If you'd asked me a year ago where their album would chart, I'd first express confusion at the fact that they are a group, and then I'd have thought they'd be lucky to break the top 40. Their meteoric rise in the months following has happened so fast that it's hard for me to grasp that it actually has happened.

And it really is surprising considering what they are. To my eyes, they don't exactly have any sort of brand or identity that sticks out, both in image and music. They do have a similar sort of production and beat work to Calvin Harris in parts, but without the flair; just some very carefully laid out tracks to sound good, but ultimately not lead very far.

Then I guess what surprised me later is that I enjoyed it. Perhaps it's a sort of Stockholm syndrome case as I found the leading singles to be progressively better and then by the time I got to the full product, most of my anxieties were gone. Maybe it didn't get much of a reaction out of me, but I couldn't help but admire some of the pretty sounds coming out of here, such as in songs like "Sundream" & "Two Clocks". I guess the album sounded like I expected it to, so fatigue can slip in (though having just 11 tracks helps), but I guess it's just a case of the rut that they stick themselves in.

To describe this album: Bizarre
To describe this album sonically: Serviceable.

Like Flume earlier this year this ambiance cafe style music has come from nowhere.
It just plods along without really coming to any real climax which is hardly worth the effort, time or money.

I guess this would be difficult to compare with 'Flume' mostly because of the style. 'Flume' has got a more Electronic sound going, but this album I would consider to fall under an Indie Dance sort of sound. This album would be a better 'café' album than 'Flume' though, as its ambiance is more welcoming and breezier. This album has such chilled/laidback sort of ambience with some cool sound and beats

Overall, this is a solid debut album for RÜFÜS. Although some parts of the album might be repetitive, and to an extent boring, these are some cool sounds occasionally going on, and (again) the ambience surrounding this album is quite cool.

Average: 4.1*
