If you are new to the thread, or not new, it might help to have a rundown. Every Sunday at midday, I record the current iTunes top 200 and the weekly Spotify chart, and sort together the highest songs on both of them (giving Spotify the edge on ties because it's honestly far more relevant). As that is usually less than 100 songs and this is 100 songs, I fill the rest of the slots with the oldest songs on the Spotify chart left over after that. The Bubbling Under chart lists the top 20 songs on the Spotify chart closest to joining the main list.
It's a new year for the chart but unlike last time, we're not representing a vague sea-change as it's just a return to what we've been used to for the past several months. Maneskin hold on at #1 by a wide margin. CKay climbs to #2 with "love nwantiti (ah ah ah)" though it'll be difficult to get much higher for a while. The big news of this week for whatever reason is Elton John. Perhaps choose to be cynical that someone's managed to type up a sync as this is the best chance he has of getting to #1 on the ARIA Chart in the near future. Anyway though the last 4 years has been an endless cashing in on his legacy, somehow this week is seeing the best performances ever for a lot of these songs. "Tiny Dancer", "Crocodile Rock", "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" and "Sacrifice" score new peaks. The other news is that Anastacia won The Masked Singer, which I'm going to pretend I know how that works. Via that she has her first ever appearances on the chart with "I'm Outta Love" and "Left Outside Alone", which are the only debuts on the entire chart this week. Elsewhere there are slight new peaks for Billie Eilish & SAINt JHN.
This week I'm introducing a change to the Bubbling Under chart which I decided on months ago but chose the new thread to be the time I bring it out. This is somewhat to save me some effort on specifics and also to make positions more meaningful. Evidently the past year and a half has shown that the oddity of songs appearing on the Spotify chart but that not being enough to make this main chart, to the point that there's almost always an example of it. Perhaps it will start to consume more and more of the chart, and if so we'd have a lot of songs ordered by their age that are at a point where it doesn't actually matter. What really matters is how close they are to the chart. So all of this is a long way to say that I'm taking the dates off of songs that are eligible via their age and now ordering them based on how high they are on the chart. Incidentally this doesn't change the chart at all this week but now you know. The biggest news of the week is the arrival of MCR's "Teenagers" which is having a little bit of a run on Spotify, or was, it might be dipping out quickly. Nonetheless, it got very close to the chart this week, leaping past Mac Miller. ScHoolboy Q also returns with "Collard Greens". Our stalwart old song "Ophelia" has dropped out again.

...And To Those I Love, Thanks For Sticking Around (14/02/2020)
It's yet another week at #1 for Maneskin, but really that's a misnomer because this is really Queen week. I don't really know why but I'm guessing something was on TV on Saturday night, and it's extremely overcompensating for the diminishing returns on Queen's last boost from 3 years ago, which has seen many of these songs absent from the chart for well over a year. Unsurprisingly it's difficult for Queen songs to hit new peaks but "Who Wants To Live Forever" has done just that. Getting a better result out of this though is Adam Lambert, who sees a big new peak for "Whataya Want From Me" at #2, and further debuts for "Ghost Town" and "If I Had You". This week is also pre-emptive Adele week whose return was already making major waves on Spotify before it even happened, so this is just an early start. "Hello" manages a slight new peak, as does "When We Were Young", which is actually her 2nd highest song on Spotify at the moment so expect a big jump next week. Shouse have been making big enough waves on iTunes to drag the original version up to a slight new peak this week. Elsewhere, a good week for James Arthur gives a debut for "Falling Like The Stars", while The Rolling Stones surprisingly get another debut this year with "Brown Sugar". "Lucid Dreams" has been on the chart every single week since I started counting Spotify but this week it drops off for the first time, having seen a downward trend for quite some time.
Unlike last week, the new rules actually do change the Bubbling Under chart as there's a new #1 from Adele. "Love In The Dark" was very close to debuting this week but will almost certainly get there next week. It brings us to 4 already eligible songs and Dua Lipa stuck at #5 2 weeks away from certainly debuting. "Adore You" drops out yet again.

...And To Those I Love, Thanks For Sticking Around (14/02/2020)
We might be nearing the end of Maneskin's reign but they still have a very healthy lead. In other news, Adele released a new single and on attempting to stream that, people instead also streamed all her other songs. Though the ARIA Chart would have you fooled, "When We Were Young" was the biggest beneficiary and climbs up to #3. Aside from regulars, we're now seeing first time entries for other "25" material. "Love In The Dark", "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" and "All I Ask" make their debuts. Also of note this week is a big new peak for Yazoo, while MKTO take their recent upswing to full force with "Classic" at #5, and there's also a new peak for John Farnham with "That's Freedom", and most notably, Maroon 5 are up to #96 with "Memories".
I've done it again and made a huge blunder. This time it was excluding Giveon's "Heartbreak Anniversary", which should have entered the Bubbling Under chart months ago. I've adjusted those months of charts on my spreadsheet so there'll be some odd stats going forward and some songs that are debuting again. Otherwise on this chart, Adele is promoted, Harry Styles falls out again and $uicideboy$ make a sharp exit. Taking their place we have yet another quite old song as indie band The Walters have the latest TikTok crossover with "I Love You So". They've just barely scraped onto the chart though so they might not last long, and incidentally, Giveon has quite a decline this week and will need a Spotify Wrapped or something to save him.

...And To Those I Love, Thanks For Sticking Around
Maneskin now have the equal second longest reigning #1 of all time at 17 weeks. The dates work out well for "Monster Mash" which makes the top 3 for the 3rd time. "Thriller" would be higher if not for being split between two versions so exactly that they were right next to each other on iTunes. There is a slight new peak for "This Is Halloween" though, and oddly enough, Rockwell has never charted until now. Otherwise there's a seemingly more timely airing of the 2nd "Mamma Mia" movie, with an overall better result than when it happened around this time last year. Dua Lipa gets promoted from the Bubbling Under release, as do The Walters. Gesaffelstein makes a mockery of the whole system purely by having "Lost In The Fire" disappear from the charts for 2 years just to return to make it into the chart ahead of so many other hits of its time.
On the Bubbling Under chart, "Collard Greens" and "Godzilla" are out again. As a result, we can return to somewhat regular programming from this thread before I mucked it up, because "Mood" and "WAP" are both back in the chart. We get to vault forward all the way to the end of September though, because joining the thread is Internet Money's "Lemonade" and Tiesto's "The Business".
Maneskin take their tied 2nd to outright 2nd for most weeks at #1, which may as well be #1 because Mariah Carey accumulating weeks at the top is so inevitable as to be unremarkable and oh here she is this week. Noteworthy this week is a particularly slow iTunes week in part because the chart was surprisingly loaded in new ABBA and new RUFUS DU SOL songs which pushed the bar far lower than it's been in recent weeks. It's good news for recent debut "Don't Start Now" which gets a big jump up the chart out of this convenience. Don McLean returns to a new peak for "American Pie", as do ABBA with "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!". Gesaffelstein continues to climb with "Lost In The Fire" and this slow week finally breaks Maroon 5 out of their late '90s rut. There's only one debut this week and it comes from Mis-Teeq's "Scandalous".
My Chemical Romance finish their dance on the Bubbling Under chart it seems, where Ed Sheeran's entire album has caused a minor ripple but nothing else has been knocked out. Mac Miller doesn't look to be lasting much longer either, and Giveon has taken significant drops which will require a Spotify Wrapped effect to salvage probably. In what can only be considered an indictment on glacial music promotion deals, getting pushed into the chart this week is the remix of "Levitating" (not that remix, the other one), which at the time of writing is still being promoted on the big Spotify playlists that have been promoting it since it was released 13 months ago, where no amount of DaBaby being cancelled could possibly get in the way of Warner and Spotify's back room deals.
