Forum - Other Charts: Australia - Non ARIA - Triple J Hottest 100 2016 - voting + predictions

Hi everyone! It's the silly season again, and predictions are being churned out far and wide. Perhaps the most difficult h100 to predict in 7 years.

Here is my top 10 prediction:

1. Never Be Like You (ft. Kai) - FLUME
2. Starboy (ft. Daft Punk) - THE WEEKND
3. Papercuts (ft. Vera Blue) - ILLY
4. Say It (ft. Tove Lo) - FLUME
5. Panda - DESIIGNER
6. One Dance (ft. Wizkid & Kyla Reid) - DRAKE
7. 1955 (ft. Montaigne & Tom Thum) - HILLTOP HOODS
8. Final Song - MØ
9. Alarm - ANNE-MARIE
10. Catch 22 (ft. Anne-Marie) - ILLY

Please don't judge - as I have absolutely NO CLUE on this one. Looking forward to everyone else's theories!

Pretty solid!

I would say that 1955 would definitely be in there, probably over Alarm, and that Panda might be a bit iffy too.

Other chances would include:

The xx - On Hold;
Nick Murphy - Stop Me;
Maggie Rogers - Alaska;
Peking Duk - Stranger;
Tash Sultana - Jungle.

There's also things that I think would make top 30, but not top 10:

Mura Masa - Love$ick;
Empire Of The Sun - High And Low;
D.D. Sumbo - Walrus;
Amy Shark - Adore;
Glass Animals - Youth.
In the world of laughable timing, Flume is doing Like A Version this week...on December 1st I'm starting to think he could have 6 entries though, with Numb & Getting Colder getting some good airplay currently, and Heater also selling well. There have been a fair few contenders arising since I last made a prediction
LOL do you think he'll sing?
I think Flume's chances of being #1 and that #1 being a stand out are higher than previous years contenders when it could have gone more than one way and more often than not the favourite to be #1 missed out.

He has a few things that work in his favour compared to other songs.

This year doesn't seem to be too strong a year and no where near as solid as last year where there was already over 100 songs predicted to make the Hottest 100.

My predicted top 10 goes like this:

1. Never Be Like You - Flume (with ARIA awards fame/success and national tour before and at the time voting opens, I don't see him losing. Add that he is an Aussie he will get support because many voters like to support local talent)
2. Papercuts - Illy
3. 1955 - Hilltop Hoods
4. Starboy - The Weeknd/Daft Punk
5. Say It - Flume
6. Gold - Kiiara (I didn't think this would do so well but seeing it still in the top 100 means it should have some support. Added bonus is that she has only had one follow up which has been a much weaker release)
7. Final SOng - M0
8. The Opposite Of Us - Big Scary
9. Satan - DD Dumbo
10. Life Itself - Glass Animals

Will be interesting to see if Sia has any eligible tracks because she could possibly do well too.

Usually 90s bands flop these days but I think Radiohead has a good chance of making the top 100.

Broods & Grouplove should do reasonably well too however multiple follow ups could see them fair lower.

I didn't think Alarm was played on JJJ? I don't remember seeing it in the weekly Hit List.
2016's Chandelier, perhaps.
Anne-Marie's Alarm was on the Hit List for 13 weeks.
I feel like Alarm SHOULDN'T be played on triple j, it just feels too in line with stuff that rightly gets passed over and doesn't have anything off kilter as an electropop single in the way Do It Right does. So in that regard I'm curious how it goes. Sure it's popular, but will people put it in their top 10s? Time will tell.

Flume does continue to look a smokey. Chet Faker has recently proven that having multiple big hits is no deterrent to the #1 position, though I think Flume will have his extras sprinkled a bit lower down the count, with the exception of Say It of course.
Yeah, NBLY/Say It definitely feels like a Talk Is Cheap/Gold double. Maybe Heater will be the surprise 1998, but I don't think his album has 3 top 10s in it.

Also seems like there will be a bigger Unearthed representation this year.
Perhaps unsurprising, it's hard to think of many Australian artists who have broken through in the last 5 years without Unearthed, I can think of Chet Faker, Jarryd James and...I'm beat

Watch all my Unearthed faves turn up in the 101-200 section
Altiyan Childs 4 #1. Let's take back H100 from Unearthed types
I'd be happy with Flume at #1 even if Never Be Like You is not as strong as past efforts from Flume. I too would be amazed if he wasn't #1 at this point. Of the other songs listed so far I'm most excited for Alaska, Final Song and Starboy to do well, it would be great if at least one if not more were top 10.

