, whose previous hit was "Something Like Avalanches" in 2014. Now they also have "Tundra" as a #9 hit at least.

NEW ENTRIES

Big week for debuts, many coming from artists I wouldn't have expected to see here a few weeks or so prior. The first one comes from Laura Marling, an artist I've always admired and whose albums I usually give a listen to when they come out. She continues to impress me with the way her music has evolved, and I'm singing high praises of her latest album as a result. The song that piqued my interest in particular here was "Always This Way", so that enters the chart this week at #15. She'd only previously charted once with "False Hope" back in 2015, and that only reached #20 so this is instantly her highest charter.
Next up it's an album that's not released until next week, though plenty of it is out and about to be heard. It's also quite a long time between drinks for Milky Chance who haven't been on the chart since their big top 5 hit "Stolen Dance" in 2013. It's been the title track "Blossom" which I've cottoned onto this time, which sounds oddly like Lost Frequencies' "Reality" put through a Milky Chance filter. Nonetheless it scores them their 2nd ever entry at #25 this week.
Next is a track I've been meaning to chart for a little while but have only just now remembered to actually put it on the chart. Nonetheless, we've got the debut appearance on the chart for Stormzy, who is practically paving a music movement as we speak and I couldn't be happier for him. His album also includes a colossal banger in the form of "Big For Your Boots" which I've just been enamoured with lately. It's new in at #29.
Next up we have one of those random tracks that caught me by surprise on the new releases list given it could have easily just been a dull non-event. But as fate would have it, the new collaboration between Yellow motherf**king Claw, DJ Snake & Elliphant is very potent indeed, and features a tremendously strong outro that makes me think of "Told You I'd Be With The Guys" if it were a dance song. For Yellow Claw & Elliphant, this is actually their first time in the chart, while DJ Snake is back for a 3rd time following his 2015 hits "Lean On" and "Middle". "Good Day" debuts at #32 this week.
Now, a more expected artist at this stage, we have the 2nd entry now for Methyl Ethel, who of course have been riding high with their anti-haircut anthem in recent weeks. While that song title was quite brief, they've gone the other way for the next single, with the title "L'Heure des Sorcières" which is the French name for the Anne Rice novel "The Witching Hour", because why not. It debuts at #36 this week.
Next up we have another one of those solo female artists I don't know very much about but I like their song. This one's a very tightly produced track that I have trouble pigeonholing, but is very interesting. "Don't Wait" by Annie Bass is new at #37.
And because I've broken through the oddity of having a Jamiroquai song in my chart, let's not stop at one and add another. They now also have "Cloud 9" at #40.

Have yet to hear that Stormzy song but I do recall liking Good Day and I love seeing Cloud 9 make the chart of course. Great to see rises for Not A Fighter, Fracture, Green Light and Automaton.
wooo Stormzy and Methyl Ethel! not as keen on Cloud 9 but that's only based on 1 play. yass Automaton and Stars both up. Really liking the top 5 at the moment and Gang of Youths would be a good #1.
Mar 19th

Top end of the chart is pretty relaxed at the moment, but perhaps an uprising is on the way? Not yet though, Run The Jewels take up residence for a 6th week with "Thursday In The Danger Room". Gang Of Youths remain just behind with "What Can I Do If There Fire Goes Out?" at #2, while Methyl Ethel also maintain "Ubu"'s #3 position. Spoon see their outright highest ever charter this week with "Can I Sit Next To You" all the way up to #4, while Future Islands have the odd one out of the top 5 for having a song whose length and title are both not obscenely long, "Ran" sitting at #5 this week. The top 10 was also in danger of turning into a sausage-fest last week, but coming to save the day in that regard is Laura Marling whose "Always This Way" climbs up 7 places to #8, her first ever top 10 hit. Similarly healthy climbs this week come from Lorde, Stormzy & Yellow Claw.

NEW ENTRIES

If you are a regular reader of this chart, then you might recall a little song called "Drive" last year by Gretta Ray which took the chart by storm, rightly so as it was my favourite song of last year. It was followed by a respectable lesser hit in "Unwind" which reached #25. The new single is out now and it's perhaps back on that winning form, if nothing else, it can lay claim to debuting higher than "Drive" did. So Gretta Ray gets her 3rd ever entry with "Towers" all the way up at #6.
But she's been in the chart recently, so let's go back to some less familiar faces. This next artist in question has only charted once before and that was at the start of 2009, over 8 years ago now. But, Fleet Foxes are at last back and doing what's expected of them with their lovely, warm harmonies. They're also doing what's not expected of them and introducing their album with a teaser track that is 9 minutes long and has a title I can't even pronounce. Still it does them the goods here, with "Third Of May / Ōdaigahara" debuting at #32, their 2nd ever entry following top 20 hit "White Winter Hymnal".
Lastly, it's that wonderful occasional time where amidst his endless stream of releases, Calvin Harris managed to put out something I can get behind. It'd be easy to credit his guest stars but I don't think that's fair as he definitely stepped up his game this time around. Nonetheless, "Slide" comes through at #37 giving Calvin his 4th ever entry, his first since 2014's "Pray To God". Frank Ocean is more of a chart regular when he puts out music, so this is his 7th entry, while it's the first time in the top 40 for Migos, who came ever so close with "Bad and Boujee" climbing to #42. Feel free to blame Lil Uzi Vert.

