Thought I should probably bring in the thread now to raise the appropriate hype levels. I am planning to tackle this bad boy by commencing it at 5:00pm AEDST, Sunday Feb 25th. The list isn't fully locked down as I have 2 people I'm potentially waiting on, but most of the groundwork is set.
This gives us 31 lists which is the biggest turnout ever. However due to so many diverse opinions, we do not have any big new point records. The #1 song has a clear lead however, and the highest scorer since 2012.
Here are some teasers to tease those who like to predict this thing:
-There are 5 artists with at least 4 entries in the top 100. These artists are very different from each other. -Two artists in the top 15 have never featured in any aus-charts combined countdowns before, one has been around for a considerably long time, the other has not -Everyone who contributed to this list has at least one of their top 10 featured in the top 100. -There are 3 or less songs in the top 50 that do not appear in anyone's top 10 -The #100 song is by an artist that has never made one of these lists before but has been very close -12 songs by Australian artists feature -A song featured in 9 people's lists missed out, but another song by the same artist and on less lists got in -2 songs, both by LGBTI+ artists are completely tied on points -2 sneaky songs that were in last year's top 100 have scored enough to do it again -All but 1 former #1 artist in this poll has some involvement in the top 110 -Speaking of #1's, we've got 7 ARIA #1 Singles and 9 ARIA #1 Albums represented in the top 100
See you at the same time indicated at the top of the thread!
Excited for this! Did the classic top 10 + 50/69/100 pred a few days ago. 1. Dua Lipa - New Rules 2. Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 3. Lorde - Green Light 4. Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE. 5. Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You 6. Imagine Dragons - Thunder 7. Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling 8. Ed Sheeran - Perfect 9. Kendrick Lamar - DNA. 10. Rita Ora - Anywhere 50. Rae Morris - Do It 69. J Balvin/Willy William - Mi Gente 100. initially predicted The Chainsmokers - Paris but that's certainly not it based on the clue (Based on that I think it might be Gretta Ray - Towers)
I think Adore & I Feel It Coming are the 2016 songs that made it & that I'm The One, What About Us & Too Good At Goodbyes are the ARIA #1s that didn't make it.
1. Lorde - Green Light 2. Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 3. Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE. 4. Dua Lipa - New Rules 5. Imagine Dragons - Thunder 6. Ed Sheeran - Perfect 7. Portugal. Yeah, I don't like to have to do it but it's what I do with all the 1 vote songs in the bottom 100 every year so it's consistency. No grief for Frank Ocean because he was on the upper side of a tie last year
since I last commented: Golden To Thrive, Baby, LUST., What About Us, Planet Hunter, I Know A Place <3 (shame it wasn't in 2016's but an appearance here is better than nothing), Beautiful Trauma, Lipgloss and 1UL
Love that I Feel It Coming and Chameleon were the two 2016 combined tracks. Taylor Swift ugh. Great to see Bad Liar, Let Me Down Easy, Young Dumb & Broke, Feels, Sorry Not Sorry, Chained To The Rhythm (#67 for me), The Man, Ubu and BOOGIE all in. Something Just Like This can be thrown in a garbage bin and set alight.
Just got home in time for the top 20 Despite this being a weak year for music in my opinion I think this aus-charts top 100 is actually probably the one I've enjoyed the most. Also really happy Do It made it to #44 and that Some Nights still has the all time high score.
Still can't believe Jax Jones couldn't crack the top 200 on the Hottest 100. Makes you wonder if time of year plays a part for some songs. Good to see it make this countdown. I should have had it higher than #30.
As my highest song, I'm so stoked to see this here, and so high!!! Thanks Beanster, K8, harley, villages, Hijinx, irelander and Effluvium for pushing this up, I was very worried about this when we reached the top 30. WHOO! This has made my night! Last edited:
My late inclusion hopefully impacted this chart in one way or another. Great top 2.
Hijinx, can you provide answers to your above questions. You probably have answered them during the show but I have had a busy day and am on the time poor side of things so a quick update would be awesome if you can. Cheers.
