Last week US brother-trio The Jonas Brothers scored their first Top 10 hit in Australia with their new song "Sucker", which this week leaps up to the top of the ARIA Singles Chart to now become their first ever No.1 song here.

"Sucker" is the 1084th No.1 song in Australia (1940 to 2019), the 519th for ARIA (1983 to 2019), the fourth for 2019 and now the first for the three brothers, while in Australia it is on the Island Records label, becoming that labels 14th chart-topping song and first since Dean Lewis' "Be Alright" (Aug 2018).

This is the second time that the world 'Sucker' has appeared in a No.1 song title, the last time was next week in 1991 (24th of March, 91) when Dimples D logged two weeks at the top with her 'I Dream of Jeannie' theme infused track "Sucker DJ". This new No.1 song is also the new chart topper in New Zealand, Canada and America, with the U.S. charts last placing a boy-band at the top in "Bump, Bump, Bump" by B2K back in 2003 (no 1D, 5SOS, BTS or Wanted hit the top there), while here the last boy-band to claim a No.1 song was 5 Seconds of Summer with "Youngblood" (late May 2018), and also the last siblings to hit the top here were The Veronicas in July 2016 with "In My Blood".

The Jonas Brothers become the 41st American Group to hit the top, plus they are also the 413th American act (solo, duo or group) to hit No.1, while "Sucker" is also the 697th chart-topping song performed by an America act, with another thing of note is that ALL four of this years No.1 songs have been performed by American acts (Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga & Bradly Cooper) and all four have also started with the letter 'S' (Sunflower, 7 Rings, Shallow and now Sucker).

Scoring his sixth Top 2 single in Australia is rapper Post Malone with his song "Wow" which jumps up four places to a new peak of No.2, while his fifth Top 2 and third No.1 song "Sunflower" with Swae Lee is back up one spot to No.3. All theses rises push down last weeks Top 3, with Ariana Grade's "7 Rings" down two to No.4 and her runner-up song "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" falling three places to No.6, while in-between those two is recent returning No.1 song "Shallow" for Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper which falls four spots this week to land at No.5.

Swapping places are "Dancing with a Stranger" for Sam Smith and Normani up one place to No.7, and down a spot to No.8 is "Talk" for Khalid. Kinda bizarre they finally decided to put Cardi B’s album out Physically nearly a year after it was released. It’s not like it’s even a special edition or has any extra tracks.

NEW PEAK #511ST WEEK @ #1521Jonas Brothers - Sucker

05-01
Top 54 dropouts:

LWArtist - Title
39Lady Gaga - Always Remember Us This Way
45Zedd & Katy Perry - 365
47Kehlani (feat Ty Dolla $ign) - Nights Like This
48Rita Ora - Let You Love Me
there were just over 50 sales between the #1 & #2 albums this week!!
Let me guess, Top 54 due to the following missing...?
* Blueface - Thotiana
* YNW Melly - Murder On My Mind
* Juice WRLD - Fast
* Bene - Soaked
Yep, it just keeps growing
Damn that's a shame about the sales because I would have much rather had a new #1 album then have TUN get it's 4th week
Praise to Ariana because Kerser belongs nowhere near number one .
Albums sales must have been absolutely low this week lol. No wonder Kerser got so close to getting to #1.

Low figures but I expected worse.

First time #1 in singles sales dips below the 3k mark.
Women, Weed & Wordplay - ChillinIt #70 (349 total, 14 digi, 335 streamed).

Aha, thought it might be something like that.
In regards to ongoing discussion about why the following songs aren't charting:

Thotiana - Blueface
Blueface is signed to eOne in America, who either are relatively inactive in Australia or do not have a HQ in Australia at all. I looked at the Wikipedia page on "List of eOne Music artists" and there was no-one really notable there; none of the artists listed have had charting songs in Australia for about 15 years at least (En Vogue, for example). This could indicate eOne is a sub-label or merged with some other label at some point. Either way, the fact that no certifications since at least 2008 have been by artists/bands currently signed to eOne indicates that they aren't really around much

Murder On My Mind - YWN Melly
I think this just come down to the fact that this guy is currently awaiting trial for a double-murder - as a result, his label probably doesn't want anything to do with him and would likely be trying to hide the fact that he's signed to them. This is purely speculative, but it's a perfectly understandable and logical reason.

Fast - Juice WRLD
I think this one just comes down to the fact that Juice WRLD is signed to Universal, who have a tendency to be, shall we say, slack across all areas. I think maybe when Juice WRLD's new album was released, Universal mightn't have been expecting any non-singles from the album to have been streaming enough to chart. Given the fact that Universal is lazy, this would explain why "All Girls Are The Same" and "Lean Wit Me" never hit the ARIA chart last year.
Also, a large amount of streams were coming from a music video in the Hot Hits Australia playlist, which ARIA don't count at all towards streaming data.

Soaked - Bene
Now this is the easy one to explain. Bene is signed to an independent label, who may not have the time or money to deal with important stuff like servicing songs to radio, applying for certifications, and making songs eligible to chart (which has to happen before songs can chart as per http://www.aria.com.au/pages/aria-charts-faqs.htm.
This would explain why "Soaked" has shown no sign of charting yet, which is a pity as its' a great song and would probably be a Top 30 hit by now . Independent labels have fewer resources and fewer staff then some of the bigger labels such as Sony or Warner.
So unless someone contacts this label directly, it's unlikely "Soaked" will chart anytime soon. (The label is Niche Talent Agency, I think. Although she may have signed with them AFTER releasing "Soaked").

So just for future reference everyone, it's NOT necessarily ARIA's fault!