still time to comment! ooh Spoon are very high now although I much prefer Hot Thoughts. Good moves for The Money War, Lorde, Big Sean, Stormzy, Methyl Ethel and Jamiroquai.
Mar 26th

It hasn't happened often this year but this week there is a new #1 in town. Having previously scored a top 20 hit last year, Gang Of Youths have gone all the way in 2017 with their track "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?" climbing to the top spot. If you're thinking to yourself that it's quite a mouthful of a title, I'm here to say that it is not the longest title that a #1 has ever had. Depending on whether or not you count spaces, it's the 2nd longest, with the longest either being "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)" or "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings". Nonetheless, it's also the first #1 hit in quite a while, the last one being Gretta Ray's "Drive", which got there by knocking off another song that ended a lengthy drought for Australian #1s. I'm not saying that'll necessarily happen again, but she does have "Towers" climbing up to #3. Inbetween these two songs is Run The Jewels' now former #1 "Thursday In The Danger Room". Spoon hold at #4 with "Can I Sit Next To You", while Methyl Ethel finish off the top 5 with "Ubu", continuing to judge you for your hygiene. There's one change in the top 10 this week and it brings in The Money War's "Stars". The band have only first charted this year and this is their first top 10 hit.

NEW ENTRIES

Depending on your demographic, there's a chance that the big release of the week was Drake's new playlist "More Life". Drake has been relatively absent from the chart of late, so this is his first time debuting in a little over a year, "Views" is not very good. But "More Life" has a bit more going for it. Largely thanks to the fact that worthwhile guests haven't been shunted for more Drake, but that's not to say he's not doing his part either. Case in point with the top debut predictably being "Passionfruit". It makes for his 10th chart entry to date, and surprisingly with its #16 debut, his 2nd highest charter behind only "Hotline Bling".
In a similar sense, depending on your demographic, it might be big news that there's been quite a bit of Gorillaz news this week. This has been quite a long time coming and I do not begrudge you if you cannot recall a Gorillaz era on my chart. As a matter of fact, they had 5 chart entries all up just in 2010, and who's to say they couldn't repeat that when all 4 of their new songs are to my liking. For the time being, they just have one debut, the Vince Staples-assisted "Ascension" at #21.
Back to Drake! I am in this instance a very predictable and obvious person, so like many others, my other highlight is "Get It Together", which features Black Coffee and also Jorja Smith, who had a #35 hit in "Blue Lights" about a year ago. "Get It Together" is in at #26 and makes for 11 Drake entries.
Now for some chart veterans who've been absent for a little while. I'm talking about Cold War Kids who have an interesting distinction of being regular charters, but have never had two debuts in the same year. They started with "Something Is Not Right With Me" in 2008, and now have 6 entries courtesy of new track "So Tied Up", which also features Bishop Briggs though not very prominently. "So Tied Up" is in at #31.
Lastly, we've got Father John Misty in again with another entry from his upcoming album that got leaked ages ago but I haven't heard it yet. It's perhaps my favourite song that insinuates having sex with Taylor Swift, there's context to it I swear. "Total Entertainment Forever" debuts at #34, giving him 6 entries to date.

I wasn't that into Ascension so I hope some of those other Gorillaz tunes can make your top 40 too. Passionfruit is definitely cool stuff however. Pity Not A Fighter is starting to slip but at least Green Light and Slide are moving up.
Naturally at this time of the year I so quickly fall behind with new music, but I at least have heard the Gorillaz songs. To that end, I like Ascension more than the others so yay! Passionfruit is an excellent debut and hopefully it has a nice run for you. Also I should give Laura Marling's album a go. wd Gang of Youths
Apr 2nd

It's a 2nd week at the top now for Gang Of Youths' "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?". We now also have an all Australian top 2 with Gretta Ray's "Towers" climbing to #2. Run The Jewels move down a spot to #3, while Laura Marling enters the top 5 with "Always This Way" at #4. Spoon finish off this section with "Can I Sit Next To You" at #5, down from #4. There are strong moves from some of last week's debuts, with the biggest jump appropriately going to Gorillaz's "Ascension" up 7 places to #14.

NEW ENTRIES

All up it's been a busy few weeks for debuts, which continues with another 5 in now. The first of the lot is the most recently released, but it's fair to say that it was quick to make a strong impression. Kendrick Lamar is taking us on a wild ride with newly debuting "HUMBLE." at #8, adding to his hefty tally to make for 13 chart enries.
But let's not stop on 13, and rather go straight for 14. I've not got long to get my shit together, as noted on "The Heart Part 4" which comes in at #22.
Here's a name that's been long absent from the chart. It was way back in 2011 when Joe Goddard briefly popped in with the rather sublime in hindsight "Gabriel". He's gotten a fair bit higher now with his 2nd ever solo entry, "Home" at #26.
Time to repeat some more artists in the chart, as we have a Gorillaz debut for a 2nd week in a row. This time it's "Andromeda" which features D.R.A.M. who last had a hit here with "Broccoli" last year. For Gorillaz, this brings their tally up to 7 as they debut at #29.
Lastly, it's Lastlings. They've had a bit of action just below the chart, but now they're fortunate enough to sneak in for the first time. "Urges" is a #39 debut.

