Forum - General: Forum Games - Quick List Vote Game Pt. 9 (2018 Hottest 100)

Part 8: http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=57724

This whole shindig has been going for over two years, but if you're new to it all, let me briefly explain: Quick List Vote Game (or QLVG for short) is a 5 stage voting game that takes place across a fortnight. The aim is to take a list of 100 songs and eliminate the bottom 20 songs per voting each round until there are just 20 songs left and a winner is crowned from that. Voting is done by selecting some 25-40% of the remaining songs each round and submitting it to my memo inbox before the voting deadline, which comes up at 6pm on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. Scoring in each round works as simple: regardless of how many songs you vote for, your #1 vote will score 40 points, and each subsequent song will score 1 point less, going down to #40 votes in round 1 scoring just 1 point. With each new round, you are free to adjust how many songs you wish to vote for (as well as the order), either for strategy or personal reasons, so long as it complies with the range that is set for that voting round. If you miss a round of voting, your previous round's votes will be re-used with a 20% penalty (so your top vote will get 32 points, #2 gets 31.2, etc), and your vote will consist of as many of your previously voted songs as possible, provided it doesn't go over the limit. This means that someone who voted 25 songs in round 1, could potentially be made to vote for 25 songs again in round 2. The 20% penalty stacks upon successive rounds. Meanwhile, to grant some purpose to your earlier votes, from round 2 onwards, I take 25% of a song's total points scored and add them to the total for the next round. In the event of a tie in points between two eliminated songs, if possible the tie will be broken by the number of (active) voters, and then the top vote received for the round. If that is not possible, the songs will be considered tied for ranking purposes. If this happens on the cusp of the elimination line (eg two songs tie at #80 for round 1) and the tie cannot be broken, all the tied songs will proceed into the next round, barring an extreme circumstance where there are somehow more than 20 songs scoring 0 points. In the interest of fairness, I will always lock in my own vote before the game begins, and I will be unable to adjust the order or proportion of my vote after that.

The list of songs included in each game is determined through a number of ways. Generally speaking, the songs will have to match a pre-determined theme, or feature on a certain list of songs that has been chosen. Typically, the theme will be chosen by a vote between multiple different themes, and from that, a voting process takes place in the Qualifying thread to determine the 100 songs that will compete in the next round. These Qualifying rounds typically open up on the Tuesday after a new QLVG is posted.

The only thing I'm changing is that for the sake of my own exhaustion, not just because I'm also co-running another forum game at the moment with similar frequency, is that I may be more prone than usual to have week long breaks between games. It gets a little exhausting having to be ready to count votes, type results, type commentary, prepare lists etc every couple of days, and I think breaks in-between games could do me a lot of good.

Now, if you're familiar with the way things have been run in the past, you might recall that the new year tends to start with the ARIA EOY + Hottest 100 + other favourites. We'll still be doing those, but I thought it was appropriate to tackle the game that was done in the qualifying thread in December, lest we wait another 2 months to finally put it into play. With that I present to you a list of artists and song titles which share the same amount of letters on both sides!

Here's me hoping with this absence that I haven't forgotten anything, but I'm inclined to say I'll be requiring your Top 25 to 40 votes from this and sent into me by 7pm on Wednesday. This schedule clashes a little with the Logo game so I might change it if it doesn't feel right.

This is not how we usually start the year but I really didn't want to have this round far too detached from the time it was actually voted on. It would have the worrying potential that no one who's voting in the round by the time it arrives even cares about them, we'd be loaded with 0's. This time around we just have 4, not at all from obscure artists but perhaps less obvious cuts from them to fit the theme...okay well Khalid's top 10 hit "Better" is among that, and Guns N' Roses charted pretty high too with "Yesterdays" too...and so did Culture Club's "It's A Miracle". But "Like Gold" is not one of the noteworthy singles from Vance Joy's 2nd album so that clearly sets the stage for the others which were all hits...just ignore my observation. Just barely squeaking ahead of those 4 is Linkin Park's "Bleed It Out", which was not a major hit by any means, but it did still manage to return to the charts after Chester Bennington passed away.

#91. Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand

Points - 7

Top Vote - #34

Now to drag through the low votes which are noteworthy for at least being votes. At #95 is the Alicia Keys song that largely due to timing, lays claim to being by far her highest selling single ever in Australia (I'm talking, it's sold roughly twice as much as "No One"). Donna Summer gets to have esteemed company with Vanilla Ice tied at #93, while Queen are still riding on a massive wave of popularity (I mean they always are but especially now), but they can't get "Flash" any higher than #92. Lastly we've got ARIA Logo game tentative qualifier Belinda Carlisle with "Circle In The Sand" at #91.

#86. Kate Ceberano - True Romantic

Top Vote - #29

Considerably expanding the range of song ages in this game, is Chuck Berry with his 1955 single "Maybellene" at #90. Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow had a massive US adult contemporary hit that Australia didn't touch with a ten foot pole in "Picture" at #89. Amy Grant follows with the biggest of her two rare Christian pop crossover hits, "Baby Baby" at #88, while a noteworthy elimination is Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror" at #87, the song that nearly posthumously scored him another UK #1 hit in 2009. Kate Ceberano's Greatest Hits shares its name with the last song "True Romantic", a non chart hit which when I last checked isn't even on this site's database, which makes perfect sense when you note that one of her recent ARIA Logo entries wasn't even on the tracklisting. Not to discredit "True Romantic" though as it's quite good and lands at #86.

#81. Time Bandits - Endless Road

Points - 22
Current Voters - 1
Top Vote - #19

A really early single for Little Mix comes next as they teamed up with Missy Elliott and took a De La Soul (or whatever artist you're familiar with it from) interpolation on "How Ya Doin'?" at #85. It sits next to perhaps the most peculiar song in this whole game, Ariana Grande's dedication to her then partner "pete davidson", which actually made the ARIA Chart, despite only being about a minute long and they also broke up soon after. One of Elton John's surprisingly not many UK #1's, "Sacrifice" lands at #83, then we stop off in the 2000s for a bit with one of the two big hits of the time called "Baby Boy"...this one perhaps enduring more so because it's by Beyonce at #82. Then finishing us off is a band I just learnt is Dutch, Time Bandits with their '80s hit "Endless Road".
In a hurry, here's your 80

You will need to supply your Top 20 to 32 votes by 7pm on Friday to contribute to this. The ARIA Logo game is also open at the moment, and the ACI should be tonight at some point after everyone is asleep.
Didn't realise this was back!
'True Romantic' made the ARIA top 100.
Pity I was too late to throw some points at "Endless Road' & 'Circle In The Sand'.

