This is an update of a similar thread I did in 2015. I recently decided to update the lists I posted there, but instead of bumping that very messy thread, I decided to split it in two and make two new threads containing the new lists.
In this thread, I will be posting my own personal Hottest 100 lists for each year from 1993 up to 2017 and probably beyond.
The rules and make-up of these lists will be slightly different to those in Part 1.
This time, seeing as there are already individual year Hottest 100s from 1993, I don't need to try and predict them. Instead, it will be more about my personal taste. However, it will be a slight advantage to a song if it did well in the actual countdown.
Also, there will be more than 100 songs in each countdown, as I've been supplied with many invaluable links reminding me what songs were out in each year. I will post 101+ first, then 100-1.
With the exception of 1993, which lost a few songs to 1992 and a few tracks that were too 'pop' for my liking, each list will contain the original Hottest 100 list in it. Note that on a few occasions* a song appeared in two Hottest 100s. I will only allow it in once. (* the songs affected were listed in my old thread, see link above).
From 1999 onwards, I will be doing 200 songs per list, based mainly on the Hottest 100 voting lists which are available online (thanks thejuicer145!) - but there will be exceptions!
Apologies in advance if anyone disagrees with what year I put a song in. Sometimes I found it difficult to marry a year up if an album was released in one year when a single from it was released in a different year (usually the year after), also if a song didn't otherwise become big until a year after it's parent album was released. For the songs that were in the original Hottest 100s I've stuck with the year they appeared in even if their albums came out earlier. Happy if you make your own list and disagree with my definition.
I may make minor edits to these lists as I go along, if I find songs that I missed.
I won't be posting lists as frequently as in Part 1, as it's taking me much longer to re-order so many songs! It might only be once a week. Last edited:
Forgot to mention that the right hand column is where the song finished in the actual countdown, and NA means that it wasn't in the countdown, though I'm sure everyone has worked that out by now
Might only post the songs 50 at a time from here on in, as I am taking much longer to put these lists together.
And here is part 3 of my 1993 list (#50-1) (edited 17/11/17, moved some songs in from 1992)
I removed Ace Of Base, East 17 and a couple of other pop songs from the list, don't think they would be allowed in the Hottest 100 in other years. Plus I can't stand any of those songs in their own right, so there's that reason too.
At #10 in the list is the brooding title track from Tool's undertow album.
At #9 is the closing track from Pablo Honey by Radiohead, Blow Out. It's still one of my favourite songs of theirs and one of the great album closing tracks. Mucho underrated among Radiohead tracks.
Number 8 is Bjork's beautiful Venus As A Boy, still my favourite track of hers after all of these years.
Coming in at #7, their highest ever position in my lists, is Depeche Mode with the swinging, swaying, thumping I Feel You.
Number 6 is The Cruel Sea with one of their best known and best songs, The Honeymoon Is Over.
At #5, very close to their actual Hottest 100 position is the ubercool Kim Deal with The Breeders and Cannonball.
At #4 is the seriously underrated Fuzzy by Grant Lee Buffalo. I only discovered this song a bit later but I can't believe this song didn't make the Hottest 100 when Dixie Drug Store did.
Pearl Jam are at #3 with their literally reflective Rearviewmirror, their finest song IMO. It's made its way into subsequent All-Time Hottest 100s, so perhaps I'm not the only one who thinks this.
The Underground Lovers (affectionally known as The Undies back in the day) are at #2 with their remix of Your Eyes, a song that still sounds amazing today.
Tool get to #1 in their second year, with the magnificent, slow-burning Sober.

AIN'T NO LOVE AIN'T NO USE Sub Sub feat Melanie Williams
Very good question juicer. I guess it's that 'Indie Cred' everyone hears about. It's a bit subjective. The 80s Duran Duran would never have made it to a Hottest 100 but the 90s version were a bit older and wiser and not 'glamorous' anymore so that's why they were in. Same goes for 80s Madonna vs 90s Madonna and 80s Kylie vs 90s Kylie vs 00s Kylie.
And here is the rest of 1994. The fuzziness and Britpoppy goodness continues (edited 28/11/2020)
Decided to put 'I Alone' by Live in the 1995 list, as it appeared in both the 1994 and 1995 Hottest 100s.
Itch-E and Scratch-E were very unlucky to miss the Top 10. They had to change their name a couple of years later when 20th Century Fox objected, so they changed their name to ... Boo Boo and Mace

"One in a million That's what I tell myself, oh wo Atomic electric This feeling that comes and goes"
Number 10 is Atomic Electric by Melbourne's Rebecca's Empire.
Just a great singalong indie track, and love the key change for the last chorus. Key changes often get me interested.
It still sounded fantastic when Rebecca Barnard performed it acoustically for an online lockdown concert a few months back.

"Can't stop what's coming Can't stop what's on its way Bells and footfalls and soldiers and dolls Brothers and lovers she and I were"
With her third entry in the Top 40 is Tori Amos with Bells For Her, the beautifully chilling third song on Under The Pink. Some people have said that Under The Pink was too similar to Little Earthquakes, but I don't see it.
Anyway, another plaintive piano ballad with excellent vocals makes my Top 10.

"If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way"
I'm sure those lines are familar to many...
If the last song doesn't kill any Hottest 100 parties, this one will.
Number eight is the song you find when you get the end/bottom of Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral - Hurt. Perhaps Johnny Cash's cover seems to get all the plaudits but it's interesting to hear it from both the young drug addict showing regret and the old man at the point of death doing the same. Both are brilliant in their own way.

"By strange coincidence, a thunderstorm had been brewing, When Mahon doing his grisly work at the bungalow, Was dealing with the most grisly job of all, The head, the woman's head."
In my 1984 list, Severed Heads came in at #7 with The Dead Eyes Opened. In my 1994, Severed Heads come in at #7 with the remix of the Dead Eyes Opened. Both versions are seminal Australian dance tunes. Around this time was my brief dalliance with clubbing and this one filled floors (and didn't turn any stomachs despite the subject matter).

Put another $2 in the australian-charts.com swear jar...
At six is the song that got me into The Dirty Three and their epic instrumentals, Everthing's F****d, the third song off their self-titled 1994 album to make this list. Hasn't aged at all, will never age, and the title is more relevant than ever...

"We all get hurt by love And we all have our cross to bear But in the name of understanding now Our problems should be shared"
If you had told me at the start of 1994 that Kylie Minogue, who hadn't had any sort of hit for a couple of years, would come back to #1 with her best ever song AND also make the JJJ Hottest 100 in doing so, I would have had you certified. But here we are. And it still makes number 5 in my own list. She would go on to make the Hottest 100 again the following year, with some help from Nick Cave.

"I got nobody on my side And surely that ain't right"
At four is what many, including me, consider to be Portishead's finest moment - Roads. Beth Gibbons' achingly despairing vocal is put over Geoff Barrow's brooding, orchestral/synth background. Puts a chill up the spine everytime I hear it.

Another $16-odd dollars to the swear jar..
Number three is the song I expected/thought would be Number 1 in the actual countdown, Closer by Nine Inch Nails. In fact, so must JJJ as when they played a selection of Hottest 100 Number 1s several years later, they played this and not Zombie. It caused a fair bit of controversy then, but imagine what it would cause now...
As for the song itself, it still sounds amazing with its driving (heart)beats and Trent Reznor's earnest vocals.

"You live your life, you go in shadows You'll come apart and you'll go black Some kind of night into your darkness Colours your eyes with what's not there"
At #2 is Mazzy Star with the divine Fade Into You. Hope Sandoval's soft, seductive voice frequently transports me to other places, and this has always been the best example of it, and David Roback's guitar is equally as otherworldly.
It looks like the band are still pressing on after Roback's passing earlier this year Here's hoping they can keep the flame alive.

"Well I've heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do ya?"
At the top is Jeff Buckley's sparse, angelic cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. For best results, listen to this one in a darkened room on a cold winter evening. They were the circumstances in which this version of the song became a permanent favourite, and Jeff Buckley's passing seemed ever more tragic.
Firstly it addresses the travesty of The Bends from Radiohead not having a single track in the actual 1995 countdown. There are four tracks from this album in my version (and another in the 1994 list).
The Foo Fighters, Alanis Morissette and silverchair all came out with strong first albums. Grinspoon make an early appearance on the back of them winning the JJJ new artist Unearthed comp.

