Forum - General: Forum Games - Quick List Vote Game Pt. 10 (3 Words)

Part 9: http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=viewthread&id=58505

This whole shindig has been going for over two years, but if you're new to it all, let me briefly explain: Quick List Vote Game (or QLVG for short) is a 5 stage voting game that takes place across a fortnight. The aim is to take a list of 100 songs and eliminate the bottom 20 songs per voting each round until there are just 20 songs left and a winner is crowned from that. Voting is done by selecting some 25-40% of the remaining songs each round and submitting it to my memo inbox before the voting deadline, which comes up at 6pm on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. Scoring in each round works as simple: regardless of how many songs you vote for, your #1 vote will score 40 points, and each subsequent song will score 1 point less, going down to #40 votes in round 1 scoring just 1 point. With each new round, you are free to adjust how many songs you wish to vote for (as well as the order), either for strategy or personal reasons, so long as it complies with the range that is set for that voting round. If you miss a round of voting, your previous round's votes will be re-used with a 20% penalty (so your top vote will get 32 points, #2 gets 31.2, etc), and your vote will consist of as many of your previously voted songs as possible, provided it doesn't go over the limit. This means that someone who voted 25 songs in round 1, could potentially be made to vote for 25 songs again in round 2. The 20% penalty stacks upon successive rounds. Meanwhile, to grant some purpose to your earlier votes, from round 2 onwards, I take 25% of a song's total points scored and add them to the total for the next round. In the event of a tie in points between two eliminated songs, if possible the tie will be broken by the number of (active) voters, and then the top vote received for the round. If that is not possible, the songs will be considered tied for ranking purposes. If this happens on the cusp of the elimination line (eg two songs tie at #80 for round 1) and the tie cannot be broken, all the tied songs will proceed into the next round, barring an extreme circumstance where there are somehow more than 20 songs scoring 0 points. In the interest of fairness, I will always lock in my own vote before the game begins, and I will be unable to adjust the order or proportion of my vote after that.

The list of songs included in each game is determined through a number of ways. Generally speaking, the songs will have to match a pre-determined theme, or feature on a certain list of songs that has been chosen. Typically, the theme will be chosen by a vote between multiple different themes, and from that, a voting process takes place in the Qualifying thread to determine the 100 songs that will compete in the next round. These Qualifying rounds typically open up on the Tuesday after a new QLVG is posted.

The only thing I'm changing (it's the same as the last thread) is that for the sake of my own exhaustion, not just because I'm also co-running another forum game at the moment with similar frequency, is that I may be more prone than usual to have week long breaks between games. It gets a little exhausting having to be ready to count votes, type results, type commentary, prepare lists etc every couple of days, and I think breaks in-between games could do me a lot of good.

#99. ZZ Top - Legs

#96. Florence + The Machine - Between Two Lungs

Points - 31
Current Voters - 3
Top Vote - #24

With what must be said is a pretty high total for last place, Max Graham's re-working of Yes's classic rock staple "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" starts things off. Also known to do quite a bit of legwork for lesser used letters is ZZ Top at #99, at again what must be remarked as quite a high score considering. Olivia Newton-John has now appeared in this game 6 times, with 6 different songs, the latest being "Heart Attack" at #98, just narrowly behind recent Like A Version segue provider K.Flay with "Blood In The Cut" at #97. An album cut turned title track with the re-release, Florence + The Machine's "Between Two Lungs" finishes 96th.

Top Vote - #19

#91. Bananarama - I Want You Back

Points - 36
Current Voters - 2
Top Vote - #6

A teaming that with a few more names would net a QLVG winner, MØ & Diplo have to settle for #95 with "Sun In Our Eyes". If you were wondering what The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus are doing here with their late inclusion, it's because there were two listings of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" in the initial list. This inclusion nets a #94 finish, behind one of You Am I's first hits, "Adam's Ribs" at #93, which manages 4 different votes but nothing over #30. Lady Gaga is as free as her "Teeth" at #92, alongside a throw back to the first official ARIA Chart, Bananarama's "I Want You Back" at #91.