It's far from over mate. If things go as expected, Dean Lewis's "Be Alright" will be in the next 2 games, against primarily 2018 competition, which could see a better finish than #80. At the moment there's more old school competition, notably the first Foo Fighters single "This Is A Call" at #79. Father John Misty's "The Ideal Husband" is not from that long ago at #78 though he has released two more albums since then. Mariah Carey goes a little further back with a cut from "E=MC^2" at #77, while Elton John has perhaps the most contentious entry with "Rocket Man" which usually has a longer title.

From the small handful of artists with multiple entries in this list, Dixie Chicks go back to back with their entries at #75 & #74. Ball Park Music notched up their 9th Hottest 100 hit this year, but if we go back to 2011, it's simpler times with "All I Want Is You" being their first at #73. Because this is a game of artists & song titles having the same amount of letters, some fun can be had when names allow it, namely the longest title in this game, "So Good At Being In Trouble" by Unknown Mortal Orchestra at #72. For a simpler line up, we drop from 22 characters to 8, for Sheppard's #1 hit "Geronimo" at #71.

Well noted as their BIGGEST CHART HIT EVER IN AUSTRALIA, Snow Patrol land at #70 with "Signal Fire". Chart rules were more nice to Selena Gomez so she had many more hits to come after "Love You Like A Love Song" which lands at #69. Getting some sort of vague synchronicity between round by round positions and points is Lady Gaga's "Applause" at #68, while Mariah Carey returns with her last US #1 hit...so far in "Touch My Body" at #67. It is a strange line up of circumstances that I feel Mariah is more likely to score another US #1 hit in the future than Katy Perry, who incidentally has her last US #1 hit "Dark Horse" at #66.

On a different side of career trajectories, The Script have their first big Australian hit "Breakeven" at #65. Mariah Carey has one last entry tonight, this time from a different album with "Say Somethin" at #64. The Cure also lay claim to multiple entries but it's just their first here tonight with "Primary" at #63. Bon Iver have one of a few of their songs which have grown on me significantly over the years, 2011's "Calgary" at #62, while one last elimination is..."Last Request" from Paolo Nutini at #61, finishing a very 2000s heavy set of songs.

Unlike other forum games you might see me partially orchestrate, you're allowed 3 days for this one from the start, as this round will close at 7pm on Monday. I will need your Top 15 to 24 votes to contribute to the round. I'd also like ACI votes if that's a thing that you do, or ARIA Logo votes if that's a thing that you do.
Jesus that was tough.
Always thought Chasing Cars was Snow Patrol's biggest hit...well there ya go. Nice work as always Jinxie.
woah Applause, Dark Horse & Say Somethin' really suffered without my vote Surprised SS was able to last as long as it did though and that both Mariah songs made it past the first round!

Despite no shortage of popular tracks released since, it was a weird discovery for me that "Fine Time" was New Order's last top 20 hit. Now it's sitting here at a number you would likely associate with a different New Order song, #60. For a lesser known '80s cut, we've got Champaign, with arguably their biggest hit "How 'Bout Us" at #59. Back on that side of artists with no shortage of popular hits, You Am I find "Damage" at #58. They're an artist with considerably more success in Australia than anywhere else, and the other side of this is Karyn White who had multiple massive hits in the US, including "Superwoman", but is rather absent on the Australian charts. Then finally fitting it none of those categories particularly is Pat Benatar with the first of her two entries, "Invincible" at #56.

After a series of artists popular in the '90s with non-'90s songs, this set is almost entirely '90s. Easiest way to encapsulate this is a remarkably '90s #1 single in Cut N Move's "Give It Up" at #55. One of the biggest albums of that decade, "Urban Hymns" clocks in at #54 with "Lucky Man". Then I realised I was lying because I didn't double check things before I started typing so we've got Paula Abdul's one '80s hit, "Straight Up" at #53. Then there's the true '90s band Bluejuice and wait why are you escorting me out of this building. Don't worry because Nirvana are up next to make everything feel '90s by association, with "Lithium" at #51.

Anyway, the band who are noted for being especially popular for some arbitrary era of time, Pearl Jam, start the top half with their particularly popular #1 hit "Last Kiss". To make things topical, the Grammy awards were on earlier today, and while Corinne Bailey Rae didn't win the lottery of random artist from years ago who won stacks of awards, she was more in tune with them when she was at her most popular, "Put Your Records On" was in fact nominated for both the Song & Record gongs. Disclosure have also been nominated for several Grammy awards despite not being American, though not for their highest charting UK hit "White Noise" which lands at #48. The Presets' "Apocalypso" album technically qualifies for this game except that it's not a song, and it has no shortage of tracks which come close to qualifying, but the only one that does is "If I Know You" which is in at #47. Lastly we have this game's winner of the random '80s new wave band battle (my excuse being that Tears For Fears are too popular to count) in Animotion, with their hit cover of "Obsession" at #46.

Arguably one of my favourite artists to release an album in the early 2010s and take 6 years to follow it up, Melody's Echo Chamber lands at #45 with "Some Time Alone, Alone". Depending on who is reading this, you are probably expecting me to say something outrageously...ludicrous about Jessica Mauboy's "Saturday Night", but I'm above that and will just note that it's at #44. Quite a lovely discovery for me is Cocteau Twins' "Iceblink Luck" at #43, while we stay in that general era but absolutely not that scene with Jewel's "Hands" at #42. Best known for fronting Grammy award winning band Greta Van Fleet [citation needed], Robert Plant goes from barely making it to round 2 to nearly sneaking into round 4 with "Heaven Knows" at #41 also why the hell would you say you're pushing 90 on the freeway if you don't even elaborate on what the actual speed limit is, making it impossible to understand the true lengths at which you go to make good time, absolute nonsense.
There are however, 40 songs remaining which do not make any unexplained assertions about driving certain speeds on the freeway

It may well be delaying the inevitable when it gets overtaken, but "Uptown Funk" recently extended its lead as the highest certified single of all time in Australia. Here we are a modest land where it lands at #40. It also sits side by side with another Billboard Hot 100 #1, arguably the first ever rap song to get there, Blondie's "Rapture" at #39. Of course to humble them further, a song that hardly charted anywhere, though it does come from a highly regarded album of recent years in Lorde's "Melodrama", that being "Sober" at #38. Matchbox Twenty can't quite live up to their name, but one must commend just them for...how far they've come to land at #37. Lastly we arrive at the first of two Fleetwood Mac entries which of course isn't...oh it actually is "Go Your Own Way" from that obscure album "Rumours".