Maneskin hold at the #1 spot. It's fair to say that their weeks are numbers, I just haven't figured out yet how much longer they'll last. CKay has declined for 4 weeks in a row so the competition won't come from him. It won't come from The Killers either who are just waiting for this whole thing to blow over and not be replaced by a new yet-to-blow over thing and perhaps finally take the #1 spot. No it'll like be Mariah Carey for the rest of the year once it's decided, as "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is actually higher than it was this time last year. Shouse have had some close weeks and especially some weeks in which I thought they got a new peak but realised I was missing a song, but now "Love Tonight" is finally at #6, lo and behold. It's obviously been a good news week for Britney liberation and seemingly in celebration, "Stronger" debuts in the top 10. It edges out a return from Sam Smith with "Writing's On The Wall", which of course is in the wake of "No Time To Die" finally coming out in theatres here, just 6 months too early to allow Billie Eilish to make an impact here where she'd be in the top 10, and Adele is just behind Sam at #12 with "Skyfall". I haven't seen "No Time To Die" yet so I can't make any comment on it, but I have seen every other Bond movie and what would I be if I didn't make an overly long comment about my opinions on the Bond franchise. Brace yourselves.
"Dr. No" is a quaint start to the series that has some cutemoments even if the stakes aren't quite there and the villain doesn't make much of a presence. "From Russia With Love" picks things up with some fun set pieces and henchmen although it does have an unnecessarily long mud wrestling sequence that seems to exist for fan service. The helicopter scene is very silly too. "Goldfinger" is where the series finally finds its footing in terms of motifs, but also has an entertaining rapport between Bond & the title villain with some iconic cinema moments. "Thunderball" is the Pokemon Gen 3 of Bond in that there is too much water, but it has a great opening scene. "Casino Royale" [1967] is just a strange look into '60s absurdist humour, which along with the numerous filming issues, comes together as so bad it's good. "You Only Live Twice" is very entertaining although it does have a really terrible premise of Sean Connery in yellowface which is so lightly applied I don't know if they should've bothered. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is actually a really engaging with some great sequences although George Lazenby is clearly the worst Bond and does none of the heavy lifting. "Diamonds Are Forever" is definitely Connery phoning it in but I love the silly action sequences while dril & his companion are great henchmen, and of course who could deny Shirley Bassey's classic theme. "Live and Let Die"'s idea to make all of the villains black is a weird move that doesn't age well, but I do think it's a strong cast of characters. "The Man With The Golden Gun" is practically saved by Christopher Lee who is too good for the movie although his demise is somewhat of a let down. "The Spy Who Loved Me" gets big points for introducing Jaws and it's a generally solid affair. "Moonraker" is the epitome of absurdly silly Roger Moore era films and I totally understand that people hate it but I had too much fun with it. "For Your Eyes Only" might be the most forgettable film in the franchise, I can never even remember what happens in it, and reading a plot summary sometimes makes me question if I ever did see it. "Never Say Never Again" is the "Thunderball" remake nobody asked for. "Octopussy" is more silly Moore and I think the title character doesn't really earn that designation but it has a fun climax. "A View To A Kill" is Christopher Walken rolling in the insanity and I'm all for it. "The Living Daylights" has a milkman who throws milk grenades, what more could you want? "Licence To Kill" has to be the most brutal Bond film in terms of the manner in which many characters are killed off. "GoldenEye" has great villains and action sequences but is also weirdly paced. "Tomorrow Never Dies" is fine but unremarkable. I kind of zoned out and stopped paying attention to "The World Is Not Enough" after Desmond Llewelyn exits the scene for his last portrayal of Q. "Die Another Day" is the modern "Moonraker" in that it's just so remarkably dumb but it's fun if you roll with it. "Casino Royale" [2006] has an amazing opener and stays pretty solid throughout. "Quantum of Solace" is unremarkable and there's not even anything bad that I can think of to complain about, it's just there. "Skyfall" is a really strong character-driven story that makes really good use of staple 'otherwise kind of just there' characters in M and Moneypenny. It might actually be my favourite Bond movie. "Spectre" is largely let down just because the ending is such sequel bait that you don't get a satisfying conclusion to the story arc until I assume "No Time To Die". Honestly the whole franchise is just dumb thrill rides and it's kind of charming that it's turned that into one of the longest running, most profitable film franchises of all time.
Another thing to note this week is that due to the excess of Taylor Swift songs on the iTunes chart, the iTunes chart is very bare in terms of entries this week which just means that the chart dips down to a number that is quite low down the chart for recent standards but still quite high compared to a year or even just 6 months ago. Gesaffelstein, The Walters & Maroon 5 benefit from this with new peaks. Bread get their 2nd ever entry, about a year after their first. Anthony Callea marks off another track in #1 hit bingo, and the only other debut is Taylor Swift's "Enchanted" which is just oddly rising of its own volition with no relation to the new "Red" release. Another significant moment on this week's chart is that with "Bohemian Rhapsody" dropping out, "Riptide" takes the title now for the longest charting song ever, and given its seemingly never ending residence on the Spotify chart, it's hard to see anything overtaking it since that would require it falling out of the chart at some point.
It's a gap week on the Bubbling Under chart as Ed Sheeran's entries drop off and aren't replaced yet until Taylor Swift & Silk Sonic wreak havoc. Benefitting from this are "Falling" and "Godzilla" which return to the chart, getting fairly close to their due dates. "Watermelon Sugar" and "Before You Go" will manage that next week and will certainly be charting high enough to get in. It's not a great week for "WAP" which takes a hefty decline in contrast with most songs here climbing a little bit up the chart, so it might be at risk of exiting soon.
Last week's chart veered heavily to Spotify, this week the pendulum has swung the other direction. The main reason being that now Taylor Swift is taking up real estate on the Spotify chart, and Adele hasn't got so many tracks to do the same on the iTunes chart this week. Actually she's brought her catalogue up in general. Doesn't stop Maneskin from being #1 though one might expect they've only got a week left in them at best. Soaring up is last week's debut from Bread which now sits at #2. Adele's biggest benefactor is "Hello", which seems much more popular on iTunes than Spotify, and hits a new peak of #4. She also hits a new high for "Water Under The Bridge", a brief 1 week charter that just barely snuck in years ago. Back on the Spotify front, it's a noteworthy week as we have not one but two notables hitting their 2nd birthday. First is "Watermelon Sugar" which has basically never left the top 100 since it's release including that period when it wasn't even being promoted as a promo single or a single single. It just refuses to drift away, and one would assume it's in for a new peak when things settle down, even if that takes a couple of months. The other is "Before You Go" which while a fair bit lower is also relatively stable, sometimes making slight ground on the bizarre possibility that it could one day overtake "Someone You Loved", which we can now watch unfold via this chart should it come to pass. There's also a new peak for FISHER and a debut for former bubbler Crazy Town.
With Taylor Swift occupying a significant portion of the chart this week, we were always going to have casualties. Namely The Spins, Falling, Godzilla & Heartbreak Anniversary. She'll be freeing up those spots over the coming weeks but most of them are just being replaced by Adele this week so there might not be much room to get back in for a while. In addition to the promotions, this means a lot of vacancies just opened up on this chart, as we jump over to almost less than a year ago in November 2020. This means an entry for the original WITHOUT YOU which is admittedly being knee-capped a little like all remix-ies do on this chart but I still foresee a long tenure to come. Less certain for its future we have Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill", a decade old unofficial track that finally got a proper release last year and ever since March of this year has been relentlessly promoted by Spotify Australia for reasons completely unknown. More than 8 months later it still has a slot on Hot Hits Australia though one must speculate that the moment that's gone, the song will probably vanish into the ether as a time capsule of 2021 charts (except ARIA of course). In other remix-ie news, The Weeknd is strangely back with "Save Your Tears" perhaps en route to overtake the remix, while Taylor Swift also gets a somewhat belated debut with "exile", which has returned to the top 200 for the first time in quite a while this week.
When I suggested that Maneskin's reign would be ending soon, I did not anticipate that it would come at the hands of Bread, whose "Everything I Own" is probably on an ad but I haven't watched any TV commercials from the past month so I couldn't confirm it. They just barely take the top spot but that's all it takes. The entire top 10 this week is actually from the iTunes chart. Notably on those grounds, we have a new peak for Joni Mitchell, while Norah Jones also gets her first top 10 from what I would have thought is a lesser known cut from "Come Away With Me". Shane Smith & the Saints makes a debut appearance in "All I See Is You". Due to this leading pack, most of last week's chart is slightly down and there's not much else in the way of new peaks, just Eva Cassidy returning to new heights with "Songbird", while The Pointer Sisters chart for the first time with "Jump (For My Love)".
