Part 3: http://www.australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=50685

If you are new to this thread, the deal is that every Sunday at midday, I record the current iTunes chart and note the highest selling songs which are at least 2 years old. There is also a bubbling under chart which features the highest selling songs which are at least 2 years old, but have also not yet cracked the main chart.

We start off the 4th year of this chart with one of the less eventful charts in recent memory. Cold Chisel's surprise #1 "Flame Trees" has retained the top spot for a second week in a row. They had some mid-week competition from Michael Bolton but he seems to have slipped back a bit in the past few days, though still making an impressive #2 finish. A new peculiarity of the Cold Chisel story here, "When The War Is Over" climbs to #3, which means "Khe Sanh" is only their 3rd highest peaking song on this chart now, and falls out of the top 10 this week. Darius Rucker returns to his #8 peak and most of the rest of the top 10 is former #1's. Songs not quite getting new peaks is a good theme for this week, in addition to "Wagon Wheel", we also have "Dreams", "Say You Won't Let Go" & "Walking In Memphis" having near misses. Dean Lewis does have some luck, improving the peak of "Waves" by 1 position to #16, he has the only song in the whole top 30 to not reach the top 10. The release of his new album brings Paul Kelly back into the chart for the first time in several months, but then you might also want to attribute the fact that I just posted the song in the Stats thread, because "No Diggity" & "Jessie's Girl" also re-enter. Also making a big re-entry is "Time To Say Goodbye", not because of the Jason Derulo song I imagine, but because Bocelli performed at BEATURIIICHIII's Royal Wedding. That's not the only VN reference I can make either, because Rachel Platten has a '99 9' on her row of numbers. In a good week for former very low charters, Adele improves 50 places to #49 with a re-entry for "When We Were Young", while The Screaming Jets also finally improve the peak of "Better", which with its #100 peak was actually the very bottom song on my cumulative stats. There is only 1 debut this week, with Elton John finally getting into the main chart with "Bennie and the Jets".

I have an error to report but fortunately it's one of the least significant ones there could be. In fact it only impacts last week's Bubbling Under chart, as I left off LP (not to be confused with members of MS MR or Run The Jewels) and her song "Lost On You". Anyway, leading the pack this week is Tash Sultana, who was very close to the main chart, "Jungle" would have been #103 theoretically. R.E.M.'s long runner "Losing My Religion" gets a new peak, while the Jackson 5 also re-enter at a new top 10 height for "I Want You Back". There are a few relatively fresh debuts this week, and there could be more next week as some big hits become eligible. Leading the pack we've got the first time in the chart for Marshmello's whose breakout hit "Alone" has a good sales week. Panic! At The Disco's promo tour has been relatively silent on this chart, but they sneak two debuts here, though not the most obvious cuts from two of their recent albums.

Oct 21st

It is finally time for the least surprising #1 outside of Christmas. It's been known months in advance that the Queen biopic that just happened to be called "Bohemian Rhapsody" was coming and it will shock nobody to see that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is in fact #1 again. In saying that, for this week at least, it almost wasn't #1 as very close behind was a debut for Peter Gabriel. "Solsbury Hill" is being used in a coffee ad starring George Clooney and means that Peter Gabriel can claim to being the Genesis member with the highest appearance on this chart, and he's one of 3 that have an impact this week. Taylor Swift has a good week and nearly gets "Shake It Off" back to its #3 peak. The other noteworthy top 10 news this week is another debut, this time a song that only just became eligible today, as it marks the 2 year anniversary of Lady Gaga's "Joanne" album. I've been wondering if "Million Reasons" might eventually make this chart but I didn't account for Lady Gaga having a monstrously successful soundtrack at the very moment it became eligible, so it easily comes in at #7. Elsewhere, the general public are evidently very enthusiastic about Makoto from Persona 5 because there are 8 entries in the top 100 for Queen this week. Only one of them gets a new peak with "Another One Bites The Dust" up to #38, although it's also the first time in the main chart for "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". There are a lot of modern new peaks this week too. Dean Lewis continues to creep up slowly with "Waves" up another spot to #15, while recent entrants for Bruno Mars & Bishop Briggs come charging back in new form. After just missing a new peak last week, James Arthur is now in the top 50 with "Say You Won't Let Go". On the older side of things, Fleetwood Mac have a big new peak for "Everywhere" up to #30, similar story for Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" which previously just snuck in at #99 but is now up to #24. Making big waves this week is Charli XCX who is just about to start a tour here. Surprisingly her highest entry here is "Break The Rules", ahead of a re-entry for "Boom Clap" and a debut for "I Love It". Another former bubbler debuts too with Boney M.'s "Rasputin" giving the group their first non-Christmas entry on the main chart. And finally of course I have to mention that our prime minister's website was not renewed a few days ago meaning that someone was able to buy it for $50 in an auction. And what do you do when you have Scott Morrison's website at your disposal? Of course you make it play the song "Scotty Doesn't Know" from EuroTrip. So shout out to Matt Damon, or more actually the band Lustra for getting their first entry here. I also have to note that Ed Sheeran's "Photograph" has dropped out for the first time ever, having charted every single week since being eligible 2 years ago. It wasn't even high enough to be on the Bubbling Under chart this week amazingly.