Quality debutts in Kendrick and Gorillaz. Amazed to see Towers doing so well! Nice to see Passionfruit, Milky Chance, Clavin, London, Laura Marling and Fracture! I've had that Fleet Foxes track on my "to listen list" for a few weeks, I need to get around that.
The debutts this week are pretty great for sure Not sure which Kendrick track I prefer, I'll have to wait for my AP to know that. But both are good. Andromeda and Urges are even better. Good improvements for Passionfruit, Good Day and Slide, but shame to see Green Light is already on the way down.
#1 is very good. Great to see Kendrick slaying and Home is also a bit of a tune.
The K-dot debuts are in the right order obvs. Home is nice too Really hope Gang of Youths can outlast the Gretta Ray song I haven't bothered to hear yet
Apr 9th

Well what would you know, it's new #1 time. And it's a case of deja vu, befitting of the week that J. Cole scored yet another platinum album with no features. How so? Well as I alluded to in previous commentary, last year we had a case of a long drought broken at the top for Australian #1s, which in fact would see two consecutive Australian #1s. And the peculiar case about it is that last year that second one was by Gretta Ray. Wouldn't you know it? She's done it again. "Towers" has become her second #1 hit after "Drive", achieving this with just 3 chart entries under her belt. Not the first time that's happened on this chart, so does that make her the aquatic counterpart for a certain perpetually out of action owl? Well who's more worthy of the aquatic tag is something that could be debated. What cannot be debated is that Gang Of Youths are certainly down to #2 this week, Laura Marling I'm quite positive hits a new peak of #3, forcing down Run The Jewels to #4. Finishing off the top 5 is Kendrick Lamar, who having debuted at #8 last week with "HUMBLE.", now sees a #5 peak, which I believe is his 4th song to get this high. Drake has also climbed into the top 10 with "Passionfruit", only his 2nd ever song to do so, but maybe there's more where that came from as "Get It Together" continues to climb within the top 20.

NEW ENTRIES

Another busy week, it was stacked with quality new releases for me, not to mention slightly older songs that have bubbled into here. The first debut is not one of those, but one that's been anticipated for quite a while, because unlike Kendrick, Melody's Echo Chamber seemingly stuck to the previously announced release date. It's also been a long wait because she's not released anything since "Shirim" in late 2014, which was a top 10 hit for me. All of this anticipation is off the back of my adoration of her self-titled album, and this newest release can only leave me more excited. "Cross My Heart" is an incredibly ambitious odyssey of sorts, complete with flute solo because that's the thing of 2017 I guess? "Cross My Heart" makes a big debut at #6 to give Melody her 2nd ever entry, and 2nd ever top 10 peaker.
Now for a track that's getting quite a bit of buzz lately for good reason. Billie Eilish is something of a prodigy it would seem, and possibly the youngest ever person to reach my chart. It took a little while to sink in for me, but now I'm fully in support of "Bellyache" as it debuts at #20 this week.
Now for an artist that's not been seen in some time, but that's normal behaviour for them. I'm talking about Husky! Their first ever entry was a big one with "The Woods" going on to be a 7 week #1 back at the start of 2012. They wouldn't chart again until seeing moderate success with "I'm Not Coming Back" in 2014. Now with almost the exact same length of time between debuts again, they see a 3rd ever entry with "Ghost" at #26.
Next up is an artist that is pretty new to me though I feel I've seen the name elsewhere before. Talking in this case about Grace Mitchell who sees her first ever chart action with newly released "Now" jumping straight into the chart at #33.
Now for a band that have been absent for a while, ∆! Oh I've missed doing that. Anyhow, despite their status, they've only been able to rack up minor hits on my chart thus far, with "Breezeblocks" reaching #28 and "Hunger Of The Pine" reaching #29. Will "3WW" fare any better? Perhaps the fact that Ellie from Wolf Alice is on it will give them that lucky boost, but nonetheless it's their 3rd entry to date as it comes in at #37.

I can say I like Towers, although not as much as Drive or Unwind. I assume it'll grow though. Bellyache and Now are both good and 3WW was alright iirc. Nice to see HUMBLE. into the top 5, Passionfruit into the top 10 and moves for Big For Your Boots, The Heart Part 4, Andromeda, Slide and Urges as well.

DAMN. Suffice to say that I got my shit together for good reason on Friday, and ended up listening to nothing but Kendrick all day. It's through this that we have a new #1 this week as "HUMBLE." shoots to the top in its 3rd week. This is Kendrick's 2nd ever #1, and he's so all over the chart this week that he also claims the #2 spot with "LUST." but more on that later. Gretta Ray can perhaps be considered lucky to have gotten to the top spot in time as "Towers" now slips down to #3. It's such an incredibly tight week that it almost pains me to only have Melody's Echo Chamber" at #4 with "Cross My Heart". Finishing off the top 5 is the always fitting in Laura Marling with "Always This Way". Gorillaz have also climbed into the top 10 this week with "Ascension", which is their 3rd ever top 10 hit after "Rhinestone Eyes" and "Doncamatic". I'd also like to note that this is an especially fresh chart, with all the remaining 2016 debutants ousted, the oldest song in the chart now is "Ubu" having charted for a ripe time of 12 weeks.

