174. Ali Barter - Cigarette

If I shaved my head would you tell your friends you don't really care?

Around the time this song was released, junkee was prompted to write an article about the fact that there are so many songs around about cutting one's hair, not that I can think of any other songs of that nature from early 2017. While she hasn't committed the shaving yet, she is now difficult to recognise with blonde hair. "Cigarette" features on Ali Barter's debut album which was finally released last year.

See the burden in your eyes, you're doin' better than me. Tell me where your heart is, I'm only 23

Typically rad Perth band Tired Lion released their debut album "Dumb Days" late last year. Having released a bunch of singles prior to it, this was the lead single to be included. Frontwoman Sophie Hopes wrote this song in the midst of a lousy one night stand, with the oxymoronic title referring to conflicting fragility and darkness of the situation.

137. Ruby Fields - I Want

I wanna be meditating in temples, surrounded by the knowledge of sacred scrolls

While some artists take some time to get there, Ruby Fields kind of blew up within hours of uploading her first song to triple j Unearthed. Whether or not this was because triple j posted about it on Facebook is kind of a chicken-egg situation. The extent of her independence means that she even builds her own guitars, showing the sort of determination that could see her become more than her ATAR.

Trophy Eyes of course landed at #101 in last year's Hottest 100 and their bass player follows me on Twitter so I only hope the best for them. "Hurt" is the first single they have released since 2016's "Chemical Miracle" album and marks a noted shift in sound, being much more accessible and radio friendly, only featuring clean vocals.
I am not familar with alot of these songs since #145. Well done to them doing well!

I do enjoy listening to them but I wish the LAV's didn't count! They aren't released singles and I feel they rob those songs that rank at #101 - #105 from featuring in the Hottest 100 all because they cover a well known song like a Bieber song or by an artist who is a favourite for that period of time such as Gang of Youths this year. I strongly believe that if the same song was covered and sounded exactly the same by a lesser known artist it wouldn't make the countdown at all! I also think it's an embarrassment for a band like DMA's who can rank high based on a cover and not their own material. I have never liked their inclusion.
I think there's a certain mixed bag you get with it that you get with anything. I do think in the last couple of years there's definitely been an improvement with the popular ones at least being distinctly interesting rather than 'oh here's Meg Mac just doing that Broods song', 'here's CHVRCHES doing Arctic Monkeys' that wasn't really that interesting.

Would say that in defence of Gang Of Youths, the cover wouldn't have as much impact with other artists since "Blood" is very much in tune with the main themes of their debut album, almost feels like it was their own song!

125. Royal Blood - Lights Out

You're a void, a crack in the mirror, see me now, if you could see me now

The 2014 Hottest 100 was not kind to Royal Blood. I mark myself as somewhat responsible as I voted for not their biggest song "Ten Tonne Skeleton" and they ended up finding themselves just barely missing the top 100 with all 3 of their big singles. It's also possibly entirely Mark DiStef who you can blame because I remember their songs being higher in my tally before the Taylor Swift thing happened. Nonetheless I write this blurb under the false impression that they have broken through for real this time. "Lights Out" is the lead single to their 2nd album "How Did We Get So Dark?" and generally kind of slaps.
that reminder of Royal Blood never making the H100

Yeah, life's a riddle, let me give you all a clue, go and do the opposite of everything I told you to

Now I finished school not long after "The Waitress Song" came out so I don't know for certain whether or not Seth Sentry actually goes into schools to give pep talks but I'd like to hope so. This song is set at Seth's own school, though unfortunately he does not come there just to win all the athletics competitions. This song also comes with an M. Night Shyamalan-esque twist which I've been nice enough to spoil.

117. Kasabian - You're In Love With A Psycho

We've been waiting far too long, we'll play it out again, this is just my serenade

The last time you may have heard Kasabian this high a Hottest 200 was with 2011's "Rewired" so if you want to know what they've been up to since, it's primarily releasing increasingly lazy and eyesore-ish album artwork. If you'd asked me in 2009 if I thought Kasabian would still be around and popular after all this time I'd have thought yes but now it feels super weird to me. The music video does get a little mileage out of the fact that Stephen Graham & Noel Fielding could pass for Tom & Serge if you squint a little.

