Forum - Personal Charts: Your Special Occasion Charts - Benji's New Retro Hottest 100 thread Pt.3 2006 on

Part 2 was getting a bit long and hard to navigate so here is Part 3, covering the years 2006 to the present.

This is an update of a similar thread I did in 2015. I recently decided to update the lists I posted there, but instead of bumping that very messy thread, I decided to split it into three and make new threads containing the new lists.

Part 1 (1975-92) is here:
http://www.australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=50141

Part 2 (1993-2005) is here:
http://www.australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=50375

My original thread is here:
http://www.australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=45426

In this thread, I will be posting my own personal Hottest 100 lists for each year from 2006 up to 2018 and probably beyond.

These lists are mainly about my personal taste. However, it will be a slight advantage to a song if it did well in the actual countdown.

Also, there will be more than 100 songs in each countdown, as I've been supplied with many invaluable links reminding me what songs were out in each year. I will post 101+ first, then 100-1.

Each list will contain the original Hottest 100 list in it. Note that on a few occasions* a song appeared in two Hottest 100s. I will only allow it in once.
(* the songs affected were listed in my old thread, see link above).

From 1999 onwards, I have been doing 200 songs per list, based mainly on the Hottest 100 voting lists which are available online (thanks thejuicer145!) - but there will be exceptions!

Apologies in advance if anyone disagrees with what year I put a song in. Sometimes I found it difficult to marry a year up if an album was released in one year when a single from it was released in a different year (usually the year after), also if a song didn't otherwise become big until a year after it's parent album was released. For the songs that were in the original Hottest 100s I've stuck with the year they appeared in even if their albums came out earlier. Happy if you make your own list and disagree with my definition.

I may make minor edits to these lists as I go along, especially if I find songs that I missed.

I won't be posting lists as frequently as in Part 1, as it's taking me much longer to re-order so many songs! It will probably be once a month until 2013 or so, then a bit longer after that.

Anyway, on to 2006 ...

The year of The Grates (with 4 songs in the actual Hottest 100 list), Lily Allen (4 songs) and also the Hilltop Hoods (with 5).

Overall I thought the actual list was much better than 2005's, and 61 of the actual Hottest 100 made my Top 100 as well.

(Late edit 18/6/2018: Added two songs I had forgotten to the list in the Top 100, dropped two of the lowest ranked songs out as a result and shuffled some others around a couple of spots)

And now for the Top 100...

There weren't any songs from outside the actual Hottest 100 that made it in to my top 10 this time, but four made it into the Top 20.

At number 10 is Beth Ditto fronting The Gossip, with the powerful Standing In The Way Of Control - surprised it only made number 98 in the actual countdown.

Speaking of ditto, at #9 for the second year in a row is Sarah Blasko with the lovely {explain} (this is how it is spelt - at least that has qualified it for Jinxie's brackets QLVG game 12 years down the track)

Ooh Brian Molko, you bitch! At #8 is Placebo's acidic Song To Say Goodbye. I still love it.

Number seven is Little Birdy's sublime Come On Come On - my second favourite song of their and such a wonderfully crafted alt song.

At six is Black Fingernails Red Wine by Eskimo Joe. It's still hard to believe this is the same group that released 'Sweater' eight years earlier. This song was everywhere in 2006. Oh, and fingers are good for pointing, typing and putting in gloves for a start...

Number 5 is Crazy by Gnarls Barkly, another song that was everywhere in 2006, and rightfully so. The song and the film clip are works of art.

Jack White's side project, The Saboteurs (aka The Raconteurs) come in at four with Steady, As She Goes. This song still rocks and the lyrics sum up my relationship status at the time.

At #3 is the mighty Wolf Like Me by TV On The Radio. This song only came in at #63 of the actual countdown amazingly, but has since featured in Hottest 100 of all time lists, and deservedly so. It pumps me up everytime I hear it.

Runner up is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. Commercial, Grey's Anatomy connections aside, it is still an amazing piece of music that gives me shivers everytime I hear it.

And #1 is Gotye's masterpiece, Heart's A Mess. Somehow this song eluded me during the year but when the amazing film clip came out the following January, it got me hook, line and sinker. It too deservedly features in Hottest 100 of All Time lists and sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it.

Nice list. Like the high spots for The Knife (Marble House just missed my 100)! Not any top 10 crossover with my list but some top 20 (your #1, 3 and 18 are in my top 20).

For mine, I found this a hard year to figure out a top 100, alot of songs (IMHO) were similar in quality. #1 from this year probably wouldn't have made it there any other year and it moved about with #2 and #3 at various stages but well done to the Arctic Monkeys for eventually coming out on top and having my favourite album of the year as well. Shout out to Laura as well for (again IMHO) having the best Australian Post Rock album ever (and some good song titles for the latest Quick List Game).

Also, back in the day I voted for Over and Over by Hot Chip but actually meant to vote for Boy From School so justice is finally achieved 12 years on and I never thought I'd have Robbie Williams or Toni Collette in one of these lists but what can you do

2006 is the earliest year I still have my 10 votes for the countdown on record.
FWIW this is what they were (but wouldn't be now):

Augie March - The Cold Acre
Hot Chip - Over And Over (meant to vote for Boy From School)

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
Sparta - Taking Back Control
2007: The year of emo.

They seemed to be everywhere that year, and several 'emo bands' (My Chemical Romance et al) made the countdown that year. Kisschasy made an amusing song about them which will be in my list of 200.

