Forum - Personal Charts: Your Special Occasion Charts - Irelander's Top 1000 Songs of the 2010s

The decade that was the 2010s was a time period where my consumption and collection of music completely changed. At the start of the decade, I was just weeks into starting my personal chart and it was fair to assume that it was far from a weekly ritual for me at that point. By the end of last year, not posting a chart each Monday seemed unthinkable.

As far as list making to this insane degree goes, I know that at times it can be a tricky pursuit where it feels that it's almost like splitting hairs sometimes. But while there were some very difficult decisions to be made across this almost-4-month-long process (seemingly much of it spent googling songs to find obscure information to resolve release date confusion), I can confirm that I have my favourite 1000 songs released last decade in the order in which I like them. There were 57 songs that made an EOY of mine last decade that were actually released in the '00s so there was some heartbreak. Of course I have had some release date issues with my 2009-2014 lists so I was fully aware that would happen.

For what it's worth, I won't be updating my 2010-2019 EOY lists as a result of the yearly rankings produced by this list. I made that mistake with my mid-decade in all honesty (my 2010-2014 EOY rankings are still the ranks that I determined as a result of the mid-decade) so I'd much rather keep the lists as a snapshot of what I loved at the end of each respective year. I took my EOY list making much more seriously in the second half of the decade anyway so I have even more reason to never update those ones.

There were songs that I loved way back when but have since fallen away, and conversely plenty of tunes that have shifted the opposite way and have become beloved despite a poor (or complete lack of a) chart run.

The top 1000 consists of:
- 782 out of the eligible 943 EOY entries, and 218 songs that never made an EOY
- 889 songs that made my chart, and 111 that never charted
- the personal chart peak that produced the most entries on this list was #1, with 168. 21 chart peaks did not produce a single entry, the highest of which being #44
- the least amount of songs per year was 2010 and 2015 with 84 each
- the most was 2012 with 123
- credited contributions from a total of 572 artists

Throughout the countdown I will be including the stats applicable to each song:
- EOD Rank: the yearly ranking specifically for this list only
- EOY Rank: the existing EOY rankings which again I will retain for EOY purposes after this list
- TI / PK / W1 = the times in, peak and weeks at #1 from my personal chart

I will be posting positions #1000 to #101 on the thread each week, and the top 100 will be broadcast on Thursday 6 August and Sunday 9 August (subject to change because life lol)

I genuinely can't wait to see everyone else's end of decade lists as well. I am surely not the only one when I say that this has been so exhausting but also incredibly enjoyable to revisit so many musical highlights. Enjoy

The list starts in the Midlands of England with Young Knives, whose more recent output has been a little inconsistent but made waves with "Human Again" back in 2011. It was surprising to land on "Don't Lean On Me" as my favourite Amity Affliction song but the hook just hits hardest all these years later. Similarly for The Vaccines, where I was convinced they would miss the top 1000 entirely despite "Nørgaard" and "Teenage Icon" both being songs that I listened to on repeat during my uni years; of course it makes total sense that non-charter "All In White" was my preference. I remember picking up the Sugar Army album in some pop-up store where they were selling heaps of random CDs for $2 each or something, "In Comes Light" has that moment to thank. I never cared much for "Goodnight Ellen" in the context of the second Love Junkies album at the time but in revisiting their discography, it stood out for me massively with the really dark and memorable riffs. Back when they were Cub Scouts I loved "Evie"! Trust also underwent a name change but I was pleased to sneak "Rescue, Mister" in. Cadence Weapon is a curious case, given that I think that "Hope In Dirt City" was an album that I listened to so much that it transcended critical analysis to some extent. DaBaby manages to land a respectable position after "Suge" very recently had a decent chart run earlier this year. The almighty Red Hot bloody Chili Peppers are in my list as I just could not resist Magaggie. Washington's debut album is full of highlights which is why it makes complete sense that I pick a song that was released a year after it. Mark Grondin will be very angry with my inclusion of Lil Tecca but what are you gunna do? Plenty of people like me who grew up with Foo Fighters were only too happy to ride the Royal Blood train. Money For Rope are a neat band who at times were a victim of poor production, but I can't confirm how many times this occurred. Methyl Ethel were 880 places too low, and I will conclude this post by saying baiya.

Around about the time that I started putting this list together, there was a song stuck in my head that I had thought I heard live with a really memorable folky hook in the chorus, because of what I thought I was hearing I went through my respective collections of Husky and Augie March; only to later find out that it wasn't a song I had heard live before because it was "Part Time Believer" by Boy & Bear. I only came across "Clean Slate" because the Urthboy album was featured on triple j, randomly I still remember the exact road I was on when it came up on the radio as I was driving to uni. Sliding down rather dramatically is Grinspoon with both "Passerby" and "Battleground", both are still tunes but I saw this coming. Sally Seltmann was unfortunately ineligible with "Harmony To My Heartbeat" so it is somewhat redeeming that I really enjoyed coming back to the follow-up single "Dream About Changing". I feel like I should love Death Grips when I'm really more of a casual observer, but "The Fever (Aye Aye)" brings back massive TF2 memories. Abbe May did a lot of different things last decade but my favourite remains the first song of hers I heard in "Design Desire". It is weird to me that I charted "Northcote (So Hungover)" in 2010 because my main memories of it (and the album) are randomly listening to bits of it while on the actual 86 tram on the way to uni, which wasn't for a couple years later. I wonder if I could have become a bigger Yuksek fan but "Always On The Run" was a very solid hit, interestingly many years later my old work used the instrumental as backing music for a social media video. And thanks to Zacco I am now aware that [s]they have[/s] he has new music. I knew the Missy Higgins version of "Shark Fin Blues" before the original from The Drones which did considerably better on my 2005 EOY (#36); even if I don't prefer it, the Missy cover still holds up well. I remember a friend was making fun of me at the footy for listening to my iPod and I'm pretty sure I was listening to "Song For Dan Treacy" by MGMT at the time. I saw The Charge live and bought their album, if memory serves me correctly I accidentally dropped the CD right in front of the lead singer immediately after buying it from him, and getting extremely apologetic afterwards. While I don't remember them playing "Skull Noir" the Pulled Apart By Horses gig was far less awkward, but it was a little disappointing that it wasn't well attended. "3005" by Childish Gambino was a H100 discovery which I know for a fact because it was one of 230240.6 songs that I charted after the countdown that year.

