The lead single from the forthcoming second Sam Smith album (date or title unknown atm) entitled "Too Good at Goodbyes" not only debuts at the top in Australia, but enters at the No.1 position in England, Scotland and New Zealand (so far), plus it becomes his first chart-topper down under too.

"Too Good at Goodbyes" becomes the 1066th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2017) and the 501st for ARIA (1983 to 2017), plus the 118th song to debut in the No.1 spot, and the third in a row, plus the eighth No.1 for 2017, of which six have debuted first week in the top spot, and finally this new No.1 is also the 59th for the Capitol Record label (their last was 'Rise' for Katy Perry in July 2016). This new entry not only becomes Sam's highest charted single in Australia, but also his fourth Top 10 too after "La La La" with Naughty Boy (2013), "Stay With Me" (2014) and "Lay Me Down" (2015).

This is the sixth time that a song title has featured the word 'Too' in its title, plus the seventh 'Good' and now the third 'Goodbye', with previous farewells being by The Beatles (Jan 68) and the first was for actor James Darren and "Goodbye Cruel World" (late Nov 1961). Sam Smith also becomes the 45th English Solo Male Artist to hit No.1 in Australia and overall he is the 125th English Artist (solo, duo or group) to make it to the top here, and of those this is the 204th English performed No.1 and the fourth for this year after Clean Bandit led at the start of the year, followed by Ed Sheeran (Jan) and Harry Styles (April).

So Sam's debut at the top pushes Taylor Swift and her two week running former No.1 "Look What You Made me Do" to No.2, but the song picks up its first certification achieveing ▲Platinum after three weeks of sales, whilst she remains at No.3 with last weeks debut "...Ready for it?". Last week we had an all female Top 3, and now this week its four of the Top 5, as the recent UK and current Irish No.1 single by Dua Lipa in "New Rules" breaks free of its two weeks at No.6 and climbs two places to land at a new peak of No.4, now Dua's highest charted single in Australia, whilst rounding out the Top 5 is Pink with her recent No.1 "What About Us!" down three spots this week to No.5.

Macklemore's first and only No.2 single in Australia in "Glorious" is down two spots to No.6, and on hold at No.7 are Imagine Dragons' "Thunder". The biggest drop within the Top 10 is the current Justin Bieber and BloodPop track "Friends", which is down four places this week to No.9 and after four weeks scores a Gold (●) sales certification. The second Top 10 debut for the week is a duet for former One Direction member Zayn who has teamed with local singer Sia for this weeks No.8 entry "Dusk Till Dawn", becoming her tenth Top 10 and his third Top 10 in Australia, and his third collaboration for 2017 after his '50 Shades Darker' duet with Taylor Swift from January in "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" (HP-3, TW-87) and "Still Got Time" (HP-20) with PartyNextDoor. And finally jumping up seven places to land at No.10 is Logic with Alessia Cara and Khalid and their U.S.A. suicide prevention hotline track "1-800-273-8255" which becomes the second Top 10 entry for Logic (his first as a lead artist), the third for Alessia Cara and now the first for Khalid who has four songs within the Top 50 this week.