I don't know for sure what has gotten JJJ play this year or will be on the voting list but I reckon all these will be amongst the songs in contention for a spot in my 10:

Alaska - Maggie Rogers
Because I Love You - Montaigne
Been Here Before - Indian Summer featuring Eloise Cleary
Checkmate - Bag Raiders featuring Benjamin Joseph
Final Song - MØ
Fool For You - Kilter
Free To Love - Brendan Maclean
Fuck With Myself - Banks
Gemini Feed - Banks
Generationwhy - Zhu???
Get Money! - E^ST featuring Mallrat
Love Like This - Indian Summer featuring Lastlings
Make It Up - Shura
No One Knows Me Better - GRMM featuring Sleep Steady & Thandi Phoenix
Power - Harts
Rocketfuel - Thomston???
Secrets - Dugong Jr. featuring Taskha???
Shelter - Porter Robinson & Madeon
Show U Off - Chairlift???
Spoon Me - Elliphant featuring Skrillex???
Subways - The Avalanches
Starboy - The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk
Tell Me Where The Lovers Have Gone - Thandi Phoenix
Till It Kills Me - Montaigne
Together, Locked Safely - SAFIA (won't do as well as Make Them Wheels Roll, Over You or My Love Is Gone though )
Unique (Louis Futon Remix) - GoldLink featuring Anderson .Paak???
What's It Gonna Be? - Shura

I'd say Genghis Kahn would be in the mix for top 10 as well, will definitely be one of the highest non-commercially played songs of the year!
It's that glorious time of year again

Having been on community radio for the last few months I've been exposed to a lot of emerging Australian music, so I will have my vote heavily swayed towards Aussie acts this year.
I have a streak to maintain, in the six years I have voted, one of my votes has been for the #1. Alas last year's #1 was underwhelming TBH.

Would love to see Flume go #1 with Never Be Like You, that song is gorgeous. But it's bloody hard this year! May pick a few recently Unearthed acts (but not holding out great expectations they will poll but you never know)

Might pressure my brother into voting for the Hottest 100, he's been listening to a lot of Triple J this year.

OMG Clinton! JJJ Unearthed is a corrupt elite institution!!! We need to end the corruption!
Unearthed bribed Wells into giving Nathan good grades. The money was going to help the handicapped students, how's that for your conscience??!
I don't usually do early predictions, but I want to do one for fun this year...

1. Flume - Never Be Like You (feat. Kai)
2. Illy - Papercuts (feat. Vera Blue)
3. Hilltop Hoods - 1955 (feat. Montaigne & Tom Thum)
4. Flume - Say It (feat. Tove Lo)
5. Amy Shark - Adore
6. The Weeknd - Starboy (feat. Draft Punk)
7. Illy - Catch 22 (feat. Anne Marie)
8. Peking Duk - Stranger (feat. Elliphant)
9. Big Scary - The Opposite of Us
10. Kid Cudi - Surfin' (feat. Pharrell Williams)
11. Desiigner - Panda
12. Kiiara - Gold
13. Tash Sultana - Jungle
14. The Avalanches - Frankie Sinatra
15. Nick Murphy - Stop Me
16. Drake - One Dance (feat. Kyla & WizKid)
17. Montaigne - Because I Love You
18. The Avalanches - Subways
19. Broods - Free
20. MØ - Final Song

It will be quite interesting to see how high 'January 26' will reach considering the love/hate relationship listeners are having with the track.
Not seeing a lot of love for LAV this year - what do people think of this year's efforts? I'm particularly a fan of "Pedestrians Are Rotting My Brain" by Hey Geronimo - but I'm dreaming if that even gets a vote.
I'd love to see A.B. Original's from last week get in. It'd sound so sweet to have Briggs' 'the date's changing' heard all over the country on Australia Day. Also more Paul Kelly in general is always a good thing.
People are loving DMAs cover of Believe, I reckon that'll definitely be the highest LAV and might even get to top 30ish. Paces' could go alright as well and who even knows what Halsey's will do.
Last edited:
DMA's Believe was absolutely sublime! Exactly what LAV's should be like - take a song that's completely out of kilter with the band's style - flip it on its head and make it completely your own. First time I've heard that happen in ages!
The Justin Bieber cover could be in with a chance to make the hottest 100 just because he has been huge this past year.
Also Guy Sebastian could make a surprise appearance!
Album poll time: http://www2b.abc.net.au/votecentral/Client/Login.aspx?E=65

I put in

A Tribe Called Quest - We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service
Avalanches, The - Wildflower
BabyMetal - Metal Resistance
Beyonce - Lemonade
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
David Bowie - Blackstar
Frank Ocean - Blonde
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity
Olympia - Self Talk
Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
I see Sia is on the albums shortlist, I guess this means we can expect her on the H100 shortlist as well
Maybe but they are a bit more flexible with the albums shortlist I think. Not sure what they'd put down for her though, surely not Cheap Thrills or The Greatest
Mine would be

1. Flume - Never Be Like You
2. The Weeknd - Starboy
3. Illy - Papercuts
4. Flume - Say It
5. Hilltop Hoods - 1955
6. Sia - Cheap Thrills (Most likely to be the original)
7. Drake - One Dance
8. Illy - Catch 22
9. Peking Duk - Stranger
10. Kanye West - Famous (Triple J loves Kanye)

I wouldn't be surprised if The Chainsmokers would make an appearance with Closer, Halsey had a good year last year with Hottest 100 entries so it could happen.