One of those wonderful enduring jangle pop/alt rock singles of the '90s, Gin Blossoms' "Hey Jealousy" is also in the canon of singles that are far darker beyond the surface, in fact the songwriter committed suicide not long after the single took off. That is an awkward tangent to jump off of but I have to mention that I made a mistake last round. I'm still getting back into the swing of things here and I may have accidentally attributed a vote for "Straight Up" to "All Fired Up", I imagine you can see how I might have done that. "All Fired Up" is out now at #34 which is close to where it should be anyway, but "Straight Up" should probably be a little higher than it (and thus Fleetwood Mac should have been eliminated last round). It would be maybe possible to simulate where the songs all *should* be, but I have not the time to concern myself with that when it'll probably just turn out that Paula is at the #30-#32 ranking I'd estimate for her. In the world of more correct results, Anna Nalick is back in the game for only the 2nd time, previously she was eliminated in the first round with "Breathe (2AM)", but now she's all the way up at #33, sitting alongside Adele no less, with what is nowadays her best selling song on iTunes most weeks, "Hello" at #32. It's not the only UK #1 hit from 2015 either, because right up next is Jess Glynne with her first solo #1 hit "Hold My Hand", back when she didn't need to rely on arbitrary OCC nonsense to increase her tally of #1 hits.

In all honesty I still can't remember how Kim Wilde's "Cambodia" goes but I do know now for future reference that I like it a lot, which helped it reach #30. Perhaps the biggest comeback story of this rendition of the game is Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me", which was nearly eliminated in the first round, but got a huge influx of voters who forgot to vote in that one, making it fly up the list until it finished at #29. This makes for quite a bit of dissonance not dissimilar to Hottest 100 predictions vs. the real list, when the #80 song from round 1's results was ahead of the #13 song in the next round. Things have turned around since to give My Chemical Romance the upper hand with "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" at #28. The same can't really be said for All Saints who have been on a downward spiral with "Never Ever" after starting in the top 10 but finishing at #27, right behind the only song in this list about doing 180 on the Don Valley Parkway, which we can look up and know has a speed limit of 90kmph, thus properly contextualising just how much they're speeding to get away.

One of my favourite sorts of upward motion is when a song ascends in stairs of 10s which looks rather pleasing on the round by round data. In the case of Madonna's "Cherish", it does however mean that any manner of momentum is cut short as it's eliminated now at #25. In stark contrast we've got the title track to Delta Goodrem's very successful "Innocent Eyes" album which has just been meandering in the 20s for this entire time, and then there's Avicii's "Levels" which fell off from the top 20 at the wrong time. One of the biggest hit singles ever to miss the top 20, it peaked at #24 first in 2012 and then again in 2018 after he sadly passed away. Here it's just a little higher at #23. Milky Chance also miss the milky chance to do it on the floormf of the top 20 as they fall just a tiny bit short at #22, alongside a late bloomer from John Farnham in "Age Of Reason" at #21.

Evidently when Pearl Jam named their first album "Ten" it was made clear that they are fond of numbers ending in 0, after all in this list they ranked at #50 with "Last Kiss", and now "Even Flow" from that very album is at #20. Speaking of iconic albums, The Cure's "Disintegration". Distressingly it will never appear in the ARIA Logo game (although 4 unrelated songs who share their names with tracks on it will), the closest they got was "Lullaby" which lands here at #19. How could this happen to thee? There's some fuel for thought hung upon your wall, rockabye.

Speaking of artists whose highly regarded material doesn't always line up to their highest chart positions, it goes without saying that "Summer Of '69" got the short straw back in the day but now stands as Bryan Adams' most popular song. After a slow start it rocketed into the top 20 finishing at #18. Next we've got the only artist to appear in this final round twice (unless there's a loophole I haven't found), appropriately "Modern Love" is the more modern entry from David Bowie here and lands at #17.

Billy Idol awaits his fate in two games on this site at once. It's unfortunate for him that his '80s material doesn't get a chance on the other game, as "Rebel Yell"'s finish at #16 shows considerable interest. Speaking of things that I orchestrate on this site, Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" is of course remembered as the first ever #1 on the Unofficial Catalogue chart. In a similar manner to there, its big first impression was met with a mighty cliff dive, as the song went from being in 2nd place at the start of the week to #15 now.

I'm sure you're hyped for the 2019 ARIA game. If you recall the 2018 game, there was no shortage of Ed Sheeran songs in there because of course. 2019's game will feature all of those (minus "Galway Girl") same songs again plus even more because of all those songs he co-wrote & featured on, credited or not. Before the Sheeran singularity though he was content to only have a few songs in the charts at a time, one of the first of which was "Lego House" which climbs to #14 here, sitting behind perhaps unexpected company namely because one of its biggest fans on this site wasn't even voting in this. Fergie's "Clumsy" is something of a curiosity as a top 5 smash here and in the US...but it peaked at #62 in the UK.

I used to joke about how whenever Peter Gabriel underperformed in this game, it's because his music wasn't on Spotify. It actually IS now, and wouldn't you know it, he's had a pretty good showing here with "Sledgehammer", proving that there's some merit to the song's audio rather than just its iconic video. Sitting alongside it, we transform our visible still images into miles, with Vanessa Carlton's #1 hit "A Thousand Miles" which this time around was perpetually stuck outside the top 10 to finish at #11.

There's a pretty even spread of eras in these results. Perhaps surprisingly the 1990s gets the short end of the top 10 straw compared to the '80s & '00s, but to its credit there's both a 1989 & a 2000 single in here. The latter is in fact right here, with The Dandy Warhols "Bohemian Like You" at #10. They sit next to a former champion in Tears For Fears, who have now hit the top 10 with 3 different songs (I'm going off memory, I REALLY need to make a spreadsheet at some point), as yet another song from that big chair of theirs, "Head Over Heels" lands at #9.

It's Friday night, and if you're far too on Twitter like me, that means it's time (in about 4 more hours to be exact) to inform you about Daft Punk's new single "Get Lucky", the sound of the summer arguably. Enough of you had the chance to check it out and it lands at #8, right behind blink-182, who are somewhat relevant at the moment because of Travis Barker's new song with YUNGBLUD & Halsey, but are also relevant in this thread because one of their biggest hits "I Miss You" has landed at #7. I did check this time, and in their 9th ever appearance in this game, this is their first ever top 10 finish.

As there's a lot of crossover between the two games' audience, I'm sure you recall that Roxette have had quite a lot of misfortune and near misses in the ARIA Logo game. We'll find out tonight how "It Must Have Been Love" will or won't contribute to that canon, but perhaps the most noteworthy is "The Look" missing the top 3 due to uncharacteristically strong competition. To put that in perspective, they finished 4th out of 10 songs, but here they've finished 6th out of 100 songs, so perhaps injustice was had. The same could also be theorised for Heart but with a different song. Though I can't prove it, I suspect that their 5th place finish for their #1 hit could have been upgraded to 3rd if just one of the 3 powerhouses of the round wasn't stealing more of their votes. For the 2nd time in a week, they've finished in 5th here, but this time it's with their mega '80s ballad "Alone".

