"I Kissed a Girl" maintains it's hold on the top Australian Singles charts for a second week, helped along by a physical release in the past week. Also the song that moves up to No.2, The Pussycat Dolls' "When I Grow Up" was released physically during the week, and that helps give the troupe their third No.2 single. Previously they've been here for two weeks apiece with "Stickwitu" (Dec 2005) and "Buttons" (July 206).
"I Kissed a Girl" is the only song in the Top 10 to hold steady this week, as everything else moves up or down. Other than The Pussycat Dolls, Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown climb to new peaks, but two songs speed themselves into the Top 10.
"Shake it" by Metro Station is the highest climbing single of the week, jumping 21 places to No.4 on downloads alone (physical release is August 11th) it's helped along by it's use in the new US edition of "So You Think You Can Dance". Another promo driven single that benefits from the actual artist's visit to this country is "Black and Gold" by Sam Sparro which zooms up 12 places to No.5, and also helps his album to land at No.23 this week. And thirdly, a mention must go to Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" which jumps up 8 places to No.25 this week, helped also by it's use in the promo for new Channel 7 series "Packed to the Rafters". His album becomes the biggest climber on the album charts this week, up to No.20.
Sneaky Sound System get the highest new entry at No.16 this week (downloads and physical combined) with their fifth single "Kansas City", the lead track from their forthcoming second album "2", which is out August 16th. Their previous highest effort was the No.11 single "UFO"(June 2007), and below is their previous singles... 17-July-06*HP-25*WI-16 - I Love it 11-Dec-06*HP-19*WI-32 - Pictures 07-May-07*HP-11*WI-38 - UFO 22-Oct-07*HP-33*WI-07 - Goodbye 05-Nov-07*HP-42*WI-02 - I Love it (Re-Entry) 05-Nov-07*HP-39*WI-03 - Pictures (Re-Entry)
Stefani Germanotta was born in Manhattan in 1986, and was influenced by Queen, David Bowie, Madonna and other pop acts while growing up. She is now known as Lady GaGa, and she debuts with her first single "Just Dance" at No.34 this week. The song was performed at the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant two weeks ago, and she'll making an appearance at the end of July of the US edition of "So You Think You Can Dance". She has previously found fame as a songwriter having written material for such acts as The Pussycat Dolls.
Usher debuts at No.42 with "Moving Mountains", his second single from the former No.1 album "Here I Stand" (No.15 this week) is the follow-up to the No.8 single "Love in This Club" which is still charting at No.22.
When ABBA released their "Abba Gold" album back in 1992, they took one single from it and re-issued it. And that version of "Dancing Queen" reached No.37, and became their only charting single for the 1990's. Coming in at No.48 is "Mamma Mia", charting due to being issued last week as a digital single. The original version of "Mama Mia" (spelt that way in Australia) started it's journey on the charts the week of 22-Sep-1975, reaching No.1 in seven weeks, and staying at the top for 10 unbroken weeks. In fact it was the last No.1 single of 1975, and was the second of three consecutive No.1's in a row for the trio, having been preceded by "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do", and followed by "SOS" in the second week of 1976. Now they make history by joining AC/DC, Marcia Hines, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Queen, and Santana by becoming only the seventh artist to have a Top 50 charting single over four different decades (1970's, 80's, 90's and 2000's) (Blondie almost did it, but their 1999 single "Maria" only made it to No.59). As for Cher, Tom Jones & John Farnham they did it over five decades, whilst Cliff Richard is the only six decade-span that's been achieved.
And continuing on the ABBA thread, the biggest moving opening in Australia last week was the theatrical version of the stage musical "Mamma Mia!" starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. And now the soundtrack from that film climbs from No.4 to No.1 this week.
"Mamma Mia!" becomes the 38th Soundtrack to hit No.1 on the Australian charts since "The Sound of Music" became the first, and did so for 76 weeks between 1965 to 1967. The last Soundtrack at No.1 was the "High School Musical" album, which did so almost two years ago (31-July-2006). It also becomes the seventh soundtrack for this decade, having had previous chart toppers from "Coyote Ugly" (Jan 2001), "Moulin Rouge" (May 2001), "Bridget Jones' Diary" (Aug 2001), "8 Mile" (Jan 2003), "Shrek 2" (July 2004) and the aforementioned "High School Musical".
This is not the first time that an ABBA infused Soundtrack has hit the top. In September 1994 the "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" hit No.1 for 4 weeks, and also helped pull the ABBA Gold album back into the charts, and then two months later the "Muriel's Wedding" soundtrack reached No.19 which had more ABBA songs that Priscilla album.
This ABBA mania is the fourth time around for the giant re-entry at No.4, which is the former No.1 album "Abba Gold" (4 weeks, December 1992). Late 1992 was the first run for the album, then again in late 1994 with the above mentioned soundtracks, and then when the 'Mamma Mia!' stage musical hit in 1999 and 2000, not to mention every time an ABBA special is shown on TV it creates chart activity. ABBA also have two further albums in the Top 50 this week in "18 Hits" (No.43) and "Number Ones" (New at No.49).
The Vines' fourth album "Melodia" debuts at No.12 this week. Their first album "Highly Evolved" (No.5, July 2002) came out this week in 2002, and the next four years they had an album every two years with "Winning Days" (No.7, April 2004) and "Vision Valley" (No.14, April 2006).