One of the more peculiar chart histories is Whigfield. She has 5 top 40 singles in the UK (including a #1 hit), 2 in Australia, with not a single song crossing both markets. So it's a very Australian thing to note "Sexy Eyes" as Whigfield's biggest hit which lands at #90, behind the first song I ever heard in a Hottest 100 countdown, Blue King Brown's "Come And Check Your Head", making a slight upgrade from that at #89. It's been a while since we had a tie in this game, and there were actually two today (though one will go unseen unless you really dig deep into the stats in later rounds), Otis Redding matching up with Silverchair at #87. Along with it is the newest song in tonight's results (and 2nd newest overall I think), MEDUZA's recent top 10 hit "Piece Of Your Heart" at #86.
#85. Big Sean feat. Nicki Minaj - Dance (A$$)

#81. Delta Goodrem - You Will Only Break My Heart

Points - 49
Current Voters - 3
Top Vote - #17

The first of 3 Billboard top 10 singles for Big Sean, "Dance (A$$)" lands at #85. Next we have the meeting of so many worlds with David Guetta, Sia & Fetty Wap on "Bang My Head" at #84. If I recall correctly, one of the small handful of songs that hit #1 on the AMR Charts running concurrent to the ARIA Charts (where it did not hit #1), Diesel's "Tip Of My Tongue" finishes at #83. Depending on who you ask, you could well be getting some serious 2000s nostalgia via either Josh Pyke at #82 or Delta Goodrem at #81.

Making use of a somewhat loose re-interpretation of the original meaning, Mental As Anything kick things off with "The Nips Are Getting Bigger" at #80. The last of Foxes' 6 UK top 40 hits, "Body Talk" sits at #79, while Billy Idol also remains very still at #78 with "Eyes Without A Face". Calling to mind etymology mysteries (etymysteries?) is Birdy's "Skinny Love" at #77, while I will waste no time detailing Sum 41's "Fat Lip" at #76 (bortion! bortion!)

I feel like I've seen it in this game before, but it's actually the first time for Primal Scream's "Swastika Eyes" at #75. The Smiths are quite a bit more regular but it's the first time for "Hand In Glove" at #74, while Pete Townshend takes #73 with "Face The Face". Ricky Martin's first time making it through the first round is with "Nobody Wants To Be Lonely" at #72, while The Shins return with "Phantom Limb", making a sizeable improvement from its original #99 finish a few years ago, up to #71.

For the first time ever, it's a Lady Antebellum song that isn't "Need You Now", partly because that's already won a game, but also more importantly because it wouldn't make sense in this game anyway. "Dancin' Away With My Heart" takes them to #70. Hilltop Hoods can now lay claim to the very important stat of being the 3rd artist to land at #69 more than once in this game, now with "The Nosebleed Section". In a relatively modern set, Pavement are the old school at #68 with "Cut Your Hair", looking quite old compared to Ariana Grande's 5 month old "in my head" at #67. I also belatedly realised I finished typing the whole thing without mentioning Whitney, "Heartbreak Hotel" is at #66.

Calling for debate of whether a moderately well known Australian band or an obscure American band is more relevant overall, The Australian Radiators land at #65 with "Gimme Head". Birds Of Tokyo did as many other Australian bands did in the 2000s and discovered strings, with an entire live album of it, but following that put them at the forefront of "In The Veins Of Death Valley" at #64. Sharing a tracklisting with the current #1 single in the country, an observation that can only be said this week, Shawn Mendes' "In My Blood" is at #63. Ill-fated G.R.L. would receive news that "Ugly Heart" landed at #11 in the UK just shortly after news that member Simone Battle passed away, and they're here at #62. Finishing off is the opening track to Depeche Mode's excellent "Violator" album at #61.
The oddity that is cows having four stomachs is due to the fact that they primarily eat grass which is otherwise difficult to digest properly.

This is where I nonchalantly mention Top 15 to 24 votes and the need to do so by 6pm Monday. Next week is busier than usual for me so rather than taking a break in-between games, I'm going to do one mid-game. So it'll be 10 days until the next round is posted. I still reccommend getting a vote in as usual with in the next 3 days, because it would otherwise be very easy to forget. ACI schedule will be unaffected by this.