It wasn't the strongest Hottest 100 ever (only 52 of the Hottest 100 made my Top 100), but at least we had the photo finish at the top separating Knights Of Cydonia and Straight Lines (only 13 votes in it). After this, JJJ changed the eligibility rules, so if a song off an album that was released in year x became a hit in year x+1, it was no longer eligible. I still think that's a pity, so I'm not going to adopt that rule going forward.

Here are 200-101 (will post 100-1 this evening):

And here is 100-1:

The top 4 were very hard to split indeed.

At #10 is Sigur Ros - yet again - with the lovely Hjomalind, off their compilation album, Hvarf/Heim. This will the be last time they make the Top 10 though.

Number nine is the oh-so-catchy Heart It Races by Architecture In Helsinki, with its really cool film clip.

At 8 is the wonderful slow burn of Lazy Eye by The Silversun Pickups. It meanders along then ends up in a Grungy growl, which is a compliment!

#7 is the smoooth Don't Fight It by the Panics. I enjoyed hearing it again.

Even though it was released in the UK in September 2006, Bat For Lashes/the gorgeous Natasha Khan's Fur and Gold album didn't hit Australia until well into 2007. The beautiful, haunting closing track from that album, I Saw A Light, is in at #6, while the best known track from the album, What's A Girl To Do (with it's Donnie Darko-inspired film clip) just missed the Top 10.

WA was producing some great music around this time (possibly related to its no pokies policy), and another of its bands, Gyroscope, matches their 2005 position at #5 with the great Snakeskin.

At #4 is a cover of a Kev Carmody song, based on the police killing of the Aboriginal David Gundy in Marrickville in 1989 made into a tour de force by The Drones. Powerful stuff.

Number three is the somewhat controversial actual number one in the Hottest 100, Knights Of Cydonia by Muse. Controversial because it came off a 2006 album and only won by 13 votes, after which they changed the eligibility rules. It beat out silverchair's Straight Lines, which was massively overplayed at the time but in the cold light of day, a very good song that made number 13 on my list. Anyway, the second half of 'Knights' is just awesome everytime I hear it, and the song has deservedly featured on the all time lists that have followed.

In the runners-up position is Arcade Fire's masterpiece, No Cars Go. Another song that gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it, especially towards it's big, brassy climax.

At #1 is The Presets with their anthemic My People. It was unlike anything else I had heard when I first heard it (too late for voting for it ) and still packs a punch and is just as relevant today. IIRC it came out in December, and if it had come out a month or two earlier, or later given how big The Presets would become in 2008, I've no doubt it would have finished much higher than #18 in the actual countdown, and possibly given #1 a shake.

And here is my voting list from that year. Only one of them actually made the Top 10 now, going to show how fickle my tastes are , how well some of these songs have aged against others and how much new music I have discovered since then.

Spray on pants - Kisschasy
Crocodile - Underworld
Back in your head - Tegan and Sara
When the lights went down - Clare Bowditch
Get what you want - Operator please
Empty Walls - Serj Tankian
Rising Sun - Living End (admittedly it's not their best song by any stretch. I only voted for it so they could make the 100 for an 11th straight year. They didn't )
No Pussy Blues - Grinderman
Icky Thump - White Stripes
Hjomalind - Sigur Ros

benji2, I apologise if this has been mentioned or brought to your attention in an earlier post but you came to mind when I came across a book called "The J Files Compendium" earlier today.

Thought it might help with your lists. I have only had a quick flick through the book but it has a heap of lists and the songs are all by JJJ artists pre 2002.

For example one of the lists features a top 30 duets list with songs anywhere from 1973 until the year 2000. It also features lists that aren't counting down and lists songs with the word Jesus eg. Depeche Mode - 'Personal Jesus'

Are you familiar with this book at all? Looks pretty interesting.

Not too much has stood out for me in my quick glance as being unusual other than I was surprised to see The Bangles feature in a few lists so wonder if they would feature on lists if they existed in the 80s and in one of the Trivia sections where it is about Prince it mentions that his song "The Most Beautiful Girl" was released on his own label which makes me wonder if it was also a contender for 1994.
Thanks K8

I remember listening to the J Files (and even Retroperspective before that) back in the day when Richard Kingsmill himself was hosting it, really enjoyed it. I will have to get my hands on that book!

I reckon Prince would have been a contender for most of the 1980s an even the early 1990s, though by 1994 he had lost it a bit.

Hmm, maybe pre-Manic Monday (1986) when they became 'mainstream' The Bangles might have been played and might need to be considered.

That is a great top 10!! Not familiar with The Drones and Bat For Lashes songs (but love both of the artists) so will check them out.

My top 2 were very easy this year and they are streets ahead of the rest! Vitriol still puts a smile on my face everytime I hear it and I remember being quite struck by how different LCD Soundsystem and MIA were and also being pleasantly surprised by how good In Rainbows by Radiohead was.

Also, I remember seeing at some stage a 101-200 list for 2007 (strangely remember Bodysnatchers in the 150s or so) but can't seem to find any record of it online, except that Kate Nash was 101
Yeah, knew Kate Nash was 101 (it's officially listed as such) but can't find 102-200 either. 2008 is the first year 101-200 seems to be listed, however going forward I will stick to my normal practice of only including 1-100 in my list of 200.

