The first official ARIA Chart Book is to be released in the first week of September, 2009, and covers the ARIA Singles charts from June 1988 through until December 2008 (Top 50 for 88 & 89, then a Top 100 from January 1990 onwards).
The book is set out in four parts, a chronological (date order) listing of all of the songs as they hit the charts, plus physical and download information from 2006 onwards. The second section (the main part) is all of the artists in alpha order with their songs listed below, featuring the songs highest positions, weeks in the Top 100, the Top 50 and the Top 10, along with Year End Rankings, exit date and record company information. Third part is all of the songs in alphabetical order, and part four features facts and figures, such as the No.1 songs, and chart feats by artists and for songs.
The book is only available from the publishers Moonlight Publications, who have previously released many music related books such as The Who's Who of Australian Rock, plus Gavin's previous five chart books (Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney). You can get an application form by emailing me, Gavin Ryan to get a copy sent to you along with a sample page from the book. The book is $60 (including Postage within Australia) My contact email is bulion@optusnet.com.au
There is also a link to the order form on the ARIA website:

There doesn't seem to be an order form or any info on the site about your new book, Bulion....can't wait to buy it, though!!! When does it ship? Congratulations! It sounds brilliant!!!!
It's easier to get the form from me at the moment, as the site is being updated and the form will be done next week (I thought they'd already done it). ARIA's site too will have a form next week, which is when the book is due for actual release.
I have emailed you both application forms for the book.
As September 1st is the official release date for the ARIA Singles Chart Book 1988 to 2008, I thought I'd start a few quiz questions related to the book. So here's Tuesdays:
Seven female acts dominate the Top 10 on the listing for "Accumulated Weeks in the Top 100". Put these in the order you think they belong/go...
Interesting question. With the longevity that goes with later hit singles, some of the younger artists could potentially be on top, but I'd still have to say that Kylie and Madonna are probably first and seconds due to a massive amount of hits over the whole 20 years.
1. Kylie Minogue 2. Madonna 3. Britney Spears 4. Pink 5. Mariah Carey 6. Rihanna 7. Janet Jackson
Hey Bulion, just wanting to know, whats the easiest way to get a copy of this ARIA Chart Book..? Will there be any in store copies..? Really looking forward to it........
And: 1. Madonna (as much as i dont like her, shes had way to many hits) 2. Kylie Minogue 3. Eminem 4. Britney Spears 5. P!nk 6. Mariah Carey 7. Christina Aguilera 8. U2 9. Bon Jovi
Put the seven following songs in order of "Most Weeks in the Top 100 without reaching the Top 50"
Time to Pretend - MGMT (HP-62) Desert Rose - Sting feat Cheb Mami (HP-67) One and One - Robert Miles (HP-56) Misery Business - Paramore (HP-65) Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol (HP-53) Everytime We Touch - Cascada (HP-61) Re-Rewind-The Crowd Say Bo Selecta - Artful Dodger (HP-62)
**hint, one of these song titles was mentioned in one of my Oz Chartifacts a couple of weeks ago as to it's placing in this list. Good luck today.
Hopefully I read the question right this time, silly me read Top 10 as Top 100. No wonder I bombed out so badly lol
1. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol 2. Time To Pretend - MGMT 3. Everytime We Touch - Cascada 4. Misery Business - Paramore 5. One And One - Robert Miles 6. Desert Rose - Sting featuring Cheb Mami 7. Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta - Artful Dodger
Is it sad that I'm finding these quizzes to be so much fun?
Edited: Cause I missed putting in One And One the first time Last edited:

Carta; The books came from the printers on Monday, and were shipped to the publishers, so they should arrive their on Thursday. So copies should be getting sent out by Friday for those that have ordered them. Expect a mid-week next week delivery.
Are you having trouble using the order form, or have you ordered it and are awaiting delivery?
Thanks, Bulion! The problem is with PayPal - they won't accept the publishers' email address as a valid PayPal account, so I had to contact them for their bank details. They've been away, which is why they haven't been in contact. I can only collect parcels once a week on a Saturday, so hopefully I'll have it by the 12th!
David Kent released a new book this week, too - what are the chances?! I should have his on Saturday.
All of the following songs were No.2 hits, but which songs spent six weeks, and which ones spent seven weeks as runner up hits to No.1. Hint: There are five songs with seven weeks at No.2 and five with six weeks. So guess which are which:
A Groovy Kind of Love - Phil Collins We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel Let's Groove- CDB The Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani Always - Bon Jovi Strawberry Kisses - Nikki Webster Don't Call Me Baby - Madison Avenue Missing - Everything But the Girl That Don't Impress Me Mush - Shania Twain Bedroom Eyes - Kate Ceberano
Woo! Pumped with my first win LOL. OK Let's go with today's challenge
6 weeks The Sweet Escape A Groovy Kind Of Love Missing Don't Call Me Baby Let's Groove
7 weeks Strawberry Kisses Always That Don't Impress Me Much We Didn't Start The Fire Bedroom Eyes
Out of all these I'm glad that only 2 (A Groovy Kind Of Love & The Sweet Escape) never got to #1. The rest do send me back with memories of the time of their release. Doesn't mean I like them all, but to me they would have at least been memorable number ones.
A Groovy Kind of Love - Phil Collins We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel Let's Groove- CDB Strawberry Kisses - Nikki Webster Bedroom Eyes - Kate Ceberano
7 Weeks
Always - Bon Jovi Don't Call Me Baby - Madison Avenue Missing - Everything But the Girl That Don't Impress Me Mush - Shania Twain The Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani
6 Weeks at #2 BEDROOM EYES Kate Ceberano DONT CALL ME BABY Madison Avenue MISSING Everything but the Girl SWEET ESCAPE Gwen Stéfani LETS GROOVE CDB
7 weeks at #2 A GROOVY KIND OF LOVE Phil Collins STRAWBERRY KISSES Nikki Webster ALWAYS Bon Jovi THAT DONT IMPRESS ME MUCH Shania Twain WE DIDNT START THE FIRE Billy Joel
Just remember of those songs were at No.2 during the Xmas/ NY's period, and this site does not show the "held-over" charts, so you need to add the extra weeks in.
Does your chartbook count the hold over charts for total weeks spent on the charts bulion?
@392414, this may come across as rude but it's not meant to and I mean no offence just curious, how old are you and do you not live in Australia to only recognise 1 song from that list.?
6 weeks at #2: The Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani Let's Groove - CDB Don't Call Me Baby - Madison Avenue Missing - Everything But The Girl We Didn't Start The Fire - Billy Joel
7 weeks at #2: Strawberry Kisses - Nikki Webster Always - Bon Jovi (until recently, I misremembered this making it to #1 for a week.) That Don't Impress Me Much - Shania Twain A Groovy Kind Of Love - Phil Collins Bedroom Eyes - Kate Ceberano
@bluezombie. I'm pretty sure that Bon Jovi's Always managed 1 week at #1 on the AMR charts. I recall seeing it at #1 on Video Hits when they were still using AMR for their charts.
Seven Weeks: A Groovy Kind of Love We Didn't Start the Fire Always That Don't Impress Me Much Strawberry Kisses
Six Weeks: Bedroom Eyes Let's Groove Missing Don't Call Me Baby The Sweet Escape

Saturday's question: The following songs all stayed for a long period in the Top 100, but none reached the Top 10. Place the below songs in order of "Most Weeks in Top 100 without Reaching the Top 10".

