I agree, Nate... I only recently learned what you just said. So, therefore, I guess it wouldn't have much use on Australian-Charts.com... that's ARIA's job.
But that's a sign of what's public wanted? The shops wouldn't ship particlar items in order to promote particlar artist, if so they would bankrupted in a shorter time.
Hey Everyone, There is so much change in the charts, I Was thinking that it's about time ARIA updated the accreditation awards. It couldn't b that hard to certify any song based on it's exact sales. Accreditation's should only b based on sales! not shipment. Who agrees? disagrees? would like to know your thoughts.
Nate - Just trying to make our official music charts better!
I also think Accreditations should be based on exact sales. And, Nelson, it hasn't been beyond certain record companies and such to dominate the music market in the past by shipping heaps of copies of one (or more) of their artists' singles so ARIA certifies their artist's single as more than what it actually sold, or to make it reach a higher position. Hopefully this practice will phase out as Downloads inevitably become a more popular means of music distribution than CD singles.
Not good to see that ARIA and music retailers are still yet to sort out Accreditation status in Australia. Mr. G - Naughty Girl. --> 17, 7, 9, 8, 12, 17, 19, 24. Faker - This Heart Attack. --> 48, 43, 25, 34, 32, 36, 30, 20, 30, 34, 27, 18, 9, 12, 10. Both have gone <G> However, Flo Rida & T-Pain - Low - 13 Weeks Top 12. Veronicas - Untouched - has spent all 18 weeks in chart this year. Both these songs surely deserve accreditation status! Let's not get started on poor UFO, Put Your Hands Up For Detrioit, Rock This Party.
It's up to record companies to give accreditations, not ARIA neither music retailers. But I agree with you, accreditations were a good indicator of what a single approximately sold. It's like in the US where many songs that reached the Gold/ Platinum status were certified (but it's not really a problem since we have access to the real sales for the US).
I suppose that Low, Rock This Party, How Far We've Come, Untouched & Into The Night have reached platinum in terms of real sales.
I Never Liked You, Tattoo, Put Your Hands Up For Detroit, UFO, Sweet About Me, Work, Wanna Be Startin Somethin must have reached Gold or are not far from that mark.
hope this helps, this is from aria, i got the top 100 album and singles with the accreditations for the year for those songs/albums that are ranked in the top 100 for any year.
i'll do the singles (with it's year end peak in brackets)...

I think I know the song your talking about. WOW, that did very well in Oz but it's not really heard of anymore. I think someone sang it on Idol a few years back. Did it chart well anywhere else?
hey did someone delete one of my posts about Sonia Dada? It's not there anymore and Nate replied to it with the lyrics to the song and that too is also missing.
According the very first ARIA Report, dated 14th January 1990, the following singles were awarded Platinum accreditations in the second half of 1989:
The Bangles - Eternal Flame Kate Ceberano - Bedroom Eyes Alice Cooper - Poison Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers - Swing The Mood Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting Bette Midler - Wind Beneath My Wings New Kids On The Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff) Roxette - Dressed For Success Roxette - The Look
...and the following went Gold...
The B-52's - Love Shack Daryl Braithwaite - One Summer Sam Brown - Stop! Grayson Hugh - Talk It Over Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers - That's What I Like Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire Julian Lennon - Now You're In Heaven Madonna - Cherish Madonna - Express Yourself Martika - I Feel The Earth Move Martika - Toy Soldiers Mental As Anything - Rock And Roll Music Kylie Minogue - Hand On Your Heart Kylie Minogue - Wouldn't Change A Thing Jenny Morris - She Has To Be Loved New Kids On The Block - Hangin' Tough New Kids On The Block - I'll Be Loving You (Forever) Prince - Batdance Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now Sinitta - Right Back Where We Started From Texas - I Don't Want A Lover Tone Loc - Funky Cold Medina Tone Loc - Wild Thing Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care Tina Turner - The Best
... and according to the ARIA end of year Top 50 chart for 1989, there were also these in the first half of the year (but this is by no means a full list):
Madonna - Like A Prayer (Platinum) The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (Platinum) Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy (Platinum) The Beach Boys - Kokomo (Platinum) Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years (Platinum) Womack & Womack - Teardrops (Gold) Ian Moss - Tucker's Daughter (Platinum) Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan - Especially For You (Gold) 1927 - If I Could (Gold) Roy Orbison - You Got It (Gold) Debbie Gibson - Lost In Your Eyes (Gold) Collette - Ring My Bell (Gold) Paul Norton - Stuck On You (Gold) The Proclaimers - I'm On My Way (Gold)
...and these in the second half...
U2 - All I Want Is You/Everlasting Love (Platinum) Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time (Platinum x 2)
According to the ARIA Yearbook from 1991, we can add in these accreditations from 1990:
PLATINUM: Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers - That's What I Like Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire Martika - Toy Soldiers Kylie Minogue - Better The Devil You Know The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody Tina Turner - The Best
GOLD: Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me Bobby Brown - Every Little Step Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise Cher - Just Like Jesse James The D-Generation - Five In A Row Guns n' Roses - Patience Madonna - Justify My Love Glenn Medeiros feat. Bobby Brown - She Ain't Worth It Bette Midler - From A Distance Lisa Stansfield - All Around The World Technotronic - Get Up! (Before The Night Is Over)
The Yearbook also states that "Infinity (1990's: Time For The Guru)" by Guru Josh only went Gold. I believe the Yearbook was published sometime later than the end of year chart, but make up your own minds which one you want to believe.
According to the ARIA Yearbook from 1992, we can add in these accreditations from 1991:
PLATINUM: Jimmy Barnes & John Farnham - When Something Is Wrong With My Baby Salt 'n' Pepa - Let's Talk About Sex
GOLD: Jon Bon Jovi - Miracle John Farnham - Burn For You Janet Jackson - Black Cat Kylie Minogue - Step Back In Time Rockmelons feat. Deni Hines - Ain't No Sunshine
According to the ARIA Yearbook from 1993, we can add in these accreditations from 1992:
TRIPLE PLATINUM: Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
DOUBLE PLATINUM: Guns n' Roses - November Rain Sonia Dada - You Don't Treat Me No Good
PLATINUM: Frente - Accidently Kelly Street Wendy Matthews - The Day You Went Away
GOLD: Color Me Badd - All 4 Love Guns n' Roses - Don't Cry Metallica - The Unforgiven Natural Selection - Do Anything P.M. Dawn - Set Adrift On Memory Bliss U2 - Mysterious Ways UB40 - Kingston Town
According to the ARIA Yearbook from 1994, we can add in these accreditations from 1993:
PLATINUM: Salt 'n' Pepa - Shoop
GOLD: Jimmy Barnes & The Badloves - The Weight Mariah Carey - Hero Culture Beat - Got To Get It D.J. Bobo - Somebody Dance With Me Madonna - Deeper And Deeper The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode
This issue also lists "The Day You Went Away" by Wendy Matthews as only having gone Gold. Presumably it's an error.
According to the ARIA Yearbook from 1995, we can add in these accreditations from 1994:
PLATINUM: Urban Cookie Collective - The Key: The Secret
GOLD: 20 Fingers feat. Gillette - Short Dick Man Alicia Bridges - I Love The Nightlife (Disco Round) Haddaway - What Is Love Metallica - One Pearl Jam - Animal Pet Shop Boys - Go West Sepultura - Third World Posse SWV - Right Here U2 - Stay (Faraway, So Close)
Presumably the Sepultura title is an EP which sold steadily in modest amounts over a LONG period of time!
According to the ARIA Yearbook from 1996, we can add in these accreditations from 1995:
PLATINUM: Mariah Carey with Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day
GOLD: Pato Banton - Baby Come Back CDB - Hook Me Up Harry Connick Jr. - (I Could Only) Whisper Your Name Tom Jones - If I Only Knew Joshua Kadison - Beautiful In My Eyes Nine Inch Nails - Closer Pearl Jam - Daughter * Pearl Jam - Jeremy * Pearl Jam - Merkinball (I Got ID) Red Dragon - Compliments On Your Kiss
* I seem to recall Sony importing large amounts of Pearl Jam's single catalogue and selling them widely, even at department stores like K-Mart. Presumably this accounts for these accreditations.
You are bang on the money about the Pearl Jam singles Chartboi! When Michael Jackson was in Sydney during his HiStory world tour I went to the Opera House where they had a special presentation to give to Michael. Afterwards my friends & I went back to Brashs at Town Hall (Underneath the long closed Planet Hollywood restaurant). I was just getting into Pearl Jam at the time & I think 'Hail,Hail' was the current single off "No Code". On this wall they had the WHOLE Pearl Jam back catalouge & I asked the guy if they were for real & why????? I remember him saying something about Sony was releasing back catalouge singles in mass. As you would suspect I spent a small fortune at the time
however i do believe the info i provided would be units that were shipped and not how many were actually sold.
also the info i provided was the status of the song of the date the year end chart came out.
i think ur info is probably more accurate as it's probably related more to actual sales?
i am also pretty sure wendy matthews single went platinum.
i also have 2 ask that i saw a top 50 list on here earlier (i am certain it was in this thread) that i did want to check out now that i have more time but i can't seem to find it at all. i can't even remember what it was about or who posted it but candle on the wind was #1, so can anyone help with that?
I once upon a moon ago, use to tape these shambolic countdowns & take the good clips out & sell the tapes to my indigenous cousins in the N.T (Too bad they don't have VCR's ). One countdown was Top 50 songs of 1997. I watched the whole damn thing thinking it would of been Elton John - Candle in the wind '97 or Celine Dion - My farts will go on. Guess what! I WAS WRONG!!!! Apparently Kylie Minogue's - Can't get you outta my head was the highest selling single of 1997! Work that one out smart guy.... Boohahahaha
The countdown you're referring to Dsavid was top 50 songs of the 90s.
I posted a few things yesterday and now they have been deleted. I asked about Sonia Dada's song and Nate replied with the lyrics to refresh my memory and those posts have been deleted also.
Hence why my message above doesn't make sense now that those posts have been deleted as I was responding to one of them.
"however i do believe the info i provided would be units that were shipped and not how many were actually sold."
ummm, yes correct, i never suggested otherwise. no matter which way you look at it a gold record = 35,000 shipped and a platinum record = 70,000 shipped.
"also the info i provided was the status of the song of the date the year end chart came out."
ummm. yes correct again. as i have stated in each post, the ARIA Yearbooks list all the gold and platinum accreditations for each year. i have merely cross-checked these lists against yours and added in the ones that missed the year-end charts.
"i think ur info is probably more accurate as it's probably related more to actual sales?"
ummm. no. it's the SAME information you have supplied, just extras to add to your lists. any contradictions i have found in the lists i have here against your lists have been mentioned but there were only a couple and i think they were errors.

