DISCUSSION FORUM
Forum - Other Charts: Australia - Non ARIA - Triple J Hottest 100 of the 2010s (voting)

The dates have been announced so I am making the thread. https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/musicnews/triple-j-hottest-100-decade-dates-details-voting/11927800
Voting period: Tuesday February 11-Monday March 9
Countdown day: Saturday March 14

Get excited, I guess.
I've been working on my shortlist. Started at 415 songs, now I'm down to 290.
Does it say how many songs you can vote for?
Bridget tweeted about it in a way which implies you get...11 votes, but I assume it's a typo in some way and you get 10 votes https://twitter.com/BHustwaite/status/1224821498017239040
20 songs (or even 11) would be good but assume it will be 10. Have a 207 song shortlist and growing...
I have 50 songs ranked as part of another countdown I'm doing on FB. Just got to make sure the Top 10 are all eligible and that I don't find any other great songs from 2019 I missed earlier as part of my 2019 Hottest 200.
I hope Warm Tunas leaves it alone. I could do without the temptation of spoilers for a change.

I know there'll probably be a predictions thread soon enough, but any early picks for #1? I think Gotye's got a pretty good chance.
This is going to be incredibly difficult to pick just 10 songs! All I'm hoping for is Daft Punk to make Top 10 with any song.
Warm Tunas have said they are going to be running. It will be harder to predict though.

I think Goyte, Flume and Billie Eillish wold be my early thoughts for #1
Really excited for this but it will be a nightmare to pick just 10 songs.
Off the top of my head, I have 5 songs I'll definitely be voting for. Haven't thought much beyond that, though
The Less I Know The Better & Riptide are both very strong contenders I think. Tame Impala will split their vote a lot, but so have the last 4 Hottest 100 winners anyway.
I think Innerbloom is a dark horse looking at some of the FB forums
I'm intrigued by songs that never appeared in Hottest 100s that end up making these Hottest 100s. I think Innerbloom is going to be one. Does Taylor Swift get her moment in the sun as well?
It's a longshot, but like Innerbloom, I think Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" stands a chance of at least making the lower reaches of the Top 100 - it seems to have had some delayed acclaim in topping a lot of end-of-decades lists. From memory it was shortlisted in 2010, but I don't think it even made the 101-200.
"Dancing On My Own" was #142 in 2010 but I'm skeptical that any sort of media acclaim will convince enough people to vote for it (and there's a conversation to be had as to whether dance pop could ever garner enduring respect as opposed to the rock/alt stuff which tends to re-rank consistently in all time lists), but it would be a cool surprise!

If we're talking songs without a top 200 ranking, I think Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Know" has a decent chance, as it's far eclipsed the rest of their discography in popularity. It reminds me of The Kooks' polling in 2013 with "Naive".

Innerbloom was robbed in 2015 and I am 500% all in for it.
Gotye would definitely have to be a top favourite, but looking back at individual years I think all of the top 3 from 2013 could potentially be in the top 10. Basically everything Tame Impala have released since Hall Full Glass of Wine will be eligible, so that might hurt The Less I Know The Better's chances but I could still see that doing well. I don't think the vote splitting will hurt them as much as the Hilltop Hoods or Peking Duk for example.

I'm most interested to see how artists like Lana Del Rey and Kanye West will do. Both have multiple songs which could easily be featured highly, but which ones will people vote for? There could be a few surprise omissions as a result.

As for non-JJJ acts, I wouldn't be too surprised if we end up seeing Taylor Swift or Adele get an entry, but I doubt Ed Sheeran or Lady Gaga will get enough votes.
Thanks Hijinx - I thought if anyone would know if it made 101-200, it'd be you...

Will also be interesting to see how the "controversial" #1s of the decade go - "Thrift Shop" seems to be the 2nd most hated of all time after Offspring, yet I think it'll still make it in there on the basis of its cultural significance and popularity through the decade. It was notable how songs from the 2012 countdown fared in the 2013 Past 20 Years list only a few months later - alt-j's "Breezeblocks" had been #3 for 2012 but made it in higher than Of Monsters & Men "Little Talks" which had been #2, and "Thrift Shop" failed to make it in.

Then there's "Hoops" - I think The Rubens' strong fanbase will get it in there, not as high as other #1s though.
Yeah there are a lot of different factors to consider. Perhaps it might not matter a lot, but Tame Impala's new album is out in 7 days, which makes them very fresh in the voting mind (next to Gotye who outside of The Basics, hasn't released an album in over 8 years). Gotye has a lot of esteem still I imagine, and if we go back to that 2013 countdown, he was *by far* the highest 2010s entrant and that was with Hearts A Mess splitting his vote which is no longer in consideration.