And - great list OBOne. Like that your runaway Top 2 made my Top 10 as well! And - there's redsunband again.
I remember reading somewhere that there was a #101-200 countdown in 2007. I would love to see it. It would be awesome if that data was released for every year especially 1993 as some of the inclusions in the top 100 seem a bit iffy, so what other "what the" inclusions could there be. I do feel Accidently Kelly Street missing the top 100 is a surprise. I am sure they would have done well in 1992 but they were still big in 1993.
Here's a link to that book https://www.harpercollins.com.au/9780733310669/ It is over 300 pages.

Of the two Bangles songs. "Walk Like an Egyptian" is in the whistle countdown and the other was not a countdown list but listed songs about cities and included their song "Going down to Liverpool" which I am not familar with.

Some of the artists interviewed in the book include AC/DC, INXS, Green Day, Prodigy, Nirvana, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Tori Amos, Smiths, REM, Spiderbait, Nick Cave, Pearl Jam, Garbage, Kiss, David Bowie, Neil Finn, PJ Harvey, Tool, Led Zeppelin, Ben Folds, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed, Powderfinger and a heap of others.

It's an interesting read and I have found out a few new things such as KLF's publicity stunt.

Thanks K8 - I have gotten hold of that book. I did read it many years ago, but I'm enjoying rediscovering it and reading it from a different POV.
And so we move onto 2008: The GFC and the big MGMT/Kings Of Leon/Presets battle.

Yep, those three all had a very big year and a big album out each. They had 6 of the Top 10 songs in the actual Hottest 100 that year and 10 songs in the Top 100 overall.

Vampire Weekend also put out a good debut album and had four tracks from it in the countdown.

Ladyhawke and Laura Marling also released their awesome debut albums, and 'Brit und Jemaine' hit our screens with Flight Of The Conchords. Bon Iver also released the sublime For Emma.

It was a bumper year for music IMO and some good songs didn't make my Top 100, hell, even Sigur Ros didn't make it, ironically with the only song of theirs that did make a Hottest 100.

This is the first year for which #101-200 is readily available, however as mentioned before I will be sticking to my usual practice of only including 1-100 only. If any of 101-200 made my list, I have included its position.

And here is my Hottest 100 for 2008:

At #100 is the semi-autobiographical No Sex For Ben by The Rapture

Number 10 is a song that was seriously unlucky not to make the actual Hottest 100, coming out right at the end of December and only making it to #102. I would like to right that! It is of course the beautiful falsetto harmonies of Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap.

Kaki King is an artist better known for her guitar playing than anything else (Dave Grohl raves about her amongst others), but she shows here that she can craft and sing a sweet tune too, Pull Me Out Alive is at #9. A great film clip too.

Pip Brown aka Ladyhawke released a great, 80s-themed debut album in 2008, and perhaps the most 80s-sounding song of them, Love Don't Live Here, comes at #8. This is the first song I heard from the album
on Triple J and I was immediately hooked. She also has 3 other tracks in the Top 200.

Speaking of great albums from 2008, The Presets released Apocalypso, which was pretty inescapable. At Number 7 in my list is a perhaps lesser known track from the album, If I Know You, which only came in at #145 in the actual countdown but I much, much prefer to some of the other tracks that did make it in to the list.

Rocking hipster beards, well before they became popular were Seattle's Band Of Horses, at number six with the sublimely beautiful No One's Gonna Love You.

Back to the electronica, at #5 are Cut Copy with their killer (and the best) track from In Ghost Colours, Lights And Music. It came in high in the actual countdown and deservedly so.

Keeping with the great Australian dance act theme are P'Nau at #4 with Embrace, featuring Ladyhawke again with her fourth appearance in the Top 100. Proper bangin' track.

At #3 is That's Not My Name by The Ting Tings, another of 2008 big acts. It's not very blokey of me to put it here I s'pose, but the song is just so catchy and I love the multilayered outro.

Nearly going back-to-back at #1, but coming in at #2, (but back to back to The Ting Tings again) are The Presets with This Boy's In Love, another of Apocalypso's best tracks. A great rhythm with a great falsetto vocal, and another iconic film clip.

Topping the list are MGMT with Time To Pretend, their first track from Oracular Spectacular and my first introduction to them. It still sounds great today - the soaring vocals and the drums still give me goosebumps.

Great list as always, I do like your #1 alot, it was the only song from the actual Hottest 100 top 20 to make my top 20. Great to see Band Of Horses finally get a jersey as well!!

If I was doing this exercise 3-4 years ago This Boy's In Love and Sweet Disposition would definitely have been top 10 but they don't rate that highly to me anymore but both still will make it

Interesting you mentioning the guitar playing of Kaki King as I definitely picked that up when listening to her previous songs you've had in your lists, look forward to checking this one out (and your #8 and #11 which I'm also not familiar with).

I think you'll find the best track from In Ghost Colours was Hearts on Fire from the 2007 list and, as for songs on the 2008 list, well we'll disagree on that as well.
So 2008. Not a great Hottest 100 (IMHO) and a poor top 10 BUT overall was a great year for music. Some really interesting music came out, especially if you love indie-pop (Vampire Weekend, Sons and Daughters, MGMT and more).

And a farewell to The Butterfly Effect who have (including 2008) made the last 8 of these lists. Sadly they won't go on to beat The Living End's actual Hottest 100 record of 10 in a row.

So what made the pointy end of my list.

Dallas Green halves his position with his old band from 2006 and slots in at #10 with Waiting, a beautiful song from his second solo album and a very different sound to Alexisonfire

And some Springsteenesque rock at #9 with The Gaslight Anthem and The '59 sound, a great song to sing along with (even when you don't know the lyrics like me).

Breaking the second album streak at #8 is L.E.S. Artistes by Santogold, an unusual sound to go with an unusual video, a song that really has grown on me over the years.