There's no thread for it so nowhere really I guess one could be made if enough people were interested in predicting the EOY
This will be my prediction for right now.

Seeing that Drake is a contender for the Aria ye #1 then I see his song doing well too and a possible top 5 contender on the hottest 100.

I underestimated it originally.
Yeah for sure, your more commercial-centred radio listeners would have a high chance of voting for it.

Good to see Flume get a couple of Grammy noms. More attention for the guy. I guess he could falter as people might assume he is a definite #1 and not vote for him for that reason.

Good to see Sofie Tucker get a grammy nom too. With her recent inclusion on a Maccas ad her chances of making the hottest 100 have increased too. Asked me a few weeks ago I would have said no I don't see Drinkee making it but now I think her chances are pretty strong.
Looks like voting starts next Monday

That seems early doesn't it?
From memory it kicked off on the 10th last year, so it is actually later.
Maybe because of all the presenters leaving, they're pushing everything back a bit and starting summer programming later than usual. I heard my first 'hey remember this song' promo today.

This looks to be a strong contender for the hottest 100 out of all the LAV's.
Hopefully that's just because international artists always drive up view counts on their LAVs, particularly when they've got a huge cult following. I'd rather listen to Hecate or Phunk Junkeez than that dreck.
I think the DMAs will be the highest of the LAVs for this year. Also Paces could do well, as it will attract people who want to vote for Guy Sebastian
I can see that happening too. In a way fair play because it was a solid cover and Guy did well on it, I'm just not looking forward to the thinkpieces

Also for consideration, if you check the tumblr tag for Like A Version, it's Cub Sport's version that keeps coming up long after it aired so that's a potential one too. It's also pretty high up on the tracklisting for the Like A Version CD.

DMA's cover was good. DMA's usually do well so I reckon they will be strong too.
Ok no Sia on the shortlist so you can rule her out for this year. Nor is Kiiara's Gold, so they have put it into 2015 where it belongs.

Here's the voting list PDF if anyone's after it: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100/16/downloads/how-to-vote/Hottest_100_2016_Artist_A-Z.pdf

Sad for "Gold" being one of my favourites, but fair enough. On the other hand, Anne-Marie's "Do It Right" also came out in Oct/Nov 2015

Edit: "Drinkee" too, around October 2015 on Spotify/iTunes (though they replaced it in 2016), and May 2015 on Soundcloud
Last edited:
well, my vote is the strongest yet by a LONG way, I happen to have 6 former(/current) number 1s from my chart on the list, plus 3 more that would have made it since I stopped making it. I don't think think any more than probably 4 will make the actual Hottest 100, but it's nice to have songs I love so much on the list
I had to manually add 3 of my votes to the list.... THREE!
That sucks about Gold because that would have done well. Hopefully it will still manage the votes as it was a massive song on JJJ and was smashed to death during the summer months. I will still vote for it.

It was never on the 2015 voting list either.
It thought Gold was on 2015 which is why it's not here now? I vaguely remember seeing it?

Even with me being much less involved with popular music this year, this is probably my hardest ever vote too!
They definitely left Gold off last year, though it still ended up top 400 on my count purely from write-ins.

I'm kind of sad that Julien Baker is ineligible, "Something" is inspired and didn't remotely have a chance last year. I guess more room for my favourites though!
Also I'll be the first person to post their votes? This never happens

Ali Barter - Far Away
Danny Brown - When It Rain
Gretta Ray - Drive
Highasakite - Someone Who'll Get It
Kanye West - Ultralight Beam
M83 - Go!
Maggie Rogers - Dog Years
Middle Kids - Edge Of Town
Radiohead - Daydreaming

10th year of voting, all artists I've never voted before ^.^

Also counting votes and tweeting incessantly about the Hottest 100 @ LOOFRunDry, send curiosities that way
If I didn't have such a busy morning, then I would have posted before you

Amy Shark - Adore
Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me
Beyoncé - Sorry
Danny Brown - When It Rain
Frank Ocean - Solo
Kamaiyah - How Does It Feel
Kaytranada - Lite Spots
Ngaiire - Diggin
Shura - What's It Gonna Be?
Solange - Cranes in the Sky

a-c albums votes updated:

4 - Lemonade
3 - Nonagon Infinity, Metal Resistance, Wildflower
2 - Atrocity Exhibition, Blond/e, 99.9%, We got it from Here..., The Life Of Pablo, A Moon Shaped Pool, Blackstar, Konnichiwa
This is the results of my mathematical prediction model as of day 1 of voting. As not everyone votes on Day 1, I'll allow the model to continue to create a final prediction after the last day of voting. The 2016 Album Poll results will also change the predictions. I've left out Like A Versions as there is no solid way to gauge their popularity.

