Forum - Other Charts: Australia - Non ARIA - Top 40 Charts Question

Here's a challenge for any music archaeologists around here. Back in the 90's i remember another top 40 chart that i guess at the time was a competitor to take 40 australia. It was broadcast on the austereo network and was called the rock 40 countdown. I recently found an old recording of it i put onto cassette tape back in 1995 but for the life of me i cannot find any information about the show online. I'm guessing they used the Australian Music Report chart as the positions don't match the ARIA chart (this was a late june chart from what i can establish). If anyone has any info i would be very appreciative
Rock 40 Countdown was hosted by Mike Hammond.

It was a long time ago, but as far as I can remember, it used the AMR. Or at least, it did not use ARIA - my memory is that Take 40 and Rage were the only two countdown shows using ARIA, at least that I knew of.

I was a Take 40 guy, but I'd occasionally list to the Rock 40 Countdown.

All I have on tape from that show is Failing To Pieces by Faith No More @ 30 down from 29 (doesn't match ARIA - was never @ #29 or #30) and Tonight by NKOTB @ 36 down from 32 (doesn't match ARIA - was never @ 32) - so two things I can be reasonably sure about is that it didn't use the ARIA chart, and the show existed as early as Oct/Nov 1990.

Googling Mike Hammond returns some (but not a lot) of references to the show.

Hope that helps somewhat.
Thanks marco. I need to relisten to the tape i have of the rock 40 chart from 1995 to determine the date but i think it was around 23rd june. i had numbers 23-6. Only wish i had more.
Interestingly when pulling out my Take 40 stuff last night, I came across this in my "scratch" papers.

A weird thing to find, however based on the date, I bet I wrote it down in an attempt to have have weekly chart data for the two weeks that Take 40 did their year end specials. Who knows why I stopped writing down halfway through.

This further confirms Rock 40 didn't use the ARIA chart (which in retrospect would make it useless for filling in Take 40 gaps anyway). I don't have access to AMR data for that time period, but maybe someone that does can compare these positions to see if that's what the Rock 40 used. Dec 27, 1991 would be the date it was broadcast on Fox FM.

Yeah. that's for sure the one. colour me impressed savage. Finally have a date for that chart. I know i got some of the numbers wrong but i was going off a very vague memory
Interesting to see how much of the chart was available on each of the 3 formats in those 2 images. Tokyo Ghetto Pussy single-handedly keeping vinyl alive in 1995
Forgetting my manners. Thanks Savage. I've searched many many times for AMR charts and never found those so i bow to your superior googling skills
My memory was that the Rock 40 Countdown did not use either ARIA or AMR, but I seem to have been wrong, with it using the latter. It used to air on Friday nights in Victoria on Fox FM, I am pretty sure, in the early 90s (I first recall listening to it in 1991) while Take 40 Australia would air on Saturday nights.

I started listening to Take 40 Australia in 1988, and they used a different, non-AMR or ARIA, chart prior to January 1989. Again, I don't know what it was based on. Some Take 40 peaks from 1988 that differ to AMR and ARIA I recall are:

#1 Jason Donovan 'Nothing Can Divide Us'
#1 Daryl Braithwaite 'As the Days Go By'
#13 Yazz 'Stand Up For Your Love Rights'
#24 Bananarama 'I Can't Help It'
#24 Mel & Kim 'That's the Way It Is'
#27 Sabrina 'Sexy Girl'
#28 Bangles 'In Your Room'
#29 Bananarama 'Love, Truth & Honesty'
#35 Voice of the Beehive 'Don't Call Me Baby'

I don't remember the peak, but Robert Cray Band's 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' made the lower region of the top 40, in contrast to ARIA.

I also remember Nina Simone's 'My Baby Just Cares for Me' being at #40, which may have been its peak.

I am pretty sure that The Timelords' 'Doctorin' the Tardis' reached #1, too.

Take 40 switched to ARIA from the second show of 1989 (aired 14 January 1989 on Fox FM in Melbourne).

Braithwaite #1 on AMR? He never even got close on ARIA with that track. Despite it not being official i still find the AMR charts interesting, especially when comparing the positions with the ARIA charts of that week. Rock 40 had segments that i liked. 'The hands of time' where they'd play snippets of the top 5 from a past 80's year from that week in history (1980 is the one on my cassette, 16th june i think it is) 'banging on the door' which was a few tracks they thought likely to enter the chart the following week. Here in s.a rock 40 i recall being saturdays and take 40 on sundays
No, Jesse'77, 'As the Days Go By' was not an AMR #1 but a Take 40 Australia #1 in 1988, when they were using a chart that was different to both AMR and ARIA. I can't comment on earlier years of Take 40 Australia, as I did not tune in until around April 1988.
Oh my mistake nugs. sorry bout that
Another Take 40 peak not seen on ARIA was Especially For You @ #1.

Based on this having this on a tape after some songs recorded from the Top 40 performers of '88 (which typically was the week after Christmas),I assume this was the final episode where Take 40 used their own chart, so the first chart of 1989, given Nugs info that Take 40 started using ARIA from the 2nd week of 1989 (which is super helpful to know).

It's a long shot, but does anyone happen to have any Take 40 charts prior to 1989 (ie: non ARIA)?

A couple of years ago I was happy to get my hands on the ARIA charts for the period where I started listening to Take 40 (either Aug or Sep 1988), but after digging my old tapes out last year, I realized that Take 40 didn't use ARIA back then when songs I had on tape from 1988 didn't correspond with ARIA (or AMR).