"I think I have the best of me Inside my head No one else competes with me I think I'm great Got spirit tucked away inside"
Coming in at #10 is another one for the swear jar, the epic, brooding 'Eat My Dust You Insensitive F**k', by UK shoegaze band Catherine Wheel. Ironically it's the most shoegazey song from what is actually their their rockiest album, Happy Days. Trivia: Lead singer Rob Dickinson is first cousin to Iron Maiden's Bruce.

At nine is ex-10000 Maniacs (one Maniac?) lead singer Natalie Merchant with her first solo single Carnival. It still stands up beautifully today, so effortlessly, languid and cool.

"All your dreams are made When you're chained to the mirror and the razor blade Today's the day that all the world will see"
At eight are the 'it' band of 1995, Oasis, with their (more or less) title track from their (What's The Story) Morning Glory album (which came out 25 years ago this Friday ). And they rocked out harder than they did before or since.

"And all the roads we have to walk are winding And all the lights that lead us there are blinding There are many things that I Would like to say to you but I don't know how"
Surprise! Making it an Oasis back-to-back is the song voted the best ever Hottest 100 song by JJJ voters in 2015, as well as the #1 in the actual 1995 countdown - Wonderwall. It's dropped back ever so slightly in my estimation to #7 probably due to overplay, but it still remains a definitive 90s track. Do you really need me to describe it?
7

"This is our last embrace Must I dream and always see your face? Why can't we overcome this wall? Baby, maybe its just because you didn't know you at all"
Speaking of iconic 90s songs, at #6 is many people's introduction to Jeff Buckley, Last Goodbye. Another song that placed highly in the Top 100 Hottest 100 songs in 2015. Not a lot more needs to be said about this song either, except that it still gets me in the feels every time.

"This machine will, will not communicate These thoughts and the strain I am under Be a world child, form a circle Before we all go under"
Radiohead sure know how to end an album, don't they? Coming in at five is The Bends' closer, Street Spirit (Fade Out). Apparently REM were pat of the inspiration behind the song, well that and anti-capitalism. I think it wasn't released as a single anywhere until early '96, hence it not appearing on the 1995 Hottest 100 voting list.

"Strangely not inside strangely not outside Drowning in the middle of an eerie transition And I don't know your name Never been alive - yet I haven't died I hover disembodied in a semi-wakened haze"
In my 1978 list, Siouxsie and The Banshees came in at #4 with their first single, the short, sharp 2 minute 57 Hong Kong Garden. In my 1995 list, they come in at #4 again, with their sprawling 11-minute epic title track from their swansong album, The Rapture. A great way for them to sign off in hindsight, as they broke up the following year.

At number 3 is Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkins. It's their rockiest number, it spoke to a 21 year old me and it remains my favourite song of theirs. It's kind of taken on a new relevance in 2020.

"He used to do surgery For girls in the eighties But gravity always wins"
Whom do we know that could possibly come up with lyrics like that? Yep, that's right, T. Yorke. Radiohead equal their best ever position in my lists with 'Fake Plastic Trees'. Very glad to see it make the Hottest 100 of All Time lists after it somehow missed the 1995 Hottest 100. Not sure if it was ever released as a single in Australia, but if it was, it didn't chart.

"But still you'll never get it right 'Cause when you're laid in bed at night Watching roaches climb the wall If you called your dad he could stop it all"
Those of you playing at home will realise there's still one song missing from the 1995 Hottest 100 which must be #1, and it's Pulp's classic, epic Common People. During the Britpop era, whenever anyone asked me who my favourite Britpop bnd was out of 'Oasis' and 'Blur', I always answered 'Pulp'. Love Jarvis Cocker's lyrics and style to this day.
Now for one of my favourite Hottest 100 lists: 1996 I don't know about you but it was pure joy for me when Double J played the actual 1996 list in full early in 2017.
The Britpop battle was still in full swing, while grunge was in its death throes.
Howvever, the good music didn't run very deep, and it was a battle coming up with 200 songs.
(Edit 14/10/17: expanded to 175 songs) (Edit 2/8/20: expanded to 200 songs and revised) - here are #200-101:

"We're going to be grooving down to the morning show Grooving before the sun comes up Grooving down by the water Holding me tight"
Number 10 is Grooving by the Hunting Party, who consisted of the unlikely trio of Bones Hillman (Midnight Oil bassist), Chris Abrahams (DJ) with the vocals by Melanie Oxley, meaning that she joins her two older brothers (Jeremy and Peter of Sunnyboys fame) in making my Top 10. And groove I did to this sultry tune in the summer of '96 after finishing Uni.

"And you said that I Let it be a lesson Come and take and more Or less you lose some I will stay here in your imagination"
At nine are The Mavis', straight outta Geelong. 'Cry' is the song everyone remembers them for, and also the song that helped finish them, but "Thunder' is infinitely better IMO, with its sweet-sounding verse/rocking chorus combination.

Thom Yorke drops some more expletives at #8 with Talk Show Host - Radiohead's second song from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. Mr Greenwood's guitar riff is the real start of the show here.

"Libraries gave us power Then work came and made us free What price now For a shallow piece of dignity"
The Manic Street Preachers didn't really become a thing in Australia until 1998, despite being huge in the UK. More's the pity, as one of their most popular songs, A Design For Life, with it sing-along chorus, only came across my radar about a decade ago as a result. It started to grow on me, and made #37 in my original 1996 list in 2017. It has continued to grow on me since then, as has its lyrics, and has now come in at #7.

"The sickening taste Homophobic jokes Images of fascist folks Beam me up 'cause I can't breathe"
The one-hit-wonder of 1996, if not the '90s - the very Bowieesque Spaceman by Babylon Zoo (aka Jaz Mann). But what a hit. The lyrics for this one have taken on more meaning recently as well. It comes in at #6.

"Hello Dan, it's Joe here, I hope you're keeping well It's the 21st of December, and now they're ringing the last bells If I get good behaviour, I'll be out of here by July Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day Please don't let 'em cry for me"
At five is Paul Kelly's endearing Christmas tune, How To Make Gravy. Yes, it gets played every December 21st. It may take on a different tone this year for me as I live in a different state to the rest of my immediate family Still warms the heart even if it isn't Christmas.

"And if I die before I learn to speak Can money pay for all the days I lived awake But half asleep?"
At number 4 is a song with the longest title this side of Panic! At the Disco, Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand from the Primitive Radio Gods. Apparently this song is well known from The Cable Guy movie, butI have never seen it, so I only know it from JJJ. In recent years it too taken on an anthemic quality with me. Love the inspired use of the BB King "I've been downhearted..." sample as well.

"Breathe the pressure Come play my game, I'll test ya Psychosomatic, addict, insane"
This one isn't about the lyrics...rather the killer beats/strings. Hard to imagine how some people (not me) thought this was scary, even offensive back in the day. RIP Keith Flint.

"'Coz there's nobody else like you And we sure care just what you're doing After we have gone our seperate ways"
Runner-up in my list is the winner of the actual countdown, Spiderbait's short, sharp, stinging ode to the music industry, Buy Me A Pony. One minute 42 of pure, energetic vitriol. It still sounds great.