Forgive me for not correctly updating the peaks column last week. This week we have our newest addition to the stakes of random 2010s indie rock track getting love on TikTok and by extension Spotify. This week's beneficiaries are The Rare Occasions, whose "Notion" takes the top spot for now. With the chart ready to swallow all attempts from newcomers, they might not have much of a chance to get through unless they have some strong long term popularity. They bump off "Blinding Lights" in its last week on the chart, while behind it is another return for Harry Styles' "Falling", which is getting mighty close to take off. "exile"'s return proves short lived, while it might also be close to curtains for "WAP" which just barely hangs on this week.
It's that time of the year where this chart becomes very boring for several months or at least it feels like that. We do however get a noteworthy arrival this week as yes, "Blinding Lights" is now 2 years old and it lands right in the top 10, likely gunning for a higher peak at the start of 2022. If you think it looks a bit unusual that Wham! are only just entering the chart this week, you'd be right! The main reason is that last week its two split versions on the iTunes chart were both just shy of the chart and combined it'd be a lot higher. Elsewhere this week, Adele's entries are in chaos as they're largely down on Spotify but iTunes offers chaos which means "Water Under The Bridge" gets a new peak as well as being her highest song this week. Britney Spears also gets a surprise early entry and new peak for "My Only Wish". For other debuts this week, it's a lucky week for the relatively recently eligible "Pump It Up" by Endor, while "Obsession" by The Cairos soundalike "Notion" by The Rare Occasions is able to break through before getting swamped out next week by Spotify Wrapped.
Despite Spotify Wrapped typically helping the biggest hits of the year gone by, Mac Miller's "The Spins" has managed to be caught up in that fervour, suggesting that maybe it's been bubbling under for a while this year. In any case, it's back to the top of the chart here. "Falling" also falls out for what is its last week of chart ineligibility, so otherwise we'll be waiting a few months before the next automatic promotion on this chart. Early beneficiaries of Spotify Wrapped are Ariana Grande & The Kid LAROI, whose songs *just* left the top 200 before their chance to chart, and now do so.
Usual business at the top etc etc. Brenda Lee is charting higher than usual as she's no longer split on Spotify, so she could get a new peak this year. This past week Michael Nesmith passed away. 2 years ago was when Peter Tork passed away and not to get too into dumb details of timing, but The Monkees have a better showing this time around on the chart, with "Daydream Believer" hitting the top 10 and "Last Train To Clarksville" actually charting this time. Michael Nesmith also gets a solo entry as well as Stone Poneys' cover of his song "Different Drum". The highest new entry this week comes from Todd Rundgren, who seems to be benefitting from Sex And The City to get in with "Hello It's Me". On the more youthful side we have Jaymes Young who's big on TikTok with "Infinity", same goes for Vundabar's "Alien Blues". The TikTok lottery also hits for Olly Murs who charts for the first time ever with "Dance With Me Tonight". Then we have the vague effect of Spotify Wrapped in which it's now been over 2 years since "Hot Pink" was released so "Streets" is in fact eligible for this chart, riding on the back of being a hit at the start of the year. We also now have two different types of gravy on the chart as there's a live version with Neil Finn.
Spotify Wrapped continues on the Bubbling Under chart, so Giveon is back in. A funnier beneficiary is Flume who similarly is only in the chart due to big streams at the start of the year but only got those streams because of the 2020 Hottest 100, so it's really thanks to the people who listened to it in 2020, still rippling through 21 months later.
So this week on the ARIA Chart, Wham! managed to overtake Michael Buble but they just narrowly don't manage it on this chart. There is some intrigue however this week as there are actual new peaks along the line. Namely Bobby Helms who seems to be having a particularly strong year on the chart, but also Jose Feliciano, Eartha Kitt & Ariana Grande (not that one). Also in Christmas news, Jonas Brothers have just this year become eligible with "Like It's Christmas" which makes it through this week after just missing out last week. Jaymes Young is getting pushed like it's a new hit single so he could go higher next year but he does manage a new peak this week as well as a new entry lower down, one which is only narrowly eligible. In other TikTok news we have the unlikely sounding hit of "Pope Is A Rockstar" giving SALES their first entry, and also Meghan Trainor getting the *inhales deeply* TITLE TRACK TO "TITLE", "TITLE", which has been viral there and also just got a video put on up YouTube this week.
There's a clear out of last week's top 3 on the Bubbling Under chart this week, so THE ANXIETY take their first week of a likely maximum 12 at the top of the chart. Expect a big clear out of this chart for the next 2 weeks and thus potentially the jarring sight of seeing Olivia Rodrigo on it already. Of those barely hanging on songs, "SO DONE" had a very harsh drop from last week's boost which dips it back behind "positions", allowing The Kid LAROI to occupy back to back slots as "WITHOUT YOU" returns to fill the gap.
Reminder that this is not the last week of this, next week's chart will look very similar too except that the iTunes only Christmas songs will vanish. Once again Bobby Helms & Jose Feliciano get new peaks. "Step Into Christmas" had a slow start this year but it vaults to an immediate new peak, as does Kylie's "Santa Baby" in a big way. Queen, Paul McCartney & Gwen Stefani also get new peaks. Bigly notable this week is the arrival of Wizzard who have somehow never charted before but have had a huge showing on streaming this year for their UK smash "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday". I don't believe it to be a Christmas song but Lindsay Buckingham arrives with "Holiday Road", which Wikipedia at least informs me is both a holiday song and a song about roads. In a twist, Jaymes Young gets a new peak with "Happiest Year" which overtakes "Infinity". This week is also the first time since becoming fully eligible that "Youngblood" has dropped out of the chart.
Chaos reigns in the Bubbling Under chart. Well, Chaos and snowmen, because via the classic loophole, Ella Fitzgerald wins this year's lottery of songs that have not made the main chart yet but did appear on the Spotify chart. Nonetheless we have songs flying off the chart that probably won't be back until 2 weeks from now. As such we enter the world of 2021, where it's possible we won't get a chance to see these songs again for a while. HVME win the unlucky award of being released on the same day as "Friday" but being the lower of the two.
Christmas etc. For the notable details with that, Brenda Lee is a new peak, Jose is a new peak, Queen is a new peak, Kylie Minogue is a new peak, Paul McCartney is a new peak etc. Jaymes Young has vaulted up very high on the iTunes chart and is a good shot at #1 next week if he can maintain it. I'm late and lazy and can't be bothered typing more.
People listen to Baby, It's Cold Outside in current year minus one.
The rises for Shouse, Tina Arena and The Motels' "Total Control" are likely the result of being featured on the ABC's New Year's Eve concert. The new entry for "Addicted To Love" is almost certainly the result of an ad campaign for a reality/trash TV show that I will refuse to name.
54-58 are all new peaks. It seems quite rare to have 5 in a row, especially that low on the chart. Last edited:
It is a mistake to say that the charts go back to normal after Christmas. In part because normal suggests movement that can be parsed correctly and also in part because New Year's also throws a spanner into the works. With Hottest 100 season approaching, I posit that the charts don't go back to normal until mid-late February. Anyway it was an interesting week where it looked for a while we might see history made as The Killers' perennial "Mr. Brightside" looked likely to finally top the chart. Unlucky for them, a vault to the top for Lulu just narrowly stopped them, while likely Maneskin will jump back ahead of them for a little longer. Maybe one day though. This time is also good for all recent debuts to finally get peaks befitting of their popularity. So "Blinding Lights" jumps up to #5, "Watermelon Sugar" to #10 and "Don't Start Now" is up to #11. SAINt JHN is a beneficiary of New Year's with "Roses" taking a big jump into the top 40. New Year's tends to stick to the same songs over and over again so there's not much room for new entries. In fact the one we do have from the Spotify chart had to be vacated from the chart on that day, but now Kid Cudi's "Pursuit Of Happiness" finally gets its place. Just above it is another Spotify hit although it's charting via iTunes at the moment, as Edison Lighthouse have struck TikTok gold with their oldie hit "Love Grows". Holder of terrible opinions, Van Morrison also debuts with one of his songs.