I was also weighing in on Riptide recently because it's a really fascinating case. A lot of people are angry about it winning ahead of Lorde, Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys, which gives it not a lot of goodwill from those large fanbases (but it'd be beloved a year earlier if it were the song that kept Thrift Shop from #1, lol), but despite that it has clearly endured long beyond anything else from that list. It's *still* in the Spotify top 200, and outside of Christmas for about 2 days a year, it has never left it for what is closing in on 7 years now. Impossible to say how much of it is triple j listeners, but it's a perennial staple of the 2010s for a lot of people and I'd be shocked if it's not top 3.

Hoops has a similar case which is why I'm really interested to see what it does. Everyone perpetuates the myth that it won on 10th votes, but having read thousands and thousands of instagram posts that year, I have no doubt in my mind that it was just as cherished as song of the year as King Kunta was. Unlike Riptide though, it hasn't remained a fixture, and The Rubens' latest single couldn't even crack the Hottest 100 (it hitting the ARIA top 50 tomorrow likely will keep them in the conversation though), so I'm really curious what happens with it.

Watch Big Jet Plane go all the way to #1 again, lol

One song that never made the top 200 that I feel has a good chance is Avicii - Levels, it's been mentioned a few times on air already. I want to say Middle Kids - Edge Of Town has a small chance of getting in too considering a Like A Version of it made it in afterwards and they themselves got in later with a seemingly less popular song of theirs.

I still think Thrift Shop will be the only #1 to not make it but maybe triple j constantly making fun of it will have a reverse psychology effect. Regardless I wouldn't be surprised if Can't Hold Us (#181 in 2012) gets more votes. Aside from Little Talks the only #2 I'm fairly confident could beat the song originally ahead of it is High. I would say King Kunta has a chance but I'm guessing HUMBLE. will take a lot of votes from it.
What about Pumped Up Kicks? If I remember well, it landed low in the 2010 countdown almost a year before it became a big chart hit. It seems to still be very popular these days.
I believe Pumped Up Kicks will definitely make the top 100 for sure. As for Thrift Shop, I think people will definitely meme it to the countdown.

What's the chance of Dance Monkey making it in (and if so, what sort of position)? I reckon lower 40s at best.
I think it will be interesting to see how some of those international artists that were widely beloved almost solely in Australia such as The Wombats, Glass Animals and BROCKHAMPTON poll in the list.

Also, how will Unearthed artists fare in this list? I would expect the usual suspects like Flume, The Rubens and perhaps Boy & Bear - and I would hope that some retrospective appreciation for Courtney Barnett would not go astray.

There's an interesting perspective to be gained from this. Like, do we undersell artists who have seen diminishing returns in recent years (Boy & Bear, The Jezabels, Matt Corby etc) as not really having thriving fanbases any more to vote them in, or is the fanfare still there, just not for their newer material. It makes me wonder if the people who properly witnessed the decline in popularity of The Smashing Pumpkins was ever surprised to see their imperial era still always represented in these lists, or if there's a certain bar of notoriety that artists beyond the triple j realm can pass.

A lot of the time the Hottest 100 can feel like a current checklist of fanbases (eg here's what Skegss, Hockey Dad, DMA'S put out THIS year) but does that carry over to an entire decade with only 10 songs to pick?
I'd agree with that, fanbases and continued popularity probably aren't as influential for a full decade list. I would be surprised if The Jezabels and Boy & Bear get anything near the same support they would have had 5 years ago, but Matt Corby might fare better with "Brother" seeing as it was by far his biggest hit.

The last "all-time" list (2009) also had a shocking lack of female musicians. I don't see the disparity being quite so big this time around but it's worth noting that may be a factor again.

Side-note: I don't think Thrift Shop will miss out on the 100, but don't expect it to be top 10 either.

I'd be surprised if Thrift Shop came anywhere close to the Top 10 (Talk Is Cheap is another #1 I don't think will be that high as well) and wouldn't be all that surprised if it missed the 100 all together.

The 20 year and last all-time countdown were skewed towards 90s alternative and rock, all of which are not eligible this time around. I'm interested if similar type bands (Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Tame Impala) do as well or will the pop/dance/hip hop artists dominate (Flume, Billie Eillish, Kendrick). Also Australian acts haven't done as well in these type of lists in the past, can see this as being the same.
The thing with female musicians is something I touched on briefly in my not-brief Tones And I review. I feel like it has to at least get better than it's been before. Lana Del Rey sneaking onto the 2013 list might be a preview to expect her a lot higher this time around, while unified consensus (around dudes) is less certain (maybe in part because there's less of a rock & roll hegemony).

