#TaylorsTimeoftheYear

The lead single from Taylor Swift's sixth album ('Reputation' due Nov.10th) entitled "Look What You Made Me Do" comes straight in at No.1 on the ARIA Singles Chart this week, and continues a T.S. trend that she started in 2008.

"Look What You Made Me Do" becomes the 1065th No.1 in Australia (1940 to 2017) and now the 500TH No.1 for ARIA (1983 to 2017), and also by entering at the top of the charts it becomes 117th song to debut in the No.1 spot (it also debuted at the top of both the digital and streaming charts too), and the fifth one for this year out of the seven chart-topping tracks we have had during 2017 (we were up to 13 at this time last year), plus this new No.1 also becomes the fifth #1 for Taylor Swift and the record label 'Big Machine', and the song also debuts at No.1 in New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland Finland and Greece (so far).

For this decade Taylor has now amassed ten weeks at No.1, moving her to equal eleventh on the list for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1; 2010's: Singles' alongside the ten weeks notched up by Bruno Mars (from 3 #1's), and overall Ms.Swift has racked up twelve weeks at No.1 placing her equal 66th on the list of "Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Singles (1940 to 2017)' alongside The Carpenters (3 #1's), Paul McCartney and Racey (2 #1's each), whilst on the list for 'Most No.1 Singles' she is now equal 26th alongside other acts with five #1's like Louis Armstrong, George Michael, Olivia Newton-John, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, U2 and most recently Justin Bieber.

This is the fourth song to hit No.1 with the word 'Look', the 16th with a 'What' (which also knocks off a 'What' song too, even rarer), and the fifth 'Made' featured title, the last No.1 being 'We Made You' for Eminem (1 wk, 11-May, 2009), and this also becomes the 685th No.1 by an American artist to hit the top in Australia. Now to explain what I mean by #TaylorsTimeoftheYear and that trend she started back in 2008. Since her second album 'Fearless' came out, every first single from her album's have been issued in late August or very early September, with "Love Story" initially coming out overseas on the 12th of Sept., 2008, and here it first charted in Nov.2008 before becoming a hit and reaching No.1 here in early 2009. Her next album 'Speak Now' launched its first track in 'Mine' (HP-9 debut and peak position on 16th Aug, 2010), then came 'Red' where the first track released was 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (HP-3, peaked 27th Aug, 2012, and this song also went to No.1 in several countries overseas and was US #1 this week in 2012). The lead track issued from '1989' was "Shake it Off" which went to No.1 this week three years ago (1st Sept, 2014), and now this week she continues her last quarter chart domination with her fifth overall No.1 single in Australia.

So after two weeks at No.1, Pink and her 'What' track "What About Us" is down a spot to No.2, whilst holding at No.3 is Macklemore with his "Glorious" single and after debuting at No.2 last week the new Justin Bieber track "Friends" is back down two spots to No.4, whilst down one spot to No.5 are Imagine Dragons and "Thunder". Recent UK #1 single "New Rules" by Dua Lipa is up four places to a new peak of No.6, matching the peak of her first chart entry "Be the One" (HP-6, May 2016), whilst holding at it's No.7 peak is French Montana and "Unforgettable". Calvin Harris' "Feels" is down two places to No.8 this week, whilst dropping four spots to No.9 is former No.1 "Despacito" for Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, and lastly down one spot to No.10 is "Praying" for Kesha, which is now ▲Platinum in sales.