Things kick off with the two lucky songs that managed to just sneak through to this round...not being able to make a move from that and instead falling further behind the competition. But hey, "Eyes Open" and "Mama's Broken Heart" can at least lay claim to making it week...3(?) of this game. To put that in perspective, Tinashe's "All Hands On Deck" drops a few slots this round but her point difference for those two is pretty much unchanged. Kylie Minogue has two songs in this game and they're not the same song actually. It's her most recent #1 hit "2 Hearts" which kicks things off at #57, while fellow Australian Ali Barter is here with "Girlie Bits" at #56.

After a full set from the 21st century, here's a full set from the 20th century. Samantha Fox's #1 hit "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" kicks it off at #55, while another #1 hit from The Beatles rests on the other side of things at #51. Between this is Reef's inexplicable approach to singing on "Place Your Hands" at #54, while King Missile had a frankly absurd amount of votes in the first round for "Detachable Penis" which ends up at #53. The Angels also slip just outside of the top 50, and if you're let down by that, I know what you want to say.

Surprisingly never having been in QLVG before, Eric Carmen makes his debut with "Hungry Eyes" at #50. Arctic Monkeys are just slightly more familiar to the routine with "Mardy Bum" from their debut album landing at #49. Nirvana have the opposite approach as we go to their final album and its biggest single "Heart-Shaped Box" at #48, while At The Drive-In keep us in a hyphenated world with "One Armed Scissor" at #47. Former winners Flight Facilities have their 7th entry which is also their 7th unique entry, "Two Bodies" at #46.

One of his longest chart running hits, John Mayer gets his highest ever ("Pyramids" aside) entry to date with "Heartbreak Warfare" landing at #45. That's fairly easy to do though when he's only been in once before. Sugababes have a slightly higher threshold in keeping with their 17 prior appearances, but one of those was for "Hole In The Head" which now finds a distinct jump from its #73 finish in 2016 to #44 this time. James Bay's return with "Hold Back The River" ends up a little lower though still in a similar ballpark at #43. Australian '80s band Machinations are a first time entrant with "My Heart's On Fire" taking them to #42, while Silversun Pickups take "Lazy Eye" to #41.

Until "All I Want For Christmas Is You" inevitably does so, "Touch My Body" remains Mariah Carey's latest US #1 hit, and starts things off at #40. Though it far pre-dates Jess Glynne's career, which started off very strong with two big hit collaborations, and she also soon after scored a solo #1 hit in the UK with "Hold My Hand" here at #39. Gotye's 2nd highest charting single in both Australia and the US, "Eyes Wide Open" lands at #38, behind a much more well known set of eyes from Kim Carnes at #37. Sharing a producer with House Of Pain's "Jump Around" is Cypress Hill's very similar sounding "Insane In The Brain" at #36.

The biggest hit of 2018 so I dare say you might have heard of it, 5 Seconds Of Summer take "Youngblood" to #35 this time around, then we go back to around when all of them were born with Radiohead's 2nd album giving #34's "My Iron Lung". Noted spies Interpol have "Slow Hands" at #33, while The Temper Trap's are instead trembling at #32. One of the biggest Hottest 100 surprises for me is just how high Children Collide landed with "Jellylegs" in 2010, and to an extent I'm a little surprised to see them finish at #31 here.

Scoring a UK #1 hit, and arguably an Australian one 14 years later, The Streets is at #30 with "Dry Your Eyes". Perhaps the most inauspicious of the Hottest 100 double up entries, Luscious Jackson take "Naked Eye" to #29, and ain't that Mr. Mister at #28? Eurythmics were surprising me with the success here for "Thorn In My Side" though it's cooled down considerably to finish at #27, behind the ever present in this game lately Alanis Morissette with "Head Over Feet" at #26.

If you were expecting different results from other forum games, then I can report now that Merril has been bested by Take That again, as "Mouth" ends up at a still respectable #25. Queen's non-top 10 hit "Somebody To Love" that still peaked higher than supposed top 10 hit "Flash" (I am definitely not bitter about any quiz nights) takes them to #24, a slight decline on their prior rounds. Not as much as it is for Christina Perri however, with "Jar Of Hearts" dropping 10 places to finish at #23, making way for The Dø, who are big proliferators of this category of song, as for a long time I knew them for their song "On My Shoulders". They're here with another though, "Trustful Hands" landing at #22 which is a new high for them. Eskimo Joe have been consistently finishing in the 20s, making the final round once at #20, so they split the difference somewhat with "Black Fingernails, Red Wine" finishing at #21.
"Body" by Loud Luxury has spent more weeks on the Australian top 40 airplay chart than any other song in recorded history, and it's still charting right now.