I'd love to see old Take 40 charts for that period, if anyone wrote them down back then (I didn't start until 2 years later, in Aug 1990).

marko21, I do not recall 'Especially For You' going to #1 on Take 40. My recollection was that it debuted at #2, and that was its peak, but obviously I am wrong if you have a cassette recording of it. This would have been the last week that Take 40 used their own chart, which in Victoria was the show that aired on 7 January 1989 on Fox FM. The same week that 'Stand Up For Your Love Rights' debuted at #13 on the Take 40 chart.

I had a book where I wrote down the top 40 from Take 40 that week, but stupidly through it out in the late 90s. I have got a handful of other Take 40 charts written down in another chart/song lyrics book I kept, which I can dig out.

Is there any possibility of you getting some of those Take 40 cassette recordings digitised?
Nugs,

As far as dates go, wouldn't the first regular Take 40 countdown of 1989 (last using their own chart) have been Jan 14, 1989 (not Jan 7, 1989)?

Since (at least in later years - 1990 onwards for sure), they aired the "Christmas Show", then EOY Performers, then EOY Singles, I recently guessed the following (Fox FM broadcast dates):

Dec 25, 88 - '88 Christmas Show (regular countdown)
Dec 31, 88 - Top Performers of '88 - I recorded Mony, Mony (Billy Idol @ #37), Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (The Angels @ #33) and If I Could (1927 @ #32). James Reyne was @ #36 (they played Motors Too Fast)
Jan 7, 89 - Top Singles of '88
Jan 14, 89 - 1st countdown of '89 (regular countdown - last Take 40 compiled)
Jan 21, 89 - 2nd countdown of '89 (regular countdown - first ARIA compiled. ARIA WE Jan 15, 89 - 2nd ARIA chart of '89)

I'm assuming this all based on the (pure) assumption of when the 2 year end countdowns were broadcast, and that they did a EOY singles countdown in 1988 (I feel like I remember they did, but I didn't record anything from it - and it was over 30 years ago , so can I say for certain? Nope.).

Please let me know if you think/know differently on the dates.

In any case, I believe the recording itself to be from Jan 21, 1989 (2nd regular chart of the year, first ARIA used), where Barry announces Especially For You dropping to #2, after one week at #1 (hence assuming it debuted @ #1 on the final Take 40 compiled chart on Jan 14, 1989). I'll try post a clip of this for you soon. In theory I also recorded Rock n' Roll Music from that week - no idea on the position, other than Put A Little Love In Your Heart was at some higher position than it ("Next, Take 40 will take you back in time with Put A Little Love In Your Heart songwriter Jackie Deshannon...." - 30 years later I can still tell that was going into an ad break - so I wouldn't take it for granted it was necessarily the next song.)

I do plan to digitize the tapes. '88 is pretty sparse, thanks to a tape recorder I had from Jul - Dec '88 that ate tapes (only 3 of the 6 from that time survived past 1990), and at the time I was more geared towards just getting to song recorded without the DJ (regrettably, 30 years later). With that said, I do have a clip of a guest/fill in host talking about Poison after Nothin' But A Good Time. I'd love to see if someone could identify who it is - kinda sounds like Shirley Strachan to me, though I have no idea if it's plausible that he would have hosted an episode of Take 40.

I am sure I do have some "chunks" of Take 40 from the first half of 90s somewhere on cheap low quality cassettes that I'd use when I had to step away from the radio once I was writing it down each week. I'd tape over them as needed, but in theory still they'll have Take 40 content from the last time I used them.

It'll probably take a while to dig out and digitize, but I'll let you know.

marko21, I have dug out the earliest chart book I kept. I have taken some photos (my scanner doesn't seem to want to connect to my computer currently, and I need to find the installation CD...) of the Take 40 Australia charts from 1988 I have in it (all November-December), and uploaded them combined into one image here (you may need to save the image/enlarge it to make it readable, as it is big) - https://i.imgur.com/FTlbUdq.jpg

It seems you are correct about the first two weeks of 1989 still using Take 40 Australia's own separate chart. In the image is a top 40 for 21 January 1989, which matches ARIA's. Along the top I have written a list of #1 singles for 1989 so far, and 'Especially for You' is there.

I am 100% certain that a Take 40 Australia episode aired on Fox F.M. in Melbourne on 7 January 1989. I distinctly remember listening to this one, and had it written down in the book I have since thrown out. I am/was a Yazz fan at the time, and have noted '3 weeks' alongside 'Stand Up For Your Love Rights' on the 21 January 1989 Take 40 Australia chart, too (I remember it debuting at #13 on 7 January on Take 40).

Other interesting things to note - Phil Collins' 'A Groovy Kind of Love' and 1927's 'If I Could' being #1 singles, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince 'Parents Just Don't Understand' being a top 40 hit.

Since learning that Take 40 didn't initially use the ARIA chart, I've been curious what it did use. About 6 months ago, on reading that Ed Nimmervoll created the chart for Go-Set (before my time), I concluded that he *probably* compiled the chart for Take 40, in a similar way he had for Go Set.

I just came across an article that confirms my hunch...

https://www.mediaweek.com.au/mcm-boss-tony-mcginn-talks-authentic-entertainment-sale/

"When Take 40 started there was no ARIA Chart so McGinn bought the chart from the late great rock writer Ed Nimmervoll who used to ring around music stores getting details of what had been selling. When the ARIA Chart launched he had to break the news to Nimmervoll he would be moving on with a new chart supplier."

I've seen the question asked a couple of times on these forums, so I guess there's the answer on where Take 40 got their chart prior to 1989.

Interesting that Ed was compiling a national top 40 chart (per his Wikipedia page), 8 years before David Kent started!

Nugs: the photos of what you do have of Take 40 are awesome. I'll respond to that separately.
Nugs,

Wow, those are great, thanks for taking the time to take photos of what you do still have!