NEW ENTRIES

It's nearly all about Kendrick this week as he put out yet another insanely good album. The song in particular that got the most attention from me was "LUST.", a dour sounding tune produced by BADBADNOTGOOD with some impeccable beat switching. It's a significant debut not just because it's all the way up at #2, but because it gives Kendrick his 15th ever charting entry, which ties him with Birds of Tokyo and Muse for most ever entries.
Did I say ties? Because why not just give Kendrick the record outright as he has another debut up next. Seemingly the fan favourite at the moment, it's the huge banger that is "DNA." coming in at #14. This is Kendrick's 16th ever entry and thus the most out of anyone, all of this achieved in just over 4 years.
But wait, there's more! Perhaps the most baffling one in concept because I don't think anyone expected it. There aren't many credited features on "DAMN.", and the most bizarre of the lot would be on track 11, which features none other than U2. But rather than be something to groan at, it serves as a reminder of how U2 were once a very politically charged band. Also those police sirens just oh mah gahd. "XXX." debuts at #27 and is Kendrick's 17th ever entry, and this is the first time ever charting for U2.
But wait I have other artists here as well. Considering what I noted earlier in the commentary, it's somewhat ironic that this next song is actually from 2016, though it's just recently been released on an album. US singer Alexandra Savior gets her first ever entry with "Shades" at #32.
Lastly it's a long time coming back into the chart for Little Dragon. They've been persistent in attempts to break into the chart post-"Wildfire", including having one of the biggest hits on this chart ever to miss the top 40. Now they've finally got a solo entry to their name as "Sweet" sneaks in at #36.

I guess it was pretty much inevitable that Kendrick would get to #1. I haven't gotten around to hearing any of those Kendrick tracks that have debuted, but I can definitely say it's great to see Sweet making it in! Ascension and Big For Your Boots have been growing on me so good to see them with improvements, while I also like seeing moves for Passionfruit, Bellyache, Andromeda, Now and 3WW.
Nice to see Drake, Alt-J and Fleeties up. I know all the debuts already, surely a first and as for the order of Kendrick debuts... I'll just say I like all of those ones Yay HUMBLE. though. holy crap Shades <3 SWEET YAS.
Apr 23rd

Once again it's Kung Fu Kenny ruling the top slots of the chart, but it's a bit different this week. Namely the order of those slots has changed, with "LUST." moving up a spot to take the top. In the space of a fortnight, Kendrick has tripled his count of #1 hits, and I recommend not extrapolating that. This means that "HUMBLE." is down to #2. Moving up a spot to #3 is Melody's Echo Chamber with "Cross My Heart", swapping with Gretta Ray's "Towers" at #4. Laura Marling continues to hold in the top 5 with "Always This Way". The top two isn't all that Kendrick is busy with though, he in fact has the two biggest climbers of the week. Most notably "DNA." moving up 7 places to #7 giving him a 9th top 10 hit. Perhaps it would be appropriate if his 10th came with the song whose name is all 10's in Roman numerals? It's auspicious that "XXX." climbs up 11 places to #16.

NEW ENTRIES

It's a mix of new and old faces this week. Coming out on top is a new track from Mac Demarco. He's had steady success in the past with previous top 40 entries "Passing Out Pieces" and "Another One", but now "On The Level" enters at #18 which is his first ever top 20 hit.
Next up is the only track this week to get an instant debut, the others being climbers from recent weeks. It comes from UK singer/songwriter Lucy Rose, whose "Is This Called Home" stood out as profoundly artful in composition to me, and nets a #26 debut.
She's missed her chance to perform at any presidential inaugurations in the near future, but George Maple does not lack determination, and has released quite the tune under the name "Kryptonite". All up including features under various names, this is her 5th time in the chart, and her first time back since her What So Not collaboration "Gemini" 2 years ago.
Next up is a bit of a more recent name, in fact they're so recent that their first ever chart entry came in just a month before George Maple's last one. I am of course talking about Tired Lion who continue to rack up the hits, though they're still yet to reach top 10 glory. Could this be their moment? "Cinderella Dracula" is their 5th entry to date at #33.
Lastly another debutant, but just like the last two entries, it's one from Australia. I don't know very much about Sloan Peterson though I suspect that's not her real name because it's suspiciously similar to that of a character from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Her first single "105" is getting airplay apparently though I've not yet caught it on the radio myself, but it's quite good, and enters at #37.

I really should listen to LUST. and XXX. but for now I can say I do quite enjoy DNA. so pleased to see that move up. I was wondering if Kryptonite was close to charting for you, I'm very pleased that it debuted this week. Good rises for Ascension, Bellyache, Andromeda and Now.
Kung Fu Kenny I just found out Sloan Peterson is a band.
That one & Tired Lion are good debuts.
gooo Kenny. LUST. is a grower but definitely would have preferred HUMBLE. to stick around longer. Yay for the other two moving up also. Alexandra Savior, Fleeties, Alt-J and Little Dragon getting new peaks is sweet. Haven't heard that Mac tune but hopefully it's better than the last one
Apr 30th

This time around, Kendrick is able to maintain the top spot, so "LUST." makes 2 weeks at #1. There's a different contender on the rise though, with Melody's Echo Chamber up to #2 with "Cross My Heart". So "HUMBLE." slides down a spot to #3, meeting up with "Towers" which remains at #4. Climbing into the top 5 this week is "DNA." This means that Kendrick has 3 tracks in the top 5, which hasn't happened since Muse achieved the feat in 2009. If that's not enough, he also has "XXX." up to #10 which is his 10th top 10 hit, and U2's first. I suspect this is also a record that only Muse has achieved, when they had "Uprising", "Unnatural Selection", "Resistance" and "United States Of Eurasia" all in the top 10 for a week in 2009. Potentially on the way to the top 10, Billie Eilish is up to #11 and Mac Demarco is up to #13, for both artists this is as high as they've ever charted.

