I can't remember if I ended up posting this here, this is my 2016 mid-year (with an indiscriminate selection of 2015 songs included - "Be the One" is here because it would've eventually gotten to #1 on my chart had that continued further into 2016). This isn't a super accurate reflection of where my 2016 favourites stack up now but I still love a lot of these songs and it's worth including
In an effort to [s]upstage everyone else's extensive end-of-year lists before 392 inevitably upstages mine with his top 10000[/s] accommodate as much music that I really enjoyed last year, I've done a top 500(/503 ) of my favourite songs of the year. It's been in the making since late December and has had a considerable evolution since my original drafts, but luckily with the extension of my list I'm confident enough with it as a snapshot of my favourite music of 2018 (including newer discoveries)!
[+ ] identifies a different version - another remix or version with a featured artist - that I enjoy about as much as the original - as opposed to something that is simply a [Remix] where I prefer that version.
Something to also clarify: I decided not to include "Treasure Island" and "Can't Do Better" because they were produced by Dr. Luke and unfortunately both artists were adamant about making his involvement in them known (admittedly "Heart to Break" probably should have made this list somewhere too but oh well ). Edit (2020): I didn't go to the same effort with Kim's songs in my 2019 EOY (or Doja Cat's for that matter - specifically "Juicy", "Say So" & "Rules" were produced by him) but this still sucks. [s]Because somehow my top 500 list from last year was insufficient,[/s] I have a list of honourable mentions that were part of my 2019 listening but ineligible for this year's list. I heard most of these (except for Act Up, Work It, Big Ole Freak & Lifetime) before I finalised my 2018 EOY and while they didn't make the list then, they stuck with me throughout 2019 enough to warrant a mention:
BEA1991 - V4 Cherry Glazerr - Daddi Christine and the Queens - What's-her-face * City Girls - Act Up Clea - Dreaming DMA's - Do I Need You Now? Holiday Sidewinder - Leo Holy Holy - Faces Jack River - Fields K.I.D - Too High to Try Kate Boy - Dopamin Kiiara - 1% King Princess - Talia Mariah Carey feat. Gunna - Stay Long Love You * Marie Davidson - Work It * Megan Thee Stallion - Big Ole Freak Metric - Risk Now, Now - MJ OFFAIAH - Private Show Peggy Gou - It Makes You Forget (Itgehane) ROSALÍA - BAGDAD (El Mal Querer continued to reveal itself to me throughout the year - the three non-MALAMENTE tracks from it in my 2018 EOY would certainly be higher, particularly QUE NO SALGA LA LUNA) Slayyyter - I'm High (her music was a real fixture in my 2019 music habits; luckily Alone, Candy & BFF were in my EOY but also not high enough!) Tinashe - He Don't Want It Travis Scott - YOSEMITE * Yves Tumor - Lifetime
One special mention is to Robyn - Ever Again, which I included in my 2018 EOY at a criminally low #268, which frankly doesn't do any justice to how much I adore this song, Honey or the (incredible) video. Another special mention goes to Let's Eat Grandma - Snakes & Ladders; I made sure to include both 9+ minute opuses from their album in my EOY and yet I still somehow forgot about including it (it deserved at least top 300).
And finally, 2019-released remixes/alternate versions which, I felt, gave a new lease of life to their 2018 originals: Allie X - Little Things [Analog Version] Hermitude feat. Bibi Bourelly - Stupid World [Machinedrum Remix] Lykke Li, Skrillex & Ty Dolla $ign - two nights part ii Rita Ora feat. 6LACK - Only Want You Robyn - Baby Forgive Me [Young Marco Remix] (the other at-one-point-weekly remixes of the Honey tracks were also enjoyable, I returned to this more I suppose - it's like an extended version of the original which is still stunning) SHAED & ZAYN - Trampoline
(I've had the original demo of Beyoncé's Sorry alongside these in the playlist I kept them in and it's too good not to mention here even if it was probably recorded a good three years before these)