Leveling the playing field with "He Wasn't Man Enough", Toni Braxton has now made the top 20 twice each with that & "Un-Break My Heart" which lands at #20. From Software's latest critical smash is also back in the top 20 for a second time with "Hips Don't Lie" at #19.

Falling a little shy of her best performance to date with "Lost Without You" (making #13 in 2017), Delta Goodrem does at least take "Innocent Eyes" to the final round for the first time ever at #18. For Gyroscope it's their first time across their whole catalogue, with "Snakeskin" just short of its Hottest 100 rank at #17.

No version of the timing we work with in this thread could make it so but we very nearly have a pairing of the first and most recent songs to make the ARIA Logo game Hall Of Fame, which also makes for a good omen for any future eligible songs that find themselves in the top 14. For the time being, the pecking order of 1988 & 1995 finds Taylor Dayne at #16 behind Take That at #15.

"Heartbreaker" has been in this game 7 times now and I am drained of the ability to talk about it anymore, but it does match its previous best performance from back in 2017. The Knife do hit new heights however. "Heartbeats" previously landed at #37, now they switch to a much more remarkable prime number at #13.
#12. Hole - Celebrity Skin

Though you might associate the two bands with completely different eras, only two years separate these two tracks (in fact Courtney Love is only 2 years older than Alison Goldfrapp). Hole looked poised for their first ever top 10 finish but fell short at the final hurdle, still at a slight new high of #12. To my surprise it's "Lovely Head" that takes Goldfrapp to the final round for the first time, falling just a little short of a top 10 berth.

Here "Behind These Hazel Eyes" is, in the top 10 once again, just like it was earlier this year, complete with a very strong opening performance at #3. Madonna manages her 7th top 10 finish to date with "Open Your Heart" having a steadier performance at #9.
#8. Lady Gaga - Poker Face

Surprisingly, "Poker Face" has never appeared in this game before. It proves worth the wait as it gives Lady Gaga her 3rd ever top 10 finish, just 2 places shy of her highest ever finish at #6. "Groove Is In The Heart" has appeared before, but it feels totally inconsequential as a #44 finish as it climbs all the way to #7. The constant run of #2 rankings is slightly misleading too, as it was a decent way away for the most part, but actually outscored the #1 song on raw points last round.
#6. Hunters & Collectors - Throw Your Arms Around Me

Another surprisingly untapped source, Hunters & Collectors have only previously appeared with "When The River Runs Dry", and show up much higher with "Throw Your Arms Around Me" at #6, poorly chosen ad placements be damned. Speaking of songs being used for purposes that feel inappropriate for the material, we have The Weeknd going full pop star...with his song about doing excessive amounts of cocaine. The top spot still eludes The Weeknd, as he's now finished in the top 5 five times, each at #2 & #5.

Something happened and "Head Over Heels" has become remarkably potent for Tears For Fears, admittedly I must thank this game for helping me grow enamoured with it. It finds its best performance ever at #4, just slightly behind "Shout" for the honour of being their 2nd most popular song in this game. Taking that #3 slot instead is Kylie Minogue, and it's a position she's familiar with, having landed there twice before as her highest ever finish, now twice with this one song.

It is debatable whether or not you can say that this was a close round. On one hand, the #1 was locked in place for the entire running, with even a 77 point lead in the first round. On the other hand, the final margin comes down to 21 points, 11 of those just built on from last round's scores. It does save having a weird winning song for this category, as the older of the young bloods takes The Naked and Famous to a new high of #2. Its loss comes at the hands of a song that it seems reasonable to be surprised hasn't already won one of these. Alas, Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" has come just a little short in its first two appearances at #2 & #4. When songs creep their way to a win you can speculate whether draining the pool of options via the winning entrants allows for it. In this instance the only eligible songs (I think) that have won before are "Hearts A Mess" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", so you can make of that what you will.
I'm spent! I will however try to run the entire next game on schedule, so I'll be back here with a new game on Monday unless my power goes out the night I intend to post it. That new game will be concerning the 2000s, a decade that's already boasted 3 winners just this year, so there's surely a lot of love out there for the era. The next day will be the qualifying game, which has seen overwhelming support for three word song titles, so that should be easy to define I hope.
I spent all of the 2000s in school and very musically out of touch so I can't pretend that this was really the soundtrack of the time. I'm much more familiar now and can recognise a big, diverse set of cracking tunes.