My shorlist was on 9 songs and that includes Gold.

I have 5 maybes and the 10th spot will go to the weakest of the 5 songs according to Hijinx's post! (Happy to hear you're doing this again).
haha, don't let me discourage you from voting what you like
I would rather give my vote to the song that looks like it needs it.

I care more that a song makes the hottest 100 than where it ranks so songs like Papercuts and Never Be Like You and Starboy which I love will miss on my votes because I am certain they will make the countdown.
Yeah, and considering they're #1 contenders against each other, it might be counterproductive.
Drake - Summer Sixteen
Drake - Too Good {Ft. Rihanna}
Hilltop Hoods - Higher {Ft. James Chatburn}
Hilltop Hoods - 1955 {Ft. Montaigne/Tom Thum}
Illy - Papercuts {Ft. Vera Blue}
Kings Of Leon - Waste A Moment
Miike Snow - Genghis Khan
MØ - Final Song
SAFIA - Make Them Wheels Roll
Temper Trap, The - Fall Together
I'm still unsure of what my exact vote will be so I've decided to leave voting until I come back from Melbourne next week. But already I can see that jinx and I will have one artist (Maggie Rogers, but it'll be for Alaska) in common, while I know I'm definitely voting What's It Gonna Be? from Clinton's list. There's a few in Tennis' shortlist that I'm considering and I'm considering Final Song from Chris A's list. I'm interested to see which member's vote I have the most in common with.
My votes

Jagwar Ma - O B 1
DMA's - Believe {triple j Like A Version 2016}
Radiohead - Daydreaming
Dustin Tebbutt - First Light
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Gamma Knife
Lapsley - Cliff
Ben Wright Smith - Sand Grabber
DIIV - Is The Is Are
Thee Oh Sees - Dead Man's Gun
Hilltop Hoods, DMA's, Illy and Amity Affliction are always underestimated with the Hottest 100. They always fair better than predicted. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a good 4 songs from each of these artists on the day. They all appear to have a strong fan base even though most of their songs are hardly the most popular.
I had a shortlist of 14 songs which were the only ones I charted. These ten got the votes:

Big Scary - The Opposite Of Us
Birds Of Tokyo - Brace
British India - I Thought We Knew Each Other
Catfish And The Bottlemen - Soundcheck
Dean Lewis - Waves
Gretta Ray - Drive
Jarryd James - 1000x {Ft. Broods}
Kings Of Leon - Waste A Moment
Temper Trap, The - Fall Together
Vance Joy - Straight Into Your Arms
okay, I decided on my final choice, here are my votes:

Client Liaison - World Of Our Love
Danny L Harle - Broken Flowers
Hilltop Hoods - 1955
Mikhael Paskalev - Witness
Milky Chance - Cocoon
Montaigne - Because I Love You
Tegan and Sara - Boyfriend
Teleman - Dusseldorf
The Weeknd - Starboy
Yeasayer - Silly Me
many difficult, much wow

Angel Olsen - Shut Up Kiss Me
Avalanches, The - Frankie Sinatra
Crystal Castles - Char
Danny Brown - Really Doe {Ft. Kendrick Lamar/Ab-Soul/Earl Sweatshirt}
David Bowie - Blackstar
Glass Animals - Life Itself
Last Shadow Puppets, The - Miracle Aligner
Radiohead - Burn The Witch
Teleman - Dusseldorf
Temples - Certainty
Finally decided who & what I'm voting for

AlunaGeorge - Not Above Love
AlunaGeorge - Mean What I Mean
Client Liaison - Off White Limousine
David Bowie - Lazarus
Flume - Never Be Like You
Sofi Tukker - Drinkee
Sofi Tukker - Awoo
The Weeknd - Starboy
Tkay Maidza - Simulation
Vera Blue - Fingertips
After looking at last years Triple J thread I am even more confused as to why Gold has been left off this years voting list and wonder if it was an over sight in the fact it was potentially released earlier in 2015 but if that was the case Stolen Dance should haven't have been included in 2014 as it was released in 2013.

Gold was new to the hitlist at the end of December yet Marcus Marr & Chet Faker had a new to hit list mid December and it is included in the voting list for the Hottest 100.

From memory a few songs like Florence and David Bowie didn't even make the hit list through out the year yet they appear in the voting list.