"When you are set to throw in your hand When you are far from home When what you believe is buried in your hands When you feel outgrown"
Coming in at #1 is the first song on my voting list, the first song I used the World Wide Web to vote for and my pick for #1 in our sweep that year (which didn't quite come to fruition). It's still my favourite Powderfinger song ever and it's Pick You Up. Love a song with a good key change and some rockin' guitars.
I find it odd that a number of these songs missed the 96 Hottest 100. Missing, Children, Don't Speak, Don't Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova, Ironic, Not an Addict, Hey Jupiter, How To Make Gravy, Peaches, Charmless Man and Wonder all seem like classic songs and were all pretty popular at the time so to be beaten by more obscure songs and a song like How Bizzare makes it just that especially when you look at Hottest 100s previously and songs like Deep and Dreams made it.
That reason is a large part of my motivation for doing these lists. That and revisiting some of the forgotten gems of this era, and maybe bringing these to more people's attention.
The 1995 (especially) and the 1994 lists were similar in this regard.
We move on to 1997. Along with 1994 and 1996 so far, the actual Hottest 100 was one of my favourites, and it was coupled with the best Hottest 100 party I ever had But I digress....
This is the year of the Whitlams' great Enternal Nightcap album, from which No Aphrodisiac came in at Number 1 of the actual Hottest 100 that year, and several other songs appeared in the 1997 and 1998 Hottest 100s as well.
Silverchair (the members of which were 18 now) released their excellent second album, Freakshow, which will also supply several songs in this list.
The Prodigy released their seminal Fat Of The Land album, two songs from which featured high on the 1996 list, but with many more tracks available to come.
And of course, Radiohead released OK Computer, widely regarded as one of the all-time greatest albums, and I must say I agree. One song from this album has already appeared in the 1996 list, but there will be many more in 1997 and 1998.
Kylie Minogue was still indie enough to appear in the Hottest 100 this year.

"Karma police Arrest this man He talks in maths He buzzes like a fridge He's like a detuned radio"
At 10 is 'Karma Police', the third track on my list from the best album of all-time, OK Computer. I was tempted to add more
10
KARMA POLICE Radiohead
8
9
"Now that I've found you And seen behind those eyes How can I Carry on"
Number 9 is Portishead's frankly chilling 'Undenied' from their self-titled second album. It's been described as that album's 'Roads', which is a massive compliment. Beth Gibbons' amazing voice is really allowed to shine.

"(English translation) And lead us not into sickness, But deliver us from evil, Because yours is the earth And the body And the health Amen"
Sigur Ros make their first appearance in my lists with 'Hun Jord' from their quite dark first album 'Von', at #8. Apparently GoT fans might know his song. Jordi's vocal talents were apparent from the get go.

"Hug me till you drug me honey Kiss me till I'm in a coma"
Number 7 is the industrial Brave-New-World-inspired trip-hop of 'Coma' from Pendulum. This Pendulum hailed from Melbourne and is not to be confused with the Perth act of the same name from the 2000s. It sounded like nothing else at the time and holds up well today.

"Well, we don't need no one to tell us what to do Oh yes, we're on our own and there's nothing you can do So we don't need no one like you to tell us what to do We don't refer to the past when we're showing what we've done Our generation gap means the war is never won The past is in your head, the future's in our hands"
At six is The Living End's grand statement of intent, the anthemic 'Prisoner Of Society'. They wore their Stray Cats/Ska influences on their sleeve and within a couple years a number of similar bands to them would crop up. As for them, they would make 10 Hottest 100s staight starting here. I seem to recall this song came out very late in the year and was unlucky not to place higher in the actual countdown.

"And I don't believe in the existence of angels But looking at you I wonder if that's true But if I did I would summon them together And ask them to watch over you"
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds come in at Number 5 with their most beautiful song ever, 'Into My Arms'. The Boatman's Call was a welcome return to form for them after 'Murder Ballads'.
5
INTO MY ARMS Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

"When I am King You will be first against the wall With your opinion Which is of no consequence at all"
Coming in at #4 (and moving up a position from my original list) is Radiohead again with the pivotal track from 'OK Computer', Paranoid Android. A six-minute epic with more twists and turns than you can poke a stick at, and of course mega props for the Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy reference.

"Forty, shaved, sexy, wants to do it all day With a gun-toting trigger-happy tranny named Kinky Renée Tired teacher, twenty-eight, seeks regular meetings For masculine, muscular, nappy-clad, brutal breeding"
At #3 is the winner of the actual Hottest 100, 'No Aphrodisiac', from The Whitlams masterpiece, 'Eternal Nightcap'. It was a surprise #1 at the time but in hindsight, it was the right choice. I was living 2700km from the person and family I loved at the time, so this one resonated with me - a lot.

"And I wonder When I sing along with you If everything could ever feel this real forever If anything could ever be this good again The only thing I'll ever ask of you You gotta promise not to stop when I say when"
Runner-up is Everlong by the Foo-Fighters, the JJJ All-Time staple, and rightfully so. It remains a mystery how it didn't make either the 1997 or 1998 Hottest 100s. Don't think it even made the voting lists.

"'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life Tryna make ends meet Tryna find some money then you die I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down You know the one that takes you to the places Where all the veins meet yeah"
On top is 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' by The Verve, from another of 1997's great albums, Urban Hymns. Those soaring strings and the message of the song do it for me each time. A shame The Verve couldn't go on with it.
Been an avid follower since the beginning and even been playlisting your lists on Lastfm
Anyway as some may know, to me this is part of the golden era of Australian chart music and Australian music in general (early '96 through to early '99) and coincidentally contain the best Hottest 100's ever
On your summaries first, yes Leonardo's Bride were indeed a wonderful band and you could forever get lost in Abby Dobson's lovely vocal.
I was really late into loving Radiohead but I did enjoy several songs at the time. I still at times struggle to love them as an album act though but as time goes on they definitely did push the envelope by offering something nobody has been able to replicate and probly never will.
Pendulum 90's is a totally different act to the Pendulum of 00's (How does this happen?)
'Prisoner Of Society' was an absolute monster movement in Australian music in general imo, I put it up there with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' as being the leader of a genre movement. Apart from the bubblegum pop movement of '99-'00 the next big thing would be 'Chop Suey' for me.
Like Radiohead I was very late into Nick Cave. 'Into My Arms' is indeed a very special track.
Freak? Really? It's good but imo the majority of Frogstomp was better but their best was to come later on for me
'No Aphrodisiac' is just one of those universally timeless tunes that we'll continue to hear until we die, superb and Tim Freedman's best work easily.
At the time the Foo Fighters were still gaining their credit and becoming the live band they were and still are. 'Monkey Wrench' & 'My Hero' got a lot more exposure on radio and RAGE but 'Everlong' over the years has become their go to track especially live and of course because of that wonderful video. It was indeed released as a single but again wasn't the monster it should've been. They began turning heads here in Australia after the 'Learn To Fly' single/video.
Now I love Urban Hymns and I like 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' but give me 'The Drugs Don't Work' any day!
I agree '96 to '99 was a very special time in Australian indie music and chart music in general. We had Recovery to look forward to every Saturday morning to get exposure to this great music too. This time coincided with my first time away from home and independence.
Yep - Freak. Some of their Diorama songs were excellent too I must admit. Very interesting to track their musical growth from 14 year olds again.
I will start on 1998 this weekend, and hopefully by next weekend I'll finish it - another 175 songs to get through! Last edited:
Btw finally somebody gives some love to Cold Contagious! I still remember only ever catching the clip one late Friday night but will always remember their epic performance on Recovery Easily their best track and I really think they are an underrated group in general.
I guess this is a more subjective list on your personal tastes rather than what might have been so I won't make any comments on the order of the songs, (other than Paranoid Android not #1 )
Looking at 1997 (won't go all the way back), I'll add some songs I would have included (in my personal list)
I WOULD HURT A FLY Built To Spill HOW HIGH The Charlatans (Prefer this to North Country Boy) BOYS BETTER Dandy Warhols MOGWAI FEAR SATAN Mogwai R U STILL IN 2 IT? Mogwai SUMMER Mogwai AVENGING ANGELS Space THE LAST AUSTRALIAN GUITAR HERO TISM
The 1998 list is taking longer than expected, but that's because there will be 200 songs in it!!
Boys Better from the Dandy Warhols will be in it.
You're right about The Living End Beanster, I've seen the 1998 and 1999 shortlists and there are several Australian ska-influenced groups springing up such as Area 7.
Sorry about Paranoid Android but at least I had it higher than in the actual countdown
(revised 27/5/2020) Blimey that was tough ... but I have completed the 1998 list. All 200 songs (for the first time)
Not as strong as the two years prior, but I have definitely enjoyed revisiting the music of this year. '
Here are the new #200-101. Note that in this list and in #100-1, a few songs have gone back to 1997, and one has come back from 1999. Apologies if these render the follow up commentary nonsensical.