no surprised to see katy perry at no.1 but not sure if it will hold on for next week or the week after black n gold may not be holding on for a long time since the rush is already at peak and being a few months old n may slowly slip yes good to see coldplay sarah b estelle n neyo all drop, need to make way for the newer songs will be interesting to see where madonna gabriella and brian chart next week, i think gab will just be outside top 10 madonna just in 20 n brian just outside 20 btw walking through all the music store couldnt see brian's single will it be released late on monday cuz its released by minor label? and do the single have CD1 & 2 as wikipedia claimed?
"Low" is due for a drop in the next few weeks. It seems to move no more than 3 places each week. A big drop is on it's way for this song, I can sense it.
Black & Gold jumps into the top 5, wow I didn't expect that. Good to see. Still in the I-tunes top 5 so should be able to hang around the top 10 for a few more weeks.
Coldplay are not having much luck, I hope their song doesn't leave the top 10 next week, it deserves another week or 2 in the top 10. Physical sales have hurt their singles.
I think physical sales will sting Metro Station too. They should secure a spot in the top 5 next week but will drop the week after and then they might rebound as the physical single will be released but I think the hype with them will be gone.
Katy Perry looks solid to secure the #1 spot for a few weeks still, nothing is really threatening her.

I also enjoyed the dancing, and "Untouched" could re-enter the Top 50 Singles Chart next week.
I wentto JbHifi today and got Brian Mc Fadden's single Twisted which was on display late in the afternoon around 4pm. The single has the Potbeeleez remix, which sounds better than the original album version.

Considering it is a big week for Physical Releases I have decided do predictions for outside the Top 20.
Top 30 Debut for: DON'T WANNA GO TO BED NOW Gabriella Cilmi (predict #23) ALL SUMMER LONG Kid Rock (if allowed by Warner predict #28)
Top 40 Debut for: GIVE IT 2 ME Madonna (predict #31) ELECTRIC FEEL MGMT (predict #39)
Top 50 entries for: TWISTED Brian McFadden (predict #42) DISTURBIA Rihanna (predict #50)
#1 Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl. #2 Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up. #3 Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air. #4 Metro Station - Shake It. #5 Miley Cyrus - See You Again. #6 Chris Brown - Forever. #7 Sam Sparro - Black & Gold. #8 Rihanna - Take A Bow. #9 Sara Bareilles - Love Song. #10 Ne-Yo - Closer.
NEW Entries... Top 50. Gabriella Cilmi - Don't Wanna Go To Bed Now. Madonna - Give It 2 Me. Brian McFadden - Twisted. MGMT - Electric Feel. Kid Rock - All Summer Long. Rihanna - Disturbia.
EXIT... Top 50. Mika - Big Girl (You Are Beautiful). Faker - This Heart Attack. Presets - My People. Kardinal Offishall & Akon - Dangerous. Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music. Colbie Caillat - Bubbly. Nelly & Fergie - Party People.
There were eight new entries inside the top 100 but outside the top 50 this week, they are...
#57 - MGMT - Electric Feel --> Oracular Spectacular is at it's highest position on the album charts this week #22. Breakthrough has been needed, twice both with Time To Pretend and Kids i said that radio had ignored them. Electric Feel will deliver their goods and tap into The Presets fanbase and other Australian dance acts alike. In turn MGMT will be one of the biggest acts in Australia for 2008.
#58 - Abba - Dancing Queen --> Has been listed as a re-entry in my predictions this week. I have no idea why ARIA has made it a new debut. It charted in 1992. Anyone have any information on this? would be helpful. Bullet into top 50 next week.
#64 - Abba - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) --> Mamma Mia Soundtrack scoots up four postions to take #1 on the album charts. Though Abba is showing great chart strength at the moment it will be hard to continue to have stamina with no less than three albums in the album top 50. Also newer music suits the time. All good things must come to an end.
#67 - Ladyhawke - Paris Is Burning --> Surprise debut to the top 100 is tops and great news. However alot of competition at the moment i wouldn't think it could compete.
#70 - Cast Of Mamma Mia! The Movie - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) --> Original Abba version tops this pitiful remake. Spotlight is on this at the moment. Chick flick is supporting it so will only survive as long as the box office is kind to he movie.
#84 - Cure - Sleep When I'm Dead --> Three physical singles later we land a not so high chart position. Will get lost somewhere below the top 100 next week. Album shall do rather well thanks to alot of promotion.
#99 - Gyroscope - Australia --> So-So, fluked a #1 album this year thanks to dedicated fans on a low selling week. This single is missing everything. Tryed to make an anthem instead it falls flat on the floor. Support good aussie talent! - not here. Gone next week.
#100 - Cee-Lo & Jack Black - Kung Fu Fighting --> Carl Douglas's version has stood the test of time. Bus Stop did an ok rendition in 1998. This is silly. Jack Black was last seen as part of the one-hit-wonder Tenacious D & Cee-Lo as one-hit-wonder Gnarls Barkley. So together they try to make magic for the kiddies. Should rise next week, not enough to bother the top 50.
so Brandon, does the twisted single only has 2 tracks? does it have 2 cd version releases as wikipedia claims? cant wait to get it, shame local is not stocking them....