I'm quite intrigued by your memory of 1/7/89 being a regular chart with Yazz debuting @ 7.
If true, does that make my end of year specials date guesses wrong, or did Take 40 not do a EOY singles chart (that I thought was 1/7/89) back then?
Doesn't seem likely that'd do a EOY show for performers and not singles, but I only have recording evidence of a EOY performers show, so maybe? Maybe we'll never know.

With that said, I have Sweet Child Of Mine (@ #15; I Still Love You apparently @ #16) on tape, wedged between the songs from the Top 40 Performers of 1988 and Say You Will from the American Top 40 year end Top 100 - which I assume was broadcast 1/8/1988 (who knows, but sites list the show as 12/31/88, and typically AT40 would air on Fox 8 days later than the US show date, IIRC).

I had been assuming that Sweet Child @ #15 was 1/14/1988 (same week as Especially For You @ #1). If the AT40 recording really was 1/8/89 and you remember a regular Take 40 chart on 1/7/1988, maybe Sweet Child @ #15 is from 1/7/89 and not 1/14/89. I have the show outro also after it, which is the newer "guitar" background/theme music vs. the "sax and singers", so they must have updated that from the first show of 1989. (It's really weird to think I only heard the earlier show theme for at most 5 months - to this day I still think if it as the iconic theme, though it was actually only a very small portion of the many years I listened to Take 40).

My memory was that Parent's Just Don't Understand had cracked the Top 40, and I was kind of surprised recently seeing ARIA stated otherwise. Nice to see your book agrees with my memory of hearing on Take 40 (though, admittedly I seem to have taped it from MMM's Top 8 @ 8).

Definitely interesting to see what you have for Jan 21st - 4 re-entries in a single week - surely that had to be a Take 40 record! That alone really illustrates their chart normalizing to the ARIA chart that week!

I'm definitely going to drop your information from these photos into a database. Obviously I'll shoot you copies of the files if you want them. Even if only Nov / Dec, it's pretty cool to have some 1988 Take 40 data!
Hmmm, I should mention that I suggested earlier that Especially For You likely debuted at #1 on 1/14/1989. Leafing through my 1991 charts, I notice on the one where The Fly debuted @ #1, I have a note that it was the 4th #1 debut on Take 40.

1. We Are The World - USA For Africa (1985)
2. Good Times - Jimmy Barnes and INXS (1987)
3. Got To Be Certain - Kylie Minogue (1988)
4. The Fly - U2 (1991)

This implies Especially For You did not debut at #1 on Take 40, and while was #1 on 1/14/89, it had to have been in the chart prior to this.

This also lends more credence to your memory of a regular Take 40 chart on 1/7/1989. If it did not debut on 1/14/89 and 1/7/89 wasn't a regular countdown, it would have had to have debut on Take 40 in December, and if there were 2 end of year specials, it would have had to have been in the charts on Dec 17th. That seems unlikely given it's ARIA WE 1/8/89 debut, plus your Dec 17 chart doesn't show it.

It's a shame we don't have a 1/7/89 chart to definitively prove it without a doubt, but this makes me even more convinced on your memory of a 1/7/89 regular chart.

marko21, 'Stand Up For Your Love Rights' debuted at #13, not #7, on Take 40 Australia.

That's puzzling about the ARIA chart supposedly not existing when Take 40 commenced. I thought the show started in 1984? The printed top 50 charts, branded Countdown initially and based on the Kent Music Report, were available in record stores from July 1983. Even if he meant the ARIA-produced chart, that started in June 1988, so was available for 7 months before Take 40 Australia switched to it.

I could be wrong/I may have missed it, but I do not recall a biggest artists of the year Take 40 episode for 1988. The earliest one of those I remember was from 1992.

Also, I remember that Take 40 Australia used its own end of year chart for 1989 (I don't recall listening to the 1988 one), which was different to ARIA's.

Funny you should mention the MMM top 8 at 8, as I used to listen to that between late 1988 and late 1990. I have a couple of those written down - I spotted one from December 1988 in this chart book when taking the photos.

I am pretty sure you are right about 'Especially For You' reaching #1 on Take 40 Australia, though whether it debuted at #1 or not, I can't tell you. My memory was that it debuted at #2 on the 7/1/1989 episode of Take 40 Australia.

Take 40 ran a week behind the rage top 50, I cottoned on in early 1989, and then switched to using rage as my chart source (plus it had positions 41-50).

Last year, I got hold of a partial rage top 50 recording from 24/12/1988 (it starts at #44), which matches the printed top 50 chart dated for the two weeks ending 8/1/1989 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQoU5DHkfrE . The Kent Music Report dated their charts one week after the actual chart survey date - I don't know why - and ARIA kept that going with the printed top 50 charts (which were dated the week ending 13 days after the chart survey date) for the remainder of 1988 when they took over.

There was actually a 2 week Xmas break in the charts at the end of 1988 (19/12/1988 was the last chart survey of 1988, and 9/1/1989 was the first one of 1989), but only one week was added on the printed top 50 charts, due to the dating of them being a week behind, in keeping with AMR. 'Kokomo' was actually #1 for 8 weeks, not 7.

Nugs,

You're correct, Take 40 began in Feb 1984. I wrote to them at one point in '93 for some chart positions, and also asked that question - Feb '84 was the answer. IIRC they also mentioned the fact on their 10th Anniversary show in 1994.

Since that article was written some 3 decades later, I'm sure "there was no ARIA chart" actually means "they didn't know there was an ARIA chart".

On the Take 40 specials, I can say the following with certainty:

1988 - Take 40 performers aired (I have 2 songs taped)
1990 - 1994 - Top 40 performers aired (I listened & wrote down)
1995 - There is a gap here in my printouts.