WAY OVER YONDER IN THE MINOR KEY Billy Bragg and Wilco
Some great tracks in this list. Was Lauryn Hill played on JJJ? I sort of fell out of JJJ around this time as Wild FM was more my thing.
Also Madonna confuses me as sometimes she is on JJJ and other times she's not? What's the story with her? Pre 90s she has had one hit make the all time lists but many more could have especially Like A Virgin which has a segment named after it on JJJ. I would have thought Vogue and Justify My Love would have been JJJ hits. Erotica and Secret have a JJJ appeal to them too. I could see Frozen and Ray of Light on JJJ and then Beautiful Stranger, Music and Don't Tell Me either made the Hottest 100 or on the voting lists. Nothing from her thereafter. Die Another Day could have had potential. I am glad she has featured on JJJ but confused by how they feature some and not all her music.
Not 100% sure about Lauryn Hill but I know the Fugees were played on JJJ two years before. But 'The 'Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' was and is a highly regarded hip hop album.
Madonna confuses me too. I agree with you about Vogue and Justify My Love, then she got lost in her own excesses in the early 90s, before coming back in a big way with the 'Ray Of Light' album. she did make the actual 1999 and 2000 Hottest 100s before losing her 'edge' disappearing again in the early 00s. Like you I thought 'Ray Of Light' and particularly 'Frozen' were worthy of making the list too.
(revised 23/6/2020, with lyrics and slight revisions) Now that I am pretty much up to date, I have looked back and started revising my old lists, starting with 1998 - still one of my favourites. I will go through rest of the 1990s (hopefully expanding the 1993-97 lists to 200 songs, then the 1980s).
Apologies if these revisions render the follow up comments nonsensical.

"Love is a bird, she needs to fly Let all the hurt inside of you die You're frozen When your heart's not open"
#5 is still Madonna's best ever song, Frozen. She had disappeared a***wards in the early 90s, been pretty quiet since 1994 - then she went away, reinvented herself, made the Ray Of Light album, gothed up for the filmclip, looked amazing doing it and released this as the first single. It made for a massive impact.

"As weeks went by, it showed that she was not fine They told me, "Son, it's time to tell the truth" And she broke down and I broke down 'Cause I was tired of lying"
To keep the misery going, #4 is Brick by Ben Folds Five, his very dark but beautiful ode to personal experience of relationships gone bad (slight understatement).

"Vision is rejected The people's choice is tested So ignorance has won"
#3 is Powderfingers second finest song and still relevant ode to Pauline Hanson, The Day You Come. Such great guitar and layered vocals.

"This is my church This is where I heal my hurts For tonight God is a DJ"
#2, another one to file under 'How the hell did it not make the Hottest 100?'. I speak of the mighty floor-filling God Is A DJ by Faithless (well it filled the floors I was on) Still one of, if not the, best beats of the decade.

"Love, love is a verb Love is a doing word Fearless on my breath Gentle impulsion Shakes me, makes me lighter Fearless on my breath"
And at #1, Massive Attack go one better than they did in 1991, and Liz Fraser goes four better than she did in 1983, with the sublime Teardrop, and its amazing 'baby' videoclip. The whole song just takes me to a better place and time. I do wonder what that baby is up to now, aged 22
1998 was a good year and I like your #1 much much better than the actual #1 .
I had been really into the music of the mid-late 80s and early 90s but all the bands I loved were gone (Pixies, Smiths et al) or not making great albums (Cure, Ride etc) by the mid 90s and the bands that replaced them I just wasn't into (grunge and industrial) so I had lost interest in new music to an extent.
I heard the Gomez song Whipping Picadilly on the radio while in England late that year and picked up the CD Bring It On, which I loved. Also heard Placebo while over there and got Without You I'm Nothing. First new music I had bought for a while. Got home and played these to my friends, who introduced me to Neutral Milk Hotel, Godspeed and Boards of Canada.
So in honour of 1998, here is my Hottest 51 of the year
<nothing to see here, please move along >
P.S. Looking at your list, I missed Rabbit In Yr Headlights, thought it was early 2000s, it can have the honorary #52 position Last edited:
Thanks OBOne for your list and feedback first of all.
I don't dislike the actual #1 in the '98 Hottest 100 nearly as much as I did then, in fact it has grown on me enough over the years to make it to #16.
I too nearly missed UNKLE, until someone posted its amazing videoclip a few days ago. Then I was reminded it was indeed 1998 when it was released. It was in fact the last song added.
First thing to say is that I'll have to check Neutral Milk Hotel out! You are clearly a fan. As well as the other songs not common to my list. Also I'll have to check Boads Of Canada's earlier music out as I go through the years, I'm only familiar with their Dayvan Cowboy-era material.
Very nice #2 and #4 I must say
I don't think I have given the Beautiful South enough credit, though admittedly 1998 is the first year I (finally) heard their music.
Hopefully I will have 1999 ready by the end of next week.
@K8 Yep, Bongo Bong was 1998. He played at the Sydney Festival 3-4 years ago (was that the festival you were at?) and it was huge. Robbie Williams and Lily Allen do a pretty decent cover as well.
@benji2 I must admit Pretty Fly has never grown on me. Do check out Neutral Milk Hotel, the album (In The Aeroplane Over The Sea) is, to my mind, one of the best! Last edited:
No OB..., it was at a festival from 2001 to 2005. I don't remember which as I used to be a bit of a festival junkie back then. Might have been BDO one year. I just remember everyone loving it!
The Watchmen, and Stereo in particular are unjustly forgotten.
Hoping to get 1999 up tomorrow, if not early in the week. Only about 35 songs to place, but at least I have a chance to do appraise them this weekend. Last edited:
The end of the 90s, Recovery and a great era of indie music.
The first list I've done with the aid of the actual Hottest 100 voting list. Many thanks to thejuicer145 for giving me the links to that.
Also for K8 again for reminding me of The New Radicals, it's in the list at #119.
Trent Reznor gave us The Fragile double album, which provides four songs out of the 200.
It was also a great year for the various types of dance and electronic music. The Chemical Brothers, Moby, Endorphin, P'nau, Underworld, sonicanimation, Groove Armada, Gerling, Aphex Twin, Friendly and Primal Scream all out with some great new material during the year, and some remnants of Fatboy Slim's 1998 album You've Come A Long Way Baby also making the list.

"It's coming round again The slowly creeping hand Of time and its command It settles in its place Its shadow in my face Puts pressure in my day"
#7 is the actual #1 song in the Hottest 100 of that year, These Days by Powderfinger. Thought they were unlucky in 1996 and 1998 not to finish closer to the top so was very glad for them at the time. And this is the stark version from the Two Hands movie (which I much prefer), not the album version from the following year.

And at #1, the amazing Touched by VAST, which Angel fans may be familiar with. More musicians should use Bulgarian choirs, they sound absolutely awesome. This is a song I can never get sick of, even if the videoclip was a bit odd. VAST never even got close to following this up.
The 'Top ten' blurbs have been updated for 1993-96.
I've posted the Hottest 100s up to 1997 on my YouTube page.
Before I leave the 90s (and probably lose K8 ), I will revise the lists I've done. I will especially look at those from 1987-96, based on some of your suggestions and some other songs I've realised I've missed.
I may expand the 1992-96 lists as well. Last edited:
Is benji2 your YouTube name? I'll definitely check these out!
Have my own 50-odd faves from 1999 to post as well but still sorting the order of the bottom few (and have added Let Forever Be to my list after looking through yours as I thought it was later). My #1 for 99 wasn't in the actual hottest 100 (same as my list for 98) but you do have it on your list (unlike 98). Should be higher though and you have misspelt it Last edited:
Well have sorted out the end of my faves for 1999. Ended up with a "Hottest" 56 (I had 55 and added Let Forever Be after looking at your list) headed by the completely otherworldly Svefn-G-Englar by Sigur Ros!

