Ed Sheeran creates another new chart record this week with his No.1 song "Shape of You", as it now holds for a record breaking thirteenth week at No.1, now the longest stint at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart for this century, and the equal-longest during the ARIA Chart history (1983 to 2017).

"Shape of You" now becomes the longest running No.1 for this decade, century and is now the second longest running No.1 during the weekly chart period from 1949 to 2017. At No.1 for the most weeks (weekly charts from 1949; 1940 to 1948 were monthly charts) are ABBA with "Fernando", which began its fourteen week run at the top this past week in 1976 (5th April), and now in equal second place are Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" along with the other ARIA longest-runner "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio feat L.V. (from 22nd October, 1995) and the first 13 weeker in "Hey Jude"/"Revolution" for The Beatles (pre-ARIA, from 5th October, 1968).

The other thing that 'Shape' does is become the longest running No.1 from debuting in the top position too, as prior to this feat, Eminem's "Lose Yourself" debuted and stayed at No.1 for twelve straight weeks from the 9th of December in 2002, now Ed has eclipsed that feat. Plus Ed now moves from equal thirty-fifth to now equal 33rd on the list for 'Most Weeks at No.1: 1940 to 2017' alongside the 19 weeks accumulated by Katy Perry (3 #1's) and LMFAO (with 2 #1's), and on the similar list 'Most Weeks at No.1; 2010's' he is now equal third for this decade at 19 weeks (along side the aforementioned LMFAO), his next goal for this decade is to beat the 21 weeks notched up by Pharrell Williams, whilst Rihanna leads the list for this decade on 23 weeks at the top in Australia.

During 2017 we have had Ed Sheeran at No.1 and No.2 for ten of the past thirteen weeks (since Jan 16th, the other three weeks were occupied by The Chainsmokers with Coldplay), and he does it again this week (for that tenth week), as his former Irish No.1 single "Galway Girl" jumps up seven places to land a new peak of No.2, his other #2's were "Castle on the Hill" (8 wks) and "How Do You Feel (Paean)" (1 wk), and this also becomes his seventh Top 2 single here in Australia, and his third entry within the Top 10 this week, as "Castle on the Hill" book-ends the Top 10, down four to No.10 this week.

That other non-Ed No.2 in "Something Just Like This" for The Chainsmokers and Coldplay has now racked up three broken weeks at two, and this week is down one to No.3, whilst The Chains' new album just came out as of Friday. Ed's 'Galway' jump also pushes down "Stay" for Zedd and Alessia Cara and "Passionfruit" by Drake down a single place to No.4 and No.5 respectively.

The highest new entry of the week is "Humble" at No.6 for Kendrick Lamar, the second track lifted from his April 14th due fourth album (no title known as yet), following on from last weeks entry "The Heart Part 4" (TW-74). This becomes Kendrick's fourth Top 10 placement in Australia, but his first as a lead artist, as the previous three were all as guest artists, "Bad Blood" (HP-1) for Taylor Swift in 2015, and last year Sia's "The Greatest" (HP-2) and on Maroon 5's "Don't Wanna Know" (HP-6). Bruno Mars peaked at No.5 last week with "That's What I Like", and this week it falls back down two spots to No.7, whilst down a single place each are Lorde and "Green Light" to No.8 and "It Ain't Me"for Kygo & Selena Gomez to No.9.

* Holding for a third straight week at its peak of No.12 are Jax Jones and Raye with "You Don't Know Me".
* After leaping into the Top 20 last week its only a four place climb this week for "Symphony" by Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson, up to a new peak of No.14, giving her a sixth Top 20 hit.
* Little Mix appeared on The Late Late Show this past week, and with a pending tour, their current single "Touch" (HP-13) is back up five places to No.21.
* Last weeks new Zayn track "Still Got Time" is up one place to a new peak of No.20.
* Future has three songs within the Top 50 this week, two of which are climbers; first is "Mask Off", which jumps ten places to a new peak of No.22, whilst his Rihanna duet "Selfish" (HP-39) is back up fourteen places to No.43 this week.
* The DVD and Blu-ray release of 'Moana' occured on the 29th of March here, and the lead single from the movie "How Far I'll Go" (HP-15) for Alessia Cara jumps back up seven to No.23, the Auli'i Cravalho verson of the same song is back up twenty-four spots to No.72, whilst the Dwayne Johnson track "You're Welcome" (HP-77) from the film returns to the Top 100 at No.99.
* The last No.1 single in Australia prior to Ed Sheeran is back up four places to No.32, that track being "Rockabye" for Clean Bandit with Sean Paul & Anne-Marie.
* The 25th Top 40 entry for Jason DeRulo sees his current single "Swalla" leap up eighteen places to a new peak of No.34 (all of Jason's Top 50 entries have climbed into the Top 40 or higher).
* Rag'N'Bone Man was on the 3rd of April screened edition of Graham Norton Show, which has helped his initial entry "Human" to jump back up twenty-nine places this week to No.38.
* Late last October, local singer Dean Lewis charted with his first entry "Waves", which made it to No.63, and now this week thanks to a new remix, the track is back into the charts at a new peak of No.50.
* Kyle again climbs a single place (for the second week in a row) with his first entry "iSpy" to No.59.
* Flume climbed back up the chart twelve places to No.83 last week with his multi-award-winning track "Never Be Like You", which again climbs this week up eight to No.75, and with his new remix album out as of Friday, it could move back up again next week.
* Post Malone debuted at No.87 five weeks ago, then fell as low as No.90 with "Congratulations", which this week is up seven spots to a new peak of No.83.
* Ed Sheeran is one week shy of tying two chart records, one is the equal-longest running No.1 single, the other is having the equal-longest charting single, as "Thinking Out Loud" is back up two places to No.89 in its 122nd week within the Top 100. At the moment the record is 123 weeks for the Vance Joy song "Riptide".
* Other than Dean Lewis and Dwayne Johnson's re-entries, there are two more tracks returning to the Top 100 this week, Isaiah and "It's Gotta Be You" is back in at No.92, thanks to his current support on the Jessica Mauboy national tour, and sneaking back in #100 are The Chainsmokers and Daya with "Don't Let Me Down".