I listened to the self-titled Taking Back Sunday LP a heck of a lot in its time, while I still enjoy the riffs of "You Got Me" it was always going to slide down. The Model School are one of the most obscure artists to make this list and "It's Hard To Dance When Your Legs Are On Fire" would have been in contention too if it was not released in 2009. "Everyday" was a big return single for A$AP Rocky in 2015, I love how grand it still sounds even if it hasn't aged well. Two DNC H100-related discoveries finished back to back in "Ungirthed" by Purity Ring (indirectly through "Fineshrine") and "We Are" by Karnivool. I was certain that "XXX." would slide down but relatively for 2017 it actually got better for me. A nice little trio in Au Revoir Simone, Luluc and Your Friend being all female-sung indie pop by n1c artists. Interpol were always going to have a presence on this list but "All the Rage Back Home" really jumped up for me. All The Colours have a new album out produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor, a song was on my Spotify playlist this morning but it's no "Second To None" (there's a pun in there somewhere but I'm tired). I would type out the entire Death Grips song title but this paragraph is long as it is. "untitled 02 l 06.23.2014." is the one where he says "get God on the phone". "All Day" gets a mention just so I can say that a member of The Beatles makes an appearance in the list alongside a rapper who has collaborated with Flume. "Modern Art" is pretty brief but it packs the usual punch of a Black Lips song before they went all twangy and annoying. I wonder Jeromey Romey Romey Rome thinks about "Bound 2" landing a spot at #732. The Black Keys make their first contribution to this list... at #731 with Dan Auerbach's production on "West Coast" by Lana Del Rey. I wonder if that pig has stopped running to the tune of "Oblivion". "Blue Suede" is outrageous fun. Augie March are recognised for their abilities in landing at #723. "Endless Drain" by Major Leagues is one of my go-to random Aussie indie rock tunes to throw on whenever; possibly because of this status it has forced its way in. And The Black Keys actually made the list properly.

I really forgot how amazing "Get Up" by Young Fathers was but it only slightly moved up in 2014 ranks. I'm surprised that I didn't give "Normal Person" more credit at the time. BROCKHAMPTON had a few big hits on my chart but "BOY BYE" was unlucky to miss the EOY boat for me as it really grew on me since. Two Father John Misty songs finish back to back. Two albums that were very iconic early last decade for two very different reasons was "Watch The Throne" by Kanye West & Jay-Z and "Love At The Bottom Of The Sea" by The Magnetic Fields. Muse managed to finish higher than Rich The Kid. My favourite song by Angus and/or Julia is of course the n1c "Broken Brights". On a per year basis they are still behind King Gizz, but Oh Sees have a scary discography only matched by their insistence on changing their name every few years. One of my prevailing memories of "Paradise" by Coldplay is actually that it was played in the background of West Ham's Championship Playoff win against Blackpool, which was of course when my love for Ricardo Vaz Tê peaked. "Red Eyes". "Bangarang". DJ Shadow was lucky to sneak into my recent EOY but "Kings & Queens" grew on me more since so understandably it has jumped up a bit. At the Drive-In weren't so lucky with "Incurably Innocent" but it still packs a punch. The correct way of crediting "Warrior" was as Converse had initially intended. "Brick By Brick" has a second life as the theme song for a podcast I listen to on occasion, but luckily it hasn't ruined it for me. "Bill's Mandolin" did better than "BOY BYE" and "Kings & Queens" in the end! "Keep Away You Feral Son Of A Bitch" is not the aggressive song that the title suggests but it is one of the catchiest songs in this [s]bitch[/s] batch. If you've heard a more bizarrely abrupt ending to a song than "Black Sand" by Dune via Spender, it probably means you've heard the new Josh Pyke single. Late last year I overheard a primary school student singing the hook to "CHopstix" which led to my brain doing all sorts of backflips. Arguably the loudest Snakadaktal song is "Dance Bear" and it's a shame that there isn't anything recently noteworthy to report about what the band members are currently doing. Who knows if I will ever update my very dodgy version of "The Saddest Thing I Know" but it remains one of BOT's most rocking slaps. "Starboy" is less of a slap than this website gives it credit for. Autolux briefly spent time at #1 on my chart with the EOY ineligible "Change My Head".

Spender? I hardly know 'er! I regret to inform you that the bed and chair are racist. Okay now I am out of memes. I swear it was partly the Isol-Aid performance that pushed this but wow I love "The Opposite Of Us". alt-J get their binary solo on without licking anyone's batteries on "In Cold Blood". "The Wilhelm Scream" may or may not have been the first James Blake song I ever heard but it was definitely the first one I was captivated by; it's hilarious how it sounds like nothing else I was charting at the time. "Vertigo" by Mini Mansions and Alex Turner was a collaboration that further proved that sometimes your favourite bands can be mates. If you want to hear Ecca Vandal screaming her absolute small intestines out, try "Broke Days, Party Nights". Musically "Finishing Jubilee Street" sounds nothing like "Jubilee Street". Remember when "Miami 2 Ibiza" was a massive hit on my chart? Yep. Howler's "Back Of Your Neck" is maybe the most iconic early-2010s song for me for two reasons, on the basis that it's landfill indie and also that I put it in the wrong year for my EOY. Snakadaktal and Lunatics on Pogosticks were both Unearthed High winners and finish back to back, despite sounding nothing alike one another. RIP Jordan Groggs Sadly only "Jackson's Last Stand" gets in for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool due to year eligibility. I vividly remember "Things Change" as a big hit on my chart when I was living interstate. My brother and I listened to the self-titled Pete International Airport album as a joke only to find out that "Starlight" is excellent. For fans of having slob on one's knob, I present #526. You could have told me at the time that Nick Hill was the guy from Death Grips but I'm still not quite sure who he is. The lead singer of Slow Club ended up featuring on the worst Django Django album, so there's a comforting degree of separation. "No Comprende" iirc was a song I listened to once when I was running late for a train, which sucks because the acoustics at Southern Cross station are utterly terrible and I would probably have had the volume up very loud.