everybody got the first one right, but BlueZombie got the most right with three in the correct place. congrats BZ
And here's the final question taken from the ARIA Singles Chart Book 1988-2008. Guess at how long all of these songs stayed in the Top 100 (clue; they're all the same), just guess the amount of weeks spent on the charts.
Hips Don't Lie - Shakira (HP-01) Grace Kelly - Mika (HP-02) Maneater - Nelly Furtado (HP-03) 20 Good Reasons - Thirsty Merc (HP-04) Kiss Kiss - Chris Brown (HP-08)
first in will win for the correct guess with this one. So if Carta wants to change (or you do 392414), then go ahead, but whoever says the right one first get it.
392414 - I was kidding (hence the wink!!!). I'm sorry for offending you. As a teacher, I feel an irresistible urge to correct errors when I see them! Again, I'm sorry.
I wasn't copying your answer, either - I opened the topic, went off and did some research, came back and posted my answer to find that in the meantime, you had posted the same one. Should I change my (researched) answer just because you guessed the same one 15 minutes before me?
I'm not the slightest bit interested in winning, bulion, so if 49 is the correct answer, 392414 guessed correctly first and wins.
The answer to yesterday's question was 49 weeks for all of the tracks. So I'll give it to both 392414 and Carta.
That's all the questions for now. The book started being mailed out over the weekend, so those that have ordered them should get them this week. Let me know what you think when you get them.
Still waiting for my copy I can only collect parcels on Saturdays, so it's going to be another week for me, now....! I'm sure it will be worth the wait, though
Picked up my copy from the Post Office late yesterday afternoon and have not put it down. It's an absolutely fantastic book bulion. You've done chart stats freaks like myself proud. I can only imagine the number of hours you must have out into the project but I can tell you that it was definitely worth it and appreciated by me. It's really nice to have the official ARIA stats for all charting singles since 1988 so easy to access. I will definitely will be purchasing the Album book when that comes out next year. You should hold your head up proud over this mammoth effort. Thank you!
Bulion - Is the book currently available to buy from outside the UK? I brought several of David Kent's books a few years back and even though all of those weren't all official,I thoroughly enjoyed the books. Is it possible? as i wouldn't mind paying the overseas postage?
simonf, you can contact my publisher direct to find out the overseas exchange rate, their email address is on the order form which you can easily download from the ariacharts.com website. Alternately, www.timewarp.com.au is a Sydney based online music distributor, who also sells music books. They are about to get the new title, and they deal with overseas sales as well.
BillyBrett, thanks for the praise, I am always a little worried before people start to get the books that I might have made a mistake, or something, but this time I felt like it all went well apart from a few postal hick-ups. So thankyou for the praise once again
I've finally got my copy!! It's great, bulion!!! Well done!!! Can't wait for the album version!!
A quick question - did ARIA not give you permission to print Year End charts in full? I'm guessing so. Also, did you get the certification data from old ARIA reports? They're a great inclusion!!
Carta; I did not need/want to print the EOY Charts, as they are permanently on their website, and I didn't feel the need to put them in. And the certifications also came from the ARIA site, as they are all listed their.
Thanks for the thanks also, it's great to please a fellow chartafile (careful how you say that!!)
I got the pre-1997 accreditations from this site now that I remember. Nateboi has done a great job of listing them all on this site, and I also cross-referenced them with the reports.
I am addicted to this chart book builon. Which is a good thing as it is stopping me from watching pointless TV shows. I know use it to fill in time. I can only imagine what's going to happen when the Album book is published next year.
I'm really enjoying discovering the country of origin of some acts, I've oftened had to guess where they were from since I started compiling my ARIA Chart database before the 'invention' of the net so all I had to rely on was print articles, and at the time that meant Smash Hits or TV Hits.
And it is wonderful to have the accreditation of the hits especially for the era 1988-1991, as I only discovered that you could get the ARIA charts on paper in April 1992.
And I've filed away in my brain the pointless bit of trivia that Positions 89,83,71, are the only positions that haven't had an entry peak there for more than 1 week.
BillyB, glad you're getting so much enjoyment out of it. I still look through and notice things too, even though I worked on it for two years or so. You might notice that I am updating this database with the ARIA Top 50 information between June 1983 and June 1988, so that way there will be wider ARIA data.
Yeah I was also surprised that those three positions, 71, 83 and 89 did not have multiple weeks at them. So now you know how I can make statements about what songs have spent the most at peak positions. Look out in the weeks coming chartifacts for a current song that is one week away and so close to breaking a 16 year old record for most-weeks-at-peak.
I've just ordered the book through the Oz Music Books website. This will save me from requesting 100+ more singles' peak positions as I continue to convert my music collection from AMR to ARIA stats.
Thanks for your help before bulion. I look forward to reading your book!
Got my copy this arvo and have spent ages reading it already What a great book and thanks to bulion who has spent so much time and effort to put it all together
On another note, if I notice any spelling errors/typos would you like me to mention them or not worry about it? (Because I have)
Thanks to BillyBrett, he's found two small mistakes in the book so far, but if you do come across anymore, please do let me know, as they can be fixed for future re-prints.
Nicole Kidman has a mistake under her listing, the other is grammatical in the Legend section (so nothing too major there).
Enjoy the read AmerieFan. , onya knowlesy Last edited:
Found a mistake in the book. In the "Song Titles" section there's no page 198. None of the listing is missing thankfully. Just looks like your page numbering system simply skipped a page number. hehe
It's about 70% finished, but I am also trying to do an update for the singles book, to be released simultaneously, as the album book should/could have cross-referencing with the singles book.
So I am looking at having it next year to be a 1988 to 2010 editions.
I am putting together the ARIA Album & DVD Chart Book at the moment, and wanted to get people's opinion on layout for the albums and singles.
Below are two samples of how I want to lay things out, tell me which one you like better, or maybe even suggest another version.