Back to second albums at #7 is Sleepwalking by Faker. I always loved their sound (starting with seeing them live in 2001) and Sleepwalking captures that sound better than the rest of Be The Twilight.

Skinny Love is my #6. It is hard to separate the story behind the album from the actual songs but it really is a beautiful and sad song given more weight by its story. I also like that his subsequent albums have moved away from the sound of this album.

#5 is One Day Like This by Elbow. I always (previous to 2008) linked them to Coldplay, they mined a similar sound, came out around the same time and in 2008 released their 4th (and probably best received album). For Coldplay it just ensured their world domination would continue but for Elbow it didn't really move the bar at all . Anyway play this one on a sunny day and try not to be uplifted.

Another band that never seemed to get the attention they deserved is Oregon's The Helio Sequence and they are in at #4 with Back To This, another great slice of indie pop.

At least Elbow and The Helio Sequence just shrugged and got on with things when the response to their albums wasn't what they wanted. When The Middle East released The Recordings of the Middle East in 2008 and it didn't gather any buzz at all, they broke up. Luckily they loaded a couple of tracks onto Triple J Unearthed before they did and once those songs started getting some airplay in 2009 they reformed. At #3 and #2 are not those two songs . If you're familiar with them though, you'll recognise the folk tinged effort of Lonely at #3 but maybe not the Sigur Ros styled post rock of Beleriand at #2. The Middle East does Middle Earth, what could be finer.

And we're left with Death Cab For Cutie at #1. The 5 minute build up of an introduction to I Will Possess Your Heart pushes it over the top for me. The album was disappointing (well half of it was), considering their previous two but this song more than made up for it.

I have a mystery to solve for any music detectives out there. I can't find any record anywhere of my #58 song One Last Time by Cut Off Your Hands. I think I downloaded it from the Triplej website as a free download (but not 100% sure). It wasn't on the voting list, there is no video on Youtube (until I created one) and no mention of the song in their discography that I can find. Thought I had the song title wrong but Shazam identifies it. So if anyone can shed some light on it for me would be grateful.
Hate it when there is no YouTube video - Prince was always a problem until recently. Well done on making the YouTube vid, I saw it and it sounds good.

Great list OBOne, and an epic #1. Looking forward to hearing the list in full.

And now to the last year of the noughties i.e. 2009

It was very much the year of the female singer-songwriter; Florence Welch (and her machine), Megan Washington, Bertie Blackman, Natasha Khan (aka Bat For Lashes), Metric, Lisa Mitchell, La Roux, Lily Allen and Sara Blasko all had albums or EPs out that year, as well as female-fronted The Gossip and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Well, that and banjo-tinged folk.

Going to try something slightly different...

I will post 100-11, then each song in the Top 10 one at a time will be added to the list along with its blurb. Gotta try and build SOME suspense.

At Number 10 is Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver with the wintry, haunting Blood Bank. I much prefer this song to his more lauded Skinny Love.

Number 9 is the closing track from Lungs, You've Got The Love from Florence and the Machine. A great showcase indeed for Ms Welch's vocals.

At zero is Eight by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. No, wait, at eight is Zero by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Probably my favourite song of theirs, it suits Karen O's vocals so well, and the rest of the band rise to the challenge.

#7 are the winners of the actual poll, and the it boys of the year. I speak of Mumford and Sons with Little Lion Man. They and this song are a bit maligned now, but fair play to them, the banjo-and-soaring-vocal bridge still sounds awesome. And that is a sentence I never thought I'd write before 2009 came around.

Another Bat For Lashes album, another extraordinary, haunting album closer about death (this time featuring 60s legend Scott Walker), another #6 finish as she did in 2007.

At number five was a (still) interesting band from the UK, The xx. They made the actual chart at #56 with Islands, but somehow this infinitely better follow-up, Crystallised, only got to #151, I assume just due to timing. Anyway, it is an amazing song worthy of the best shoegaze acts of the 90s. High praise indeed from cynical old me.

'Nombre quatre' is the crunching but very cool 1901 from France's Phoenix. Love the crunching bassline. It finished in the exact same position their other big track of the year from the Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album, Lisztomania, did in the actual Hottest 100.

Florence and The Machine's opening salvo, Dog Days Are Over, comes in at number 3. It still sounds as awesome as it did the first time I heard it and is probably my second favourite song of hers (will see the favourite in an upcoming countdown).

In the runner-up position are another of 2009's 'it' bands, Kasabian, with their many-layered, very cool and now-Leicester City theme song Fire. Didn't do The Foxes any harm in 2016 using it either.

So what could Number 1 be I hear you ask? Another bloody Sigur Ros song no doubt? Nah - it's UK rapper Dizzee Rascal of course. Yes - Benji - who seems to have it in for rap, has Dizzee at Number 1. Aided greatly by Armand Van Helden's very, very bangin' bass-driven backbeat, Bonkers even got cynical me up'n'dancing.

Looks like they got two more chances! Thanks, will fix tonight when I have the full list in front of me

I do know what #8 is, will post it now

Edit: have fixed the 'Two More Chance' issue. Usually I spot these double ups, apologies. I still need to add the actual position in 101-200 to some of those songs that made my 200, will have that fixed by 7pm. Edit: now fixed.

And #7 - #1 are posted...

Here are the songs I actually voted for in 2009 Well they're not too different I guess. Didn't vote for Sata Blasko's Night and Day as it wasn't on the list.