* The only song leaving the Top 10 this week is "Issues" (HP-5, WI10-8) for Julia Michaels, which drops only a single place to No.11.
* After peaking at No.11 last week, Calvin Harris' "Slide" is down two places to No.13, as his new track debuts at No.24 this week.
* Both falling two places each, and both achieveing ▲Platinum in sales are "Scared to Be Lonely" for Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa, and "Chained to the Rhythm" for Katy Perry with Skip Marley, which are down to No.16 and No.17 respectively.
* Falling ten places to No.29 is the Zayn and Taylor Swift duet "I Don't Wanna Live Forever".
* Down nine to No.40 are Stargate with Sia and Pink and their collaboration "Waterfall".
* Sheppard drop back down eleven places to No.48 with their new single "Make Me Crazy".
* Dropping eleven places and into the lower fifty at No.52, are Mura Masa and A$AP Rocky with "Lovesick".
* After returning to the Top 50 last week, Drake's "Fake Love" is back down nine places to No.56.
* Last weeks debut for David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Lil' Wayne collaboration falls a massive thirty one places this week to No.60.
* Milky Chance with "Cocoon" and Sage the Gemini with "Now and Later" both fall twelve places apiece to No.67 and No.68 respectively.
* Kendrick Lamar also debuted in the Top 40 last week with "The Heart Part 4", which this week tumbles down thirty-nine spots to No.74.
* After returning to the Top 100 last week, the Ariana Grande and John Legend remake of "Beauty and the Beast" drops back down eighteen spots to No.82.
* Chris Brown's "Privacy" drops twenty-six places to No.87 from last weeks debut at No.61.
* Adele's "Hello" drops fourteen places to No.91.
* After climbing for the past few weeks, the Machine Gun Kelly and Hailee Steinfeld pairing in "At My Best" drop back down twenty-three spots to No.96.
* Ed Sheeran drops with most of his album tracks this week, two even leave the Top 100 (Save Myself and Bibia Be Ye Ye); down are "Perfect" (20 to 28), "Dive" (25 to 33), "What Do I Know?" (51 to 57), "Supermarket Flowers" (43 to 58), "New Man" (50 to 61), "How Would You Feel" (53 to 64), "Nancy Mulligan" (68 to 77), "Barcelona" (69 to 79), "Hearts Don't Break Around Here" (75 to 90) and "Eraser" (78 to 97).

* #24 - Heatstroke by Calvin Harris feat Young Thug, Pharrell Williams & Ariana Grande follows on from his entry six weeks ago "Slide" (HP-11, TW-13), and Calvin says he is not planning on releasing an album this year, just a montly track, so enjoy his April track.

* #36 - The One by The Chainsmokers is another solo track for the US duo (in other words no guest vocalists), and is taken from their just released album "Memories... Do Not Open", which also contains the singles "Paris" (TW-19) and "Something Just Like This" (TW-3), and none of last years singles.

* #41 - Moments by Bliss N' Eso feat Gavin James becomes the local hip-hop acts' third single to be lifted from their late April due sixth album "Off the Grid", previously we've had "Dopamine" (HP-38) and "Friend Like You" (HP-85), and this becomes the trio's ninth Top 50 entry too.

* #49 - No Promises by Cheat Codes feat Demi Lovato is the fourth entry for the US DJ trio (three as lead, one as a guest act), and their first original song (as opposed to their first two being semi-covers), and this also becomes their fourth Top 50 hit and for Demi her ninth (six as lead, three now as guest vocalist).

* #70 - Way Down We Go by Kaleo is the Icelandic bands first singles chart entry in Australia, the song so far having reached the Top 10 in Belgium and France and No.1 on the US alternative rock chart, whilst it is also climbing up the mainstream chart in the US and Canada. Their current album "Kaleo" bullets to a new peak of No.43 this week too.