Gold reached #4 on the hit list in the first week of February and was still top 10 the following week which shows it was heavily played. The fact it was omitted from both 2015 and 2016 voting lists is incorrect on Triple J's part.
For what it's worth, they did play it a decent amount prior to playlisting http://www.last.fm/user/triplejradio/library/music/kiiara/_/Gold?from=2015-01-01&rangetype=year Obviously should have been on there last year, not the first, not the last I assume

I still take more exception to "Something", which got its first play on triple j on NOVEMBER 30TH at 11PM
your Twitter vote counting is that from both Twitter and Instagram votes and hashtags?

Considering Amy SHark didn't have much mainstream attention I am surprised to see her song very popular. Nice song though. She might stop Hilltop Hoods getting their usual #3 position.

I still reckon it will go Flume, Illy and Hilltop Hoods for the top 3. Amy might come in at #4 as the other three had mainstream success that might work in their favours.
Solely from instagram, just like last year
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first year Beyonce has made the shortlist as a lead performer? Reminds me of when Kylie and Madonna were considered to have enough indie-credibility to make the countdown a few times in the 90s...

Funny that it's the same year that Sia hasn't made it on the shortlist, too...
Not sure how much proper airplay it's getting but I have heard Adore heaps on mainstream hit radio over the past month which originally led me to believe it was Miley Cyrus/Zara Larrson/someone not Amy.
Almost benny, but she actually got played once before on triple j, Work It Out all the way back in 2002 https://web.archive.org/web/20030116095026/http://triplej.abc.net.au/hottest100/printlist.htm
had a shortlist of 20 songs, perhaps my lowest ever, but fortunately i liked most of them a lot more than in recent years. 8 of these were #1's on my chart this year, the 9th was in my top 50 of 2015, and I gave the 10th to a LAV that did a good job covering regurgitator.

Blood Orange - Best To You {Ft. Empress Of}
Bon Iver - 22 (OVER S∞∞N) [Bob Moose Extended Cab Version]
Crystal Fighters - All Night
Empire Of The Sun - To Her Door
Frank Ocean - Self Control
Hey Geronimo - Happiness At Best {triple j Like A Version 2016}
Mumford & Sons - There Will Be Time {Ft. Baaba Maal}
MØ - Final Song
Pnau - Chameleon
Philadelphia Grand Jury - Spend More Time
My Hottest 100 votes:

Hard Aches, The - Glad That You're Gone
Urthboy - Daughter Of The Light {Ft. Kira Puru}
Jezabels, The - Pleasure Drive
Big Scary - The Opposite Of Us
Baauer - Day Ones {Ft. Novelist/Leikeli47}
Martin Solveig - Do It Right {Ft. Tkay Maidza}
Stonefield - Stranger
Sticky Fingers - Outcast At Last
Skepta - Man
Montaigne - Because I Love You
My son's Hottest 100 votes:
L-FRESH The LION - 1 In 100,000
Harts - Peculiar
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - People-Vultures
Birds Of Tokyo - Harlequins
Pnau - Chameleon
Cat Empire, The - Bulls
Royal Blood - Where Are You Now?
Creases, The - Impact
Violent Soho - Viceroy
For some songs I find rather ordinary some bands really have a strong fan base to have so many of their hits in the top 100 with voting so far (based on Hijinx's Twitter updates)

Surpised Violent Soho currently have 5 songs within the top 100. I will admit that I find them quite over-rated.

Amity Affliction, DMA's, Camp Cope and Catfish and the Bottles (never really heard of this band) all have 3.

Also surprised to see Hellions, King Glizzard, Childish Gambino, DZ Deathrays and Dune Rats all doing particularly well with not just one song but two!

I am happy to see Luca Brasi do well. I thought he might miss the countdown.

All these artists alone and if you add Flume, Illy, Glass Animals, Safia, Sticky Fingers, Tash Sultana and DD Dumbo make up over 50% of the top 100.

I've been doing a Hijinx style vote count for each of the H100's since 2009. A lot of the artists you mentioned K8 (and those same genres) are always over-estimated by the count. The fan base of these acts must also align well with people who like to publicly post their votes.
I haven't got 2015's data with me right now but this an example of some of the other acts over-estimation:
YearH100 # Song Artist My Vote Count #

What's funny is I'm pretty sure Trophy Eyes are being overestimated but you can barely tell them apart from Amity. Chlorine is a bit better than the Amity songs this year though.
Could be an Amity specific thing that I just attributed to all Hardcore acts (my knowledge in this genre is limited). I just took a look at Bring Me the Horizons bias data and they are a bit all over the place, both under and over estimated.
Thank witness, makes sense seeing your post!