Chet Faker / Nick Murphy is another interesting case (which I probably should have thought of yesterday). I feel like the name change left people disillusioned or out of the loop, yet in the years leading up it was as if he could do no wrong. I feel like a lot of people will reminisce the earlier lists and remember just how much they liked Talk Is Cheap.

I don't count out Do I Wanna Know? as a top 10 contender. I honestly expect it to beat Get Lucky, and maybe Royals.
I can totally see Riptide win this.
I think the more recent songs will have an advantage in this countdown, as they have in all of the other All-Time countdowns, so I'd expect Billie Eilish and Tones And I to make the list, and fairly high too.

Speaking of Lana Del Rey, two other songs I think have lasting appeal and will do well are Video Games and Midnight City by M83.

I have 6, 11, 12, 12, 11, 10, 9, 10, 10 and 9 songs from the years respectively. That seems like I may be underestimating the more recent years but these are the songs I came up with

Innerbloom is the only non-top 100 one I've included, but I think What You Know, Levels, Dancing On My Own and Can't Hold Us are good shouts. I also just thought of Waves (Dean Lewis) which missed the top 200 as its release was in 2016 but its airplay and success were in 2017 (Kiiara's Gold was the same case a year earlier but I'm sure that has zero chance, unfortunately). I could also see Take Me To Church making the top 200 (if there is a top 200) even though triple j never played it.

My picks for The Wombats, The Jungle Giants, Ball Park Music, Violent Soho, The Amity Affliction and especially Sticky Fingers' biggest songs are basically just guesses - I expect they'll all get a lot of votes as artists, but suffer from having no obvious song to rally around. It might help if they promote a specific one on social media.
I noticed today that both Ball Park Music and Violent Soho have singled out specific songs ("It's Nice To Be Alive" and "Covered In Chrome" respectively) that they've started campaigning for on social media, so they're one step ahead of us on the split vote factor. I think The Wombats "Tokyo" will probably be the collective default pick there too.

Will be interesting to see how LAV's go, I've got a feeling none will make it in.

I think these retrospective countdowns really do tap into nostalgia, as people reminisce about the big songs that they really loved and the memories they have from that period, so I think there'll still be a strong representation of older songs. Songs like “1979” extended beyond just a diehard Smashing Pumpkins fanbase voting as it’s a classic song loved by many of that generation.

So much of it depends on how tastes can evolve after just a few years – "Wonderwall" was a clear favourite and obvious choice for #1 in 1995, but it was nowhere to be seen by 1998’s all time countdown due to its saturation, the direction Oasis had taken, and a lot of people thinking the Gallaghers were twats. Then it re-emerged for the 2009 list and topped the 20 years poll, due to the fact that the backlash had faded with time and it was once again considered as a classic song, re-embraced by a younger generation who took to a tendency of playing it at formals, weddings, etc. The Cranberries “Zombie” had a similar fate, as did even a few big chart songs that were considered embarrassing choices a few years after making high placings in annual countdowns (“Gangsta’s Paradise” and “Teenage Dirtbag”) re-emerging in the 20 year list as somewhat of a surprise.

That said, I think it’s goodbye to Little Red and Ou Est Le Swimming Pool...

Thank you thewitness for compiling the list of songs on the shortlist that never made any of the Hottest 100s.

Was it possible to vote for these songs back in the day or did Triple J decide to include them because they got airplay on Triple J later on?
It's a mix of both I think. Some very big airplay hits that just didn't make the cut, some artists who only later started getting triple j airplay, some where popular standing just wasn't there at the time.
So songs like Rolling In the Deep, Run The World, Berzerk, Cheap Thrills or We Found Love got airplay On Triple J? That's interesting.
Oh sorry I may have generalised too much. I don't think any of them would have gotten played much at all (except maybe on House Party/DJ sets). I remember triple j playing the Jamie xx remix of Rolling In The Deep before it really took off though. Some might be added just as vaguely essential 2010s cuts, although there's also shades of 'one person on the editorial team really wanted it' :p
that... was difficult

alt-J - 3WW
Arcade Fire - Reflektor
Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine?

agreed, not easy. my votes:

The Naked and Famous — Young Blood
Groove Armada — Paper Romance
Robyn — Dancing On My Own
Gotye — Somebody That I Used To Know {Ft. Kimbra}
Florence And The Machine — Shake It Out
Skrillex — Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites
Tonite Only — We Run The Night
Knife Party — Internet Friends
Vampire Weekend — Diane Young
Pnau — Chameleon

just realized, only one song after 2013...
Also remember other factors which will influence voting like current album launches, tours and of course those making the news on social media.
Remember in 2009 MJ influenced the countdown on the back of his untimely death but U2 were nowhere to be seen but were massive in the 1998 countdown.