I go away for a few weeks, come back and see the top ten has been taken over by what could be best described as ‘hyperactive pop’ –hello ‘I kissed a girl’, ‘When I grow up’ and ‘Shake it’. I think the volatility in the top ten will spill over into next week. Here are my predictions:

Hey last week we had a few people on-line during the chart show who were giving feedback. I thought this week why doesn't everybody log-on at 3pm and we'll comment and make noise about the charts. It's what we all enjoy listening to, and we know more about it than other people, so let's all sign at 3 on Sunday for some back-and-forth.
According to the tabulated predictions for the week, here's the chart might look this week...
1 (49.9) - I Kissed a Girl - Katy Perry 2 (48.5) - Shake it - Metro Station (had more No.2 predictions) 3 (48.5) - When I Grow Up - Pussycat Dolls 4 (46.5) - No Air - Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown 5 (46.0) - Black & Gold - Sam Sparro 6 (45.4) - See You Again - Miley Cyrus 7 (44.1) - Forever - Chris Brown 8 (42.9) - Take a Bow - Rihanna 9 (41.6) - Love Song - Sara Barielles 10 (41.0) - Viva la Vida - Coldplay 11 (39.1) - Kansas City - Sneaky Sound System 12 (38.8) - Don't Wanna Go to Be Now - Gabriella Cilmi 13 (38.1) - Closer - Ne-Yo 14 (37.4) - American Boy - Estelle 15 (35.2) - Perfect - Vanessa Amorosi 16 (35.0) - Sweet About Me - Gabriella Cilmi 17 (34.4) - If I Never See Your Face Again - Maroon 5 18 (33.8) - Are You With Me - Potbelleez 19 (33.6) - Elevator - Flo Rida 20 (33.2) - White Noise - Living End
When everybody logs on, please predict what you think will be the highest new entry out of the seven that enter the Top 40 this week. Choices are: Kid Rock Madonna Gabriella Cilmi Usher MGMT Rihanna Brian McFadden
Predictions, It's Not My Time- 3 Doors Down enter at No. 37, Gabriella Climi No.23, All Summer LongKid Rock No.26, Moving Mountains-Usher No.35, Give It 2 Me-Madonna No.34, Disturbia-Rihanna No.41, Twisted- Brian McFadden No.44
I noticed that the Single Version of "Don't Wanna Go to Bed Now" was only in iTunes Top 120 later on this week. Now it is the one charting higher than the album version. Looks like MGMT have finally got a breakthrough to the Top 50.
With the ABBA thing, their "More Abba Gold" makes it's highest peak on the charts this week at No.38. It had never been higher than No.56, which it achieved last week. Prior to that it had never been higher than No.60.
