The 24th week of the year sees a new No.1 single in Australia, and it also becomes the 19th week of the year that a female act has lead the Australian Singles Chart. "No Air" by Jordin Sparks feat Chris Brown moves up one place on the charts to claim the No.1 position, taking over from the five-broken-week run of Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" which swaps places with "No Air".

It's the 937th No.1 single in Australia, and the first for Jordin Sparks, but the second for Chris Brown who hit No.1 back in January/February 2006 with "Run it!" It's also the second time this year that an overseas Music-Reality-Show winner has topped the Australian Charts. Leona Lewis hit the top of the Australian charts back in January, and back then she became the first foreign winner of an Idol-esque competition to hit No.1 here. Kelly Clarkson was the formerly highest placed such act, and now this week Jordin eclipses Kelly's highest peak of No.3 for "Miss Independent" (Sept 03) and "Since You've Been Gone" (Feb 05).

"No Air" becomes the fifth song to hit No.1 starting with the word 'No'. Previously there has been "No Other Love" (Nov 44), "No Trespassing" (Oct 63), "No Milk Today" (Dec 66) and the last one which was "No Scrubs" (Apr/May 99). There have been no songs with 'Air' in their title. It's also the third duet to hit the top this year (3 last year overall), and of the eight No.1's for the year, this is the fifth by an American artist.

"Perfect" by Vanessa Amorosi moves up to No.4 this week, matching her previously highest peak on the single "Shine" (No.4, May 2000). "Shine" only stayed at No.4 for a single week (upon debut), so if she moves up or stays here another week, it will become her biggest charting single (so far). Other tracks inside the Top 10 move around one or two places, with "Love Song" now reaching a new peak of No.9, and Newton Faulkner is now spending his fifth non-consecutive week at No.8 (Top 10 run: 10*8*8*5*6*5*6*8*8*8). Moving up to claim their third Top 10 single is Coldplay with "Violet Hill" which jumps up 7 places to No.10. Previously they've reached the Top 10 with "Speed of Sound" (No.9, May 2005) and "Yellow" (No.5, March 2001). The biggest climber of the week in Fergie's "Labels or Love" (29 to 16).

Highest new entry the top 50 is at No.25, "See You Again" by Miley Cyrus, which actually debuted at No.55 in last week's Top 100, thus meaning it climbs up 30 places this week. It's her first Top 50 single, but she has previously charted with two other singles, "Start All Over" (April 2008, No.58) and as Hannan Montana with "Nobody's Perfect" (Jan 2008, No.87).

Melbourne four-piece band The Getaway Plan debut at No.28 with their first Top 50 single "Where the City Meets the Sea". This single of course performed best in their home town, where it debuted at No.2, and it's taken from their February 2008 album "Other Voices, Other Rooms", and this track is the follow-up to their previous single "Streetlight".

"Are You With Me" by The Potbelleez debuts at No.31 this week, giving the former Irish boys their second Top 50 single in Australia. Previous single "Don't Hold Back" (No.49 this week) has achieved Platinum Sales status, and reached No.5 during it's 34 weeks run back in January.

Two songs debut lower down which will most likely climb when physical releases occur in the next weeks. At No.45 is "When I Grow Up" by The Pussycat Dolls, and at No.47 is "Homecoming" by Kanye West which has a physical release this week.

Chicago Hard Rockers Disturbed debut at the No.1 spot on the Australian charts with their fourth album "Indestructible", matching their No.1 debut on the US Charts this week.
This is the highest placed album for the four-piece outfit who have taken this and their previous two albums all to the top of the US Album Charts, but here they have been building to this placing. 2002's "Believe" reached No.32 in October, and the 3 years later (Oct 2005) they reached No.11 with "Ten Thousand Fists". Last week that album plus their first album "The Sickness" re-entered the album charts at No.83 and No.79 respectively.
It's album No.577 to have hit No.1 in Australia, and the first by an American Group since Panic at the Disco back in April. It's the 56th American Group to hit No.1 here in Australia, the 122nd American Artist and the 208th by an performed by an American.