I left a couple of songs to 2000 as well, even though I remember listening to (and liking) them in 1999 as the vagaries of the Hottest 100 voting lists put them in 2000.
I have now posted the 1998 and 1999 lists on my YouTube site.
About the 1999 list...when I was posting it to YouTube, I looked at and listened to Svefn-G-Englar again, then some of the songs above it, then back to Svefn-G-Englar again ... and the upshot is I have revised the 1999 list accordingly.
Have added a couple of songs to the 1993 and 1994 lists, and made some minor edits accordingly. #48 was about the highest position affected in either list.
The 2000 list is still a little way away, sorry. Last edited:
Blimey, that was hard work. 2000 wasn't the strongest year IMO.
We seemed to reach peak nu-metal and skate punk and skate metal and nu-punk that year. Lots of videoclips featured young kids jumping up and down madly around wrestling rings containing the band.
Powderfinger came up with Odyssey No.5, widely regarded as their best album, the Dandy Warhols came up with Thirteen Tales from Suburbia (their best album IMO), and Radiohead finally came up with a follow-up to OK Computer, with Kid A.
A young band from the UK named Coldplay made their first appearance.
The Sydney Olympics were on, which 'inspired' a couple of songs in the list as well.

IN A BEAUTIFUL PLACE OUT IN THE COUNTRY Boards Of Canada
(small edit 4/12/17: Pissing In The Wind moved to 2001, One Line added)
Note the #100 song - one sport higher than its actual finish and justifying it's inclusion on the H100 CD
At #10 is RATM doing what they do best, raging against Wall Street with Sleep Now In The Fire. Still as relevant as ever.
#9 is The Eels' signature song, Mr E's Beautiful Blues. Come to think of it, that song is still relevant too.
You Am I make the Top 10 at #8 with their most beautiful song, Damage.
At #7 are The Dandy Warhols with their biggest hit and perhaps THEIR signature song, Bohemian Like You.
#6 comes all the way from Finland with the funky Freestyler, one of the biggest dance tracks of the year.
At #5 is the actual #1, My Happiness by Powderfinger. It's not quite my favourite Powderfinger song, but it's a damn fine song.
Number 4 is the big dance track of the year, Groovejet, featuring a young Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Spiller. It still sounds great.
The Avalanches are at #3 with a song from an album that broke new ground and took 16 years to follow up. The song is of course Frontier Psychiatrist.
The runner-up is Sour Girl by the the Stone Temple Pilots. Very late in their career and a bit atypical of their usual sound, it's still a sweet sounding indie tune. RIP Scott.
And at Number 1, Machine Gun Fellatio, also with a very atypical sounding song for them (i.e. serious), Unsent Letter. It may or may not have been co-written by Tim Friedman of The Whitlams fame (he and Pinky did 'No Aphrodisiac'). Their best song by a mile.

GROOVEJET (IF THIS AIN'T LOVE) Spiller feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor
OK I came up with a top 65 for 2000. We nearly had the same #1 but the excellent Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes (from the equally excellent Moon & Antarctica) just got the nod this year. I had problems splitting the two GYBE songs so I put them together, mainly as I reckon it would be ace to have 40+ minutes of instrumental rock in the countdown.

The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret - Queens Of The Stone Age
Now that the festive season is over with, and I have managed to put together my Top 10 of 2017 for more current Hottest 100s, I hope to have 2001 done in the next week or two.
OH WOMAN OH MAN London Grammar GREEN LIGHT Lorde WHAT CAN I DO IF THE FIRE GOES OUT? Gang Of Youths LOVE Lana Del Rey PHOENIX Sara Blasko BOUNDARY ROAD All Our Exes Live In Texas THE END OF THINGS Gary Numan TRUTH IS A BEAUTIFUL THING London Grammar MURDER TO THE MIND Tash Sultana DO WANT YOU WANT The Presets
Nice. I'll have to check out the Gary Numan as I haven't heard his newer stuff but love the old. Love the Lana and Gangs songs in particular and the London grammar ones have grown on me as I've heard them more. Sarah Blasko is my wife's favourite so she'll be happy.
I'm currently trying to whittle mine down to 10 including which Gang if Youths song (either the one you picked or Blood or both).
Double J will be replaying the 1997 Hottest 100 on Sunday Jan 28th starting at noon EDST. Still one of the best, if not the best, one ever. Just the songs, not the between song banter sadly, but still it'll be great.
And now onto 2001. Apologies that it's taken so long, what with Xmas/New Year holidays, and the 2017 Hottest 100 to vote for, and there being no Sigur Ros songs to put in the list
The year of 9/11
Nu-metal and nu-punk had their last hurrah, while The Strokes, System Of A Down, The White Stripes, Gorillaz, The Hilltop Hoods, The Herd, Missy Higgins and Faker all made first appearances, all of whom would be prominent players in the noughties and beyond.
Radiohead were still going strong with Amnesiac, and Tool with Lateralus

FIFTEEN FEET OF PURE WHITE SNOW Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
At number 10 are the funky beats of Dust Me Selectaa by Gerling. I dimly remember boogieing along at a bush doof to this...
Number 9 is the epic Citizen Erased by Muse. Shades of Knights Of Cydonia in this one, which is no bad thing..
At 8 is James with the extremely catchy (and brilliant) Getting Away With It (All Messed Up). That title sums me up over the years,
Number 7 is the divine Special Ones by george. Katie Noonan's voice gave me goosebumps then and still does now, and this song was an excellent showcase for it.
System Of A Down crash in at 6 with Chop Suey. It was was like nothing I'd heard before then and still kicks ass now. It was everywhere in late 2001. We will be seeing more songs from Toxicity in 2002.
At number 5 is the John Butler Trio with Take, which is another epic. I always preferred it when he got a bit angry, prefer this one to Better Man.
Number 4 is New Order's great return to form with Crystal, eighteen years after they topped my list with Blue Monday. I found most of their 90s output a bit forgettable so this was a great surprise.
At three is another great comeback song, Schism from Tool, after a five year absence. IIRC this song wasn't on the Hottest 100 voting list but still made it to Number 14 in the actual countdown, such is its epic awesomeness.
<daylight>
The top two were very difficult to separate, but in the end I went with what is still my favourite Radiohead song, Pyramid Song. The videoclip conveys the sense of slow drowning beautifully. Gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.
And on top is Something For Kate's masterpiece, Monsters. This song summed up exactly how I felt for much of 2001 given everything that was happening. And it still applies, and sounds great, today

AS I SAT SADLY BY HER SIDE Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
If you associate Kids On Overload more with 2002, by all means put it there I can't remember exactly when I first heard it, but it was on the 2001 Hottest 100 voting list (available online is you google search) which is what I've been going with from 1999 onwards - you guys don't have to
I won't have the 2002 list done before January 27th, so I hope everyone has got their votes for the 2017 Hottest 100 in and that they enjoy the countdown.
Kylie made the list! For some reason I thought her music from Fever was played on JJJ. Don't know why I thought that. Maybe it's because the album appeared somewhere on JJJ.
Good to see Linkin Park's In The End make it too. I often wondered how this was overlooked on JJJ when a few other songs from the same album were on the voting list. Great song!
It's not that I associate it with 2002, just my recollection is off. I remember Robbie Buck at the time saying that if it wasn't in the Hottest 100 he'd eat his hat. It wasn't . I'm not sure if any hats got eaten.
OBOne: Don't think any hats were eaten, most disappointed...we should hold him to that!
I seem to recall Missy Higgins offering to do a nudie run if her song came in at #1 in 2004...hmm, could make that happen
I also remember the furore about the ABC news theme supposedly making the 2004 countdown. Then it actually did make #11 six years later.
K8: Yes, haven't given up on Kylie's indie cred just yet! And if One Step Close can make the countdown, then the much better In The End certainly can. RIP Chester 😢 Last edited:

In reality, my top 10 songs would be a little different, I would have Shark Smile instead of Mythological Beauty (wasn't on the list) and maybe 2 Wolf Alice, Smith Street Band and Gang Of Youths songs (those being Beautifully Unconventional, Birthdays and What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out) instead of either QOTSA or The National.
Sorry about the delay, but I've finally done my 2002 list (aka Annus Davus Grohlus). Although it was also Annus The Vinus too, they made a huge impact on the year too.
I seem to remember being a bit disappointed with the actual Hottest 100 of this year, and the 10 Dave Grohl songs actually saved it a bit.
Consequently only 53 of the original Hottest 100 made my Top 100.

YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS: PT 1 The Flaming Lips
Basement Jaxx make the Top 10 for the second year in a row with their very steamy 'Get Me Off'. A much pleasanter film clip too than 'Where's Your Head At' I must say
george released their fine 'Polyserena' album after a long wait, but well worth it. They too make the Top 10 for the second year in a row at #9 with Katie Noonan's beautiful vocal on Breathe In Now.
Number 8 sees the best of the many Foo Fighters tracks of 2002 IMO - All My Life. Still kicks a fair but of ass.
At Number 7 is the best U2 track in many, many years - Electrical Storm. Such a beautiful song. How this one only got to #97 in the actual countdown, when Sweetest Thing, Beautiful Day, Elevation and Vertigo all made the Top 40, I've never understood.
At number 6 is The People from Leeds' sadly forgotten The Music. This song was a massive opening salvo from them, followed by a strong first album - then another album in 2004 - then I never heard from them again here in Australia, although apparently they kept going until 2011. I think this song came out at the tail end of 2002 which is why I think it didn't feature in the Hottest 100 that year. It should have, it's another kick-ass song.
Fair play, Marshall Mathers. I've never been much of a fan of Eminem but he knocked it out of the park with this tongue-in-cheek number. And you can dance and sing along to it. I'm talking about Without Me of course, it comes in at #5. The film clip still cracks me up too.
At #4 is Howlin' Pete Almqvist and the rest of The Hives with I Hate To Say I Told You So. Pete never howled better than in this belter track.
Number three is Grinspoon's finest song, Chemical Heart. So wonderfully heartfelt. Unlucky not to top the actual poll that year too...
But it was kept from that spot by the Number 2 track in my list, the killer No One Knows from the Queens Of The Stone Age. A deserved winner of the actual poll, and it still stands up as one of the strongest Hottest 100 Number 1s.
And at number one - the closing track from Sigur Ros' () album - Untitled 8 or Popplagio. Eleven minutes of sheer awesomeness which they haven't come close to replicating since. The same could be said about the whole () album really.

THIS TRAIN WILL BE TAKING NO PASSENGERS Augie March
Hopefully the wait for the 2003 and 2004 lists won't be as long as I've already got 'shortlists' of more of 200 songs, something it took me ages to get to for 2002.
I didn't include Popplagio on my list as I prefer some of the other songs but it was a highlight (and finale) of their live set when I saw them last year.
I got to 100 songs for 2002, mainly because of the sheer volume of songs from Interpol's majestic Turn On The Bright Lights, which is right up there for my favourite album of all time. There were also brilliant albums from QOTSA, Sigur Ros, Beck and Broken Social Scene, making it a very good year IMHO

2003: The year of Powderfinger and 'Byron Bay' music
By that I mean in the actual countdown there were five Powderfinger songs, three of which made the Top 10, and every third song seemed to be an acoustic number from one of Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Pete Murray, Xavier Rudd, Michael Franti or The Beautiful Girls!
A couple of big 2000s acts appeared for the first time: Little Birdy, Gyroscope, The Panics (all from WA too)
The White Stripes released their appropriately huge Elephant album, Powderfinger released Vulture St and The Dandy Warhols released Welcome To The Monkey House. Very animal themed indeed...
Like every year from 1999, the majority (but not all) of the songs on this list were either in the actual countdown or on the official voting list.

At Number 10 was Hardest Button To Button, another corker from the Elephant album. The videoclip is great too, as was the Simpsons parody of it
Number nine is what remains my favourite Missy Higgins songs, Greed For Your Love. So sweet.
At 8 is my pick of the many Powderfinger songs in the list, Love Your Way. It most resembled their earlier work and is my favourite of that album.
At the same position as the original finished 18 years earlier is Placebo's brilliant, eerie cover of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill.
Number 6 is another great, early tune from an up and coming new act - Relapse from Little Birdy. My favourite track of theirs too.
At #5 is another fine Dandy Warhols song, We Used To Be Friends. Welcome To The Monkey House didn't get much love at the time, but upon re-listening to it I have to say it isn't bad at all.
At #4 is the mighty funky Danger! High Voltage! by The Electric Six (feat. Jack White). It suffered in the real countdown by coming out in January and not one month earlier or six months later. This song was everywhere that summer.
In a position they would become all too familiar with are The Hilltop Hoods with the tune that brought them to national attention, The Nosebleed Section. It has featured highly in subsequent All Time countdowns, and it should (though maybe not #4). Also, Blackwood High School reprazent!
Number 2 is The White Stripes with their masterpiece, Seven Nation Army. Always sounds good.
One the top is Johnny Cash with Hurt. It could have gone into 2002 when the album was released, but the iconic film clip was filmed in 2003, and of course we lost both June and Johnny in 2003 as well It still gives me goosebumps at the very least every time I hear it, if not brings me to tears. Even Trent Reznor says this is the best version.

2003 was the year Ministry of Sound was getting alot of plays for me and Satisfaction was at the top of the list. Planet Funk's Who Said was up there too. Shame this missed the countdown.
I find the 2003 countdown on the ordinary side and it might have somerhing to do with the Acoustic overload.
I saw Linkin Park where in the voting list for 2003. Such a shame they missed making the countdown. Bigger shame In The End was never on any voting list because it would have been interesting to see if it would have done well on the Hottest 100.
Nice as always! Your entire Top 10 made my list (last year's in Hurt's case)
2003 wasn't the best of years I agree but there were some fine highlights, White Stripes, Outkast, Death Cab For Cutie and Magic Dirt for sure and there was a lot of Bens (which is good).

I have heard some songs from it. I seem to recall hearing Jaz Coleman's very scary laugh while being interviewed on JJJ around this time.
It would certainly be eligible for this list and I have one of the songs from it at #120.
And thanks for the bump I can announce that having moved house over Easter, I am now back into doing the 2004 list which should be up in the next few days.
The only Outkast songs on the Voting Lists (http://hottest100.org/votinglists.html) were Hey Ya, Spread, Prototype (from 2003) and Ghetto Musick (from 2004).
Don't think So Beautiful was played much (if at all) on JJJ.
A few big Australian Hottest 100 acts make their first appearance in one of my lists this year, namely The Presets, The Grates and one Wouter De Backer (aka Gotye). A band out of Scotland name Franz Ferdinand also made something of an impact, taking out the actual Hottest 100 and have three songs in that list.

YOU'VE RUINED ALL MY FAVOURITE SONGS Machine Gun Fellatio
I don't think So Beautiful was a JJJ hit either, if it was played there at all, but I liked it better than any of his songs that made the 2003 countdown so I've included it at #38, ironically where another non-JJJ song from U2 came in the actual countdown.
Unfortunately I couldn't make the nudie run Missy Higgins promised she'd do way back on Australia Day 2005 if any of her songs made #1 happen
At Number 10 is Love Outside Andromeda with the powerful Tongue Like A Tether. I liked their self-titled album (Boxcutter Baby came in at 47 as well) and was hoping they'd kick on and rock the rest of the decade but I think they and their style of rock went by the wayside not long after this, more's the pity.
At number nine is an extraordinary epic early track from Gotye, The Only Thing I Know. It actually came out on an EP in 2002 originally, then on his first album in 2003, but only hit JJJ in 2004, appearing on that year's voting list. A hidden gem.
At 8 and 7 is an Evermore double header, For One Day and It's Too Late. Another band from across the dutch that made a huge impact in 2004 with these fine songs. And you all remember the OC, don't you? Even without that connection, these songs still sound great.
Number 6 is a lot of people's wedding tune apparently, This Old Love by Lior. It still sounds beautiful and gets me in the feels whenever I hear it.
At number 5 is the Gary Jules' beautiful version of Mad World. It would probably have killed several Hottest 100 parties stone dead but that's not what these lists are about! Had trouble deciding which year to put it on as it was originally recorded in 2001 for Donnie Darko, released in 2002, re-released overseas in last 2003 before being played all over JJJ in early 2004. So I've gone with the latter.
Sara Blasko comes in at #4 with Don't U Eva, another song that gets me in the feels everytime I hear it. Not sure exactly why but Sara's beautiful voice may have something to do with it. 2004 was the year she released her first full album, The Underscore and The Overture, and a great one it still is.
At number 3 is divine Breathe Me. The best way to listen to this song is the extended version over the last 5 minutes of Six Feet Under and to try not to become a blubbering wreck.
Number two is Block Party's statement of intent, Banquet. It has rightfully made the Hottest 100 of all time list in 2009 on JJJ and if it come out a month or two later, would have taken out the 2005 Hottest 100 easily I think. If it came out a bit earlier it would have given Take Me Out some competition.
Speaking of which, Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand I think was the most convincing number 1 ever in the actual Hottest 100 and is my number one too. It still sounds amazing. Very hard to picture it not coming in on top.