The Bubbling Under chart was arguably more arduous to put together than the main chart, and in fact with how close Kid Cudi cut it, I couldn't really complete it until I knew whether or not he'd be on it. He's not though so Mac Miller returns to #1, with a somewhat surprising return for Flume just behind as the next to become eligible track. The returns are largely what you'd expect although "Come & Go" hasn't quite managed to make it back yet, maybe next week. I also should report that I mucked up last week and didn't spot "Martin & Gina" still on the chart, so pretend it was there last week like I'm doing now.
With thanks to The Weeknd we are unable to have the sole 'normal week' of January next week where everything's calmed down and the Hottest 100 hasn't Hottest 100ed. Or maybe he's just easing us in as all the Spotify stuff tries to hit their equilibrium after the New Year's stuff goes away. It didn't especially affect the top end except for allowing Joni Mitchell a slightly higher new peak. We did end up with a close affair at the top though, and winning out is The Ronettes, who were on the chart not long ago with "Sleigh Ride". Now they're here under less pleasant circumstances as Ronnie Spector passed away this past week. Perhaps surprisingly, "Be My Baby" had never charted before but now it's straight in at #1 alongside a lower debut for "Baby I Love You". This is also unlucky for Bon Jovi who were so close to securing a first ever #1 peak for "Livin' On A Prayer", which incidentally has its sales split between two versions. It is a new peak though in its 165th week on the chart, previously getting as high as #4. Harry Styles also climbs slightly with "Watermelon Sugar" to #9. Jaymes Young has seemingly swapped the pecking order again and now it's all power towards "Infinity" up to #11. Lewis Capaldi also has a big jump to shave a few spots off the peak for "Before You Go", Edison Lighthouse and Kid Cudi gain from their debuts last week. There's an odd bunch of debuts also this week. First is Kate Rusby's "Who Will Sing Me Lullabies", which was used in After Life, alongside Aaron Espe's "Back To The Beginning" for the same reason. But we're not done there because 10cc also debut "The Things We Do For Love" from it, although this one at least previously made the Bubbling Under chart. I got to make myself feel old when I questioned whether Hilltop Hoods' "Leave Me Lonely" was eligible for this chart but indeed it was released in 2018 which makes it between 3 & 4 years old. The Neighbourhood have another viral hit with "Softcore" while I learnt a while ago that TikTok is into Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" so I want to attribute it to that. Oh and I have to shout out Mac Miller's "The Spins" which has finally promoted itself after and endless run down the bottom of the ladder.
Speaking of unusual TikTok occasions, we have a new Bubbling Under #1 thanks to Ruth B. sneaking into the chart this week. It's "Dandelions" which is actually from the same album as "Lost Boy" which you either remember well or never knew existed but either way both songs have done quite impressive numbers. Not that it's high enough anyway but Eminem sneaks back into the chart with "Godzilla" which was 1 day away from being fully eligible. DaBaby's "ROCKSTAR" drops out of the chart the same week Post Malone's "rockstar" re-entered the Spotify chart (not high enough to make it here), question everything.
Never mind "Leave Me Lonely", I'm shocked that "Youngblood" has been in the Catalogue chart for 138 weeks. Even taking into account that it didn't have to be 2 years old for a while there, those are remarkably consistent numbers.
"Dancing On My Own", "Perfect", "Someone You Loved", "Say You Won't Let Go", "Lucid Dreams" and possibly "Wagon Wheel" are the only ones I can see with similar numbers in such a small timeframe, and those first four are basically permanent fixtures.
The catalogue chart always seems more interesting than the main chart to me, so thanks for keeping the updates coming!
The common throughline often there is that good streaming numbers lets a song be stable on the chart and really rack up the weeks, compared to songs that I feel like I see on the iTunes chart week after week that just don't come close because they spend so much time off the chart as well.
That said, the fact that the bar for entry is getting higher and higher means that it's harder for songs to sustain these numbers, some of the above mentioned have actually gotten close to an equilibrium point below the top 100, maybe it'll happen this year?
Here's how Youngblood has progressed, where it feels like it's always stable but it has gradually paced its way down. https://i.imgur.com/cHW4AyV.png
For the second week in a row, this week's #1 is hoisted by sad news. On the weekend we learned of Meat Loaf's passing, and we get here what you'd probably expect even if the order probably isn't immediately obvious. Meat Loaf had previously only charted with two tracks, "Paradise By The Dashboard Light", and "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)". I'm not sure where the latter originally drew its sales from as a 10+ minute album cut that can't be purchased, but at the moment it's represented by a live version and also a version from a hits compilation. In any case, the #1 slot goes to "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth", which previously made the Bubbling Under chart. About a third of all of the iTunes entries this week are from Meat Loaf. So he has altered what would otherwise be a rather different week in which I suspect Tame Impala would take the top spot with "Elephant", for the same reason they originally charted with it last year, The Wiggles. If you were to take both of them out of the picture, then it'd be an uncertain battle between Bon Jovi and Frank Ocean, the latter of which gets a new top 10 peak this week. But either way, the Hottest 100 has the interesting side effect where the iTunes chart is stuffed with songs that by triple j's own rules when they adhere to them, cannot be eligible for this list, hence if not for Meat Loaf, we'd potentially struggle to get much over 25. Elsewhere this week, Paloma Faith nearly gets a new peak with her TikTok revived "Only Love Can Hurt Like This", while The Neighbourhood do in fact climb to a new peak off last week's debut. Same goes for Mac Miller lower down. Ruth B. gets into the chart a lot faster than him with "Dandelion", which takes advantage of the slow week as it would not chart on most other weeks from where it is. Also debuting this week is Wig Wam, whose 2010 song "Do Ya Wanna Taste It?" is the theme to new series Peacemaker.
Relatively slow Bubbling Under chart this week with Ruth B. getting promoted and Pop Smoke re-entering the chart. You might notice some changes in the numbers as more errors have been made and "WAP", and in fact "What You Know Bout Love" have been erroneously charting, the current chart reflects accurate information I hope this time.

I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) [Live]
After some assorted appearances over the years, Paloma Faith has finally gone all the way to #1 with "Only Love Can Hurt Like This". In doing so she prevents Meat Loaf from replacing himself at #1 as "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" holds the #2 spot. Making a big impression on the top 5 this week are things which mean I have to talk about Joe Rogan here. Neil Young & Joni Mitchell have taken their music off Spotify in protest and as a result "Heart of Gold" hits a big new peak at #3 and "Both Sides Now" is back up to #5, although that was already charting well lately so who knows, maybe it's a coincidence, and the reaction is really driving people do download "Big Yellow Taxi", which had never charted before in any version. Speaking of taxis, Taxiride's "Get Set" is being used in a tourism campaign for Melbourne and it gives the band their first ever entry. In new music, Charlie Puth has a new hit and now "One Call Away" hits a new peak, while Darren Hayes also released a new single and it's selling a little better than a lot of Savage Garden songs, of which "I Want You" is a debut. Wig Wam & The Walters climb to new peaks, and lastly we have a debut for Yung Lean, whose "Ginseng Strip 2002" has gone viral recently.
Once again we have a replacement at the #1 position. "Godzilla" drops back out and instead we have the slightly older "All For Us", as Euphoria has been very much a big deal lately. The song will very likely rise up to debut next week, but if there hypothetically were an elaborate bracket that had decided to cut things off this week, it would be tragically too late for Labrinth & Zendaya. Pop Smoke also drops out, where it's likely both of these dropouts are influenced by the Hottest 100 & invasion day festivities, so they may return next week.