My happiness, slowly creeping hand, of time and its command, soon enough it comes

There's never been a Like A Version of a Hottest 100 winning song make it into the Hottest 100 itself. The closest is the Scissor Sisters' cover of Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" ALTHOUGH some pundits might say that doesn't even count because "Take Me Out" was not confirmed a Hottest 100 winner when that cover got in. Nonetheless this extremely Brisbane cover features some wacky guitar tuning.

113. Halsey - Bad At Love

I told him that I never really liked his friends, now he's gone and he's calling me a bitch again

Gone is the Halsey that radio are too afraid to play, as at the time of writing this, "Bad At Love" is the 3rd most heard song on US radio right now. And that's not even to mention that she kind of appeared on the biggest song of 2016, so long gone are the days of Halsey being on the fringes of the pop charts. Long continues her misfortune on the album chart as her 2nd album "hopeless fountain kingdom" gave her a 2nd #2 peak in a row. You can't blame her for trying though.

"Run For Cover" was released as the 2nd single from The Killers' 5th studio album "Wonderful Wonderful", which late last year became their first album to ever debut at #1 on the ARIA Charts, and their 2nd #1 album overall. The song was actually started about a decade ago when the band were writing for their 3rd album "Day & Age", but only recently had the finishing touches in place, with help from Australia's own Alex Cameron, who the band have repaid the favour for, as he has been supporting the band on their US & UK tours.

Hijinx, in the last couple of years there has been an artist make a come back to the Hottest 100 after a period of time not featuring. The Killers are this year, Blink 182 were last year and from memory Radiohead. Were Foo Fighters ever on that list too?
111. Joyride - Aunty Tracey's Cookies

Aunty Tracey's cookies got me f**ked up. Lying on my back, don't know where I'm at

Though your mind may well be in the gutter, the intentions here are good, as the song is very much inspired by Joyride's aunty Tracey and her homemade cookies. The track was also produced by Hermitude and gives Joyride his first big solo hit, having first struck success thanks to the flattery given to One Day.
Hard for Foo Fighters to have a comeback when literally every album of theirs they've ever put out (even an acoustic & greatest hits) has polled haha. Though they're running out of space to make an impact this year.
110. The Smith Street Band - Shine

"Shine" was the 3rd single released from The Smith Street Band's 4th album, an album which saw them see significantly increased success as it debuted at #3 on the ARIA Charts and was even voted the 4th best album of the year by triple j listeners. The song effectively follows on from "Don't F**k With Our Dreams" and is all about shutting out naysayers and accepting yourself for who you are. Replacing the word 'shine' in the lyrics with 'die' does not work particularly well.

108. Miguel (feat Travis Scott) - Sky Walker

Quick to dead the bull like a matador, right now I'm higher up than Canada

it's 🔥
107. Rex Orange County (feat Benny Sings) - Loving Is Easy
106. Mansionair - Astronaut (Something About Your Love)

Right now, I'm feeling like an astronaut, I'm fading to the thought of coming back to you

Curiously on what was not a big year for Australian artists on the international field, Mansionair were one of a very small handful to get a nod in this year's Grammy Awards, receiving a Best Dance Recording nomination, appearing on ODESZA's "Line Of Sight".
105. Slumberjack (feat Vera Blue) - Fracture

There's always something that pulls me in. When it's all done can we begin

In what is surely a colossal whiplash from when they first entered the public eye, this massive banger from Perth's Slumberjack is a collaboration with Vera Blue that was co-written by the nearly no longer absent from the music scene, Brooke Addamo also known as Owl Eyes. It comes from the duo's 2nd EP of the same name, and gave them their first taste of ARIA Chart success.