I'm pretty sure there *was* one for 1995, and suspect it's not just printed out, but the floppy disk that has my files for the specials and early charts for 1996 (when I called it a day) is MIA. I'd need to find that to be able to be sure about the 1995 Performers chart. Well, I guess I'd need a floppy drive too!

I don't doubt there was one for 1989 too, I just don't have hard evidence (nothing taped, and it was before I was taped tracking the charts) of it.

On the singles specials, I can confirm the following:

1990 - Take 40 singles doesn't match ARIA
1991 - Take 40 singles doesn't match ARIA
1992 - Take 40 singles doesn't match ARIA
1993 - Take 40 singles does match ARIA
- I have a hand written rage top 60 of 1993, so I can't be 100% sure I didn't source my Take 40 information from this. But if not, T40 matched ARIA.
1994 - Take 40 singles does match ARIA
- I don't have the ARIA year end printed chart, nor evidence I sourced from rage. Assume T40 matched ARIA.
1995 - Top 40 singles does match ARIA
- I have the ARIA year end printed chart, so can't be 100% sure I didn't source T40 from this. But if not, T40 matched ARIA.

With that said, I would be surprised if I didn't listen to the year ends in 1993-1995, notice a difference and write them down; so I have to assume those years used ARIA's year end singles lists; unless someone knows otherwise.

Like you, I became savvy to rage airing the top 50 a week earlier at some point in 1992, and started jotting it down largely take the pressure off not missing anything when listening to Take 40 - which also did wonders for my tapes - gone were the days of missing the start of a song!

I've got a Take 40 Australia chart written down for 17 December 1988. I'm guessing that the artist and end of year chart episodes aired on 24 and 31 December 1988, though I do not know in which order, as I don't recall listening to either.

I rarely (possibly never) listened to a whole episode of Take 40 Australia once I started sourcing the chart from rage in early 1989, though would tune in occasionally to record a song/s from it onto cassette.

Here's the Take 40 Australia top 10 of 1992 uploaded to YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkxqyKxOHrg . Compare with https://www.aria.com.au/charts/1992/singles-chart

Someone who does not post here has kindly shared some of their Take 40 Australia charts, written down at the time. Here they are. Dates are as aired on Fox FM in Melbourne (Saturday night). I have bolded titles that missed the ARIA top 40, though am going from memory, so may have missed some:

24 Dec 1988 - Top 40 Artists Of 1988 (Artists only, not the played songs)
31 Dec 1988 - Top 40 Of 1988
14 Jan 1989 - last "non ARIA" chart
21 Jan 1989 - first ARIA chart
4 Feb 1989 - I wrote "National ARIA" so I assume Take 40 promoted ARIA that
week.

I also remember it being mentioned that 'Revolution Baby' had dropped to 45, the week it fell out, so presumably this chart was calculated beyond #40.
Wow, thanks Nugs and to whoever provided you with those Take 40 charts! It's especially cool to see and now have the full year end lists for 1988 in addition to completing all of December '88.

It also helps a lot to definitively date 90% of one side of surviving tapes.

Since thinking about all of this, I now remember I was on vacation in Queensland at the end of '88 - and I have some vague memory of being bummed at the end of the performers show that I wouldn't hear the top 40 of the year the following week. I really don't recall whether I found a station that carried Take 40 up there or not, but it probably explains why I have some songs recorded from the top 40 performers show, but nothing from the top 40 singles show. There's plenty on that list I would have wanted to record, particularly given my tape chew woes.

RE: '4 Feb 1989 - I wrote "National ARIA" so I assume Take 40 promoted ARIA that week.'

Interestingly, that's the same chart (Week Ending Jan 29, 1989) that the printed ARIA chart got a redesign which included promoting Take 40, so that's probably that's probably a fair assumption.

Also interesting also about Revolution Baby and that Take 40 would quote a position lower than 40. I have that song on a '88 playlist I created a few years back (which kinda kicked off this ARIA / Take 40 nostalgia), though it's the one Transvision Vamp song I don't really remember well from the time.

Again, these are great - if you happen to come across any more Take 40 from 1988, I'd love to see them.
Here's a clip of the guest / fill in host I mentioned some posts back.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XT7uBPCwHGivPpMrLKBMN4QrLtuCR2O8/view?usp=sharing

I have no idea what position Nothin' But A Good Time was at, nor exactly -when- this was. I assume it prior to the Sep 9th - it's at the end of a tape (you can hear it run out) and towards the beginning of the next tape I have John Peters going on about the Carlton v. Hawthorn "tomorrow" (thanks to the Aussie Rules Rap being in the top 8 @ 8), which I worked out to probably be the 2nd Semi Final (Sep 10th). So I assume this Take 40 clip is at some point before that.

Other than it vaguely sounding like Shirley Strachan to me, I have no idea who it actually is, and would be great if someone recognizes the voice.
Here are some other Take 40 Australia charts that differ from AMR/ARIA that I have received. My source says:

"The 24 Sep 1988 Take 40 show had a guest host, Wilbur Wilde. This might be the answer to the question about the mystery person who spoke after Poison's Nothin' But A Good Time."

This confirmed something I thought I recollected. That 3 songs climbed from 38 to 10 on the Take 40 chart (see 13-Jun, 4-Jul, 11-Jul). Each time being the "biggest climber of the week" or however they announced it.
I kind of remember the show mentioning the all-Aussie Top 4, which must have been the 8-Aug chart.
Not sure if it will be proven later, but I think I also recall La Isla Bonita moved into the Top 10 from #16 to #6, and Wishing Well did the same later in 1987.
I may still have a book with some old Take 40 charts written down at my parents place. If I can find I'll post it here down the track.
DaveNT, the 23 May 1987 chart is the earliest one my source has, so you won't get to confirm that about 'La Isla Bonita' (unless somebody else has the previous week's chart).