I'm also working on a chart showing the biggest artists of that decade in the 90's...so stay tuned.
Christopher... just a question how do you know about the sales? i don't know the sales but i can tell you now that the list must be incorrect... You expect that the top 100 selling songs of the nineties excluding 2 all charted presicly in the top 10 of each year? N-Trance & Trisha Yearwood being the only 2 not to be in a year end top 10. that's simply impossoble in my opinion.
Aqua - Doctor Jones was a massive seller in 1997/1998. Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) spent 6 weeks in christmas period and charted 2 consectuive year in top 20 sellers yet couldn't manage to place in the top 20? especailly when others in the nsame years carted higher? The Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom the same big seller of christmas period and din't sell more than say you're making me high...? PLease this list is tabulated on year end charts and nothing more... i am disregarding this as official..
These are all valid points, and I agree with a lot of them. No-one for sure really knows sales...but this was a discussion on the validity of accreditations. To me, the end of year charts are an excellent way to produce a chart like this. And a lot more accurate than a lot I've seen. It does seem weird that all the #10's are gathered together, but there's no reason why this shouldn't be possible. But, 1993's #8 biggest seller "Cat's In The Cradle" is lower than 1998's #9 & #10 songs from Shania Twain. So it may seem like that's how it is done but really there are subtle differences. "Breathe" by The Prodigy, although spent ages in the Top Ten, could only manage #9 in the end of year charts with an extra 5 weeks of charting the year before. I think it's position is justified. But on this note, from about #30 down would be the very tip of all platinum (and some double) accredited singles. There would've been about 300+ in the decade. So the difference between "Breathe" being #84 and, say #40 might have been only 1000-2000 copies. I agree that "Pretty Fly" should be higher, and possibly "Unchained Melody" could be lower (I didn't tally the list...but as I said, it's the best one I've seen). But I also think that the accreditations totally confuse the sales. A few glitches in my printed charts from 1990 confirm that they weren't always accurate. 1990's "Show Me Heaven" by Maria McKee, the huge hit it was, shows no accreditation until a few weeks before leaving the Top 50. 1991's "Joyride" by Roxette, a #1 hit, showed no accreditation until it left the Top 10, then suddenly Platinum. As for Aqua, "Doctor Jones" was actually only #14 and #20 in the end of years for 97 and 98. This would only amount to mid-Platinum actual sales, not the 4xPlatinum it was accredited with. Also, Aqua's "Lollipop" in my printed charts debuted at #22 with a Platinum status. This clearly shows that singles around this time were shipped in huge numbers, but sold only a small amount of it's accreditation. This being the result of CD singles being a lot cheaper to produce, thus shipped in larger quantites than the vinyl of the early 90's. Which is why most of the big hits of the late 90's made it to 3x and 4x Platinum. Which brings me the last point. It's hard for me to believe that "Candle In The Wind" should be at #2, but I also don't believe it could've sold anywhere near the almost 1 million it was accredited with. Taking into account all the demographics in Australia, it would be more realistic that it would sell 250-300 thousand which puts Whitney in its ballpark. Remember the single being in bargain bins for a year after it's release? Anyway, as I said, I agree this may not be exact...but it's the best i've seen. But also proves that accreditations shouldn't be taken into account when following the charts. I hope this clears up a few things.
Accrediation's in 2008 have improved a little. though the following do need to change soon...
Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love <P>2 Veronicas - Untouched <P> Chris Brown & T-Pain - Kiss Kiss <P> Jordin Sparks - Tattoo <G> Kelly Rowland - Work <G> Michael Jakcson & Akon - Wanna Be Starting Somethin' 2008 <G> Presets - My People <G> Rogue Traders - I Never Liked You <G>
Sneaky Sound System - UFO <G> My Chemical Romance - Teenagers <G> Fedde le Grand - Put your hands up or detroit <G> Bob Sinclair - Rock this Party <P> Timbaland - Apologize <P>3 Santana - Into the Night <P>
I don't think that spending 12 weeks within the #25 and #50 spot is enough to sell 35 000 units.
Anyway, I don't think that Apologize has reached the 3 x Platinum mark but agreed with the others you've mentionned
I'll add also these ones:
Matchbox Twenty - How Far We've Come: Platinum Thirsty Merc - 20 Good Reasons: Platinum Linkin Park - What I've Done: Gold Camille Jones vs Fedde LeGrand - The Creeps: Gold Powderfinger - Lost & Running: Gold
rebeca big girls by mika has only reached a chart peak of 25 so i doubt that it will be accredited with anything. perhaps gold if it hangs around for a while
yeah ben i understand now..hopefully it stays awhile and get atleast gold so that all his single has accreditations..his song is all good..btw when his next single will come out??

Chad Kroeger <P> CAN'T TOUCH IT Ricki-Lee <P> UFO Sneaky Sound System <G> PUT YOUR HANDS UP FOR DETROIT Fedde Le Grand <G> What i've done - Linkin Park <G> Pictures - Sneaky Sound System <G> Give it to me - Timbaland <G> Teenagers - My chemical romance <G> Untouched - The veronicas <P>
If record companies are the ones who accredit singles then why has Warner accredited Madonna & JT and not The Veronica's single "Untouched" even gold?
For a song that has been in the chart for as long as Untouched and been a top 5 smash you'd expect it to be more than gold by now.
I find it rather frustrating that a song like "Naughty Girl" which has spent a total of 12 weeks in the top 50 and only 3 of them in the top 10 has gone gold yet a song like "Untouched" which has spent double the time in the top 50, correction top 35 and about half of those 24 weeks in the top 10 hasn't obtained gold status yet.
This is the one thing that is wrong with the Aussie charts. Accreditations really have no purpose anymore if they are not accurate.
I still have hope in "Untouched" becomming Platinum as "Hook Me Up" managed to do it.
Rob, you're assuming that Warner Music is one person. Different label managers look after different projects and thus different people are probably responsible for ensuring that their acts have the correct accreditations next to their names on the ARIA Chart.
However, I can tell you for nothing that most of them just don't care. It simply isn't that important anymore. Most people working in the music industry at the moment have much better things to worry about, like losing their jobs.

Ricki-Lee - Can't Touch It - <P> Chris Brown & T-Pain - Kiss Kiss - <P> Jordin Sparks - Tattoo - <G> Kelly Rowland - Work - <G> Presets - My People - <G>
I guess until we totally lose physical releases addcreditations will have to be based on shipments. There's no way to accurately show how many copies of a physical release are sold. In my local record shop for example, when you buy a single you just give the dude the money. There's no electronics involved.
Davo... We have established that accreditations are based on shipments of a physical format. As for your local store they would no doubt have records of what has been ordered for that specific store and know what to order and how much of etc etc.
So far this year accreditations have been more coorect than previous. for example...
Presets - My People was certified <G> this week, it's has sold more digital than physical and in a nutshell with such low physical sales it is quite clear that digital sales for the song were taken into account when accreditating it.
Those strange songs such as Veronicas - Untouched etc etc as chartboi explained in this thread that different labels are responsible for accreditations hence if their misin they ave matters to attend to of more importance.