It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll)
Initially it seemed like "Lost" was on a very brief rise that just happened to coincide with a very busy chart, meaning that it didn't really get its peak properly represented here. A week later this no longer appears to be the case as the track is back and stronger than ever, able to grab what feels like a relatively free week at the top. It's thus unlucky for Meat Loaf as "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" is #2 for a 3rd week in a row. It's also yet another week where the chart marks the passing of an artist. This time it's Glenn Wheatley of The Masters Apprentices, whose best known "Because I Love You" enters in the top 5. In addition to this, he also served as John Farnham's manager and he has 3 songs on the chart today, including only the 2nd ever appearance for "Burn For You". Speaking of second appearances, Van Morrison, Ruth B. & Sia return for new peaks, while Yung Lean storms up the chart with "Ginseng Strip 2002". We'll also accept a 3rd time appearance for Hinder, who now have a big new peak for "Lips Of An Angel", while Mac Miller & Kid Cudi's 4th weeks with "The Spins" and "Pursuit Of Happiness" result in a new peak as well. The relative veteran here in more ways than one is Norman Greenbaum who shaves off 10 places from the previous peak of "Spirit In The Sky" to #19. The Walters also continue their rise with "I Love You So". Otherwise this week it's big for Euphoria which means it's big for Labrinth who scores 2 debuts. JAY-Z also sneaks onto the chart with "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" for the first time, in response to it being on an ad at the moment.
The #1 circus on the Bubbling Under chart continues as we have another replacement. With Labrinth being promoted, in his place we have Chase Atlantic's "Swim", which will be hoping to do the same thing itself next week. As anticipated, Eminem & Pop Smoke return to the chart, while it seems "Love Again" has finally run its course out. Flume is still looking reasonably strong to make the first 2020s song into the chart. The rest of the field aren't really showing weakness as of yet.

It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll)
For once I have a very good reason for not posting this chart sooner. Well, 'good reason' is questionable. Anyway, I made another dumb mistake in not realising that Julia Michaels' song "What A Time" came out in 2019. That is something of a problem because this is a song that spent quite some time in the Spotify Chart in 2021. Almost the entirety of this should've translated over to this chart. So I spent much of Monday correcting this. You can see this newly translated information on this week's chart because the song is currently climbing back up. 30 weeks on the chart also means 30 weeks not on the chart for other songs. All of this data has been adjusted for this new chart so that will explain the discrepancies from last week. Several of these weeks were taken off "All Of Me", "Wonderwall" and "2002".
Anyway Sia gets to #1. The song is on a Samsung ad. It's one of those misleading weeks because "Lost" climbed a lot this week but drops down to #2. Charlie Puth vaults into the top 10 for the first time with "One Call Away", while Norman Greenbaum modestly jumps. Van Morrison climbs a fair bit closer, as do Labrinth & The Walters. Incidentally, Labrinth keeps adding more entries. Eric Clapton gets the real lion's share this week though. Given that there was an alt-right grift in the top 10 at the time I got this, it might not be for good reason. The Rare Occasions have the biggest jump of the week, and speaking of TikTok hits I have dramatic news that I wish I wrote down last week so I can gain less vague clout, because I definitely thought it was possible. Elley Duhe debuts with her song "MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT" which may or may not have been ghost written by Owl Eyes, and which you might recall was released right at the start of 2020, making it the first ever 2020s song to make this chart. Commiserations for Flume & THE ANXIETY who were mere weeks away from doing the same, or perhaps Eminem if his Super Bowl performance boosted "Godzilla" enough. Also debuting this week is Chase Atlantic's "Swim".
Which means that yet again the #1 spot is a revolving door on the Bubbling Under chart. Taking it is Labrinth's "Still Don't Know My Name", which actually did chart in Australia for a solid month in 2020, where it was just old enough to sneak into the Bubbling Under chart back then. A year and a half later it's old enough to enter at #1. It may be able to climb into the chart properly but it doesn't look strong enough yet.

I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) [Live]
Monday morning boosts are typically not very lucrative for this chart unless they hold up for a very long time. You could say that's somewhat the case this week although the drifting time has changed things up a little bit. Ever since the Super Bowl there's been a big impact on the chart that for quite a while looked like it would net the #1 spot for "Still D.R.E.", but somewhere along the line, "The Next Episode" overtook it giving Dr. Dre his first lead artist credited #1. "The Next Episode" was a fairly big hit on this chart in its first year though it had never made the top 10 before. "Still D.R.E." merely logged around the lower parts of the chart so it's a big new peak. They both narrowly hold up against Sia who was close to landing a second week at #1. Mary J. Blige as a result also scores her first ever lead artist entry with "Family Affair", previously appearing alongside George Michael on "As". Eminem is also a big beneficiary. "Without Me" has already been pacing up and keeps that momentum, but notably "The Real Slim Shady" scores a slight new peak in its 118th week, while "Godzilla" does indeed sneak into the main chart. Labrinth's entries continue to be chaotic but he scores some new peaks this week, as well as a debut for "When I R.I.P.". "Forever" actually enters the Spotify Chart this week but drops out on the iTunes chart, also the case for Elley Duhe although she was high enough to hold on. Wig Wam jump to another new peak alongside slight climbs for Ruth B., and Kid Cudi. Dire Straits return to the chart higher than ever with "Money For Nothing". Mike + The Mechanics are new to the chart although "The Living Years" made the Bubbling Under chart before. They're charting instead with "All I Need Is A Miracle". Not new to the chart is Juice Newton, who spent a decent while hanging around with "Angel Of The Morning", but now her other top 10 hit "Queen Of Hearts" enters the fold.
The traditional revolving door #1 is on hold this week, though Labrinth did climb a little bit closer to the main chart. Instead we swap out the #2 spot as Eminem completes his residency and is replaced by the curious windfall of Tame Impala's "Eventually", which just barely snuck into the Spotify Chart this week but doesn't look like it's going to be sticking around. Pop Smoke is also back out of the chart, possibly for good but you never really know.

You Took The Worlds Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)
Tides are favourable for Sia this week. Remains to be seen how long she rides this wave out but it's comfortably nestled in the iTunes top 10 at the moment. The top 10 is mostly usual suspects but I will shout out "Without Me" which has not been seen in the top 10 in over 5 years now. A lot of Euphoria tracks are slipping down but "Mount Everest" bucks the trend (possibly thanks to sneaking into the Spotify top 50) and gets a big jump to #12 this week. Elley Duhe continues to climb with "MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT" which with a Hot Hits Australia add today means it's certainly vaulting further up. Ruth B. & Kid Cudi continue their slight climbs, while Eminem has new peaks for returning "Stan" and last week's debut "Godzilla". It's not a new peak but I will note the return of Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" with lead singer and found Gary Brooker's passing this past week. Speaking of big '60s hits, Love Affair's cover of "Everlasting Love" debuts. Australia Decides was just on and Norway's KEiiNO performed "Spirit In The Sky" (not a cover) there, which finished 6th in Eurovision 2019. This week it debuts. What might also surprise you is that Madonna only has two entries ever on this chart, "Like A Prayer" and "Santa Baby". This week she adds a 3rd as I believe TikTok is quite fond of "Material Girl". Nelly Furtado has gotten a lot of success lately with "Promiscuous", and now it's joined by "Say It Right".
I've been waiting for this moment for months, but as you may know, "505" has always been a fan favourite from Arctic Monkeys 2nd album. In fact it's been occupying the US & UK Spotify charts for quite some time, but strangely Australia despite being a big Arctic Monkeys market has only just now gotten the memo (one imagines it's been hovering close but not quite to the chart prior). It heads up a big week of eligible but not high enough entries. Labrinth climbs a little higher again, Tame Impala miraculously hold on again, and in the middle, we have a first time Spotify entry for OutKast's "Ms. Jackson". It's actually spent over 3 weeks on the chart but usually never enough to actually make the final weekly chart. It's a re-entry because it previously spent 2 weeks on the chart years ago before I integrated Spotify. It also looks set to climb this week so it could potentially get onto the chart.