Voting was fairly spread out this time. So nothing came close to "Heart Of Glass"'s opening tally but the bottom end points climb up very quickly. Speaking of Blondie, Atomic Kitten start things off with their partial cover of Blondie's cover of "The Tide Is High", the first partial Blondie cover by a UK group to go to #1 there. There wasn't an extreme focus on the back end of the decade, but there are two in a row from late in 2009, with Daughtry's "No Surprise" at #99 followed by John Mayer's "Who Says" at #98. Australian Idol also-ran from an also-ran season Dean Geyer managed an ARIA top 10 hit and it lands here at #97. A1 could have predicted their #96 finish as just like Montell Jordan, they're time travelers. If you don't believe this claim, I can supply many photos of Robert Christgau.

Cage The Elephant had a US Alt #1 in 2008 but it wasn't "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" which is #96 here. Radio programmers were so despondant about this that they gave the band a further 7 #1 hits afterwards to compensate I imagine. Despite naming an album "Australia", Howie Day is not Australian and Australia didn't even give him the time of day. He did score a US top 20 hit with "Collide" which lands at #94, behind an actual Australian hit from Guy Sebastian, whose "Like It Like That" sent him back to the top of the charts which he would spend further time at in the decade that followed. The first of Anastacia's two entries is "Welcome To My Truth" at #92, while Kings Of Leon's productive decade is summed up here with "Revelry" at #91.

The funniest moment for me in the otherwise quite terrifying "Us" was not when "F**k Tha Police" started playing, but when "Les Fleurs" did, purely because I've been aware of the song being sampled by Kenneth Bager for nearly half of my life and have found great amusement in the fascinating spoken word delivered by that Julee Cruise. That sampled track, "Fragment Seven" is here at #90. Going further back for a sample (but not that much further actually) is "Barber's Adagio For Strings", this being William Orbit's version at #89. It makes for a trancey back to back with Rank 1's "Airwave" at #88. Pushed in the wake of Amy Winehouse's popularity is an extremely late 2000s artist, Adele, with her big hit "Chasing Pavements" at #87. If you were born in the late '80s to early '90s, then JoJo may have been the first artist younger than you to score a hit. If you're a bit younger it would have been Miley Cyrus, if you were a bit older it would have been Jordy. At the ripe age of 15 JoJo released her second album, with the hit "Too Little Too Late" which lands at #86.

I think the second Swedish House Mafia related song to make the ARIA top 50 (following Supermode's "Tell Me Why"), TV Rock's Axwell aided "In The Air" lands at #85, before Ivan Gough would go on to make a bigger hit with Axwell, and then years later it would be an even bigger hit than that. Destiny's Child's "Emotion" once finished in the top 20 but the extent of competition here means it lands at #84. With 4 songs on the list this time around, The Killers take their first casualty with "Human" at #83. The trance exodus continues with Plummet's cover of (unrelated I think) Plumb's "Damaged" at #82, and with I think the highest points I've ever seen for a #81 finisher, Jessica Mauboy's 3rd single "Been Waiting" lands at #81.

Madonna has two tracks in this list, odds are neither are what comes to mind first when thinking of 2000s Madonna but they've both made the top 80 so hey. "Hollywood" kicks that off at #80, followed by a series of UK hits that didn't quite make it to these shores. Girls Aloud's "Sexy! No No No" finishes itself off at #79 aha, alongside "End Credits", which was more of opening credits as the first top 10 hit for both Chase & Status and Plan B. Motorcycle's rush comes in at #77, while the first of two for Kylie Minogue is "Chocolate" at #76.

Somebody hit the lights because it's getting relatively late by the time I finish posting this. Christina Milian's first hit "AM To PM" takes her to #75, alongside some more early '00s pop company, with Sophie Ellis-Bextor at #74 and Stacie Orrico at #73. Battles make a chaotic cacophany at #72 with "Atlas", while Stone Temple Pilots are a much more chilled affair with "Sour Girl" at #71.