"Sex and the City-The Movie" Soundtrack jumps up to No.4 this week and re-entering the Top 10 Albums this week are "Hand Built By Robots" at No.9 (up from 19) and the newly re-packaged "Exclusive" from Chris Brown which is up to No.10 (from 21). But the biggest climber of the week is the act with the new No.1 single in the country, Jordin Sparks' self-titled album is up 13 places to No.26.

What I thought might have claimed the No.1 album spot this week (it was another Warner artist instead) is the new album by Alanis Morissette, "Flavors of Entanglement", which debuts at No.17. It's her fifth studio album to chart in Australia, having started in 1995 with the 10 week running "Jagged Little Pill" (peaked in March 1996). This debut is close to her last effort, the No.15 debut of So-Called Chaos back in late May 2004.

Scotland's finest The Fratelli's debut at No.20 with "Here We Stand", and right behind at No.21 is the third Weezer self-titled album, this one subtitled The Red One. This one debuts two places lower than their 2005 album "Make Believe" (No.19).

yes! jordin claims no.1 n hope she stays
the chart this week has changed more dramaticaly then the last 2 weeks
love to see how new music will affect the chart next week
Maybe with this weeks predictions, people should put down their Top 10 for the upcoming week, and maybe what they think will debut and where it will hit.
this love n paralyzer
had HUGE drop!!
paralyer only dropped in digital of 3 places
i was hoping it would go top 10
hope fergie will rise with the sex n city storm
VIVA LA VIDA could of done well if label allowed it to chart
im talkin too much
interresting seeing
no rising of fergie's album with the re-release
and reentering out of no where P!nk - I'm Not Dead @ 35
was it cuz of price drop? wateva it is? good job!
Physical Sales:

No.1 - No Air - Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown

No.20 (New) - Collidescope - Stealing O'Neal
No.26 (New) - Are You With Me - The Potbelleez
25 to 18 - Love Song - Sara Barielles
30 to 22 - Start All Over - Miley Cyrus
I think that Viva La Vida, is not being eligable to chart
because Violet Hill is the first single.

Viva La Vida will chart in the upcoming weeks i hope.

But hey, at least Violet Hill entered the Top 10!!!

What a great chart this week. Loads of movement throughout.

Still very annoyed at Jabba skipping songs. He has skipped Leona Lewis' "Better In Time" for the past 3 weeks.

Gavin, can u please request that he play it next week when u e-mail him ur notes? Thankyou.

Another thing I found interesting in this weeks chart show was how Jabba said during an interview with The Presets that they would have a good shot at winning ARIA single of the year at the ARIA Awards.

Perhaps we can start a thread on ARIA awards and talk about what we think will be up for nominations and why?

The Dance category will be a tough one this year with artists such as The Potbelleez, Presets, Pnau & Mr G all being strong contenders.

I wonder if The Veronica's with be up for single of the year? Gabriella Cilmi & Faker will be strong contenders here I think.

Best female artist will probably be between Kylie, Delta, Vanessa Amorosi, Gabriella, Amy Pearson.

No idea who the male artist will be between. Possibles are Pete Murray & Axel Whitehead?

Group would probably be between Presets, Veronicas, Faker, Potbelleez, Rogue Traders?

Highest selling single will either go to Gabriella Cilmi or The Veronica's unless a massive Aussie single is released in the next month or 2.

Any one else have thoughts on this?
Veronica's will definately not be up for single of the year, the industry won't buy it. Mr G will not be nominated, it is a novelty song. Perth's The Panics should feature in the nominations as well as the Presets, Pnau, Faker and Gabriella Cilmi, also regulars like John Butler Trio, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Delta Goodrem, Kylie, Rogue Traders, Casey Chambers and Sneaky Sound System. Start a thread on this if you like. Plenty of possible discussion.