We nearly had a full clear out of the Bubbling Under chart this week. It was also yet another round of misfortune for Shakira with "Hips Don't Lie" coming ever so close again to a debut. She does however overtake Dire Straits again for the outright 2nd longest runner, making no progress to taking over the leader though because Jason Mraz is back again too. Foreigner have the only song holding on from last week, and they also have the highest debut, courtesy of "Waiting For A Girl Like You". In the world of new peaks, we've got Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift and Florida Georgia Line gracing the top 5 for the first time with their respective tracks. There's another debut that just became eligible today also, Clean Bandit's #1 hit "Rockabye" making an instant impact. Speaking of #1 hits, we've got a new peak for Cheap Trick's "The Flame", and also two more debuts, with Mike + The Mechanics possibly getting some tangential splash back from Peter Gabriel, and also Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" obviously paying off from QLVG. Cher has a relatively recent debut with her 2013 track "Woman's World", while Lady Gaga has another entry with the title track to "Joanne". Speaking of Gaga, Queen enter with..."Radio Ga Ga", while Broods have a less expected debut for their 2016 track "Heartlines".

Well I opened up the iTunes chart today expecting nothing out of the ordinary and that is not what I got. It would be entirely reasonable to believe that Queen would retain #1 with the film release right around the corner, in fact it improved from #85 on iTunes last week to #51, but that still has "Bohemian Rhapsody" down to #3 because as it turns out, everyone and their mother was doing benefit shows this weekend. Because of that we have a new #1 and it actually comes from Birds of Tokyo who played at the Closing Ceremony of the Invictus Games last night. I'm assuming they just played 2 songs because they've had huge boosts primarily for their current single and also "Lanterns" which originally peaked at #10 on this chart and hasn't been seen since 2016, but now boasts a #1 title. Fellow 'an' noun singles "Anchor" and "Plans" are just shy of the Bubbling Under chart, while the more recent "I'd Go With You Anywhere" just sneaks into the main chart. Also playing at this ceremony was Colin Hay, for which "Down Under" re-enters, Starley who debuts both original & remix of "Call On Me", and Aloe Blacc who has quite a bit of action. He's never been credited on the main chart because of vintage Avicii, and only previously bubbled under with "I Need A Dollar". He solves both of those issues at once as his own solo version of "Wake Me Up" and "I Need A Dollar" both enter in the top 10, the former just above Avicii's version. "The Man" also enters in the top 20. But that wasn't the only show that happened as there was also a farmer benefit concert held. It was a pretty stacked line up to show here, as we have Daryl Braithwaite, John Farnham, Jon Stevens, Guy Sebastian, The Veronicas & Andrew Farriss showing up here because of it. Daryl also performed "The Horses" at the Cox Plate because of course he did, and if not for surprisingly strong competition would be #1 this week. He'll have to settle with his collection of other entries this week. Jon Stevens perhaps had the best benefit, he even has a new single in the top 10 on iTunes right now, but Noiseworks' only recent debut "Take Me Back" is now up to #4, with a solo version debuting lower down while "Touch" also debuts in the top 20. He's also cluttering up the Bubbling Under chart big time. John Farnham perhaps has his best week though "You're The Voice" can't get a new peak. He does however have 3 debuts alongside it. The Veronicas get what is only their 2nd ever main chart entry with "Untouched". Conrad Sewell didn't technically perform at the show but I think he was part of a pre-show thing, and notably "Remind Me" debuts. To return to Queen though, they just keep climbing and I'm expecting big things next week. "We Are The Champions" and "Another One Bites The Dust" score new peaks, while the debuts keep coming, this week "Radio Ga Ga" doing so. It's not all uplifting news as Tony Joe White debuts with "Polk Salad Annie" in the wake of his passing earlier this week. Andra Day's "Rise Up" is back in the chart thanks to its usage on Doctor Who this past week. Taylor Swift tour hype continues to boom seeing a big collection of her songs back in the chart, including "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" which hasn't been in the chart since 2015, and also there's a debut for "Style". Halloween continues to be more and more poorly timed for this thread each year, but that hasn't stopped "Monster Mash" for returning 4 years in a row now (though "Thriller" and "Time Warp" are absent). Charli XCX proves last week not a fluke as "Break The Rules" and "Boom Clap" both score new peaks. With this big clutter of a chart, it's been difficult for the heavy hitters, and notably Disturbed who hadn't left the top 20 at all since debuting over a year ago, are down to an all new low of #32.