This round, Carrie Underwood was probably overtaken by at least one song to fall from a nice position into #70, a position that probably has no qualms with aggressive revenge fantasies. For another US top 10 hit that didn't crack the charts here, we've got Tamia's "Stranger In This House" at #69, which for my money delves into hilarious "It Wasn't Me" territory if you choose to take the lyrics literally. That could also turn The Roots' "The Seed (2.0)" into a cultivation anthem, but PnB Rock probably wouldn't approve. Eminem released the biggest hit of 2002 and also scored the highest selling song of 2002 though you might not agree with both of those titles belonging to "Without Me" at #67. The Drones' much acclaimed "Shark Fin Blues" finishes at #66.

Another former final round entrant falls considerably short, with Muse's "Knights Of Cydonia" finishing at #65. Darren Hayes has so many more successful solo singles so colour me a little surprised to see so much love for "Darkness" which finishes at #64. The Gaslight Anthem fall just a little short of their target with "The '59 Sound" dropping to #63, though not as big a drop as The Knife's "Silent Shout" which drops out of the top 50 to #62. While Joe & Dave are chart topping artists in the US & UK, in Australia that claim can go to George, whose longest chart running single "Breathe In Now" finishes at #61.
Pulp removed their synchronisation licence for "Disco 2000", meaning the song could not be used in trailers during the turn of the millennium

It would be a great chance to make obvious observations about "Lucky", which shot into the 3rd round after a bit of a slow start. It falters again however and finishes at #60. Actually the same can be said of Jennifer Lopez's "Get Right" which snuck into the top 60 as well and finishes at #59. Hoobastank's big round 2 jump didn't change their round 3 trajectory at all, and it cools back down to #58, and the reason is you, the voters. Timbaland sneaks into this list with "Morning After Dark" which was released right at the end of 2009 and I'm now surprised to realise was still in the ARIA top 50 in April of 2010. Mary J. Blige was not offered any such courtesy though "Be Without You" did very well Stateside, and finishes here at #56.

I've sat here for a good 5 minutes because I don't have a bit, but Debelah Morgan is at #45 with "Dance With Me". The Killers leave themselves with just one out now as "Read My Mind" gets to #44. Guru Josh Project takes their key philosophy to #43 with "Infinity 2008", while Toni Braxton is back yet again with "He Wasn't Man Enough" at #42. Snow Patrol had a big boon last round but they've been pushed back down to #41 with "Chasing Cars".

Adding to the tradition of songs sneaking into the next round only to find that accomplishment enough, "We Belong Together" finishes at #40. A precursor to the streaming era I feel is The xx's "Crystalised" which seemed to hang around on the last.fm charts for years. It lands at #39 behind The White Stripes' even more certified enduring anthem "Seven Nation Army" at #38. Beyonce's most popular song nowadays despite what her Spotify chart says, "Halo" lands at #37 behind one of Arcade Fire's two car songs from their second album.

Making for a peculiarly similar set of letters back to back, Alicia Keys has "No One" at #35. Christian pop & vocoder proliferators Mary Mary have been all over the shop with "Shackles (Praise You)" which finishes at #34, a somewhat similar story for The Strokes' "Reptilia" which nearly got itself eliminated last round and ends up at #33. There's some more post-punk revival at #32 with Interpol and stuff at #32, next to Danger Mouse & CeeLo's very successful collaboration on Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" at #31.

Strong early '00s vibe from this section as it starts off with two #1 hits only 6 months apart, Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" at #30 and Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" at #29. Right in the midst of all the inner turmoil represented in this set is the grand daddy of anxiety in Something For Kate's "Monsters" at #28. Delta Goodrem gets some form of revenge on a pop star who was still far off becoming an adult in this time frame as "Not Me, Not I" lands at #27, and Sia has one of her early brushes with fame in the form of "Breathe Me" at #26.