How did "Can't touch it" by Ricki-lee go Platinum it is not even in the chart and Ganrls barkley "Crazy" is still Gold and it lasted longer in the chart.
Can someone post the certifications for The Cranberries & Bjork´s album/single please? Anybody Knows where i can find the chart-run for some albums from the 90´s in Australia? Thanks
I´m looking for the certifications and chart-run for these The Cranberries´singles and albums in Australia:
SINGLES: -Linger (93) -Dreams (94) -Zombie (94) -Ode to my family (95) -I can´t be with you (95) -Ridiculous Thoughts (95) -Salvation (96) -Free to decide (96) -When you´re gone (96) -Promises (99) -Animal instinct (99) -Just my imagination (99) -Analyse (01) -Time is ticking out (02) -This is the day (02)
ALBUMS -Everybody else is doing it, so why can´t we? (93) -No need to argue (94) -To the faithful departed (96) -Bury the hatchet (99) -Wake up and smell the coffee (01) -Stars. The best of 1992-2002 (02)
and also the album "Are you listening?" by Dolores O´Riordan (07)
untouched - not necessarily, leona's record company may not have updated her accreditation status yet. you can only use accreditations as a guide to how many copies singles / albums have sold.
take some examples from last year when singles are yet to accredited, such as any of the sneaky sound system singles, etc...
Rihanna will be the bottom of those 4. DSTM was out of the top 10 fairly quickly I thought. It made it's way very quickly to #1 and once it fell from there it dropped out of the top 10 within weeks.
The top 5 singles so far this year I would say:
1) Bleeding Love 2) Low 3) Sweet About Me 4) Don't Stop The Music 5) Untouched or 4 Minutes
As much as I want "Untouched" to be in the top 10 selling singles of the year, I somehow think it already might not be in the top 10.
Last year "Irreplaceable" everyone thought would of been a top 10 year end single but it came in at #43.
The same thing will happen with The Veronica's.
The top 10 so far this year I would say include: 1. Bleeding Love 2. Low 3. Sweet About Me 4. 4 Minutes 5. Don't Stop The Music 6. Pictures Of You 7. Crank That 8. No Air 9. American Boy 10. Piece Of Me
Apologize is currently sitting at #21 on the Urban chart and is still 2 x Platinum.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually the most downloaded song in Australia as it spent 8 weeks at #1 on the didital track chart. I remember that there was a huge gap on iTunes between them and the various #2 songs. Undercover also gave a few weekly sales figures for the downloads of the song which were quite impressive, it also sold more than 17 000 units digitally the week after Christmas.
Sorry for the double post but here are the 8 #1 singles of the year so far:
Timbaland & OneRepublic: Apologize: 2 weeks Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love: 5 weeks Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music: 4 weeks *1st single to become #1 without physical sales* Flo Rida & T-Pain: Low: 3 weeks Colbie Caillat - Bubbly: 1 week Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me: 5 weeks Madonna & Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes: 3 weeks Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown: No Air: 2 weeks (so far)
Half of these singles have enjoyed separated stints at #1 (Leona Lewis, Rihanna, Flo Rida & Gabriella Cilmi).
The turnover of #1's has also been slightly quicker than in 2007. At the same time last year, 7 singles had topped the chart (Irreplaceable, Light Surrounding You, Lips Of An Angel, Straight Lines, Girlfriend, Steer & Umbrella).
It'll be interesting to see whether that trend goes on during the second half of the year
Bubbly is a good song but not worthy of the #1 position. I would never of let it peak higher than #3. I'd love to see an accurate chart where only deserving songs hit #1. Half the crap that gets #1 is far from deserving. Although in saying that, out of 8 singles this year to hit #1, I say 7 out of 8 are deserving of the #1 spot.
Accrediation's in 2008 are becoming more up to date which is great to see.. though the following do need to change soon...
Colbie Caillat - Bubbly - <G> --> <P> Jordin Sparks - Tattoo - <G> --> <P> Kelly Rowland - Work - <G> --> <P> Michael Jackson & Akon - Wanna Be Starting Something '08 - <G> Newton Faulkner - Dream Catch Me - <P> Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me - <P> --> <P>2 Leona Lewis - Better In Time. <G>
These predictions have been based on a realistic basis. On the 18/05/2008 i made similar predictions in this thread all but one has been changed correctly.
Sneaky Sound System - UFO <G> My Chemical Romance - Teenagers <G> Fedde le Grand - Put your hands up or detroit <G> Bob Sinclair - Rock this Party <P> Timbaland - Apologize <P>3 Santana - Into the Night <P>
Dave; Like Wow-Wipeout only made it to No.15 in late 1985. There highest charting single was "What's My Scene" which hit No.3 in 1987. The album that the single came from called "Blow Your Cool" was their highest placed album, peaking at No.2 in April 1987. So no No.1's for the guys.
Okay, here goes!!! "Hit the Ground Running" was never a Hoodoo Gurus song. I have all their albums, plus they never released any album or single in 1986 called this title. The only people/groups who have released a song or album called "Hit the Ground Running" were Tim Finn (1993 Singles), The Porkers (1996 Single) and a group called Hit the Ground Running released their self-titled album in 2001.
So where you got your info from, I have no idea, but I ain't the one who's wrong!!!!
Does anyone have any info about Elton John's following accreditation albums, please? Thank you very much.

I've just gone through this thread looking for answers and have turned up none...
Do digital sales have ANY impact on accreditations? I pretty much know they don't, but I only ask as I've noticed that "Chasing Cars" is Platinum without a Top 50 entry and thought it wasn't physically released. Has it been physically released in HUGE quantities but too late for a Top 50 entry?
This has confused me for a while so thought I'd see if anyone out there has an answer.
Digitral sales do count in accreditations, that's why Chasing Cars is certified platinum although it never got released physically. And not many singles would be certified in the chart if accreditations didn't include downloads.
hey i'm looking for two songs but i don't know who the artists are or what they are called. can anybody help me please:
"oh where oh where can my baby be, the lord took her away from me, she's gone to heaven so i got to be good, so i can see my baby when i leave this world."
"this is what you get. this is what you get. this is what you get when you mess with us...for a minute there i lost myself."
So I'm thinking that the shipment amount is still used and then the actual amount of digital downloads is added on top. If this is the case, then digital sales haven't really made much difference on the amount of singles sales. I've seen more accreditations given in past charts during the 90's.
And Becky... "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam "Karma Police" by Radiohead (i think)
David; I appreciate that you got your information from that website, but the Hoodoo's never had a song called "Hit the Ground Running" whether it was in 1986 or 1996, it just ain't there's. Besides I am going off the official National and State charts to find this information.
This was posted on the 'first of the month' chart from ARIA...

