The Jonas Brothers comeback single "Sucker" holds for a second week atop the ARIA Singles Chart this week.

"Sucker" also lands its first sales certification after three weeks of charting, now Gold (●) in sales, while it loses the top spot in N.Z., U.S.A. and Canada, only remaining at the top here for a second week. Also this week in 1991 was the only other 'Sucker' to hit the top in "Sucker DJ" for Dimples D (2 weeks from 24th of March, 1991).

The Top 10 tracks all remain within the ten this week with only a few slight movements to be seen, starting with the swapping of Post Malone tracks, as his former No.1 (and the first of the year) "Sunflower" is back up to No.2 displacing last weeks track for him "Wow" which is down one spot to No.3. Returning to the top in both America and Canada for a sixth week is "7 Rings" for Ariana Grande which here is stable at No.4 followed by another non-mover in "Shallow" for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper at No.5, with both this track and "Sunflower" landing their 21st week within the Top 10 (equal fifth longest in Australian Chart History).

Returning to its former peak of No.6 (up one spot) is the Sam Smith and Normani track "Dancing with a Stranger", which pushes down the second Ariana Grande track within the Top 10 in "Break Up With Your Boyfriend, I'm Bored" down one spot to No.7. Dominic Fike is up one spot to a new peak of No.8 with his first entry "3 Nights" while the new N.Z. No.1 song is the Khalid and Disclosure track "Talk" which here is down one place to No.9 and lastly holding at No.10 again this week is Ava Max with "Sweet but Psycho".

---------------------==\/==-------------------------
Ariana Grande's "thank u, next" album logs a fifth week atop the ARIA Albums Chart to now become this years longest running No.1 album (so far).

The set "thank u, next" increases Ariana's overall weeks at No.1 to now eight weeks, moving her up on the listing for 'Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums (1965 to 2019)' from equal 90th to now outright 84th, stuck between Metallica (8 weeks from 6 #1's) at No.83 and Barbra Streisand at No.85 (8 weeks from 3 #1's). While for the same listing for this decade she is stable at No.9 and one week shy of tying with One Direction's nine weeks at the top (from 4 #1's).

With this week being the anniversary here of the 1976 first No.1 single for Queen with "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2 weeks from 22nd of March, 1976), its fitting that the soundtrack for their biopic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is back up one spot to No.2, while their "Greatest Hits" set is also back up one place to land at No.3 and they further rise a single place to No.6 with "The Platinum Collection".

Also back up one spot apiece is the soundtrack for "A Star is Born" for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper and "The Great Expanse" for The Hilltop Hoods to No.4 and No.5 respectively. Last week U.S. country singer Luke Combs saw his debut album "This One's for You" crack one year on the charts, and he also did his second tour of Australia, which all helps his album to rise back up twelve places this week to land at a new peak of No.7 and the album scores its second week within the Top 10 (it logged a week at No.8 in June of 2018).

Also touring the country at the moment are The Eagles, who returned at #100 last week with "Selected Works: 1972-1999" which previously peaked at No.11 (Sept 2014) and this week that album bullets up ninety-two places to land at a new peak of No.8 and after 65 weeks of charting (since first charting in August of 2014) this is its first week within the Top 10. Holding at No.9 again is 'The Greatest Showman' soundtrack while last weeks No.8 debut for Juice WRLD and "Death Race for Love" is down two spots to No.10 and the album also entered at No.1 in both America and Canada this past week.

UP:
* A few country albums rising this week are by Florida Georgia Line with "Can't Say I Ain't Country" (31 to 14) and Thomas Rhett with "Life Changes" returning at No.58,
* The XXXTentacion album "?" cracked one year on the charts last week and this week it is up four to No.21.
* The Cardi B debut album "Invasion of Privacy" got a physical release last week after 47 weeks as a digital album only, and that helps the set to rise up thirteen places this week to No.26.

* With a second single charting this week for A Boogie wit da Hoodie his set "Hoodie SZN" is back up six spots to No.28.
* Ahead of the second Khalid studio album coming out soon and his two Top 20 singles this week from that new set, his debut album "American Teen" is back up six to No.29 while his recent EP "Suncity" is up nine spots to No.85.

* The Imagine Dragons newer album "Origins" is back up four to No.40, while their older set "Evolve" jumps up ten places to No.77.

* ChillinIt jumps up sixteen spots to No.54 with his set "Women, Weed & Wordplay".

