The second studio album for American rapper Post Malone entitled "Beerbongs & Bentleys" debuts at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart this week, plus it also entered at the top in England, Ireland, New Zealand, The Netherlands and Norway (so far).

This is the first time that the words Beer or Bongs of even Beerbongs and also Bentleys have appeared in a No.1 album title, and this new chart topping set also becomes the 289th by an American act (solo, duo or group) to hit No.1 here, plus also the 229th by an Solo Male Artist (local or overseas), and Post Malone becomes the 151st American artist (solo, duo or group) and the 47th Solo American Male performer to hit the top spot. As his song "Psycho" takes the top spot on the singles chart, it also becomes the 127th time that an artist has occupied the top of both charts here in Australia, the last American act to do this was Taylor Swift with her track "Blank Space" and the album "1989" (1st Dec, 2014).

The tenth studio album and twelfth chart entry for Keith Urban (10 albums, 2 compilations) comes in at No.2 this week entitled "Graffiti U", becoming his seventh Top 10 and fifth Top 3 album in Australia, while the albums second single "Parallel Line" returns at No.84 this week, and his last No.1 set "Ripcord" is back in at No.84 over here on the albums chart. This past week the DVD and Blu-Ray release for 'The Greatest Showman' occurred here and the soundtrack for the album holds at No.4, while the Ed Sheeran former No.1 album " ÷ (Divide)" is down two places to its lowest position yet of No.5. Last weeks No.1 debut for J. Cole and "KOD" falls seven places this week to No.8 (it debuts at No.1 in both America and Canada), while the previous No.1 set in Australia for Gurumul Yunupingu and "Djarimirri" is down four spots to No.9 and the second Top 10 entry for Ed Sheeran and his second release "x (Multiply)" drops two spots to land at No.10.

Two further albums debut within the Top 10 this week, the twelfth studio album for Kasey Chambers, this time with The Fireside Disciples, comes in at No.6 entitled "Campfire", and by coming straight into the Top 10 this becomes her ninth album to claim a spot within the ten, while one place lower at No.7 is the second album for DMA's and "For Now", which lands one place higher than their debut set "Hills End" (HP-8, March 2016), thus this is now their second Top 10 set and highest charted album, while the album also came in at No.13 in England too.

I've added this week's ARIA Top 100 Singles chart entries to my site.

Hear them all here - http://top100singles.blogspot.com/2017/12/every-aria-top-100-single-in-2018.html
1. Thank god Post got #1 on the album chart
2. OMG SHAPE OF YOU IS OUT (it'll return next week tho)
3. Divide has hit an all time low
4. Album bombs suck
5. Stoney finally got its overdue cert
The chart coffin is being lowered... single handedly the worst top 50 chart on record.
If you want to disagree with me you’re honestly fucked in the head.
You’re getting an album on the singles chart.
We’re getting less & less variety.
Thankfully things evolve & situations like this get people talking which creates change.
Personally I think an artist should only be allowed to have 3 debuts in one week. The album tracks being on the singles chart is so annoying because people aren't listening to them because they like it, they're listening to it because they're listening to the album for the first time
How do you know that people are listening to albums tracks because they like it or not?

Glad to see all the Post Malone tracks in the chart. Makes the latter an accurate reflection of what was hot This week. Nevermind if That makes me a "fucked up" person

Also lol at Stoney going Gold just this week when it already us éligible for Platinum
I imagine IE would have been Greg Chappell in the infamous underarm bowling incident. He knew it was against the spirit of the game but the rules allowed it so he did it anyway...
I'm entertained by the narrative wherein Spotify realised they were 100% responsible for Drake blocking Psycho from debuting at #1, so they purposely shoved Nice For What down the HHA playlist so Drake wouldn't block him again.
What have sports got to do with music charts lol?
Once you get a few days into the week usually people start listening to their favourite album tracks but for the first few days a lot of the streams are people listening to the album for the first time
That's kind of true about everything in the chart. Nobody's (I hope) rushing to Spotify or Apple so they can urgently listen to "Nevermind", more likely it's just feeding into people's queues either via a curated list, or by a recommendation cycle that has curated lists feeding into it.
I know I'm old (40s, lol), but I have no idea what a Post Malone is, and I have a feeling I'm quite happy about that. Seeing one artist clogging up what used to be a diverse singles chart just makes me sad, and reminds me why I don't follow the charts anymore.

