Last weekend The 91st Academy Awards (aka The Oscars) were held, and the winner for 'Best Original Song' was won by the Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson penned track "Shallow", which this week returns for a fourth week atop the ARIA Singles Chart.

"Shallow" originally spent three weeks at the top in Australia back in late October, and last week it became her longest running Top 10 single locally, and now it breaks a new record by becoming the song with the longest gap between No.1 berths', beating the previous record holder of 5 weeks between No.1 stays, to now be 16 weeks from last #1 appearance to returning to the top spot.

The previous record was held by Gabrielle Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" which initially went to the top on the 14th of April in 2008, then it was knocked off the next week by the returning "Low" by Flo Rida (for a 3rd and final week), after which a new Madonna and Justin Timberlake track in "4 Minutes" took over the top spot for three weeks. Then "Sweet About Me" reclaimed the No.1 throne for a further four weeks, giving it five weeks between No.1 berths. There are two songs which did it with a four week gap, being "Lonely" by Akon (11th & 18th of July and then 15th of August, 2005) and the most recent was "All About that Bass" for Meghan Trainor (11th to 25th of August and then back on 22nd of September, 2014).

The Oscar winning and performed song "Shallow" also increases Lady Gaga's weeks within the Top 10 to now 18 weeks, and her overall tally of weeks at No.1 increases to now be fourteen weeks, moving her up on the list of 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Singles: 1940 to 2019' from equal 64th to now equal 56th alongside Delta Goodrem (from 9 #1's), doo-wop act The Four Aces (also from 4 #1's) and crooner Guy Mitchell (3 #1's). And on the tally for this decade (where she has racked up five overall weeks at No.1) she moves from equal 26th to now equal 22nd alongside Snoop Dogg, Reece Mastin, Fun. and The Veronicas.

Now "Shallow" is also the eighteenth No.1 song in Australia that has been named 'Best Original Song' from The Oscars (since 1940), with the last one to hit the top occurring ten years ago with "Jai Ho" by A.R. Rahman and The Pussycat Dolls (from the film 'Slumdog Millionaire', 2 weeks from 27-April, 2009), plus it's the third this century, as back in 2002/2003 Eminem's "Lose Yourself" stay at No.1 for twelve weeks (it later on the Oscar). "Shallow" has also been sitting at No.1 on the digital chart for the past four weeks, where it retains its lead again this week, while it climbs back up to No.6 on the streaming chart.

The No.1 streamed track is the national falling No.1 song "7 Rings" for Ariana Grande (still at the top in both America and Canada for a 5th week), followed by the second week running N.Z. No.1 song in "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" (newly Gold (●) in sales) also for Ariana, with both tracks down a spot to No.2 and No.3 respectively. Also dipping one spot are "Sunflower" and "Wow" for Post Malone to No.4 and No.5 respectively, with "Sunflower" coming from the Oscar winner 'Best Animated: Feature' winner 'Spider-Man: into the Spider-verse', the track also logging its 18th week within the Top 10.

Scoring a ▲Platinum sales certification and climbing up two places to a new peak of No.6 is the Sam Smith and Normani song "Dancing With a Stranger", followed by the Billie Eilish song "Bury a Friend" which drops two spots to No.7. Khalid jumped into the Top 10 last week with "Talk", which this week is up one spot to a new chart peak of No.8, while another two place drop occurs for the Ava Max track "Sweet but Psycho" down to No.9, and Halsey holds onto the No.10 spot again this week with her song "Without Me", the song logging a 20th week within the Top 10.

NEW ENTRIES:
* #12 - Walk Me Home by P!nk is the lead single from her upcoming eighth studio album "Hurts 2B Human" (due April 12th) and it debuted last week on the digital charts at No.2, where it remains again this week, while overall this is her 45th Top 100 entry (42 solo, 3 as guest artist) locally.

* #44 - Exit Sign by The Hilltop Hoods feat. Illy and Ecca Vandal is the third track to be lifted from the Adelaide rap/hip-hop groups eighth and new No.1 album "The Great Expanse", following on from their two other current entries in "Clark Griswold" (returns at #85) and "Leave Me Lonely" (TW#11) and overall this is their seventeenth Top 100 entry since their first "Clown Prince" (HP-30, peaked Feb of 2006).

* #68 - Peer Pressure by James Bay feat. Julia Michaels is the first single from a forthcoming third album for the English singer-songwriter (no title or date known as yet), and his first singles chart entry since he hit No.40 with his third single "Scars" (peaked November of 2015), as no songs from his second album "Electric Light" (HP-14) charted in Australia, so overall this is his fourth singles chart entry here, while for Julia Michaels this is her eleventh overall entry too (5 as lead, 6 as guest vocalist).

