The 24th week of the year sees a new No.1 single in Australia, and it also becomes the 19th week of the year that a female act has lead the Australian Singles Chart. "No Air" by Jordin Sparks feat Chris Brown moves up one place on the charts to claim the No.1 position, taking over from the five-broken-week run of Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" which swaps places with "No Air".
It's the 937th No.1 single in Australia, and the first for Jordin Sparks, but the second for Chris Brown who hit No.1 back in January/February 2006 with "Run it!" It's also the second time this year that an overseas Music-Reality-Show winner has topped the Australian Charts. Leona Lewis hit the top of the Australian charts back in January, and back then she became the first foreign winner of an Idol-esque competition to hit No.1 here. Kelly Clarkson was the formerly highest placed such act, and now this week Jordin eclipses Kelly's highest peak of No.3 for "Miss Independent" (Sept 03) and "Since You've Been Gone" (Feb 05).
"No Air" becomes the fifth song to hit No.1 starting with the word 'No'. Previously there has been "No Other Love" (Nov 44), "No Trespassing" (Oct 63), "No Milk Today" (Dec 66) and the last one which was "No Scrubs" (Apr/May 99). There have been no songs with 'Air' in their title. It's also the third duet to hit the top this year (3 last year overall), and of the eight No.1's for the year, this is the fifth by an American artist.
"Perfect" by Vanessa Amorosi moves up to No.4 this week, matching her previously highest peak on the single "Shine" (No.4, May 2000). "Shine" only stayed at No.4 for a single week (upon debut), so if she moves up or stays here another week, it will become her biggest charting single (so far). Other tracks inside the Top 10 move around one or two places, with "Love Song" now reaching a new peak of No.9, and Newton Faulkner is now spending his fifth non-consecutive week at No.8 (Top 10 run: 10*8*8*5*6*5*6*8*8*8). Moving up to claim their third Top 10 single is Coldplay with "Violet Hill" which jumps up 7 places to No.10. Previously they've reached the Top 10 with "Speed of Sound" (No.9, May 2005) and "Yellow" (No.5, March 2001). The biggest climber of the week in Fergie's "Labels or Love" (29 to 16).
Highest new entry the top 50 is at No.25, "See You Again" by Miley Cyrus, which actually debuted at No.55 in last week's Top 100, thus meaning it climbs up 30 places this week. It's her first Top 50 single, but she has previously charted with two other singles, "Start All Over" (April 2008, No.58) and as Hannan Montana with "Nobody's Perfect" (Jan 2008, No.87).
Melbourne four-piece band The Getaway Plan debut at No.28 with their first Top 50 single "Where the City Meets the Sea". This single of course performed best in their home town, where it debuted at No.2, and it's taken from their February 2008 album "Other Voices, Other Rooms", and this track is the follow-up to their previous single "Streetlight".
"Are You With Me" by The Potbelleez debuts at No.31 this week, giving the former Irish boys their second Top 50 single in Australia. Previous single "Don't Hold Back" (No.49 this week) has achieved Platinum Sales status, and reached No.5 during it's 34 weeks run back in January.
Two songs debut lower down which will most likely climb when physical releases occur in the next weeks. At No.45 is "When I Grow Up" by The Pussycat Dolls, and at No.47 is "Homecoming" by Kanye West which has a physical release this week.
Chicago Hard Rockers Disturbed debut at the No.1 spot on the Australian charts with their fourth album "Indestructible", matching their No.1 debut on the US Charts this week. This is the highest placed album for the four-piece outfit who have taken this and their previous two albums all to the top of the US Album Charts, but here they have been building to this placing. 2002's "Believe" reached No.32 in October, and the 3 years later (Oct 2005) they reached No.11 with "Ten Thousand Fists". Last week that album plus their first album "The Sickness" re-entered the album charts at No.83 and No.79 respectively. It's album No.577 to have hit No.1 in Australia, and the first by an American Group since Panic at the Disco back in April. It's the 56th American Group to hit No.1 here in Australia, the 122nd American Artist and the 208th by an performed by an American.
"Sex and the City-The Movie" Soundtrack jumps up to No.4 this week and re-entering the Top 10 Albums this week are "Hand Built By Robots" at No.9 (up from 19) and the newly re-packaged "Exclusive" from Chris Brown which is up to No.10 (from 21). But the biggest climber of the week is the act with the new No.1 single in the country, Jordin Sparks' self-titled album is up 13 places to No.26.