Slight decline this week for Sia though she's still reasonably comfortable at the top. "Lost" is starting to slip a little so maybe she'll have a bigger safety net next week. On the other hand, Elley Duhe is climbing fast as well and could pose a threat as "MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT" vaults into the top 10 with lots of room to grow. Coldplay have a bumper week which is headed off by "The Scientist" getting a new peak at #3. Vanessa Amorosi also does the same with "Absolutely Everybody". Labrinth climbs into the top 10 with "Mount Everest", which I believe to be egregiously missing from the ARIA Chart this week given that it got more streams than his song that did make the top 50 this week. Vanessa Amorosi is in the top 10 due to performing at Mardi Gras. This is also the case, minus the top 10 bit for Wafia, who makes her first ever appearance with "I'm Good" at #11. Furthermore, Darren Hayes performed many Savage Garden tracks of which "Affirmation" gets the best treatment landing in the top 10. Among various re-entries is a debut for "The Animal Song" and a new peak for "I Want You". "Nevermind" finally gets a 3rd entry onto the chart and no, it's not "Lithium", but it's "Something In The Way" which is being heard in The Batman. This was a busy week on the Spotify chart with a lot of songs climbing on there not emulating it over here and the threshold for making this chart higher than ever (outside of Christmas weeks). We do get a slight new peak for Labrinth's "When I R.I.P.", while XXXTENTACION makes a debut for "Revenge" which has picked up steam recently.
Minor correction to note: 4 weeks ago I omitted Josh Turner's "Your Man" from the chart. He didn't quite return this week but when he does, his stats will be updated, you may notice however Juice WRLD's "Lucid Dreams" has lost a week on its tally.
It's a fairly hectic week. We do not have a new #1 per say, rather Sheppard are just returning to the top spot in Birds of Tokyo fashion of 'They performed at an event'. This time around it was the Australian Flood Relief concert, which is all over this week's chart, and it's responsible for not only Sheppard's "Let Me Down Easy" returning, but also Gang Of Youths'. Jon Stevens performed and brought both the original "Take Me Back" and his acoustic version to new peaks. Missy Higgins has brought the original version of "Total Control" very high up the chart, while Vanessa Amorosi has a new peak in the top 10 for "Shine". Kate Miller-Heidke also has a new peak with "Caught In The Crowd", as does John Williamson (not with "Caught In The Crowd", but "True Blue"). Outside of this, Kilotile returns to a big new peak with "Cry To Me", also bringing back Solomon Burke and I'm not sure it ever registered to me that they're the same song. New movie The Adam Project brings Pete Townshend into the top 10 with "Let My Love Open The Door", which is his first ever entry, even The Who have never charted before. A new viral hit appears to be AnnenMayKantereit's cover of "Tom's Diner" from a couple years ago, which is also vaulting up the Spotify chart so it might stick around. Finally debuting this week is THE ANXIETY whose "Meet Me At Our Spot" is now old enough, though tragically it was removed from Hot Hits Australia a week ago and would otherwise be a lot higher. Similar pain for Flume who was high enough to enter the chart last week with "The Difference" but now it looks like the ship has sailed. The Spencer Davis Group get their first entry, as does local country singer Tom Curtain, who I assume is friends with George Cauldron. Nelly Furtado also gets a new peak with "Say It Right".
Something I didn't mention before is that this week's chart, with its big iTunes influx is the highest non-Christmas cut off we've ever had, and in fact it's higher than a lot of Christmas cut offs as well. This is particularly unlucky for Arctic Monkeys who had a great week with "505". They'll probably make it for real next week though. It's also a rough week for SZA & Internet Money who are hanging on by a thread, though shout out to "Lemonade" because I can't imagine many people expected it to still be charting 18 months later. The Weeknd is merely #5 this week but he will very safely enter the chart next week, while the remix of "Save Your Tears" could soon replace it on the Bubbling Under chart too.
It was a big week last week for the song "Cry To Me", but that's even more true this week, as Kilotile's version goes to #1. This is an easy sweep as it's very high on iTunes so it'll be interesting to see how it maintains. A big competitor is also the inexplicable cover of "Tom's Diner" which is vaulting up both charts and hits #3 this week. Nirvana take a big climb with a full week of intrigue around "Something In The Way" getting it to #4. Jaymes Young finally cracks the top 10 with "Infinity" and Vanessa Amorosi is in the top 10 for a 3rd week and swaps her entry again to do so. TikTok nets some new peaks for Ruth B. & Tom Odell, while Eminem seems to get lucky on a slow iTunes week to get "Godzilla" to a new peak. It's an almost all 2010s affair on the debuts, lead by Kevin Gates who finally gets his first entry ("Big Gangsta" came very close) with "Thinking With My Dick". No doubt courting a similar audience is Oh Wonder who also make their first appearance with "All We Do". The Weeknd has hit the big list as it's now been 2 years since "After Hours" came out and the original version of "Save Your Tears" is still very popular. Behind him we have Regard getting in with "Ride It", one of the longest running songs on the Bubbling Under chart to not get in before this. Lastly is Ed Sheeran's "Dive", which for those not keeping count is now the 6th song on "÷" to make this chart. "Galway Girl" came close to debuting about a year ago, and on an unrelated note, "Perfect Duet" was close this week.
It's a very busy week on the Bubbling Under chart. The Weeknd has ascended, while Labrinth, Flume, Internet Money & SZA have all dropped out. Arctic Monkeys have gotten even closer to charting so maybe next week will be their ticket. Filling in the blanks, I first have an amendment to make in that I left off Kanye West's "Bound 2" last week. Both this week and last week it has just barely scraped onto the chart so I don't expect it to stick. Also doing that this week is Timbaland's "The Way I Are", which last appeared on the Bubbling Under chart in 2018, but now returns with a new peak. So filling in those gaps, Riton re-enters for real this time, and also we have new arrivals from Joel Corry, Justin Bieber & Lil Nas X. "BED" is inexplicably still on Hot Hits Australia so the moment they pull the plug we'll probably never have to think about it again, and it's hard to imagine "Peaches" running the home stretch. "MONTERO" might be one to watch though it's had a rough few weeks lately. To note with our current cohort, it was a rough week for "Booster Seat" and "you broke me first", which both are now very close to slipping below the #100 cut off.
It's a much closer week but Kilotile manages to hold the top spot. They've considerably dropped on iTunes in the past 2 days though so it probably won't stay there. In doing so they keep Foo Fighters from hitting the top spot following the death of Taylor Hawkins. I remember seeing on Saturday night that "My Hero" was the highest song on iTunes but come Sunday afternoon, "Best Of You" overtook it, so both get new top 3 peaks. "Times Like These" also gets into the top 10 for the first time while "Everlong" in both versions gets new peaks. Most of these actually charted recently due to their tour here, and the only proper debut comes from "Wheels" at #28, just behind a new peak for "The Pretender". James Bay hits the top 10 with "Let It Go", which now matches the peak set by "Hold Back The River" at #9. Other singer-songwriters Tom Odell & XXXTENTACION also score slight new peaks. The actual highest debut this week comes from Pharrell Williams, who is doing big numbers with a song from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack that isn't "Happy". "Just A Cloud Away" adds to the pile of songs being represented here but ARIA haven't caught it yet. Speaking of TikTok hits, WILLOW had a run last year with "Wait A Minute!", but it's now shot back into prominence and re-enters with a new peak, ahead of "Meet Me At Our Spot" to score another hit, like father like daughter. Seemingly thanks to House of Gucci is the bingo lottery collaboration of Tracy Chapman & Pavarotti. Finally debuting is Arctic Monkeys' 2007 track "505", hey ARIA if you're reading this somehow, start tracking this one.
That new entry leaves a vacancy at the top of the Bubbling Under chart, which OutKast take for the first time with "Ms. Jackson". "Bound 2" also narrowly drops out to assure new peaks across the board. Spacey Jane have taken what I said last week to heart and vaulted up the Spotify chart this week. On the other hand, Timbaland just barely holds on the chart this week, and Joel Corry is not having a good week either. Entering for the first time we've got Olivia Rodrigo's 3rd single "deja vu", which is seemingly timely as her tracks have been climbing back up lately. I'm very skeptical it'll hold on for long enough to chart, unlike Doja Cat's "Kiss Me More" which is an immovable object, only behind "Heat Waves" & "Following The Sun" from this chart.

Correction corner: 2 weeks ago I left off Pete Townshead and "Let My Love Open the Door" which climbed to #6 from #9 and then narrowly fell out of the top 100 last week. 1 week ago I left out Oh Wonder who should have dropped to #86 and have fallen out this week. All numbers this week reflect those corrections.