There's esteemed company in this final round as two of the final four songs belong to artists who have won this game not once, but twice. The Killers are as of yet unable to upgrade that twice to a thrice however, but must be commended for a more unlikely top 5 finisher from their catalogue, with "Read My Mind" making it to #4. For Bruce Springsteen, it's perhaps a slightly more obvious selection from his catalogue of hits that winds up here. What was once the song with the longest ever top 50 chart run, that has since make look quaint by the chart runs of late. Bruce Springsteen does still hold the title of the lowest peaking (and I think only non-#1) song to earn the title of being the #1 song of the year, with "Dancing In The Dark" which lands here at #3.

Though in real time it's been a decent time frame gap, we very nearly had an unprecedented return to the top of the table. It would come as no shock to suggest that David Bowie has more than a few popular songs, but if he wants to become the first artist to get 3 wins, he'll have to wait out the next 3 games because he's just missed his latest chance with "Life On Mars?". Who could surpass Ziggy Stardust you don't wonder because you've certainly seen the result before reading this paragraph? Why of course it's a 50 year old British dude who was born in India and has a name I cannot pronounce. It is not the first time we've encountered White Town's very successful hit "Your Woman" in this game. Just recently last year it finished 3rd place in the battle of #2 hits. Seemingly intent on avoiding that position, he's jumped up to #1, which provides the visually pleasing sight that the winner of the game in which the artist & song title have the same amount of letters, we have one where the number of letters in each word forms a palindrome. It's what the people wanted.
That's a wrap. Minus that tiny hiccup in an earlier round, I'd like to think I'm back into the swing of things. While I suggested there may be week long gaps between rounds, for the time being I'll hold off on that and have the next game start 3 days from now on Monday. The 2019 season will get its proper introduction as we dive into what ARIA claims were the 100 biggest songs of the year with no relevant omissions. If 2018 music isn't your vibe, I'll just have to ask you to be patient as we get through this. Nonetheless, thanks to all who participate, it's especially nerve ranking to restart again after a break. Have a good weekend, do the ACI if you want and do the ARIA Logo game when the results are up if you want to do that as well.
We enter the realm of chaos that is non-member curated lists. We shall learn all sorts of marvels such that the general public are pretty happy to listen to the same small handful of artists over and over again, or even songs perhaps because a lot of these were in last year's list as well. Nonetheless, not a single one of these songs has won in this game before so I didn't have to make any omissions. So I present the ARIA EOY in its purest form

So let's see how this goes. Select anywhere from a Top 25 to 40 and submit them to me by 7pm on Wednesday. I don't have to do any ARIA Logo work for the next two days so I'm pretty chuffed to relax until then.

This is obviously the part of the thread where you expect me to deliver endless shade to the songs who were not nominated by anyone to be in here and evidently no one really wanted them here either. I will instead commend the two songs that scored 0 points in last year's version of this game and have been upgraded to more than 0 points. I can however mock derisively, the two songs that have done the opposite and gone from scoring more than nothing, to scoring nothing. But then again that's not fair either, there's less incentive to vote again for songs that were already hits in 2017, especially when those said artists have more, newer songs to go for. But on the other hand, lol "I Fall Apart" was the most streamed song on Apple last year and it scores nothing. Maroon 5's "What Lovers Do" was the other song I was referring to. The rest of these are fresh blood. For the second year in a row, Florida Georgia Line end up on the floor of the list, this time with Bebe Rexha on "Meant To Be". The Eminem and Ed Sheeran collaboration that the world was demanding is met with the severe ambivalence that it deserves, the same goes for Calum Scott's second extremely adult contemporary ballad hit, though one he actually wrote. I've heard his album is better though. DJ Khaled is also back with another hit with mostly the same cohorts on "No Brainer". Last year's "I'm The One" made it to #65 so clearly Lil Wayne adds a lot to the formula.

Otherwise we have the world of mostly ambivalence but at least they got off the ground. Marshmello has 4 different entries in this list, which is arguably a battle royale so it's familiar territory for him. "Wolves" just couldn't find a good weapon after getting off the Battle Bus and falls off at #92. In the world of extremely white rappers, NF is certified as more popular than Eminem as "Let You Down" gets to #91, but int he world of extremely no longer alive rappers, XXXTENTACION doesn't have any competition to compare with as "SAD!" lands at #91. Noah Kahan's egregiously flogged by radio and then Spotify hit "Hurt Somebody" lands at #90, which proves at least someone in the country likes it.

Because the world moves fast but the charts don't, we can have in the same list, a song where G-Eazy & Halsey act as the next Beyonce/Jay-Z power couple, and also a song where Halsey disses him post-breakup. The former leaves less of an impression at #89. Next we meet the first of those upgraded songs, as Imagine Dragons managed to half-heartedly appear in another End Of Year list with "Believer" despite spending almost none of that year in the top 50, but then again it helps when there are literally missing songs in that list to free up space ("Believer" was #99 of course). The Lil Dicky song which obviously has no flaws in either concept or execution is at #87, while the second ever soundtrack hit in the movie series based on books primarily read by middle aged women as performed by a member of One Direction lands at #86, the demographic screw will never stop being a source of comedy for me.

Here we have the other song whose very appearance on the list is questionable at best, that being Post Malone's "Congratulations" which was #100 on the overall list and thus really shouldn't be here. I guess 7 Post Malone songs wouldn't be enough to sum up 2018. Speaking of sharing oddly specific traits with "Believer", Hailee Steinfeld is here with the other song that scored 0 points in last year's game, this time "Let Me Go" has been upgraded enough to land at #84. There's then a reasonably significant jump in points for the last 3 songs, firstly Dennis Lloyd with his difficult to genre define "Nevermind" at #82, a position shared with the first of two Jess Glynne entries in this list which got to #1 in the UK because of their dumb new rules, "I'll Be There". Then depending on who you ask, Bazzi's "Mine" is either a weird entity that makes no sense as a hit...or just another pop hit of not much notability. What is notable to me is that it missed the ARIA top 10 by 1 sale, and it also missed round 2 by 1 point.
That leaves 80 songs which have at least a bit more fanfare behind them

Usual deal here, you want to get your vote in before 7pm on Friday, your vote should consist of a Top 20 to 32 from this selection of 80. In case you wanted to know, Billboard is doing one of its 120 annual chart delays so the ACI is waiting on that before I can finish making the list. Hopefully I'll do it tonight.

Well when I suggested that Maroon 5 had more songs to contend in this list, I was not at all under the impression that they would have the very next song out with "Girls Like You" at #80. Let's pretend then that I was talking about SZA who's still going strong somewhere in this list. Though it might not feel like it, Tiesto has his highest ever placing in an ARIA EOY via "Jackie Chan" contributing further to the Post Malone mass at #79. Justin Timberlake's song which contributes confusing conversation due to the fact some people have only ever heard it via the music video & some only via the album version which are reasonably different, "Say Something" ends up at #78. It's being the only sentence cringier than Marshmello Fortnite Concert, namely the title YouTube still has for Marshmello's "FRIENDS". Also for the 2nd year in a row, probably leading to a 3rd in all honesty, we've got "Perfect" here.