UP:
* Demi Lovato lands her highest charted single in Australia this week, as "Sorry, Not Sorry" is up three places to No.11, which if it continues to climb next week will become her first Top 10 here.
* The next major climber comes down at No.24, where Lauv is up five places to a new peak with "I Like Me Better".
* After which Avicii and Sandro Cavazza are up one spot to a new peak of No.25 with "Without You".
* Also up one spot to a new peak at No.27 are J. Balvin & Willy William and "Mi Gente".
* MTV VMA 'Best New Artist' winner Khalid see ALL FOUR of his Top 100 entries within the Top 50 this week, as his recent entry "Young, Dumb & Broke" jumps up sixteen places to land at a new peak of No.28, plus the song is now Gold (●) in sales after four weeks on the chart. His guest on the Marshmello track "Silence" leaps up thirty-four places to land at No.30, followed by a thirty place leap to No.37 as a guest on the Logic single "1-800-273-8255" (the U.S. 'Lifeline' equivalant), which after seventeen weeks within the Top 100 is making only its fourth Top 50 appearance (it initally made it to No.43 in late May). (Khalid's fourth Top 50 entry is "Location", down two to No.44).
* Camila Cabello takes a twenty-six place leap to No.36 with her new entry from last week entitled "Havana", whilst her four week old entry "OMG" is back up eight places to No.85.
* Portugal. The Man score their first Top 50 entry this week as "Feel it Still" rises fifteen places to land a new peak of No.43.
* The MTV VMA's were hosted by Katy Perry this past week, and she performed her latest single "Swish Swish" during the show, and it returns at No.66 this week, also helped by the recent video release for the track, whilst the other re-entry this week is also from a performer on the night, Fifth Harmony, who return at No.80 with "Down" (also helped in by their new albums Top 10 entry).
* Current US Top 5 holder Cardi B sees last weeks entry of "Bodak Yellow" jump up twenty-five spots this week to a new peak of No.69.
* The #1 entry for Taylor Swift also helps her previous 2017 chart entry to rise back up this week, as her 'Fifty Shades Darker' theme with Zayn in "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" is back up fourteen spots to No.83, plus it won 'Best Collaboration Video' at the MTV VMA's this past week.

DOWN:
* The only song leaving the Top 10 this week is "Strip That Down" (HP-2x2, WI10-13) for Liam Payne with Quavo, down four places to No.12, meaning that we now have three former One Direction members within the Top 20 this week, as Louis Tomlinson is right behind Liam at No.13 (on hold this week) with "Back to You", whilst Niall Horan is down two places to No.17 with "Slow Hands".
* Dropping four spots to No.15 is DJ Khaled with Rihanna and "Wild Thoughts", whilst his older track "I'm the One" with Justin Bieber falls seven places to No.32.
* There's a six place fall to No.29 for David Guetta and Justin Bieber's teaming on "2U".
* Kendrick Lamar won five 'space-men' awards at the MTV VMA's this week for his track "Humble", including 'Video of the Year', and the song is down four places here to No.31.
* Miley Cyrus is down three to No.34 with her "Malibu" track, and her new entry from last week in "Younger Now" (which she performed at the MTV VMA's) falls twelve to No.61.
* Martin Garrix and Troye Sivan fall eight spots to No.38 with "There for You".
* After fourteen broken weeks within the Top 40 (and only a peak of No.27), the Childish Gambino track "Redbone" is down six spots to No.45.
* All three Selena Gomez entries fall this week, with "Bad Liar" down seven to No.47, "Fetish" drops eight to No.49 and her Kygo appearance in "It Ain't Me" is only down four places to No.67.
* After a slow and steady fall down the chart, this week The Chainsmokers and Coldplay teaming in "Something Just Like This" plummets fifteen spots to land at No.48.
* Jason DeRulo just released a new track on Friday entitled "If I'm Lucky", as his older track "Swalla" drops down ten places to No.65.
* It's a second week of dropping for the John Gibbons cover of "P.Y.T.", as so far it has moved 61 to 66 and now 66 to 75.
* Last weeks debut for CNCO and Little Mix for "Reggaeton Lento" falls back down ten to No.78.
* There's a nine place "Slide" this week for the Calvin Harris track to No.84.