If triple j throw shade at The Soft Pack again, I will threaten an even more irrational war on it than the "Shake It Off" saga. Meanwhile, I highly doubt that any band that collaborates with the late great Les Murray would receive any shade, even if Les chose to reference Mark Bosnich over Mark Schwarzer. If you pretend that I've considered the Cedric Gervais remix of "Summertime Sadness" as part of this list, you would be wrong but at least you're having dance remixy fun whilst doing so. The Jezabels have a certain tier of epic songs that are hard to separate in quality but "The End" is certainly a track I regret not charting. I loved the crap out of the Sunflower Bean album at the time and it's all still very consistent, except for "Wall Watcher" which is easily their best song. Honestly I was rather disappointed by The National's album last year but "Light Years" stops me in my tracks every time. Apparently, Kevin Abstract was trying to emulate M.I.A. on the chorus of "GUMMY" so it makes me wonder if it would sound all that different if she was actually featured on it. I'm quite sure the first time I heard "The River" by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard was live and I'm aware it's a setlist staple of theirs, which is why it's strange that they didn't play it the 2nd & 3rd times I saw them. There was a brief moment where "What You Know" by Two Door Cinema Club actually got a bit of radio airplay and it almost crossed over iirc?? Spoiler alert: Ganz makes this list but Wanz does not. "Down for the Outing" was a belated #1 on my chart but flopped in the EOY which I at least put down partly to its very late run. What Twitter doesn't want you to know is that you may ban our villages, but you may never take our "Villages"!! The single version of "Nu Africa" probably fits onto playlists easier but the lengthy album version with the verse of poetry from Ernestine Johnson is always a great listen. I actually thought "Baby Don't You Lie To Me!" would be a lot higher up the list than "Seven Nights Seven Days" but in any case it's still my preferred Fratellis comeback single of the decade. A collaboration incorporating Yacht Club DJs and Hunting Grounds shouldn't sound as good as "Water Bombs". "Night Time" and "Charity" were also back to back in my 2018 list but their order has been swapped around this time. I was introduced to Protomartyr through the haunting and loud "Why Does It Shake?", written about Joe Casey's father's passing and his mother's suffering from Alzheimer's. I may or may not have time to listen to their new album by the time you're reading this. "Closer" is one of the lower key moments on the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs album which if you know me well, you'll know I absolutely love. "Hell Boy" was one of the most enjoyable #100 H100 discoveries I've ever had. "The Rover" is genuinely a heavyweight in the Interpol catalogue and I won't have anyone argue otherwise. I've never watched any Twilight movies but I randomly have one of the soundtracks with "With You In My Head" becoming a big mid-decade discovery. A tweeted link by Anthony Fantano to SavageRealm & Le$Laflame's "Feeling Great" created one of the more random #1s on my chart to date. The existence of "Ultrasound" certainly made up somewhat for the breakup of Cymbals Eat Guitars.

Turns out Ed Sheeran almost made this list again but instead I picked a different black midi song. M. Ward's "More Rain" album was a delightful surprise back in 2016 and "Pirate Dial" was my first taste of it. It contended that year with The Kills who finish slightly higher with "Siberian Nights". "Avalon" doesn't sound like anything else I've heard from last decade, let alone from Foxygen. I wonder if the bass player from The Belligerents is more excited about finishing in the top 400 of this list or producing one of the biggest hit songs ever. As far as The Voidz are concerned, I went from vague disinterest to wild fandom as soon as "All Wordz Are Made Up" dropped. "Raven" is probably not my most memorable #1 but it captured a period of time when local bands like Redcoats getting far more scrobbles than American rappers was commonplace. While we're on that topic, Daveed Diggs and Kendrick Lamar are two of those notable rappers with the latter getting two features landing on the list consecutively. "Nuclear Fusion" was an unlucky 2016 release when it came to EOYs. "The Big What If" turned out to be a very apt song title as the Pulled Apart By Horses album that followed ended up being a massive flop. I maybe should have excluded "Cough Cough" from this list for being insensitive to the people of 2020. Simone & Girlfunkle aren't just a funny band name it turns out. I was wondering if I should have credited RZA & Lil Jon for their cameos in the "Giving Up The Gun" film clips. "Faceshopping" was a fun discovery in my 2018 EOY work but my preferred face-related song is "Faces". Juicy J must be wondering how many times he needs to be up late night ballin' for him to get the credit he deserves.

Hope everyone is staying safe especially in my neck of the woods. Please look after one another

As I successfully predicted, (even despite the weird world we're living in) life has gotten in the way so I've had to shift the dates of my broadcast again. This Thursday 6 August I will broadcast #100-#51 with brief snippets of #200-#101 also to be played. And then on Sunday 9 August I will do the top 50, and along the way I plan to post my top 100 albums of the decade as well. Both broadcasts will have a 7:30pm start, links for everything will be on be this thread.

We are getting closer...