I really find Amity over rated and hope people do too this year. One song ok but three is a bit much when there music has been pretty ordinary.
All 3 of their songs have actually been slipping down my estimate lately. They possibly won't crack the top 50 in the end.
Hey Hijinx, were you looking for which songs were being used in the "Do You Remember this Track" ads?
I heard one this morning with Camp Cope - Done and Drake - Too Good {Ft. Rihanna}.
Hi Hijinx,
How is Drinkee going on your count?

Also is there much lovin for Kiiara yet?

Surprised Alarm hasn't been more popular with voters!

Kiiara has "Feels" in the top 300, "Gold" has seen a couple votes but not much to note, and "Drinkee" has moved up to #132. Also both of Anne-Marie's hits are in the 400s and her Like A Version just below them.
Gretta Ray looking any chance?
Almost certainly, I've got "Drive" at #36 and "Unwind" at #156
Hello how is alex laheys and Paul Dempsey songs going

My album votes:

BABYMETAL - Metal Resistance
Beyonce - Lemonade
Chance The Rapper - Coloring Book {Mixtape}
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
Flume - Skin
Jeff Rosenstock – WORRY.
Joey Purp – iiiDrops {Mixtape}
Kanye West - The Life Of Pablo
Miike Snow - iii
Weezer - Weezer (The White Album)

I didn't really want to vote for "The Life of Pablo" (probably my least favourite KW album, frustratingly inconsistent), but it will probably have 6 songs in my EOY countdown, including two in the top 5, so here it is.

As for my ten songs, that is probably still a month or so away for me. This will probably be my toughest year to choose the final ten songs in the time I have been voting in the Triple J Hottest 100.
My Hottest 100 votes:
Beyoncé - Don't Hurt Yourself {Ft. Jack White}
Bon Iver - 33 "GOD"
Camp Cope - Lost: Season One
D.D Dumbo - Satan

Kanye West - Ultralight Beam
Olympia - Smoke Signals
Radiohead - Burn The Witch
Sunflower Bean - Easier Said
Tash Sultana - Notion

My first time voting and also my first post here.
Hiya! Nice picks

I tweeted Kingsmill when voting opened that Blonde was missing on the list so I want to believe if not for me it wouldn't have gotten in

King Gizzard though! What a start to this.

Oh good on catching the bottom 10 I was just about to post it haha. Glad Camp Cope snuck in there.
How did Lemonade go in the album poll?

Also, how is Beyonce fairing at the moment jinx?
No luck on albums unfortunately, I posted her song positions just above a day ago, not much change since.
How about DMA's, Lapsley and DIIV?

Quick question. Are artists allowed to ask for fans to vote? Isn't that campaigning? I noticed DMA's asked for people to vote for thier LAV. I tought this was not allowed and against the rules of JJJ?
Yeah it always happens, they're just not allowed a tie-in with any commercial entity. It might be partly why there are always so many Australian entries, but I can't say I've ever seen anything egregiously out of place because of it [s]except maybe last year's #1 [/s]

Back in 2013 it was the premise for the promo video lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPD_UXx_PDI

This actually annoys me. Let a song get in on its own merits. I have never been a fan of this song. Hope it doesn't make the top 10.

I've noticed that Baauer's 'GoGo' is eligible this year? I'm sure it was released in October last year, and was on the voting list iirc? Must be eligible because of the 2016 release of 'Aa'.
Wow thought Conquerer would be doing better. If she didn't have three releases it probably would be.

That is fucked if what TravD says about GoGo is true and Kiiara's Gold gets left off the voting list two years in a row.
Hijinx, I forgot to ask about a couple of others! How are the Bennies, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Luca Brasi and In Hearts Wake/Northlane ranking? As you could probably tell I'm a hardcore Rock music fan

He's closer than you might expect! I have Lazarus at #122 so it should at least make the top 200, where it lands from there depends how it stacks up, since artists with an older fanbase will be underestimated, but 'hip' artists will be overestimated. A bit of a wildcard. Having the same curiosity about Radiohead who have Burn The Witch right on the cusp.

Blackstar #349 also if anyone was curious

Mine is also not that indicative of my EOY

Some songs I thought would be on there were missing, while I was quite surprised to find Friend Inside on there I'm disappointed at some of the exclusions but I have managed to make a decent list anyway! I didn't end up adding any songs not on the list to my vote ftr. Not as good as the previous three years but still some great tunes here. Narrowing down to 10 songs was still a difficult task!