FURTHER NEW ENTRIES:
* #1 - Look What You Made Me Do by Taylor Swift
https://youtu.be/3tmd-ClpJxA

* #90 - Chateau by Angus & Julia Stone is the second track and first chart entry from the duo's September 15th due fourth studio album entitled 'Snow', which was also the name of their albums first single release. This now becomes the pairs' seventh singles chart entry.
https://youtu.be/fFHR164mnjg

* #95 - You Already Know by Fergie feat Nicki Minaj is the third chart entry from the September 22nd due (one week after Angus & Julia's) second album from Fergie entitled 'Double Dutchess', and this follows on from 2016's first entry from the new set "M.I.L.F. $" (HP-26, July 2016)
https://youtu.be/WsPkzje2hsc

* #97 - Rich Love by OneRepublic feat Seeb is the third single released this year from an as yet unknown new album from the US rock group, and overall this is their 14th Top 100 entry and their first since "Future Looks Good" hit No.90 in mid-September of 2016.
https://youtu.be/an71clpCxtg

* #99 - Walk on Water by 30 Seconds to Mars is the first new material from the band in over three years, and is the lead track from an as-yet unknown new album from Jared Leto and the boys. This is the bands eighth Top 100 entry and first since "City of Angels" hit No.93 in April of 2014.
https://youtu.be/NreeyhEBtC4

------------------------------//------------------------------
The seventh studio album for Cali-rock-band QOTSA or as their better known Queens of the Stone Age entitled "Villains", becomes the bands second successive No.1 album in Australia this week.

"Villains" becomes the 807th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2017) and the 658th for ARIA (1983 to 2017), and the 451st to debut in the top spot, plus the 16th No.1 album for 2017 (we were up to our 30th #1LP at the same time last year), and as I mentioned at the start, now the second No.1 for the band (and their record label 'Matador'), who previously debuted at the top with their sixth album "Like Clockwork" (10th June, 2013).

This is the first time that the word 'Villains' has appeared in a No.1 album title, the previous highest charted 'Villain' was Marilyn Manson with their set "Born Villain' (HP-16, May 2012). And now that the band have their second No.1 for this decade, they are now equal 26th on the list for 'Most No.1 Albums: 2010's' alongside thirteen other acts who have had two #1's for a total of two weeks at the top, such as Madonna, 5SOS, Flume, Nick Cave, Lorde, The Weeknd, Sia and Jimmy Barnes. The new No.1 album also becomes the 282nd by an American Act (solo, duo or group) to hit No.1 here and also the album is the 364th by a Group to hit the top spot (local or overseas).

In a rare feat, Paul Kelly's latest album "Life is Fine" is on hold at No.2 for a second week, and I say rare because all but one of the seven previous Top 10 albums he has achieved during his chart career have only stayed within the Top 10 for a single week (his 2001 set "...Nothing But a Dream" did manage two weeks), as his only long-running Top 10 was with his "Songs from the South" (TW-82) set back in 1997 (16 weeks within the Top 10, his longest run ever). Also on hold this week is the third Ed Sheeran album "÷ (Divide)" marking its half-year anniversary by not having moved any lower than No.3 in its entire chart run.

There are three soundtracks within the Top 10 this week, most notably are both of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' volumes which are both within the ten, as the recent DVD and Blu-Ray release for Vol.2 helps its set to rise five places this week to No.4, and Vol.1 is back up six places to land at No.8. The third and final Top 10 soundtrack this week is on hold at No.10, "Moana". The final non-debut entry to this weeks higher-area is last weeks No.1 debut for Gang of Youths entitled "Go Farther in Lightness", which this week drops six places to land at No.7.

The second of four Top 10 debuts this week is at No.5, the fouth studio album for The War on Drugs entitled "A Deeper Understanding", which becomes the US indie-rock bands second entry here and now first Top 10 placing, as they last charted in March of 2014 with their third album "Lost in the Dream" (HP-28). One place lower at No.6 is the sixth studio album, second entry and now first Top 10 entry for local singer Kim Churchill entitled "Weight_Falls", his previous entry being his 2014 fifth set "Silence / Win" (HP-32, June 2014). And finally coming in at No.9 is the self-titled third studio album for Fifth Harmony, and it becomes the now-four-piece groups second Top 10 album, as last years "7/27" debuted and peaked at No.8 in early June of 2016, and their first set "Reflection" made it to No.16 in February of 2015, with the lead single from the new album in "Down" (HP-66) returning at No.80 this week.