At the moment I have them set out in chronological order, so everything is mixed in together. Albums are in CAPITOL's, whilst the DVD's are in lower case.
Let me know which you think looks better, as this will shape the look of the content in the book itself.
I prefer the seperate listings. For me it helps me find the info I need quicker and also filters out the unnecessary info. By this I mean if I just want details on the albums, I don't have to filter out the DVD info. Or if I want the DVD info I can just skip all the albums, without having to look at the codes. The first option at a glance would make it seem like Linkin Park has hada lot of entries on the album chart.
I like the codes as sometimes it is hard to know if a package is a best of or not, a remix or even a live album.
Thanks for valuing our input, I know I value the effort you are putting into this project.
I agree with BillyBrett and the others, I prefer the separate listings. Like BB said, if I wanted to reference an album, it would easily filter out the unnecessary DVD info (or vice versa).
During May I will start putting the new updated ARIA Chart Book together, which this time will also contain album (88 to 2010) and Music DVD (2001 onwards) info along with the updated singles for 2009 and 2010.
At the moment the book is laid out like this...

There are a couple of NEW features I have added to the new edition...
Wks 2 Peak = Weeks to Peak (how many weeks did it take for the song to climb to it's highest position) Tally = Eacgh T100/T50/T10 re-entry now has a running Tally of it's overall weeks in those respective areas.
So what my question is now for the new edition is would you like to see the book laid out differently from the first edition.

or would you like to suggest how it would be easier to read. Nothing is set in stone just yet, but as chart book readers I would like your opinion on the easiest and best way to lay this book out.
So your layout shows all entries of the same song under the initial entry, followed by re-entries, whilst I currently have them in total chronological order now.
Looking at DaveNT's scenario and hearing how you have thought about presenting yours, I would side with DaveNT's presentation of keeping the songs information all under the one entry.
BUT I kinda understand your thinking bulion, your way would be good to show something like the Michael Jackson incident where you would clearly see that Black Or White re-entered over 10 years after it's initial chart run. Something that DaveNT's wouldn't really clearly show.
So I'm kinda torn between the two options. I personally don't care about Top 20 placing. I find Top 10, 50 and 100 useful enough.
I didn't see your first book bulion so the above layout is just my impartial view of how I'd have imagined the layout. You're right BillyBrett, it is a choice of either the 'by release' or 'chronological' layout. Particularly with long-running albums, I'd prefer the 'by release' layout, which groups the many chart runs together per album. As so many songs re-enter the lower reaches of the Top 100 these days, it may be annoying to have all the re-entry runs listed separately (and space consuming). I'm not sure if that was bulion's intention? Maybe another idea is to merge re-entry chart runs onto one line per calendar year? Really not sure, just throwing ideas out there. But I'm looking forward to the book, especially now that album data will be added
The above four links are samples of layouts for the new ARIA Chart Book, which I am close to finalizing. I would like to get your feed back on which layout looks best. Two versions are the same, the only difference is grid lines have been added.
Just answer #1, #2, #3 or #4 to which looks best. These have also been posted on my Facebook page here:
#4 for me, but yeah, no gridlines...my #1 looks like the other two, #4 is the only one with all the weekly information to the right of the song.
Bit too late for this, but not a fan of each re-entry listed chronologically, should be under the main entry. Too messy and hard to keep track of exactly how many albums in total charted. But otherwise, everything looks good.
**HELP NEEDED**: I found out that I can't use the name ARIA in the title of my new Chart Book, otherwise I have to pay a large licensing fee (I can use the name in the bi-line, which will read "Information from the ARIA Top 100 Singles and Albums Charts"). The book will have the Singles & Albums from 88 to 2010, plus the T40 Music DVD from 2001, so I need a new name for the upcoming book. I can't use 'Australian Chart Book', as that belongs to David Kent, so any suggestions on a new title? This was also posted on my facebook page, so suggestions can be given their too.

By the way bulion, I've got the year-end ARIA top 100 singles chart for 1989. Do you have this? I noticed that positions between 51-100 were missing from your 2008 chart book. Last edited:
Nugs, email me at bulion@iinet.net.au with that Top 100, as I just noticed it's not in there, only the Top 50. Do it soon, as I go to the printers next week.
There are three days in 2024 where the number 12345 appear in the dates, one has already occurred on 15/3/24, and another will occur tomorrow on 13/5/24, so I am preparing to announce a new compile I have been working on for that date, with the final 12345 dated day seeing the release of that work.
I have compiled all of my previous chart books into one giant spreadsheet, which is the first ever fully linked chart-work, containing links to the songs, B-sides and artists, so if you haven't heard the song or don't know anything about the act, you can just click on the title or act, and it will take to the linked in website.
At the moment I am looking for people to email me with an expression of interest in getting this new work from me, and then I will do a mass email with samples and how you can get this from me later in the week, with the compile being sent out via a USB at the end of May on the third date for 2024 with 12345 in it (31/5/24).
So, for now, just email me at gavinjryan28@gmail.com and I will gather together everybody interested in my new project.
Samples and purchasing details were sent out today, if you're still interested in finding out about this new work I've done, contact me at the email in the previous message above.
