Forum - ARIA Charts: Special Occasion Charts - ARIA 2017 Year End Chart

Even though we are still 2 months away from early January, when the 2017 Year End Chart is announced, I thought that it would be good to open a thread where members can make their predictions.

Going through some old topics, I quite enjoyed the quiz Effluvium1 made in 2014, so I decided to make a similar one for 2017

1. Can Ed Sheeran score 4 entries in the Year End Top 10 (yeah Top 10, not Top 100) with Shape Of You, Castle On The Hill, Galway Girl and Perfect?

2. ED SHEERAN - Galway Girl or Perfect?

3. CLEAN BANDIT - Rockabye or Symphony?

4. THE WEEKND - Starboy or I Feel It Coming?

5. BATTLE OF THE GIRLS - Maggie Lindemann's Pretty Girl or Hailee Steinfeld's Most Girls?

6. AUSTRALIA: How many Australian tracks will feature in the list (including songs that feature Australian artists)?
(Worth 5 points - 1 point off per difference)

7. AUSTRALIA: Pnau's Chameleon or Dean Lewis' Waves?

8. AUSTRALIA: Jessica Mauboy's Fallin' just missed the weekly Top 10? Will it make the Year End Top 100 or just miss it?

9. Can Rita Ora score her highest placing ever on a Year End Chart with Your Song, thus beating the #70 spot she achieved with Black Widow in 2014?

10. Can Macklemore score his highest placing ever on a Year End Chart with Glorious, thus beating the #9 spot he achieved with Thrift Shop in 2012?

11. Who will get the most entries (including featurings)?

12. Long running singles in the Top 100: Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop The Feeling or Flume's Never be Like You?

13. Long running singles in the Top 10: Imagine Dragons' Thunder or Shawn Mendes' There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back?

14. How many tracks from 2016's list will also make this year's list?
(Worth 5 points - 1 point off per difference)

14a. What 2016 track will be the highest?

15. EUROPE VS AMERICA: The Chainsmokers' Paris or Miley Cyrus' Malibu?

16. GROUP VS SOLO: Can Camila Cabello's Havana land higher than Fifth Harmony's Work From Home (#15 in 2016)?

17. POST MALONE: Congratulations or Rockstar?

18. ONE DIRECTION: Can all the 5 members score a spot?

19. CALVIN HARRIS: Feels or Slide?

20. P!NK: Will she be #2 for a 5th year on a Year End Albums Chart woth Beautiful Trauma?

Damn, I swear Lil Uzi's gonna miss the list just because ARIA have messed up on more than one occasion.
People are completely underestimating Perfect IMO.
Hmm you could be right, it could do quite well but I don't see it getting anywhere higher than #15
^ Don't underestimate all the time it's spent in the Top 100 before it was officially sent to radios.

I believe we will only have 2 or 3 #1s in the Year End Top 10 (Shape Of You, Despacito and perhaps Rockstar) which would probably be a record.
Yeah, I'm actually starting to agree with you I.E, considering its spent 36 weeks in the top 100 I won't be surprised if people underestimate it. I did a bit of research and I'm pretty sure 2 or 3 would definitely be the record as well
The EOY albums will be super hard to predict this year because...

1. A massive lack of big albums. Compared to the last 5 or 6 years, 2017 has barely had any albums that will go down as massive albums. 2016 had the same problem but there were way more big albums than this year

2. A massive lack of certifications. I know certifications don't always mean everything but it would be a lot easier if there were certifications so it could give people a rough idea of where everything will place
I don't agree about the lack of big albums as Divide and Beautiful Trauma are already sure to sell more than what Adele's 25 did in 2016.
Well besides from those 2 there haven't been any other massive albums
2016 didn't particularly have any big albums either. You just need to look at the Year End Top 10: 2 Christmas albums, one of them having been released in 2011, an album of covers and 2 other 2015 LPs, with 25 even topping the chart. It really was à dead year. At least in 2017 we've had new LPs by Ed Sheeran, P!nk, Taylor Swift and Sam Smith.

The changes of consumer habits who now prefer streaming and who are buying / downloading less and less albums as well as the poor inclusion of streaming in the albums chart explain why albums chart sales are still miserable and why less and less albums are certified.