NEW ENTRIES

On the topic of artists accumulating multiple top 5 & top 10 hits in a short space of time, here's an artist we've not seen on the chart in quite a few years. I'm talking about Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir, who picked up three big top 10 hits in short succession in 2014. He's not charted since, until now. Latest track "Afterglow" has really struck a chord with me, and gives him his 4th ever entry at #15.
Actually it's a bit of a similar case with our next artist. Much more recently, Sampa The Great collected some big hits at the start of last year, most notably top 5 hits "Black Dignity" and "Second Heartbeat". After roughly a year of absence, she's back with a new single "Everybody's Hero". Intriguingly, it seems to feature Estelle of "American Boy" fame, though I haven't yet been able to work out where she appears in the song. Nonetheless, it's a new entry at #21 this week, and the 4th entry overall for Sampa.
Next up it's a newbie to the chart. The newest track from Benjamin Booker really caught my ear when I heard it, reminding me of some stuff like former #2 hit "Summer Waiting" by The Novocaines. I love a visceral rock track and "Right On You" comes in at #30.
Lastly we have what is probably my favourite track from the new Goldfrapp album. They recently charted with lead single "Anymore" at #30, this time around it's the final track on the album, "Ocean", which enters at #33. This is the 4th Goldfrapp song to chart.

Love seeing Passionfruit in the top ten and Kryptonite moving up. And yay for new Goldfrapp.
Great to see DNA., Ascension, Bellyache, Now, Andromeda and Kryptonite move up
May 7th

It's been 3 weeks and I still need some water. "LUST." continues to reign supreme. Melody's Echo Chamber also holds the #2 spot and becomes the oddity in the top 4 for not being a Kendrick song. As it were, "DNA." climbs to #3 and "HUMBLE." shifts down to #4. Finishing the top 5 this week is Gretta Ray's "Towers", down from #4 last week. We've got two songs jumping into the top 10 this week. The first is Ásgeir's "Afterglow", which continues his perfect run of top 10 entries, as it's his 4th. Also moving into the top 10 is the debut hit for Billie Eilish, with "Bellyache" up 1 spot to #10.

NEW ENTRIES

A lot can change in a week. My last chart felt outdated pretty quickly just because this next song wasn't on it. In that short time, I've really become enamoured by Lil Uzi Vert's "XO TOUR Llif3", which is something of a surprise considering the last time I mentioned him in my commentary was to make fun of him. There's not much in the way of 'fun' here with what is one of the most confronting current hits. It's his first time charting, and in all the way up at #14.
Now we've got something of an iconic artist returning to the chart as they tend to on a semi-regular basis. I am this time talking about LCD Soundsystem, who've made a very pleasant surprise with releasing two new singles. I've thus far only heard "call the police" but it's proven very rewarding, particularly as it reminds me a lot of "All My Friends". This is the group's 3rd charting single after 2010's "I Can Change" and 2015's "Christmas Will Break Your Heart". By entering at #19, it's their highest charting track ever.
We had a flashback to 2008 last week with Estelle charting, and now it's happening again in an even more unexpected way. Entering the chart this week is "Nobody" by Niia, who you might recall for featuring on Wyclef Jean's "Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)" all those years ago. Not that you'd be able to figure that out by ear at all, we've got quite a forward-thinking pop track on our hands here. "Nobody" is Niia's first ever entry, in at #24 this week.
Another returning artist to the chart now, we've got Sløtface with a new single. The band charted late last year with a big top 5 hit in "Empire Records", and now they've struck gold again with new single "Magazine" being a bundle of fun. Debuting at #29, it's their 2nd ever entry.
A bit of an exceedingly hyped up artist at the moment, but I'll always appreciate when I can get down with someone who's probably gonna get a major push at some point. This time around I'm talking about Ruby Fields, whose first single "I Want" very quickly took the triple j sphere by storm. It has a peculiarness to it in that it really reminds me of a certain artist, it's in at #37.
While I continue to dwell on who that particular artist it reminds me of, we've lastly got a debut for Ali Barter, her first entry since releasing her debut album earlier this year. It would seem that "Please Stay" is getting the single push at the moment, but I'm hoping "The Captain" will get some attention later. It's her 4th entry to date and in at #39.