We just had Anne-Marie & Ed Sheeran next to each other but apart, but now they're both contributing to the song "2002" at #75 which of course has no logistic errors which are worth exploring. Juice WRLD does not know who Sting is or how lucid dreaming actually works but he has wound up at #74 as the only song that survived round 1 with only one vote. The Marshmello songs just keep on coming with "Silence" at #73, there's just one more left! Kygo has the first of his two entries with his big radio favourite "Remind Me To Forget" at #72...and speaking of Kygo, Imagine Dragons are at #71 with "Thunder".

That last Marshmello song arrives, as "Happier" is at #70...oh wait wrong one. But to not make it feel like it's all against Ed Sheeran here, a fellow cohort of being all over this list is fairly active in these eliminations, as Khalid goes back to back, first his nice Martin Garrix collaboration "Ocean" at #69, and then his very long running top 20 hit "Better" at #68. The 3rd version of "In My Mind" to make the charts is the first to make the top 10, and in here at #67. If Gigi D'Agostino had impacted the ARIA Charts in his prime he'd be arguably the biggest chart veteran in this list. Finally we have the other arbitrary meaningless UK #1 hit for Jess Glynne in "These Days", a song about arbitrary meaningless recollections, so perhaps it fits.

If the last post wasn't enough, we've got a 4th Khalid song for today, with "Young Dumb & Broke" carrying on from 2017's list to #65. I accidentally didn't even mention "Rewrite The Stars" when commenting on round 1, so to keep on brand next at #63 we've got Post Malone with his 4th entry so far, "Psycho" at #63. Something of a surprise top 10 hit in this chart climate is Conrad Sewell's "Healing Hands" at #62, while we hit the first of Drake's handful of entries in the song which Pitchfork apparently believes the lead artist is not outshined in.
It's time for the 3rd round as the competition gets tighter

Selena Gomez is of course an executive producer for "13 Reasons Why" which I assume is very much relating to the creative output and not the clout of having the most followed person on instagram backing your project. At the very least it gives her a justifiable reason to push a song of her own from the soundtrack, which gives us "Back To You" at #60. The most difficult name to spell in the world, if ARIA have taught me anything, is Bea Miller, who features alongside NOTD on "I Wanna Know". No doubt thanks to finding a place on every Spotify playlist that ever existed, Angus & Julia Stone's "Chateau" gets a somewhat belated appearance despite being released in the middle of 2017. Zedd on the other hand probably knew exactly what he was doing by releasing a big new hit single at the very start of the year, priming "The Middle" to be one of the most heard songs in all of 2018, and landing at #57. The most obvious example of that ideal though is Ed Sheeran making sure we already knew what the biggest song of 2017 would be within 2 weeks of the year starting. 2 years on and "Shape Of You" is still in the charts and I wouldn't be surprised if it landed in 2019's list. For the time being it's here at #56.

Shawn Mendes went for the bold strategy of making a song very similar to "Use Somebody" when the target market are barely old enough to remember that song. Arguably it worked as it's his only song in this list and it's at a respectable #55. Vance Joy just barely missed the Hottest 100 top 50...twice (though he was #50 in 2014), and to add to that, "We're Going Home" has ended up in nearly the same spot at #54. He's not the only Hottest 100 alumni here though, Amy Shark & Dean Lewis are here at #53 & #51, for the latter it's a decent improvement from #80 in the last game, maybe 3rd time's the charm? Also the Lauv song that Spotify and sometimes actual people like a lot is at #52.

Another 2017 hit still carrying on and yet to leave the ARIA Chart, Post Malone's "rockstar" lands at #50. The first of Drake's 3 lead artist entries is arguably the biggest hit of them, as the longest running #1 hit of the year "God's Plan" lands at #49. Speaking of long running hits, Benny Blanco somehow nearly broke the record for the longest running top 10 hit of all time with "Eastside" which lands at #48. Dua Lipa lands all three of her entries in the top 50, just "IDGAF" lags a bit behind the rest of the pack at #47. Camila Cabello has managed the same too, perhaps it's Bazzi dragging her down a little since his solo track "Mine" landed at #81. Both of these worlds collide at #46 on "Beautiful".

Reportedly the first ever openly gay man to finish at #45 in QLVG in 2019, Sam Smith has "Too Good At Goodbyes" still carrying on. Next we have the most popular Adele song of 2018 courtesy of Kanye West & Lil Pump on "I Love It" at #44. One could argue that Clean Bandit wrote "I Miss You" about the QLVG top 40, but if they did it was pretty ill-advised because they have another song to come that did make it. Finishing up their bids however are both Kygo & Imagine Dragons, for the latter it's the only song in here that they actually released in 2018. Lastly we have Sheppard who managed to sneak into the EOY with their #22 peaking single but not their #1 peaking album, "Coming Home" sits just outside the top 40 at #41 where it has been most of this time.

In case you were wondering what song just scraped through last time around, nothing's changed in 2 days time as Drake started the round from the bottom and now he's still there with "In My Feelings" at #40. Somewhat higher than his other entries is Marshmello's highest alongside Bastille on "Happier". Post Malone still has a handful left though, one of his more popular entries being his soundtrack hit turned popular song off the back of other songs of his, turned album track probably to boost streaming numbers in 2018, and that brings us to "Candy Paint" at #38. One can only speculate where "OTW" would be on the End Of Year list if ARIA counted its streams correctly, but unlike "Location" last year, Khalid didn't lose an entry because of it. Lastly we've got Jonas Blue who surprisingly scored his longest charting top 50 hit with "Rise" despite *only* peaking at #7, and it does well here at #36.

We'll have to wait until the next game before we can do the battle of the two very different Australian tracks with the same guest vocalist. For the time being, Peking Duk set their gauntlet at #35 with "Fire". A$AP Rocky has one of the lowest peaking tracks in this list with thanks to the fact that it was hanging around the lower half of the top 50 for ages, "Praise The Lord (Da Shine)" finishing at #34. We've then got some holdovers from last year's list, with Kendrick Lamar at #33 & Camila Cabello at #32, both have another, newer entry on the way. On the other hand, we've got a soon to be carried over into 2019 hit from Post Malone & Swae Lee, given that it didn't even reach its chart peak until the start of 2019.

Unfortunately for Camila, the wait was not very long. Her two entries had quite a battle for what would reign supreme, but "Never Be The Same" narrowly wins at #30. The only Australian artist to make this list that has never made an EOY before is Hayden James, with "Just Friends" performing well at #29. If we want to talk about strong performance though, one must credit Halsey considering that last year she got 0 votes for "Now Or Never", but now she's all the way up at #28 with "Without Me". The highest of all of Ed Sheeran's songs carried from last year is "Castle On The Hill" at #27, and Post Malone also has his highest entry at #26 with "Better Now", which was trailing behind "Sunflower" for the first two rounds.