It seems absurd that there was a time that I didn't know what a Courtney Barnett or a Flume was. "Pumped Up Kicks" is probably going to be a song on many people's lists, at least I hope. Very young me from a decade ago found it funny that a band could be named !!! but then was quite shocked to find how great "Jamie, My Intentions Are Bass" is. "Going Bad" was notably one of only a couple ineligible songs for my 2019 EOY so it gets some redemption. "Patricia's Thirst" was a discovery via jinx's chart that I ended up loving way more than him. "Bored In the USA" was a distinct moment where my fandom for Tillman went to another level. It's easy to forget that Danny Brown and Ghostface Killah actually collaborated on a track, and that it was amazing. "Hoops" did not finish in #260. "212" did not finish in #212. "On the Regular" really surprised me with how well it has aged. As far as alt-J album tracks go, "Dissolve Me" was certainly one that at the time I slept on. The other day I got really worried that my placing for "Inside Out" was too low but really but I've just been listening to a lot of clipping. in recent weeks. My most vivid memory of the Gang of Youths album was listening to it on a London bus during our time in Europe. I disproportionately lost my absolute shit when The Novocaines found out about their placing on what I think was the ACW. "A Little God In My Hands" was my introduction to the work of Michael Gira, which really hasn't expanded too far since because lbr I have no patience. I shouldn't forget how much I loved that Those Dancing Days album. Oh damn how I wanted "Rise" to make the top 200, but of course you'll find out why soon.
I've been reading along without commenting but I wanted to properly acknowledge the list so far before you unveil the rest! I really like this rollout and I love having the extensive chart/previous EOY position info/commentary beside each entry *.* Of course, there's so much to mention so I've... basically just written a wall of song titles Here goes... Young Blood, Evie, Final Form, Anywhere <3 (amazing that it was a top 10 hit for you!), Meditation, Rescue, Mister, Boys Will Be Boys, Get Down, Gemini! (nice after not making it in 2015), Run the Road (had to double check if this was in my 2018 EOY - it wasn't and probably should have been :p), Clair De Lune, Luna, Rock It, Ransom, Twilight Driving, Stressed Out, Doin' Time, REALiTi <3 (wish I was wise enough to have had this anywhere near my 2015 EOY at the time), Rosebud, The Others! (one of my favourite songs of theirs), On Top, 3005, Lose Control, Hold Up, Automaton, Everyday (aww at it not aging well, I still love it ), Moaning Lisa Smile (omg its new position in 2014 being higher than its original peak *.*), Daydreaming, Hurricane, Zulu Screams, Satan, Tricks, Black Beatles, Lose It (one of my favourite Flume songs! Nice at it making your 2016 EOY without a particularly long time spent on your chart too), Evil Spider, All Day, Bound 2, West Coast, Rising Water, Oblivion (THE PIG RUNNING VIDEO), Pedestrian at Best, Smoke Signals, Fuckin 'n' Rollin, Lux Prima, NLMG, Going Home, Baby Blu, BTD, HyperParadise remix, Flesh Without Blood <3, BOY BYE, Never Be, Alien, Youth, Formation (!! nice after not being in your original 2016 EOY), Red Eyes, Bangarang, TMWS, (wow Only One here as well as All Day), Radio!, Daddi, When It Rain, Starboy, Depreston, Raiders, The Opposite of Us, Y&M Remix, Miami 2 Ibiza, Bad Girls <3, KARATE, Afterlife, Jump Into the Fog, Don't Hold Your Breath (omg at it being a top 10 hit for you in 2011!), Midnight City <3, Shine, Blue Jeans, Know This, (ooh I forgot Slow Club was the band Self Esteem is/was in, I like the Django song she featured on but don't remember any of the other songs on that album ), Not Running, Andromeda <3, Begin Again, Youth...

...and so much more in the top 500 so far! bury a friend (didn't realise this had a relatively low peak for you), Backseat Freestyle, Summertime Sadness, Same Same (wow at the TI for this, amazing longevity!), Pretty Pimpin, GUMMY, Bags (I'm sure this will have been mentioned but VW/Clairo back to back *.*), A Shot, What You Know, Lone, (Villages *.*), Everything Now, Old Man, Happiness Is a Butterfly, bad guy, Accelerate <3, Edge of Town, Magic Fountain, TBTB, RICKY, Night Time, Charity/Need a Little Time, Drown, I for an Eye, Endless Summer, It's Just Us Now (forgot this charted so high for you in 2016!), Your Best American Girl, Tourists, Alright, Apocalypse Dreams, Nobody (omg at it ending up top 50 on your 2018 EOY after such a short chart history!), Passionfruit, Superior Emotion, Comeback Kid (why do I feel like this actually could be a dark horse for combined), Beware of the Dogs, HO,WGH, Lazuli, BLACK BALLOONS, Mariners Apartment Complex, Mask Off, I Feel It Coming, (wow at Kacy Hill featuring on a Travis song - I always forget she was first signed to G.O.O.D. lol), YAH., Faceshopping, Faces, Black Skinhead, Big Fish, Seasons, Retrograde, Little Dark Age, You Want It Darker (surprised you never charted this), Suspirium, First Light, Hyper Dark, King Kunta, 212 <3, On the Regular, Get Some, Nameless, Faceless, Inside Out, WCIDITFGO?, You're a Fucking Joke, Ultralight Beam, Thank You & Down on My Luck! Looking forward to Thursday night + Sunday!
In around 20 minutes this is getting underway.

What a decade. I'm proud to say I spent all of it on this forum. My early EOY lists and charts were an absolute mess with release dates, it must be said. As such there were 57 songs that made an EOY that was actually released in the '00s (most of which were 2010 EOY songs released in 2009, but there were some embarrassing discoveries many of them I was already well aware of though). I was shocked to learn just how old "Thuggin'" was but hey I'm glad I could still include it here. I end up right where I started with clipping., and "Work Work" still sounds so ahead of its time. I could not have imagined just how much Purity Ring's "Fineshrine" would grow on me when I first heard it in the H100. "Siberian Breaks" beats out "Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst" by 6 seconds as the longest song in the 1000. Big Sean was a rapper I didn't pay attention to for a while but "Bounce Back" was further proof of how ignorant that was in hindsight. Also just to keep on the topic of 1000, "1000". I was crazy about that Obits album at the time sure, but "Operation Bikini" is still such an exciting listen. "The Shade" being easily my favourite Metric song might be one of my strangest hot takes. If I was broadcasting this bit in full, two ScHoolboy Q songs in a row is the sort of party I'd sign up for. Back on the topic of albums I stanned the shit out of, I revisited my entire collection of The Love Junkies for this list and found that their two albums were a lot closer in quality than I had originally wanted to admit. Luckily Aloe Blacc no longer needs a dollar. The Ocean Party once confirmed to me via email that the iTunes spelling of their song "Charters Towers" was incorrect. "Plasticine Mezzanine" still makes me so so happy whenever I hear it. Speaking of emotions, "Norf Norf" does not make me cry. Ohhhh there were so many tracks in this section I wanted to push up into the 100. 2017 was such a stacked year and "FEAR." has grown on me even more since. "Bad and Boujee" is an iconic song to define my tastes gravitating more towards hip hop in the latter end of the decade. Teleman was such an unlikely hero of my 2016 EOY. "Some Minds" is a flawless production with such a bridge so dramatic it gives me ths shivers. "Warning", this top 100 is some kind of handful.

