----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fifth studio album for Drake titled "Scorpion" beats four other strong new entries to take out the top spot on the ARIA Albums Chart this week.

"Scorpion" becomes the 829th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2018) and the 680th for ARIA (1983 to 2018) plus the 472nd to debut at No.1 and now the seventh for the Republic Record Label, plus also the rapper's second No.1 album locally after "Views" spent a week at the top on the 9th of May in 2016. This is the fifteenth chart-topping album for 2018 and thirteenth for the year to spend a single at the top (so far). Drake's new album has also taken out first week honors at No.1 in England, New Zealand, Norway, The Netherlands and Ireland (so far). As this album is a double set, with 22 of the 25 tracks charting on the singles chart, it's the first time since "The Very Best" for INXS (7 wks from 17th of Feb, 2014) that a double album has gone to No.1 (that wasn't a soundtrack), and the last studio double album at No.1 was "Stadium Arcadium" for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in May of 2006 (3 wks).

Drake has now had two No.1's this decade with a tally (so far) of two weeks, joining other acts for this decade with two-by-two as Kylie Minogue, Parkway Drive, The Arctic Monkeys and Kanye West (all during 2018) and also Katy Perry, Madonna, Sia, Ariana Grande, Flume, Nick Cave, Lorde and The Weeknd. This is the first time that the word 'Scorpion' has appeared in a No.1 album title, with the two previous albums with that title charting being for Eve in October 2001 (HP-92) and 'The Scorpion King' soundtrack (HP-85, April 2002). The new No.1 album also becomes the 31st by a Canadian artist to hit the top here (solo, duo or group) and is the 232nd chart-topping album by a solo Male Artist (local or overseas). Of the six Canadian Solo Male Artists to have made it to No.1 in Australia Drake is now equal with both Bryan Adams and The Weeknd at two #1's apiece, while ahead of him are Justin Bieber (3 #1's) and Michael Buble (5 #1 albums), while Shawn Mendes scored his first a month ago.

The fourth studio album for Florence + the Machine entitled "High as Hope" comes in at No.2 this week becoming the groups fourth Top 3 album as their last two releases both went to No.1 and their debut set "Lungs" peaked at No.3 in August of 2010 (released July 2009), followed at No.3 by the third Top 3 album for local rock-pop act The Rubens entitled "Lo La Ru" after their 2015 second album "Hoops" made it to No.2 and their debut self-titled set debuted and peaked at No.3 in September of 2012. Last years Gorillaz album "Humanz" debuted and peaked at No.4, now this years sixth album "The Now Now" also lands at No.4 becoming the groups fourth Top 4 album in Australia, they once scored a No.1 album in March of 2010 with "Plastic Beach".

There are only four albums left from last weeks Top 10 still within the ten, as "The Greatest Showman" soundtrack drops down to its lowest position so far of No.5 and also down to it's lowest spot is the 70 week running Top 10 (69 weeks within the Top 5 too) Ed Sheeran third album "÷ (Divide)" is down a single spot to No.6. Post Malone scores a tenth week within the Top 10 with his "Beerbongs & Bentleys" set, down four to No.8 and the XXXTentacion second album "?" falls back down seven places to No.9 (and holds at No.1 in Canada for a third broken week at the top).

In 1988 the debut album for Guns N' Roses entitled "Appetite for Destruction" climbed to No.7 in October of that year (it debuted in mid-August) and now a thirtieth anniversary edition titled 'Locked N' Loaded' has returned the set back to it's former peak of No.7 this week, while the sixth and final entry to the Top 10 this week is new at No.10, "Gravity" for Bullet for My Valentine, the sixth studio album for the Welsh heavy metal act and now their fifth chart and Top 10 entry, as their second album onwards has hit the Top 5 until this new set.

can anyone else remember the last time a double album went to No.1 in Australia (that wasn't a soundtrack).
Does the INXS best of count?

Otherwise the first standard double album that comes to mind is Stadium Arcadium. There's also the Traveling Wilburys collection a year sooner than that.

Wonder what the rationale is with Drake's entries. All but 3 tracks on Scorpion made the cut, though all had enough chart sales to make it. I get leaving out Survival since it's basically an intro, but Elevate & Sandra's Rose aren't as obvious as exclusions, I'll need to listen again in a moment and see, but surely they could have left Ratchet Happy Birthday in a ditch instead
wow Love Lies has considerably 1-upped Fight For You's top 10 effect run

2 songs 21 spots apart (God's Plan and Jocelyn Flores) switching places feels like a very rare coincidence.
thanks for the LP info Hijinx.