Re: the end of year chart, my source says:

"26 Dec is the Top 40 Of 1987 special. When compared the mid year Top 40 from 11 Jul 1987 there are a few unexpected placings.
If a song from the 11 Jul chart had fully completed its chart run by when that chart was compiled, I would expect it to basically finish lower (unless it was among the top few songs of the year) on the 26 Dec chart. But some songs finish much higher. How this works, I'm not sure. See You're The Voice (32 to 21), Lady In Red (37 to 30) and Funky Town (11 to 3)."

Nugs,

Take 40 would have some "interesting" anomalies. Moving my "specials" into a database a few weeks ago, I noticed the following...

In 1993, for Australia Music Day, they did the top Australian singles of the 1990's. Crying In The Chapel was #12.
In 1994, again for Australia Music Day, they did the same thing. You'd think the charts would have been pretty much the same, right? And they were, for the most part. However, Crying In The Chapel did not even make the 1994 one, which makes zero sense.

Better (TSJ) was #20 in 1993, but #19 in 1994. - A 1990 song getting a better (no pun intended) spot in 1994 makes no sense.
Don't Go Now was #21 in 1993, but #40 in 1994. - A 1991 song becoming less successful in 1994 again makes no sense. Certainly songs before 1994 should have dropped relatively also, but they didn't. Positions #21 - #23 all released well before 1993/1994 (I Need Your Body (1991), Marvelous (1992) & Heart In Danger (1991)) all gained a position, rather than remaining relative to Don't Go Now.

I know it all depends the method for calculation being the same in both year, and specials like this were probably more for entertainment than scientific accuracy, but the Crying In The Chapel and Don't Go Now examples are pretty extreme.
Further to that, they did mid year specials like the 1987 one in 1992 and 1995 - both years calling them "Stocktake Editions". I'd need to look back at them, but I do remember at the time seeing similar anomalies as what you've pointed out in the 1987 one.

At the time, the "Stocktake Editions" would kind of drive me nuts, because I was more interested in what was happening in the weekly charts. Like your source, I'd try to piece together the "missed" chart via last week positions (though, in later years I had rage and a trip to the record store to pick up the printed chart to fully put together the missed chart). In any case, it's interesting they were doing that as early as in 1987.

In my years of writing down Take 40, they typically did one special in addition to the year end ones, with the one anomaly being 1991, where they didn't do any additional ones. 1990, 1993 & 1994 were Australia Music Day, 1992 & 1995 were Stocktake Editions, and 1994 was the 10 Year Anniversary special. I'm interested to see whether your source know if they did any additional specials in 1988 & 1989. If they did one in 1989, I probably heard it, but I definitely have no memory.
From my source:

There were no Take 40 charts on 2 Jan & 9 Jan, at least on Fox FM.
16 Jan mentioned a few "last week" positions from an unplayed chart, included here in brackets.
23 Jan was a special chart, Top 40 Australian Artists. I'm not sure what the criteria was for this list, or why it had to appear this week, after only 1 regular chart. I see just 1 female solo artist, Marcia Hines, and I've just noticed that it does not include (for example) Olivia Newton John.
30 Jan had many "last week" positions from the unplayed regular chart, included here in brackets.

My source also writes, probably in reply to you marko:

The next special chart I'll get to typing up soon is the 1/2 year 1988 chart on 9 Jul. In 1989, Take 40 did not do a 1/2 year chart. The 1989 special charts were a Top 40 of 1989 on 23 Dec 1989 and a Top 40 Artists Of The 80's on 30 Dec 1989.

I'd guess that they did that Australian artists special in conjunction with Australia Day, based on the date.

Thanks also on the Wilbur Wilde fill in host info! I originally said I didn't know the position Poison were at (???) but he clearly says "hit 17" in that clip, which does match up with the Sep 24th chart. And now that you say it, I think I remember it being Wilbur. I don't know that I can really trust my memory, but I feel like he may have actually filled in for Barry for two consecutive episodes - I wonder whether your source can confirm or disprove that memory (Sep 17 or Oct 1).

It's interesting also that the first 2 weeks of 1988 Fox didn't air episodes. The other day I tried to verify episode numbers, and work out exactly when Take 40 began (more precisely than just Feb 1984). Based on the numbers and dates I have, I figured there had to be some weeks without an episode, however between Aug 1990 and 1996 I do not believe there was a single week without an episode; so it's helpful to have evidence of weeks without an episode.

Comments from my source - whose name is Scott, I hope he doesn't mind me revealing that:

On Take 40 guest hosts - in my stack of exercise books, where I have written the Take 40 charts from May 1987 to Apr 1991, I've only noted the one guest host, Wilbur Wilde on 24 Sep 1988. It's possible there were others. I also wrote charts on loose leaf paper, often noting the chart trivia mentioned on the shows. If I find the folders with those charts, I might be able to double check.

On the 23 Jan 1988 special - yes, it could be to do with Australia Day. Also, weren't there a lot of bicentennial celebrations going on around that time? In any case, it is a bad time to place a special chart, after a two week break and just one new regular chart. Looking at this chart closely, I'm now wondering where The Seekers are, surely they'd make a list like that?

Ahh, yes, the bi-centennial - I totally forgot about that! You're probably right, that gives even more context to that Australia artists special.