UP:
* With the release and No.1 debut of a new Taylor Swift single, her older album "1989" jumps back up fifteen places to No.16 this week (even though its not on the album).
* Khalid is on hold at his peak of No.19 with "American Teen".
* Climbing best of compilations this week go to Queen (37 to 25), Fleetwood Mac's "GH" (76 to 26) and "Very Best of" (93 to 88, thanks to the Stevie Nicks future tour with The Pretenders), Guns N' Roses (78 to 36), Glen Campbell in "The Collection" returning at a new peak of No.55 and his "20 Golden Greats" (99 to 78); Crowded House (61 to 56), Michael Jackson (84 to 77), Red Hot Chili Peppers (100 to 84) and a further return for Queen (The Platinum Collection) at No.98.
* The host of the 2017 MTV VMA's in Katy Perry sees her "Witness" rise six places to No.27, plus the album had a special new edition just released too.
* Nickelback rise up eight places to No.33 with "Feed the Machine", and their collection is back in at #100 this week too.
* Did Dan Sultan's appearance on 'Q&A' last week boost his sales, maybe it did, because his most recent album "Killer" jumps back up thirteen places to No.38, plus his national tour kicks off from September 1st in Geelong (Vic) which will boost the album again for next week too.
* Stone Sour score a second rising week (after last week) with "Hydrograd", now back up fifteen to No.41.
* Meg Mac bounces back up eighteen places to No.47 with her "Low Blows".
* Ariana Grande tours here from the 5th of September (this coming week), and her most recent album "Dangerous Woman" is back up ten places to No.49.
* Further returning albums this week include "Rumours" for Fleetwood Mac at No.62, The Jungle Giants with "Quiet Ferocity" at No.65, "How Did We Get So Dark?" for Royal Blood at No.89 and the Kehlani set "SweetSexySavage" at No.95.
* Sia and "This is Acting" are back up fifteen places to No.75.

DOWN:
* Last week we saw the highest dropout from the charts occur in the self-titled second album for Jen Cloher from No.5, well this week we see that chart-feat beaten as not only do three of last weeks Top 10 debuts leave the Top 100, but the No.4 entry for King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and "Sketches of Brunswick East" (HP-4, WI10-1) is now the highest Top 100 dropout, but we also see two more of last weeks Top 10 debuts leave the entire chart too, "Science Fiction" (HP-6, WI10-1) for Brand New from No.6 (the new US #1 album this week too), and then Neck Deep with "The Peace and the Panic" (HP-8, WI10-1). Also falling out of the Top 10 from last week is new entry in "Dear Desolation" (HP-5, WI10-1) for Thy Art is Murder which is down sixty-two places to No.67, whilst the fifth and final Top 10 dropout is "Rainbow" (HP-7, WI10-2) for Kesha, down eight to No.15.
* Falling soundtracks this week go to "Baby Driver" (17 to 21), "Trolls" (22 to 28) and "Suicide Squad" (53 to 58).
* Harry Styles' self-titled debut album drops thirteen places to No.31 this week.
* There's an eleven place slide for the Calvin Harris album "Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1" to No.32.
* The debut Ed Sheeran album "+ (Positive)" falls ten spots to No.34.
* The Weeknd is down twelve chart-rungs to No.37 with his "Starboy" set, whilst his older album "Beauty Behind the Madness" is down ten spots to No.93.
* Carole King is down nineteen places to No.46 with her 1971 "Tapestry" album, whilst her tribute album by local artists in "Beautiful", drops twenty-two spots to No.69.
* After climbing last week, this week the London Grammar set "Truth is a Beautiful Thing" is back down eleven spots to No.54.
* Tyler, The Creator plummets twenty-nine spots to No.63 with his "Flower Boy" album.
* The debut Linkin Park album "Hybrid Theory" (2000) is down thirty places to No.68, whilst their most recent album "One More Light" is down five spots this week to No.45.
* There's a nineteen place drop to No.71 for the Amy Shark "Night Thinker" EP.
* Hillsong United are down eighteen to No.72 with "Wonder".
* Pete Murray skids down thirty-two places to No.76 with his "Camacho" set.
* Arcade Fire see an eighteen place fall to No.80 with "Everything Now".
* There are a further four albums that leave the Top 100 from last weeks Top 50, all of which debuted on the chart last week, Sarah McLeod (#29), Grizzly Bear (#26), Steven Wilson (#30) and A$AP Ferg (#35).