12ND WEEK @ #1531Jonas Brothers - Sucker

05-01-01
Top 54 dropouts:

LWArtist - Title
41Juice WRLD - Robbery
43Billie Eilish (feat Khalid) - Lovely
50A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Look Back At It
I'm not sure "Wow." had its remix counted correctly. It had over 200,000 Spotify streams this week so I'm not sure how "Sunflower" overtook it again.

Meanwhile lol, a week after I realised ARIA forgot to count Juice WRLD's first album...it arbitrarily is let onto the chart now "Fast" still needlessly missing from the chart though.
I think its' mostly Universal's problem, in my opinion. The fact that that album hasn't charted previously (despite Juice WRLD having a massive streaming fanbase, in Australia especially) is clearly an indication the album wasn't registered to chart
Hmm I'm not sure. Despite the mess of the singles, they're usually a lot better with the album chart. I think if the album was selling enough pure copies to make the top 100 (a really tough ask so I'm not surprised he didn't), they would have let it on.

The other perspective is that if Universal was taking care of this, they'd have fixed it last week, when they were applying for his new album. It being the week after makes it look like ARIA realised there was an error after they were writing up on his new album, but by then the chart was already calculated.

And here I was going to celebrate Someone You Loved debuting; I will anyway. Fantastic to see it enter, hopefully it will keep climbing from here. Excellent song.
Gotta disagree with you there Harley, loving "Someone You Loved" at the moment! (Although I can definitely see why people would/will dislike it)

I've been a fan of Lewis Capaldi's for a while now, I'm very happy to see him get his first entry

I've also been watching Lewis's progress for the last couple of weeks in the post-100 chartifacts, I've been happy to see him rise for the last few weeks. He's got a debut album coming out on the 17th of May: "Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent".
I'm with you Bluezombie, it's a GOOD song

Oh okay, it makes sense now that you've explained it Hijinx; if Universal were organizing this stuff, it would make more sense to do it a week ago.
Surely if ARIA had found there was an error, they'd just subtly change the chart to omit the error? (I don't know if they've done that before, but I'd imagine it'd be better than making mistakes )
It depends on how it works. I don't know how exactly they get the streaming data from Apple/Spotify/others, but it's possible that they'd need to request extra data because they don't have his album track streams delivered to them (since they didn't think they needed it initially), and they might not have been able to get it in time for publishing. ARIA produce the chart roughly 24 hours before posting.

But of course, they could have also just not cared enough which is why they always seem to just subtly pretend that no mistake was made (wow look at this new Billie Eilish EP debuting in the top 20 on this random week, it definitely shouldn't have been in there months ago don't question it! Wow, Migos's album climbed in its 2nd week, that's unusual and definitely not because we forgot to count its streams in week 1! ~)

No Iggy Azalea "Sally Walker" anywhere? It was #1 on Youtube all week, thought it'd manage enough points in other platforms for an appearance in the urban chart or australian singles...
Didn't realise that ARIA make the chart 24 hours before updating it, that's a useful bit of information! I hope that the latter is what's happened, as opposed to ARIA just being lazy

Re the Billie Eilish/Migos mishap, I found it very annoying but at least both acts got decent Top-20 peaks out of it ('Don't Smile At Me' at #6 and 'Culture II' at #13).
Get ready for Billie Eilish to probably debut a bunch of album tracks in the Top 50 in two weeks time!

@Keri, "Sally Walker" has been in the iTunes top 40 for most of the week (I don't know about other digital sales platforms though), but it hasn't been anywhere on Spotify or Apple Music.
In Australia (and most other countries), without high streaming figures, it's practically impossible to chart (the exception is most tracks in the iTunes top 10 - most songs in the iTunes top 10 make the ARIA T100).
Hey Hijinx, just a random question: If an artist releases music on a label (say, a few singles and an album) and then changes labels, releasing new music under the new label, which label can certify the older material pre-change?

One example I can think of is Rita Ora, she released her first few singles and her debut album with Sony, and then switched to Warner. Would her old stuff be re-certified by Warner or Sony?
Only a guess because i don't have the foggiest, but i'd say unless warners acquired her back catalogue it would probably fall to sony to re-certify it. Someone who probably knows will probably correct me.
ftr I can't help on this one either as I don't pay quite as much attention to certifications (or labels for that matter), so I can't really recollect any historic instances to compare.
Bummer

If anyone knows, feel free to jump in. I realise that I probably picked the wrong thread for it, but oh well
Impressive run for Sunflower. I won't be too surprised if it reclaims the Top spot after the DVD release of Spiderman: Into the Spider Verse.