Nice list as always. I thought Kasabian was going to win the race for #1

Alot of the top of you list make the top of mine, your #3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12, 16, 19, 23 and 34 in particular.

I must admit I'm one of the maligners of Mumford and Sons though

Won't post it until tomorrow as I don't have the time atm (and the suspense...).

But as a taster here are the 15 songs (in alphabetical order) that just missed the cut...

OBOne ooh that is intriguing. Looking forward to your list and sorry mine took so long. It was a tricky year and only 49 of the original H100 made my 100.
What about 2009 then? There were some really good songs/albums that made the actual Hottest 100 (Florence and the Machine, The xx, Kasabian, The Middle East for a start) and some that really annoyed me (Mumford, La Roux, Art v Science, Bluejuice and Lily Allen from the top 10 for instance). Like benji2, only 49 songs from the actual 100 made my list (for the record there were 23 the same so between us there were 75 of the actual songs represented so it must have been all right).

Before presenting the 100 (top 10 blurb at the end) a few shout outs to the four artists that are represented for two different acts, Sia (#60 as herself and #32 with Flight of the Conchords), Karen O (#80 with the Kids and #33 and #21 with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Dallas Green (#63 with Alexisonfire and #17 with City and Colour and finally Justin Vernon (#88 with Volcano Choir and of course Bon Iver).

Lastly, well done to Florence Welch and her Amazing Lungs . She couldn't crack the top 10 but did have 6 songs in. Album of the year without a doubt.

14Intro - The xx
13Meet Me On The Equinox - Death Cab For Cutie
12Cosmic Love - Florence and the Machine
11Help I'm Alive - Metric
10Islands - The xx

I love the outward simplicity of this song. This was my introduction to The xx and I was immediately struck by the musical style, bare guitar and bass lines with a drum machine providing the beats and the interposing vocals. Still a favourite to this day.

9Daniel - Bat For Lashes

It is interesting that we both had 2 Bat For Lashes songs in our top 100 (and one in the Top 10) but they were 4 different songs. Shows what a great album Two Suns is. Like Islands, this song was my first introduction to Bat For Lashes and I immediately fell in love with her voice. It is just a great pop song.

8Ramona Was A Waitress - Paul Dempsey

The second greatest treatise pondering the thoughts of AI (after Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?) is Paul Dempsey's song about a guy arguing with an AI robot waitress about mortality. Only Paul Dempsey could bring this off right. His best song since Monsters in 2001.

7No You Girls - Franz Ferdinand

Leads into Franz Ferdinand's best song since their debut. This song has a great driving beat and catchy as hell chorus. Interesting to listen to Katherine Kiss Me to see the songs genesis.

6(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To - Weezer

See above (great beat catchy as hell).

5Blood Bank - Bon Iver

Agree that this is better than Skinny Love (which is still pretty ace). Recorded at the same time as, but not included on, For Emma. The song has a beautiful, sad flow that builds up slowly over the song.

4Kettering - The Antlers

Never heard it you say, well you probably have. It's been used in The 100, Fear The Walking Dead, Chuck, Sense8, Camp X-Ray and Felony among others. The beautiful piano intro, haunting vocals and rousing drums/guitar outro are just perfect. The album it comes from, Hospice, is an amazing concept album about caring for a young woman who is dying of cancer (that in reality was a metaphor for a really toxic relationship the singer had just gotten out of).

3Crystalised - The xx

Well I said that Islands was my introduction to The xx but it isn't the best song on the album, that would be Crystalised. It takes all those attributes from Islands but ramps it up better, especially in the middle of the song.

2The Darkest Side - The Middle East

Hearing this in the Hottest 100 was my introduction to The Middle East. Didn't pay too much attention but it piqued my interest enough to download it from the triplejunearthed website not long after. I kept coming back to it, hearing more every time I listened. A beautifully crafted song with each of 7 members musically fit together amazingly (no drums as well) and great vocal harmonies. Bonus points for being the only song I know to mention Sim City!

1Blood - The Middle East

But it doesn't even come close to Blood, my favourite song of all time! Like The Darkest Side, it wasn't immediate but I kept coming back and discovering more and more. The lyrics in particular I love about this song and the rousing outro as well (used in many movies). Basically, this song hits all the right notes for me!
Interesting list OB!

I must admit that The Middle East passed me by at the time, but I'm discovering them in a big way now.

Never heard The Antlers song Looking forward to hearing it and recognising it.

Interesting that we have different Bat For Lashes songs in our Top 10. Deservedly so..

Also glad that 6 tracks off Lungs made it in. I didn't manage that myself! Ms Welch was the discovery of the year for me in a strong field.

Apologies, as I know this theead is ppst 90s but your 90s thread was closed and thought this was worth bringing up. Almost every one of these one hit wonders made a Hottest 100 countdown. I question Sonia Dada's inclusion as he was far from being a one hit wonder. Was he included because he featured and was payed on JJJ in 1992? I get Chet Faker/Vance joy vibes (with an accentl from him.
I don't remember Sonia Dada ever being played on JJJ, nor he/they ever having another hit. In fact that was around the time I started listening to JJJ in earnest, in order to get away from the likes of Sonia Dada!

Anyone, especially you K8, is welcome to bump the old 70s-80s-90s threads linked at the beginning of this one.

I'd also query Crash Test Dummies being included as a) they had another at least one other hit (Afternoons and Coffeespoons) and b) JJJ had played them before Mmm Mmm....