I believe it was on Wednesday night that Shane Warne's state funeral aired on TV and it made a massive impact on the iTunes chart then. So much so that 4 days later when I compiled this, Noiseworks still lead the pack. "Take Me Back" was in the chart not long ago with a peak of #3 but now it hits the top spot. "No Lies" previously made the Bubbling Under chart but finally makes the proper chart. Also benefitting from the proceedings is "Angels" by Robbie Williams which picks up a big new peak. Also making big entries at that time were "Summer Of '69" which narrowly misses a new peak, and "Thinking Out Loud" which scores its best week in about a year. On the modern side of things, this prevents "Tom's Diner" from reaching the top spot though it'll be tough to miss next week, while Elley Duhe also gets a little higher though it has to be said has a low peak for a song that's spent 4 weeks in the Spotify top 20 now. J. Cole narrowly misses a new peak for "No Role Modelz" but also could get there next week with his current momentum. For Foo Fighters, "Everlong" has had by far the best showing on the Spotify chart which helps it hold up a fair bit better than most of their other entries, which will probably carry through next week. Gabrielle has a new peak for "Out Of Reach" which last charted about 2 years ago. In the world of oldies, Van Morrison has a debut with "Someone Like You", no it's not that song, and Frank Sinatra finally has a chart entry that isn't "Let It Snow!", as "My Way" breaks from its prior Bubbling Under shackles. Our last debut is a rare effect of the Academy Awards' Best Original Song award, which was won by "No Time To Die", which due to COVID-19 ended up coming out a long time before the movie of the same name, which apparently means it was still eligible to win the award when it was 2 years old.
In the world of blowing up on TikTok, enter "Cool For The Summer", which is doing big numbers around the world though Australia is a little lax on it comparatively, so it's not close to the main chart. Maroon 5 have also snuck back into the chart recently with "Payphone" which I assume has always just been hanging a little below it. It hasn't charted here in 4 years where under the old system it did reach the top of the Bubbling Under chart. In the world of movers and shakers, Timbaland & OutKast are still not in a safe place on here, while Joel Corry has had another very bad week, "Head & Heart" just collapsed halfway into the week and has set itself on that new equilibrium, so it's gonna be hit hard again this week, while "BED" is not looking safe at all. Spacey Jane continue to bounce around aimlessly but this week they dropped a lot, as did "Friday", "WITHOUT YOU" and "The Business" which all dropped below the top 100 threshold this week. Tate McRae is probably safe for landing in 2 weeks but maybe she's just coasting off her new single release as she's very low on today's chart.
It was a very close one but Kilotile managed to claw back to #1. Unless something comes along unexpectedly this week though it's "Tom's Diner"'s top spot for the taking. Elley Duhe is still very close but not quite there behind them though, which does finally result in a new peak of #3. Also in the world of new top 10 peaks, J. Cole has taken advantage of a slow week to get across the line with "No Role Modelz", which admittedly has been performing better lately but it's a fairly drastic jump all things considered. INXS is not a new peak. Neither is Ruth B. or XXXTENTACION, but Tom Odell & Eminem are. The Weeknd & Arctic Monkeys also take advantage of the situation to climb to new peaks when they otherwise wouldn't. The highest debut is Downstait's "Kingdom" thanks to its use in WrestleMania 2022, while the other general big news is Harry Styles' return vaulting his material back up. "Watermelon Sugar" doesn't get a new peak yet but "Adore You" and "Falling" finally make debuts. I also want to shout out at the bottom of the chart the return of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" which previously appeared on the 4th chart and this 335 week gap between appearances is certainly a new record. Less notable is the return of Drake's "One Dance" but I want to shout it out because it's been hanging out on the Spotify chart almost all year unable to be acknowledged on this chart until now.
On the Bubbling Under chart, there's a bit of shift around which sees Timbaland reach #1 for the first time. Demi Lovato has fallen out of the chart, which OutKast & Maroon 5 are also close to doing. Joining them is another Harry Styles entry in "Golden". In the world of ever shifting entries, "you broke me first" has a pretty bad week that puts it at risk of not debuting next week, while Spacey Jane collapse again, perhaps rebounding next week with a new single out. Also "Heat Waves" is no longer at #1 after 6 weeks of squatting but I think it'll still end up debuting in the long run. What does chart this week is "Leave The Door Open", no doubt thanks to the GRAMMYs and to a lesser extent Heardle.
Persistence pays off. After barely missing out for a few weeks, "Tom's Diner" has instead barely reached #1, sitting at the same spot on iTunes as Sia but getting priority as is the rule. Take notes The Killers. "As It Was" has been out for a decent while now but oddly enough only now does "Sign Of The Times" manage to return to the chart (notably wasn't in the Spotify returns) via iTunes, and quite high for a new peak of #8. He keeps WILLOW out of the top 10 who keeps getting new peaks with "Wait A Minute!" that I forget to mention. There's only one new peak on the whole chart actually this week and it's Rick Astley who seems to be benefitting from belated April tomfoolery with "Never Gonna Give You Up". It's also a very quiet week on the front that there's only one debut, coming from The Saints with Chris Bailey having passed away this past week. I believe a few days prior to this they'd have been high enough to reach #1 with both "Just Like Fire Would" and also "(I'm) Stranded" which sadly just missed the chart in the end. It's a quite high cut off this week which results in some sudden moves, notably The Walters plunging all the way out of the chart from #36 after months of consistency, which it looks like they won't return from. R.I.P. the TikTok indie bubble.
Under odd circumstances we have a new Bubbling Under #1 from Tate McRae. This would otherwise be the week that she'd be promoting herself to the main chart, but "you broke me first" just couldn't keep itself high enough to this point so it's instead now just the highest eligible song that hasn't charted. It's had some up and down weeks though so it may well still get there in the end. Other eligibles from OutKast & Harry Styles drop out which would normally be reason to shove every song up a little bit but instead we have something different. I didn't mention earlier the most notable chart story of the past week which is Jack Harlow's #1 debut, which normally wouldn't affect the chart in a noticeable way as it's above the #1 spot on both charts. However, you might have noticed when it came out that the Spotify chart was flooded by Jack Harlow songs which as a rule have managed to stick the landing somewhat except that they're all below this week's chart. That means he has 4 debuts this week, including the 2+ year old "WHATS POPPIN" and "I WANNA SEE SOME ASS", and the not far off "Tyler Herro" and "Already Best Friends". I expect they'll all vacate pretty quickly and maybe return if his album does well next week.
Harry really is all over the place this week - Sign of the Times returns to the top 10, Watermelon Sugar holds its' exact position while Adore You and Falling (and Golden) drop out entirely.
It's that funny time of the year where chaos erupts multiple times a week on the iTunes chart because The Voice is on. As per usual, these airings are not particularly well timed for this chart but sometimes they're able to maintain it for long enough, and that's just what happened for Kaylee Bell. You may be aware of her for her music over the past few years (I rate "Be With You"), but the first song I ever heard from her is "Keith", a song absolutely loaded to the brim with references and reverence for Keith Urban, who just so happens to be a judge on The Voice, and she just happens to be a contestant. She had everyone turn around for it but Jessica Mauboy stopped Keith from getting her. The Voice contributes to a decent few songs this week, including debuts for "If The World Was Ending" and "This Town", as well as the big re-entry for "Falling" by Harry Styles, although that was going to re-enter otherwise since Harry stock is high again. Unrelated to this is James Bay vaulting to a new peak of #2 with "Let It Go", while Loren Allred's "Never Enough" also hits the top 10, though in that case "This Is Me" was performed on The Voice so maybe that counts. Elley Duhe is quite unlucky as she's now overtaken "Tom's Diner" but isn't high enough to get to the top spot, which The Voice might make difficult work of in the next few weeks. Proving that "Falling" wasn't a fluke, "Adore You" also returns with a big new peak, and "Watermelon Sugar" creeps up to an ever-so-slight new peak of #8. The only other new peak comes from Tom Odell's "Another Love". Elsewhere in debuts that can be described as at least slightly random inclusions for the artists, with Backstreet Boys debuting "Larger Than Life", and Run-D.M.C. getting "It's Tricky" in, their first non-Christmas entry.