Definitely I remember around that time the big concerts (James Reyne, Icehouse - and others) that were broadcast on TV and simulcast on Fox (or EON?) and those being loosely connected with the bi-centennial (IIRC). The simulcasts were probably what originally had me venturing into FM land. I think these were maybe in Feb-ish. I still have a cassette with my botched recording of the James Reyne / Icehouse show (ahh, cheap cassettes ). There was a very upset 10 year old in Melbourne that night, on playing that tape back and finding all of side A pretty much inaudible. An event that also prompted my purchase of Man Of Colours.

Thinking back to that reminds me how I otherwise recorded "hits" at this point in time - I discovered Video Hits (or Top 40 Video, but I think it was VH and then Top 40 Video later in the year) in late 1987/early 1988 and would hold my tape recorder up to the TV speaker. Hence it being pretty exciting when I stumbled across American Top 40 (probably May or June) and soon after be clued in on Take 40 by a friend (probably July or August). I think it was somewhere between both that I started listening to EON's Top 8 @ 8 also. Recording songs from TV via mic-in and hoping no-one in the house made noise at the same time in early '88 was pretty ghetto...

Anyway, back to Take 40 - I agree on the timing of that Australian special. It was definitely better when they started doing their Australian specials inline with Australian Music Day starting in 1990 - which gave at least 4 weeks before the end of year specials.

These are the guest / fill-in hosts I know:

Aug 10, 1991 with Richard Pleasance
Aug 31, 1991 with John Kennedy
Sep 7, 1991 with John Kennedy
Sep 14, 1991 with Martika
Oct 12, 1991 with Roxus
Nov 30, 1991 with Dale Ryder
Dec 14, 1991 with Jenny Morris
Mar 14, 1992 with Craig McLachlan
Mar 21, 1992 with Billy Birmingham
Apr 25, 1992 with Rob Elliot
Jul 4, 1992 with Rob Elliot
Jun 25, 1994 with Richard Wilkins
Jul 2, 1994 with Richard Wilkins
Jun 17, 1995 with 'I Wanna Be A D.J' winner, Natale King
Jul 1, 1995 with Special Guest Host, Live From L.A, Shadoe Stevens
Jul 8, 1995 with Barry Bissell, Live From London

It's not on my typed up chart for that week, but listening to a tape last night, I noticed Jan 19, 1991 had a fill in host - I only have a short clip after 1 song, but my best guess is Ronnie Sparks. I guess I didn't start writing down when there were guests or fill in hosts until later in 1991.

Also from tape:
Sep 23, 1989 with Ronnie Sparks (Right Here Waiting @ #1 2nd week - so ARIA WE Sep 17, 1989 - I assume Take 40 broadcast Sep 23, 1989)
He signs off "see you next week", so I -suspect- he filled in the following week also, though I can't be sure.

I definitely remember there being in studio guests (rather than hosts per se), and unfortunately I didn't note down the difference at the time - all my papers just say "with xxx". But my memory of this is that was the case with Richard Pleasance, Roxus, Dale Ryder & Jenny Morris. Maybe Billy Birmingham too. Conversely, I feel like Martika really did guest host (ie: without Barry), but who knows if that memory is correct.

Obviously, the Fox DJ's (plus Wilkins and Stevens) were 100% fill-in hosts.

One other potential fill-in host I came across recently, via a Green Guide online:
Jul 9, 1988 - Phil Baildon

I don't know how accurate that is though - that was right before I started listening to Take 40, and I don't remember that name as a Fox DJ.

I'd forgotten until digging out my folders that Shadoe Stevens hosted an episode - though I now recall it being so weird hearing him say "Take 40 Australia" rather than "American Top 40". I may have a song or two recorded from this episode somewhere.

In anycase, since I'm slowly moving this all into a database [for safe keeping on discovering that -some- of this information I -only- have on paper] I've decided to try and preserve any host information also.

Thanks for keeping the charts coming - I'm looking forward to seeing the July-Sep ones to see if I can pinpoint where I started listening to Take 40.

Edit: I take back the part about Martika - she was actually an in studio guest (from what I can tell, intro'ing the top 10 - or at least #8) rather than hosting the entire episode.

If I haven't pointed out earlier, I have had to remove brackets from the start of song titles... like Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay, I've Had the Time of My Life and Glad I'm Not a Kennedy. For some reason, the forum won't accept these posts until the opening bracket from these titles is removed. Scott did not type them out this way.

Some notes from Scott:

The 11 Jun chart features a couple of huge climbers.
Pink Cadillac climbs from 40 to 4.
What A Wonderful World climbs from 19 to 1.

Comparison of how What A Wonderful World reached No 1 on ARIA Top 50 and Take 40 Australia. Very different paths.
ARIA: 47-32-9-4-2-2-2-1
Take 40: 33-32-17-19-1

Also on 18 Jun Fast Car moves from 39 to 9 and Blue Monday 1988 from 34 to 4.

Well, this is just fantastic - again, many thanks to you Nugs and Scott!

Interestingly, on the earliest surviving '88 cassettes, is The Perfect Day and a split second of I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That. Since there was no transition between the songs, I was confident it was from middle of the day radio, though I can now conclude I actually recorded it from Take 40 9/3. Despite having very little DJ context before and after the songs (I was clearly pretty brutal about only recording the song at this point, which changed over time), pretty much the rest of that side of the cassette is songs from that episode, which is cool to know.

One further question - I'd be interested to know what Take 40 broadcast date Scott has for the ARIA chart WE Dec 17, 1989 (Alice Cooper's Poison was #7 from #6). Here's what I recently pieced together for one of my late '89 tapes...