I have a query perhaps someone can help me with. On the Itunes top 100 right now Coldpay has two versions of Violet Hill, the single version at #8 and album version at #68. Do both the single and album version go towards the final chart position or just the single version? This goes for other songs in the same situation too.
Why wouldn't The Veronica's be eligable?

I understand why Idol contestants and Soap characters arn't eligable but The Veronica's don't fall in either of these two groups.

Some of the regulars you listed I don't recall anything from during the last part of 2007 and first part of 2008.

Sneaky Sound System cleaned up last year so they'll have minimal noms.

Kasey Chambers will only be nominated in country nominations as she's done nothing this year.

Kylie has bomed this year so I don't think she'll be nominated in all that much.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have done what over the past 12 months?

Rogue Traders get stung because the lead singer is a former actor. They should of won something a few years back with "Voodoo Child".

John Butler Trio also cleaned up last year so I don't think they'll have all that much success this year. They might have a chance with their song "Better Than".

And Delta I think would fall along the same lines as Kylie. "In This Life" might score her a few noms but other than that I think she'll be as big as previous years.

Album nominations I think would go to Pete Murray, Gabriella Cilmi, The Presets, Vanessa Amorosi, Cut Copy or possibaly Damian Leith but he has the Idol factor which will sting him.

Highest selling single would be between Delta, The Veronica's, Gabriella Cilmi, The Potbelleez & probably Vanessa Amorosi.

Mr G might get nominated for Comedy release but as it is from a TV show I doubt it will.

Faker, The Presets & Gabriella Cilmi will be the big winners of 2008.
my predictions for this weeks top 10 end...

#1 Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air.
#2 Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy.
#3 Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me.
#4 Rihanna - Take A Bow.
#5 Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect.
#6 Sara Bareilles - Love Song.
#7 Madonna, Justin Timberlake & Timbaland - 4 Minutes.
#8 Coldplay - Violet Hill.
#9 Newton Faulkner - Dream Catch Me.
#10 Usher & Young Jeezy - Love In This Club.

NEW Entries... Top 50.
Lil' Wayne & Static Major - Lollipop.

EXIT... Top 50.
Soulja Boy Tell 'Em & Arab - Yahhh!.
Axle Whitehead - I Don't Do Surprises.
Potbelleez - Don't Hold Back.

RE-ENTRY... Top 50.
Jesse McCartney - Leavin'.
Utah Saints - Something Good '08.

WHAT'S UP... ?
Coldplay - Viva La Vida.
Chris Brown - Forever.

BULLET... Top 50.
Kanye West & Chris Martin - Homecoming.
Miley Cyrus - See You Again.
Sam Sparro - Black & Gold.
Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Casey Chambers have both released solid albums over the past two months. Both acts will feature in aria nominations. Veronica's will get a nod for best pop release but I don't think they are heavy weights when album of the year and song of the year come round. Cut Copy will feature as you mentioned and also probably Cog, The Herd and Bliss and Esso.
Speaking of Aria nominations.....

I think that The Best Dance Release Top 5 nominees could
be Cut Copy, The Presets, The Potbelleez, Rogue Traders and Sneaky Sound System i hope.
Mr G and Pnau might miss out.

Gabriella Cilmi should get a lot of nominations especially in the breakthrough artist categories.

But i think that Aria judges will also look at the comeback queen Vanessa Amorosi, who had the second biggest charting hit of her career this year - Perfect.

Vanessa Amorosi and Gabriella Cilmi should get a lot of noms,
in at least 5 or more categories i hope.

For the male artists: Pete Murray, Damien Lieth, Kaz James, Axle Whitehead could get a few noms.

Can't wait until September when the nominees will be announced.
Hopefully there will be new categories introduced
in the Aria awards in the coming years.

Digital Single of the year, and Digital Album of the year
would be great additions.
Pnau will be in the dance category surely. "Baby" was a massive club hit. Pnau will be nominated before Rogue Traders & Sneaky Sound System. SSS's only release in the past 8 months was "Goodbye" which sort of bombed anyway.