Chartifacts and entry info updated, busy week thanks to Drake's massive intake of singles, that's why I'm an hour later than normal.
Another moderately interesting fact is that Drake is I believe only the 3rd solo rapper to score multiple #1 albums, after Eminem & Kanye (who only pulled it off a few weeks ago).
Sheesh, what has ARIA become? I probably would have been better not to take a look at this chart.

The biggest thing that sucks with the way this chart has become is it truly robs songs or reaching a fair and accurate peak position.

For example take out all of Drake and the Xxx rapper (whatever he is called that was shot dead) songs out and how many songs could have scored a better peak position?

This is America is falling quickly but with a good 10 songs bumping it down it should still be in the top 40.

Perfect is going to rank in the top 5 biggest sellers of the year because it's Ed Sheeran. I am finding him over rated and he isn't at all but our charts are making me feel that way about him.

I used to be so excited for the weekly charts and now I couldn't even tell you half the songs.
To be fair a lot of those peaks are balanced out by the fact that there are a bunch of songs that are unfairly not charting. There were like 10 songs missing last week.
The streaming yay/nay debate is getting very tired, but I do hate the imbalance that shows up on weeks like this. If someone streams the entire Drake album, that counts towards the album chart, as it should, but it also counts as a stream for every song for the singles chart, which it shouldn't. Those aren't streams because a single is popular, they're people listening to the album. Someone buying the Drake album digitally doesn't have that count as an individual sale for every song, as well as for the album.

The double dipping also affects the album chart unfairly; if someone streams just their favourite few Drake songs, those again count towards both the singles and albums charts, but someone buying just a couple of songs digitally counts towards only the singles chart, as it should.

Correct me if I have any facts wrong there.

It may not be possible depending on how the data is presented, but I think any full album streams should only count to the album chart, and would result in less clogging of the singles chart in weeks like this. You can argue that this singles chart is showing what's popular, and that's true, but it's being affected by album popularity when it's a singles/songs chart, and should only be affected by the popularity of each song. My thoughts make sense to me anyway.
Yep, totally agree BZ, so many of Drake's streams would've just been people listening to the song once just bc its on the album and not coming back to it the whole week which shouldn't count towards the singles chart. Only songs that are clearly doing well themselves like Don't Matter to Me and Nonstop should be counted towards the singles chart

Also I absolutely hate Tyga but Taste should be getting close to the top 10 but its not even top 100

Oh wow, Didn't even know about XXXTentacion, that's horrible, so young weird i never saw nothing on social media that day about it.
Agree re: single/album chart streaming double dipping. I would say, if it could be measured, any consecutive streaming of two tracks from the same album makes those 'album streams', which therefore don't count towards the singles chart. Where possible, artificial rules should be avoided (is the Australian chart being swamped by Drake songs this week better or worse than him having three songs debut in the UK top 5 and all other tracks, including the two big hit singles, arbitrarily disqualified?) - but if 'albums' and 'singles' charts are still meaningfully different things, that distinction has to be preserved in the way streams are counted somehow.
I just think deny album tracks charting all-together. Promo/official/radio singles should be eligible and that’s that. All this clutter is starting to remind me of when X Factor and Voice were clogging up the singles chart and even getting a #1 single out of it.

My only issue is the singles chart really not being a singles chart. No issue with an album track here or there charting, but I think there will be no way for them to categorise the streaming data in a way that will make the charts more consistent again, so I just think ARIA should start to crack down on what CAN enter. Official singles, radio singles, promo singles and not album tracks that will float around based on pure streaming.

In 10 years time when certain artists will have their “hits” compilation out can already guarantee they wouldn’t be including these album tracks that charted highly based purely on them not really being big hits, just high charters.

I check the charts every week out of curiosity, but I’m well past the point of actually caring anymore. It’ll be interesting to see what the Australian record companies do with their roster of Aussie artists as its already looking pretty thin on releases as it is so I feel like now the mainstream pop acts are gonna be relinquished to mother’s day covers albums for eternity with original material scattered round in between tribute albums.

ARIA's first chart is dated July 10 1983, 35 years ago this week