The Bubbling Under chart is effectively just reverting back last week's chaos with all of Jack Harlow's entries dropping out. Harry Styles jumps back in with a new peak for "Golden" but otherwise everything is just sliding back up to fill in the gaps. It's a bad week for The Kid LAROI, Riton & Polo G who all drop below the charting threshold this week. Joel Corry also has another bad week with "BED" reaching its lowest position yet of #179.
^Loren Allred's re-entry is due to her being a contestant on the latest season of Britain's Got Talent, which I assume first aired this past week in Australia.
Also worth noting that This Town is right next to This City.
It's not The Voice but when Ronan strikes I always assume it's something on TV. This is the first time that he's gotten to #1 though, narrowly beating Elley Duhe who also gets a new peak of #2. What The Voice is responsible for is "Never Let Me Go" being a first time top 10 entry for Florence + The Machine. WILLOW also reaches the top 10 with "Wait A Minute!" and Harry Styles has a slight new peak for "Watermelon Sugar". His main action is with his other tracks though, as "Adore You" also jumps up and "Golden" vaults considerably to debut. Even "Kiwi" was somewhat close to the chart. The biggest impact this week though seems to be the SBS special on the 1980s which has vaulted a lot of absolute bangers that somehow never charted before, including Eurythmics, Visage, Ultravox & Robert Palmer. 10cc aren't '80s but they do get a new peak for "I'm Not In Love". In assorted others, we have Tate McRae also jumping back up with "you broke me first" to get onto the main chart for the first time, an improbably entry for Robbie Williams and thanks to inclusion on the Netflix series Ozark, Nas's excellent "N.Y. State Of Mind".
The notable happenings this week are the aforementioned promotions of Harry Styles & Tate McRae. Timbaland & Maroon 5 are also moving up but still quite a way away. One to watch if it takes off is Cat Burns' "Go", the original version quite close to being 2 years old already and that's the one that's charting here. Tiësto has had some bad weeks with "The Business" lately so he'll probably struggle to hold on another 4 months, otherwise it's a relatively calm week.
It's an annual tradition. I have no idea what exactly spurs it on or if it's just a case of 'well there's no more likely time of the year to buy it' but when Mother's Day rolls around, people without fail flock to "Mom" by Meghan Trainor. It has charted 5 years in a row and 4 times now it's landed at #1. It was quite close this time around though, with WILLOW vaulting up on streaming to take "Wait A Minute!" to #2 this week, while Kaylee Bell is seeing surprisingly strong longevity with "Keith", gonna look weird if she doesn't finish strongly on The Voice. Speaking of The Voice, the annual tradition of performing "Bruises" is back and bigger than ever, well not really because last year it gifted the song an additional 2 months on this chart through streaming, whereas this time it dropped out after 2 days. We'll see if it can last the distance on iTunes to finally hit 100 weeks though, but also it's not the main story because they did a whole plethora of Capaldi this week. "Before You Go" faired the best and gets a big new peak in the top 5, "Someone You Loved" would probably be up there too if it weren't split between so many versions. Also courtesy of The Voice, Luke Combs gets yet another entry. It seems that his 2nd album songs don't pop up anywhere near as often as his 1st, but after 6 months of eligibility, "Even Though I'm Leaving" gets in. The Voice also brings "July" to a new peak. Alongside regular Mother's Day entries, Anne-Marie has a new one in (I assume it's not dedicated to Scarlett Johansson) that just became eligible this year. I'm not certain why Everlast is making his first solo appearance here, but Panic! At The Disco have caught the TikTok wave with a 2016 track.
On the Bubbling Under chart, it's relatively calm. Cat Burns drops back out and doesn't seem to have the momentum to get back in. It has been a very bad week for Joel Corry because Hot Hits Australia in the space of a week removed both of his songs, which seems to have hurt "Head & Heart" by association. In any case, this should be "BED"'s last week on here. Riton, Tiesto & Spacey Jane also had bad weeks and probably don't have optimistic futures given how many albums are hitting the chart soon. This is also probably bad news for Polo G, whose "Martin & Gina" becomes eligible next week, being high enough to chart this week but possibly not next week. He does have "RAPSTAR" debuting but that's currently even lower so he probably needs a new big hit to spur interest back in them.
Also since it's on my mind right now, I just noticed I'd been leaving out "Ghost" from the bubbling under chart which was of course released on the same day as "Peaches" so it would be just above it every week. This'll be fixed on the next chart but it means "RAPSTAR" has not yet entered debuted and "Kiss Me More" only just did this week.
It's largely because of Eurovision but it's a slow week at the top of the iTunes chart which allows the Spotify cohort to rise up higher than usual. It's weird to think that narrowly top 20 is a 'weak' #1 when a couple of years ago, narrowly top 40 was a near guaranteed #1. Nonetheless, WILLOW gets to the top with "Wait A Minute!". Furthermore, J. Cole sneaks into the top 5 with "No Role Modelz", which is interestingly competiting quite closely with "Mr. Brightside" as the highest perpetual charter. Much like the Hottest 100, Eurovision can't really make a clear visible impact on this chart because it largely impacts music that's too new for this chart. All we really have is a re-entry from "Beggin'" since Maneskin did perform on the night. It would be fun to imagine that B*Witched represented Ireland but actually it's thanks to Netflix's "Senior Year" that "C'est La Vie" returns to the chart, a former #100 peaker is now a #11 peaker, yay? Ruth B., Panic! At The Disco, Arctic Monkeys and even Drake notch up new peaks. Jennifer Rush enters with "The Power Of Love", which means that we've now had 5 versions of the 3 songs by that name chart. Hopefully a Huey Lewis cover comes along to give us a double clean sweep. For our other assorted debuts, we have Polo G reaching the 2 year mark for "Martin & Gina", while A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie gets his second ever entry thanks to a big streaming boon for "Drowning". We've also got All Saints picking up a second entry with "Pure Shores".
Busy release weeks have been sweeping the chart clear, which looks to continue in the coming weeks but for now we've already got quite a clear out. There are new peaks effectively across the board, including "Bound 2" which has returned to the chart after some near misses recently. Polo G debuts for real this time with "RAPSTAR", and is joined by the surprisingly long lasting "2055", and less surprising "Save Your Tears" V2 + "good 4 u". "Peaches" & "Head & Heart" have also taken pretty hefty declines this week.
This week's Netflix series I've just heard about is "A Perfect Pairing". If that has any significance to you, I'm happy for you, it's relevant this week because it has pushed Edward Shape & The Magnetic Zeros to #1 for the first time. Otherwise there's not too much to note in the top 10. Harry Styles is not a new peak this week but maybe he can do better next time. Luke Combs narrowly misses the top 10 with "When It Rains It Pours". The biggest new arrivals this week come back to back from Vangelis who passed away this week. Lower down are debuts for Suki Waterhouse's new streaming hit, and bizarrely, "Comedown" by Bush which is their first ever entry. Let's just say Dubya was in the news this last week otherwise I don't know a good reason why this is here. Taylor Swift also arrives with an I BELIEVE MISSING FROM THE ARIA CHART WINK WINK "Don't Blame Me" from "reputation". There's just one new peak this week and it's for A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie who manages to fight the tide on Spotify to climb a little with "Drowning", good luck doing it again next week. It's also worth noting that J. Cole's "Wet Dreamz" is back via the Spotify chart after a long time on the chart but not quite high enough, while having already charted so it couldn't be acknowledged on Bubbling Under (a la Drake). There's also a very rare appearance for "In My Life" by The Beatles which last appeared 6 years ago almost to the week.
Kanye West has been seeing favourable trends lately ("Ni**as In Paris" has had some of the best gains this past week though it's not obvious from looking at this chart), and subsequently, "Bound 2" leaps over its competition to get to #1 for the first time on the Bubbling Under chart. It's still quite far away from the main chart. In general there was a big clear out this week though the only relevant casualty is "RAPSTAR". It's replaced by "traitor" meaning that Olivia Rodrigo now has 4 songs in the bottom half of the chart. Having a rough time this week is mostly everything, but "Peaches" could be out of the chart next week if it repeats this situation.