Other than that Brnadon, I agree with what you say totally.

I like the new categories u suggested also.

Any predictions who will be inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame?
Thanks Josh

I agree SSS's Goodbye single, didn't last long on the charts.
Pnau should replace it then. I doubt that Mr.G will make it into the category.

Because digital music is becoming an important part of music charts worldwide, they should implement these changes as soon as possible.

New digital categories should be also be made for the Grammys, and the Brit Awards in the U.K.

My Aria hall of fame prediction i would like to see Kylie Minogue to be honoured.
She has the Aria awards most nominated female artist, and has won 16 aria's, which is more than any other Aussie female artist.
That is just my wild guess.
Hey Josh, and everyone else

I predict that Coldplay's comeback album "Viva La Vida"' will
debut at No.1 on the albums chart next week.
A lot of hype is surrounding the highly anticipated album.

Does anyone else agree with me??

My predictions for the Top 10 singles for next week are:

1.Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air
2.Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy
3.Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me
4.Coldplay - Violet Hill
5.Sara Barielles - Lovesong
6.Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect
7.Madonna & JT - 4 Minutes
8.Fergie - Labels or Love
9.Newton Falkner - Dream catch me
10.Flo Rida - Low
The above Top 10 prediction is wrong, because i forgot
How silly of me.

Here is my Top 10 again with Rihanna:

1.Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air
2.Estelle & Kanye West - No Air
3.Rihanna - Take a Bow
4.Coldplay - Violet Hill
5.Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me
6.Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect
7.Sara Barielles - Lovesong
8.Madonna & JT - 4 Minutes
9. Newton Falkner - Dream Catch Me
10.Flo Rida & Tpain - Low
yeah Kylie deserves it. I would like to see her honoured also.
I think the Aria Awars is great discussion, but can someone or the staff start a new thread and post exsisting comments of them in that thread rather than in tis week's chartifacts it's rather decieving.

Many Thanks.
i think that violet hill as high as 4 is unlikely now that viva la vida has been released and generally coldplay singles dont have a great track record. still its impressive that it made top 10. it would be good to see vanessa amorosi reach number one. shes touring so its a possibility, though it probably wont
All ARIA Awards/Nominations talk can now be done in the newly created thread on the topic.
my predictions for next weeks top 10
10 - newton faulkner - dream catch me
9 - flo rida - low
8 - coldplay - violet hill
7 - sara barellis - lovesong
6 - madonna - 4 minutes
5 - rihanna - take a bow
4 - gabriella cilmi - sweet about me
3 - vanessa amorosi - perfect
2 - estelle - american boy
1 - jordin sparks - no air
I agree with you Ben.

It would be great if Vanessa Amorosi could peak higher than number 4, then she would achieve the highest charting single of her career. She is this year's comeback queen.

It all depends on digital vs physical sales.

"Perfect" is going up and down on the Itunes chart.
Apart from Vanessa,
Coldplay are making a comeback this year with their new album "Viva La Vida..."

Hopefully the single "Violet Hill""will enter the Top 5,
i don't know why it hasn't been released as a physical single yet!!

"Viva La Vida" still isn't eligable to chart, probably because there is a focus on the first single Violet Hill.

But if it does it should bullet into the Top 20 or 10, based on downloads alone.

heres my prediction
1 - jordin sparks - no air
2 - estelle - american boy
3 - gabriella cilmi - sweet about me
4 - vanessa amorosi - perfect
5 - rihanna - take a bow
6 - madonna - 4 minutes
7 - coldplay - violet hill
8 - newton faulkner - dream catch me
9 - sara barellis - lovesong
10- flo rida - low

fergie in top 15
maroon 5 n rihanna rise with more airplay
when i gorw up in top 40
chris brown forever enter top 50

American Boy seems to chart at the same # for 2 consecutive weeks.

It's chart run so far has been:
so next week it'll go to #2 for 2 weeks and then poss #1 for 2 weeks and then it will fall to #5 for 2 weeks.