So close for Tame Impala. Thought this would be close.
103. Dean Lewis - Lose My Mind

But I think it's time to let you go, to let your heart find a home. I need to let you go

The double sided coin of getting a belated major push for your big single is that by the time it's popular, it's no longer eligible for the Hottest 100. When I counted up 2016's Hottest 100 votes, "Waves" landed in the 500s in my tally, one would imagine it would land quite strongly had it been eligible this year. Dean Lewis instead has to rely on his kicker of "Lose My Mind", a song that followed the lead of "Waves" by doing the oddly specific act of re-entering the ARIA top 100 and making its ARIA top 50 debut at the same time, and at the same position of #50. Unfortunately for him it never got any higher than that.
102. Stella Donnelly - Boys Will Be Boys

Like a mower in the morning, I will never let you rest. You broke all the bonds she gave ya, time to pay the f**king rent

Do yourself a wonderful favour and don't look at the comments on this video, instead just be hooked by Stella's beautiful singing about the very ugly topic of sexual assault. It's a message that's never been more relevant than in 2017. I of course have to rep Western Australia, with OUR VERY OWN Stella Donnelly picking up the Unearthed J Award in 2017.
Shame Stella couldn't crack the top 100.

Surely Jax is at the unlucky #101?
Tamey!! This Stella Donnelly track is lovely.

Chanel is pretty catchy, shame it missed out.
Wow at Jax Jones not making it at all!
Thought she was a definite in todays countdown. Shows how much I know.
I'm somewhat surprised Foo Fighters didn't figure at all when they did about as well in my count with Run as they did with Something For Nothing back in 2014!

Boys Will Be Boys & Chanel are lovely so quite bittersweet to see them here.
Others I thought could go either way and thought would crack the top 200 are:
ti amo - Phoenix
ran - Future Islands
motion sickness - Phoebe Bridgers and can't remember if
drew Barrymore - SZA made it or not but I thought they would make it in today's countdown.
This countdown was totally packed too. Some particular highlights:
- Another huge startoff, with L D R U, Carmouflage Rose, Cloud Control and London Grammar
- Very welcome entries that I wasn't really expecting from Maggie Rogers, Alison Wonderland, 6LACK, Billie Eilish and yaeji
- Arno Faraji comfortably making it; I had considered pushing Destiny's into my vote because I expected it to be borderline low top 200 where it could really use the help
- Don't Delete The Kisses, which was one of my votes
- History landing at #140 when I casually guessed it would land 'around #140' months ago

And a long list of shoutouts to: Lorde & Gang Of Youths' numerous extras (including Sober unexpectedly!), Tonight Alive, Travis Scott, Tired Lion (unlucky having 3 songs here), Tyler The Creator, K.Flay, Tiny Little Houses, Kendrick, Ali Barter, Amy Shark (glad Drive You Mad got recognition), ODESZA, MØ, The xx (I Dare You), Vera Blue (especially Private, but also I wasn't expecting Lady Powers at all!), Didirri, double Halsey, DOPE LEMON, Lana, Superorganism, Mac DeMarco, George Maple, Wafia, Ruby Fields, SZA, Flume bringing Ngaiire back to the countdown via his LAV, Milky Chance, Alex The Astronaut, Joey Bada$$, Seth Sentry, Vince Staples, Vallis Alps, Joyride, Miguel, Mansionair, SLUMBERJACK and Stella! Really unfortunate for Stella landing right at #102.

Disappointed that Ocean Grove (Thunderdome) missed out, as I thought it was a given and this is the only place it would get recognition. Hands Like Houses (Drift) and Samsaruh would've been great too, from what comes to mind.

Also, K8, you might like to know that Jax Jones is a man If you assumed he was the I Got U vocalist, that was actually an uncredited Kelli-Leigh.
I actually thought they were a male/female duo like 2 Unlimited.

I agree, this years Hottest 100 (and 200) was pretty decent overall.
Remarkably, this is the fifth year in a row where I've had 4 votes in the top 100 and 1 more vote in the 200 (the one more being Lana Del Rey's Love at #148)

When will the run of 4+1 end for me?