I'd Say that there are some big eras but due to the changes of consumer habits, it is no longer well reflected into the albums chart.
True, I feel like album certifications need to have streaming to make sure that albums are getting as many certifications as they used to
Streaming has actually been included into albums accreditations since Friday, May 5th. However, "the two tracks attracting most streams are reduced to the level of the average of the next eight highest streamed tracks associated with the album". This rule is a bit stupid IMO. If an album generates some big hits, then it is penalized simply because it includes hits...
I think it's valid, since it's supposed to be measuring the popularity of albums. You need to omit the top two tracks as outliers because otherwise you get a mess like in the US charts where pretty much any big one hit wonder will get a decently charting album if it had already been released, or nothing if it was delayed, even though the album itself is no more popular in the former case.

There's also a manipulation factor to it, where artists will shove old hits on albums just to generate big numbers (and possibly instant certifications). Post Malone's debut album actually went platinum in the US back in March, largely because White Iverson was on it, and I imagine Drake slapped Hotline Bling on Views because it was the only one of his loose singles lying around that'd gotten really popular. Chris Brown encouraged his fans to spam plays for his 45 track album as a transparent way to get numbers.

When people are interested or like an album they do stream it, and the numbers are fair. I'd like to see them higher but they will get there I think. I just blame the way Spotify encourages people to just listen to the top 50 hits, and artists like Taylor Swift snekking to get higher sales.
I think the rule is fair but it is a bit annoying for albums like divide and damn because they were massive and I think damn should be at least platinum. But the rule is good for some albums. DJ Khaled's Grateful hit #7 and only spent a few weeks in the top 50 but without that rule it could've been gold due to the success of 'I'm the One' and 'Wild Thoughts'
The main thing is that more and more consumers don't care for albums as a whole and it is reflected into the ridiculous albums figures. You can just compare albums market in 2000 to today to realize it. I won't be surprised if albums disappear in the next future.

If you want to have an interesting read about changes of the music industry, you shouyld try this blog held by MJDangerous. He's been analysing the music industry on the internet for about 15 years. In his past three articles, he's been explaining the impact of streaming on the music industry and music consumers. If you've got some time, try to give it a go because it's highly interesting and sums up perfectly what I want to explain lol:

Will try to read that later when I get the free time.

Don't get me wrong though I do agree with you in regards to how people consume/don't consume albums (I apologise if my post last night read as a bit too 'YOU'RE WRONG'), but in a sense, that apathy should be what's shown in the chart. I don't think we should artificially prop up the numbers to make it seem like people care more than they do, that's just hiding from the truth.
Wow thanks I.E. That completely changed my view on the whole thing
Don't worry Hijhinx. I didn't read your post as 'You're too wrong' at all lol.

I do understand your point but at the same time I can't help thinking that reducing the impact of the 2 most streamed tracks of an album is unfair.

A lot of one hit wonders in the past got big albums (see MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice).

In regards to manipulation, well, that already existed in the past with some acts deliberately releasing or re-releasing albums to artificially inflate sales thanks to fans. Not to mention fans of boy bands buying multiple copies of albums to get the best chart showing ever. It is easier for a fan top buy multiple copies of an album than stream tracks of an album to equal I album sale.

Most people in the past used to buy CD albums thanks to the big hits it generated without being particularly being interested in other tracks or the artist. Without those hits, albums wouldn't have sold as many units. With that ARIA rule, you completely take off the strength of albums, hence the pitiful streaming figures. I know we have the Singles Chart but it should also be reflected in the albums chart IMO. Even though streaming will keep growing, I doubt we'll get much higher figures than what they already are and won't be big enough to compensate the collapse of digital and physical albums sales.
2017 seems to be a pretty average year all round in terms of music. I haven't followed the ARIA charts much this year but after a quick glance of lists above it appears very pop flavoured Hopefully 2018 will be a better uear!
I think it's been a great year for music IMO.
Yeah its been a better year than 2016 for me
iTunes just released their top songs of 2017 in Australia and I thought I'd post the top 50 it here bc this will be a big part of the ARIA EOY

A little shocked that Fallin' didn't make the top 50, and that Little Mix and Rae Sremmurd are both so high given they came out last year.
Remember you have to suspend your disbelief regarding the sizes of different hits because digital sales were far higher at the start of year than the end.
I first thought 'Play That Song' looked out of place but can now see that it did have a strong iTunes run.
Play That Song being higher than Humble is ridiculous
Fallin' was #57 btw Chris

If Christmas doesn't get into the EOY top 10 this year then this will be the first year since 2008 without Buble in the top 10
Pretty sure that Christmas will be Top 10 again this year.
Possibly but he hasn't hit the top two at all this year (the week he hit #1 in January counted towards 2016)
Does anyone know what day the EOY charts are coming out? (I know its usually 6th of January but just in case someone has heard something different)
Most likely Wednesday bryc but could be as late as Friday.
Alright thanks
Based on the top 10 sales figures provided by bulion each week and a formula for the rest of the top 100 (although I think it slightly overestimates sales), here is my predicted 2017 top 100 with sales:

(XO TOUR Llif3 & Location were robbed!)