In my opinion charting should be the default, so it is ARIA's fault. Surely it's more work removing songs that haven't been registered. It's ridiculous the way it works right now.
I absolutely agree charting should be the default result, but that's not the way it works unfortunately. For a song to chart, the label has to fill out paperwork which make the song eligible to chart.
And yeah, I imagine it's probably more work to do this, but then again ARIA has made their job hard enough already. I mean, for the single chart alone, they collect data from Google Play, iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music (and also count sales of CDs towards sales of singles to an extent). It's a hell of a job, I can completely understand why labels would have to 'apply' for songs to be able to chart. Oh well
It's all just really dumb when I can't think of any other chart in the world that gets this wrong. In turn it takes the wind out of your sails when you buy a song in the hopes that it'll help it sneak onto the chart, except oh, arbitrary fate has determined that's a no. These omissions aren't determined by the public so ARIA have no right to say that they're a barometer of what's popular.
Surely Australia isn't the only country where labels have to apply in order to meet chart eligibility rules? I haven't done my research but I'd be very surprised if Australia is the only country where this happens

I 110% agree with you Hijinx, it is silly, but unfortunately this is what happens. When you consciously purchase, download, or stream a song, you do so in the understanding (I mean, I imagine most people understand it) that each buy, listen, or stream is counted up along with millions of others week-to-week (or hundreds in the case of digital sales ) in order to discover which song has been "bought" the most. Problems like this make me wonder why I so passionately follow the ARIA Chart anyway, especially when it calls into question the validity of the chart (and gems like "Soaked" don't chart as a result )

To be honest, I'm not all that disappointed that YNW Melly isn't charting; I'd rather an inaccurate chart than a chart where murderers are at the top of it. (Quite surprised that Spotify HHA haven't added him to their playlist though, they've had no problems adding thugs and convicted criminals to their playlist in the past, I'm looking at you Tekashi )

ARIA has 99 problems and inaccuracy IS one
I mean, YNW Melly should still be allowed to appear on the chart. Society has enough problems when it comes to determining what crimes are and aren't heinous, and I don't think a music chart should be beholden to that. It also doesn't work when one of the arbitrary set of Christmas songs that were allowed on the chart last year was a Phil Spector produced track. The chart should reflect popular consumption, whether or not it's morally sound. It's like researching a statistical trend and throwing out any sample data that doesn't agree with your hypothesis.
The ARIA chart may have its flaws but it's nowhere near as bad as the UK chart lol
lol I agree, though at least their mess is consistent within defined rules
Why would anyone buy a song in the hopes it would make the chart? The first reason you would think would be to buy it because you like it and if it makes the chart it's a bonus. There's many many songs over the years i wished had gone top 50 or even top 40 but i don't think oh if only more people had bought it (even if they hated it) so it could chart
It can be for two reasons, I thought the other was obvious and didn't need to be mentioned.

Otherwise I'm a firm believer in collective motivation, that you should be willing to do something yourself if you expect others to do it. Dave recently got a UK #1 single and album because he encouraged his fans to help push him over the line, rather than just sit residing in negligence and letting the status quo perpetuate.
Hey Bulion, curious to know if Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Now That I Found You' has made any impact in the 500 yet whether it be this or last week?

Thanks
nothing yet guruN75.
I do think YNW Melly should be allowed on the chart, what I meant was that if this mishap meant that artists like him weren't charting, I personally don't have a problem with it.
(I am aware that sounds dodgy, dismissing the facts because I dislike them, but that's how much I hate artists like YNW Melly - they profit and have success in spite of/because of their violent pasts.)

I do think this should be stopped at the source though, curated Spotify playlists shouldn't feature convicted criminals like R Kelly, Chris Brown, 6ix9ine, XXXTENTACION, etc, etc. (you know what, I'll be 'controversial' and say Michael Jackson should be removed too). Heck, I'd even say that music education in schooling should involve/discuss these artists, so that children are educated about their personal lives and can subsequently make a conscious decision as to whether or not they'll listen to these artists' music as a result.

@guruN75, if the new Carly Rae Jepsen single charts, it'll chart as an EP/double-side single: i.e. 'Now That I Found You / No Drug Like Me'
Also Jesse_D, the main reason for consumers buying music is because they like it (sometimes it can be just liking the artist, not necessarily the song itself that motivates consumers to buy a song). Buying music in the hope that it'll chart is often the secondary reason.

When you purchase/download/stream music, you do so in the knowledge that this data is collected up each week with thousands of other consumers' listening/purchasing habits in order to calculate which song/album has been 'sold' (or what's known as 'sale-equivalent units') the most for the week. Thus, it can be frustrating when songs or albums have sold/been streamed enough to chart, and don't as a result of someone at their label being lazy/ARIA making an error/other music data minimising their charting potential.

Just a thought: I think there is an imbalance between established artists and yet-to-be-established artists that has been exacerbated by the inclusion of streaming data in the charts; not blaming streaming for anything, just an observation. I don't remember it being this bad when it was just Digital Sales and Physical Sales going towards Singles Chart data, but maybe that's just me
The thing I find is that once you start excluding artists for being problematic, you get into a slippery slope of things like how you define the cut off between a moral event horizon crime, and one that can be disregarded. And then you find there's inconsistencies where it feels like people are less willing to acknowledge it if they find the artist's catalogue too important for them. Is 6ix9ine really any worse than Jimmy Page for example? Or is he just someone people would rather get rid of because they don't like his music anyway. If people are going to choose not to listen to the artist(s), sure, but I don't think the chart should be taking a stand. Let the people do that, and if enough people still stand by the artist, then the chart should show it.