1. Alaska - Maggie Rogers
2. Ember - KLP
3. Get Money! - E^ST featuring Mallrat
4. I Feel It Coming - The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk
5. Love Like This - Indian Summer featuring Lastlings
6. Power - Harts
7. Shelter - Porter Robinson & Madeon
8. Smoke & Retribution - Flume featuring Vince Staples & Kučka
9. Together, Locked Safely - SAFIA
10. What's It Gonna Be? - Shura

These were all in consideration at some point:

Because I Love You - Montaigne
Been Here Before - Indian Summer featuring Eloise Cleary
Checkmate - Bag Raiders featuring Benjamin Joseph
Final Song - MØ
Fool For You - Kilter
Fool To Love - Nao
Fuck With Myself - Banks
Free - Broods
Friend Inside - Bag Raiders
Gemini Feed - Banks (last song I culled )
High And Low - Empire Of The Sun
Never Be Like You - Flume featuring Kai
Starboy - The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk

I wonder why The Temper Trap has suddenly become a near-favourite? Interesting to also see them put decent odds for 'Closer', 'Gold' and 'The Greatest'.
Hijinx, in your tallying what song/s that aren't in the voting list have been the most voted for?
Innerbloom & Like Soda lol

Otherwise Formation at #584 I think
Wow, thanks.

I would have thought Closer, Gold or The Greatest would have been up there.
How is Holy Holy & Solange going?

Every year I tell myself I should wait to vote because I always find something new that I want to vote for within the voting period, but I didn't think it would happen this year. It has though, and Adore (which I really should have listened to sooner!) is the song. I'm very pleased it's looking like a strong contender, although I won't be so pleased if it loses by one vote.
I haven't put my votes in yet. Love$ick is in my shortlist but judging by Hijinx's twitter updates it is doing well so I might give my vote to a song not doing as well.

Hijinx how are Aurora, Kiiara and Grouplove shaping up? Also Martin Solveig?

Sofi Tukka and Broods I saw an update on in one of your twitter updates so am certain they need and will get my vote.

The only other song I was thinking of voting for was All Night by Crystal Fighters so where is it ranking?

Thank you.
Conqueror #236
I Went Too Far #350
Warrior #395

Feels #233
Gold #647

Do You Love Someone #139
Welcome To Your Life #145

All Night #860

The two Grouplove songs are almost never more than 2 votes apart, it's the most entertaining battle to watch for me

Did this ages ago, it was SO HARD!

A.B. Original - 2 Black 2 Strong (BRIGGS AND TRIALS January 26 was close, but enjoy this more due to it's aggression, my brother is also a big fan of them)
Alex Lahey - You Don't Think You Like People Like Me
Alice Ivy - Almost Here (featuring RaRa) (not holding out great expectations but you never know)
The Avalanches - Frankie Sinatra (featuring Danny Brown and MF Doom)
Desiigner - Panda (Panda Panda Panda Panda)
Flume - Never Be Like You (featuring Kai) (favourite for #1)
Hilltop Hoods - 1955 (featuring Montaigne and Tom Thum) (also hoping Montaigne's solo tracks can get a placing)
Illy - Papercuts (featuring Vera Blue)
Tash Sultana - Jungle
when does voting close?
How are the Like A Versions going on your count Hijinx? I know that DMA's are really high, and Paces/Guy Sebastian might get their first Hottest 100 entries.
Yeah DMA's have been #4 for weeks, though Gambino is very slowly catching up now

Otherwise to note:

Paces #58
Luca Brasi #61
A.B. Original #64
Halsey's garbage #73

Elk Road at #139 is the only other one that's remotely close.
Hi Hijinx, any love for "City Lights" by the White Stripes?
Just a little, at #708
Tamia's song Into You was featured in the 2015 and 2016 countdowns.

Released in 1998. Sampled in 2003 in a rap song. Like a Version in 2015 and released as a dance track in 2016.

Not including original songs released in a given year but this must be one of the first times (if only) that an older song being covered has appeared in two consecutive countdowns. So rule out Hotline Bling because the original was released last year.
These were my votes.

Broods - Free
Drake - One Dance {Ft. Wizkid/Kyla}
Weeknd, The - Starboy {Ft. Daft Punk}
MØ - Final Song
Tash Sultana - Jungle
Jack Garratt - Surprise Yourself
Nicole Millar - Tremble
Flume - Never Be Like You {Ft. Kai}
Frank Ocean - Pink + White
Strokes, The - OBLIVIUS
How are tired lion, dd dumbo, klp and the avalanches going?

I've noticed in the Warm Tunas count, 'Know Better' has all of a sudden shot up to #4!?

How is Spit Syndicate looking on your list Hijinx? Also, how is Drake and Desiigner looking on your count?
Here's your answer https://www.instagram.com/triplejgoldenticketwinner/

I've got Know Better at #197

One Dance #59
Too Good #134
Fake Love #386
Feel No Ways #483
Summer Sixteen #565

Panda #118
Tiimmy Turner #616
What is that? That just someone trolling and hoping to stuff the warmest 100 up?