What I thought might have claimed the No.1 album spot this week (it was another Warner artist instead) is the new album by Alanis Morissette, "Flavors of Entanglement", which debuts at No.17. It's her fifth studio album to chart in Australia, having started in 1995 with the 10 week running "Jagged Little Pill" (peaked in March 1996). This debut is close to her last effort, the No.15 debut of So-Called Chaos back in late May 2004.
Scotland's finest The Fratelli's debut at No.20 with "Here We Stand", and right behind at No.21 is the third Weezer self-titled album, this one subtitled The Red One. This one debuts two places lower than their 2005 album "Make Believe" (No.19).

What a great chart this week. Loads of movement throughout.
Still very annoyed at Jabba skipping songs. He has skipped Leona Lewis' "Better In Time" for the past 3 weeks.
Gavin, can u please request that he play it next week when u e-mail him ur notes? Thankyou.
Another thing I found interesting in this weeks chart show was how Jabba said during an interview with The Presets that they would have a good shot at winning ARIA single of the year at the ARIA Awards.
Perhaps we can start a thread on ARIA awards and talk about what we think will be up for nominations and why?
The Dance category will be a tough one this year with artists such as The Potbelleez, Presets, Pnau & Mr G all being strong contenders.
I wonder if The Veronica's with be up for single of the year? Gabriella Cilmi & Faker will be strong contenders here I think.
Best female artist will probably be between Kylie, Delta, Vanessa Amorosi, Gabriella, Amy Pearson.
No idea who the male artist will be between. Possibles are Pete Murray & Axel Whitehead?
Group would probably be between Presets, Veronicas, Faker, Potbelleez, Rogue Traders?
Highest selling single will either go to Gabriella Cilmi or The Veronica's unless a massive Aussie single is released in the next month or 2.
Veronica's will definately not be up for single of the year, the industry won't buy it. Mr G will not be nominated, it is a novelty song. Perth's The Panics should feature in the nominations as well as the Presets, Pnau, Faker and Gabriella Cilmi, also regulars like John Butler Trio, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Delta Goodrem, Kylie, Rogue Traders, Casey Chambers and Sneaky Sound System. Start a thread on this if you like. Plenty of possible discussion.
I have a query perhaps someone can help me with. On the Itunes top 100 right now Coldpay has two versions of Violet Hill, the single version at #8 and album version at #68. Do both the single and album version go towards the final chart position or just the single version? This goes for other songs in the same situation too.
#1 Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air. #2 Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy. #3 Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me. #4 Rihanna - Take A Bow. #5 Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect. #6 Sara Bareilles - Love Song. #7 Madonna, Justin Timberlake & Timbaland - 4 Minutes. #8 Coldplay - Violet Hill. #9 Newton Faulkner - Dream Catch Me. #10 Usher & Young Jeezy - Love In This Club.
NEW Entries... Top 50. Lil' Wayne & Static Major - Lollipop.
EXIT... Top 50. Soulja Boy Tell 'Em & Arab - Yahhh!. Axle Whitehead - I Don't Do Surprises. Potbelleez - Don't Hold Back.
RE-ENTRY... Top 50. Jesse McCartney - Leavin'. Utah Saints - Something Good '08.
WHAT'S UP... ? Coldplay - Viva La Vida. Chris Brown - Forever.
BULLET... Top 50. Kanye West & Chris Martin - Homecoming. Miley Cyrus - See You Again. Sam Sparro - Black & Gold. Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Casey Chambers have both released solid albums over the past two months. Both acts will feature in aria nominations. Veronica's will get a nod for best pop release but I don't think they are heavy weights when album of the year and song of the year come round. Cut Copy will feature as you mentioned and also probably Cog, The Herd and Bliss and Esso.
Pnau will be in the dance category surely. "Baby" was a massive club hit. Pnau will be nominated before Rogue Traders & Sneaky Sound System. SSS's only release in the past 8 months was "Goodbye" which sort of bombed anyway.
Other than that Brnadon, I agree with what you say totally.
I like the new categories u suggested also.
Any predictions who will be inducted in the ARIA Hall of Fame?
I agree SSS's Goodbye single, didn't last long on the charts. Pnau should replace it then. I doubt that Mr.G will make it into the category.
Because digital music is becoming an important part of music charts worldwide, they should implement these changes as soon as possible.