Poison (Alice Cooper) #3 -> #4 - ARIA WE Nov 19, 1989 => T40 Nov 25, 1989
Poison (Alice Cooper) #6 -> #7 - ARIA WE Dec 17, 1989 => T40 Dec 23, 1989
"300 Episodes and we still count" drop after song
Bed Of Nails (Alice Cooper) #14 => ARIA WE Jan 14, 1990 => T40 Jan 20, 1990
Janie's Got A Gun (Aerosmith) #1 => ARIA WE Feb 18, 1990 => T40 Feb 24, 1990

If Scott says Dec 23, 1989 was a special, then I am wrong on my Take 40 date for that second recording of Poison. Admittedly Poison also dropped #6->#7 on ARIA WE Oct 15, 1989, but given what I have on the tape before and after, I'm pretty confident that it's ARIA WE Dec 23. I assume the Take 40 date must then be Jan 6, 1990 - interested to see if Scott's records confirm that (I don't need the chart itself, just confirmation on the Take 40 broadcast date).

Per my notes above, that show was likely their 300th episode. I can't remember if they continued to play the "300 episodes and we still count" drop on shows after the 300th (they may have, but I don't remember, and only have it on tape once), but if not, this was their 300th episode.

As a side note, an interesting thing in those earlier Take 40 charts is the appearance of Rooty Toot Toot by Mellencamp. I'm pretty sure I've never heard (or heard of) the song before, and it never appeared on the ARIA chart (at least the Top 50 portion), which I guess goes to just how much these charts could vary.
marko21, 'Rooty Toot Toot' peaked at #54 on the ARIA singles chart.

Another outside the ARIA top 50 single I spotted (and remember hearing on Take 40 at the time) is Nina Simone's 'My Baby Just Cares for Me', which peaked at #51 on the ARIA chart.

A reply to your question from Scott:

Marko

Short answer - The ARIA Top 50 dated week ending 17 Dec 1989, where Poison was at 7, down from 6, matches the Take 40 episode from 6 Jan 1990.

Detailed answer - If we take the date of Take 40 as the Saturday that Fox FM played it (I know some other stations played it on Friday or Sunday), at the time of late '89 their charts would match the ARIA Top 50 charts dated week ending 6 days prior. The exception to this is the chart Take 40 played on 6 Jan 1990.

During the 1989 to 1990 Christmas & New Year period, Take 40 and ARIA had 2 weeks off from regular weekly charts. Take 40's break was 1 week before ARIAs. For their 23 Dec 1989 show, Take 40 could have played the last ARIA chart of 1989, dated week ending 17 Dec 1989. They did not, playing instead their Top 40 Of 1989 special. Take 40 kept the ARIA 17 Dec 1989 chart on ice, and didn't play it until their 6 Jan 1990 show. ARIA was still on their 2 week break on 6 Jan 1990. Take 40 didn't miss playing any weekly ARIA chart during the break, but they did play ARIA's 17 Dec 1989 charts 2 weeks later than their regular schedule.

By 13 Jan 1990, the schedule was back to Take 40 matching the ARIA chart dated week ending 6 days prior.
Here's the Take 40 Top 10 singles from the time period Poison was in the Top 10, and how they relate to the printed ARIA Top 50 charts. Also the Top 12 from Take 40's 20 Jan 1990 show, which matches the first published ARIA Report.

About Rooty Toot Toot. I clearly remember how much John Cougar Mellencamp was played on Melbourne radio in 1987 & 1988. I don't own The Lonesome Jubilee, just the singles from it, but I know that at least 7 tracks were played on the radio.
The Lonesome Jubilee singles - Paper In Fire, Cherry Bomb, Check It Out, Rooty Toot Toot.
The Lonesome Jubilee album tracks - The Real Life, Hard Times For An Honest Man (both charted US Rock), We Are The People.
And that's not all. Rave On from the Cocktail soundtrack (a commercial single overseas, but I think not here) and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus from A Very Special Christmas (at Christmas time, obviously) were all over radio as well.
Might be of interest to people that there are a couple of take 40 top tens (as much as could be recorded) that are online. One i think the chart date is 5/3/89 which is poor quality,i tried fixing it in audacity with no luck and one from 1990. If it doesn't go against the rules i'll link them below. These weren't uploaded by me, long before i ever started taping take 40.

I can concur on Especially For You, A Groovy Kind Of Love & As The Days Go By all being #1 on Take 40, I remember it well
Thanks for uploading those Jesse. I'm listening to the 1989 one. There are sooo many ads. I haven't listened to the radio for 20 years, really, and forgot how bad it was.
They could have put the whole top ten on one 45 minute side with possible room to spare if they'd cut out the ads.
Jesse,

Thanks for posting those links. I've Googled Take 40 a fair bit in the past couple of months, and neither of those had come up in my searches. Audio wise the only things I've come across is the Mar 1987 top 10, and top 10 from the 1992 end of year countdown both on YouTube (and a few very short Radio Antenna clips).

Interestingly that 1990 top 10 has the "bullet in his brain" version of Janie's Got A Gun. I actually remember them initially playing that (the album) version, and changing at some point to the radio friendly "underneath the train" version. Seems that it'd was the actually very next week, when it hit #1 (which is the week I recorded the song from Take 40, and it's the other version).

To briefly turn this back to the original subject of the Rock 40 Countdown (gasp! sorry for turning this into a Take 40 thread ), going through more of my papers I came across another Rock 40 Countdown (June 19, 1994) chart. Based on the computer font, it's not something I personally wrote down, I think it's from a school mate who also started writing down charts around that time. Not sure if it's useful to you since we worked out it used AMR, but let me know if you want me to post a photo of it.