UP:
* Lauv is on hold this week at No.13 with "I Like Me Better", which is now Gold (●) in sales too.
* Vance Joy enjoys a second week of a sales surge, as "Lay it on Me" jumps up seven places to a new peak of No.18, becoming his/their fourth Top 20 single in Australia.
* Khalid is up one spot to a new peak of No.20 with "Young, Dumb & Broke" (#2 in NZ this week), whilst his appearance on the Marshmello track "Silence" is on hold at No.27 for a second week.
* Last weeks debut for Maroon 5 and SZA with "What Lovers Do" is up six to No.28.
* Portugal. The Man move up four places to a new peak of No.35 with "Feel it Still".
* The current No.1 in Germany is the Axwell/\Ingrosso track "More Than You Know", which here is up four places to a new peak of No.41 and it is newly certified Gold (●) in sales.
* After slowly climbing up the chart for the past six weeks, this week the Skrillex & Poo Bear track "Would You Ever" jumps up ten places to a new peak of No.52.
* Five weeks ago John Gibbons debuted with his cover of the M.J. track "P.Y.T.", which this week jumps back up twelve places to land at a new chart height of No.54.
* Cardi B is still Top 3 in the USA with "Bodak Yellow", here it's up four places to a new peak of No.66.
* Drake's "Passionfruit" is back up five places to No.81 after last weeks announcement of his pending end-of-2017 national tour, whilst his former entries returning to the chart this week are "One Dance" at No.98 and "Signs" at No.100.
* The third and final re-entry is for the 'Longest Charted Single' holder in Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud", which is back in at No.96 for its 142nd week within the Top 100. (Last weeks returned "Riptide" by Vance Joy leaves the Top 100 and is in second place at 124 weeks, but the longest for an Aussie act).

DOWN:
* After a single week within the Top 10 the Demi Lovato track "Sorry, Not Sorry" (HP-8, WI10-1) is back down three places to No.11, whilst the two other Top 10 evacuees are the French Montana and Swae Lee track "Unforgettable" (HP-7x3, WI10-5) down two to No.12 and "Feels" (HP-3x2, WI10-10) for Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean, which is down six places to No.15, with Katy's "Swish Swish" down nine to No.80.
* Justin Bieber has four songs within the Top 40 this week (again), all of which are dropping, the Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee track with JB is down five to No.16, whilst his guest on the David Guetta track "2U" is down four to No.39 and his vocals on the DJ Khaled song "I'm the One" are down three to No.40, whilst DJ Khaled's other entry with Rihanna in "Wild Thoughs" drops six to No.24.
* Three former One Direction members land new certifications this week, and all songs are dropping too; firstly Liam Payne with "Strip That Down" is down five to No.19 and now 3x▲Platinum followed by "Back to You" for Louis Tomlinson, down six to No.21 and newly ▲Platinum in sales, whilst also scoring a 3x▲Platinum cert is Niall Horan with "Slow Hands", down three to No.22.
* Shawn Mendes drops six places to No.30 with "There's Nothing Holdin' me Back".
* A new Jessica Mauboy track was released over the weekend, and her recent No.11 single "Fallin'" drops nine places this week to No.38.
* Post Malone loses some of his "Congratualtions" this week, as the song is down six to No.44.
* Alessia Cara might be scoring a new Top 10 entry this week with Logic, but her last Top 10 entry with Zedd and "Stay" drops seven places to No.59.
* Selena Gomez sees all three of her chart entries move down this week, with "Bad Liar" down twelve to No.61, "Fetish" drops ten to No.71 and "It Ain't Me" with Kygo is down thirteen to No.85.
* Miley Cyrus has teen-drops for both of her entries, with "Malibu" down fifteen to No.65 and her more recent entry "Younger Now" drops seventeen places to No.77.
* Last weeks entry for Jason DeRulo and "If I'm Lucky" is down this week nine places to No.68.
* The last big drop for the week goes to Charli XCX with her track "Boys", down seventeen places to No.99, but with new remixes just released it could rebound next week.

The sixth studio album for Anthony Callea entitled "ARIA Number One Hits in Symphony" is now his third No.1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, which means he has had the most #1 albums by any of the Idol contestants and winners.