I think because it was the obvious hit I gave "Strong" disproportionate attention, but really this is the one that has the most impact. From the moment the first verse comes in it's a winner. I am complementing the vocals of Hannah Reid here too, whose name I forgot which I partly blame Harley Streten for.

Well so far the top 100 is turning out to be songs I didn't realised I loved so much. I'm not proud of many of my early reviews as many of you may know, I've deleted so many of them I probably breakeven to some extent. Given how much I love it now I still find my initial opinions of this song (and to a lesser extent the album) so perplexing. And I am fully here for the album version because I must say the radio edit for the music video isn't nearly as satisfying.

Our Hearts2012#18#201

Given there is a completely unrelated band that ended up on her Spotify page, it appears that I have heard pretty much everything there is to hear from Leah Siegel's Firehorse project although she was definitely active before this album. This song may have been a surprise personal chart #1 instead of "Our Hearts" at the time but looking back I am still rather captivated by this. The production helps it along well in fairness but the layering and effects of the different guitars really tie the whole thing together.

I may have gone overboard with the fun that I had with this record but here we are all these years later, I am still head over heels for the lead single. The wonky synths match the odd vocal style employed by Claudia Gonson, the whole thing is just so odd and I love it.

This was very much a case of "oh I'll just remember to check their next album out" and then I did and I liked it a lot, but then kept coming back to this track far more. It just gets in and gets the job done and gets out, 2-minute-and-change out of control indie rock bangers were my jam at this time and probably always will be.

Bowie's final artistic statement was one that many people found new meaning onto when he passed away soon after, I for one must admit that I don't think I gave any of it a go until his death. Even out of context this is such a monstrous track, and I love it when the second section commences. An unfortunate late release that missed out on my 2016 EOY, as it was when I was starting to a bit more strict with my EOY lists.

Though I've enjoyed what I know of their work, I was never a massive fan of The Walkmen and certainly not to the extent of my love (albeit a little faded now) for Vampire Weekend. Of course, Rostam Batmanglij's solo and production efforts extend way beyond the realm of just VW and especially since the release of this record back in 2016.

TEEDs are not a band as you may already know by now, but with some low Hottest 100 placings in the decade I can at least confirm that I wasn't the only one loving the work of Orlando Higginbottom. Although even now we still haven't heard a second album from him, the songs we've heard since just simply haven't matched tracks like "Tapes & Money". I listened to this album repeatedly and it has never been an album with one absolute clear standout, but the chorus here just provides more euphoria than almost any other electronic track did in the entire decade. Proof that songs with the lyric "feet don't fail me now" are always classics as long as they are not by Queens Of The Stone Age.

This was a decent charter even at the time and it was never one I grew tired of, but realising just how high I wanted it on this list was quite the surprise. It has way more of a kick than "Pumped Up Kicks" funnily enough, and perhaps where initially the length might have been a slight issue for me at the time, it certainly isn't anymore. The chorus is such a huge payoff and it's the best hook they've been apart of.

I admit my lateness on "THat Part" but that was nothing compared to "JoHn Muir" which was a discovery last year, even after his actual 2019 material was doing well on my chart. I was drawn to the brilliantly shot video but it's the classic production and incredible flow that got me into this. Such a tremendous one-hit wonder only to mention that JANEVA ended up getting that second chart hit for me earlier this year. The tight production is outstanding on this as are the vocals, but the lyrics also pushed this along for me too. What can be said about this album that hasn't been said already? When someone asks me to put on some hip hop, it's almost a guarantee that at some point anything from "good kid, m.A.A.d city" gets a mention. This particular track is also one that gets a run more often than not, not only for the iconic chorus but also for Jay Rock's excellent verse. If only I actually knew how good this all was at the time.

...instead in 2012 I was playing the same song 40 or 50 times in the one night or something ridiculous like that, yes I was a young fanboy of Deep Sea Arcade. I was over the moon when I was eventually able to see them live supporting Temples too, which of course is the match made in heaven between mid-'10s me and early-'10s me. Of course DSA fell to the latter, with this being a single leading to the release of their debut album.

If there's a 2017 song that I simply could not have possibly understood had it been released 7 or 8 years earlier, it was surely this. "RELAXER" is utterly chilling from front to back and I always love coming back to it, and surprisingly this being the longest song on the album turned out to be one of my favourites. Marika Hackman's vocals towards the end of the track certainly play a part as do the lovely instrumental parts at this section (I think it's the yangqin).

Nothing says early 2010s internet culture like images of Dell laptops in the ocean, such was the ubiquity and popularity of this song that it was widely accepted by pretty much everyone as great. Myself included, as its chart run would indicate; and while not everything she's released has been to everyone's taste, there's no doubting that I was one of many that jumped on board the moment this hit the charts.

2019 was such a strong year that this track felt a little unlucky to land where it did in my EOY, but then again I gave the album a lot of love and still do. By now it's not as much of a shock but certainly this did wonders for me well after its chart run. BMTH have never quite hit these heights since and I doubt ever will, I mean once you sing about a sandpit turtle surely you have seen the end (of the peak of one's career)?

It seems like Beach Baby are still going which is great because they are a band, but it was this track right at the end of 2015 which became a very big deal for me. With riffs perhaps somewhat playing into my love for The Soft Pack's "Strapped" but instead with a distinctly British flavour.

The timeline of me enjoying this band is quite strange, as I was late to jump on board this track. Having heard a significant amount of their work this really does stand out as a direction they didn't really explore much after this album sadly.

EOD RankRel-YearEOY RankTIPKW1
#8 of 20162016#4 of 20162714

2016 is a pretty stacked year but this is easily the best Angel Olsen song still when I look back. Possibly avoided the wrath of Reece Mastin's lawyers too by removing the ampersand which I felt was a very clever move. It's a song that doesn't mess about, with a bridge so good at the end it almost sounds triumphant in its catchiness.

This walked so "SICKO MODE" could wrong? Okay that may be a stretch but I was a little surprised with just how much staying power this has had since 2017. Return singles can be a little bit overhyped if the end product of the album doesn't turn out as well, but in this case "DAMN." turned out so good that much the opposite had occurred. Still, this received its fair share of plays and will always stand out as a huge moment in Kendrick's incredible discography.