The rise for Stardust is so amazing. I love it! Yay for Laura Marling, George Maple, Kendrick and Drake too. I was wondering if Leisure Suite has made any progress or nah? Also let me know if you've gotten around to Thinking of a Place
Would be cool to see Cross My Heart and/or DNA. reach the top. Great to see call the police and Nobody debut. Bellyache pushing its way into the top 10 is brilliant too. But a shame that Kryptonite is already losing momentum.
May 14th

Settling into a staircase of non-movers at the moment. For a 4th week we've got "LUST." at #1, while "Cross My Heart" has its 3rd week at #2. "DNA." also holds at #3, while we have a new mover into the top 5, Asgeir's "Afterglow" at #4, which is his 4th song to reach the top 5. Finishing off the top 5 is of course another Kendrick song in "HUMBLE.". We've also got a new song joining the top 10 this week, in its 4th week on the chart, Mac Demarco's "On The Level" has moved up to #9 to give him his first ever top 10 hit. Also chasing their first top 10 hits are Lil Uzi Vert, LCD Soundsystem & Tired Lion. Making a big jump up the chart this week is Sløtface's debut from last week, "Magazine" is up 10 places to #19.

NEW ENTRIES

A chart regular in recent years now, WAAX have put out another quality single and I'm quick to get behind it. I tend to pair the band with Tired Lion as they've both been picking up hits at about the same pace, though WAAX have tended to chart a bit higher. They've now matched up again at 5 entries a piece as WAAX enter at #21 with "Wild & Weak".
Next up is a bit of a longer return, in fact the last time this band was on the chart, WAAX had yet to have their debut entry. I'm of course talking about The National, who have had respectable success this decade. With their new single "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness", they've now got 6 chart entries to their name, this one coming in at #24.
It's now a return to our favourite microgenre, obscure female singers from New Zealand who pop up on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist. This one is slightly less obvious because the name & song give the impression of a band, nonetheless Fazerdaze is tapping my sort of territory with her hazey garage rock. "Misread" comes in at #29.
Lastly it's another return to the chart, and from a band who have been gone even longer than The National. This honour goes to Royal Blood, who put out a debut album in 2014 that I enjoyed quite a lot. Their most recent chart entry was actually a #1 hit in "Ten Tonne Skeleton", but now they pick up a 3rd entry with "Lights Out" at #37.

XO TOUR Llif3 needs more time to grow but it's certainly not bad. I like seeing call the police, Now, Nobody and Kryptonite move up.
LUST. has become much more respected for me now, just love it. Good to see Lil Uzi Vert and XXX. move up, and decent debuts for WAAX, The National and Royal Blood. 3WW's lack of recognition on this site tho
May 21st

I've been hard at work on an older EOY, and perhaps as a result of it, we've got a fair bit of stability at the top, the most in some 6 years. The whole top 7 is the same as last week, giving "LUST." a 5th week at #1, "Cross My Heart" a 4th week at #2, "DNA." a 3rd week at #3, followed by "Afterglow" and "HUMBLE." at #4 & #5 respectively. The top 10 isn't all dullsville though, we've got two new songs joining in this week. Firstly it's the huge breakout success of Lil Uzi Vert's "XO TOUR Llif3" which climbs up 2 places to #9, and it's followed by Sampa The Great who gets her 3rd top 10 hit to date with "Everybody's Hero" at #10.

NEW ENTRIES

Welcome to remnants of songs from last week partly because I was too lazy to listen to new music this week (I really just wanted to finish DR2). So now to introduce my new four dark devas of destruction, we're starting with something of a familiar face. In fact you might recall that back in 2015, Ainslie Wills scored a #1 hit with the beautiful "Constellations". After a slight absence, she's back in the chart this week with the similarly lovely "Running Second". This is I believe her 3rd entry to date and it's in at #20.
Just like last week we've got one newbie to the chart this week, though it's actually a more recognisable name this time around. Since Muse can't deliver the goods, we've got to hand it off to their low key imitators. What I'm trying to say is that after some flashes of quality on their first album, Nothing But Thieves have really come up with the goods on their newest single "Amsterdam". Reaching the chart for the first time ever, they're in at #23. Please return his heart if you see it villages.
I am of the opinion that the best songs on Flume's most recent album are the ones that feature Kučka on vocals. This next entry comes in all pandering glory as it also features Kučka, so "Hyperreal" debuts at #32. For Flume this is his 6th entry, and for Kučka it's her 4th, all but 1 being as a featured artist.
Lastly, it's an artist so familiar that they're still already in the chart. I'm talking about Goldfrapp who score yet another entry from their most recent album with "Moon In Your Mouth". It's their 3rd entry this year and 5th overall, entering at #36.

Yeah that new Muse song is pretty disappointing isn't it. I don't think it will sneak into my chart but I'll give it a few more chances first.
LUST. has grown to be one of my faves from DAMN. Good to see it at #1. I also like all the new entries!
Hyperreal! Brilliant to see it make it in. Still hoping Cross My Heart or DNA. can get to the top. I see the top of your chart has become stuck, not that dissimilar to my chart last week. At least call the police and Nobody are making good improvements.
Hyperreal! Wasn't overly impressed on first listen by Running Second but won't give up on it. Nice moves for Royal Blood, The National and WAAX. LUST. is sensational and yass Lil Uzi Vert in the top 10!
May 28th

We have a new #1 this week! It comes from Melody's Echo Chamber with the blissful "Cross My Heart". It replaces "LUST." which after 5 weeks at #1, falls back to #2. "DNA." & "Afterglow" still hold their places at #3 & #4, while jumping into the top 5 this week is Sampa The Great's "Everybody's Hero". Otherwise, the top 10 on the whole is unchanged this week, with plenty of contenders knocking on the door.