Yep definelty agree about kendrick and how the actual fuck did Happier outsell XO Tour Llif3 and location
ftr it didn't 'outsell' (well it probably did on iTunes) them, but ARIA were late on letting both of them into the chart, and they never retroactively fix that, so they both missed a bunch of weeks like that. And then ARIA didn't add Lil Uzi's album streams so it started sinking down the chart even though its streams were (and are!) still really good.

To put it in perspective, Location is #36 on the Streaming Singles chart, no way should it have missed the main list
Yeah, on the albums side of things pretty surprising to see Eminem at #21 after only 2 weeks compared to an album like More Life that spent over 30 weeks in the top 50 (ik More Life had lower debut sales)
^ Eminem had 2 strong weeks of sales before Christmas.

Not surprised at Ed's domination. Shame that Location and XO TOUR LLif3 got screwed but that was predictable.

Pleasantly surprised that Water Under The Bridge managed to sneak in.

The genre charts are interesting and a bit more surprising. I definately didn't expect to see Poker Face, Tik Tok, I Gotta Feeling or Walking On A Dream in the Dance YE Top 100.

Same for Big Jet Plane, Sweet Disposition and Somebody That I Used To Know in the Australian YE Top 50.
I've added an ARIA Top Singles of 2017 list to my site.

Hear them all here - http://top100singles.blogspot.com/2018/01/aria-top-singles-of-2017.html

I've also added ratings for every ARIA Top 100 single in 2017 - http://top100singles.blogspot.com/2016/12/every-aria-top-100-single-in-2017.html
I suppose I can be glad Coldplay were finally able to make an ARIA EOY Top 10 for the 1st time ever, top 5 even. Even if it isn't their best track from this year. I'm think the last time we had 4 tracks by the same artist in the EOY Top 10 was The Beatles. Also lol at Eminem getting to #3 with only 2 weeks of sales.
Now all we have to do is wait for the Quick List Vote Game to start.

The oldest song on the Australian EOY songs was Highway to Hell followed by You Shook me all night long. AC/DC had three songs in the Australian top 50 with Thunderstruck from 1990 the latest of them. The Horses is at number 31 with Never Tear Us Apart at 47. Shame ARIA doesn't have a Catalogue songs chart.

Yeah good idea Keith although Thinking Out Loud will probably be #1 every week
I'm surprised 'Bloodstone' missed out the Top 50 Australian Artist Singles chart...

Also quite interesting how some of the Top 10 smashes fron Sep-Nov (e.g. Too Good At Goodbyes, Friends, What Lovers Do, I Fall Apart) are quite lower than anticipated, just like a few tracks from last year, highlighting a slower sales period which wasn't as slow as a few years before.

Also, great to see heaps of Aussies in the Top 100 Albums chart...
For the record I'll probably re-start QLVG on the 22nd, want to utilise my free time as efficiently as possible for the time being.
I'm pleasantly surprised at how accurate my system was. I think I had 95 out of the top 100, and should've had Water Under The Bridge but I didn't include it in my original calculations. My system would've had it at number 95 with 112,200 sales. I also hadn't calculated Happier, but my system only has it at around number 107 with 93,600 sales.

Location was definitely robbed, as I had it comfortably in the top 100. XO Tour Llif3 was touch and go so I'm not overly surprised it didn't make it.

For the record, the sales figures I had for the other songs that weren't in my top 100 but ended up making the official list were Shed A Light (98,400 - #104), Sexual (95,200 - #106) and Never Be Like You (91,000 - #110, although I had a feeling my system had underestimated this one).

Well to put it in perspective, Lil Uzi was #70 on the overall streaming chart, but based on kworb's Spotify AU numbers http://kworb.net/spotify/country/au_daily.html he really should be in the top 40 there, so much just isn't being attributed.
I also wish ARIA had a catalogue singles chart. That would be hugely interesting.