* #75 - Don't Call Me Up by Mabel, who was born Mabel Alabama Pearl McVey in 1996 and she is the daughter of Neneh Cherry, whose twelfth released single becomes her first chart entry in Australia, plus she is the recent nominee of the Brit Award for 'British Breakthrough Act', with this track taken from her debut album 'Ivy to Rose'.

* #95 - Woke Up Late by Drax Project feat. Hailee Steinfeld is the first entry here for New Zealand four-piece jazz/R&B/Pop band, who started out as a duo of buskers playing Drums and Saxophone (Drax is a mix of those two words), while this song hit a No.15 peak back in early April of 2018, but back then it was just the band, now they have teamed with actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld, with the song returning to the New Zealand chart this week at No.35.

-------------------------==\/==------------------------
The Hilltop Hoods' eighth studio album "The Great Expanse" debuts at the top of the ARIA Albums chart this week, becoming the trios sixth No.1 album in Australia as they tour the country with Eminem as his support act.

"The Great Expanse" is now the 843rd No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2019), plus the 694th for ARIA (1983 to 2019), and re-arranging the 843, the album is also the 483rd set to debut at No.1 since the first in 1976. The Hilltop Hoods last hit the top exactly three years ago (29-Feb, 2016) with "Drinking from the Sun, Walking Under Stars, Restrung" (1 week), while they also went to No.1 with "The Hard Road" (1 wk on 10-April, 2006), "State of the Art" (2 wks, 22-June, 2009), "Drinking from the Sun" (2 wks, 19-March, 2012) and "Walking Under Stars" (2 wks, 18-August, 2014).

The Hilltop Hoods become one of just four acts to have racked up six No.1 albums in Australia (and the only local act too) alongside Michael Jackson, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, while their tally of weeks at No.1 has now increased to nine weeks, moving them on the list for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums (1965 to 2019)' to now 75th (up from 83rd) just ahead of Powderfinger and Kylie Minogue (both 9 weeks from 5 #1's), while on the list for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums; 2010's' they climb to ninth (6 weeks from four #1's this decade).

This is the first time that the word 'Expanse' has appeared in a No.1 album title, and only the second 'Great' after the February 1980 collection for Creedence called "20 Golden Greats". This is the first No.1 this year by an Australian, and overall this is the 229th No.1 album by an Australian act (solo, duo or group), plus the 376th by a group (local or overseas) , and The Hilltop Hoods are now the only Aussie BAND to have six No.1 albums, beating the five achieved by Powderfinger and AC/DC, while the only Australian acts with more chart-topping albums are The Twelfth Man (7 #1's), John Farnham (10 #1's) and Jimmy Barnes (11 #1's).

So after two weeks at the top the Ariana Grande album "thank u, next" drops down one place to No.2 here, while it remains on top for a third week in England and New Zealand and a second week in both America and Canada. The two big movie/musical winners at The Oscars this past week see their soundtracks sitting back to back this week, with 'A Star is Born' holding at No.3 and also picking up a 2x▲Platinum sales certification, while Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' set slips down two spots to No.4, but they do hold down the next two spots also with their "Greatest Hits" and "Platinum Collection" stable at No.5 and No.6 respectively.

The soundtrack for 'The Greatest Showman' is back up one spot to No.7 after Hugh Jackman this past week announced a world tour for himself this year, while current tourist to our shores Eminem is up one spot to No.9 with his most recent album "Kamikaze". Two further debuts to the Top 10 occur at No.8 with the second album for Sydney singer Julia Jacklin and "Crushing", which becomes her first Top 10 album and second entry as her debut set "Don't Let the Kids Win" made it to No.42 back in November of 2016. And lastly coming in at No.10 is the fourteenth studio album for U.S. prog-metal/rock act Dream Theater called "Distance Over Time", which matches the peak of their only other Top 10 album here in "The Astonishing" (HP-10, February 2016), and overall this is the bands' seventh chart entry here since their first appearance with "Octavarium" (LP#8, HP-81, June 2005).