New digital categories should be also be made for the Grammys, and the Brit Awards in the U.K.
My Aria hall of fame prediction i would like to see Kylie Minogue to be honoured. She has the Aria awards most nominated female artist, and has won 16 aria's, which is more than any other Aussie female artist. That is just my wild guess.
I predict that Coldplay's comeback album "Viva La Vida"' will debut at No.1 on the albums chart next week. A lot of hype is surrounding the highly anticipated album.
Does anyone else agree with me??
My predictions for the Top 10 singles for next week are:
1.Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air 2.Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy 3.Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me 4.Coldplay - Violet Hill 5.Sara Barielles - Lovesong 6.Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect 7.Madonna & JT - 4 Minutes 8.Fergie - Labels or Love 9.Newton Falkner - Dream catch me 10.Flo Rida - Low
The above Top 10 prediction is wrong, because i forgot Rihanna. How silly of me.
Here is my Top 10 again with Rihanna:
1.Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air 2.Estelle & Kanye West - No Air 3.Rihanna - Take a Bow 4.Coldplay - Violet Hill 5.Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me 6.Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect 7.Sara Barielles - Lovesong 8.Madonna & JT - 4 Minutes 9. Newton Falkner - Dream Catch Me 10.Flo Rida & Tpain - Low
I think the Aria Awars is great discussion, but can someone or the staff start a new thread and post exsisting comments of them in that thread rather than in tis week's chartifacts it's rather decieving.
i think that violet hill as high as 4 is unlikely now that viva la vida has been released and generally coldplay singles dont have a great track record. still its impressive that it made top 10. it would be good to see vanessa amorosi reach number one. shes touring so its a possibility, though it probably wont
my predictions for next weeks top 10 10 - newton faulkner - dream catch me 9 - flo rida - low 8 - coldplay - violet hill 7 - sara barellis - lovesong 6 - madonna - 4 minutes 5 - rihanna - take a bow 4 - gabriella cilmi - sweet about me 3 - vanessa amorosi - perfect 2 - estelle - american boy 1 - jordin sparks - no air

There has been a slight-return chart phenomenon when movies come out on DVD. It happened back in January when Hairspray and High School Musical 2 came out on DVD, and it might happen again this coming week, moreso because of what happened at the start of this year....
Alvin and the Chipmunks had a download Soundtrack and several nominated tracks which charted in January, "Funkytown" and "Bad Day". Now that the DVD is out in stores this week, and young kids, who are the new generation of music downloaders, will want to download those tracks again. It could happen again when "Step Up 2: The Streets" comes out in the second week of July. The soundtrack for that is at the lower part of the Top 50, but it'll most likely jump back up for a few weeks around the time of the DVD's release. Is this just something that I am noticing, or does anybody else see it.
There was one new entry inside the top 100 but outside the top 50 this week, it is...
#86 - Stealing O'Neal - Collidescope --> Good Effort... This track makes it's peak this week based nearly all on physical copies. As i have mentioned before it's imperative that Australian artists make a rather large impact in there first week of release or the single will suffer. Just the one week in the top 100 for this group.
heres my prediction 1 - estelle - american boy 2 - coldplay - violet hill 3 - gabriella cilmi - sweet about me 4 - newton faulkner - dream catch me 5 - rihanna - take a bow 6 - jordin sparks - no air 7 - vanessa amorosi - perfect 8 - madonna - 4 minutes 9 - sara barellis - lovesong 10- flo rida - low
#1. Jordin sparks - No air #2. Gabreila Cilmi - Sweet about me #3. Estelle feat. Kanye west - American boy #4. Rihanna - Take a bow #5. Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect #6. Madonna - 4 minutes #7. Sara Bareilles - Lovesong #8. Coldplay - Violet hill #9. Newton Faulkner - Dream catch me #10. Usher - Love in this club #11. Flo rida - Low #12. Fergie - Labels or love #13. Miley Cyrus - See you again #20. Sam sparro - Black and gold
New Entries inside Top 50:
Lil Wayne - Lollipop Coldplay - Viva la vida Panic at the disco - That green gentleman Muse - Take a bow Mika - Relax (take it easy)
Leaving the top 50:
Potbellez - Don't hold back Soulja Boy - Yaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! Axle whitehead - I don't do surprises Simple plan - Your love is a lie The getaway plan - Where the city meets the sea
1. Jordin Sparks Feat Chris Brown - No Air 2. Rihanna - Take A Bow 3. Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me 4. Estelle Feat Kanye West - American Boy 5. Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect 6. Sara Bareilles - Love Song 7. Coldplay - Violet Hill 8. Madonna Feat. Justin Timberlake - 4 Minutes 9. Newton Faulkner - Dream Catch Me 10. Miley Cyrus - See You Again
Wow, Coldplay are huge atm. Their song "Viva La Vida" has hit #1 on Billboard. I'm sure this song will hit it big down under in a matter of weeks. "Violet Hill" is currently in the top 10 and will only move up. Looks like 2008 might be a good year for Coldplay.