Listened to the second (1990) Take 40 excerpt posted by Jesse. The date for this one would most likely have been 17 February 1990 (if it aired on a Saturday), not 21 January 1990 as listed.
No Need to feel bad Marko. The threads here tend to be pretty flexible so you guys can talk about take 40 or rock 40 and it don't bother me. By all means post your photo. I remember a rock 40 i had a snippet of from 1994 when cut'n'move were still at number 1 with give it up (might have been it's third week) and that's where they mentioned at the end of the show that it was compiled by the australian music report. The one i have in 1995 was hosted by david rymer(?) dunno how his name is spelt, so either hammond had left or was just on break.

An additional Take 40 special...

A few weeks ago I came across this file that is apparently Take 40's top 40 albums of 1996. It's with sitting in a folder with a bunch of ARIA charts from the guy at Monash University that would post them the USENET, and some other chart related files I downloaded in 1996 once I got on the web. I have no memory of it, so I've been trying to work out where I downloaded it from.

That is, until I worked out today that it's -my- file. I have zero memory of it, but Australian artists have a @ after them (which what I used to denote), and I just came across my hand written scratch notes of positions 40-35. I really thought I'd fallen off listening to Take 40 at some point earlier in 1996, but it would appear that I listened to this episode at very least.

File modification date is Jan 1, 1997 - so I'm guessing the broadcast was Dec 28, 1996 or earlier. It's surprising that it's albums - Take 40 would not typically do that as a special. This also makes me wonder whether the "other" end of year 1995 special (that I don't seem to have) was artists (as usual), or albums (as it was in 1996).

In any case, here in it's unmodified form. It never made it to my printed folders, so it's pretty rough (in some instances it lists the song that was played rather than the album name or artist - ie: lists "Santa Monica" rather than "Sparkle & Fade" or "Gyclerine" instead of Bush). For the artists specials I'd track the song they played, but looks like I didn't do it here (other than those two examples) - which is unfortunate.

The other thing to note here is this chart does NOT match ARIA. This fact, plus some other discoveries I just made, cast doubt on my previous assertion that Take 40's year end singles for 1993-1995 followed ARIA. More on that in separate post...

Edit: note that there are a lot of spelling mistakes in the above, Farnsey is an Aussie, and I have no idea why I typed "SWALLOWED" in #29. Obviously that was Double Allergic. Curious that I typed "Swallowed", because there isn't even a song titled that on the album.

So, on Take 40 end year singles not matching ARIA...

Earlier I made the assertion that Take 40 end of year singles countdowns from 1993 onwards match ARIA's - that's what my 1993-1995 "Take 40" print outs tell me.

After re-typing all the specials into a database, I noticed that my printout for 1992 singles also matches ARIA - which is -not- correct.

I would often (especially prior typing these directly into a computer - starting mid in 1993) do handwritten rough charts, before typing them up. Thankfully I still have most of these scraps of paper with handwritten info. Looking through these, I found both my handwritten list of rage's top 60 for 1992, and even more luckily, the Take 40 singles for 1992 (including a bunch of handwritten stats from that show).

So, it turns out what I used for my printed 1992 Take 40 chart, was actually the top 40 portion of the rage/ARIA chart. I have no idea if this was intentional. I don't know and don't remember if I even realized at the time that Take 40 year end specials differed to rage/ARIA. Whatever the case, for the past 30 years what I have had printed in my binder of Take 40 specials, for 1992 is ARIA, -not- Take 40. *sigh*.

This then raises some doubts about my printed "Take 40" year end singles charts for 1993-1995. They match ARIA, but is that just because I also onerously sourced them from rage/ARIA? I was able to find a handwritten rage chart for 1993 (proving only that I potentially could have sourced from this); no handwritten for Take 40. For 1994 I can't find anything handwritten for either rage or Take 40 - and without the original files, I can't really make an educated guess as to where I sourced those charts; hence I can't be sure either way whether Take 40 really did match ARIA that year.

I figure if Take 40 had switched to ARIA end of year singles charts from 1993 onward, they probably would have used ARIA's 1996 albums chart, and given I've just discovered they didn't, this further makes me question that I didn't just erroneously/naively use ARIA for 1993-1995.

After 1996 all this stuff sat in a closet, and then a box which I then didn't think about for 30 years; but it's weird to re-visit and consider I potentially screwed up those end of year charts in those final years.

I don't know if anyone here was tracking Take 40 this late (1993-1995), but I'd be interested if anyone can confirm whether or not Take 40 matched ARIA for year end singles from 1993-1995. And if they -didn't-, if someone has those 3 Take 40 charts.

And it's worth saying that until someone can confirm, my prior statement that Take 40 year end singles matched ARIA from 1993 onwards should be taken with some healthy skepticism.

Take 40 did a year end top 100 in i think it was 1999, and it didn't match ARIA's chart in the slightest. AMR would have been dead as a dodo by then so who knows how they compiled it.
Nugs,

FYI - I just got the 1987 charts into the database, and on getting queries going to generate LW, TI and HP stats, I noticed a mistake in the Dec 19, 1987 chart - Too Much Ain't Enough Love is listed twice, first @ #4 and second @ #13. I don 't know if I would have otherwise noticed it.

When viewing the next chart via the database, To Her Door being a R/E at #8 makes it obvious that's the missing song from the Dec 19, 1987 chart.

Not sure if this is just a typo when typing up the charts, or Scott wrote down Too Much Ain't Enough Love twice at the time, but I assume this is what the Dec 19, 1987 chart positions should actually be:

#4 Too Much Ain't Enough Love
#13 To Her Door

FYI if you or anyone else reading this have saved the charts Scott has provided.

Scott says re: the above:

Marko

Yep, that's an error with my typing up the Take 40 charts. I was using copy & paste from the previous week and clearly copied the wrong "too/to" song.

I can confirm from my original notes that on 19 Dec 1987 No. 13 is To Her Door and No. 4 is Too Much Ain't Enough Love