I just heard and watched XO Tour Llif3 for the first time today... ummm overrated much? It didn't even chart that well! Anyway the Top 100 looks absolutely fine if I was to swallow that fried spotify spamwich. Love seeing Backwater Swift sully her comeback song somewhere in the lower reaches where it belongs!

I'd definitely be down for a catalogue singles chart considering greatest hits are no longer confined to albums in the digital (reporting) era.
I swear I'm not intentionally trying to sound like a broken record, but my point is that ARIA's EOY is absolutely based on the chart runs contained within the top 100, and my point is that the chart run is factually incorrect. If you look at its Spotify chart run, it should have spent maybe 30 weeks within the ARIA top 60, but it didn't even spend that long in the top 100 because ARIA messed it up http://kworb.net/spotify/track/2eMwDehkIC1j68U6FA3Eiq.html Regardless of what you think of the song, the chart is pretty useless if it can't even serve an accurate barometer of what it's supposed to measure.
That barometer has been around for a long time, e.g. chart denials, under reporting, under/over certification etc, ARIA have a long history of factual incorrectness and that is not helped by the over zealous big four promoting only the solid gold hits.

Have you noted it to ARIA directly? That seems to be the best way as they do retroactively fix/acknowledge bad data as far as I'm aware but it could also be ATL/WARs fault for not declaring the song to ARIA properly (possibly not realising how well it was streaming while also actively not promoting it, it seems more of a social media/streaming-only hit than something I'd see commercially in a JB HiFi for example).

Good luck.
Funnily enough I did consider doing as such! Just too shy I guess
The ARIA YEC definately include sales outside the Top 100 Hijinx. Otherwise there's no way tracks like Body Like A Back Road or Water Under The Bridge would be as high as they are.
You think? Those two don't even strike me as odd. Surely Never Be Like You would be higher if that were the case. Will happily concede if I see the numbers laid out though.
I have tuned out of Aria so much that I don't even know half the songs in the top 100 year end. I hate what Aria has become. As much as I love Flume and Never Be Like You it should not have made this year end especially when it was released 2 years ago now and in January.

Good to see Jax Jones, Future, Milky Chance, Vance Joy, Childish Gambino, Amy Shark, Mura Masa, Snakehips, Lorde, Khalid, Imagine Dragons, Macklemore, Pnau, Calvin Harris, Julia Michaels, Rag n Bone Man and Drake make it with a song and that song being it's first and probably only time to make a year end countdown.
I'm sure they are hijinx.

I did calculate some singles and albums sales to figure out figures for the various year end charts. Unfortunately, I've had problems with my Excel files and lost some of the detailed calculations I did.

However, I do remember that I had Body Like A Back Road on only 200,000 units with weeks within the Top 100 whereas the Year End Chart suggests that it did around 215,000 units.

In regards to Never be Like You, it would have never made the cut had only the charted weeks within the Top 100 been included.

In fact, in the same way the Year End Singles Chart includes units accumulated outside the Top 100, the specific genre charts work the same way. For instance, tracks like Poker Face, Tik Tok, I Gotta Feeling and Timber made the Year End Dance Chart while they never charted within the weekly Top 25 Dance Chart.

If you still have some doubts, then I can try to re-calculate tracks such as Never be Like You, Water Under the Bridge or Body Like A Back Road without non charted weeks and with charted weeks. But, without wanting to sound pretentious, I'm pretty sure that ARIA now includes non charted weeks in their Year End Charts, even though it wasn't the case prior to 2012.
Haha, I'm willing to concede and save you the effort, though I do wonder if they go all the way down to #500 or if they cut off sooner. It's a good decision to do so though, as it's clear that songs can nowadays accumulate a lot of sales while not charting. I did make the same observation, at least with the Australian singles chart, has anyone checked if there are inconsistencies between any of the charts with the main year end? (Aside from when ARIA are slow to add tracks to genre charts, like every urban hit )
Given the weekly charts actually are a Top 500, I think that they go all the way down to #500 to compile the year end charts.

In regards to inconstencies between the year end genre charts and the Top 100 Year End chart, I haven't spotted a single one, at least for the singles (haven't checked the albums).

By the way, not trying to defend ARIA again lol but it may very well be up to record companies to request a track to enter a genre chart or not. If I remember well, it is written in ARIA's code of practice.
