MUCH better than Castle On The Hill - this is the lead single (one of 2?) I would hope for from Ed Sheeran - though it's a problem that about 2 minutes through, I stop caring about the song. It's good enough to be a moderate hit to pave the way for (presumably) a much bigger smash later. 4.5*
*****
Was expecting an average song from him but this time he really delivers here, I like the verses better than the chorus. 4.5+

Sia lässt grüssen.

Langweilige Nummer, welche mir zu monoton ausgefallen ist und ausserdem überbewertet ist!!
Ed Sheeran wird mich auch hiermit nicht zu einem Kauf überzeugen! #next 3*+

I don't think much of this at all simply because it sounds like so much of what's currently on the radio.

The production is interesting however the song is quite by the numbers for me and I prefer the more personal Castle on the Hill single. His third UK#1. UK#1 for 14 weeks and Ireland#1. US#1.

3 million copies sold in the UK.

Totally goes through the motions and quite a predictably uninspiring direction for him. 2.5

Pretty decent.

Nothing amazing.
****
Actually not bad all things considered and it's likely this will grow on me further.
***
It's not so bad ...

Wow, who knew that even Ed Sheeran would sell out to this type of 'trendy' edm music that's popular nowadays. It's no surprise that this does not appeal to me one bit and is quite generic like alley pointed out. That being said it's actually not bad surprisingly for this kind of thing. Quite a disappointing return single but thankfully he also released Castle On A Hill which is way better than this.
******
Loving this song. Love that Ed is trying out new sounds and styles but still very much still sounding like himself and his own musical roots.

This is not the worst thing ever but i also never want to hear it again.

The song itself is ok. What is even more astonishing though is the fact that (as of time of writing), the song has just equalled the 13-week run at #1 that Coolio achieved back in 1995-6 with Gangsta's Paradise. Would not have expected anything near this long at #1 for Shape Of You.
******
Good song the lyrics can be sexual sometimes but other than that, I like it how Ed has tried new music especially the dancehall undertones in there

Finally got around to hearing this in full recently and THIS was #1 for 15 weeks? Whether I like it or not doesn't matter, it's that there doesn't seem to be anything special or unique about it at all. On the plus side it's a shitload better than some other atrocities that have topped the chart for almost as long.

Please kill this song.
**
Got boring quickly. What was so good about this song that made it last 3 months on top of the charts? Zzzzzzz.

It feels like a numbers game more than anything to me. I mean sure, you could point out that Sia had at least a couple of singles that sounded a little bit like this last year, and they were reasonably big hits to an extent, because Sia is a proven reasonable hit maker. But Sheeran? He's one of the big guns, his take on the exact same formula will sell more because he's got a near unrivaled star power. Not that he's super famous, but he taps enough demographics that seemingly EVERYONE listens to his music to some degree. The fact that not everyone seems to realise this has inadvertedly destroyed the UK Charts, as the OCC scurried to satiate the loudest commenters on their social media.

As a chart watcher, it's a bit of a disappointing affair to see that the biggest hit of the year is pretty much decided halfway into January (you can make a case for "Despacito", but all the charts and (non-YouTube) numbers are going to point to this). It just feels like something that's been earned through being unobjectionable rather than particularly interesting or memorable.

If I were to compliment the song in one way, it's that the inclusion of a light guitar strum in the beat is a clever way to dip into the tropical trend in a way that feels organic. It did unfortunately grate on me quickly though because the song's beat pretty much doesn't change for the entire duration.

The thing that puts me off the most is the lyrics however. I don't really rate Sheeran much as a lyricist, but he often has a way with setting a scene. It's just a shame that there's often not much diversity, to the point that 'Sheeran has a hook up at a random bar' is its own category at this point. It's been beaten to death at this point but the magnet lyric is moronic, the bedsheets lyric is gross, and an obscenely wealthy man being thrifty on a date is unflattering. The main hook is a bit questionable too, what is 'I'm in love with the shape of you' but a more subtle 'I just think you're hot'? The whole experience is an undesirable look into the mind of a womaniser. I never thought I'd long for the days when "Thinking Out Loud" was his biggest hit.
**
I liked this song at first because yeah it's pleasant and the beat sounds nice. But it really is quite possibly the laziest type of song he could've released as a lead single. It didn't take long to realise how lazy the production is, and this was particularly notable when hearing someone play the melody on a piano. Torture. "Sing" was certainly not the most original lead single out there but it did at least sound like he was trying, which worked in my opinion. This is a song I'd rather never hear again. Amazingly it has become one of the biggest hits of the decade despite how much little effort was put into it.