Also don't recall Sonia Dada ever being played on JJJ.
Into the new decade we go: 2010, featuring 'featurings'

Yes, the 'feat.' abbreviation, which is featuring heavily in HiJinx's current QLVG game, came into its own this year.

Not because of that, but the actual countdown is regarded is one of the weakest ones, so this list was a challenge.

Laura Marling, Arcade Fire, Children Collide, Marina and The Diamonds and Massive Attack, Washington and even Angus and Julia Stone were the pick of the album releases for me.

At #10 is Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People. This song was EVERYWHERE in in the first half 2011, but it was first released at the end of 2010 and probably would have finished a lot higher than #32 in the actual countdown if it was released a month earlier or later. The lyrics make me a bit uneasy (though they're supposed to be a pisstake). It's still very catchy.
10PUMPED UP KICKS Foster the People832

Speaking of catchy songs, at #9 is the runner up in the actual countdown, Little Red's Rock It. Still the 'feelgood' song of that summer, still sounds good.

9ROCK IT Little Red72

At eight is Cloud Control's jangling-then-stomping ode to Mary Jane, There's Nothing In The Water We Can't Fight. Another catchy gem and still their best song.

8THERE'S NOTHING IN THE WATER WE CAN'T FIGHT Cloud Control618

As alluded to in OBs post below, number 7 is amongst the tracks just missing out on his list. It is the sweet rock styling of Dead Letter Circus with One Step. A song that summed up my relationship at the time with an awesome vocal by Kim Benzie. Thought it '#shouldabeenhigher' than number 65 in the actual countdown

7ONE STEP Dead Letter Circus565

In one of my lists for only the second time is Boy George (the other was in 1995 with Funtime) - supplying a beautiful, poignant and very believable
to his real life vocal to Mark Ronson and The Business International's Somebody To Love Me. It's at Number 6, four places higher than it's well deserved Top 10 place in the actual countdown.

6SOMEBODY TO LOVE ME Mark Ronson and The Business International feat. Boy George410

Number 5 was a song from a 2010 album that was released as single in 2011 and was contoversially excluded from the 2011 Hottest 100 voting list, being deemed a 2010. Ok JJJ I'll call it a 2010 song too. The song is - Loveless by Children Collide, their rockin' My-Bloody-Valentine- inspired masterpiece. Even their one take filmclip is great.

5LOVELESS Children CollideNANA

Sparkadia (by this stage just Alexander Burnett) are at #4 with their/his divine Talking Like I'm Falling Down Stairs. Alexander sings like he was gliding on a river gracefully, and the instrumentation is great too.

4TALKING LIKE I'M FALLING DOWN STAIRS Sparkadia324

Third from the top of my list is the song that came third from the bottom of the actual Hottest 100 - the beautiful Spanish Sahara by The Foals. It's like a divine mix of Bon Iver and Sigur Ros, and anyone who has been following my threads will know that I rate both very highly indeed.

3SPANISH SAHARA The Foals298

Number 2 is Dance The Way I Feel by Ou Est Le Swimmimg Pool.
Lifeline's number is 13 11 14

2DANCE THE WAY I FEEL Ou Est Le Swimming Pool13

My Hottest 100 closer is the closer of Heligoland and of their live set. It is the epic Atlas Air from Massive Attack. For best effect, have a light show going in the background. Even without that, it puts me in a nice trance each time. Nineteen years after they were runner-up in my list and 12 years after they topped it, they're at #1.

1ATLAS AIR Massive AttackNANA

Nice one!

Great top 10 in particular. Heard a rumour that Alex Burnett is working on a new Sparkadia album, Never quite got Rock It though

Did find my voting list as well, we voted for two songs the same and three bands!

Angus And Julia Stone - Big Jet Plane
Interpol - Lights
Jezabels, The - Mace Spray
Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill
National, The - Bloodbuzz Ohio
Tame Impala - Solitude Is Bliss
Crystal Castles - Not In Love {Ft. Robert Smith}
Deerhunter - Desire Lines
Best Coast - Boyfriend
Delorean - Seasun
"My highs are high
My lows are low"

Thus sang Best Coast about the 2010 Hottest 100. I don't feel it was a particularly strong one (but still have 49 songs from it in my list) and a bit top-heavy but overall 2010 was a pretty good year for music although I didn't listen to Triple J much. Some cracker albums were released by Best Coast, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Foals, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Deerhunter and Angus and Julia Stone.

Biffy Clyro match The Butterfly Effects record of appearing in 8 of my lists (and they just missed out for 2009).

Shout out to Girl Talk for the idea of mashing Drake with A Flock Of Seagulls. Brilliant! Also to Bring Me The Horizon for having the lowest selling #1 album in Aria history (since been "beaten").

10Glitter - No Age

The best shoegaze song of the 2010s. It's not the pretty 90s shoegaze of Ride, Slowdive or Chapterhouse but the buzzing chainsaw 80s shoegaze of the Jesus and Mary Chain and early My Bloody Valentine.

9Runaway {Ft. Pusha T} - Kanye West

Kanye gets himself a bad rep (deservedly as he is an idiot) but when he's on top form it's incredible. There is so much going on in this song, which coincidentally is the (equal) longest to appear in a Hottest 100. He also picks guest vocalists really well and the Pusha-T feature works really well here.

8Lights - Interpol

This was released as a free download in advance of the release of Interpol's 4th album. Of anything they have done since the 1st album (which is one of my faves of all time) this song captures that sound the best (dark and driving). I got very excited about the new album, which you'll notice I didn't include in the great albums of 2010 above . Anyway, seriously great song and seriously weird film clip.