"ARIA No.1 Hits in Symphony" becomes the 808th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2017) and the 659th for ARIA (1983 to 2017), plus the 452nd to debut in the No.1 spot and the 23rd for the Sony (Australia) label and their first this year (the last was the Farnham & ON-J Xmas #1 in Dec 2016). Anthony first hit No.1 in Australia with his self-titled debut album for three weeks in April of 2005, and this time last year he went to No.1 with "Backbone" (1 week on 26th Sept, 2016), which means that he has now had two weeks at No.1 during this decade, putting him equal 26th on the list for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums; 2010's' alongside fourteen other acts including Madonna, Sia, 5SOS, Boy & Bear, Flume, Jimmy Barnes, Barbra Streisand, Nick Cave, Lorde and a couple of weeks ago QOTSA. Plus Anthony is now equal 112th on the list for 'Accumualted Weeks at No.1: Albums 1965 to 2017' alongside other acts who have racked up five weeks at the top here like Cold Chisel (four albums), Nirvana and Black Eyed Peas (also 3 #1's), Michael Bolton, Def Leppard, Diesel, Green Day, Jack Johnson, Shannon Noll and Cliff Richard (all two #1 LP's).

This is the first ARIA No.1 album with the word 'ARIA' in its title, and the third with 'Number' (both The Beatles and Culture Club in 1983), the 27th with 'Hits' (mostly all of them 'Greatest Hits' sets), and the first with the word 'Symphony'. This new No.1 is the 17th album for the year (we had hit 32 #1's at this time last year), and now the eighth for an Australian Artist. Anthony's new No.1 also becomes the 218th by an Australian Artist (solo, duo or group) to hit the top and the 224th by a Solo Male Artist (local or overseas).

Anthony has now had as many #1 albums as Pete Murray and Keith Urban, and the most by an Idol contestant, here's a list of the Most #1 LP's by Australian Male Artists:
11 - Jimmy Barnes
10 - John Farnham
7 - The Twelfth Man
3 - Pete Murray, Keith Urban and Anthony Callea
2 - Diesel, Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Bernard Fanning, Damien Leith, Flume, Taylor Henderson.

And when you factor in both female artists and groups here's how that list looks too:
11 - Jimmy Barnes
10 - John Farnham
7 - The Twelfth Man
5 - Olivia Newton-John, AC/DC, Silverchair, Powderfinger, Kasey Chambers, Hilltop Hoods
4 - Cold Chisel, INXS, Midnight Oil, Human Nature, Kylie Minogue, Delta Goodrem, Hillsong
3 - Bee Gees, You Am I, John Butler Trio, Pete Murray, Missy Higgins, Anthony Callea, Bliss N' Eso, Keith Urban, The Amity Affliction.

I don't usually speak about things other than the charts, but this week something occurred which is rare in itself, and as a gay man I want to report on it. Both artists whom debut in the No.1 spots this week are out gay-men, with Sam Smith scoring his first #1 single here and Anthony Callea coming in at the top over here on the albums chart. I had to look back quite a way to find the last gay artist(s) who topped both charts (plus were out at the time), and we have to go back to the 24th of October in 1983 when Culture Club topped the charts with "Karma Chameleon" and its parent album "Colour by Numbers" for six weeks up until mid-November of 1983. Although there are NOW out artists who have done it since in George Michael in May of 1996 (before he officially came out) with "Fastlove" and its parent set "Older" (26th May) and then almost a year later (and this is the last time it occurred), Savage Garden were at the top for eight weeks with "Truly, Madly, Deeply" and their self-titled studio album from the 6th of April in 1997, Darren Hayes (lead singer) not coming out for until the early 2000's.

The new No.1 album in England this week is the new No.2 album here, the seventh studio album for US indie-rock group The National entitled "Sleep Well Beast", becoming the groups third chart entry and second successive No.2 album, as their last set "Trouble Will Find Me" debuted and peaked at No.2 in late May of 2013, whilst they first hit our charts in May 2010 with their fifth album "High Violet" (HP-29, peaked Jan 2011). And also debuting with his seventh studio album at No.3 is Jack Johnson and "All the Light About it Too", the album cover featuring Jack surrounded by plastic he found on his local Hawaiian beach. This becomes his seventh Top 3/Top 10 album in Australia and his first since his sixth set "From Here to Now to You" which also debuted at No.3 in late September of 2013.