Another great list again! I had so much following through this, and I probably enjoyed it more when "HUMBLE." was #1 here than during the Triple J Hottest 100
My favourites in the top 100 were HUMBLE., DNA., Feel It Still, Cut To The Feeling, XO TOUR Llif3, You Don't Know Me, Touch, Sign Of The Times, Slide, What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?, Praying, Rockstar, BOOGIE, The Man, Silence, Feels, Havana, I Only Lie When I Love You, (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, 1UL, Lipgloss, LUST. Chanel, Liability, Homemade Dynamite, 3WW, Writer In The Dark, Lemon, In Cold Blood, ELEMENT. and Run For Cover.
My absolute favourite moments though were hearing Lipgloss (of course) and 1UL back-to-back, Lil Uzi Vert in the top 10 and BROCKHAMPTON and Sampha making it in the list.
As for 101-200, it would be Perfect Places, Marryuna, Hard Times, Mask Off, That's What I Like, Mama, Lights Out, The Way You Used To Do, Call On Me (Ryan Riback Remix), Let You Down, Little Dark Age, I'm Not Racist, Stardust, Man's Not Hot, Whatever It Takes, Run, Skin, Total Entertainment Forever, Ran, Now And Later, Yeah Right, The Underside Of Power, Unforgettable, Sober and Holy Books.
It almost goes without saying, but you do a great job with these Hijinx, and you should be very proud of your efforts. I hope you have a little time to relax now. I'm already looking forward to next year's list!
Now I'm just hanging out for 392414 to put together this year's image table...
Haha, they weren't really questions per say K8, but since you asked:
-There are 5 artists with at least 4 entries in the top 100. These artists are very different from each other. (Kendrick, Lorde, Ed, Katy & Gang Of Youths) -Two artists in the top 15 have never featured in any aus-charts combined countdowns before, one has been around for a considerably long time, the other has not (Steps & Lil Uzi Vert) -There are 3 or less songs in the top 50 that do not appear in anyone's top 10 (just one in fact, Something Just Like This) -The #100 song is by an artist that has never made one of these lists before but has been very close (Gretta Ray was #102 last year) -12 songs by Australian artists feature (5xGOY, Methyl Ethel, Samsaruh, Alfie Arcuri, Gretta Ray, Vance Joy, Cub Sport, Pnau) -A song featured in 9 people's lists missed out, but another song by the same artist and on less lists got in (referring to Pnau's singles) -2 songs, both by LGBTI+ artists are completely tied on points (Alfie Arcuri & Frank Ocean) -2 sneaky songs that were in last year's top 100 have scored enough to do it again (Pnau & The Weeknd) -All but 1 former #1 artist in this poll has some involvement in the top 110 (Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Adele, fun. (Jack Antonoff worked with Taylor Swift & Lorde), Daft Punk, Clean Bandit & The Weeknd all involved) -Speaking of #1's, we've got 7 ARIA #1 Singles and 9 ARIA #1 Albums represented in the top 100 (Edx2, Post Malone, Taylor, Harry Styles, P!nk, Camila for singles, The xx, Ed, Harry, Lorde, Lana, GOY, Killers, P!nk, Taylor for albums)
Cheers KB, sadly back to study tomorrow for me Last edited:
Thanks for the countdown, Hijinx! A lot of work goes into this, and it shows. Excellent stuff!
As for the countdown, this is the most "me" Combined a-c has ever had, so I'm clearly chuffed about it. 20 of my EOY showed their face in the top 100 (and 1 from my 2016 EOY!), with a further 10 from my "just missed" section!
Most songs in: D Man/JMcN (40), alley (39), K8 (34), savage (31) Least songs in: ChartGuru (5), NationOfZealots (7), Zacco (9), thewitness/brosa (10)
Lowest highest placing: Homemade Dynamite (#21), Wild Thoughts (#17), What About Us/Lemon (#15) Highest lowest placing: Lipgloss (#8), Chasin' (#9), Biking/If They Only Knew (#11), Golden To Thrive/Strangers/Midnight (#12), Towers (#13) - and, notably, XO TOUR Llif3 made the top 10 with no placings lower than #24
"HUMBLE." got an average of 417 points per contributor, which narrowly beats "King"'s 415 as the highest of the last 4 years; "Rather Be" had 359 and "Starboy" had 298. Looking at prior years, I count 449 for "Get Lucky", 478 for "Some Nights" and 590 for "Someone Like You", but they were probably under different points systems. I did notice that "Some Nights" was on 23 out of 28 lists, a real contrast to the last 3 #1s being on 48-54% of lists.