UP:
* Eminem has eight albums within the Top 100 this week, the second of which is "Curtain Call: The Hits" which jumps up six places to No.11, while he also rises or returns with "The Eminem Show" (59 to 25), "Recovery" (92 to 46), giving him four albums within the Top 50, while lower down are "Revival" (returns at #66), his first set "Slip Shady LP" (returns at #74), "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" (returns at #86) and finally "Encore" (returns at #95).
* Ed Sheeran celebrates two years on the chart (104 weeks) with his third album "÷ (Divide)" back up to No.12.
* Red Hot Chili Peppers tour this past week helps boost their "Greatest Hits" album back up ten spots to No.19, while they return with "Californication" at No.98.
* Ziggy Alberts pedals up seven spots to No.26 with "Laps Around the Sun".
* The new No.1 album and current support act for Eminem helps The Hilltop Hoods No.1 album from this week in 2016 rise, with "Drinking...Walking...Restrung" back up twelve places to No.36.
* Maroon 5 just finished their tour here, and their "Singles Collection" set rises a few places to No.40, while other climbing best of sets are by Elton John (Diamonds up 46 to 42, Rocket Man stable at #63), Pink (stable at #50), Troy Cassar-Daley (returns at #62), Guns N' Roses (71 to 65) and ABBA (Gold & More 95 to 89, Gold 98 to 94).
* The 'Black Panther' film won quite a few awards this past week at The Oscars, and it's soundtrack is back up to No.54 this week, with the only other rising (or returning) soundtrack being for 'Forrest Gump' (back in at #61 after being screened).
* The Arctic Monkeys are touring here also, and their previous album "AM" is back in at No.56.
* Sam Smith rises in both the singles chart and on the albums too, as his "Thrill of it All" set is up thirteen places to No.57.
* Adele's "25" is back up to No.67, while her previous set "21" returns at #100.
* Imagine Dragons' "Evolve" jumps back up eight places to No.73.
* "Queen" for Nicki Minaj is back up nine spots to No75.
* The Chainsmokers recent tour here pulls their current album, "Sick Boy" back up four spots to No.87.

DOWN:
* All three of last weeks Top 10 debuts leave from the ten this week, with "Can't Say I Ain't Country" (HP-7, WI10-1) by Florida Georgia Line down fifteen spots to No.22, followed by last weeks highest entry of "Stolen Diamonds" (HP-4, WI10-1) for The Cat Empire plummeting fifty-five spots to No.59 and even bigger still is the fifty-nine place slide to No.68 for Avril Lavigne and "Head Above Water" (HP-9, WI10-1).
* The second and final new albums certification this week is for the Billie Eilish set "Don't Smile at Me" which is now Gold (●) in sales and is down two places to No.14.
* Travis Scott falls five spots to No.27 with his "Astroworld" set.
* Ariana Grande is back to only three albums in the Top 100 this week, with her second entry being her "Sweetener" set, down six to No.31 and her "Dangerous Woman" album drops down twenty to No.92.
* Sticky Fingers' newer entry "Yours to Keep" falls down fifteen places to No.35, while their much older set "Caress Your Soul" falls twelve spots to No.88.
* Cardi B is back down eight places to No.38 with her debut album "Invasion of Privacy".
* Rufus du Sol falls down eleven to No.39 with their set album "Solace".
* Falling best of sets are by Cold Chisel (39 to 43), INXS (44 to 48), The Wiggles (67 to 70), Crowded House (74 to 79), Phil Collins (62 to 81), Missy Higgins (61 to 82) and Green Day (88 to 99).
* Amy Shark drops down nine places to No.47 with her "Love Monster" album.
* Bring Me the Horizon drop to just below the Top 50 horizon this week with "AMO", down eighteen spots to No.49.
* Rita Ora is sitting at No.50 on the singles chart, while her "Phoenix" album is down eight places to land at No.51.
* The soundtrack for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse' is only down six places this week to No.55 as the film won an Oscar this past week for 'Best Animated Feature', while further dropping soundtracks are for 'Molly' (66 to 71) and 'Moana' (75 to 83).
* Shawn Mendes' self-titled set falls again this week, down eleven spots to No.58.
* Vance Joy's second set "Nation of Two" falls ten places to No.64.
* Jess Glynne's second set "Always in Between" is down twelve places to No.69.
* The Khalid EP "Suncity" sets a further sixteen places this week, down to No.72.
* 21 Savage might have climbed up on the singles chart with "A Lot" (TW-51), but his parent album "I Am > I Was" falls down thirteen places to No.78.
* Ed Sheeran's first set "+" falls sixteen spots to No.80.
* Elton John will not be touring Australia until late 2019, so expect his 1974 album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" to rise back up the charts then, but for this week it is down thirteen spots to No.90.
* David Guetta's "7" set falls down eleven chart rungs to No,.91.
* Two post tour drops occur for Keith Urban with "Graffiti U" (58 to 96) and Maroon 5's "Red Pill Blues" (78 to 97).
* Five of last weeks debuting albums leave the chart this week, with the highest dropout being "Triage" for Methyl Ethel (#11), followed by "SOS" for Millencolin (#32), the 2009 EP or mixtape for Drake called "So Far Gone" (#34), Dear Seattle with "Don't Let Go" (#45) and the Kiss collection "KissWorld - The Best of" (#60, which will most likely be back when they tour here in early June).