T-Pain WAR
There's also the possibility that we're just going through a sales slump. Certainly album sales are low, so the same is probable for the singles.
I looked through my printed charts from 1991, as I remember the same lack of accreditation back then. Sure enough, for a few weeks in June 1991, out of the entire Top 50, there was only three Gold accreditations and that was it! And the #1 at the time, "Grease Megamix" received gold on its 4th week at the top. I understand that this was 17 years ago, but maybe music sales have peaked (late 90's/early 2000's) and declined back to these levels. With the amount of illegal downloads, it's not out of the question.
So, apart from the "Sneaky Syndrome", it's possible "No Air" hasn't reached Gold, and Aria haven't made a mistake. But expect a Gold for it very soon.
I think that we shouldn't forget some important points.
First of all, remember that a few years ago, accreditations were based on the numbers of copies shipped, therefore singles received accreditations very soon (for instance, Paulini's Angel Eyes was certified gold the first week whereas but her single 'only' sold 12 678 copies that week). Here, the context is completely different, the number of physical singles shipped is far less inferior than in 2004 or even 2006. With the inclusion of downloads, the single has less chances to receive an accreditation very early as real sales are more important.
Second of all, don't forget that chartboi told us that record companies cared less about accreditations that 'it didn't really matter anymore'. There are some singles that should obviously be re certified. For instance, the music network reported last week that Newton Faulkner's Dream Catch Me had sold 50 000 units. Yet, the single isn't even certified gold.
And from the sales that Undercover gave in 2006, 2007 and 2008, sales have improved. A #40 single in 2006 only sold around 400 copies, in 2007, around 600 units (downloads + Physical sales combined) were needed to enter the Top 40. At the beginning of the year, chartboi told us that Pete Murray should have entered the Top 40 (#37 or something like that, can't remember exactly) with more than 1 100 units. The same goes for the #100 single, last year, a #100 single in May sold around 150 units. Last week, the #100 single sold 327 units.
As for the number of singles certified question:
This week, I count singles 16 certified in the Top 50. on July 2nd 2007, there were also 16 singles certified in the Top 50 as well. On July 3rd 2006, onyl 13 singles were certified in the Top 50. In fact, I've noticed that record companies have started to bother less and less about accreditations from 2007. And although some singles should clearly be re certified, the number of singles accredited is higher than in 2006 & 2007.
To sum up, I think that like in the UK, the singles market is recovering and is definately better than in 2006 & 2007. The transition between physical sales & downloads is not completely over but once it will be the case, singles will sell better than ever, like in the US.
As for No Air, I won't be surprised if Sony gives directly a platinum accreditation in a few weeks.
hey guys just a question that ive always wondered. in 1996 the 'x files theme' by triple x made no.11 if i remember correctly at the end of year chart. this was based on a 'gold' accreditation. whereas songs under it had acheived platinum. donna lewis for example. did this song ever acheive platinum because on the original printed aria chart that i got from the cd store it had it as a 'gold' certification?
It's actually more difficult for the record companies to calculate total combined sales as most of them have to source sales figures from different systems and combine them, and also the DSP's (digital service providers) often have a delay in reporting their sales figures back to the companies. THEN, the form has to certified and signed off by one of the senior management at the company, and THEN it has to be sent off to ARIA for them to accredit the single. The process is a lot longer and painful than it used to be, when all it involved was consulting one system and pulling out one figure. As a result, requesting accreditations from ARIA is much lower down the list of priorities at record companies, particularly for singles, than it was a year or two ago.
So if you think something probably should have sold enough to go Gold or Platinum, it probably has. Don't lose too much sleep over it. It isn't ARIA's fault, it's up to the record companies to request accreditations based on their own sales reporting systems.
I just hate how singles that charted in the top 20's like Brian McFadden can go gold after 2/3 months and then a single like Untouched which was a #2 smash hit & stayed in the top 20 for well over 4months took 6 months to go Platnium.
It seems like the record companies don't give a rats ass about accreditations but they sure manage to give accreditations to the lesser deserving (wrong use of word) singles like Brian McFadden, Mr G, Axle Whitehead, OneRepublic & The Presets. I'm glad these songs have all gone gold but they went gold rather quickly imo where others like The Veronicas, Newton Faulkner & Leona Lewis have taken forever to get the right accreditation.
Aria and the record companies should focus on giving accreditation based on the download sales, not just physical.
how many different systems are there apart from itunes, does Aria calculate sales from yahoomusic, or BigPond, Aol
Does itunes provide sales figures for Aria, is itunes the most important digital provider for Aria to obtain weekly sales figures from??
Because of the digital music download boom, Aria should make some changes in the second-half of the year such as introducing accreditation for download sales only...

I think it was a mistake from ARIA. When you looked at the accreditations section, What Goes Around was accredited <P>2 indeed (I'm sure that they must have made a confusion with Sexy Back which IS certified <P>2). However, when it was charting in the Dance chart it was only <G>.

Thanx for the new accreditations bulion. Great to see that U + Ur Hand & When You're Gone certified Platinum.
However, My Love & Girlfriend seem to be totally overcertified. I can't see how Girlfriend has gone 4 x Platinum. The same goes for the double platinum cert of My Love. Last edited:
Hey Bulion, i agree with the certifications. However i have noticed that the accrediiations are much more precise this year. Some backtracking has occured which is good. I would love to see all the songs actually correctly accredited. Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend was the 2nd highest selling single of 2007 which only means Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry should be certified <P>4 or 5. As for My Love it has been a continual seller. Great to see Pink & Avril Lavigne certified <P> which i was unaware but am surprised to see other pink singles certified <G>
This year continues to provide more accurate sales. With a year end chart drawing closer each week it's important that companies back track to january to make sure those few artists get the accreditations. Based on 2008 only these hopefully will change...

As I was bored and doing some reading on Wikipedia about song facts I came across this and wasn't sure if it was wrong or right?
""You Sexy Thing" was covered by Tom Tom Club in 1992 on their album Dark Sneak Love Action. Two more covers were released at almost the same time as the 1997 re-issue of the Hot Chocolate original. Thus, for one week, the UK Singles Chart boasted three versions of the song. One cover was by the pop/dance act Clock. The other version, by T-Shirt, featuring Chloé Treend, went to number 1 in New Zealand and sold triple platinum in Australia. Hot Chocolate lead singer Errol Brown appeared in the film clip. Both were re-workings with the original music and lyrics but with new added additional rap/vocal segments."
Did the T-Shirt version go triple platinum in Oz? For a song that didn't even go top 5, I find it hard to believe that it went triple platinum. I thought it only went platinum, does anyone know?
I had a look at all of the accreditations for 1998, and the last chart entry of "You Sexy Thing" by T-Shirt, and it only ever achieved 1xplatunim status.

2008 has been a much better year for accreditations. They have been far more accurate and accredited at tHE right time. I am really hoping Matchbox 20 is accredited soon because their song was massive. It will probably be in the 2008 year end chart aswell as the 2007 year end. That should easily be worth <P>.
How come untouched by the Veronicas only ceritifed when it was at 28 in the charts. It was in like its 17th week and then it certifed Platinum, not even going gold for a week. Was it just that Sire Records didn't indicate ARIA yet??

This year accreditation have been more precise, earlier charts were based on shipping to stores... due to digital inclusion this is not as prominent.
For 2009 i will add Album accreditation's along with the singles i currently post.
Also i don't believe Emma Bunton had any other <G> certified singles other than What Took You So Long? [#10]. She is classified as a one hit wonder solo... Killing Heidi was anticipated to sell more due to earlier success also sales are higher at christmas so they probably presumed it would chart well.