After returning for a 20th broken week at No.1 for Ed Sheeran's "÷ (Divide)" album, this week it falls again from the top spot, to now its lowest chart position during its 28 weeks on the chart, down three to No.4 this week. And also falling from his high perch after four weeks is Paul Kelly's "Life is Fine", down three to No.5, both sets helped last week by late-week Fathers Day sales. The fourth and final Top 10 debut is the third album for US country artist Kip Moore entitled "Slowheart", which becomes his first Top 10 berth in Australia and also his second albums chart entry, having first charted with his second album "Wild Ones" (HP-31) in late August of 2015. The remainder of the Top 10 features the soundtracks for "Moana" (stable at No.7) and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2" (down five places to No.9 and newly Gold (●) in sales), and two rock albums in "Villains" for Queens of the Stone Age, down five to No.8 and "Go Farther in Lightness" by Gang of Youths, dropping four places to land at No.10.

UP:
* Khalid continues his gradual climb up the charts with his "American Teen" set, this week it's up two places to a new peak of No.15.
* Lana Del Rey jumps back up nineteen places to No.19 with "Lust for Life".
* Drake's late-last-week announcement about his upcoming tour here this week helps his albums to climb back up, with "More Life" up eight to No.28 and "Views" leaping thirty-two spots to No.49.
* Post Malone climbs three places to land his "Stoney" album at a new peak of No.42.
* Tina Arena has been doing shows around the country recently, and that helps her recent collection "Greatest Hits & Interpretations" (HP-2) to re-enter at No.48.
* The new singles chart entry for Halsey helps her to rise a little, with "hopeless kingdom fountain" back up six places to No.57.
* The self-titled album for Dua Lipa is also up six spots to No.60, helped by her highest charted single occuring with "New Rules".
* The Play School collection "50 Best Songs" jumps back up twenty-three places to No.63.
* Further returning albums this week are from Amy Shark (#71), Logic (#90), The Weeknd's "Beauty" (#91), Charlie Puth (#93), Rihanna (#97), Dean Lewis (#99) and Elton John's "Rocket Man: Definitive Hits" (#100).
* Two animated film soundtracks rising lower down are from "Sing" (96 to 76) and "Frozen" (98 to 89).
* James Blunt's tour announcement helps his returning "The Afterlover" album to rise this week seventeen places to land at No.82.

DOWN:
* There are four albums leaving the Top 10 this week, firstly is the first volume of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" (HP-2, WI10-12a) soundtracks, down two spots to No.11, followed by the No.1 album from this week in 2014 (15th Sept) with the debut set for Vance Joy and "Dream Your Life Away" (HP-1x1, WI10-3a), dropping nine to No.17. Then two of last weeks debuting albums drop down, The Script and "Freedom Child" (HP-5, WI10-1) drops twenty-four spots to No.29 and the new US and Canadian No.1 album for LCD Soundsystem and "American Dream" (HP-10, WI10-1) falls twenty-one places to land at No.31.
* There has just been a new Carole King DVD released on Friday, and her 1971 breakout album "Tapestry" is back down nineteen places to No.32 this week.
* Kesha has an eleven place drop to No.34 with her "Rainbow" set.
* The Weeknd sees a twelve place drop to No.36 with "Starboy".
* The War on Drugs crumble twenty-two places to No.37 with "A Deeper Understanding".
* The digital only released Neil Finn album "Out of Silence" should rise back up next week as the physical CD was issued on Friday, which is why this week the set is down thirty-four spots to No.46, whilst the Crowded House "The Very Very Best of" is back down twenty-four spots to No.70.
* Katy Perry is down eighteen places to No.47 with her "Witness" set.
* Nickelback see a twenty-seven place drop to No.53 with "Feed the Machine".
* Vera Blue and her "Perennial" is down twenty-one spots this week to No.55.
* The Soundtrack for "Baby Driver" plummets twenty-eight spots to No.58.
* Rag'N'Bone Man sees a sixteen place slide for his "Human" album to No.65.