I THOUGHT YOU WERE MY BOYFRIEND The Magnetic Fields
Nice list as always! Your 1 and 2 are in my top 5! I associate Mad World with Donnie Darko so I should have put it in my 2001 list (which I will as I'm expanding it out to 100)! I had Tongue Like A Tether just outside the 100 and Hecate Pose inside. Haven't listened to the early Gotye, will have to.
2004 had some cracking tunes and albums. Interpol's Antics was as good as their debut (ie awesome), Franz Ferdinand, The Killers and Arcade Fire (even though wasn't picked up on JJJ at the time) announced themselves with great debuts.

#18 - theredsunband was the first "free download" I got from the JJJ website. It was a precursor to unearthed website maybe but they put free MP3s of new bands up on the front page! Also discovered Berti Blackman through these.
#17 - The Go! Team. Their 2004 album Thunder, Lightning, Strike is one of the oddest albums to try and pigeon hole. From their wiki page, a mix of indie rock, garage rock, blaxploitation and bollywood soundtracks, double dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars. It works fantastically (hence 4 songs from it on my list).
I'll start by saying that the actual Hottest 100 is still one of the weakest ever, especially if you don't like Wolfmother and Ben Lee. It made putting this list together quite tricky. In fact none of the Top 4 of my list made the actual Hottest 100, only 5 made the Top 10 and only 52 made the Top 100.
Me, I'm ambivalent towards Wolfmother. Three of their six -- 6! - Hottest 100 songs made my Hottest 100.
That said, there was still plenty of good music around that year.
Anyway, here are #200-101:

LITTLE SELF CENTRED QUEEN Clare Bowditch & The Feeding Set
We nearly had two Icelandic acts in the Top 10, and neither of them Bjork, but Emiliana Torrini just slipped out of the Top 10 in the final washup.
At number 10 is Brooklyn's The Bravery is the still punchy An Honest Mistake, accompanied by a really cool Rube Goldberg-type videoclip way before Ok Go tried it.
Flame Trees is still my favourite Chisel song, and Sara Blasko (whom I am seeing this week) is still one of my favourite Australian singer-songwriters. Put them together in a wonderfully stripped down version and you have #9 in my list. As The Chaser boys said on the day, it's the song where you turn to your mate after a few drinks during the countdown and tell them how much you love them. Though I have several of those high up in my countdown.
Still not sure how a fine rocker like Themata by Karnivool only came in at #97 in the actual Hottest 100 list #shouldhavebeenhigher. I have it at #8.
Number seven is a great lost Radiohead track, I Want None Of This. Leave Thom Yorke alone with a piano and some depressing lyrics, and beauty usually ensues, just like it did with Pyramid Song, still my favourite of theirs.
At #6 is the pick of the Gorillaz songs that came out in the 2005, Dare, featuring a certain Shaun Ryder. Still danceable and fine-sounding.
Number five is Fast Girl by Gyroscope. I remember voting for it and remember thinking on the day how much better it sounded than a lot of the songs I had heard up to that point and would hear. In fact it is the highest ranking song from the actual Hottest 100 in my list.
Sigur Ros were back in 2005 with a new album, Takk. I didn't quite get into this album as much as I did their previous two. They were starting to get too accessible! However Glosoli, taken from it, is as good as anything taken from Agnaetis Byjrun or (). It builds up to its climax nicely, and comes in at #4.
At #3 is a song I want played at my funeral, Hope There's Someone by Antony (now Anhoni) and The Johnsons. Again, a song that would lead to many hugs and 'I Love Yous' if it was played during an actual Hottest 100. So beautiful, especially when he hits those high notes.
Love Outside Andromeda are in the runners-up spot with their finest song, Bound By Hurt Dissolved (despite what I may have said about Tongue Like A Tether). Sianna Lee is seriously underrated as both a songwriter and a vocalist, in the 00s or any other decade.
A few years back, a number of indie musos were polled as to their favourite song, and Sharkfin Blues by The Drones came out on top. Who am I to disagree? It helps though that I love this song too. A worthy winner.

Great as always. I particularly like your #4 and #6
I'm unaware of your #2 and #7 so I'll definitely have to check them out as both bands are awesome. Didn't register that Dakota was this year, might have been a chance of getting in my list.
I agree that it wasn't a great 100 but there was some good stuff about in 2005. And at #33 is the first Like A Version I can remember, quite a few covers in general as well (#21, #31, #33, #67, #71 and #82).
#1 goes to my fave song by one of my fave bands of the era, the mighty Butterfly Effect.

A nice #1 (even if it only got to 27 in my list), our #4 and #6 match, and nice to see the Go-Betweens in the Top 10 one last time before Grant McLennan's sad passing the following year.
Not to take it back to 1993 but after seeing a Triple J ad from tue 1994 year end the music being played was The Key: The secret. Were they played on JJJ? It looks like they may have been.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky9IKe-vsCY The 3:15 mark is the ad I am referring too. Also uses Boom! Shake the Room. I doubt JJJ would be promoting either artist if they weren't on their playlists.
I am surprised that neither song could crack the Hottest 100 in a pop heavy year and a song like Deep could. Even Shoop, Somewhere and Boom-shackalacka made it. It does seem odd that this is the case.
Just letting you all know that I have revised my 1998 list, based on new discoveries since the list was first created 18 months ago. It is in the original post. I will be doing the same to 1999 once the actual Hottest 100 of that year is replayed on Double J on the 27th *plug* , as well as attempting to expand my 1993-97 lists to 200 songs and revising those. Eventually I will also look at 2000-05, but not for a while yet.
A quick glance over the 1993 voting list and I could identify these songs were on the official voting list.
I have included the ones I could figure out and left blanks for the others which someone might be able to add if they know. Being in alphabetical order might help. I have included words I could figure out.