I do occasionally see this come up in conversation as a '10s indie favourite and it's also a setlist staple for the Londoners, despite the fact of course that it was never a single. Of course I picked up my love for it solely from being an album cut from the very diverse "My Love Is Cool".

68. Caribou - Odessa

EOD RankRel-YearEOY RankTIPKW1
#6 of 20102010DNC1112

Although I was considering it briefly, I never ended up tracking the exact release dates for every song in the 1000 because the payoff just wasn't there. With that said, this would surely be one of the oldest songs to feature here, being released in the very first month of the decade. I was a big FIFA 11 player and the iconic soundtrack also featured the likes of Yeasayer, MGMT and the wrong Jump Jump Dance Dance song. Maybe I went slightly overboard in voting for this in the H100 of the decade but there is no denying just how solid Snaith's production here is. It's apparently him on vocal duties too even if it isn't as blatantly obvious as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs songs.

It took me several listens for this to click with me as it was just simply an album track, and I was a little perplexed that critics weren't jumping completely on board this one over others like I ended up doing. Not sure what I've said previously but I still find it hard to decide what rap verse is better out of Gibbs', Yasiin's and Black Thought's (RIP Malik B) but Gibbs probably stands out more because of the timing and the way that he comes through with so much energy. Madlib's production as always as stunning, I have said that this doesn't even sound like a banger when played directly after loud modern hip hop tunes.

Their foray into microtonal tuning and use of the zurna proved very fruitful on the first of 5 albums they ended up releasing in 2017. While "Rattlesnake" and "Nuclear Fusion" could potentially have been morphed into something that could appear on "Nonagon Infinity", this was a greater step towards their intended purpose on this album. It was around the time this song was released that I became a huge King Gizzard fan and I've spoken about it a lot. For a band I've seen live 3 times already I can't wait to do it again.

From the simple piano line and clapping rhythm that kicks the song off, the fourth track on Boy's "Mutual Friends" is one I've always loved for its simplicity. The chorus is so catchy and it's easy to see why this is essentially their biggest hit across a number of countries (but not Germany...)

I can't imagine a world where Richard Dawson is from any country other than the UK, as the lyrics will clearly indicate not only here but on much of the album. Of course we are listening to a cut from "2020" in 2020 and the content somehow seems even more relevant in light of recent events. The guitar riffs and drumming on this track are also top notch too but he is such a delightful vocalist.

I was already massively into this before it appeared on the FIFA 12 soundtrack, although I was myself months late on it due to it being a late 2010 release. The original album version is so inferior I must add, not just with vocals but on production too. Understandably it was also very popular on the H100 front too, somehow finishing higher than the essential and immovable "You Got the Dirtee Love".

After being a huge fan of their dream pop side on "Pretty Girls", the eclectic Little Dragon went for a more upbeat approach with "Sweet". I'd even say the confectionery-related lyrics don't bother me like they would because they are able to capture exactly what a sugar hit sounds like.

"Safe And Also No Fear" was an album that grew on me not long after this became quite a decent chart hit, and in fact by the time 2019 was over it was very easy to justify its high placing in my albums list. The riff work on "Good Ones" is simple but just so memorable, with the lyrics so much more impactful and deep than the truly useless annotations currently on its Genius page.

I've already told the story of when this dropped on triple j and it was a time when work was really on the up for me, and after becoming such an Avalanches stan in the couple of years leading up to "Wildflower" dropping it was such a rush. I've almost had the perfect journey with them because I didn't have to wait 16 years like all the real (read: Gen X) fans. Interestingly I wasn't even that familiar with MF DOOM at the time (I knew of him I'm almost 100% sure, but this was very much before that particular journey started).

In perhaps a slightly different way to "LUST." this was another dark hip hop track from the latter part of the decade. Originally I believe the "BUSY" part was its own song. Vocals from Saba and theMIND are just great all over this track (Daoud is uncredited presumably because his part is very minor even if he is also on co-production). And that brings up another thing to mention: the production is absolutely sensational all over this track.

From the moment I got my hands on this album, Django Django dominated 2015. In fact when I saw them support Foals, I was one of very few people in the crowd that was more so there for the support act. While this deep cut is a special favourite of mine, much of the same quirky indietronica is sprinkled all across "Born Under Saturn" which really remains to be (one of) their opus(es).

GoldLink snatched a top 10 EOY smash with "Same Clothes As Yesterday", from an album which isn't completely consistent but also had many bright moments. Ciscero kicks the track off with GoldLink not coming in until the second verse, which isn't completely off brand for a modern hip hop song, but nevertheless was surprising for me to learn at the time.

ETID's style may not be everyone's cup of tea, but oh boy this album was a great discovery in 2014. I spent a surprising amount of time on the deep cuts too but it was the breakout hit (so to speak) that was never going to be overtaken. Brutal, terrifying and just so thrilling.

Maybe soon I will end up getting to hearing Slowdive's earlier work that made them a well-known name in the first place. However it was their self-titled album in 2017 that had a few great tracks, and one unstoppable one. Not a hot Norah Jones cover, the guitar riff sets the melody in really well and the chorus is one of the dreamiest things I've ever heard.

Understandably this was quite a big deal back in 2015, and it progressed Kevin Parker's transition over from primarily psychedelic rock to full-blown synth pop. One of the longest songs in the 100 and I think it also remains Tamey's longest song to date, beloved by fans even for its noticeable lack of Trevor beef.

Kendrick's return with this track was interesting in a number of ways; first of which was my own anticipation after becoming a belated fan through "good kid, m.A.A.d city". And then there's the fact that this doesn't sound much like anything Kendrick had/has done, and it certainly wouldn't fit on GKMC. I've repeatedly said how I don't enjoy the album version anywhere near as much or much at all frankly, even if the context of the album is important. An anthem of positivity and one that I adore so much.

