Not many songs that I hate on here, but theres not much that I love either. Every single song sounds the same almost, Princess of china is the easy highlight, being the only actual good song on the album, the rest either all sound the same or are different and absolutely horrible.

By the end of the album I was sure it would not be something I would ever come back to for relistening, a bad effort from a band that could actually do some really cool stuff if they experimented more. 2*

Edit: After relistening to the album once again, just to see if my first opinion was going to be my only one - I found myself enjoying it a bit more. I still stand by that they're all fairly similar but for now they've earnt themselves another point. 3*

Edit2: Through listening to a couple of the songs I didn't like in particular, I find that they've once again grown on me - perhaps this album is one that will take a while to get into, but for the moment, I'm giving it another star. 4*

Nice album. It's good to see them go and try different directions.

I first want to put it out that this is the first ever Coldplay album I have listened to in full. I do consider myself to be a big fan of them and I will get around to reviewing their older albums first in which I am assurred will be a very good listening experience.

Although I should not judge whether this album is better than their others I do believe this an interesting direction for them. It's very different for them, and it would be something a lot of artists would avoid and I'm glad that Coldplay have had the guts to change their style from album to album, just like every band should.

Based off the singles from this album and from previous albums, this album is nowhere near as great as their others. I believe their last 3 albums were at a exceptionally high standard and that this one would be difficult to reach the level of the last one. I agree with this although this album itself is still very good.

I completely disagree with bsb745 that the album is quite samey. I think it's very experimental with lots of varying styles. Hurts Like Heaven, Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall and Don't Let It Break Your Heart are very upbeat tracks. You then have very slow ballad-like tracks such as Paradise, U.F.O. and Up In Flames that contrast with the upbeat ones. The instrumental intermissions provide some non-vocal variety. The featuring of Rihanna puts some more variety and Major Minus is almost in a completely different style altogether.

A lot of the album is dominated by the synthesizer however there are great tracks like U.F.O. and Major Minus that do not use it as much.

Despite my praise towards their great experimental ability, I feel that a lot of the album doesn't blend too well together. Maybe some tracks are too experimental lol.

My favourite tracks are Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall and U.F.O. The weakest tracks would be Princess of China and Up In Flames. Overall the album is very solid although the 2nd half is weaker than the 1st. It's a very good album altogether and a very good amount of effort has gone into this that deserves a lot of praise. Good work Coldplay!

Way better than their previous 2 albums, not in the same league as "Parachutes" or "A rush..." but still, I like this new direction for Coldplay.

Highlights: Hurts Like Heaven, Paradise, Charlie Brown, Us Against The World and Up With The Birds

I like that all of Coldplay's albums have a different sound to them, and this I think stands out the most from their other releases. "Every Teardrop is a Watefall"'s timely instrumentation queues and synth excess is a good indicator of how the sound of the rest of the album follows. "Hurts Like Heaven" right from the start is a highlight, and I'd rate the album higher if not that I wasn't still carrying spite at the absense of "Moving To Mars" which is better than every song on this album. But then I don't have albums instantly going to #1 around the world, so what do I know.

Quite a strong album, the first half is stronger than the second, but it's all quite good. All the singles are very good, as are several of the album tracks, with Up In Flames probably my favourite of those.

Great album, Standouts for me are easily Paradise, Hurts Like Heaven & Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall.

definitely their best album

Definately an album you could pick back up in 10 years time and still enjoy it's magic and mystery.
Coldplay have always managed to miss the mark in albums for me but this one is up as one of the best releases of 2011.

I actually found this Album to be quite underwhelming for Coldplay standards but it's still a nice Album in it's own right. Highlights are Paradise and DLIBYH. Overall it's passable but their weakest album yet.