Would anyone be able to tell me the last 3 songs to be accredited 3xPlatinum? And also your opinions on what song will be next/will another actually do it?
Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend <P>4 Anthony Callea - The Prayer <P>4 Shannon Noll - What About Me <P>4 Eminem - Lose Yourself <P>4 Guy Sebasian - Angels Brought Me Here <P>4 Delta Goodrem - Born To Try <P>3 Nelly & Kelly Rowland - Dilemma <P>3 Eminem - Without Me <P>3 Las Ketchup - The Ketchup Song (Asereje) <P>3 Shakira - Whenever, Wherever <P>3 Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Outta My Head <P>3 LeAnn Rimes - Can't Fight The Moonlight <P>3 Shaggy & Rayvon - Angel <P>3 Shaggy & Rik Rok - It Wasn't Me <P>3 Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag <P>2 Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby <P>3
These are the only songs within this decade that are above <P>2 Madison Avenue peaked at #2. Sales have been healthy i would expect it's possible either Low or So What or Just Dance to possibly be next...
Although, IMO, I only like about 3 of those songs, it is good see some songs this decade reaching the peaks of the 90s.
Thankfully, I can see some OK music reachin <P>3 next: Lady Gaga - Just Dance or Poker Face (either way, it is a new direction for Pop IMO) Kings of Leon - Sex is probably more likely than any other track (is Rock back?).
And then there are the things I can dream about:
The Presets - My People (to be honest, how hasn't this gone <P>2 yet) MGMT - Electric Feel (please, please, please stick around on the charts!)
On the downside though, who will be the first Non-Idol Aussie to break <P>3 since 2002?
Jessica Mauboy & Flo Rida - Running Back - <P>2 Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire - <P>2 Britney Spears - Womanizer - <P> Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody - <P> Ian Carey Project - Get Shaky - <G> Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) - <G> Natalie Bassingthwaighte - Alive - <G> Kevin Rudolf & Lil' Wayne - Let It Rock - <G> Pussycat Dolls - I Hate This Part - <G> MGMT - Kids - <G> Fall Out Boy - I Don't Care - <G> Secondhand Serenade - Fall For You - <G> Presets - Talk Like That - <G>
For 2008/2009 to have complete correct accreditations these are the final songs that need to be certified. 24 in total spanning from January 2008 to January 2009
Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me - <P> --> <P>2 Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air - <P> --> <P>2 Timbaland, Keri Hilson & D.O.E. - The Way I Are - <P> --> <P>2 Lady GaGa - Poker Face --> <P>2 Santana & Chad Kroeger - Into The Night - <G> --> <P> Matchbox Twenty - How Far We've Come - No Accreditation --> <P> Jason Mraz - I'm Yours - <G> --> <P> T.I. & Rihanna - Live Your Life --> <P> Beyonce - If I Were A Boy --> <P> Simple Plan - When I'm Gone - No Accreditation --> <G> Linkin Park - Shadow Of The Day - No Accreditation --> <G> Fall Out Boy & John Mayer - Beat It - No Accreditation --> <G> Mariah Carey - Touch My Body - No Accreditation --> <G> Timbaland, Keri Hilson & Nicole Scherzinger - Scream - No Accreditation --> <G> Nelly & Fergie - Party People - No Accreditation --> <G> Potbelleez - Are You With Me - No Accreditation --> <G> Jordin Sparks - One Step At A Time - No Accreditation --> <G> Empire Of The Sun - Waking On A Dream - No Accreditation --> <G> T.I. - Whatever You Like - No Accreditation --> <G> Flo Rida & Will.I.Am - In The Ayer - No Accreditation --> <G> Britney Spears - Circus - No Accreditation --> <G> Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody - No Accreditation --> <G> Kanye West - Love Lockdown - No Accreditation --> <G> 3 Doors Down - It's Not My Time - No Accreditation --> <G>
This year the entire year should techniquely be <G> and above accredited due to Panic! At The Disco - Nine In The Afternoon being certified and not making the official top 100 sellers. Position #46 and above should be <P> or above accredited. To date 3 songs require alteration, all of which are still charting. Position #31 was certified <P>2 and #29 also in the new year. Both singles sold a better quantity of physical rather than digital. I do believe both these certifications are incorrect and are based on shipping rather than actual units sold. If that were the case 31 songs would be certified multi-platinum which is just not possible at this stage only 2001 provided 20. Positions #3 & #8 were both certified <P>2 on television and fit in the parameters of bein certified multi where as position #9, #10, #11 & #12 also fit due to long chart presence.
2009 Should be the most spot on year in terms of accreditations, hopefully the public will embrace it as much as they enjoyed 2008 :-)
I agree with you but don't forget that Nine In The Afternoon spent 4 or 5 weeks in the digital track chart before it entered the combined chart and only sales of the combined chart are included in the annual chart. (digital + physical)
I know that there were no accreditation this week but I've noticed that Warner hasn't re certified any of its singles since the beginning of the year. Quite strange!
Poker Face has been on the chart exactly the same amount of time that running back has been, and has charted higher than running back in every single week that they have both charted
in that time poker face has spent a massive 8 weeks at number 1...
so i really now want answers as to why poker face is not being credited as a double platinum single....yet running back is??
poker face deserves to be accredited as double platinum and i really cannot understand why it isnt
This is what chartboi has written about accreditations earlier in this thread:
I think that Running Back is overcertified. It should be Platinum for sure, but not double platinum. Perhaps, Sony/BMG has shipped too many copies to record stores as accreditations are the number of copies shipped + the number of downloads 'sold'.
However, Poker Face must have clearly reached the double platinum status, it's just that Universal hasn't updated its accreditation.
I also think that "If I Were A Boy" by "Beyonce" has defintaley certified Gold by now, as "Sweet ABout Me' Px2. I also think that in 2006 "Gia Farrels" hit "Hit Me Up" defiately sold 35,000+ copes no doubt about it. I just think it's bullshit that accredidations are based on shipments and not sales, or they should at least give us sales that they actual have, even if they don't no exact what they have we should have. ARIA is going downhill fast.
Several Singles i think definately sold enough to be certified, or upgraded to a higher accredidation, but weren't.
Gia Farrel - Hit Me Up (Gold) I Love It - Sneak Sound SYstem (longest running single inside top 100 and not certified, bullshit) Piece Of Me - Britney (2xPlatinum for sure) Perfect - Vanessa Amorosi (Re-entered enough times to seel 140,000) No Air - Jordin Sparks (140,000+ definately)
I was also reading through the 1997 end oy year singles chart and i was shocked.
Ranking at #19 was "lollipop" by "Aqua" which was certified Gold, and further down the chart at like 31 was the Platinum accredited "Buses and Trains" by "Bachelor Girl". That chart is such bullshit, and it was like it was based just on pop culture. Even Aqua's huger hit "Doctor Jones" which that year certified 3xPlatinum (2xPlatinum in 96') was at #20. Rela stupid chart Last edited:
I agree about the fact that I Love It should be certified Gold and that No Air should be 2 x Platinum.
Perfect hasn't reached the 140 000 mark though. It's not because it has re entered many times that it has reached this amount. It's also sitting at #35 on the ARIA year end chart and only the Top 7 singles must have sold more than 140 000 units. Jessica Mauboy's Running Back and Chris Brown's With You might have been certified double platinum but they haven't sold so many copies in reality, I suppose that the record company must have shipped too many copies.
Same goes for Piece Of Me which is charting even lower than Perfect on the year end chart.
You've completely forgotten an important point about Aqua's Doctor Jones. Yes, it was charting at #20 in 1998 but it was also charting at #14 on the 1997 year end chart, so it has sold for sure the number of copies required for a triple platinum accreditation. As for Lollipop, it's certified Platinum, not gold.
Singles accreditations are not based only on shipments, they are also based on downloads sold.
I agree about the fact that ARIA should let us know some sales figures and I also think that it wouyld be sometimes more reliable if they were based on ARIA data but don't say that the chart is bullshit.

oTHEWR SONGS I THINK SHOULD'VE BEEN CERTIFIED DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF WEEKS INSIDE TOP 50. In my humble opinion, and observations majority of songs that make top 50 for 10 weeks usually certify Gold, and majority of single in top 5 certify.
All You Wanted - Michelle Branch spent a massive 20 weeks inside top 50, peaking at #25. Definatelly shuld've certified GOLD.
Everywhere - Michelle Branch spent 15 weeks inside top 50, and peaked at #19l.
1 Thing - Amerie - 15 weeks in top 50, perakede at #13.
Outta My Head - Ashlee Simpson, 11 weeks in top 50, peaked at #16.
If I Were A Boy - Beyonce - 15 weeks, #3 peak
Let Me Think About It - Ida Corr - #14 peak, 21 weeks
Stand - Jewel - #21 peak, 15 weeks
Faded - Kate Dearude - #8 peak, 15 weeks
So Real - Mandy Moore - #21 peak, 11 weeks
Hey Baby - No Doubt - #7 peak, 18 weeks
Are You With Me - Potbelleez - #15 peak, 15 weeks
Wait A Minute - PCD - #16 peak, 14 weeks
If Its Loving U WANT - Rihanna - #9 peak, 14 weeks
Were Coming Home - Rogue Traders - #14 peak, 14 weeks
Im Not Missing You - Stacie Orrico - #26 peak, 24 weeks
All the songs certified multiple platnium are at the top followed by the songs certified platnium and then certified gold. If a song is certerfied platnium down the end of the chart then that is because part of it's charting was from the previous year.

Black Eyed Peas did it with "Where Is The Love" and "Shut Up".
Does two triple Platinums in a row count?... Aqua "Barbie Girl" and "Doctor Jones". Also, Shaggy with "Angel" and "It Wasn't Me".
Also, Offspring 4x with "Pretty Fly" followed by a double for "Why Don't You Get A Job". Anthony Callea also achieved this feat with his first two singles.
A triple and a double for Delta in 2003. As did Shakira in 2002.
Metro Station's "Shake It" also went double Platinum this week.
Gold at 35000 and Platinum at 70000 have been the same benchmarks for 20+ years. Does anyone know if these measures will be changed one day? I sure know the population has taken a big increase in 20 years. And if they did change, what to set the new benchmark at?

@ Chartboi, I know they have been officially accredited, but on ARIA's accredidation section of their website, it has not been updated with this information. Goto 2008 accredidations and the songs i stated are still yet to be updated.
Jessica Mauboy - Burn - <P> Taylor Swift - Love Story - <G> Natalie Bassingthwaighte - Someday Soon - <G> All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell - <G> Lily Allen - The Fear - <G>
But they could still update it or put it in the 2009 section. And warner still hasn't certified any single since the beginning of the year and we're into March now... Quite strange! Last edited:

Nateboi, I like how you update us weekly on accreditation changes and do the to be updated still every month. Always an interesting read and keeps you up to date. Good job!!
There are so many songs that havent been certified, that i believe have sold more than 35,000 copies. "Michelle Branch" had "All You Wanted" and "Everywhere" both spend 15+ weeks in the top 50, and they were mostly at the lower end (Near their peaks of #19, and #25). "Beyonce" and "If I Were A Boy" is yet to be certified, which is stupid, since it was definately selling alot.
Billbeast there are many singles throughout the 00's that should have been certified. Eventually i will get around to a full list of what should be what... and also a few singles that shouldn't have scored an awesome accreditation. In regards to Beyonce - If I Were A Boy it actually was certified <G> but aria reserves the right to remove accreditation. why they have removed this is uncertain especially that the single is now <P> stage... The notes i post on accreditations tend to be accurate, though i still have not figured out why such acts such as Jason Mraz - I'm Yours are so far off or those porr songs that don't recive certification at all...