Really hope Sunflower doesn't retake the #1 spot, the charts are un-moving enough as it is (not that I dislike the song, I just don't want to see it retake the number one spot).

Hopefully the chart shakes itself up a bit in the coming weeks.

7.5k to be in the top 10 and 10k to be #2
Those album numbers for a 2nd week...ouch. Still on the positive side we haven't hit a record low...yet
ironic and unsurprising interesting digital sales for this week's #8 album
Hey guys,
any MJ album in the Top 200 this week?
Many thanks
Singles figures actually are very high in the lower parts of the chart

Bryc: I suppose you weren't around when the #1 single was doing around 4.5k, the #10 2.5k, #40 380 and #100 60 units lol.

Yeah it's kind of a symptom of the streaming age which distributes chart points much more to the lower end. For instance #1 on iTunes is selling 7 times as much as #20, but on Spotify #1 is selling about 7 times as much as #200.

But otherwise there isn't really an all-conquering hit atm. Most of the iTunes hits aren't really grabbing streaming numbers, and Jo Bros are only doing about 200K per day on Spotify while Ariana previously pulled over 400K with some of her recent hits.
#100 never went that low...

Streaming is not the way forward. We’re nearly in April & I have 15 registered hits for 2019.

Sunflower is #2 & Shallow is #5 @ 21 weeks. The chart is almost frozen. It’s extremely difficult for new artists to emerge. We have the same artists on loop, it’s a monopoly.
I’ll follow the charts as change is good. However we jumped off the digital bandwagon too quickly. The figures were solid.
I don’t believe having every song available at the drop of a hat is a good thing.
It’s a concern that streaming figures are going backwards already other formats haven’t done this.
I’m interested to know what direction music consumption will go to next.
^ Yep. When singles sales peaked in 2012/2013, #10 was probably doing around 15k units, which is twice as much as #10 this week but #100 was doing around 1.5k units, probably a good 500-600 units less than what #100 did this week.

And also agreed on the lack of huge hits at the moment. Sucker already seems to be stalling on both spotify and iTunes.
The lowest sales were MC Lars - Download This Song @ #100 98 units.
Are you sure? I remember the #100 single on January 23rd 2006 selling 63 units.
I’m quite sure, but I’m getting old so I could be mistaken. It sits in my head as it was humerous about the song that achieved the record.
Albums I recall being Bring Me The Horizon but I’m quite certain that would have been beaten for sure.
Yeah Bring Me The Horizon pulled 3600 which has obviously been beaten several times. I recall Anthony Callea taking the record in 2017 but I don't know if he still has it.
Interesting chart fact this week: I think if "Patience" makes the top 100 this week, Tame Impala will tie Weezer for the most top 100 singles without a top 50 hit. I think Weezer have 7 and Tame Impala have 6 currently. I'm not sure if any other artist has approached this stat (apart from KIDS SEE GHOSTS having 6 51-100 hits and barely 1 top 50 hit last year )

(of note, considering that ARIA credit Drake on "SICKO MODE", they probably should credit Tame Impala on "CAROUSEL", but of course that wasn't counted on the one week it might have made the top 100).
Disturbed's Indestructible holds the record of the lowest selling #1 album weekly. It did circa 2,150 units at #1 in April 2016.
I agree with nate that streaming is not the way forward but it's what you get with technology continually getting better and better. You get a new model phone out within a year these days. It's called change and while some aren't a fan of it it's here to stay.
I think it's the way forward because it's helping the industry to recover, unlike downloads.

MJ LPs in the charts this week

124 - Thriller (LW-126)
137 - Essential (LW-112)
206 - #1's (LW-164)
399 - King of Pop (re-entry)
482 - HIStory (re-entry)
To be honest, I'm not still entirely sure how I feel about the inclusion of streaming data; I'm in two minds about the whole thing.

On one hand, yes it is helping the industry to recover; but on the other hand, it's harder for relatively unknown artists (often Australian artists) to break through and get a chart hit - unless consumers and playlist curators actively consume music by these artists/add music by such artists to curated playlists. This is what prompts me to be undecided on the idea.

Truly hope "Patience" makes the top 50 next week, it's my favourite Tame Impala song yet!
Sheck Wes's "Mo Bamba" should be platinum or double-platinum by now
Just shows how slack UMA can be...
Shows how slack i am since i've never even heard of the track until now.
Here i will attempt (but probably unsuccesfully) to illustrate the downsides to streaming becoming the next big thing. Let's take a look at the top ten.