NEW ENTRIES

I like the new Beach House song and in other news the sky is blue. Newly released "The Chariot" is a previously unreleased song recorded during the "Depression Cherry" sessions and is on an upcoming compilation. Coming in at #21, it's their 8th song to chart to date.
They've been in the chart rather recently, but just like with their last album, Δ are chucking out new singles frequently. With new track "Adeline", they have a chance at reaching new heights as it comes through at #29, their 4th entry to date.
This last one sounds a bit strange, but we've actually got a new song from, of all people, the boss of XL Recordings, Richard Russell. Under the moniker Everything is Recorded, he's recently released an EP, which features the rather captivating "Close But Not Quite" which features a great performance from Sampha. It's Sampha's 2nd time in the chart, and it's in at #33.

Cross My Heart! My favourite #1 of yours since Dog Years. call the police getting closer to the top 10 and the gain for Hyperreal is brilliant too.
oh wow Melody's Echo Chamber. Interesting movements across the chart, and hopefully WAAX, The National and Flume keep it going.
Jun 4th

Stability at the top this time, Melody's Echo Chamber gets a 2nd week with "Cross My Heart". Kendrick Lamar still has the rest of the top 3, with "LUST." at #2 and "DNA." at #3. Moving up is Sampa The Great, who gets her highest ever lead artist track with "Everybody's Hero" at #4, moving "Afterglow" down to #5. Two tracks jump into the top 10 this week, firstly Ainslie Wills with "Running Second", incidentally her 2nd top 10 hit to date. There's also LCD Soundsystem who get their first ever top 10 hit with "call the police" at #10.

NEW ENTRIES

Big week for debuts, considering that 3 of these artists have had EOY #1s. In fact this first artist has had 2 of them. I'm of course talking about ABBArcade Fire and their new track "Everything Now", which shoots in at #19. This is their 7th chart entry, and their first since 2013.
Following up their top 10 success, LCD Soundsystem have another entry now, the accompanied "american dream" which comes in at #26, their 4th entry to date.
Now for a song that is about as long as those last two put together, which aren't particularly short songs in that sense. It's the infamous "Thinking Of A Place" from Sun Kil Moon enthusiasts The War On Drugs, coming in at #32. This is their 3rd entry to date.
Lastly is the one artist without an EOY #1, but let's be fair they've got some big hits coming up when I get to the appropriate year. It's a slightly belated debut for At The Drive-In's photogenic "Incurably Innocent" at #34.

Not so keen on Thinking Of A Place but Everything Now has impressed me quickly. Great to see it straight into the top 20! Yay XO TOUR Llif3, call the police and Hyperreal.
Great #1 & very good new entries.
INCURABLY INNOCENT SLAY. Great to see Arcade Fire in and I like Thinking Of A Place even if it isn't my favourite recent TWOD song. Good moves for Everything Is Recorded, Goldfrapp, WAAX, Beach House, The National and Flume.
Jun 11th

3rd week at the top for Melody's Echo Chamber. Kendrick still holds up high with "LUST." at #2, while jumping up this week is Ainslie Wills, whose "Running Second" is running second in the running for running second. In other words she's #3 this week. "DNA." slips down a spot to #4, and "Everybody's Hero" sits at #5. Climbing into the top 10 this week is Sløtface and their song "Magazine", their 2nd top 10 hit after last year's "Empire Records".

NEW ENTRIES

Last week we had my favourite Canadians debuting at #19 and wouldn't you know we've got a similar case this week. I'm noted as something of a Metric fan, and in lieu of new music from them, we've instead got new music from Emily Haines' solo project. "Fatal Gift" is very much in my wheelhouse and comes in at #19.
London Grammar recently released their 2nd album and it's a little bit of a mixed bag. A lot of their recent singles haven't really grabbed me, but the latest, "Everyone Else" is doing a bit better for me. This follows them scoring a top 10 hit earlier in the year with "Rooting For You", and now they're up to 5 entries with "Everyone Else" debuting at #24.
Having charted slightly more recently is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, but in saying that, their last entry was a full album ago. Now they're got a 2nd album this year out this month, and "The Lord Of Lightning" sounds peculiarly like an offcut from "Nonagon Infinity", not a bad thing by my books. "The Lord Of Lightning" is their 2nd ever entry, in at #35.
This week we say goodbye to "Ghost" by Husky, but all is good because they've got a replacement this week. "Splinters In The Fire" debuts at #38 and is their 4th entry ever.

The Captain At least it had a palindromic top 40 run.
I like those London Grammer & Gizza Gizza tunes + plenty of stuff i like moving up.
Cross My Heart still at #1 is great and I like seeing call the police and Everything Now move up.
Jun 18th

This week we have a new #1. It's something of an old face in that department, as Ainslie Wills picks up her 2nd #1 hit with "Running Second", up 2 places from #3 last week. This is the 2nd time an Australian track has hit the top spot this year, following "Towers". Melody's Echo Chamber goes back down to #2, while Kendrick's "LUST." is down to #3. Lil Uzi Vert has now moved up into the top 5 with "XO TOUR Llif3" up two places to #4, while Kendrick can celebrate his birthday with still two tracks in the top 5, as "DNA." finishes at #5. We've also got two new tracks entering the top 10 this week. First off is a big first time entry for Nothing But Thieves, whose "Amsterdam" is now up 4 places to #7, while on the other hand we have familiar territory for Arcade Fire. "Everything Now" is up 5 places to #9, which gives them a 5th top 10 hit.