That's Not My Name was already sitting at #48 on the 2008 year end chart and almost all the singles in the Top 40 year end chart were platinum. It spent 6 other weeks in the Top 50 in 2009, which must have been more than enough to sell 70 000 units. And keep in mind that singles sales must have been quite high at the beginning of the year.
As for Alive, it was sitting at #73 on the 2008 year end chart and had this chart run in 2009:
12-8-11-17-22-28-37-44-36-36-49
So, it's not too surprising to see it going Platinum either.

Atlantic/Warner really needs to update it's songs properly.
Right Round has been accredited <P> yet I"m Yours is still only accredited <G> when it should be atleast a <P>2 by now.
Other songs from this label which haven't been accredited properly are all of T.I's songs. They should all be at <P> status or very close to. None of them have even accredited <G> yet. (Whatever You Like, Live Your Life & Dead & Gone).
30H!3's song should be very close to <G> too. I would expect it to be accredited after todays chart but considering it's part of this label I doubt it will.
Eric Hutchinson should be atleast a <G> by now with Rock n Roll.
Flo Rida's Low should probably be a <P>3 and not a <P>2 and In The Ayer should be a <G>.
I know understand why Matchbox 20's How Far We've Come, Simple Plan's When I'm Gone and Linkin Parks Shadow Of The Day haven't been accredited at all yet. They are all part of the Atlantic/Warner label.
Surprised The Veronica's have been accredited properly as they are part of this label but I do think Gabriella Cilmi who is only a <P> accreditation with Sweet About Me is more than that.
Every other label seems to be on top of their game with accreditations except for Atlantic/Warner.
NateBoi, I look forward to seeing an updated list of correct accreditations now that Kings Of Leon and a few of the current songs have been updated.

Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely) did receive a gold accreditation . I also think that Candyman may have also reached the double platinum status. It charted for 4 or 5 weeks in the Top 20 of the digital track chart before it entered the combined chart.
Fergalicious, Maneater & Crazy could also be eligible for Platinum status. Last edited:

Funny how the above songs that need accreditation updates are from the Warner label (Flo Rida, Decode, T.I., 30H!3 & Evermore).
The ones that are not (Natalie Bassingthwaighte & Jessica Mauboy) I believe are not quite due for updates but could be close.
I would also include T.I & Rihanna's song as well as Jason Mraz's song as both have a good chance of making the top 100 year end of 2009 so both will be considered hits of 2009.
OMG. Here i was thinking #1 single "Get The Party Started" by "P!nk" was only a 35,000 selling single. ARIA the dimwist never updated their archives with the Platinum certification, and i have proof it was certified. Below is the link.

Boom Boom Pow & Made You have been certified Platinum. The Climb got Gold this week as well. But I don't think we'll ever see Warner re certifying their singles. It's clear now that they really don't care.

I just want to raise a question - Are songs being accredited too easily these days? And if so why?
10-15 years ago it was standard that a gold single had medium or modest run in the top 10 or at worst a top 15 peak with a lengthly chart run. A platinum single was generally confined to top 3 singles.
Now songs seem to go gold at the drop of a hat. Take:
'Kiss me thru the phone' going gold in its 14th week on the chart with a peak of 16 and only 3 weeks in the top 20.
or 'Hush hush' going gold in its 9th week on the chart with a single week at its peak at #10.
Sober by Pink going double platinum with a peak of #6 and 18 weeks in the top 50? Please!
Clearly there is something wrong here with these premature accreditations.
Why?
1. Easy answer would be to say it reflects singles shipped to stores, but we know that most, perhaps more than 80% of singles are now sold digitally. So the physical single in the store should be less of an issue now than ever before. Surely digital sales should be able to counted more easily and therefore accreditations should be closer to the actual sales.
2. There are more sales of total singles now than ever before, after all the Australian population has been stedily rising over the past 20 years.
If 1. is true than it is time for the industry to be more accountable and accredite more acurately.
If 2. is correct than maybe ARIA needs to change it's accreditations to stop too many singles getting an easy gold or platinum single in a growing Australian population. Perhaps changing it to sales of 40,000 for gold and 80,000 for platinum would more acurately affect the sales in the growing Australian population.
Yes you are right HappyPeople. I Think they should make at 40,000 for Gold and 80,000 for Platinum. Sometimes Singles get over certified Eg "Running Back" so that can be the case too.

Thank-you for the extra accreditations Bulion! In response to Happypeople... I don't believe songs are being accredited "to easy" these days... In many previous years record companies would award the single a certification based on phyical copies shipped to stores... this was based on their predictions of what was most likely going to be a substantial hit. This created many certifications that were unwarrented. The certifications given now are also including digital quantity. they are more accurate but are not precise... They are a close indication of a song's performance... As record companies/aria and retailers don't work as one unit this makes it difficult for exact sales figures...
In regards to <G> and <P> being to low thus many recieving what you would classify as undeserving i believe at this current stage in time they are adequate... if the single market continues to expand the way it as since the introduction of digital i would say <G> should be 50000 with <P> at 100000 most likely before 2015.
Nateboi I think my above examples more than illustrate dodgy accreditations, so it is definately still happening. Are you suggesting we should rest on our laurels and let these dodgy ones slide and the industry continue to get this wrong?
I for one want more accurate addreditations from now on, and hope this will happen with digital sales taking an increasingly bigger share. Last edited:

Billbeast the same could be said for Sober by P!nk which went double Platnium. Doesn't make sense when songs like Jai Ho! have had a longer and much better chart run are only Platnium. Some of these accreditations don't make sense. Running Back, What Goes Around Comes Around and even My Love appear to be over certified. Forever by Chris Brown appears high also for a song that only peaked at #7.
It's no longer possible to use a single's chart performance to decide whether it has been overcertified or not. Take, for example, Madonna's "4 Minutes" last year. It appeared on the digital tracks chart for a few weeks before Warners allowed it to chart on the main singles chart, but those few weeks of sales contributed to its accreditation (even though they had zero impact on its official chart position). The simple fact of the matter is that digital singles sales have exploded now in Australia ("I Gotta Feeling" sold well over 100 000 copies during its run at #1 and has sold over 13k this week at #2. Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" was also selling over 10k at its peak (it's sold over 70k now). It's difficult to compare sales of big hits in the digital era to those of the physical era, because for many years, physical singles were very expensive, which kept sales low. A CD single costs the same amount today ($4) as a 7" vinyl single cost back in 1990 and digital tracks are even cheaper, so it's not the least bit surprising that more music is being sold (and more accreditations issued) these days.
With "One of the Boys" by "Katy Perry" being certified. It peaked at #40, swas digital only, and only spent 10 weeks in top 100. I really dnt believe it certified.
What about any sales that it had generated as an individual download since its parent album was released last year (and prior to its release as a single)? If it was digital only, ARIA would pretty much have a record of every copy sold, so verifying the sales figure would have been a very straightforward process.
Basically, what you're saying, then, is that ARIA and EMI are in cahoots and are falsifying records and awarding accreditations that aren't warranted....is that really likely??!! In the digital age, it would be extremely difficult to falsify data. The data weren't even falsified in the physical age - the problem was that product was certified based on what was shipped to stores and the number of copies returned to the record companies was never taken into account (so a single could ship 70 000 copies, but ultimately only sell 50 000, yet still retain the Platinum certification). You can't ship digital copies to stores - they're either sold or they're not. As it stands, EMI has proven to ARIA that they sold at least 35 000 copies of "One Of The Boys". You can doubt it, but you can't challenge it because to do so would be to bring the whole industry into question.