10 . Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho - in the top ten for 16 weeks
5. Lady gaga and bradley cooper - Shallow. Been in the chart for 24 weeks,21 of those in the top ten. Granted a boost in sales can be contributed to the oscars otherwise this is too long
4. Ariana Grande - 7 rings in the chart and top 10 for 9 weeks and doesn't look to be moving anywhere in a great hurry

3. Post Malone - wow. has remained in the chart for 12 weeks all of those in the top ten and again not going anywhere any time soon

2. Post Malone - Sunflower . First of all i care nout about who the other artists on the single are so i don't list them. Second, been on the charts for 22 weeks,21 of those in the top ten and like the upper two not likely to go anywhere anytime soon. A boost in sales can again be contributed to the oscar win for into the spiderverse which i recall was on the soundtrack

Streaming sales for them to matter need to count only for the entire song being played and not a short snippet. Also singles must be counted as singles and albums as albums if they are not already done so. By listening to shallow off the a star is born soundtrack should not count toward the streams of the single. Download the single for that to count. It is a more difficult thing on spotify i will admit because most times when you look up a single the search comes up with the album it's from but it is wholly possible i imagine to find the single version of the song.

In closing rather than tell me where i'm wrong, show me, explain why streaming works (the simpler explaination the better for me). I have an open mind,i am willing to listen to people so long as they are prepared to meet me halfway. Sorry to dominate this thread with one topic.
I don’t like that listening to a song can count towards it charting on the singles chart, as well as counting towards its parent album’s position on the albums chart. That’s the biggest flaw for me.

Aside from that, I don’t agree that listening to a song from the album version should only count towards the album, a better solution would be that if someone listens to consecutive songs from the same album, those count towards the album, but individual plays count towards the single.

Totally agree that the full song should be listened to for it to count.
The thing I'll just say is that the examples you've listed can somewhat be attributed to the musical climate in general. But notably, "Sunflower", "Shallow" and "Sweet But Psycho" are all in the digital tracks top 10, in fact the latter two are higher on the digital sales chart than they are on streaming chart, and the latter is only #15 on the streaming chart.

It's not currently the case, but for a while last year, the top 40 digital tracks chart had a higher average WI than the top 40 streaming chart, and this trend largely continues down the chart because it's very rare for a song that is 3+ years old to do better on streaming than digital sales.

With regards to what you've said about how streams are counted, you have to listen to at least 30 seconds of the song for the stream to count. Spotify have the back end data to confirm that most people who skip songs, do so before the 30 second mark, so if they make it that far, they probably end up listening to the whole thing. Sure there'll be some dodgy data counted, but if we're favouring activity over intent, then we can draw question to the no doubt countless iTunes song purchases that have never actually been played.

In the end though, this isn't really a definable problem? We'll get longer chart runs and less songs breaking through certain chart thresholds but is that genuinely an issue? Songs are still reaching wide audiences without them, hence gold & platinum singles without even charting. You could say that means it doesn't mean much to get the certification, but the revenue generated is roughly the same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was. Given that it takes ~5 million different streams compared to 35,000 purchases to go gold, that means reaching a heck of a lot more people than before, which means that the music is alive and well in the general consciousness. There are just more people who are listening to stuff beyond the charts than ever before.
Points well made and much appreciated on my end. I do like bluezombie's suggestion for the album charts. Quite a good idea. I think the streaming model can work,i'm not 100% against it,i just think like anything it constantly needs tweaking. You'll see ava max's new single go top ten i'd say in about 3 to 4 weeks because a lot more people know her now.
Great post hijinx
I'd be happy with a 50% listening threshhold for stream inclusion for songs over 1 minute, it couldn't possibly affect the chart too negatively. Also the single/album multiple contribution issue really muddies the chart despite showing what is popular, online music outlets almost always have the single then the album version, although interestingly Australia is a market that deletes online singles quite early on in favour of album contribution (we probably all know that) so I see that as a bit of a rort of the system tbh again popularity aside, to sum it up if an entire Ed Sheeran or Ariana Grande album is going to end up on the singles chart it entirely should be off the back of single sales only therefore releasing each as an actual single, if it gets deleted like in the physical world, it should not get singles sales only album sales, the same should apply to compilations.
Many Thanks Bulion for the MJ's stats.