Be funny if that does happen.
Next 10 Digital downloads:
41 (37) - Are You With Me - The Potbelleez
42 (Ne) - When I Grow Up - The Pussycat Dolls
43 (38) - Untouched - The Veronicas
44 (40) - Piece of Me - Britney Spears
45 (45) - Homecoming - Kanye West
46 (36) - Stop and Stare - OneRepublic
47 (41) - Your Love is a Lie - Simple Plan

There has been a slight-return chart phenomenon when movies come out on DVD. It happened back in January when Hairspray and High School Musical 2 came out on DVD, and it might happen again this coming week, moreso because of what happened at the start of this year....

Alvin and the Chipmunks had a download Soundtrack and several nominated tracks which charted in January, "Funkytown" and "Bad Day". Now that the DVD is out in stores this week, and young kids, who are the new generation of music downloaders, will want to download those tracks again.
It could happen again when "Step Up 2: The Streets" comes out in the second week of July. The soundtrack for that is at the lower part of the Top 50, but it'll most likely jump back up for a few weeks around the time of the DVD's release.
Is this just something that I am noticing, or does anybody else see it.

There was one new entry inside the top 100 but outside the top 50 this week, it is...

#86 - Stealing O'Neal - Collidescope --> Good Effort... This track makes it's peak this week based nearly all on physical copies. As i have mentioned before it's imperative that Australian artists make a rather large impact in there first week of release or the single will suffer. Just the one week in the top 100 for this group.
Hi Bulion,

Yes i agree with you, i'm noticing the return-chart phenomenon too.

Because the Sex and the City movie is in cinemas,
the soundtrack has peaked at No.4 so far.., and could
still rise.

Hopefully there will be a soundtrack released
for the upcoming movie - Mamma Mia!
heres my prediction
1 - estelle - american boy
2 - coldplay - violet hill
3 - gabriella cilmi - sweet about me
4 - newton faulkner - dream catch me
5 - rihanna - take a bow
6 - jordin sparks - no air
7 - vanessa amorosi - perfect
8 - madonna - 4 minutes
9 - sara barellis - lovesong
10- flo rida - low

Wow, Coldplay are huge atm. Their song "Viva La Vida" has hit #1 on Billboard. I'm sure this song will hit it big down under in a matter of weeks. "Violet Hill" is currently in the top 10 and will only move up. Looks like 2008 might be a good year for Coldplay.
I agree with you Rhys

This will be Coldplay's comeback year, i predict
the album to debut on at No.1 in the U.S, Australia, and peak at No.1 in the rest of the world.

Viva La Vida is currently at No.1 in Australia's Itunes chart.
Next week in should enter the Top 50 singles chart hopefully.
Coldplay should get a No.1 single this year on the aria charts.

Either Viva La Vida or Violet Hill, could peak at No.1
based on download sales only.

Can't wait until Sunday to see whether Coldplay made it No.1
on the albums chart!!
Has Coldplay ever had a N0.1 hit in the U.K becuase I heard that they missed out on their first N0.1 spot in 2005 with 'Speed of sound' so they might make it to N0.1 in the U.K with either "Viva la vida" or "Violet Hill"
Hi Martin,

Coldplay's single "In my place" peaked at No.2.

Good news for you, is that Coldplay's single
"Viva La Vida" has peaked at No. 1 in the US Billboard
chart, making it their first number one in the US.

Apart from that, on Monday you can find out
how Viva La Vida charted in the UK Charts.

Hopefully Viva La Vida will bring them a well deserved number one.

I heard rumours that they debuted at No.1
on the Uk singles chart, because Coldplay
is eligable to chart this week in the UK.

Digital sales of the single should soar in the U.K. and

We will see if that is true on Monday. I predict that a single
off their new album will make it to number one.

Fingers crossed.
Apart from chatting about Coldplay??

Does anyone have any thoughts about the Top 10
albums for next week??