Technically this album never actually starts because it can be listened to on an infinite loop and therefore it never ends in the first place. In fact the truth is I always have the repeat function switched off when I listen to music on iTunes or wherever, and it's plausible that King Gizzard may have had something to do with that. I found it really hard to insert the album's tracks into my 2016 EOY because the experience was all so new and overwhelming to me, not to mention the fact that so many riffs come in and out throughout the whole LP. But the opening track really sets the tone for the start of one great party, well... Technically this album never actually starts because it can be liste-

The bass riff to end all bass riffs from Olugbenga Adelekan makes this one of the best Metronomy songs, and the harmonies in the chorus are just breathtaking. One could argue that Wolf Alice left their loud guitars behind in 2015. Don't let the single artwork and song title fool you: this is Wolf Alice at their loudest and most abrasive. Pharrell's production is so excellent on "Culture II"'s shortest track, and yes I do admit it's an album that overstays its welcome a bit. The tables above this blurb listing Gibbs' and Madlib's respective entries in my EOY lists pretty much all originate from discovering this track. It's possible I may have come across "Madvillainy" but I may not have appreciated Madlib's unique productions if not for loving this album and song first. No features required here, just Gibbs spitting absolute fire until you hear some guy discussing about how he will continue to drag his foot out your motherf**king ass.

I definitely didn't know what a Lana Del Rey was when I came across this at first but I found out pretty quickly. Of course for the sake of this list, she is lucky the Black Out Band song came out in the '00s, but this still stands out as one of the decade's most beautiful pop songs.

If there's a more frustrating delay for a song's actual release last decade, I haven't heard it. Hilariously I had to bookmark the European radio station link on my phone from which this could be streamed and had to wait quite a while for the actual song to properly come out, as there was nowhere else other than that link where the song existed. When it came to ordering the physical album, I think the website was all in German (I was also concerned the overseas delivery would take ages) so I had to email the record label to definitely make sure the address was correct and in part of their response they said "you'll be pretty much the first person in Down Under to listen to that wonderful album". I can safely say this statement was probably accurate unless someone somehow beat me to the punch, and what a great title track this is.

This song is higher than "Villages", and "Times We Haven't Had" didn't make the 1000. Make of that what you will. Peter Silberman has one of the most amazing voices going round and the lush instrumentation in "Palace" plays right into his abilities. In addition to "Hotel" his solo track was always locked in to land in the 1000 too.

One of the most iconically and horrifically short chart runs in my chart's history, "The Look" is one of the most enduring chart hits from a time when my chart was still waiting to mature and settle down [s]by kimbra[/s]. Okay so Fantano may be onto something in that NAV isn't particularly groundbreaking as an artist. The Canadian perhaps won't be well known for tracks such as "Price on My Head", "Snap", "We Doin' This" or "Let's Go", and not just because I made the latter two song titles up. However there are individual tracks in his discography that hit compelling and moody vibes that other rappers just couldn't replicate with the same quality. It helps that Metro Boomin's production is so great too (wait he hasn't produced anything this year yet???).

"Strapped" is an album that I was obsessed with for several years and if you know me well, you'll know that I occasionally obsess with the thought that they may never release anything as a band again hopefully they do. "Captain Ace" ties together so much of the fun instrumentation all across the album and includes a hugely indulgent instrumental section that takes up more than two-thirds of the whole track. Proof that indulgence is sometimes excellent.

Given that he wanted to have the song for himself, Bowie could have had two entries in the 100, but instead Arcade Fire do. For a song of this length to finish well into the top quarter of a Hottest 100 is ridiculous to me, especially considering in hindsight the strength of that year except for the fact that "Get Lucky" didn't win.

The layers to what makes this track so great are just as noteworthy as my journey with Kendrick's music last decade. And yet, this song pretty much speaks for itself, although I was late to hearing it and it remains one of my most significant Hottest 100 discoveries ever. It sums up his outsider status which is explored so much on "good kid, m.A.A.d city" and to an extent it something I related to at that stage too. It doesn't look like this song will be forgotten any time soon and I sure hope to keep it that way.

I wanted "Volcano" to be the second coming of "Sun Structures", as I am sure many Temples stans did, but of course this was perhaps the only indication of that level of supreme quality. Longevity is something that I have rewarded when compiling this list, and while this was always the best Father John Misty song, I wasn't sure until quite late in the process just how high this would end up here. The drums are huge, the riff is amazing, and Tillman's vocal performance is unstoppable. Perhaps my only complaint with the studio recording is that I really wished it went longer, so luckily the live versions are often more lavish and epic affairs. The FJM live set I caught at The Forum remains one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Meanwhile, TIL Hollywood Forever Cemetery is an actual cemetery.

One of the more interesting shifts in sound last decade was when Jonathan Boulet went from indie rock/pop at the same loudness level as The Jungle Giants to noisy garage punk that made DZ Deathrays sound like a pair (well, trio) of librarians. In a way it was almost the answer to the question "how can "Black Sheep Blues' be made even more fun and raucous?" Not to be confused with the band called Creeper that I never really liked much.

I am pretty sure I knew "The Age of the Understatement" enough before this dropped, but all I really had to go off at the time was "Bad Habits" being fine but really nothing mind-blowing. Miles Kane, Alex Turner and co. then saw to that, because this swooped in and easily collected my #1 spot in the EOY. Of course you might be wondering what happened since then...

When I did a very rough time period they only came up 15th lol https://imgur.com/a/0hUXcRG However, Juggers took a while to follow up this single which made it stand out even more on the album. I can safely say confirm/reconfirm that it's definitely their best song.

I hope everyone has the patience to wait for my 1966 EOY to see where "Try a Little Tenderness" lands, but for now here's "Otis". A song with Kanye's trademark quirky production, with both rappers bringing their A game in styles that were compared to their respective earlier works. Another classic music video too, after which I'm still wondering how Jay-Zed still has all of his fingers.

Let's get real for one moment, "Infest The Rats' Nest" ended up happening. Let's get back to the countdown, "Planet B" satisfied the itch around 16 months ago that I had for this type of King Gizzard song. All the craziness of "Nonagon Infinity" but with the heavy riffs turned up slightly more, so much so that they more closely resemble heavy metal than the actual album they won a heavy metal/hard rock ARIA album for.

The song about stabbing one's Facebook quickly left my chart without a whimper after a few weeks, and just like that I had almost given up on MGMT. But then a week later it re-entered straight into my top 10 and the rest is history. "Flash Delirium" is another FIFA song that I actually knew beforehand, just for those keeping count. My memories of this song were from a time when I was so bloody young so it's just so strange to be sitting here over ten years later writing this blurb.