7Pumped Up Kicks - Foster The People

Seriously great pop song. Catchy as all-hell. My 15 year old daughter can't believe it isn't my #1 (and the general lack of K-Pop as well).

Trivia for you. When the 2011 Hottest 100 was being played (Australia Day 2012) Pumped Up Kicks was the Aria #1 single. A benji2 said if it was released a month later it would have been an interesting battle for the 2011 #1 against the juggernaut of Goyte.

6On Melancholy Hill - Gorillaz

There is a real sense of Melancholy in this one, no guest vocals just Damon Albarn. It tugs at something inside. Really low tempo for Gorillaz and it works well.

5Solitude Is Bliss - Tame Impala

A stompingly good track this one. Another great pop song. Really drives along. When this didn't make the top 10 I realised the Hottest 100 no longer made any sense .

4Ready To Start - Arcade Fire

Another great album from Arcade Fire and this is (for me) the highlight. The changes of tempo really work for me and push the song along.

3Not In Love {Ft. Robert Smith} - Crystal Castles

I do like Crystal Castles (they appear without Bob in 2007 and 2009 as well) but the addition of that very distinctive voice really elevates this song above anything else they have done.

2Bloodbuzz Ohio - National, The

This song was my introduction to The National and I immediately fell in love with them and that voice! High Violet is probably my favourite album from 2010, no weak songs on it and some really great ones.

1Spanish Sahara – Foals

I fist heard this song when it appeared in the Hottest 100 and remember staring at the radio about half way through and saying, who is this, it's brilliant. Subsequently, I have all their albums and am quite the fan.

Having said that, this song is not typical of Foals. Most of their work has a pop/funk sound, which I really like but this is different. It is more subdued, it gradually picks up steam until it's glorious release.
Great list OB! A worthy number 1.

Love me some shoegaze so will check out Glitter.

Yes, was disappointed that Solitude Is Bliss only made Number 33 given how big Innerspeaker was as an album. It's slid back slightly since 2010 but not much.

Hello everyone

It's 2011 time - the year of Dubstep, Planking and the Occupy movement.

The actual Hottest 100 list was the best of the 21st Century and one of the best of all time IMO. Sixty songs from this list made my Top 100.

Florence and The Machine released a cracking album, as did M83, Bon Iver and Gotye and a young lady from the US named Lana Del Rey appeared on the scene.

Without any further ado as I have to go out in 2 mins, here are #200-101:

At Number 10 is Adalita's ode to her late bandmate Dean Turner, The Repairer. She is more heartfelt than even before, and she still manages to rock out a few times in what is otherwise a funereal song. as only she can.
10THE REPAIRER AdalitaNANA

Ah-ah oh-oh wo-oh. Coming in at nine is the song that started it all for Melbourne's Husky with their sublime, heartfelt folky breakup song History's Door. I happen to be wearing a checked shirt as I type this too, just like they were in the filmclip Says something about my tastes I'm sure.
9HISTORY'S DOOR Husky778

#8 is a duet. No, not that one you might normally associate with 2011, but Sydney's Elizabeth Rose debuting and teaming up with RUFUS to bring us the insanely catchy Stars Ago. It still sounds great without RUFUS' input too (though better with).
8STARS AGO Elizabeth Rose feat. RUFUSNANA

At #7 is another tribute song to a departed colleague and friend, Bon Iver's ode to Heath Ledger and his hometown, Perth. It somehow evokes the remoteness, sparseness and the beauty of the place and is one of his best songs.
7PERTH Bon Iver666

Coming in at #6 is the third of M83's singles off the Hurry Up, We're Dreaming album. I speak of the wonderfully sparse, glacial and dare I say Sigur-Ros-like Wait. It really needed the intergalactic filmclip that goes with it to do justice to the song.
6WAIT M83NANA

At #5 is my first introduction to the sweet Nancy-Sinatra-like voice of Lana Del Rey, the great Video Games, and what an excellent showcase for her voice it was, with the stripped-back piano and orchestral background. Unlucky to finish at #6 in the actual countdown but it was a very strong field.
5VIDEO GAMES Lana Del Rey56

Sorry Hottest 100 party people, number 4 is a bit of a 'slowie' too. It's Hanging On, Active Child's ode to trout fishing if the film clip is anything to go by. Or a crumbling relationship. I'll let you decide. Anyway, it is another beautiful, heartfelt song
4HANGING ON Active Child446

It came in at Number 1 in the Hottest 100, Hot 50 videoclips, ARIA charts, Billboard charts and various other charts. It has 'only' come in at Number 3 in mine. Yes it's that duet I mentioned earlier, Gotye and Kimbra's Somebody That I Used To Know (aka STIUTK). Now that seven years have passed and it's no longer being overplayed everywhere, it stands up really well as a work of art, a great piece of music and even a great pop single.
3SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW Gotye31

Runner-up is in my opinion Florence and The Machine's best song, her ode to another departed soul, Sylvia Plath - What The Water Gave Me, the opening track from Ceremonials. The faster paced songs always bring the best out of her super-strong voice.
2WHAT THE WATER GAVE ME Florence and The Machine242

Which means, at #1, is M83 with the mighty Midnight City, another 'goosebump' song, especially when the sax kicks in during the outro. I have always loved everything about it, even when it was getting a lot of airplay seven years ago. It makes an old 80s fan like me very happy.

While we wait somewhat patiently for the last few songs to be revealed, I'll post the songs that just missed the cut for my 100. The first 6 are 101-106 (was really hard to cut down from 106 ) and the others unordered,

Great stuff!