Will any of those votes count?
Maybe 1 of them will, but it's clearly a cut/paste photoshop job considering the votes don't even line up correctly
How's your list shaping up in comparison to Warm Tuna anyway, Hijinx? More precision and a greater sample on your part, I'm sure...

When are you planning for the "big reveal"?
For what it's worth I did my 18th consecutive vote today after much debate

Broods - Free
Metallica - Hardwired
Empire Of The Sun - High And Low
Disturbed - The Sound Of Silence
David Bowie - Lazarus
twenty one pilots - Heathens
Brand New - I Am A Nightmare
Living End, The - Keep On Running
Sarah Blasko - I Wanna Be Your Man
Korn - Rotting In Vain

For what it's worth i'm suspecting i'm not going to enjoy the countdown much come Australia day. Especially if Beyonce or Drake makes the cut, seriously something wrong with the music landscape if that happens imo.

Also what are the odds of Bieber making the cut with Cold Water or Let Me Love You?

No idea yet, just taking this a day at a time and seeing how I feel when I get there
Hijinx, are you keeping records of the order in which you count the votes? So can you compare block 0-10000 against 40000-50000. Do you think the voting patterns remain the same or are very different. Might help you decide how much is really required for an accurate count.
Yeah every one of my 500 vote 'snapshots' is archived so I can examine that sort of thing. Trends definitely have gradually shifted but not always in the expected ways. I wouldn't expect The Hard Aches to still be safely sitting in the top 40 after all! Exactly how accurate it is to be, I have to wait until the results to know, though I have wondered if the whole thing would look more accurate if I just knocked off the first 10,000 votes lol
My vote:

Beyonce - Hold Up
Beyonce - Freedom (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
Childish Gambino - Redbone
Dj Khaled (feat. Drake) - For Free
Drake (feat. Wizkid & Kyla) - One Dance
Flume (feat. Kai) - Never Be Like You
Mura Masa (feat. A$AP Rocky) - Love$ick
Rae Sremmurd (feat. Gucci Mane) - Black Beatles
Pnau - Chameleon
PON CHO (feat. Paige IV) - Frozen
The mad busyness of early January for me has subsided so now I can has VOAT!

1. High and Low - Empire of the Sun
2. Somebody Else - The 1975

Hijinx, would you rate Amy Shark (or anything else) much of a chance for the top, or does Flume seem to have it wrapped up?

30Cub Sport - Come On Mess Me Up
Yeah it's basically a head to head (much like the last 2 years) that could go either way without much potential for outside contenders.
Thanks for sharing Hijinx - is what you've posted the actual results of your count, or have you adjusted accordingly as you predict(e.g. Violent Soho ranking lower than the sample as per previous years)?

If so, any plans to post your actual count, assuming that you're not still going?
Hilltop Hoods coming in at #3 would be pretty funny.

I predict Hijinx's top 5 to be pretty accurate. I don't see Jungle coming in at #3.

I am looking forward to the countdown.

Still reckon Flume will come out on top.
Yeah it's an adjusted count. I might post the raw numbers some time in the future.

>2,255,110 votes (biggest poll to date)
>66 Australian songs
>23 first time artists
>26 artists discovered on triple j Unearthed
>13 non-Australian countries from 34 non-Australian songs

Big up for Aussie music!

So keen for the countdown tomorrow! Can't believe we're already here.
Trying to do work out the different countries

1. Australia (Flume etc)
2. Canada (The Weeknd etc)
3. NZ (Broods etc)
4. UK (Catfish etc)
5. US (Gambino etc)
6. Sweden (Miike Snow etc)
7. France (Daft Punk)
8. Denmark (MO)
9. Germany (Milky Chance)
10. Nigeria (Wizkid)
11. Haiti (KAYTRANADA)
12. Barbados (Rihanna)

I must be missing something obvious because the only other country I can find remotely close on my count...is JAPAN!!!!

I was wondering the same, they might break the UK up into England (Glass Animals etc), Wales (Catfish) and even Guernsey (Mura Masa).
Ah that's probably it!
The other thought could be Zambia (Sampa the Great) if For Good by Remi makes it.
Predictions for the top 10

1. Flume - Never Be Like You
2. Illy - Papercuts
3. Flume - Say It
4. Amy Shark - Adore
5. Tash Sultana - Jungle
6. Hilltop Hoods - 1955

and also
25. Blink 182 - Bored to Death
50. Dune Rats - Scott Green
75. The Amity Affliction - All Fucked Up
100. Camp Cope - Done

Here's my pred. Tho I based it off Hijinx's numbers, so i'm slightly cheating

2. Adore
3. Jungle
4. 1955
5. Papercuts
6. Believe
7. Say It
8. Redbone
9. Stranger
10. Viceroy

50. Camp Cope