For the final set of eliminations, we've got the 2nd highest carry over from the 2017 list, with Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" apparently still being relevant enough in 2018 to make the list, and winding up here at #25. The Weeknd has consistently had two tracks in the top 20 for this whole game, but he's unfortunate to slip out just now with "Call Out My Name" finishing at #24. Speaking of Canada, Loud Luxury have also been narrowly ousted from the top 20 with "Body" at #23. What I said about The Weeknd also applies to Calvin Harris, with "Promises" taking a hit this round to #22. The unlucky honour of just missing the final round by less than 4 points is Panic! At The Disco with their first ARIA EOY entry in 12 years, "High Hopes".

George Ezra was somewhat lucky to sneak his way through to this final round as one of the few songs that have just been bouncing around the dreaded elimination line, "Shotgun" starts off the round at #20, but maybe even more lucky is Khalid & Normani. "Love Lies" did not receive a single top 10 vote last round but so many low placed votes was enough to push it through, though of course it meant for the risk of lost votes in the final round which is why it drops back to #19.

Just luckily sneaking through to the final round is the last carry over from 2017's list (though not quite the last 2017 song), Dua Lipa's "New Rules" which lands at #18. The actual highest 2017 song is just ahead of it, Pnau continuing their strategy from a year before by releasing a new single at the end of the year to start smashing the charts in the new year. "Go Bang" gets them to #17. This is an improvement from last year where "Chameleon" landed at #27.

As you would notice with the list shrinking, there's been an increasingly high concentration for Ariana Grande whose songs were not being eliminated at all. She finally takes her first hit with her 3 entries with "God is a woman" at #16. With less liberty in that regard is Clean Bandit who have their highest entry at #15.

I am obviously expected to have some funny quip relating to "SICKO MODE" but what I will note is that it nearly fell out of the top 20 last round after a strong start. It recovers a little to land at #14, but we'll see it again in the next game. I can't say the same for The Weeknd because Hottest 100 voters seemingly forgot he existed this year. "Pray For Me" is the first of two "Black Panther" tracks on this list and lands at #13, the same position The Weeknd landed in last year's ARIA EOY game with "I Feel It Coming".

Dua Lipa was partially responsible for keeping Calvin Harris out of the top 20 in this game, but she's also quite responsible for keeping him there because they teamed up for "One Kiss" which lands at #12. It was the biggest hit of the year in the UK though a little more modestly big here. Ariana Grande has one of the latest arrivals in the list with "thank u, next", which managed a placing despite how much streaming makes it increasingly difficult to late year releases to do so. She does however narrowly miss the top 10.

Incidentally, the artist who blocks Ariana is the one who actually appears in the music video for "thank u, next". Troye Sivan manages to sneak a place into the top 10 with "My My My!" which makes the top 10 considerably more respectful to Australian music than radio right now. Right ahead we've got what could be the ARIA #1 single again on the weekend because the market for people who only consume music in contexts devoid of the standard top 40 cycle is a powerful force. Not to say people who do, don't also like it, "Shallow" does land here at #9 for instance.

For me Billie Eilish's "lovely" has one of the most fascinating chart runs of 2018 because it's been in the top 50 for so many weeks and is a top 5 hit, but only spent a single week in the top 10. That doesn't at all correlate to this game though because it's been in the top 10 for this entire time. It's also the highest of Khalid's 8 entries. Far exceeding my expectations is Cardi B, whose superstar collaboration "I Like It" once got as high as #3 in these proceedings. Curiously it jumped between every position from #3 to #7, though it finishes at the lowest of those.

Also having something of an erratic run is Childish Gambino. Absolutely one of the most peculiar ARIA #1's of all time, it dropped out of the top 10 last round but a late boost sends it back up to #6. Just ahead of it we have Kendrick Lamar who for the 2nd year in a row has landed in the top 5 with an ARIA #2 hit. Arguably it counter-balances SZA's other entry in this list giving her an average ranking roughly in the middle.

Clearly though Cardi B is the star of the show because she's the only artist to land two entries in the top 10. Sure you could say that she's only a feature on "Finesse" but honestly if you listen to the original version of the song without her, the absence is very noticable. Making good with just one entry on the other hand is 5 Seconds Of Summer, who perhaps could be expected to do so considering it was quite handily the biggest hit of the year. In saying that, given how the #1 song tends to go in these things, #3 is a tremendously good finish.

I'd not really been mentioning it but this was a pivotal battle for QLVG in the sense that the next game's voting list had stakes in it. It was another case where the top two contenders were in a yin yang position of one being a Hottest 100 entry and the other not. As you might recall, last year by way of ineligibility, we had to call in the #101 song for the Hottest 100 game. That was not what was on the table this time, because BROCKHAMPTON's "BOOGIE" already is making way for King Princess, but if Drake had won this game, then Kwame would also be sliding in with his #102 entry. That was what looked likely to happen as this game went on because "Nice For What" was leading the entire way. The fact that it has wound up in 2nd place is not really a failing on its part, but rather tremendous luck on the side of its opponent. "no tears left to cry" received 8 votes as you can see above, but what you can't see is that 4 of those 8 votes are 8th place votes, meaning just a slight shift in the list's properties could have seen her voting stock plummet. But, the votes have to cut off at some point and bottom rung votes are not remotely invalid. You could just see this as the universe throwing Ariana Grande a bone for once after pelting her with unfortunate circumstances upon unfortunate circumstances. That she may well have utilised those misfortunes into the writing of "no tears left to cry" and resulted in such success is a sort of cosmic divinity that I cannot do justice to in words.
I have to type up another set of results right after I hit submit so I won't spend long on this but thanks to all the voters (with SZA) making for quite a suspenseful game even for me with all the numbers in front of me. As you probably know, the combined EOY is on this weekend and I'm taking that as an opportunity to indulge in the week long breaks for this game because I've done all this including spending 24 hours trapped in a hospital this week and I need a break :p So the next game will start on Monday, March 11th and will consist of the 2018 triple j Hottest 100, except with "Talia" instead of "BOOGIE". See you on Sunday maybe? The ACI would appreciate votes too.
I found a new thing to be mad about on this site because my last post was rejected and now I need to re-type it. Here's the latest Hottest 100 but with one less BROCKHAMPTON song and one more King Princess song

I'm not sure if it's just because there were far more artists with multiple entries than usual in this year's Hottest 100, but it feels like a lot of the artists eliminated tonight are able to take refuge in the fact that it's not their only entry in the list. Case in point, four out of five of these artists have such a claim (the outlying one is not Arctic Monkeys). There was quite a big response to this which was nice to me and it helped result in there only being 2 songs that received less than 2 votes. Unfortunately, one of those 2 went as far off as possible and got zero votes. Rather than being an extremely polarising option, it was perhaps instead one that doesn't inspire much of a response at all, with it being the first of Ruel's two entries, "Dazed & Confused". That was his first ever entry so maybe he still needs to build a reputation, whereas Thundamentals are much more established at this point and land at #99 with the higher of their two entries "I Miss You". Of course, Ruel wasn't the only Australian dude to debut in the Hottest 100 with two relatively closely ranked songs, because there's also Ziggy Alberts with "Laps Around The Sun" at #98. As noted before, there's one artist here without the safety net of additional entries and that's Lime Cordiale with "Dirt Cheap" at #97. Then we arrive at the artist with the most entries out of everyone, Ocean Alley. Their first casualty is actually their #10 finisher "Knees" which has to settle with #96.