NEW ENTRIES

It's another week of generally familiar faces in the debuts, many of them with the same amount of chart experience. Leading the pack this week is Manchester Orchestra, who have a habit of getting a new chart entry every few years. They're consistent hitmakers though, as all 3 of their previous chart entries reached the top 10, the highest being the #2 peaker "I've Got Friends". We now see if they can do it for a 4th time as "The Gold" enters at #24.
Now for another band getting their 4th entry, though having done it much more quickly, we have The War On Drugs. They haven't been absent from the chart lately as "Thinking Of A Place" also resides in the top 30 at the moment, but they add to their collection with "Holding On" jumping in at #25.
More of a new face, though not her first time in the chart. We have Pixx who regularly pops up on my Spotify horizons with songs I like. Most notably of these was her song "Grip" which reached #34 back in October last year. She may have new heights in sight as "Waterslides" instantly reaches that same #34 position.
Lastly, we have Royal Blood returning for a second innings for this year. Lead off single "Lights Out" reached #35 recently, but perhaps they can do better with "Hook, Line and Sinker". I've not yet listened to their new album so maybe there's more quality waiting in the wings, but their 4th entry to date lands at #37.

I'm still waiting for an Aussie #1 since The Trouble With Us. Counting on KLP to end the drought for me Have yet to hear the new #1 but I'm liking the rises for XO TOUR Llif3, Everything Now and Hyperreal.
Holding On is good! not totally sold on your #1 but I will relisten. Great to see Everything Now get top 10 pretty quickly; hoping it goes higher of course. Also cool on the Beach House, The National, Flume, King Gizzard, Husky and ATDI fronts.
Jun 25th

It's another one of those weeks where the top sits still while the business continues below. No we don't have The Avalanches at #1, but we do have another Australian artist beginning with the letter A as Ainslie Wills spends an apt second week at the top with "Running Second". Following her we have Melody's Echo Chamber, who has not yet followed up "Cross My Heart" so it's all I've got at this stage. Kendrick Lamar holds the #3 slot with "LUST.", having spent all of its 11 week run in the top 3, while Lil Uzi Vert is also steady at #4 with "XO TOUR Llif3" despite having a weird title. Bringing the Rawk Hawk to the top 5 this week is Nothing But Thieves, whose "Amsterdam" is up 2 places to #5. We also have two newbies to the top 10 though they're far from strangers in this instance. Although I guess if you're the kind of person who'd say CeeLo Green is a one hit wonder twice, then you'd say that this is the first time that Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton have been in the top 10, with "Fatal Gift" up 4 places to #7. But of course I would rather acutely note that she's also been in these reaches a further 5 times with Metric between 2009 and 2012. Now with less of a technicality, we also have Beach House climbing up 4 places to #10 with "Chariot". This is the 6th time they've done Baltimore proud, having scored their first top 10 back in 2012. Also making a big move this week is The War On Drugs, whose "Holding On" shoots up 10 places to #15.

NEW ENTRIES

For the first time in a while, this is a good week for songs that people have actually heard. Most notably the top debut which is currently smashing into all the charts. It means for the first time ever, I welcome DJ Khaled to the chart, though he did previously bubble under with "Holy Key" and "Do You Mind" last year. But thanks to the combination of an excellent Santana sample, Rihanna being generally awesome & Bryson Tiller referencing an Adam Sandler movie, which is obviously never a bad thing, "Wild Thoughts" debuts big at #21. Oddly enough, this is the first time Rihanna has charted as a featured artist, but it's her 4th entry overall.
Next up is a history defining moment, as it would appear to be the first time that Manchester Orchestra have charted two songs from the same album, as usually they never get past the lead single. But nonetheless, right after last week's debut for "The Gold", they've put out another indefinite article song in "The Alien" which has also been quick to impress. It enters one place lower than "The Gold" did last week, at #25 and is the band's 5th ever chart entry.
Next up we've had a band who've been out of action for a while, but now they're back with enough gusto that I can proudly proclaim my chart to be USDA certified lean. I'm of course talking about The Killers, who despite not including an ill-advised Elton John sample, have struck gold with "The Man", in at #28 this week. The last time they were seen on the chart was with 2013's "Shot At The Night", and this gives them their 7th entry to date.
Another newbie to the chart, and it's yet another big pop hit that expertly samples a previous one. This time around I'm talking about the best bassline in the charts courtesy of Talking Heads via Selena Gomez. Unlike DJ Khaled, Selena has never been on my chart radar previously, though I do have a soft spot for "Love You Like A Love Song" among others. Nonetheless, between this & "It Ain't Me", she's been a force of good on the charts this year, and "Bad Liar" enters at #33 this week.
Lastly we're back to typical affair as Husky notch up yet another chart entry from their latest album. This time it doesn't quite come at expense of their previous one, which hangs on at #40 this week. "Shark Fin" enters at #37, giving the band their 5th entry, which is not bad considering that they spent 2.5 years as a one hit wonder.