Only bought this up as i'm archiving The Weeknd - Beauty Behind Madness and I would've thought he'd struggle to make the 100 but with new album in the pipeline he may have a few entries in namely 'Can't Feel My Face' & 'Starboy'.

First Warm Tunas is up

Very small sample so far - I think it's likely to change significantly.

Are we avoiding spoilers on this thread?
Yeah, was just going to post a reminder - I and some others are following WT, but not everyone is so please keep spoilers out of the thread (or hidden behind links)

Geez, picking 10 songs is tough.

I am surprised to see Gold by Kiiara not on the list when the song was in the top 5 weekly most played list on JJJ for a few weeks and was left off the original hottest 100 lists for some strange reason. Yet Run The World is included and didn't even feature in the weekly top 50 most played list once. Same with Adele and Eminems songs.

It would have been funny if they included Shake It Off on the list after the drama it caused. I am surprised no one has sparked controversy about it not featuring and when others are included like Adele.
The plot twists continue as triple j has revealed that the 200-101 will be aired throughout the week prior to the broadcast of the top 100. https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/news/musicnews/triple-j-hottest-200-of-the-decade-countdown-dates-times/12020776

It's also confirmed that the top 100 will be live for everyone in Australia just like the regular Hottest 100.
WOW! I really like this format! And because it's in little sections, I'll be able to make time each day to tune in! So excited!!
Predictions for highest placed song from an annual countdown to miss the 200?
Will Rushing Back even feature, plenty of other Flume songs to steal the votes.
(haven't seen spoilers so I might be way off) I feel like there's a chance that Thrift Shop doesn't get in, but yeah, it's hard to imagine many 2019 tracks other than "bad guy" that feel like placing well. I wonder if this voting is too close to the last vote that no one instinctively wants to vote the same songs they just voted less than 2 months ago. Everyone will say 'oh, 2019 just wasn't a great year' but it'll grow on them once they decide 2020 is worse
I reckon all the #1's will get into the Top 200 somewhere. Even though "Thrift Shop" feels like a joke, I think it will get enough votes for that reason to get in.
How exciting! Although it'll be hard to follow the 200-101 during work hours. Can we expect the usual coverage on here?

I've got a feeling that 2010 will be the year that features the most.

Without any spoilers, it's been interesting seeing how Warm Tunas has been shaping up. I think it'll end up being one of their most inaccurate though.
I have been working overtime to write as many blurbs as I can (hopefully I'll have 100+ done tonight). Given the iterative nature I would like to have something written down on all 200 songs, though likely a lot of them will have to be edited in later.
I'm looking forward to this countdown will be interesting which song will be number 1. I'm looking forward to see where each song ends up and listen to songs that I have forgotten about.
FYI a few extra non-top 200 songs have been added to the voting list since the start, in addition to the 97 songs in the table thewitness posted. I retrieved the list and it appears to be just these 10, and they have 'created_at' fields that may be the time they were added (timezone unknown):

EDIT: 12/3/20

Sorry, I forgot a song that I thought I'd included. I've inserted that song at #14, bumped everything down. Nothing else changed.

Hey guys!

So... I f**ked up. Kinda. I'm certain that I saw somewhere on the triple j website that voting closed at midnight on Monday and well... yeah. No votes for me. Anyway, I'm gonna try to forgive myself for that one and just enjoy the music today.

Here's 10 songs which I might have voted for, because honestly I can't tell you if my decision-making was the same this morning as it would've been on Monday night.

Note: self-imposed limits of one song per artist and no write-ins.

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?
Billie Eilish - when the party's over
Children Collide - Jellylegs
Courtney Barnett - Depreston
DZ Deathrays - Shred For Summer
Flight Facilities (feat. Giselle) - Crave You
Foo Fighters - Rope
Last Dinosaurs - Zoom
The Smith Street Band - Birthdays
Violent Soho - Covered In Chrome

PS: I'm still planning to go ahead with my own top 100 of the decade at some point, but for the reasons mentioned above this isn't exactly an accurate preview of the top 10.