The first carry over from the last list, once again Post Malone has a relatively hefty collection of entries the first of which is "Psycho" at #95. If you subscribe to the idea of people giving less points to songs that were already in the previous list, then Peking Duk are here to contradict it as their lower entry here is the non chart smash "Wasted" at #94. But wait there's more multiple entry artists as Hockey Dad have their first at #93 with *extremely bogan voice* y'know, "Sweet Release". Perhaps in the universe of the upcoming film "Yesterday", Liverpool's finest musical export is The Wombats, in any case they certainly have the most Hottest 100 entries, adding two more this year with the first being the rather nice "Cheetah Tongue" at #92. Now for a local stalwart we've got The Rubens who scored multiple entries in one year for only the 2nd time ever. The first is "God Forgot" at #91.

But the counter to many of these artists having multiple entries is that some are ending their journey fully in this round. Not the case though for DMA's who have the first of their 3 at #90 with "Do I Need You Now?". It is however the case for both Ziggy Alberts and Ruel who are again very close to each other, though this time Ruel is the higher one. Ziggy's John Legend cover is at #89 and Ruel's Seinabo Sey cover is at #88. Okay not really but they may as well be because it would fit in this group with Hockey Dad's definitely not Nirvana cover "I Wanna Be Everybody", and Ocean Alley's legitimate cover of Player's "Baby Come Back", as noted, the only song to receive a solitary vote.

Vance Joy arrives at #85 with "We're Going Home", which of course was in the last game so we'll have to see how his non-ARIA EOY hit can improve upon this position. Thundamentals are back and thus finishing up their run here at #84 with "Everybody But You", filling the awkward patois-esque void that Drake has left with his new music. Last year when we did this game, Gang Of Youths won with "What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?". Nothing But Thieves clearly covered their song in the hope of replicating it but only land at #83, though with the honour of having the highest Like A Version in this list. It's a wonder to me how it turned out like this but Skegss land the first of their two entries at #82, that being their #11 finisher "Up In The Clouds". And lastly we have KIAN who flips his 20th place finish in the actual countdown to 20th from the bottom, with "Waiting" having honestly pretty impressive voting credentials to go out in the first round.
I'm here to find out if this list will once again trip hitparade's spam detectors and stop me from posting it

That's 80 songs right there, which is too many for a list that needs to be sorted from top to bottom. You'll need to provide your Top 20 to 32 votes by 7pm on Friday, or maybe you won't because 392 may manage to will the results into existence by way of prediction. Other thread activities that revolve around me counting things are the ACI & ARIA Logo games, which are open for votes as well.

If you were somehow under the impression that this run of artists with multiple entries coming through would ever end, then you are sorely mistaken as adding to that pile is Hayden James, who counters Vance Joy by actually landing higher with his song that was in the ARIA EOY. Before we get to that, there's the follow up "Better Together" which has actually spent over 4 months in the ARIA Chart despite not reaching the top 60. Up next is the return of Ocean Alley with "Happy Sad" who accomplish the admittedly not too difficult task of surpassing the song's #100 ranking in the countdown, but on the downside they have just one song left now. In a similar sense, we also have Arctic Monkeys who just narrowly snuck into the Hottest 100 with "Four Out Of Five" who also make an improvement up to #78. It's then a very British affair as Bring Me The Horizon are along for the ride with the first single from their 4th consecutive #1 album, "MANTRA" at #77. Then we've got The Wombats returning with their highest entries, as the collective workings of your brain have made "Turn" land at #76. They should be pleased to know that there is some Drake higher up in this list.

If ARIA's component charts are to be believed, then The Rubens scored the dubious honour of having the biggest selling Australian song this year to miss the ARIA Year End list with "Never Ever". As "Hoops" had its sales split relatively evenly between two years, they've actually never made that list before, but they do now have 7 Hottest 100 entries, of which only two landed higher than this one. By amazing coincidence, they actually land right next to Peking Duk's "Fire", which of course as I've noted too many times now, has the same vocalist. Back for more is DMA's who interrupt their Hottest 100 order as their highest two entries have swapped pecking order here and "In The Air" lands at #73. No such case for A$AP Rocky & Hilltop Hoods however, with "Sundress" landing at #72 and "Clark Griswold" landing at #71.

Khalid landed at #68 in the previous game with "Better", and so this time he spirals over to the other side of niceness at #70. Taking that honour instead is The Presets, who seemingly have settled into a role of only releasing an album every 5 years or so but still finding their way into voters' hearts. Vance Joy does a similar thing but with considerably less breaks, as he's amassed 9 Hottest 100 entries all released between The Presets' two latest albums. His highest here is "Saturday Sun" at #68. Speaking of artists who have a very high Hottest 100 rank in their backlog, we've got the most recent artist to make their Hottest 100 debut, by virtue of landing all the way up at #2 (though he did nearly sneak a 2nd entry), with FISHER's "Losing It" landing here at #67. I just spent an hour typing up a review of it so I've earned the right to plug it here. Then we've got The Amity Affliction who just like Vance Joy have accumulated 9 Hottest 100 entries since 2013. The latest is "Ivy (Doomsday)" which only narrowly snuck into the list but manages #66 here.

I have just reminded myself that Baker Boy was actually #1 on last year's game at the end of the 4th round, but missed the top 10. We will never know if he had plans to make a similar ascension in this game as his only entry "Mr La Di Da Di" lands at #65. Ahead of it is Tash Sultana who was unable to go back to back on the honour of having the longest song in the countdown 2 years in a row, but not through lack of trying as "Cigarettes" is according to my iTunes playlist, the 3rd longest. Skinny legends Hockey Dad finish off their run at #63 with "Join The Club", while G Flip lands the first of her two, "Killing My Time" at #62. Very narrowly being bumped out of the next round is Kira Puru, whose Hottest 100 debut "Molotov" lands at #61.
Here's the remaining top 60, listed in an order that probably doesn't correlate to the actual order but we can't just say that outright for sure

I suppose hats off to Dean Lewis by finishing his 3rd consecutive appearance with a vague merge of his previous two results. Last game he made it to round 3, before that he was first out in round 2. This time he's first out in round 3 with "Be Alright", which will be surely creating a void for everyone as it's not going to be in the next game. To my pleasant surprise, Anderson .Paak picked up two entries this year, the first of which is "Bubblin" at #59. This whole section of the results could be described as a multiple entrant club sandwich, with single entrant bread. Meg Mac is closely mimicking her actual Hottest 100 finish with "Give Me My Name Back" at #58. To show that we're showing all perspectives here, Hayden James falls quite a bit sooner with his highest entry "Just Friends" at #57, and Kanye West is considerably higher with "Ghost Town" at #56.