Bubbling Under is largely an extension of all the main chart action, though what looked to be a random debut for Broods is shaping into something more as "Heartlines" takes a big jump into the top 5. We have an entire top 4 of Jon & Johns because John Denver scores another entry, this time with "Thank God I'm A Country Boy". Queen have even more potential debuts as "You're My Best Friend" hits a new peak and "I Want It All" debuts. The Weeknd returns with a new peak for "Starboy", on a noteworthy week because "I Feel It Coming" has just now become eligible and debuts a little lower down. Dire Straits snatch back 2nd place for longest runner after Shakira took it off of them last week while there are more curious debuts for Jennifer Lopez's "Let's Get Loud" and The Prodigy's "Breathe", the latter unlucky to never benefit from that time earlier this decade it was used on an ad.

Thanks for the chart as always.

I was wondering why all these Australian songs got boosts yesterday.
Looking forward to seeing how Queen perform from thursday as they have now got 3 songs in the iTunes Top 100.
Nov 4th

Queen. If when I said that, you were hoping for Queen Bey, I regret to inform you that everyone was instead faking it to "Bohemian Rhapsody" (there is some Bowie though). With the film out, it's in complete control of the top 10 and most of the top 20 as well. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is back at #1, everything else is getting a new peak, except for "Under Pressure" but this is certainly the highest it's been when the climb is associated with Queen and not Bowie. There are a good handful of debuts too. Some Freddie Mercury solo appearances, notably UK #1 hit "Barcelona" with Montserrat Caballe who died quite recently. As for Queen, it's a cavalcade of every other song of theirs you can think of and then some. The highest non-Queen entry is Lady Gaga's "Million Reasons" and the highest not related to a motion picture is Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off". Her touring impact is somewhat stifled with a crowded chart. Charli XCX on the other hand does pretty well, with big climbs for new leader "Boom Clap" and "Break The Rules" with "I Love It" re-entering in the top 40 as well. The only other new peak this week comes from Moby's song "Flower", which is obviously because of my 1999 EOY coming soon which is the year "Play" came out. The only other debuts this week are pretty modern, Sia with her 3 year old song "Bird Set Free" and Broods leapfrogging "Heartlines" and instead debuting with "Free" at #100.

"Heartlines" does hold #5 from last week though. Leading the pack is Taylor Swift's most noted impact this week, a debut for the Kendrick Lamar version of "Bad Blood" at #1, the original version having already made the main chart and being considerably more popular nowadays. It's not the only Kendrick Lamar remix of a popular song either, as his version of "Radioactive" with Imagine Dragons also debuts lower down. That's not the only Imagine Dragons hip hop collaboration this week either, as "Sucker For Pain" gets a new peak. Post Malone's tour has recently gone on sale but the impact isn't very pronounced. It does time up nicely with "Congratulations" which just turned 2 years old today and enters at #2. A song I thought was a bit newer than it is, Thomas Rhett debuts with "Die A Happy Man", and also in the pop-country realm, Keith Urban's "Blue Ain't Your Color" gets a new peak. There's more Queen with two more debuts here, one a recognisable song, one a very long to type out live track, which I counted as it was an old release as opposed to the newly released Live Aid tracks on the soundtrack. The Prodigy climb a bit higher with "Breathe" the week their new album is out, while Illy and Vera Blue get a new entry for "Papercuts" after they performed it together on ABC's new show "The Set", which was otherwise mostly impacting ineligible songs.