The Ting Tings take their UK #1 hit "That's Not My Name" to #25, which surprisingly means they got there before Kosheen, whose vocalist guested on a #1 hit a few years after that. Back as a group at the start of the decade, they land at #24 with "Catch". Narrowly winning the popularity battle on Spotify for songs about walking a thousand miles is Vanessa Carlton who lands at #23, behind some song I've never heard of at #22. Finally Yeah Yeah Yeahs make a mighty haul to get through to the last round...only to fall short at #21 with "Zero".
The year 2000 was a leap year, which in terms of years divisible by 100 only happens once every 400 years. Thus the year 2100 will not be a leap year.

The "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" of its day, if you can boast correctly remembering how Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever" is titled then you are a much more powerful mountain than I. Nonetheless on its run of even numbers with lots of factors, it finishes off at #20, right behind Destiny's Child circa their first album, which was actually their highest selling album yet it's the one without the classic trio lineup. Beyonce is not done here either as she has more to come later on.

Considering things from another point of view, Green Day have the first ever appearance of "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" in style as it lands at #18, it's their 8th time making the final round which is only slightly outstripped by Kylie Minogue now getting her 9th. I would be remiss to not mention that "Love At First Sight" finishes at #17 while its prior appearance in 2016 was at #38.

If you rule Beyonce as a technicality, then OutKast are the only artist to have two entries in the top 20. If you don't, then OutKast are the only artist to have two entries in the top 18. The 2nd ever appearance for "B.O.B." nets it its 2nd top 20 appearance, this time a bit lower at #16. Former winners Powderfinger take "My Happiness" to new heights perhaps in the hope of joining its Hottest 100 partner in dominance as a winner. It lands at #15 making it their 4th best performance behind that, "Burn Your Name" and "The Metre".

More explicitly, persistence pays off for Mika, whose "Grace Kelly" just keeps landing higher and higher. First it was #82, then #74, then #30, and 2 years after that it finishes at a new high of #14. Alongside it is the first ever appearance of Radiohead's "Pyramid Song", from their album effectively of unused tracks during the recording of "Kid A", more than justifying the price of admission by itself.

As previously noted, there is a Beyonce song in the midst and it's "Crazy In Love". Previously it appeared at #15 and now it's slightly higher at #12, a little shy of becoming her 6th top 10 entrant. Quite a bit closer is M.I.A., who can perhaps only blame tougher competition this time around preventing "Paper Planes" from returning to the top 10 and finishing at #5.

Persistence continues to pay off. Dixie Chicks always make the final round with "Not Ready To Make Nice", but it finishes now in the top 10 for the first time ever. Kelly Clarkson can also now boast 3 different top 10 finishers with "Because Of You" taking a big step up from its #28 finish earlier this year to #9. She otherwise has made the top 10 with "Behind These Hazel Eyes" at #7 and "Breakaway" at #6.

The biggest seller of 2000 and thus for a time, the biggest song of the decade thus far, Anastacia lands at #8 with "I'm Outta Love", and we are not outta love for the start of the decade either, as at #7 it's the first ever appearance for Fragma's "Toca's Miracle", a song that in my head feels a tiny bit forgotten just because drama surrounding the song keeps it from being distributed officially anymore, but this #7 finish would do well to dispel that myth.

True to the song's form, Franz Ferdinand set the stage for an endless run at #12, before abruptly shifting to #6 and not looking back. The Killers score their highest entry with a song that surprisingly has never appeared in the game before, but made a decent run to make them the first artist to win the game 3 times, as "Somebody Told Me" finishes at #5.

If nothing else, Aaliyah is true to the song's mantra as this is now the 5th time that "Try Again" has appeared in the game. It manages an equal high of #4, so instead the role of form growth really goes to Augie March's "One Crowded Hour". The song has gone from a #32 finish, to #11, to now finishing all the way up at #3.

I don't typically allude to performances of linked songs until both have been reached, otherwise it may well spoil that the other is not far off. So I could have remarked that actually OutKast's two entries were locked in an unpredictable duel the whole way back when we reached "B.O.B.". However they've made this way of thinking somewhat redundant because "Hey Ya!" as picked up massive momentum in the final round to climb all the way up to #2. This is just enough to narrowly beat their previous high of #3 with "Ms. Jackson", which is interesting in itself because "Hey Ya!" had otherwise only previously finished at #33. There is not much use in lamenting how close they were to taking the top though, because in reality they weren't, and nobody ever was. P!nk has been absolutely destroying the competition with "Who Knew" this entire way and there looked to be no way that was going to stop. Everyone who voted for it could have vanished in the last two rounds and it probably still would have won.
I'm beat so I'll just say a quick thanks for voting. The next game is the 3 word song titles, and the next qualifying game is #21-#30 peakers. I'm a bit exhausted so I'll take a week off and return this on Sep 9th.