* The Roy Orbison "Ultimate Collection" is down thirteen places to No.80, the Guns N' Roses "Greatest Hits" also falls thirteen spots to No.86, and the Glen Campbell "Collection" drops thirty places to No.94.

Sam will be thrilled when he finds out he's the first gay man to hit #1 on ARIA.
Sam Smith has debuted at number 1 on the songs chart. His first number 1 in Australia I believe.

In the various categories, the number 1 song is:

Australian: Lay it on me - Vance Joy
Streaming: Look what you made me do - Taylor Swift
Australian streaming: Lay it on me
Urban: 1-800-273-8255 - Logic (his first US top ten)
Dance: Feels - Calvin Harris featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean
Club: Cola (Franky Rizardo mix) - CamelPhat and Elderbrook
Digital: Too good at goodbyes
Video: Look what you made me do

I doubt that Sam Smith was the first gay man to have a number 1 hit. Certainly, if you include groups he isn't. George Michael had a number 1 hit with Faith in 1987 although he wasn't out as gay at the time.

Of course, Sir Elton John identifies as a gay man and he has had several number 1 songs.
Well aware, Google 'sam smith first gay man'
I expected it, but dammit Callea!
I did. This article advises me that Elton John was an openly gay man who won an Oscar in 1995 for the Lion King.

His first number one song was Don't go breaking my heart as a duet with Kiki Dee in 1976.

Queen with Freddie Mercury as lead singer hit number one with Bohemian Rhapsody so Freddie Mercury is probably the first gay man to go to number 1 in Australia some 41 years ago.
Sorry Hijinx, didn't pick up on the joke.
Much butthurt I sense in you, young padawans! (re: The National)

I wonder what is going to be #1 at the weekend?

Logic & Post Malone have both been #1 on Spotify but probably aren't big enough on sales yet to really contend (though I think PM has a chance in the next few weeks). Imagine Dragons has been #1 on iTunes but isn't top 10 on Streaming, which is the same case for Pink. Taylor has been falling all week on iTunes and Spotify (I initially thought she would climb back the other day). Sam Smith could stay at #1 but actually fell low top 10 on both earlier this week. The only other song that's been fairly consistent is New Rules but I am not sure if that stands too much of a chance or not really.

watch me get 0/20 or something like that
Yeah it's an interesting one simon. Also worth noting is that P!nk has actually been #1 combined on iTunes for most of the week, but she's even further behind on streaming. I do feel like it'll be a victory for the status quo so it'll probably be Sam or Taylor, but I can see something weird happening like Lauv shooting into the top 3 out of nowhere thanks to all the variance between the two charts at the moment.
Given Dua Lipa's been the most consistent on iTunes and Spotify this week, I'd place my bet on her. I won't be surprised if Sam Smith maintains the #1 though. Can't see Taylor getting it as she's dropped quite a bit on Spotify (it's actually out of the Top 10 as of now).

Saturday's chart will be interesting because I can't remember seeing such discrepancy between Spotify and iTunes charts.
Sam's holding up better than I expected on Spotify. The song doesn't sound very playlist friendly (much like Taylor) so I wonder if he too will start dipping in the coming weeks. Kinda surprised that I'm rooting for Post Malone Update just came in and he's gained another 15,000 plays today, 4th highest peak of 2017 behind Shape, Despacito & Taylor!
Oh well, I'll just follow Zacco's footsteps and throw a pred as a) it's been a long time b) this week's chart is unpredictable.

1. New Rules
2. Too Good At Goodbyes
3. What About Us

10. Moana
I actually think Sam will stay at #1 now, its just overtaken New Rules on Spotify and is higher on sales. It could be very close though.
What makes me think that Dua has a better chaénce is the fact that Sam dropped as low as #9 on iTunes and #8 on Spotify this weekend and 'only' started to gain traction from Monday onwards, when the video premiered.

But you're right. It will probably be one hell of a close battle.
Amidst all this chaos, ...Ready For It? sure looks to have an interesting chart run
I want to try ~
