I've been wanting to redo my End of Year lists for a long time and I've finally started work on it. In the past I've had songs appear in two lists if they cross years, but for this purpose each song has been assigned to just the one year. I've tried to go for the year of release so if something seems out of place, let me know and I can move it into the correct list. I also intend to eventually delve further into some of the music I haven't heard from the years, so there will be reissues of these lists if I ever do that.
There won't be anything fancy like a broadcast or commentary for the songs; both of those are too difficult for me. The best I can do is post the list from bottom to top, so that people can read as if it were a countdown, so I'll do that. Enjoy, or not!
It begins with 1997. That seemed to me the logical place to start. Other interests led me to give music more of a miss in 1996, but I was able to get back into the charts more in 1997 and it was a continuous interest from then. 1997 was also the year I started high school, and the year I got my first CD player and started buying CDs.
I was initially going to limit the lists to 100 songs, but I already know that some years will have more than 100 songs that I can't bear to cut, so each year will have whatever number I decide when I make the list. Therefore here is the top 144 for 1997:
Haha this swagger jacking though! I presume you're going forwards in time though. Fun timing though as after long delay I'm finally getting back into mine (hence the suspiciously alphabetically ordered reviewing of late ). Really looking forward to reaching the '90s because I'm curious to see how it weighs up, if I'll struggle to find 100 appropriate songs or I'll hate my self-imposed limit. I can certainly see a LOT of likely crossover on your list though, which makes me even more eager to get there! No alarms nor surprises about the #1, but well done Jebediah for jumping up from their non-BOAT wildcard standing!!
Ooh! While I think jinx's extensive efforts are a bit fancier than mine, these were both great reads.
As for '97, love all the Green Day (King For A Day and The Grouch! <3), Regurgitator, Silverchair, Foo Fighters, Portishead, Offspring, Radiohead, Cornershop, Grinspoon, Living End, Jebediah, Blur, John Safran, The Verve, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sixpence, Natalie Imbruglia, Ben Folds Five, Harvey Danger, Bic Runga and Third Eye Blind. I was especially Karma Police and Time Of Your Life would make the top 10 but their placings are reasonably high at least.
1998 will be a trickier year for me when I do eventually get to it. I'm a fan of Fatboy Slim, Stardust, Grinspoon, Manic Street Preachers, Powderfinger, Living End, U2, Massive Attack <33333, Ben Lee (CWKY), Madonna, Offspring, Placebo, Hole, Semisonic, Smashing Pumpkins, Pauline Pantsdown yasss, Shawn Mullins, Fastball, Goo Goo Dolls and Fuel. Shimmer is a really good number one and it's probably my favourite track in the top 26.
Ah, meant to comment on '98 earlier but was caught up at the time. The top few songs not overly surprising apart from the order which could have gone either way. "Celebrity Skin" strikes me as a surprise in the top 5 as I hadn't realised/forgot you'd liked it quite that much. Some other favourites I'm surprised/glad to see would be "Intergalactic", "Feel It", "Waltz #2". Also well done B.Z. for getting in on the action
'99 turned out a bit more interesting for me. Gotta say I love the copious Muse entries, especially to see even non-singles like "Fillip" and "Showbiz". I think the only favourite of mine from that album missing would be "Escape". STP caught me by surprised as I'd always thought of it as a 2000s song but now I see the album did come out in 1999, I guess being a '90s song makes more sense This time around the top 10 feels more in line with expectation, The Whitlams probably being my favourite there. Also the moment I realised it was the '99 list I had to hurry to check that indeed Eiffel 65 have survived to some degree of acclaim, well done!
Also in line with what was in the OP, I've been informed that the version of Christina's Come On Over Baby that (I assume) we all know only was released in 2000. The original album version had no 'Baby' in the title and the production is less upbeat.
Yeah, there were a few situations where I noticed a song had a re-recording for a single release, and I didn't want to listen to them all since a lot of the time the difference is probably negligible, so I mostly placed them in the earlier year. That said, I just had a listen to the original album version of Come On Over, and it's a very noticeable difference. I certainly want the single version for that one, so I've removed it from 1999 and it'll appear in the 2000 list. Thanks for the heads up, feel free to let me know any time something seems wrong.
The 1999 list remains at 161 songs though, since I noticed that I somehow missed Unpretty by TLC, despite getting the singles before and after it. So that's been added in too.