Just like with "Girls" and "Lay It Down", in this house we stan superior pre-album versions of songs. In this case though I really cannot understand how there are probably people out there that prefer to listen to the "AM" version. I shall not rant about this any more; this is such an amazing rocker that was blocked in 2012 by an ineligible track and it has been blocked again anyway!

With a sample of YB's "Lambo" and Super Beagle's "Dust a Soundboy", each of the 4 rappers provide arguably the best verses all of them have ever done (emphasis on arguably as I dunno for sure lol). Kanye's production is immense as is the music video, and this may well be one of my favourite rap songs ever.

I had a shit time of things in 2017. It's easy to put things in perspective in hindsight which I can absolutely do now in light of events since that point, but there's not really much worse than living in the moment of things feeling really good and seeing them very quickly falling apart. "RELAXER" soundtracked both my struggle through this and the eventual success I had later in the year to find something completely new. I still feel now that I was always going to be brought down to earth at some point so it was a learning experience that I truly needed sooner rather than later. But of course I found happiness, and all the while I was always loving this song. Not long after that success I had found for myself, of course I went on holiday to Europe, where the best I could do was to be a tourist near Verona - so that makes me a complete flop. With all of that jibber jabber aside, "3WW" was a song that, although it only had the 1 week at #1, had amazing longevity; and even if it were to miss out on the EOY top spot, I still feel it would have been retired with 75 weeks.

I like to get up on my old soapbox sometimes and whinge about album versions of songs being lacklustre... well FIDLAR definitely have the opposite. The first version of this found on their "Shit We Recorded In Our Bedroom" EP is downloadable for free for a reason. However I just love how triumphant this song is in the face of growing up, it always puts a smile on my face, and the bridge leading into the final chorus is a wholesome and glorious moment indeed.

I had 13 new entries to my chart on 5 December 2011, which if you check out my chart stats was quite rare/high at that time. Right at the very bottom of the list of debuts for that particular week (debuting at #97 in fact) you will find "Waitress", a song that I had only scrobbled for the first time that day when doing the chart so presumably I had only heard it a handful of times from the YouTube video from which I found it. As we approach closer to nine years from that moment, the song from Swiss-German duo Boy (or BOY as some but seemingly not all sources of internet information prefer; perhaps enough to one day decide to arbitrarily adjust how I should stylise them in my many databases, but hey one thing at a time; why am I so blasé about some of these instances but so pedantic about others? I dunno; this is a very long piece of information to have in these parentheses) has daylight between it at #2 as the most played song on my last.fm. Quite frankly I don't see it ever being beaten so long as last.fm still remains a functioning website. This song is so simple and elegant, it invites you in so politely with its warm and comforting melodies. The instrumentation is so complementary to Valeska's lovely vocals, and the lyrics tell the tale of the mundane nature of the hospitality industry. I wouldn't know this from personal experience, as I can assure you that having had very few takeaway coffees in the past four months, if I were to start a café tomorrow I would almost certainly go broke. It has always seemed very strange to me that I'm certain that I knew "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses before I knew this particular Waitress Boy thing, despite never recalling the song / artist title until the amazing [s]aus-charts[/s] hitparade database compelled me to do so (holy crap "I Know What Boys Like" is goddamn awful). Why am I still typing things someone please stop me ~

I'm not discouraged by this dropping to #2 since my mid-decade list, as it hasn't really dropped in quality and after all this time it still slays so much.

Quite rightly the following conundrum can be brought up with this song: it's still in my chart so how can I possibly still rate it to this extent? I for one am not the sort of person who these days makes rash decisions on songs being the best of all time etc. without thinking long and hard about it (for what it's worth I'm not even going to bother thinking about where this sits with regards to the BOAT, except to say that this, "Waitress", "Take Me Out", "The Hardest Button To Button", "Roses", "Frontier Psychiatrist" and several others are essentially in that category). But then I would also point out that it would be wrong to discriminate against it for the very fact that it's so new. It's a song that has spent more time at #1 than any other song on my chart ever (and by a very considerable distance). Understandably it is easier to rack up weeks at #1 during summer - "I Hold Loneliness" and "Jamie, My Intentions Are Bass" can attest to that, but to be fair this was also the case for "Waitress". Of course I knew for a while before compiling this list that songs like "Waitress", "3WW" and "West Coast" would appear very very high, but I had made absolutely no guarantees on where any of these songs would land until I could put them closer together and compare just what I get out of them. I may have more thoughts on this song down the track so maybe I should do something a bit more focused in a review format, but the fact is that this song deserves to be #1. No song has captured my attention as much as this from last decade, starting with the utter perfection of the pounding beat as it links into the first verse. It's amazing to me that Joey's production has stepped up so much, but also it's important to note just how versatile Phoebe can be when singing against beats like this. The continuation of the syllable structure allows the song to seamlessly jump into the chorus without losing its stride, only for the bridge to then briefly interrupt that repetition. I have explained before that the final section is where the song goes to somehow another level. Released with just weeks to go in the decade, I'm almost certain that this is the newest song in the entire top 1000. I may have run out of things to say except to add ahhhhhhhhhhh this song makes me so happy.

Well that's it. It has been about six months of relistening, rating, ranking and comparing not to mention all of the collation of statistics and post writing. Also because I have nowhere else to put this, unofficial #1001 was "I Sat By The Ocean" by Queens Of The Stone Age. This may be the most effort I've ever put into compiling a list of songs and it just feels so complete to me now. It was such an influential decade and I'm so happy to have shared it with everyone. Thanks for all that have followed along, provided notes of their faves and listened in to the broadcast, it means so much. Even in these strange times I am looking forward to seeing what other people's lists end up looking like.

But I'm not done yet. Here's a Google Doc with a breakdown of various statistics including all entries sorted by artist, including credits:

Edit: thanks 392414 for finding that the 3 songs were Dry The River - Everlasting Light, M. Ward - Pirate Dial and M. Ward - Temptation!

thanks again

Pleasantly surprising #1 I like the cut of Two People's jib. Again, well done on compiling #1000 songs for any countdown, let alone a whole decade.