The record company applies to ARIA to have a single/album/DVD certified. It provides ARIA with proof that the product has shipped X number of copies (shipping receipts/invoices etc. etc.). ARIA then checks that the records are accurate and once they are satisfied that they are, they issue the certification. Product is only certified if the record company submits the application, so some product is never certified (even though it has sold enough copies for a certification) while others are undercertified (i.e. they've actually sold more copies than the certification indicates). Some product is also overcertified (way more copies have been shipped than have been sold or ever will be sold). This occurs because record stores are able to return unsold product to the record labels, but if the certification has already been issued, it is not changed (e.g. a record company might ship 140k copies of an album straight away, then have it certified 2xP, but it only ends up selling 70k and the stores returned 60k copies, meaning that it really only sold enough to be certified 1xP. The certification will not be changed, though).
If a record company chooses to skip a level of certification and apply for a higher one (e.g. go for Platinum without having a Gold certification issued first), this is completely fine. All they have to do is prove that 70k copies were shipped (plus it works out cheaper for them, because every time they apply for a certification, they have to pay ARIA to verify the records). If a record company doesn't bother applying for a certification, then it's not ARIA's fault - they just verify the applications that are sent to them.
Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but hopefully it's a bit clearer to you now!
I wanna know your source for statements like this you wrote above:
"For 2009 to have complete correct accreditations these are the final songs that need to be certified. 19 in total spanning from January 2009 to October 2009"
are you basing this on your own opinions on what should be certified or do you have actual sales figures on hand?
If it is your own opinion then it is worth just as much as mine or anyone else's on this site. Last edited:
This is based on both my opinion and they overall tally i ue to decide which should be accredited..
You also typed this... "If it is your own opinion then it is worth just as much as mine or anyone else's on this site."
to me that's rude and your being a f*cken jerk... i come in here to update everyone and to share some insight to one aspect of australian charts... and it's as vaild as the next that' not the fricken point... the point is when someone opens their internet to find out sme information it's all there for them... now along with these useless comments! Sheesh lately there is alot of competition to grab peoples focus on this site... i don't know why i bother... i should just skip posting and offering some info maybe i should cancel the weekyl countdown to and any input... what do you think happypeople?
happypeople - sales figures have been widely available for the last six months or so, so it's quite likely that Nateboi has based his findings on these.
I was just asking a question, no need to get defensive. I think it is important for people on here to state their sources of information. I thought you were probably using actual sales figures, perhaps you had aria inside info, but turns out they are your opinions. I think you should keep posting, this list is valid as I said I just like to know the sources of information.

Does anyone know if the Britney Spears Circus Album has been certified two times platinum? I knew it was really close towards its way out of the top 50 charts
Mariah... what?? do you mean: Mariah Carey - Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel Mariah Carey - Obsessed (Single) Mariah Carey - I Want To Know What Love Is (Single) or something else...
Yeah I was referring to Obsessed, it has been mentioned in some previous posts that it was meant to be accredited gold, but week after week it wasn't changed. It looks like it's been changed this week so that's good!

In The Kill goes gold. I wonder if it will make the top 100 year end? a peak of #26 got 3 Doors Down and MGMT last year. How has In The Kill charted in the top 100 all year round dows anyone know?
I am not all surprised to see In the Kill go gold, it has spent atleast four and a half months in the top 100, remember Mercy going Platinum, it managed that by lots of weeks between 51-100.
If anyone has the top 100 chart run of 'In the kill' I would love to see it..
@Happypeople & K8 I spent about half an hour going through the Pandora archives, but this looks right for the chart run of In For The Kill (La Roux). (Start: 8-Jun-09) 63-60-53-50-57-46-43-36-36-40-45-45-44-53-52-52-57-57... (that's as far as the archive goes)
In my opinion that is a pretty strong chart run, much better than Sway Sway Baby, which was a #2 hit. No problem about that, I go through the Pandora archives so often looking for chart runs (I just wish they'd update more often!). I probably should print them out or write them down some time soon as they do use quite a bit of internet. Unless anyone knows of a program of some sort that works really well with charts??? For example what do you use bulion?
In The Kill would have peaked at #26 if it hadn't have been for Michael Jackson. They were unfortunate that their highest peak position for this song was affected by MJ. I'd like to see this make the top 100 year end and it might just have a chance especially with the popularity of Bulletproof. If the song continues to stick around in the top 100 it might just appear on the year end.
I reckon it'll make the top 100 of the year. Though, there have been so many songs that've been accredited so being accredited isn't a guarantee anymore.
In For The Kill should be around #80 i think... Bulletproof might make top 50 even (:
Not surprising that TiK ToK's gone gold, according to auspOp, TiK ToK sold over 20,000 copies in the past week, and the last time a song sold over 20,000 copies in one week was the week after Xmas 2 years ago.
Lady GaGa - Poker Face - <P>6 Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling - <P>4 Ke$ha - Tik Tok - <P> Vanessa Amorosi - This Is Who I Am - <P> Jay Sean & Lil' Wayne - Down - <G> Lady GaGa - Bad Romance - <G> Robbie Williams - Bodies - <G> Stan Walker - Black Box - <G>
As much as it is impressive, it's really quite unbelievable. As I was saying to Nate today, the End of Year charts this year will be very interesting to see where these (over)accredited singles end up.
* With "Poker Face" nestled in the high Platinum's at the end of last year, that leaves just over 4xPlatinum sales for this year. So it has to be Top 3 for 2009 with the two Black Eyed Peas songs.
* "So What" by P!nk was just shy of 3xPlatinum last year, so will be joining the rest of the Platinum singles, while "Sex On Fire", verging on 2xPlatinum for last years year end, has 2xPlatinum sales to make up for this year. So it will be close to Top 10 for 2009 with the other double platinums.
Do you really think this will happen? I guess we'll find out in a few weeks. Last edited:
I also find it strange. It's like Boom Boom Pow being certified 4 x Platinum when it has sold just over 210 k units according to ARIA. There must be some other sales that are not counted in the ARIA charts perhaps.
Or ARIA made a mistake. It happened last year when Ne Yo's Closer was certified 2 x Platinum. The following, it had been amended received a Gold cert. instead.
Poker Face <P>6, I find that hard to believe it should be <P>4. Other over Certified Singles I have seen are Running Back <P>2 instead of <P>, Boom Boom Pow <P>4 Instead of <P>3 and of corse Closer <P>2 Instead of <P> but was then changed to <G>. Last edited:
It's possible for a single to have directly a plat. cert or go from 2 x Plat. to 4 x Plat. If, for instance, a single has sold 70k copies and that it was never certified, then the record company will certify it as a platinum seller.
Lifter: Closer is well certified as it's Platinum. Jessica Mauboy may have reached the 140 k mark in real sales after all this time but I'm not sure.
I do find it really strange as well for Poker Face to be <P>6, I thought it first as a mistake, but then calculated that to get that it would only need to have sold 420K copies, so I think it's right... but I hadn't realised that on 16 March it was accreditated <P>3, I know it's possible that they forgot to update it, but 210K copies, even in 9 months, after it's huge peak of sales consisting of 8 (I think) weeks at #1, it does sound like a mistake. NateBoi, in 1997, how much copies needed to be sold for one song to be certified platinum? Because if it was like now, that means it would've sold over 980K copies, PHYSICALLY ONLY....
Hey Guys, in 1997 the Accreditations were the same in 1997 as they are now in the 80's <P> was 100,000 and <G> was 50,000 this was changed due to the songs being unablle to sell that much. In regards to Lady GaGa being certified <P>6 this is correct and is something you will have to get used to... 2008 leading into 2009 had huge sales. Many singles are never accredited properly in fact Lady GaGa management obviosuly want her sales watched closely. In total 18 singles have been certified <P>2 and above alone in 2009. the last time sales were this healthy was in 2001. in 2006 it took under 100 copies to scrap into the top 100. to reach the top 20 was 1000 and above. in 2009 to reach the top 70 you need 1000 sales or more. Longer a song charts more likely it is to be certified presets - my people is an example <P>2 with only a peak of #14. Things will become way mopre accurate once physical is completely gone Last edited: 07/12/2009 09:50

Hi NateBoi, you say the accreditations in the 80's was 50K/100K, do you have a list of any singles accredited at these values (the only one I know is "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce at 3p)? Thanks.
Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway - <P>2 La Roux - Bulletproof - <P> Lady GaGa - Bad Romance - <P> Pitbull - Hotel Room Service - <G> Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man - <G>
There are a couple of year's worth of accreditations in the end of year charts bulion posted earlier in the year, I think 1980/81. "Shaddup You Face" was only credited with 1xPlatinum in those charts. They're in the pre-1980 section of the posts.
The accreditation page listed above has it at 3xPlatinum, but the new certification list will be out released next week for the month of December, so we'll have to wait and see what that says then, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday.
After I mentioned to ARIA that there had been no accreditation list for December, it appears on this weeks report:

Yeah, songs are overaccredited these days. One Time & Miami Bitch should definitely not be gold. Same with the Last Day on Earth; that shouldn't be <P> 2.
Err, The Last Day On Earth had scanned 138 449 units by December 21st, so its 2 x Plat. accreditation was long overdue.
Miami Bitch & One Time have probably reached gold in hard sales, it's just that singles sales are VERY high at the moment. They're definately not overcertified.