It's yet another round that ramps up the scores rather fast. So every song has gone into double digits. We start off with the early '80s for Adam and the Ants, and then go even further back to the early '70s with Spectrum, a song older than most of the other artists here. Especially Lorde who is less than half as old as it with a track from her debut album, "White Teeth Teens" at #98. With the 13th of his 16 country #1 hits, Dierks Bentley lands at #97, and we stay in the mid-2010s again with Skrillex protege Jai Wolf and his track "Like It's Over" at #96.

Now it's not just the relative eras that are the same, but even the titles too. The first of two for Mariah Carey is "Shake It Off" at #95, which amusingly lands right next to an unrelated Taylor Swift song. One of her lower charting pre-album singles "State Of Grace", though now one that has a pretty big reputation. To complete this trio, we have the similarly named "Show U Off" from Chairlift's last album at #93. The rest of these tracks are from not just 2010s songs, but entirely 2010s artists as well, with DMA's at #92 and Ariana Grande at #91.

In the time since she appeared on the ARIA Logo game, I have the exciting news that Toni Pearen's album has been put on Spotify! From there we have "I Want You" at #90. It's closely passed by the always available Haim with the title track to their first album at #89. In fact all of these are close as they're only separated by a total of 4 points. Lupa J's recent ACI #1 hit "Pull Me Under" lands at #88, and then if nothing but proving how tough this round is, blink-182's enduring "Dammit (Growing Up)" is at #87, followed closely by Lil Nas X's monster hit "Old Town Road" at #86.

From "Revolver" is the classic Beatles track "Tomorrow Never Knows" at #85, known for inventing The Chemical Brothers. Made famous in Europe via a remix and a cover, the original "I Follow Rivers" by Lykke Li lands at #84. 15 years ago today, Ciara was at #1 in the US with her first single "Goodies", and she followed it with "1, 2 Step", which spent a lengthy time at #2 assumably because Missy Elliott is not allowed to be credited on a US #1 hit. We nearly had a tie for 80th for the first time in ages, but instead it landed with two songs at #81.

Well Ratcat have been looking around for some kind of sensation and I've been looking around for some kind of way to start this...oh that'll work out because "Don't Go Now" is #80. We're then in ballad city with Lior at #79 and Lewis Capaldi at #78. Sigma flip a sample from a Kanye West track from a year ago with not the budget to get the original vocal take, but the prowess to go to #1 in the UK regardless with "Nobody To Love" at #77. Staying in 2014 is the 2nd most streamed song from the Hunger Games Mockingjay Pt. 1 soundtrack, with Major Lazer & Ariana Grande teaming up on "All My Love".

The first of two Eurythmics songs, and the first of two "Who's That Girl" songs is at #70. Gorillaz have the melancholy of being eliminated but landing at #69 with "On Melancholy Hill". Not to be confused with the similar sounding late '90s artist, but absolutely to be confused with the totally different sounding artist of the 2010s who is the same artist...Robyn lands at #68 with "Show Me Love". On the other hand we do have a late '90s artist with a much more modern release as Daft Punk's latest new album that you should check out if you get the chance has "Fragments Of Time" which lands at #67. Just ahead is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with "Into My Arms" from that album I need to listen to soon because it was released in 1997.

Massive Attack released their highly influential debut album in 1991, and from that we've got "Safe From Harm" at #65. U2 sadly named their song after one of the 4 days that they can never be eliminated on so they finish on bloody Friday at #64. We stay in the late '80s/early '90s for a bit longer with Public Enemy's 3rd album giving "Fight The Power" at #63, and then George Michael's 2nd album from the same year giving his last solo Billboard #1 hit "Praying For Time" at #62. Then I get the tease as we finish off with what I would say is near perfection in tension build/release (and several other things) with Samsaruh's first single "Golden To Thrive" at #61.