Five weeks and counting for Ed Sheeran and his "÷ (Divide)" album in the No.1 position on the ARIA Albums Chart.

With both Ed's 'divide' and 'Shape' at the top of both ARIA charts for the past five weeks, this is now the longest dual-run at the top since late-June to mid-August of 2011 when Adele logged seven consecutive weeks at the top of both charts with "Someone Like You" and her second album "21", and this is the longest run at the top for a solo male artist since Bryan Adams' "Please Forgive Me" and his parent album "So Far So Good" did so for five weeks from mid-Dec 1993 until mid-Jan of 1994.

Ed Sheeran racks up his fourteenth accumulated week at No.1 and he now moves from equal 45th to now equal 42nd on the list for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: 1965 to 2017' alongside the 14 weeks racked up by Crowded House (5 #1's), Bee Gees (also 3 #1's) and Whitney Houston (2 #1's). And on the list for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: 2010's' he moves to outright fourth after eclipsing the 13 weeks that Taylor Swift has notched up during this decade.

As I mentioned in the singles section for this week, the DVD and Blu-ray for the animated Disney film 'Moana' was released on the 29th of March, and after last weeks Top 10 return, this week is blasts back up six places to land at a new peak of No.2 (formerly it peaked at No.3 for three broken weeks in January and February). This is one of four soundtracks within the Top 10, all four are aimed at the younger generation (plus school holidays have just started in some states too), and three of them are animated films too. The only fully-non animated film (it has a little bit) is "Beauty & the Beast" whose album is back down one to No.5, and right behind it is the 'Sing' (HP-2) set, which was also recently issued on DVD and Blu-Ray, and is back up six places to No.6 for a seventh week inside the Top 10, and finally back down two spots to No.8 is the soundtrack for "Trolls".

Adele's "25" set is back up one spot to No.4, and returning to the Top 10 is Ed Sheeran's "x (Multiply)" set, back up two to No.9 and its 94th week within the Top 10, and the only surviving album from last weeks Top 10 debuts is Lee Kernaghan with "The 25th Anniversary Album", which drops eight places to No.10 this week. For this week there are two albums debuting within the ten, the highest of which is "Emperor of Sand" for Mastodon, the heavy metal acts seventh studio album and now second Top 10 here, plus their highest charted too. Previously they hit No.7 with their sixth set "Once More 'Round the Sun" (late June 2014) and overall this is their sixth Top 100 entry (five studio, 1 live). The other Top 10 entry is the eighth studio album and first in seven years for Jamiroquai entitled "Automaton", which comes in at No.7 to become the bands fifth Top 10 album, with the bands fourth and fifth sets having both debuted at No.1, "Synkronized" (1wk on 21st June, 1999) and "A Funk Odyssey" (6 broken weeks from 10th Sept, 2001, the five further weeks were in Jan and Feb of 2002 when they toured here).

Ed gets the double again as in t he UK.

It would be interesting to find out whether Ed has broken a record. He has had the same number 1 and three different number songs (Castle on the Hill, Paean and new Galway Girl). i son't think anyone has done that before.

The top songs in categories:

Australian: Call on me - Starley
Streaming: Shape of you
Australian streaming: Call on me
Urban: Humble -Kendrick Lamar
Dance: Stay - Zedd
Club: You can call me Al - Murph and Petch featuring Livingstone
Digital: Shape of You
Streaming video: Shape of you
I was curious this week to see if Rockabye might drop out of the top 40, if it had, there'd be no former #1s in the top 40
I've added this week's ARIA Top 100 Singles chart entries to my site.

Hear them all here - http://top100singles.blogspot.com/2016/12/every-aria-top-100-single-in-2017.html
Someone is ripping me off with these preds. By my count I got 10 right not 9!!!
Last edited:
You are indeed correct. I count it all manually and sometimes get overwhelmed by all the disorderly numbers, it's fixed now
Oh wow, my lower twenty preds were terrible
I'm back on the throne (just kidding obviously)

Still hope that Slide and You Don't Know Me can go Top 10. Glad that Lorde is holding up quite well and Yay at Kendrick going Top 10.
By the way, Ed Sheeran now holds the record for the 'nearest to perfect' start to a chart-run on the Singles chart - 13 weeks - eclipsing Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' (12 weeks).
chartifacts updated.
Y'know it's not out of the question that Shape returns to #1 the week after. Harry's really not showing great progress on Spotify while Shape is still comfortably not going anywhere away from #1 there.
I'll raise my hopes ever so slightly then.
Can't see that happen as Shape lost a bit of steam yesterday on Spotify. The whole chart is getting closer to Ed. I won't be surprised if something else catches on come Friday. Plus he will probably lose momentum on iTunes during the week. Who knows though?
What makes this year interesting though is that we hadn't have a single American artist (feature or main artist otherwise) at the #1 position this year.