Very, very pleased to see 'Shallow' at #1 again!!
It's a pity that Illy and Ecca Vandal aren't credited on the new Hilltop Hoods single "Exit Sign"

Just wanted to mention Hijinx that 'Close To Me' is Platinum.
(Also, it says "Top 52 dropouts" above instead of "Top 50 dropouts". It's unimportant but I thought I'd point it out anyway.)
OMFG

YES!
Haha Nateboi is happy
That's intentional, my pithy protest at ARIA not counting Bene/Blueface (will potentially be top 53 next week courtesy of YNW Melly ~)

Oh okay, my apologies then. All good

Hopefully that situation is rectified soon. (Although I'm not sure I want to see a song named "Thotiana" charting )

info and chartifacts updated.
I've got a couple of questions for anyone who can answer them (preferably Bulion or Hijinx):

The paid:free streaming rule - Does it affect album chart or singles & supplementary singles charts only?

When albums with an immediate digital/streaming release have a delayed physical release, when will the pre-orders for physical copies (from JB Hi-Fi, Sanity, etc.) impact chart statistics - the week that they are ordered, or the week that physical copies are released?

Also, how does "Tequila" keep peaking? (Not that I'm complaining at all, I quite like the song). I haven't seen it charting on anywhere other than the Top 10 on iTunes/Google Play. Is there something I'm missing?
I'm not sure ARIA has ever disclosed it but I would assume that the streaming ratios would apply the same to albums, otherwise they'd have to collect 2 different sets of streaming data.

Fairly certain physical pre-orders impact the week they come out, otherwise there wouldn't be the sort of pronounced effect with them (look at Radiohead's last album for instance).

And "Tequila" is probably just gaining streaming traction. Adult contemporary leaning songs tend to catch on really slowly and gradually like that.
Nice to see Hilltop Hoods at #1 but wish they had leapt to #10. Another good reason to dislike Halsey.

Also don't get why Universal allowed all of Eminem's albums but The Marshall Mathers LP to make the overall Top 100 lol.
Last edited:
I can answer the second; a physical pre order doesn’t count as a sale until it is collected, so at best it would count on the week of release, but some people may not pick it up straight away.
ruins their streak of top 10 hits from every album since 2009 </3

(I blame radio dumping the song hard this week).
Perhaps it can go Top 10 next week? But that will be hard now that the album is out and Eminem's tour is over.

I prefer blaming Halsey.
I can't see it just because they needed the streaming boost the album release provided, but they've slipped back hard again, and nothing in the current top 10 is looking like giving up a spot.
Looks like you're right judging by Spotify's yesterday chart. Watch it being stuck at #11 next week
I worry that Chainsmokers song is going top 10 next week.
Thanks very much Hijinx and Bluezombie for answering my questions
I.E, the weirdest thing about the MMLP not being allowed on the charts is that on the Catalogue charts, its higher than SSLP, MMLP2, Relapse and Encore.

Bulion is The Marshall Mathers LP in the top 500?
Marhsall Mathers LP - Eminem #199 (W-395)

sorry I missed it b4
How can it be #199 when it's charting between Forrest Gump (#61) and Rocket Man (#63) on the catalogue chart?

Perhaps it's streams aren't included in the main albums chart but that's stupid.
Sorry, looking at it again, it's #199 on the combined sales chart (which includes compilations), and sold 387 copies (21 digital, 25 streamed). And on the Physical Albums sales chart it is #121 with 81 copies sold.

So I don't know why it wasn't included in the Top 500 for this week, as it would've sat at about #62 within the Top 100.

Thank you Bulion for the explanations once again.

Looking at Digital Singles Sales, it looks like we're now back to late 2006 figures. Damien Leith' Night Of My Life entered at #5 on the digital Track Chart in early December 2006 with around 1,700 units, which is probably what #5 sold digitally this week. It's kind of hard to believe that #5 was doing well over ten times that figure barely 4 years ago.

If digital sales keep declining at this rate, only the Top 3 will sell over 1,000 units at the same time next year (unless iTunes closes before, which wouldn't be surprising at all).
Is there a reason this particular week's chart hasn't been included on the site? Mainly asking because I'd really hate for it to look like Shallow only got 4 weeks at #1
The chart is actually there: https://australian-charts.com/weekchart.asp?cat=s&year=2019&date=20190310 ; it's just that it doesn't appear in chart runs (02/12/2018 is the same). Hopefully someone will fix them someday?