Maybe we could all try to start predicting the Top 10

Viva la Vida is on the chart...(top 10) ?!?!?! mentioned just then...
Yes there is a Top 10 debut for Coldplay, so EMI have obviously allowed "Viva La Vida" to chart this week, creating something of a history.

Predictions this week winner....

Martin, who got four correct, and they were in a row.

Stan and Nate got three each.

BTW, a high placed BIG dropper out of the Top 10 this week.

More at 6.
I was looking forward to listening to the top 40 on Nova but we had a blackout and I've missed #33-20.
Can anyone share what songs were at these positions? I have a dinner I have to go to tonight before Aria updates their website and I really don't want to wait til tomorrow to check it all out on the Aria website.

PS. What does Jabba have against Leona Lewis's "Better In Time". He never seems to play it on the Aria Chart show.

20 Party People
21 With You
22 Like Only A Woman Can
23 This Love
24 Black And Gold

26 When I Grow Up
27 This Boy’s In Love
28 Bubbly
29 Forever
30 Pictures Of You
31 This Heart Attack
32 Homecoming

are we allowed to give away songs that are under the top 10???
WOW just heard on Nova about the song that dropped out of the top 10...so unexpected!
As you are all hearing on the radio now (5:14pm), "Perfect" has fallen from No.4 to No.13 this week!!!

Something very odd with "Perfect's" drop. It's been in the top 10 on I-tunes all week. I would of expected "Low" to drop before "Perfect".

Must be an error.
Rhys, a part of ur prediction is not right....
Violet Hill is #9
You were right about Miley
viva la vida will be released!!!!!!! it will be in the top 100 right now
a bit late nicanat...
Viva la Vida is in the top 10 and will be hopefully No 1
!!!! at 'Perfect's drop will probably be edited
(It was #1 on iTunes)
... That means Martin's #1-4 is correct!

Coldplay wont debut @ #1. Sure it will get there, glad "No Air" will score a 2nd week on top.
get ready for Viva... it's next.
It still is a great debut...not many high debuts this year
Actually I noticed earlier in the week Sunday-Monday I saw "Perfect" down as low as #26. Now it has recovered to around #10. I think Viva la Vida will debut at #5 and Martin's predictions from 1-4 are right. From next week I will start to put my Top 10 Predictions in.
Is anyone else sick of "Sweet About Me"?

It's like rewind back to 2003 where a good song like "Born To Try" is massively over played and hangs at the top end of the chart for way tooooooooooo long!

C'mon Gabriella, as much as I like you I do want you to go away. I want "American Boy" to go #2.
Viva la Vida #6
Violet Hill #9

First time ever that Coldplay has 2 songs in the top 10

That was the first time I have heard that Coldplay song and I am puzzled over the hype about it???????

#1 on Billboard & debuts at #6 on Aria on downloads alone and all I thought of it was.... "yawn!!!!!!!!!!".

Does anyone else share the same thoughts as me???
I am a huge Coldplay fan & agree that Viva La Vida isn't anything special.

Although I don't mind the song I have to say they have had many better songs imo.

Yellow was 100 times better.
go viva la vida
No Air #1 for a 2nd week
Any thoughts on where Viva la Vida will be next week?
Viva la Vida should be in the top 3 next week
sweet about me is growing ancient
I Agree... congrats on coldplay with Viva la Vida Album #1
Hopefully you may be able to translate that in English for us nicanat!
im puzzled about the drop 'perfect' experienced this week... it just doesnt seem right. i was hell as sure i was seeing it in the itunes top 10 all week...

totally puzzled, totally puzzled.

I agree that the "Perfect" hit single dropping out
of the Top 10 came as a shock to me.

I was amazed, when i checked Itunes last Tuesday
it was as low as no.38!!!.

The small decline in downloads really affected her chart performance. How sad!!

It could all change next week.

No.24 - on the digital singles chart and
No.7 - Physical singles chart.

I don't get how Aria calculate it. Download sales are really
affecting her performance on the charts.

Oh well...