Has Coldplay ever had a N0.1 hit in the U.K becuase I heard that they missed out on their first N0.1 spot in 2005 with 'Speed of sound' so they might make it to N0.1 in the U.K with either "Viva la vida" or "Violet Hill"
Does anyone have any thoughts about the Top 10 albums for next week??
Maybe we could all try to start predicting the Top 10 albums, not only just the singles
Here is my prediction for the Top 10 albums next week in Australia:
1.Coldplay - Viva La Vida... or Death and all it's friends 2.Sex and the City: Soundtrack 3.Disturbed - Indestrubtable 4.The Offspring - Rise and Fall,Rage and Grace 5.Usher - Here I Stand 6.Pete Murray - Summer at Eureka 7.Vanessa Amorosi - Somewhere in the real world 8.Chris Brown - Exclusive 9.Newton Faulkner - Hand built by robots 10.The Presets - Apocalypto

Take A Bow - Rihanna 6. 4 Minutes - Madonna, Justin Timberlake & Timbaland 7. Violet Hill - Coldplay 8. Love Song - Sara B 9. Low - Flo Rida 10. Dream Catch Me - Newton Faulkner
I think there will be a bit of a shake up in this weeks top 10.
1. No Air - Jordin Sparks/Chris Brown 2. American Boy - Estelle/Kanye West 3. Sweet About Me - Gabriella Cilmi 4. Take A Bow - Rihanna 5. Perfect - Vanessa Amorosi 6. Violet Hill - Coldplay 7. I was looking forward to listening to the top 40 on Nova but we had a blackout and I've missed #33-20. Can anyone share what songs were at these positions? I have a dinner I have to go to tonight before Aria updates their website and I really don't want to wait til tomorrow to check it all out on the Aria website. Thanks.
PS. What does Jabba have against Leona Lewis's "Better In Time". He never seems to play it on the Aria Chart show.
20 Party People 21 With You 22 Like Only A Woman Can 23 This Love 24 Black And Gold 25 Tattoo 26 When I Grow Up 27 This Boy’s In Love 28 Bubbly 29 Forever 30 Pictures Of You 31 This Heart Attack 32 Homecoming 33 Break The Ice
Martin's top 10 "#1. Jordin sparks - No air #2. Gabreila Cilmi - Sweet about me #3. Estelle feat. Kanye west - American boy #4. Rihanna - Take a bow #5. Vanessa Amorosi - Perfect #6. Madonna - 4 minutes #7. Sara Bareilles - Lovesong #8. Coldplay - Violet hill #9. Newton Faulkner - Dream catch me #10. Usher - Love in this club"
Martin's right guesses will be songs 6-9. 1-4 will all by a spot lower to make way for Coldplay. #10 will be Miley Cyrus.
1.no air 2.american boy/sweet about me 3.american boy/sweet about me 4.perfect/take a bow/4minutes 5.take a bow/perfect/4minutes 6.take a bow/4minutes 7.low/dream catch me/love song 8.low/dream catch me/love song 9.dream catch me/love song/low/violet hill 10.violet hill/love in this club 11.work/love in this club 12. better in time/work/party people 13. party people/elevator/work 14.elevator/labels or love/work 15.labels or love/elevator 16.like only a woman can/bubbly 17 like only a woman can/bubbly 18.bubbly/this love/paralyzer 19bubbly/this love/paralyzer 20.bubbly/paralyzer/this love
Actually I noticed earlier in the week Sunday-Monday I saw "Perfect" down as low as #26. Now it has recovered to around #10. I think Viva la Vida will debut at #5 and Martin's predictions from 1-4 are right. From next week I will start to put my Top 10 Predictions in.