Top 3 is great (and #5 for that matter). I was shocked that What the Water Gave Me wasn't the highest of the Florence songs in the actual Hottest 100 (but had already established the Hottest 100 didn't make sense after the Solitude is Bliss controversy in 2010 ).

Never knew Perth was about Heath Ledger! Will have to re-listen with that in mind.

Interesting to see Hearts To Break at #70. Nathan (the lead singer and basically Faker) was so disappointed with the album he released it for free. I didn't think it was that bad but certainly not up to the standards of the previous 2. Dangerous was close to the 100 and Graffiti On The Skyline also was on my longer shortlist.
The short: 2011 rulez

The long: 2011 was one of the best years for music in recent times. It was a perfect storm of lots of OBOne favourites releasing really good albums (The Middle East, Sparkadia, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, Mogwai (an EP as well), Lykke Li, Boy & Bear, Elbow, Arctic Monkeys, Laura, City and Colour) AND lots of new artists (or artists I discovered for the first time) that will feature in future years (The Smith Street Band, Bombay Bicycle Club, Kurt Vile, Grimes, RÜFÜS (I actually voted for all of these 5 in future hottest 100s), Lana Del Rey, Grouplove, Emma Louise, San Cisco, The Vaccines, St Vincent).

As for the actual 100, only 43 songs made it in but all of the top 10 did, which is the first time this has happened.

Had a very long shortlist for this and the last few cuts were hard but here is my fave 100 songs of 2011. Well done to Art Vs Science for sneaking in after being #101 in 2008 (another great year).

14I Follow Rivers - Lykke Li
13Fragile Bird - City and Colour
12Holocene - Bon Iver
11Deep Water - Middle East, The
10The Colour Of The Earth - PJ Harvey

Kicking of the top 10 is a track from PJ Harvey's best album since Rid Of Me (18 years before). It is a concept album about war and conflict. For alot of the album you can forget about this as the music is great but this song (co-incidentally the last song?) is the most obvious and personal story about war and loss. Mick Harvey shares the vocal duties and tells the story of Louis, an ANZAC soldier killed and whose body is never found

9Brother - Matt Corby

Another sad song. My introduction to the amazing voice of Matt Corby. His unusual vocal style really suits this song (and in fact the acoustic version he played before doing Like A Version is just as good).

8Hunger Song - Middle East, The

And we come to my favourite album of the 2010s (so far), "I Want That You Are Always Happy" by The Middle East. It can be a difficult album to get into at first as it is a bit all over the place and incoherent but that is because there is so much going on stylistically, dirges, ballads, elegies and much more but it really rewards closer examination. Towards the back end there are 3 thigh slapping, good ole boy, hoedowns in a row, of which this is the third and best. In true Country music fashion, even though it is really up tempo musically, the lyrics are depressing.

7The Words That Maketh Murder - PJ Harvey

Just an absolute tune. Really like the autoharp sound and the 60s surf sound. The mix of the uptempo music and shocking lyrics about a war zone are quite incongruous and you find yourself singing along lines like "arms and legs were in the trees".

6Video Games - Lana Del Rey

Another introduction to a unique voice and style in the torchlight styling of Lana Del Rey. Was very different to anything else out there in 2011, mining the 50s and 60s sound (and yes Nancy Sinatra).

5Shuffle - Bombay Bicycle Club

After 5 fairly dark or down songs comes the light! Shuffle is amazingly breezy and bright both musically and lyrically. I particularly like the repetitive driving piano, which was taken from an old jazz record apparently.

4Mary - Sparkadia

A large part of the appeal of this song comes from my kids (I have three daughters). 2012 was probably the first year that they started to have some interest in the songs I like and request them when we were driving. The sing alongs to Mary were quite epic and always come to mind when I hear this song (runner up spot to I Follow Rivers). Having said that, it stands on its own as a great song with Alex Burnett's unique voice really driving this one. I hope the rumours that he is working on a new album are correct.

3Lonely Boy - Black Keys, The

I thought I has The Black Keys figured out! Had been a fan for a few years before this but was blown away when this dropped. It was late in the year and I had actually voted before I heard it and immediately wanted to change my votes. Just a great song (another good sing along). The video is great as well.

2As I Go To See Janey - Middle East, The

And a waltz! It is really rare (to me anyway) to hear a 3/4 time signature in modern music. Golden Brown was the last that comes to mind. Apart from that, this is a really beautiful song musically and lyrically. There's a real sense of longing and loss in the song.

1Land Of The Bloody Unknown - Middle East, The

Well I did say it was my favourite album of the 2010s so basically my fave song from it will be my #1! A 100 position improvement from the actual countdown. It is probably the most straight-forward song on the album, mining their folk/country sound. I particularly love the slide guitar and the point where the tempos ramps up after 1 minute. I can really get lost in the music, especially with my headphones on.

Thanks OB

I think What The Water Gave Me came out relatively early in the year (around May) and she had more recent singles, so that put it at a disadvantage.

I didn't think the Faker album was THAT bad either I found Hearts To Break quite catchy.

Looking forward to your list.
And my votes for 2011. When I Saw Written On The Forehead on the voting list for 2010 I moved it there (#15) as I knew fitting in another great song into 2011 would be hard.

Florence & The Machine - What The Water Gave Me
Faker - Dangerous
PJ Harvey - The Words That Maketh Murder
PJ Harvey - Written On The Forehead
Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know {Ft. Kimbra}
Foster The People - Helena Beat