Warner and / or ARIA need to fix streams for Flames. Should've been Top 50 for some weeks now...
Yeah I've noticed that, I think its Apple streams are counting but not Spotify, presumably because the tag is slightly different.

I don't think that video streams count towards weekly charts indeed.

Will be a very close battle for #1 this week.
Yeah definitely gonna be a close call to make. I'm predicting Ariana as she was ahead of Drake on Spotify for at least half of the week plus she also would have a good sales gap between herself and Drake.

Also we might actually have an Aussie top 10 this week
See that's the tricky thing. I've learnt from following the UK charts that video streams count to Spotify's daily totals but not the official charts. I've no idea how the OCC make the difference or if Spotify does it for them internally, nor if it's the case for ARIA. It's because of the video on Hot Hits Australia that Ariana overtook Drake on Spotify but even saying that, I don't know how many streams are attributed to that (maybe 10-20,000 a day?) so her sales lead enough might be enough to compensate anyway

We may see a similar case with the LSD track which may chart lower than Spotify indicates thanks to video streams.

Interesting week no doubt.

I doubt ARIA bother to be honest. Moreover video sales used to count in the main Singles Chart so it would be logical if video streams were included
logical actions, the ARIA Chart

pick one
^ Good one haha.

Nonetheless, I don't think that ARIA are that bad to be honest. I'd pick for instance them over the OCC any day.

Yeah definitely, OCC mess around with the charts to try and make it interesting. I remember God's Plan dropped from #1 to #10 in one week even though God's Plan still had the sales and streams to be #1
Thanks for that link buls. I'm so glad that at least one journo has called out the farce that is this week's chart and album bombs in general. After the chart was released I was hoping that somebody would start a change.org petition or something because I don't have the time, energy or eloquence to do one myself. Apparently the UK charts have an 'Ed Sheeran rule' to limit the flooding of album tracks into their singles chart. It would be interesting to know if that was due to self-regulation or external pressure...
Having argued for a 'passive'/'active' streaming distinction to be made for some time, I'm glad to see an article put forward something very similar ("lean forward"/"lean back" streams). Beyond that, and some harder delineation between 'singles streams' and 'album streams', I don't think other solutions are viable. Arbitrary limitations like the UK chart imposes don't fix the problems they're designed to resolve - instead they generate new ones (look at 'Pray For Me', dropping out from #23 through the arbitrary three track limitations, re-entering at #32 the following week through the same rule, then dropping out again via the adjusted streaming ratio rule).

The aim has to be to reflect whatever the modern equivalent of a "singles sale" is. An 'active'/'passive' distinction (weighing the former heavier than the latter) is just an extension of the principle that a certain number of streams is roughly equivalent to a sale - it's far from a perfect measurement, but I'd say it works better to reflect the popularity sales seek to represent than the present uniform weighting does.

A more radical option might be to insist upon a hard line between 'singles' and 'albums' - but without any arbitrary limits on how many songs an artist can have qualify as singles. Maybe require a user to stream multiple tracks from the same album consecutively before they count towards albums chart figures, otherwise they're singles streams for the songs played? For a really radical option, maybe non-personal playlists should count as compilation albums: if you listen to 'New Music Friday' or 'Workout', that pushes the playlist up the albums chart, and doesn't affect singles. Right now, a single stream can count to both singles and albums chart, but a single sale doesn't: that seems inherently flawed to me, as would counting physical album sales towards the position of the singles it contains, which leaves delimiting album and single streams as the fairest option...

An album-bomb is highly unsatisfying, but if it arises under a fair system, it shouldn't be precluded. I think the active/passive distinction, and a harder border between singles streams and album streams, though imperfect, would go a long way to fixing the issues that seem to be arising.
Another crap article about how the ARIA charts are dying. Can't help wondering if the author actually is Paul Cashmere as he tends to write the same incredible amount of bullshit.