** Notice that there are no Warner accreditations here!!
Interesting find at AbbaWorld on the weekend. I always thought that the accreditations of the Gold and Platinum during the 70's and early 80's were 50,000 and 100,000 copies, but a Gold disc of theirs reads, "For sales over $50,000". Seems maybe this was measured in money taken before ARIA's copies system came into play.
Yeah, the early certifications seem to be inconsistent, presumably due to a lack of a standard. If you look at ABBA sales vs. certifications for the period it seems to roughly work out to 50k sales per gold album though. It's not surprising certs were given for $ in this case: up until 1975 certifications in the US were based on $ rather than sales, and in the UK it was up until 1979 for albums.
Prior to ARIA certifications, according to Noel McGrath's Encyclopedia Of Australian Rock, different labels gave different awards. Some gave gold, double gold, etc., some gave platinum. It seems like the standard was 25k sales for gold, 50k platinum (double gold) for albums, and double that for singles (50k for gold). Last edited:
I think the $ accreditation would be ideal for today's market, given that singles are now reaching 3x, 4x and 5x on the norm, even though they may very well be making less money than the earlier decades which hardly budged over 2x. Would certainly put those singles in their place.

Sweet Disposition double platinum is a great result for the boys!
The multiple platinum status's are getting out of hand. I have been saying it for a couple of years now, ARIA have to move gold to 40K and platinum to 80K. Can't have songs that peak in the top ten with a moderate chart run going double or triple platinum. Which I know would mean Sweet Disposition would not be double, but this needs to be fixed.

What about Next To You - already Gold with a peak of 22 and in for only 3 weeks so far Look At Me Now - already Gold after 4wks in Top 50, and She's Like A Comet - already Gold after 2wks in Top 50 and #47peak Who says - already Gold after not even reaching the Top 50!
IMO ARIA may change their units of Accreditation soon (<G>= 40,000, <P>= 80,000)
Don't forget that Next to You has been excluded from charting for many weeks which would help explain its accreditation
I'm of the opinion that the accreditations should stay as they are. They're supposed to indicate when a song reaches a personal milestone, independent of any other song. The problem that arises is that after a while, people begin to associate certain chart positions with certain sales figures, or that a certain number of songs should reach certain accreditation levels per year. While there may be more songs getting there these days, the fact of the matter doesn't change that a song still has to sell the same amount now as they did before to reach those accreditations. All it indicates is a healthy level of sales (in the singles chart at least!) and that should be rejoiced, not backlashed.
I thin one of the things that are affecting accreditation these days is that there are more than one way to buy a single. In the 'good old days', the accreditation was based solely upon one format - the CD single. You had to 'sell' 35 000 copies of that format to get get gold. Today people have a variety of versions they can buy that all count towards the end sale. The single version, the album version, the version of 3 different compilation albums. Which kinda plays around with the stats.
I do hear what you are saying Hijinx and it is valid and understandable. But I do think a slight adjustment is needed, because of the scenario presented in my above statement. I'm not articulating my thoughts well but it doesn't sit comfortably with me that a song that doesn't crack the Top 50 can still get Gold status.
The album chart is still working well and it is easy to compare new albums with old albums based on accreditation. I think perhaps ARIA needs to have different values for the singles charts and album charts like the UK charts does. In the UK you need to sell more singles to go gold, than you do yo go gold on the album chart.
I remember being impressed when I Will Always Love You went P4. These days it's almost a shock when a #1 single doesn't go P4. Hell going P2 was a massive acheivement back in the 90s.
I think there's no difference if singles are more highly accredited these days, it's just a number, and Hijinx is correct to say that it's a singles own milestone that counts.
However, comparing that milestone to past singles, and saying they have achieved the same point is totally unrealistic. Sure they sold the same amount of units, but the monetary value of sales is vastly different. Singles are sold for $2.19 these days in comparison to the $7 or $8 we had to fork out in the 90's. And while it is possible for a single person to spend that much on a single song by purchasing the single, video and ringtone, it would count as 3 units instead of 1. Of course they are going to sell many more units. I'm just surprised it took a few years for that difference to reflect to the point it has now.
I feel sorry for those songs in the 90's that had a monumental achievement hitting P4 as BillyBrett said, and I feel like they're a little ripped off.
A record company handing a framed platinum accreditation to an artist used to be a BIG deal. Now it's like handing over a drink coaster. I suppose $20 notes aren't what they used to be either
I think that while single sales have soared and seem to be out of whack with the success of the song compared to years gone past that it is partly because people have changed their buying habits in this digital age. While years ago they would buy the album if they liked one song, now days people are more selective. They download songs from the artists they like, and need a lot more convincing to actually buy an album. Hence one of the main reasons (apart from illegal downloading) that album sales have plummeted over the last 6 or 7 years. While some of the biggest stars are getting multi platinum singles these days, multi platinum albums aside from the gift albums like Susan Boyle's have become rather rare. Last year's highest selling Australian artist album had only reached double platinum by the year end, and the highest selling overseas album, P!nk's greatest hits album 4 x platinum by year end (partly due to it also being an ideal gift ).
So I think accreditations should stay as they are. Let the big stars have their multi platinum singles, even if they do devalue the mega hits from past years. They get precious little album love these days. Who could deny Bruno Mars is a huge star now, and yet with his album spending 41 weeks in the top 50, including 33 in the top 10, it still is yet to be certified double platinum. Only a few years ago spending that much time in the top 10 would have seen his album 4 or 5 times platinum by now. At least his single certifications help show his popularity to people who don't take notice of how many weeks his album has spent in the charts. Having said all that, I reckon they should stop counting all versions of a song and just the single version should count. Its sort of double, triple or even mega dipping with some artists releasing multiple remixes etc.

I can't even take these Accreditations seriously anymore, getting a Gold is basicly 2 or 3 weeks in the Top 10 or a month between 11-20. Hate how so many versions of things get included like the video and ringtone but even taking those out and it's still over the top. Good to see Gotye get P5 though but I fear that MLJ will overtake it in sales by year end.

Wow, January and possibly even Feburary must have had monsterous sales looking at the number of songs which are double plus platinum.
When listening to Nova today and hearing the top 200 Itunes downloaded singles I was surprised that "We Are Young" by Fun could only rank within the 200-150 range. Sales for March must have been fairly poor compared to January.

Makes a mockery of accreditations though Jinxie. If you want your old school shit to finally get that gold or platinum accred that it "deserves" then you just have to get it into a movie or advert or sung on karaoke TV.
Well I'm pretty sure they wouldn't ALL have gotten this treatment which renders that argument invalid, it's probably just Warner's typically very slow updating
My statement was a general one anyway. It applies to anyone. Plenty of old school artists have benefited in this way from media exposure in recent years. I'm sure you will find some way to "invalidate" that too. After all, you do always like to have the last say. ;PP
I am a big fan of accreditations, but they are becoming really silly. Keith Urban - Somebody Like You - <G> Did this song even chart in the ARIA top 100? Swedish House Mafia - Save The World & One - <G> i don't see this... Tyga - Rack City - <G> - nah uh. Also jumps like Owl City - Fireflies <P>4 --> <P>6..Why? I cannot tell what is correct & isn't. Jason Derulo the other month was over the top. What is so hard...? If it's eligible to chart, it means it's sold enough copies too, if it exceeds the figure then it's certified. None of this record companies requesting it. ARIA should say okay Warner your single is sitting on 37000 that <G> this amount $ please. Afterall your songs success is due to it's exposure on the Australian Chart also your money is going back into the industry. Overhaul required. Just hire me & i'll be happy to spend every waking moment going through your books from day dot to current to upgrade / downgrade & collect on funds it's not HARD! Last edited:

This is a great thread as i've finally found how Take That sold in Oz during their 1st time out singles wise, obviously being pre 1997 the AIRA website doesn't hold this info. Does anyone happen to know what sales certificate TT got (if they did achieve any) albums wise? I know Nobody Else (95) and Greatest Hits (96) did well. If anyone knows how their albums did sales wise that would really help! Thanks, Nirvanamusic87

Can we please close this thread and utilise ARIA Full Accreditations List. I am working my hardest on providing all information for Singles & Albums accreditations.
Nate, I have tried several times to get into the other accreditation list and it won't let me in, as TOO MANY changes have been made to the thread.
You might need to restructure the thread so it has 26 sections for each letter of the alphabet, and you can amend each section as needed, as at the moment it won't let me in.
BTW: Hijinx showed me how to transfer to another thread, so it's been done for now.

Hey can anyone tell me anything about when the original Australian accreditation levels (50k for Gold, 100k for Platinum) were introduced? I'm assuming it was all governed and overseen by the record companies themselves, prior to the advent of ARIA and the subsequent reduction of each threshhold to current levels (presumably also requested by the record companies, presumably to increase the number of accreditations awarded)... I'm making lots of assumptions with this. Does anyone actually know? cheers, Matt