If you're willing to believe me, "UFO" by Mallrat has landed at #55. San Cisco win tonight's honour of barely sneaking through to this round and pretending it didn't happen by creeping up further to #54 with "When I Dream". Alison Wonderland on the other hand squanders top 50 status slightly with "Church" slipping to #53. WAAX have what could in a few ways be described as 2018's "Girlie Bits" with "Labrador" at #52, and RÜFÜS DU SOL fall just short of making the top half with all 3 of their songs. How close? The next song has the same amount of points as "Treat You Better".

In a similar manner to the actual countdown, DZ Deathrays have just snuck through to the top 50 with "Like People". YUNGBLUD is way off on the other hand, with "Polygraph Eyes" landing 50 places higher here, and winning the 'mate' battle in a dramatic turning of tables. Jack River's 2nd consecutive year in the Hottest 100 does well for her. "Fool's Gold" landed at #75 in last year's game, this time she's at #48 with "Ballroom", and sitting next to big hits from Amy Shark at #47 and Halsey at #46. Both artists have a further entry to see in this list.

A certain subset of the people reading this are probably expecting a tremendous jape from me, but all I've got to say is that Angie McMahon has made it more than halfway to the top with "Missing Me' at #45. G Flip can't quite average out in the top half with her two entries, "About You" getting her as high as #44. Clearly the solution would be to only have one entry like Mac Miller (though he had 2 very near misses as well). Unless I'm forgetting something obvious, the first posthumous Hottest 100 entry since Ou Est Le Swimming Pool lands at #43. Drake improves a little on his performance in the last game but not enough to reach the next with "God's Plan" getting to #42. Incidentally, in that last game, the song just ahead of it was "Eastside", and that's happened again, with Benny Blanco's mega collaboration at #41.
Here are the final 40 to go into battle

Post Malone is showing some level of consistency though only thanks to a little bit of luck he could make it through to round 4 with "Better Now" which starts at #40. Trophy Eyes notoriously had their big Hottest 100 breakthrough in 2016...except they landed at #101. They snuck through this year but not at all in terms of this list as "You Can Count On Me" has potentially one of the biggest boosts from its Hottest 100 rank to this game. a 54 position boost from #93 to #39. I can't say it's the best because in this very same post we have King Princess who only qualified for this game with "Talia" on a technicality. This year's #101 song does plenty to justify its appearance as it lands at #37, in fact it's right next to one of her two proper entries, "Pussy Is God" at #36. In the middle of this is Flight Facilities, who followed up their Broods collaboration immediately with another Nott sibling, NÏKA, on "Need You" at #38.

There are 3 songs in this current round which have scored multiple #1 votes, and every rank counts because that helped CHVRCHES just narrowly get into this round with "Miracle" which finishes at #35. Next we have Thelma Plum who finishes 7 places higher than Benny Blanco's somewhat similar sounding song with "Clumsy Love" at #34. Skegss' biggest hit "Up In The Clouds" may have crashed out in round 1, but they've done very well with "Smogged Out" slowly climbing the list to #33. The consistency comment on Post Malone applies again because "Sunflower" also made it to round 4 in the last game, and here it is again at #32. Odette is another artist to improve fortunes or perhaps just find more fans in the space of a year. "Watch Me Read You" took her to #66 last year, but now she's up to #31 with "Take It To The Heart", which by 1 place, takes the new title of biggest position improvement on Hottest 100 rank.

Mark Ronson got into the Hottest 100 this year releasing his song on the last day of eligibility. It's kind of weird to imagine a universe where we would spend the next 10 months speculating the fortunes on "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart", which does well here at #30. Anderson .Paak returns with his highest entry in this list, "Tints" at #29, though Kendrick Lamar has another entry down the line. Ball Park Music surprisingly won triple j's album poll in 2018, but to prove that popularity isn't just an isolated pocket, our isolated pocket has sent them to #28 with "The Perfect Life Does Not Exist". Another somewhat niche Australian band finding a fair amount of fanfare here is Polish Club, getting to #27 with "Clarity", while if you can feel the end for DMA's, it has indeed arrived, with their highest entry at #26.

While last year's game netted two entries for Kendrick Lamar in the top 10, and for that matter, "All The Stars" was #5 in the previous game, the fanfare doesn't quite carry and he checks out at #25. There's major company alongside with Travis Scott's #3 Hottest 100 finisher "SICKO MODE" taking a hit this round and falling to #24, unable to make the top 20 two games in a row. RÜFÜS DU SOL have their 2nd highest entry at #23, but you can already see from this post that they haven't replicated their top 20 near miss from the Hottest 100. Hilltop Hoods on the other hand are striking pretty closely to their actual Hottest 100 position for "Leave Me Lonely", which has been climbing consistently but also never left the round 4 zone of the list, starting at #40 and ending at #22. It's unfortunte though for Vera Blue, who landed at #22 last year with "Mended", and once again she's locked out of the final round as "All The Pretty Girls" finishes at #21.
And it all comes down to the final 20 now

To contribute, you would be wise to select a Top 5 to 8 and send it to me by 7pm on Friday, afterwards I'll do all the necessary work. Ye olde strawpoll would happily take more votes here https://www.strawpoll.me/17630185 As would the ACI & Logo games, though the latter is probably currently being typed up and a new vote could horribly disrupt that.

The slight elephant in the room with these results is that while we've been powering through all these entries, to the point that every other remaining artist has only one song left on the list, Billie Eilish has made the top 20 with all 3 of hers. It goes without saying that we'll see all 3 of them tonight, with the first one being "lovely" which snuck into the top 20 so casually I didn't even realise at first. Alongside it is the only entry for Florence + The Machine, "Hunger" landing at #19. Unlike Eskimo Joe, that line which rhymes is not a lie.

It is a tall order for Ocean Alley not to underperform here with "Confidence". But maybe if the performance of their other entries is factored in, a #18 finish here is rather impressive for them. They sit alongside Mallrat's "Groceries" which was this game's instance of a song receiving an excessive amount of votes but not much in the way of high ones. In round 3 she had more votes than any other song, but none higher than #11, meaning that once we're down to a maximum of 8 votes, she lost a lot of support at once and fell down to #17.