Nov 11th

No need to be alarmed, the country and indeed the world's love for Makoto Niijima as personified by her metaverse name of Queen stands strong. Doubling as kind of boring but also kind of interesting is the sheer consistency. The songs are largely as high as they were last week, and amazingly, largely in the same order, with the entire top 8 retained from last week. It'd also be the top 9 except for the timely date of this week's chart, it being November 11th, we have the roughly biannual return of "The Last Post", most popular nowadays by The Bugler but there are 4 different versions of it going around. I'm most fascinated by The Miltary Bugler, which is not my typo. There are two other notably interesting things about Remembrance Day here. Firstly, likely due to date convenience, Lee Kernaghan gets a debut for "Spirit Of The Anzacs" which only made the Bubbling Under chart on...Anzac Day this year. The other interesting thing is that while Redgum miss out on a new peak due to all the Queen, they make for a very aesthetically pleasing set of metadata, with their WI & HP next to each other being 11, on 11/11. To note with Queen, they do score some new peaks with "Killer Queen", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "You're My Best Friend" and "Love Of My Life", and now take up 15 of the top 16. Peculiarly, the two high charting Freddie Mercury tracks have left the chart this week, but we otherwise have the exact same 20 Queen songs as last week. And this week is all about high peaks squandered by Queen, but there are some that manage regardless. Choirboys are back with "Run To Paradise" now in the top 20. I believe Flo Rida is here on the R&B Fridays tour, and while he might be infamous for his inability to play Australian shows from 2011, it's instead T-Pain who couldn't make it which might explain why "My House" scores a big new peak but "Low" has a less notable re-entry. For the same reason, Usher has a big debut for "U Got It Bad" and a return for "OMG" lower down. Back to the new peaks, we've got returning entries from Scorpions & Grace. I might have expected Mariah Carey to return last week but she's here now and we'll have to see when she'll be able to shake up the top end of the charts with this especially tough competition. To round out the debuts for this week, what you'll see lower as a big week for Grease peaks with "You're The One That I Want" finally promoted to main chart status, while The Chainsmokers get their second ever entry with "Don't Let Me Down".

I didn't note Def Leppard in the main commentary because both of their songs barely missed new peaks, but they do have a new arrival for "When Love And Hate Collide" at #1 on the Bubbling Under chart. Also extending main chart fortunes is Usher, who gets two more debuts with "U Remind Me" and "Confessions Pt. II". Unbelievably there's even more Queen with 2 more debuts here. As noted, there are two more Grease tracks here which means we've got the whole Grease Megamix on the chart this week, and speaking of '90s #1 hits, Roxette get their second here with "It Must Have Been Love". To finish this chart off with an awful joke, the chart this week finishes with the biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998, the song that has surely taught many of us not to get either too excited or too close to a woman when you're grinding. The song has surely prevented many awkward situations in our lives so we have to say thank u, Next.

Nov 18th

It was just recently that we passed the one year anniversary of same sex marriage being legalised in Australia, and by sheer coincidence we've got what might just be the highest representation of LGBTI+ artists on the chart this week. Surprising nobody, Queen are still on top, and they've crept up even more in this 3rd week of total domination. This time it does come with a bit of a reshuffle, as "Somebody To Love", "Radio Ga Ga" & "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" move up in the ranks to new peaks. They're also still getting new entries with 3 more debuts this week. Also going well this week is a former collaborator with Queen, George Michael, who appears to have a similar biopic in the works. When he died, it was in the high selling December period so his impact on this chart was somewhat squandered. This means that on this less major news week, he actually manages to get some new peaks with some of his entries, and some new entries entirely as well, all the debuts this week are from these two artists. The entire top 24 is made up of Queen & George Michael tracks, with one exception being Flo Rida's spectacularly high "My House" which would be an easy #1 in most weeks but is instead only #10. That's thanks to the R&B Fridays tour, which also bolsters Lil Jon's "Get Low" to a new peak this week. Red Hot Chili Peppers recently announced an Australian tour giving them their biggest success here in over 2 years. Elton John also has a big week and you can tell everybody it's because of "Your Song" being used on this year's John Lewis Christmas ad. Once again, the mass Queen impact at the top of the chart is a stress on chart regulars, and "The Sound Of Silence" and "Thinking Out Loud" both hit all new lows.