I've added this week's ARIA Top 100 Singles chart entries to my site.

The lack of Australian music in the Top 5 for such a long time is quite disturbing.
Top 10 even! There hasn't been an Australian single released in 2017 that's cracked the top 10 yet. Maybe Jess can pass the baton to Ricki-Lee considering their songs sound similar
Still can't believe Jess didn't make the top 10.. we probably won't see an Australian artist in the top 10 at all this year, because I feel like if anyone was going to do it it would be Jess. It's getting sad.
Well, I did warn y'all that streaming is eeevaaal.
I think the members that are not happy with the overall chart should look at the digital tracks chart for inspiration it shows Fallin' peaked at #2. Kiss Somebody peaked at #16 and Fergie and 30 Seconds to Mars new songs are top 40 hits. It seems the digital tracks chart is turning into the physical singles chart.

Anyway Hijinx I only got 5 out of 20 correct not 6. Which makes Fenrik the winner with 6 correct.

However with my top 50 preds I got 6 Out of 50.

I got symphony spot on at #39
How is 'Young Dumb and Broke' already gold?
I think that streaming is an accurate reflection of what people are listening too and reflects the way people are consuming music.

The failure of Australian artists on the song charts reflects the fact Australian artists aren't producing music that appeals to young people. It shows the problems with having pop idol type TV shows as the main form of talent identification.
Takes some honesty to admit that Martin, fixed

I know Khalid is huge on streaming Trav, and so since his album's been out since around the start of the year, he's had a while to accumulate them. Kind of like how Location was nearly platinum by the time it finally debuted (though that was ARIA's fault )
Or perhaps Australian music isn't that good this year.

Digital sales will be dead in three years anyway
chartifacts updated.

new # in #TaylorsTimeoftheYear

I won't let that stand though I accept that what I listen to is very much at odds with what most people listen to

Regulations just need to catch up with the times. Hot Hits Australia on Spotify should always have at least 10 Australian songs, not just the ones that are already big, and not the same ones for months on end (Waves is still on there even though Dean Lewis has had two more singles come through since and be ignored!)

There is a problem that you have JJJ which plays a lot of new Australian music and commercial radio which is still influential. You could have those rules but it doesn't mean people will listen to those streams. They will just listen to something else. It is not like the 70s where there is just a few stations that people listen to and a few TV stations. People can choose to listen to what they like on the Internet.

Personally I listen to very little mainstream radio and stream music on Google Play. It is a mix of charting songs, charting album cuts, category album material and Golden oldies.

You have to work at ways of promoting Australian music to young audiences. Having the Government make rules saying what you must listen too isn't going to work too well.

As far as Australian music goes, the songs charts are back to the 50s when Australian music got played very little. When it comes to albums, the situation is much healthier thanks largely to JJJ
I reckon people definitely would listen. As someone who has spent years studying streaming habits, if you put something in front of people and it's not Merzbow or something, they will listen to it. So much of streaming is just passive background listening, so as long as the genre is what people are after, they're not gonna go out of their way to skip something they're not familiar with.

I think there is a large enough market for people who want to support Australian music, which is why whenever something does break through, it often sticks around for ages. Come next year, we'll see another round up of think pieces & hot takes about how the Hottest 100 has too much Australian music. You just need to put it in front of people because they're not going out of their way to find anything.
Perhaps I should have said that people don't like 2017 Australian music.

Genuine question: we're always talking about how streaming is badly impacting Australian music but did any Australian 2017 single trouble the Top 10 digital track bar Waves and Fallin'?
No, I think that very few songs by Australian artists have made breakthroughs on commercial radio.

Look I think the problem is a long term going back to the turn of the century with issues like music venues being replaced by pokies venues, the move of commercial radio from a focus on music to entertainment and the rise of reality television music programs. I remember when MMM used to play new music which really dates me . My view is many more people are listening to streaming than buying digital music. The issue is wider than music given the rise of streaming services like Netflix for television.

Personally I think streaming music should count towards the charts and the album charts are much improved by adding streaming data.