I keep getting a forbidden error message when I post the last column of the 1993 list and that happens if I edit the post above or start a new post so I will post letter by letter as there are a few songs I haven't figured out however am confident I am correct with the songs I have figured out.
Looking at 100% Hits Volume 7, 8 and 9 were helpful and it's interesting that almost 15/18 songs from each volume are included in the voting list. Hit Machine Volumes 1, 2 and 3 as well as Sweat It Out weren't as evident but still a good 50% represented from each edition. A handful of 100% Hits Volume 6 songs were also featured. One song that appears absent and featured on 100% Hits Volume 7 and one of the few songs not included from the compilation is Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer.
The songs I haven't figured out I have left a space for them if someone else has a chance to fill in the blanks. The forbidden message appears to have something to do with this post so I will post in small blocks.
Start Chopin - Dinosaur Jr Steam - Peter Gabriel Step It Up - Stereo MC’s Stone Me Into The Groove - Atomic Swing S Sundial - Tumbleweed Sweat - Inner Circle Sweet Lullaby - Deep Forest
Baby For You - Cleopatra Wong Crazy Birds - Not Drowning Waving Dreams Of Heaven - Ground Level Hits From The Bong - Cypress Hill I Put A Spell On You - Bryan Ferry (not sure of the artist but he had a 1993 version) Let Me Be Your Underwear - Club 69
Some insights/observations from what I can see: -The Forbidden message is to do with the Dinosaur Jr song title by the looks of it.
-DJ Jazzy Jeff isn't included despite being used in one of their ads.
-Funky Junky is on the list however, Gimme Little Sign is not!
-Give Into Me not on the list either despite MJ & Guns n Roses being featured in previous lists and one MJ included in this list!
-No Guns n Roses songs (Civil War or Yesterdays were releases in 1993)
-Two Princes appears absent which is a surprise especially as Little Miss features and a song of theirs I am not familiar with called Jimmy Olsen's Shoes.
-The Crying Game is also absent from the voting list!
-No The Key The Secret either (another song which featured on a Triple J advertisement).
-The absence of late '93 releases indicates Voting List cut off appears to be October 1993 as it features late 1992 hits with the likes of Arrested Development, Wendy Matthews, Utah Saints, Divinyls, Madonna and Frente. This might explain why The Weight and Tears Of A Clown are also absent from the list. Got To Get It is another that is missing.
-The Day I Went Away & Friday's Child both feature however If Only I Could does not and one of 4 songs from 100% Hits Volume 8 missing from the list!
-Looking at 100% Hits Volume 7, 8 and 9 were helpful and it's interesting that almost 15/18 songs from each volume are included in the voting list.
-With all the pop inclusion and almost the whole 100% Hits volume 7 included, Charles & Eddie is not on the list!
-No Bon Jovi for a station that had a large rock following.
-No Jimmy Barnes for an Aussie Rocker and having two solid hits with Sweat It Out and Stone Cold.
-No John Farnham and his song Seemed Like A Good Idea which featured the crew from ABC's The Late Show.
-Jump Around made the Hottest 100 but is not on the voting list!
-PM Dawn also doesn't appear on the Voting list!
-Only one RHCP's song on the list!
-Inner Circle don't appear with Bad Boys.
-Snow features with Informer however fails to appear with the lesser known Girl I've Been Hurt and is one of a handful songs missing from the list from 100% Hits Volume 9.
-Erotica and Rain by Madonna appear but no Deeper & Deeper or Bye Bye Baby. Last edited:
Wow - thanks again K8! Keep that 1993 voting list coming along. Hopefully someone can find 1994-96 and 1998.
I've been looking closer at the 1997 list and can fill in some of the blanks from A-E: Almighty Ultrasound - Christmas At Brandos Ambersunshower - Running Song Natacha Atlas - Amulet Bellicose - Candlestick Brad - Lift Brand New Heavies - Sometimes Brethren - Slingshot Crystal Method - Busy Child Death In Vegas - GBH Depeche Mode - Barrel Of A Gun Depeche Mode - Useless Dinosaur Jr - Take A Run At The Sun Tanya Donnelly - Pretty Deep Drop City - Living In The Machine The Dumb Earth - I Closed My Eyes And A Brick Came Through The Window The Earthmen - Whoever's Been Using This Bed Echo and The Bunnymen - I Want To Be There When You Come Effigy - I Give In Endorphin - Solar Flare Eta - Casual Sub (Burning Speak) Even - I Have Nothing Everclear - Everything To Everyone Everclear - So Much For The Afterglow
It's amazing that there were only 254 songs on the list, with several of them being 1996 'hangovers'.
I don't think any song titles trigger the 'Forbidden' error, rather I think it's a bandwidth problem/too many people logging in problem. Anyway, one way around it is to replace 'www.australian-charts.com' with 'www.hitparade.ch' and do your post on Steffen Hung's sister site. And thanks for the heads up that it’s been an issue today
I edited the 1997 post above. The forbidden message is to do with the Bunnymen song so make sure you add that one as I excluded it. It goes above Effigy.
1997 Main observations include: - Not as pop heavy as 1993 voting list.
- Daft Punk features with Da Funk but not with Around The World.
- Faithless features with Don't Leave but not Insomnia
- Leonardo's Bride features with So Brand New but not with Even When I'm Sleeping or Buddah Baby
- The Offspring features with I Choose but not with Gone Away
- Foo Fighters feature with Monkey Wrench but not Everlong
- Oasis look absent from voting list with all 1997 releases which is interesting considering they had the #1 song for the 1995 Countdown.
- U2 don't appear in voting list with Staring At The Sun and some other 1997 releases.
- Kylie is not on the voting list despite making the countdown with Did It Again. Both Some Kind Of Bliss and Breathe featured on different volumes of an Indie Compilation at the time consisting of all Indie songs which pretty much all made the Hottest 100 countdown.
- Gala's Freed From Desire which I first heard on JJJ and instantly fell in love with is missing from the list! This is where I ask the question if any song that featured with the Wild FM series had been excluded for some reason. MIght explain things for Around the World, Insomnia and Meet Her At The Love Parade. Even Jellyhead had a punk feel to it!
I always wondered how a song like Barbie Girl would have faired especially as Aussies like the gimmick/novelty songs. Last edited:
Knievel - Something Good Must Come Lamb - Gorecki (an awesome song BTW) Lord's Garden - Morning Light Morphene - Early To Bed Mr Blonde - Blow Up Mr Blonde - Heaven Non Intentional Lifeform - Living Or Existing The Orb - Toxygene
Yeah, I think the overt pop songs mainly disappeared after 1994, with a few exceptions.
Surprised Gone Away wasn't on the 1997 voting list, but it must have been on the 1998 list, coming in at #62 that year (should have been higher than Pretty Fly).
Interesting that Kylie wasn't on the voting list considering she made the 1994 and 1995 countdowns, yet still came in at #81 in the 1997 coundown.
Insomnia is a strange one. It was actually released in album format in 1995 (which is where it'll be in my lists), but not released as a single until 1997. That time discrepancy didn't stop JJJ then so strange not to see it anywhere.
And even though Be Here Now was released in 1997, and as you say, Oasis topped the 1995 Hottest 100, it was very strange not to see them in the 1997 list. I know Be Here Now isn't very highly regarded, but jeez, they must really have been on the nose.
Forgot to mention that the www.hitparade.ch site is in German, sorry . My Year 9 German is just good enough to navigate around it, but if you enter the English version of the thread you want to edit first, then type in 'www.hitparade.ch', and remember that the login and password windows are in the same place, you should be ok.
Benj, did you know there was a voting scandal in the 1994 Hottest 100? I think I got the gist of it where fans campaigned in the hopes to get a certain song to the #1 spot however, only managed to get it in the sixties in a time when voting pins per song and unlimited voting from fans was quite possible. The song is called Lemon Sparked and wasn't even tipped to make the top 100. I had never heard this before.
Found a few more unknowns from the 1997 voting list: Blekbala Mujik - Walking Together Boo Boo & Mace - Flowers In The Sky Cactus Child – Fall ‘97 Kiva - Eternity Born Nuno - Crave Screamfeeder - Static (confirmed) Wannadies - You And Me Song
....and that 1997 voting list has proved to be useful, as it transpires that there are several 1996 releases on it.
It has helped me extend my 1996 Hottest list to 200. I will post the revised #200-101 shortly in the original 1996 post above, followed by #100-11 tomorrow, then the Top 10 from Tuesday.
I think when I first did the 1996 list, I paid the original 1996 Hottest 100 list too much respect. So there will be many changes.
Like most people here I will be going into 2020 list compilation mode now that it's December, but I will also keep working on the 1993 list. Thanks to K8's and OBOne's detective work on the 1993 Hottest 100 voting list pic my shortlist for 1993 is much more advanced than it otherwise would have been.
After that, I'm planning keep going back, and posting versions of my 1975-92 Hottest 100s (in a new thread this time) based solely on my own preference, while tweaking and archiving the predictive ones in the current thread.
Wow, we're finally gotten some of the pre-2000 voting lists. Awesome.
A couple of songs I could make out on K8's post.
*The 'Beauty &' song is Beauty & Danger by Killjoys *The 'Booty' song is Bootyfull by Skunkhour *The 'Cupid' song is by JC-001. *Under 'Detachable Penis' is Different Colours One People by Lucky Dube. *Don't Walk Away by Jade is actually Dream All Day by the Posies. *The 'Silent' song by Paul Westerberg looks more like Dyslexic Heart. *The Falling Joys song starting with F is Fiesta!
